"May I ask your name?" This was going well, Kagome thought. Humans weren't so difficult to figure out after all.
"It's Kouga."
"Kouga," she said, enjoying the feel of his name on her tongue. "I am Kagome, of the Eastern Wolf Clan."
"Nice to meet you." Extending his large hand, Kagome surveyed it before gripping it in hers. She tried to fight the smile threatening to split her face and the heat creeping up her chest. A strong male indeed. Now was the time to state her intentions in a civilized, yet pointed manner.
"After much deliberation with my betas and careful observation of your social skills and combat prowess, I would like you to consider me as your future mate."
"Okay, that was actually pretty nice-"
"I believe that our mating would be advantageous to both clans, and would result in many daughters, all of whom will grow to be fine and mighty warriors."
"Well, there it is."

Hey happy to have you back, i was so excited to see the ask box open so lemme just ask if you can do a Male!Kagome scenario with kouga and Ayame. Like, Ayame thinking that Kouga is interested in another woman and going to confront her only to discover that the other woman is a pretty boy priest (and maybe she lowkey wants Kouga to share)
Here you are, dear, I hope you enjoy!
Green eyes narrowed as she practically gnawed on her lower lip, she had a hunch, a twisting in her stomach and now it was nearly exploding. So, when the next opportunity finally arrived, she took action, her words were always brushed off, and with her suspicions, her heart couldn’t take anymore!
It was impossible to keep up, but following his trail wasn’t difficult, she also recognized his scent by heart. So she was confused when the trail lead to a group that consisted mostly of humans, dangerous ones at that.
Just what was Kouga doing consorting with humans?!
Regardless, she, Ayame of the Northern Wolf Tribe, was more than prepared to deal with the threat to both Kouga and her relationship with him! She was not afraid to show the interloper what a real female was about. Kouga needed a strong female as a mate to stand at his side, and she was that female!
Not some village trollop.
When she arrived, she kept downwind, stuck to the shadows and observed the group. Upon seeing the female, green eyes narrowed. A demon slayer. Sure, she was a strong female, but Kouga would have better luck convincing a rock to fly than that woman to mate with him.
“How’s my future mate?” the question, which had sounded obviously genuine in affection tore at Ayame, but instead of wallowing in the pain, she was ready to pounce and prove her worth against the other female.
“For the last time, Kouga, I’m not-”
The world came to a screeching halt. Her battle cry died a quick death before it could even take flight, her landing from her rushed approached less than graceful as her eyes widened. Arms fell limply to her sides as her gaze went from the sole female of the group, to a young man that was currently being held by Kouga. “...oh…”
Kouga’s sputtering went ignored, the questioning of the others in the group weren’t even heard. Instead, Ayame was solely focused on the male across from her, hands still being held affectionately by Kouga.
“Oh? Can we help you, Miss?” the question, and being addressed so politely from a stranger, and a handsome one at that, had her blushing.  She was used to reminding other wolves of her status, and humans normally treated her like some beast or barbarian. But not this man.
And as for handsome… his looks mirrored Kouga’s! Well, mostly in coloring. Same raven black hair, only this male’s had cut it shorter though it was just long enough to frame his masculine face. Bright blue eyes, though a tad darker than Kouga’s. And where Kouga was a sweetened caramel from his constant time in the sun, this male’s skin was paler in contrast even if it was beginning to show signs of time spent outdoors.
“Miss, is everything alright?” the male gave his hands a few tugs, quick to throw Kouga a look that went ignored as Kouga was pinning Ayame with a slightly shocked look.
“Oh! U-um, I came looking for the fe-female that stole Kouga’s attention and affection from me?” she blinked when Kouga’s two betas stumbled through the bushes, panting as they cried out ‘Big Brother Kaito!’ no doubt attempting to warm Kouga about her.
The inu let out a bark of laughter. “Ha! Turns out you really are a bitch at heart, Kaito-chan!”
Kaito’s expression instantly darkened, mirroring Kouga’s own, as they were instantly pinned on the inu. “Inuyasha.” the little, yet low growl, in his warning tone caused Ayame’s heart to flutter. “Don’t.”
“What’r’ya gonna do? Sit me?” a snort was accompanied by a flippant wave of his hand. “Go ahead, ain’t gonna change the fact that the flea bitten wolf sees you as some bitch. You and the other boys from that damned school are all a bunch of pansies; weak and far too much like females it makes me sick. Bet you cry and moan-!”
“Osuwari.”
Ayame actually shivered at the low growl, and the prefect teeth that were bared. She didn’t know humans could mimic inu and okami youkai so well, but she was thoroughly impressed.
