Watching ‘Why Women Kill’ and I actually want to see Beth Ann just repeatedly beat Rob’s head in with a blunt object.

I’m watching the first episode of Why Women Kill and something something, at the beginning Beth Ann’s clothes are out of date and drab, symbolizing her stagnation, but by the time she’s gone to the diner her clothes, though still drab, are in style, symbolizing that she’s already begun her character development

I’m so glad I was able to watch Why Women Kill (2019) season 1 in part bc it was amazing. However, I’m also really happy that I was able to watch Beth Ann’s storyline bc for the last four years I have seen that one clip of her talking to the secretary with a jump to the scene of her saying “I need to buy a gun 😊” . Like genuinely since 2020 I have seen that clip at least like 50 times 😭😭😭, so I’m glad to see the whole story play out

initial post about ST and Why Women Kill

I’m gonna do a full analysis on this at some point, but I was watching some clips of Why Women Kill the other day, and I noticed something:

Rob Stanton’s polo shirt is basically identical to Victor’s moving-in day shirt, and Rob’s general appearance is eerily similar to Victor’s. The same goes for Beth Ann, her hairstyle and dress and earrings are very similar to Virginia’s. The cars in both scenes are even very similar.

Why Women Kill involves three different couples moving into the same mansion throughout the decades (not living there at the same time), and how the woman in each relationship eventually ends up committing murder.

What catches my eye about that last part (aside from pointing to Virginia organizing the murders) is the fact that in Why Women Kill, the scene of the murders has all 3 timelines overlayed with eachother, as if the couples are all living there at the same time (but they’re not, theyre completely unable to see or interact with eachother), which raises an eyebrow for me regarding the Creel timeline weirdness I’ve been looking into lately.

Aylin’s life has always revolved around proving herself. There isn't much known about her life before she became a Carrigan other than that she was born in Istanbul, Turkey. Adopted by the Carrigan's when she was turning two years old, it's uncertain as to why she was abandoned, but when she was found wandering around a marketplace, she was taken to a local orphanage when no one came to claim her. Moving to Aurora Bay was more than a culture shock, but thankfully, she was young enough to assimilate and her adoptive parents was veterans when it came to bringing children into their home. While her adopted home life was full of genuine happiness and love, there was always the feeling that Aylin had to be the best at everything she did. Her parents filled her life with activities; swimming, gymnastics and especially ballet; her favorite of them all.

Full of encouragement, her parents enthused that she should continue and enhance her ballet skills and soon she was fast-tracked to be a lead ballerina. And for so many years, this strict life of dance was all she knew. Graduating high school with good enough grades, the plan was to continue on dancing in college. But life never goes according to plan. When practising relentlessly in a pas de deux, Aylin took a spill and it resulted in a severe head injury that required surgery. Her parents, while supportive, decided that maybe she needed a break from ballet while she recovered.

As her recovery progressed, Aylin realised how much time had gone by without her knowing. She had missed proms, dates, boys and parties; all the things that make up a childhood. After a lot of thought, she decided to retire from dancing and study psychology at the USC. Well, it was her freshman year that she met a senior studying business who charmed her so hard that they were married within a year. Aylin had experienced what she thought was love before, but never like this. She was enamoured from the moment they met. And while she knew her parents would never bless their marriage for being so quick, it didn’t matter. He was all she needed now. 

When it came to arrange the wedding, Aylin had her heart set on finding her birth mother and inviting her. She never told anyone in her family, lest they think they weren't enough for her. There was a deep need to understand where she came from. Since she was now over the age of eighteen, she was able to do so. Despite the protests of her soon-to-be husband, Aylin tried her best to find her mother but could only ever find her name. Sabiha Sadik. Those she contacted advised that her mother was no longer alive and this left Aylin heartbroken. When it came time for her to change her name, she decided to add her birth mother's name at the end of her name, instead of taking her new husbands. It caused many arguments between the two, but Aylin held steadfast that she needed to honor where she came from.

After they were married and both graduated, Ari and Aylin moved to Silicon Valley, where her husband was in deep in developing new businesses from the ground up. In Aylin's mind, however, this meant settling down and starting a family. However, her husband received a promotion, one that he refused to turn down even if it required traveling most of the time and leaving no space for kids anytime soon. It took long hours of ‘mature’ discussions before the two finally came to an agreement, one that Aylin wasn’t entirely content with but she was not about to end her marriage over it, otherwise her meticulous ten-year plan would have definitely fallen apart.

When Ari and Aylin returned back to Silicon Valley from Aurora Bay for his work, she thought it was the right choice. She was doing everything she could for her marriage and it looked like it was working. But it all came out on her 30th birthday. The deep dark secret that had haunted their marriage finally came out. Once Aylin had learned of the emotional affair Ari had with his co-worker, she couldn't stay. It was the betrayal, the lying - the thought of denying herself for so long to make a marriage work that was doomed from the start. Without a second thought, Aylin packed her stuff and moved back into the holiday house in her home town.

Review of Why Women Kill

Several moons ago, I saw on TikTok scenes from, what I thought was a film, Ginnifer Goodwin as a housewife who wants to murder her husband. Obviously, I had to see it. Then I saw edits of Lucy Liu finding out that her husband was gay and dealing with it, so I looked up both movies because I love both actresses and to my surprise it was a series, with other actors that I adore.

The series is called Why Women Kill by creator Marc Cherry, which features three timelines that take place in the same house with three different couples. The first line is set in 1963 with Ginnifer Goodwin as Beth Ann Stanton who discovers that her husband is unfaithful. The second line is set in 1984 with Lucy Liu as Simone Grove who discovers that her third and current husband is gay. And the third line is in 2019 with Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Taylor Harding who welcomes her girlfriend into her home along with her husband and how that changes the dynamics of her open marriage.

I loved the performances of our protagonists, Lucy definitely takes the title of the character with the most iconic lines in the series. Ginnifer fits the role of Beth Ann like a glove, a very good performance that recognizes the strengths of the actress. Kirby is amazing at portraying this complex character and how she deals with her world, where she accepts responsibility for his actions. The actors have great chemistry with each other, and the choice to make the house the main location is excellent.

With this said, let's get to the bad. The third story, Kirby's, needed more polishing, I feel like this perspective on polyamorous couples or open marriages was superficial. I think they should just focus on the relationship between the husband and Taylor, adding the girlfriend requires a deeper exploration with more screen time. More than anything because of the novelty and recent acceptance, as rejection, of that community. Another aspect is the ending, the decision to put all the endings together does not seem appropriate to me; there was so much chaos, conflict resolution, and different tones to each story that didn't quite match. This highlights the end of the second line more against the other two.

It is a very good series that illustrates the dynamics in loving relationships, it has very good photography, and it has a defined style, something that many series struggle with in their first season. I'm excited to see the second season, I think it has a very good base to continue. I give it a 9 out of 10, for the handling of the third story, but with everything else it makes for an incredible story.
