Best Hex Ever by Nadia El-Fassi - 5/5⭐️ I absolutely loved this book! I'm a big fan of magical realism romances and this one hit the nail on the head for me. It was cozy, it had depth and great character development, and the spice was hella spicy! I'll definitely be reading the second book to this series when it comes out.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson - 2.5/5⭐️ This book was okay, and I was a little let down, since it's such a popular horror book. But, realistically, not all classics live up to modern day standards of story-telling. I found the dialogue between the characters having too much tongue in cheek humor for what was supposed to be a scary, eerie story. I'm glad I read it though because I can see how this story sets up the modern-day haunted house story and the way vulnerable characters are prone to be effected to hauntings more.
The Pumpkin Spice Cafe by Laurie Gilmore- 3/5⭐️ I didn't know what to expect with this one since it's been so viral and maybe I over-estimated the book because of that and should have known better lol. Even with that being said, it was still a super cute, cozy fall romance that has a good level of spice. If you want an easy, entertaining and no-frills seasonal romance, I'd recommend this one.
Man Made Monsters by Andrea L. Rogers - 3.5/5⭐️ This was a really neat book. If I had to summarize it, I would say it's, "Young Adult Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark with Native American Characters and Themes", which is pretty cool! There was a bunch of short stories and each one had some pretty cool illustrations. I loved that all the stories had characters that were related spanning from the late 1800's to modern times and onward. The inclusion of the family tree was pretty awesome, as well. Very neat and unique read!
The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden - 5/5⭐️ Damn! This was probably one of the my favorite McFadden books so far. I really didn't see the plot twist at the end of this book coming. This was a quick, easy and entertaining read that I'd recommend to any fan of psychological thrillers. I enjoyed the variety of crazy people in this book - they all had their own motives and intents behind their actions for doing wrong and it makes you think a bit about the reasons people turn to murder.
The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw - 2.5/5⭐️ This was such a strange book! I read it for a book club and I think a more realistic, horror style storytelling of The Little Mermaid is super cool. However, it seemed to me that the author used the most complex, and uncommon words to her writing that made it utterly pretentious and difficult to read. The ending was good but I felt the timeline of the story telling was very off and some of the story came after the acknowledgements page which was bizarre to me.
Murder Your Employer: McMaster’s Guide to Homicide - 3/5⭐️ I really didn't know what to expect of this book but it was very unique and highly detailed, as well as filled with dark humor. I enjoyed the story and the premise of a school to teach people how to "delete" people the world would be better off without. However, it just wasn't my cup of tea. It was very quirky which I loved but it just wasn't for me.
The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst - 3.5/5⭐️This book is the definition of "cottagecore". It was really cute and cozy, however, it was definitely slow for the first half of the book. The second half was a lot more fast-paced, and I loved the ending. I just wish the pace was more evenly spaced out. Still very much an enjoyable, feel-good book.
A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair - 3/5⭐️ I loved a more magical realism take on Greek mythology and the gods being like celebrities within the world of mortals. This was a story about Persephone and Hades relationship. The spice was super good, like very good! The story wasn't anything groundbreaking good but I love an easier fantasy read without it coming with the need of as much lore to the world they live in.

Smiffina Episodes: Trail Of Blood
Smithy is now Acting Inspector whilst Gina is on holiday. It's a hell of a day for him to start:
Supermodel Cindy Statham's Funeral,
The OTT press interest,
Her suspected murderer attempting suicide,
Her suspected murderer doing a runner within the hospital,
Her suspected murderer assaulting Beth, knocking her out and tying her up,
Her suspected murderer escaping the hospital via an ambulance and then going on to escape the ambulance and disappear somewhere in Canley,
A stroppy journalist 'The Aptly Named Mr Cocks' insisting that Beth (4ft nothing Beth of all people!) pushed him over and then leaking to the public that Larry had escaped.
And just a little thing of an armed robbery coming up in the middle of all that.
"Why today?!" Smithy stresses, given he doesn't have enough coffee for all of this, never mind enough officers!
Thankfully Beth is ok and she attends the armed robbery. The suspects have already disappeared and there's no sign of their getaway vehicle. Sally speaks to a man who is more than a little excited at helping the police and appears to be a bit of a True Crime buff. He gives them proper descriptions of the clothing down to the colour laces in ones shoes and he also has a recording on his phone.