“Shippo and my little brother are better mannered than you are.” a childish ‘Ya!’ revealed the kitsune tike to be Shippo.
The priest was also seeing to the welfare of a kitsune cub?! Just what else was this priest Kaito capable of? It didn’t matter, the instincts that led her here had her approach both Kaito and Kouga, subtly catching the human’s scent. Decidedly clean of the usual human stench, that even the inu seemed to be carrying, mixed with the scents of fields and the forests. It was a heady scent, considering that she could pick up on his power as well, and he was powerful!
“Kouga?” her voice was low as she finally stopped next to the two, knowing she had their attention, her smile grew as she kept her gaze locked on with the handsome priest. “I’ll accept, so long as you share!”
Kouga drew back, pulling Kaito closer to him. The action was hindered when she ducked in and stole a kiss from the shocked priest. “I look forward to getting to know you, Kaito-kun!”
Said priest could only watch the two wolves as they argued over him, feeling like a bone being fought over. Inuyasha was not helping, Sango and Miroku were attempting to hide their amusement, it was only by divine intervention that Shippo didn’t know the truth behind the wolves. Or divine comedy when he added that ‘Kaito-kun loved meeting and getting to know new people.’ Bless the boy, even though the look the red head threw him terrified him.

if you're still taking these, 8 and 9 for dog tags?
HECK YEAH I AM!
The ask box is always open!
Writer asks
8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?
YES ACTUALLY!!!
I took a lot of my husband to create Inuyasha in this one. I didn’t see it at first...but...Ok. This is what he wanted to do for Valentinesday 2020. He asked me to take the day off so we could spend the day together, and then we went for a hike, went to my favorite home goods type of store, and then we had sushi (which is like...my FAVORITE food group), and then he made me a bath for the rest of the night. I’M KEEPING DETAILS PG13. He also has a habit of just randomly sending me flowers. Like...they just randomly show up at work sometimes. For literally no reason. Or at home now...because COVID.
The farmers market was also inspired by a permanent farmers market I’ve been to in Cincinnati, OH, Finnely Market.
Also the seal thing? 100% happened minus the rain and everything that followed. We were at his cousin’s wedding in (I wanna say Santa Monica???) and we decided to go for a walk on the beach. We found the seal, he called animal control, I cried a lot, stayed there until the seal was picked up...He got major brownie points for that.
THAT SAID.
Saucy (Beta for this fic) will swear up and down that I took her navy boy and turned Inuyasha into him. (I’ve never met him, so who is to say?) So really...it depends on who you ask, but I don’t fight her on it because the fic is for her...And my husband works in IT. So maybe Inu is just a fun blend of the two.
I will also say that I made Kagome a librarian because Saucy is one. Thus...her full name being Saucy Librarian...but I’m lazy and never write that in full.
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
OH YES.
In one version, Inuyasha and Kouga were friends. You can kinda see me setting them up for that in Kouga’s first appearance in the fic, but Saucy asked me to change that so...I’M SORRY KOUGA!!!
In another, Kagome and Inuyasha didn’t have a long-distance relationship. She was just a local librarian helping him hunt down the owner of the Dog Tag. That idea was quickly scrapped because I asked Saucy if she wouldn’t rather have them be long distance like her and her guy? (Clearly the answer was yes).
Also...At the moment this is more head canon than written out........BUT....
Since I’m the Inu/Kag “Queen of Angst”...
After Inu got back to the states, he was going to have a phone call from a hospital telling him that, as Kikyo’s emergency contact, she had been hospitalized. This was her ploy to get him to come see her again, and...when he fell asleep in the hospital room due to exhaustion (because let’s face it - he’s the kinda guy who would go see her despite everything), she was going to kiss him and break up with Kagome via his snap chat by sending her a picture.
Inuyasha, meanwhile, is oblivious and had made secretive plans with Miroku and her parents to come in for Thanksgiving to see her and meet them. So...When Kagome, still in the midst of heartbreak (because she had received the photo literally a day before) sees Inuyasha there with her brother, and is all smiles and is affectionate and sweeping her into this long desperate kiss...
She starts wondering what the fuck is going on.
They get back to her parents' house, which is where they are all staying, and they get to her room and he starts looking around. He comments on the stuffed dog toy he won her, and can’t understand why she’s this chilly towards him. He thinks that it’s maybe because he surprised her and it might be too soon for him to meet her parents, but he does a very dumb horny guy thing (because he’s been on that ship for MONTHS surrounded mostly by guys) and takes off his shirt and says he’s going to go take a shower...and she should join him.
This is where things changed.