Cindy's suspected murderer, Larry Franks escapes into the back of an ambulance. They send the paramedics a silent text via their terminal to tell them to continue to their destination and that they'll have police there to assist them. Dan and others arrive to box the ambulance in but Larry must have jumped out enroute.

Bit of a stressful start to the cover...
Jo goes to visit Larry's chatty cell mate, Merv. He's a little too helpful, even telling her that Larry had discussed his crime and that he'd watched Cindy die and that he'd kick off and get vicious if anyone mentioned Cindy. He says 'unfinished business' caused Larry to escape. He claims he'll probably be at the address of someone who was 'like a sister to him'. Unfortunately all that happens is Stuart finds Merv's wife and her new boyfriend getting 'busy' when he goes to check. Merv apologises and says he suspected them of having an affair even before he was inside and wanted to check. Jo makes to leave and he then tells her that Larry wasn't as bad as he'd initially made out and that he couldn't take people thinking that he'd killed Cindy, especially as they were calling him 'Necro' inside. He insisted he'd never ever hurt her because he loved her.
Nikki gets CCTV from surrounding buildings whilst Beth listens to the recording. She realises that 1 robber calls the manager by his first name (not on the name badge) . Nikki asks for a list of employees and ex-employees to see if any names are known. The manager supplies the CCTV and list. Leela notices a potential DNA trace left when one touches his face and then the wall and gets forensics to check it. Beth finds a likely suspect in the list of former employees. Smithy saw the son of one known associate of the main suspect at St Hugh's. He tells Beth and Emma to work with C019 to arrest the suspect. They also find Baker Jones, the son at the house.Baker is gentle and not very bright but also definitely his father's son...!
The journalist from earlier arrives at Sun Hill to make a complaint against Beth. Smithy rolls his eyes and doesn't even entertain it given he's the one who leaked to his paper that Larry was out - that he'd heard only through being in St Hughs. He just smirks. "I think you owe PC Green a thank you." he says before walking out.

Baker is clearly nervous and tells Smithy he'll come back later. Smithy's having none of it and orders his pockets turned out. Baker has 2 tickets for Miami for him and his mum in his pocket leaving in 3 hours. The sweat on the wall matches his DNA. Beth plays him the recording and then reasons his dad got a lesser sentence for helping so if he co-operates he'll get help. Baker is almost in tears, saying he can't go inside - he has to look after his mum.
Jo locates Larry Franks at Cindy's grave and approaches him slowly, he sobs that he doesn't want to go back to prison, he doesn't belong there. She tries to get him to open up to her and sits at the grave beside him. She explains she has to arrest him but it's just her and he's not to worry because she'll look after him. He begs her to realise that he'd never kill Cindy.
Smithy is called to the front desk where Baker's mum is - he finds out that she has cancer and Baker is her carer. She wants to see him to find out if they're going away on their final holiday. Smithy sighs. "I shouldn't do this... five minutes - literally." he says, showing her through. Baker cries in his mums arms and apologises, it becoming clear he did it to finance her seeing her sister in America. Baker cries and tells her to still goes and Smithy starts to gently explain she can't if the plane tickets were bought with the proceeds but she cuts him off and gently tells Baker she won't be alone and that he has to co-operate and tell the truth. Baker admits the other suspect had a gun that he didn't know about and received his black eye from trying to get out of it. Smithy tells them that he'll speak to the CPS and make sure they know he co-operated and showed remorse. Whilst he'll still get a custodial sentence - hopefully it will be shorter.
Smithy then goes on to let Beth know that "the aptly named journalist, Mr Cocks, is not going to make a complaint." Beth is so overwhelmed she doesn't know what to do, going in for a hug before realising who it is and shaking his hand instead - making all laugh.
Larry tells Jo that he panicked and needed to get away so he could think. He insists he didn't do it, he did witness her die and admits he was there but he didn't actually kill her. He gets taken away back to the prison but it's clear that Jo doesn't believe that he did it.
Neil calls in on Smithy at the end of the day. Smithy's swamped with the paperwork he never got chance to complete during the day and "Gina has kindly copied all of her emails to my inbox." He is settling in for unpaid overtime to get it done. Neil sympathises, smiling when Smithy remembers what Gina left him in the bottom drawer, the two men sharing a drink together as Smithy thanks Neil for his help.

im new to your block, could you introduce your OCs?