In the OG version, they proceed to have a fight about him breaking up with her and pretending that he never did it. They figure out that Kikyo is the one who sent her the snap, not him, and once that gets clear up, the fight turns into one about trust. Because how could she really believe that he would do something like that to her? They ultimately break up, and he sleeps on the floor in her room after she convinces him to just stay for the holiday. It’s Thanksgiving. He shouldn’t go back to CA alone right now, and he already has the return flight booked...They spend the weekend pretending to be a couple in love, and while they are, they’re also the only ones who know that they are over. When they got back to the airport to drop him off, they kiss one last time, and when he says goodbye...That was supposed to be it. Because they are over.
She still has a ticket to go out to CA though for winter break, so she does. She stays with her grandparents and goes to visit her brother at his apartment a few times. Inuyasha is still Miroku’s neighbor though...and Miroku is still up to his old tricks. He gets them alone together once, and they slowly work on mending fences and realize that they still want each other. By the time she goes home, they’re back together.
In the new version, the fight in Kagome’s room isn’t about trust, because she caught on pretty quickly after that “I’ve missed you” kiss that something must have happened...it’s about the fact that he had come back and hadn’t told her, and that he even went to see Kikyo in the first place. He tells her that it was just because he wanted to surprise her for Thanksgiving - nothing else. And he went to see Kikyo because the hospital had called him. They ultimately make up, and she does join him for that shower.
Things just felt more realistic in version two. It felt like the angst wasn’t going to be natural in version one. Like it would have been forced. And really...Once you stop trusting another person...How do you even come back from that? It just felt like too much, so it got chopped.
But.
Then again.
So did this whole second half of the story...
THANKS FOR THE ASK ANON!!!!!!! You were not expecting a dissertation on this, LMAO!!!

6 for the fic meme?
End of Year Fic-Writer || @misku-nimfa
6. What’s your favourite piece of dialogue you wrote this year?
Oof. This is hard. I had to go back and revisit all the things I’ve written this year to find my favorite and I keep going back to this scene in the second chapter of What Could Have Been:
“So you feigned concern and took me away from the pack for a week?”
“There was,” he snarled, the frightening sound filling the clearing, “nothing feigned about my reaction to smelling your blood.”
Kagome backed up again and he followed, over and over until her back hit a tree.
“Your scent in my den was already driving me crazy. Clinging to my betas, lingering on the air, I could taste you on my tongue. And then you started bleeding.” Clawed hands went against the tree on either side of her head and Kouga caged her in. He was so close, she could feel the heat off his body.
“Do you know how good you smelled? How good you still smell?” He brushed his nose along the line of her jaw, breathing in deeply. “And then to have you to myself this entire week, watching your barriers drop until you finally relax around me. You don’t have the slightest idea what it’s been like for me.”
“K-Kouga—“
“Nothing I have done toward you has been feigned in the slightest,” he growled, “but if you want me to act on all the things I’ve hidden, just say the word and I’ll do it.”
Every time I reread it, it just hits. It’s all the differences in this Kouga slamming forward and reminding Kagome what she’s dealing with. I love it. When writing, I didn’t think this conversation would be the memorable one, but it really is for me now.

CHAPTER 3
Just one more hit and then we're through 'Cause you could never love me back Cut every tie I have to you 'Cause your love's a fucking drag
But I need it so bad
- 'Nicotine' Panic! At the Disco
Kouga gripped the edges of the make-shift rock table so hard it was threatening to break as soon as he entered the private den where he usually held his war-related meetings with his higher-ranked pack members.
He let out a raged, shaky breath, while his clawed fingers grinded over the rocky surface causing an unpleasant sound; all in order to keep himself from turning to dust the entire fucking mountain.
His whole body was tensed up, all muscles flexed so hard that if anyone touched him right now would've said he was made of solid iron. His lips twitched, fangs pocking out dangerously, threatening to let out a spine-chilling growl. His eyebrows, deep in a frown, as he closed his eyes tightly, hiding their now blood-red color. His nostrils flared, intoxicated in a scent he was not supposed to smell ever fucking again.
His eyes, haloed crimson, only snapped open when he heard his two idiotic 'second in command' entering the den, to then stand behind him as they fought nervous fidgets.
It took everything inside him not to rip them apart right there and then.
"I wonder if I haven't made myself clear enough before" He said, some words coming out in animalistic snarls, as he refused to turn to them still. If he turned before calming his youkai down, he'll rip them apart before at least hearing what could've possessed them to do what they did; and calming down was proving to be a difficult task right now, with her scent, her aura, her everything taking over him like some goddamn poison.
"K-Kouga w-we can expla-" Ginta started to say, as his voice trembled in fear.
Koga didn't even give him a chance to finish the sentence.
"Yeah, you fucking better!" He shouted, youkai voice interlacing with his, as the rock table snapped in two.
The two of them nearly jumped out of their skin when Kouga turned to face them.
"I wanna know what in hell possessed you two, to decide it was great idea to go against a direct order of mine" He snarled, but felt himself calm down just enough so his youkai was tamed down. "Every fucking wolf in here was ordered to never, under any circumstances, let her step a foot on the mountain. So, help me understand how you two that knew exactly what went down, out of every single demon, brought her here?!"
"W-We didn't want to, I swear!" Hakkaku stuttered out. "We told her that we were ordered not to let her in the mountain, but she refused to listen!"
"Y-Yeah, she basically black-mailed us!" Ginta agreed quickly.
"What?" Kouga spat out, not really as a question but more in disbelief at how much stupidity was coming out of his betas' mouths.
"W-We explained her the situation, a-and told her to go home, told her it was for the best-" Hakkaku started.
"A-And told her how dangerous it was for her to be in the woods at the moment!" Ginta added.
"And we told her we weren't allowed to take her to the mountains so w-we were just gonna escort her out of the woods" Hakkaku continued.
"A-And then she was like 'Pity, I'm not going anywhere'" Ginta said, trying to imitate Kagome's voice in a high pitch tone.
"Y-Yeah! And then she was like 'And if you're not going to help me, I'll get to the mountains on my own. I'm not going home until I talk to Kouga'" Hakkaku said then, now also imitating Kagome's voice.
"And you know how stupid that was gonna be! The woods packed with northerns and westerns, and the eating humans' treaty! Kami, she was already wounded as well"
Kouga's youkai flared at this, and he wanted to punch it for it.
Of course he knew she was wounded. It was one of the reasons he turned back to the mountains, fast as lighting, a few minutes after he felt her presence near his home while he was miles away from it.
Kouga was not only a wolf demon, but an alpha at that. His senses excelled almost every demon's alive, and also excelled all of his pack member's senses by far. He could hear, smell and sense everything that was miles away from him. On top of that, Kagome was his-
He started to sense her just as soon as she was a few miles away from her village.
He was far away at that moment, nearing the Southern Lands when he first felt her.
He found it odd, but his mind soon figured that maybe she was traveling somewhere. His lands, while considerably far away, surrounded her village somewhat. So, she would've had to cross them if she wanted to travel pretty much anywhere.
The fact that it was the first time ever she moved from that village was nagging him, but he ignored it.
He needed to triple check that the Southern tribe was still set on not partaking on the war. They were having enough on their plates as it was. While the Eastern tribe still outnumbered the Northern and Western tribes combined (just one of the several reasons there was a war in the first place) and his men were undoubtedly stronger and smarter than their opponents, he wasn't sure if they would be able to handle another tribe joining the opposite side, no matter how superior they were in numbers or battling skills.
He knew that the leaders of the North tribe were going to try to lure the South to join them. So, he had to make sure that the Southern alpha was still set on his first decision; and if he was not, Kouga would enjoyed to help him stay put.
That's why he didn't stop nor turned around when he felt her. After all, only one of his many forests was the one with that 'treaty' he made.
'Every nearby village knows what's going on' he remembered thinking. 'I'm certain hers' knows too, and if they don't, villagers on her way will warn her' was another thought that crossed his mind at that time 'She's not stupid'.
Though, something that was nagging his mind just a bit was the fact that she was almost alone. He could feel the neko-demon with her, but no one else. No mutt.
He briefly wondered if it was because InuYasha was a hanyou, that's why he was having trouble sensing him, and her other travel companions were human. Sure, she was human as well, but she was… she was Kagome, of course he'd feel her.
What he needed to do regarding the Southern tribe was extremely important, and could not wait. He was in charge of a numerous pack facing a war right now. He was an alpha, he couldn't turn back on his tribe, much less for her, out of all beings in the universe.
Not to mention, he truly didn't want to see her to begin with.
So, he continued to run his 'errands' while unconsciously keeping tabs of her movements.
He was done dealing with the Southern alpha when his heart nearly skipped a beat.
She was nearing the edge of the forest.
Why on hell she was nearing the edge of the forest.
Without so much a word, and as soon as he ruthlessly forced the South to stay out of his way, he bolted towards his lands.
Moments later, when she was already undoubtedly flying across the forest, she was wounded, badly.
With now crimson eyes, and growling through sharp-mortal fangs, he picked up his pace.
He mentally thanked whatever god or devil was around when Ginta and Hakkaku found her and saved her.
He allowed himself to calm down once he stopped smelling blood pouring out of her.