Of course!! Sorry for the wait this took me a long time to type up.
Firstly, welcome! Glad to have you here!
Secondly, this is gonna be a long post so I'm going to keep it under a read more.
Thank you so much for asking! I hope you enjoy! And feel free to ask about anyone
Demon characters across all stories -
Dayzel: he/him, trans/pan, ice/shadow demon hybrid. Dayzel is a bit of a han solo type rogue. He is very charismatic and flirty, with *severe* trauma. He's got mommy issues like crazy, and has had a long string of toxic exs. Was married to Nox for a while. He also worked as a hitman for hire with Rupert when they were dating. And then worked for Berkley for a while kidnapping victims for her. Later is a stay at home Dad while Mibium (his eventually husband) works full time.
Beth: She/her, cis/lesbian, ice/shadow demon hybrid. She is Dayzel's estranged younger sister. She's very prim and proper, until you get to know her and she loosens up. Then she becomes much more mischievous and playful. She's a bit reckless and incredibly stubborn, but ultimately is a good person, despite her past mistakes.
Cole: he/him, too young to know labels, electric demon. Beth's son who is adopted by/raised by Dayzel and Mibium.
Cindy: she/her, cis/bi, true shadow demon. Dayzel and Beth's mother. A truly ferocious woman who wanted "the best" for her kids. Toxic to everyone but Lucian. Was killed by Dayzel when he was 17.
Lucian: he/him, trans/straight, ice demon. Dayzel and Beth's father. Very laid back to the point of neglect.
Rupert: he/him, cis/gay, fire demon. He is also pretty charismatic but in a different direction. Think wolf in sheep's clothing. He's not as smart as some of my other OCS and much prefers brawn over brain. But definitely not a himbo. Runs a criminal gang of assassins and hitmen for hire. Mostly other demons.
Octavian: he/him, cis/bi (masc preference), poison/shadow demon hybrid. A demon aristocrat. A bit of slimeball but everyone loves him or at least pretends to because they're afraid of him. A collector of "fine" things.
Marley: they/poi, nonbinary/panromantic/asexual, poison demon. A chemist specializing in poisons/their own venom. They are very passionate and care deeply, but are a bit of a social outcast. Deeply, deeply craves connection.
Rain: he/him, trans/bi, touch/shadow demon hybrid. Very work focused and detail oriented due to his relationship with Berkley. Very low self esteem. Very little memory aside from living with Berkley. Incredibly lonely... This man needs a hug and a raise.
Reigns: he/him, trans/gay, true shadow demon. He is a "scientist" who works in Richard's lab. He's mostly muscle and sometimes an experiment himself though. He's very kind hearted, but is put in a place where he can't always abide by this. Ian's actual father figure and mentor for many years.
Jane: she/her, cis/bi, touch/shadow demon hybrid. She is a very gentle soul who has seen way too much. She's very laid back and relaxed most of the time, but does get anxious quite easily, especially when it comes to her family. She has no memory of her early childhood and was bounced from home to home the majority of her life. Married to Phoenix, and mother of Dee.
Phoenix: she/her, cis/bi, succubus. She is very... Passionate in a lot of ways. She tends to have a lot more of a temper than her wife, which can get her into trouble sometimes. She works as a secretary. She also streams games in her spare time.
Dee: they/them nonbinary/pan, touch/succubus/shadow demon hybrid. They are still a teenager, but they have a good head about them. Having picked up Phoenix's assertive nature, and Jane's levelheadedness. They can be very reckless at times and don't like listening to authority. They can be very stubborn, but what teenager isn't. Incredibly empathetic.
Dare: they/she/he, genderfluid/bi (feminine preference), true shadow demon. They are Jane and Ian's parent. They are a very gentle and empathetic soul that was thrust in a very bad relationship. The king of hell, alongside Richard. Just wants to be a dad in peace... Living out the cottagecore dream with their partner Mindy.
Richard: he/him, cis/gay, mind demon. The king of hell! He's very charismatic in the sense that he is powerful... But has the personality of a wet paper bag. He is very self centered and selfish to a certain level of cruelty. He's Ian's real dad... But definitely not a good one.
Ian: he/him, cis/bi (feminine preference), mind/shadow demon hybrid. He's got so many daddy issues it's not even funny. He's very quick to temper and struggles to express genuine emotions. He gets overwhelmed easily. He can be gentle with those he cares about though, such as Talon and Ryan. He is pretty suave and very good at manipulating people. He's the secret prince of Hell.