Still, he was angry at himself. Sure, he could feel bad if anything ever happened to her, but the way he reacted? Desperation, madness, rage consuming him in his entirety, his youkai almost taking completely over after centuries of being in complete control over it.
This tiny woman always sent him over the edge.
He reflected that no matter how much distance was between them, how many years they spent without even catching a glimpse of the other, he would always react this way when it came to her. After all, it was natural, quite literally. She was his, regardless of whatever she tried to convince herself. He was hers, she would never be able to be indifferent when it came to him, no matter how hard she tried.
She would always be his, she would always feel like a part of him.
So, he would always lose the reigns when it came to her, no matter how badly he didn't wanna see her ever again.
Still, he could not fit in his own and utter shock when he realized that not only she was indeed going for his den, but that fucking Ginta and Hakkaku were escorting her.
Just when he thought they'd matured at last.
"W-What would you have us do in his situation?" Ginta asked, bringing Kouga back to the present issue.
"I would've you take her back to where she came from, dragging her by the feet if fucking needed!" Kouga growled out, making them both jump back. "You should've escorted her back to her damned village by force if she refused, I don't give a fuck; place her on the mutt's arms with a bow on top, and tell him to put a freaking leash on her if necessary to keep this from happening ever again!"
"Kouga you know her better than we do! She would've tried again! You know how she is, sis would never-" If looks could kill, Hakkaku would've dropped dead on the spot. "KAGOME! I mean Kagome" He corrected himself instantly.
One of the other explicit, direct orders from Kouga was to never, ever call her sister again.
"You do know that there's a hundred demons outside waiting for me to execute you?" Kouga said through a clenched jaw.
Hell, while he didn't want to kill them, because they were Ginta and Hakkaku after all, he did want to hurt them, really, really bad.
Hakkaku gulped down in fear and Ginta sighed.
"We know" Ginta said looking down at the floor. "And we understand and accept if you do" Kouga raised an eyebrow at this.
"We do?" Hakkaku squeaked out, looking at his best friend in disbelief.
"Yes" Ginta said, without a single hesitation. "At least I do" Kouga blinked in surprise at this. "I don't regret what I did" Kouga clenched his jaw "I wouldn't have been able to live with myself if she died when I could've protected her" Ginta continued, and it took everything inside Kouga not to react to the statement "I mean… She's Kagome" He added, and Kouga knew he meant 'she's sister'. "So, yeah… I'm good with whatever punishment you see fit, Alpha Kouga"
Kouga didn't know how he managed not to flinch at that. Everyone in the pack called him that, except these two. So, it only meant one thing. Whatever Ginta was saying was 100% serious.
"Y-Yeah, me too!" Hakkaku said after a moment.
Kouga sighed and tried not to give any other sort of reaction.
He couldn't blame them for the way they were acting. Wolf demons were extremely familiar beings, they depended on each member of the pack, just like each member of the pack depended on them. Kagome was his intended mate, their Alpha's intended mate. It's no surprise that they would've tried to protect her. But, it wasn't only that. Ginta and Hakkaku were Kagome's friends, too, unlike the rest of the pack.
Not a single pack member would dare go against an Alpha's direct order. Not only because there're definitely less painful ways to die, but because it was also a sign of disrespect towards the pack, too.
But, Ginta and Hakkaku would, because Kagome (at least once upon a time) was their friend.
It'll almost felt unfair to blame them. But, they had to be punished, anyone else would've dealt with his ruthless fury, he couldn't just skip past them completely.
So the question was, what to do now?
"You need to get rid of her" Kouga finally said, earning a dumbfounded look from both of them. "And you'll loose your privileges until I feel you can be trusted again" He added, frowning at them while showing fangs to let them know he was being serious. "Go, now" He said. "I don't want to see her when I get out of here"
"Kouga there's something else, though…" Ginta said, and as if he was reading his mind, Hakkaku turned to him with a concerned glance as well.
Kouga said nothing, tired of discussing and negotiating with this two. They should've just shut their mouths and run towards the village with Kagome in hand while thanking Kami he had mercy on them by now. So, he just waiting for him to continue.
"There's not a single trace of InuYasha on her"
X
It was funny.
It was funny how she was almost atop of a mountain right now, yet she felt the Earth swallowing to the very center.
Kirara, still on her smaller form, was growling consistently while each hair on her pelt was up… but, that didn't stop anyone from looking at her.
As soon as Ginta and Hakkaku disappeared from her sight, tailing a raging Kouga, each and every single pair of eyes (at least the alive ones) turned to her, accusingly.
At first, she pointedly ignored every of them.
Her eyes went down to the ground, as she tried to focus on petting Kirara as best as she could.