Talon: he/him demiboy/unlabeled, mind/shadow demon. A young clone of Ian that is being raised as Ian's son. He's very curious about the world around him and loves asking questions. Very friendly most of the time, but can be shy if he's already overwhelmed.
Ryan: he/him, trans/gay, true shadow demon. He is sweetie with a, albeit mischievous, heart of gold. He loves to cook for his friends and family. He's very introverted and enjoys the simpler things in life. Takes on being an adopted father to Talon with Ian.
Ash: he/him, cis/gay, touch/??? hybrid. He used to be Ian's best friend. They grew up in the lab together. They had a falling out though. He is very affectionate, sometimes to an uncomfortable degree.
Past: he/they, demiboy/demiromantic/pansexual, fate demon. He is the storyteller of the fate siblings. He is the most sociable and approachable of the siblings. Also, the least outwardly cruel.
Present: they/he/she, genderfluid/bi (masc preference), fate demon. The ambassador of the fate siblings. They are very work oriented and don't really take time for self care. They are easily the most cruel, but have a "work" persona most people like. Old friends with Nox, and they have a *massive* crush on him.
Future: xey/xem, agender/aromantic/asexual, fate demon. The prophet of the fate siblings. The most anti-social of the fates. The oldest and "leader" of the triplets. Xey consider Dare to be xer only true friend.
Isaac: he/him, cis/gay, true shadow demon. A bit of a sleezy guy. He is still powerful, and have influence, but is not well liked. He doesn't mind too much though. He has Luc to torment.
Luc: he/him, cis/pan, fire demon. Ironically has very bad luck. Is very hotheaded and snarky. He tries to be there for others as best he can, but has a lot of his own issues to deal with. Ends up lonely a lot of the time, aside from Isaac.
Zeke: he/him, cis/bi (feminine preference), electric/shadow demon hybrid. A bounty hunter in space in the far, far future when Humanity/angel/demons have taken to the stars. He is another roguish type. Very introverted and spends a lot of time alone. Though he warms up for those he cares about.
Angel characters across all stories -
Berkley: she/he/it, demigirl/demiromantic/demisexual, reaper angel. She is a bit of a mad scientist type. She is also a bit of a social recluse aside from a select few. She is very smart, but very socially inept. Collects teddy bears. She has a very large garden and does a lot of different crafts.
Mindy: she/he, genderfluid/bi (feminine preference), reaper angel. She is like... A feral raccoon. She does not have a lot of social skills due to her past. But her partner, Dare, very much doesn't mind. They can be very sweet at times to those they care about. A bit of himbo.
Mibium: he/him, cis/gay, guardian/healer angel hybrid. He is very much himbo, and a gentle giant. Unless you piss him off, then you're fucked. He deepy, deeply loves and cares about people. He works as a high-school French teacher. His students are convinced he's not human, but don't know what he is. He's a very popular teacher. He's very sociable, if a bit awkward.
Nox: he/him, cis/gay, touch demon/cupid angel hybrid. He is incredibly vain and self-centered. Used to be married to Dayzel, and best friends with Rupert. He is a coward and does not handle being under pressure well.
Omen: he/him, cis/gay, reaper/light angel hybrid. A space bounty hunter in the far, far future. Rivals with Zeke. He has a *massive* crush on him though. Another gentle giant type.
TTRPG characters -
Nom: he/him, trans/pan, Gnome paladin/barbarian. He's my PC that I play in @icyheart-and-friends's DND campaign. He's got a heart of gold but has a lot of trust and self esteem issues. He's a writer under a pen name. Kinda-sorta dating a god? Incredibly loyal and empathetic.
Jax: he/him, trans/bi (masc preference), Tiefling Paladin. He's my PC that I play in @emmettland's DND campaign. He is a soldier that has befriended the king he serves under. Very friendly and the life of the party. Bit of a flirt. Very firm in his moral code. Sees his fellow soldiers as family that he cares deeply about.
Sebastian: he/him, cis/bi, Human. He is very determined, but a bit of a scaredy cat. He woke up in a castle with no memories, and has to keep fighting monsters to get them back. (Castle of memories TTRPG). He's an artist and very kind hearted.

2024 Year in Review/Writing and Hobby Goals 2025
Back for another end of year reflection time!