It worked well at first, but now? It was impossible to ignore the comments that were being whispered all around her.
"How dare she come back after rejecting him like that?!"
"And for a disgusting hanyou, no less!"
"Great timing, too! In the middle of the war no less, as if Kouga wasn't stressed enough as it is!"
"He better not take her back, after she disrespected him like that!"
"I agree, showing up here when she pleases, the nerve!"
"Kouga deserves so much better"
"Most of the females are prettier than her, too…"
"Maybe that mutt kicked her out, that's why she's here with her tail between her legs!"
"Don't be stupid, it's because of the bond! It was only a matter of time…"
"Still, he shouldn't take her back"
"Why would he? He has enough female attention here…"
Kagome felt like she sunk down half her size, and tears were pricking the corners of her eyes.
They were right, for the most part. Except for the part where they implied that she rejected him knowing the truth, which she didn't. She knows she should've given him the benefit of the doubt, but how could she know?
'He has enough female attention here'
That broke Kagome's heart in a trillion pieces. Sure, she knew better than to expect Kouga to be mate-less and just loyal to a woman who has rejected him, told him she never wanted to see him again, and disappeared for three years. Still, that didn't mean it didn't hurt like a truck from back home was running over her heart over and over.
She tried to calm herself down, and remember Sango's advice.
She wasn't here to be with him, at least that wasn't the most important thing.
She was here to apologize. To accept her mistake, beg for forgiveness, and hope Kouga could at least take her back as a friend.
Still, it appeared that some part of her held to the hope of him still being in love with her.
That part of her was having the butt-kick of it's life.
What made her more angry, though, was the fact that these demons were probably reading her like an open book. Smelling each and every emotion their comments were causing on her.
"And to think poor Ginta and Hakkaku have to pay the price of this"
"I know… Kouga's probably gonna hold their execution this evening"
That made her head snap up.
Execution?!
She knew they were in trouble, big trouble, but definitely not that kind of trouble!
Ginta and Hakkaku were Kouga's best friends, for crying out loud! Surely he wouldn't!
In the midst of panic, Kagome was still able to focus for a moment and search for Kouga's aura. It took her almost a millisecond, it was impossible for her not to feel him, anyways. Not with him being close to her.
Without sparing so much a glance to the wolf demons looking at her, she started to walk towards where she felt him, as wolf demons got out of her way, too shocked to even stop her.
She followed the feeling towards a tunnel and after a while, still gripping Kirara on her arms, she came face to face with an entrance to a smaller den.
Guarded by two wolf demons.
"Eh! What are you doing here?!" One of them instantly exclaimed at the sight of her.
"This tunnel is off-limits! Only the ones that were explicitly called by Alpha Kouga can be here!" The other one added.
"Let me in, I need to speak to him" Kagome said, unintimidated by the two bulky wolf demons.
"Haven't you heard us, lil human? You're not supposed to be here!" The first one exclaimed pointedly stepping in front of the entrance, blocking her way.
"I won't ask again. I need to speak to him, now!" Kagome said unwavering.
"Now listen here you little bit-"
It happened way faster than any of them could've expected. A shot of lilac beaming reiki shot from her hand and towards them. It was in no way something that could've harmed them gravely, just superficial. Something to simply leave them unconscious for a little while.
She expected them to understand the urgency in her tone of voice, but it became clearer and clearer with each passing second that whatever was going on between wolf demons, something that they would never do was disobey their Alpha, under any circumstances.
After looking down at the unconscious demons on the ground, checking for anything out of what she expected, she turned to the entrance and without a second thought, running the fur that was serving as a door/curtain.
The den was even further away from what she anticipated, not just at the other side of the 'curtain'. She had to walk a shorter tunnel once again, before finally entering a small, fire-lit den.
The three people in there instantly turned to her.
Her heart leaped to her throat once her chocolate brown eyes connected with icy blue ones.
"Kouga" She whispered under her breath again, much like a few moments ago, when she first saw him.
And, just like when he first saw her, he turned to Ginta and Hakkaku with a deep frown.
"Take her back to her village, now" He growled at both of them, making Kagome shiver at both: the sound of his voice for the first time in years and the danger in his growl.
Ginta opened his mouth, as if to object, but he didn't have the chance to let out a sound.
"Ginta, Kami help me, if a single sound comes out of your goddamn mouth, I'll rip you apart right here, right now." Kouga growled again, making Ginta snap his mouth shut instantly.
"No!" Kagome exclaimed as soon as Kouga's threat was out. "You can't murder them!" Kouga turned to her again, looking rather confused this time. "I heard about the execution! You can't kill them!"
"What?!" He exclaimed nearly bewildered. It was the first word he directly spoke to her. 'What'.