A year and a half now in my current place and I still love it to bits. Unfortunately wasn't able to do the improvements I'd hoped for this year (cause rising costs of everything), but I hope in the next year or two from saving up and finally a salary increase.
It's been slow going, but I finally feel like my mental health is overall going in a positive direction. I felt my best this year since I started really struggling with my anxiety. Though I still slide into the mindset at times, my self-worth is no longer as tied to work and I'm living a better work life-balance, accepting that that has to be in place for my mental health. Which I wouldn't have done years ago.
Also after years of uncertainty, I finally have some answers as to my struggles with weight and am taking a supplement that I hope I'll see results with into the new year. Thankfully, my migraines didn't pop up as frequently thanks to getting on magnesium (wee!), but my sleep and stomach have been up and down and I'm still trying to figure those out (boo!).
Another sign my mental health has been better, my writing output is the most it has been in years. I surpassed my 25,000 word goal, posting 41,695 words, with between 10,000 - 20,000 words on unposted works. Baldur's Gate 3 (Tav/Gale and Durge[Sienna]/Gale fic) was the biggest driver of the year. Then with finally getting DA: Veilguard (I loathe putting the The in the title, lol) and falling head over heels with Emmrich Volkarin and my Rook, Caliwyn "Cali" Ingellvar, fic has been a happening with them. The real surprises of the year were starting up a multi-chapter BG3 AU of all things where my Bard Tav is under the patronage of Raphael AND fic of another Tav (Arivari "Ari") and her relationship with Raphael. Writing a multi-chaptered AU and a non-canon pairing in the same year was not on my writing bingo card for 2024, lol.
These all will continue to be my areas of focus in 2025. I'd also like to try and start dabbling in my original fiction again (it'll remain on the list until I finally do it!). I still have some My Time at Portia and Sandrock and Stardew Valley things I eventually want to write, but not at top priority (until the writing muse in the back of my brain makes it so).
I also worked on finishing up in progress Ellana/Blackwall ficlets. I decided it was time to set a final chapter number on my collection of ficlets and one-shots for them and Jane/Garrus. I'll never say never to writing for them again (especially when/if we get new ME), but I'm ready to finish the last of their stories and archive my other jotted down ideas.
Some favorites of my posted writing this year:
The Love of Mourn Watchers Ch 1-4 (Veilguard)
Raising of Stakes - Tav/Gale with Raphael interaction (BG3)
Wonders - Tav/Gale (BG3)
Respite - Tav/Gale (BG3)
Taken Care of - Tav/Gale (BG3)
Wounds - Sienna/Gale (BG3)
Stillness - Sienna/Gale (BG3)
Devil of a Patron Ch 1-2 - AU where Bard Tav is under patronage of Raphael (BG3)
Indulgences - Ari/Raphael (BG3)
While I didn't meet my reading goal of 20 new books, I did read 18 (plus, it evened out with all the writing I did, and reading so much Tav/Gale, Tav/Raphael and Emmrich/Rook fanfic). Favorite fiction and nonfiction included Raising Lazarus by Beth Macy; VE Schwab's A Darker Shade of Magic, Vicious, and Vengeful; T. Kingfisher's Paladin's Strength and Paladin's Faith; Murder Your Employer: The McMasters Guide to Homicide by Rupert Holmes; Winners Take All by Anand Giridharadas; and The Demon of Unrest by Erik Larson.
I did well with my games list for this year, playing and finishing Cyberpunk 2077, I Was A Teenage Exocolonist, and Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, all of which I loved. Of course played DA: Veilguard and while there are critiques to be had, there is still so much I love and enjoy about it. In a surprise twist, we also got Life is Strange - Double Exposure with Max this year; again, not a perfect game (some story choices were...interesting and wild to say the least, and I need the next game to see how it all works out), but it was such a joy to play as Max again (a character who still resonates with me).
Other games I enjoyed were Arcade Spirits, Duck Detective - The Secret Salami, Echoes of the Plum Grove, The Oregon Trail, and Supermarket Simulator; with returns to Powerwasher Simulator and Disney Dreamlight Valley. I also finally got my grandfather's old desktop cd-rom drive to work which meant I could play many of my old games. Playing Carmen Sandiego and Jumpstart edutainment, Disney games, Lego Island, Backyard sports, Barbie, and older Sims games as an adult was just delightful nostalgia.
***