"It was me! I blackmailed them. I know they disobeyed your orders, but I put them both in an impossible position. It's not their fault! You can't kill them because of me!" Kagome was nearly babbling now, tears running from the corners of her eyes. "They were just trying to help me! I knew they wouldn't let me go on my own because they're both so kind hearted! And I took advantage of it! It was me! Please don't kill them, they're your best friends, you cannot kill them!"
"No one's getting killed!" Kouga finally exclaimed in exasperation.
Kagome stopped abruptly.
"What? There won't be an execution?" Kagome asked.
"No si-Kagome" Hakkaku said "Kouga decided for another punishment. We appreciate your concern, tho-"
"Alright, that's enough. Take her to her village now before I change my mind" Kouga said, and started to walk towards one of the edges of the den, where another rock- makeshift table was and Kagome watched as Ginta and Hakkaku walked towards her with sympathetic look on their faces.
She instantly took a step back from them.
"Wait-No!" She said, bringing Kirara even closer to her as she stepped back. "I told them I'm not going anywhere until we talk!" She said, turning to Kouga that was now a few meters away from her.
She literally saw how all his muscles stiffened in tension and how his aura grew in anger.
Kagome gulped down, as she also bit her lips. She knew she was pressing her luck and probably shouldn't be speaking at him like this, all things considered. But, what else what she supposed to do to make him listen?
It was crystal clear that he did not want her here.
"Oh, you told them?" Kouga scoffed back instantly in a sarcastic manner, making Kagome regret instantly the way she spoke the words. "So, of course, you expect them to do as you say, over their orders, my orders"
"I didn't mean it like that-" Kagome said with a small voice, glancing at the ground once again, but Kouga quickly interrupted her.
"Seriously, though, Kagome" Kouga then asked, and Kagome turned her eyes on him once again. He was looking straight at her this time, eyes piercing hers, unwavering. "What the fuck are you even doing here?"
The sound of her name coming out of his lips after so long sent hot jolts all over her body, yet question and the harshness of it crushed Kagome's heart, but she didn't blame him for asking that nor for being angry. Who wouldn't?
"I'm here to talk" She said once again.
"Talk about what, exactly?" He scoffed and took a few steps towards her but still maintained a considerable distance between them. "There's absolutely nothing to talk about, Kagome. It's been three fucking years, for Kami's sake!" He nearly roared, making Kagome flinch. "What on hell makes you think that I'll sit down and chat with you after all this fucking time?!" Kagome opened her mouth to talk, but he stepped even closer to her, and interrupted her before she could say anything. "And in the middle of the fucking war, no less! Like I actually have the time for more shit!"
"I didn't know you were at war!" Kagome finally roared back. "I only knew when Ginta and Hakkaku told me after they found me!"
"And yet you still decided to put up your little stunt and force them to bring you here instead of turning around and going back home!" Kouga raged on. "Ya know, you should be grateful it was them the ones to find you and bring you here. Because if it were any of my other pack members they would be fucking dead already!"
"I'm sorry, alright?! I know I shouldn't be inconveniencing you right now, but I couldn't wait any longer!" She defended herself.
"And just how much did you wait, Kagome? A year? A month? Or was it just a few days ago that the mutt finally got tired of you so you decided to settle for the next best as soon as you could?!" Kouga growled out.
"It's not like that, Kouga, and you know it!" Kagome said, now actually feeling offended. Yes, she knew that once upon a time (without knowing any better) she chose InuYasha over Kouga but it was because she didn't know the truth back then and she knew Kouga knows that! Besides, implying that she simply just moved on to the next plate once she had her fill of the first one, was an insult.
"I don't care, Kagome! I, sincerely, don't give a fuck!" Kouga said with such an angered force that made everyone in the room flinch and step back. "This is not your place." He said then. "You shouldn't be here. You should be at home with your mate or your family or whoever the fuck is there, and you should go back there right now" he said with finality. "Take her home" He turned to the two frightened wolf demons that were looking at both of them in terrified shock and turned his back to her again as he moved towards the edge of the den once more.
The two of them, with cautious movements, started walking towards Kagome.
"No" She said, and snatched back the arm that Ginta tried to grab. "I refuse to go anywhere until we talk!" She loudly declared again, frowning and watching as Kouga turned to her once again.
"Then they'll drag you there, I don't care" He said and pretended to shrug her off.
"Then I'll come back" Kagome said challengingly, frown deep on her face as she advanced towards him. "And again, and again, and again! No matter how many times you have them push me away, I will return! And if I have to purify every single one of your wolves to get you to talk to me, I will!"
Kouga eyed her, head to toe, without giving away any emotion for her to read, before he turned to his packmates again.
"Are you to deaf or something?" He simply said, and Kagome watched from the corner of her eye how both of them trembled but advanced nervously towards her again.
"Ginta, Hakkaku, I swear to god, if you lay a single claw on me I'll knock you both unconscious" She said threateningly and shot a spark of her reiki for good measure, making both of them instantly retract from her.
"B-Boss?" Hakkaku stuttered, as both of them looked towards their Alpha, unsure of what to do.
Kouga didn't even glance at them, his icy blue eyes still on Kagome, surveying her, observing her, with that very same aura he had when she first saw him. His body tensed up, eyes sharp… just as if he was about to be attacked, as if he was about fight.
Kagome knew that he wouldn't dare touch her right now, not like she would ever hurt him, but still. He also wouldn't let his packmates suffer a potential purification just to get her out of her mountains.
She also knew, that this was because Kouga didn't know the extend of her powers now. Back when he knew the extend of them, she could only summon them when using a bow and arrow.
This was unknown territory, and wolves weren't anything but cautious and protective of their pack members. He wouldn't risk it… but she also didn't want to corner him like this.
He was mad, and rightfully so. He wanted her out of his home, also rightfully so, since she came here uninvited. Plus, not only she was cornering him right now, but also challenging his power, his position as Alpha… in his home, in front of his packmates.
Still, she needed to talk to him and she refused to spend another day away from him without explaining herself.
They needed to meet at a middle point, though.
"I'm sorry, Kouga" She said at first, but he didn't even flinch. Attack mode still on. "I know you don't want to talk to me or listen to me or even have me near you right now" She said. "And you're absolutely right to feel that way. It's not fair for me to force you to talk right now, I don't wanna force you if you don't want to" It was only then when Kouga blinked at her, probably believing she was gonna accept and turn back to where she came from. "But I can't go back. I can't stay away from you without me saying what I need to say. Without you listening to me" She continued, her voice wavering while her eyes got teary. "I will stay here" She stated, watching as Kouga clenched his jaw at this. "I will stay here, waiting as long as I have to. Weeks, months, years, whatever. I'll wait here until you're ready to hear me talk." Kouga frowned even deeper to her now, and she felt Ginta and Hakkaku's eyes looking at her disbelievingly. "I won't bother you, I promise. I'll help you, help with the war. I'll earn my keep, or whatever you need. But, I can't go back. I can't go back, I'm sorry"
She didn't know if Kouga understood what she was saying or not. She didn't know if he understood the real necessity she had to stay -to stay with him- at least until they talked.
However, she did know that he understood the fact that she was going to fight -and most likely win- if they tried to remove her from this mountains.
It felt like time was passing agonizingly slow as she waited for a reaction coming from him, but Kouga didn't even flinch for the longest time, until he turned to his betas once again.
"She's your problem" He said at first "You'll deal with her. You'll find her something to do, where she'll be staying, what she'll be eating" Kagome couldn't help but feel completely bothersome and unwanted. The scene looked like a father talking to his children about a stray puppy he didn't want. "I don't want to be bothered by this not even once." He said the last part looking pointedly at her, to then turn to his betas once again. "I trust I'm being crystal clear this time" He finally said, nearly growling at the end.
"Y-Yes, Kouga!" Ginta and Hakkaku stuttered out.
One last menacing look was all it took for them to start to dragging Kagome out of the den they were currently in. Here only choice being to accept being dragged by them while looking at Kouga until they finally left the den.
The look Kouga gave her as she exited the den was one she never in a million years expected to ever get from him, and one she prayed she never have to see again being directed at her.
She swallowed the need to cry and she directed her focus at both wolf demons walking her through the maze of dens.
She wondered how anyone could find their way in this mountains.
'Scent, for starters. Plus, they lived here their entire lives, probably.' her mind instantly supplied, as she started to get nervous as to how she was supposed to survive in here in the first place if she couldn't even find her way through the tunnels. Sure, she could find her way to Kouga, just as easily as she could breathe. His aura so present and intense, constantly luring her towards it now that they were so close. But, she figured that Kouga would rather have his eyes clawed out than having her near, at least at the moment. He needed time and she understood, so keeping out of his way for now was for the best.
Ginta and Hakkaku stopped suddenly, in front of another door/curtain fur pelt hanging in front of what seemed a small den.
"Here, this should suffice" Ginta said, moving the pelt out of the way for them to go in.
When the three of them were inside the pitch black den, Kagome felt Hakkaku move towards one of the edges, and she hear her grab what she thought were rocks, before hearing how he friction them to create fire, and then light a large wax candle that was sitting in a carved hole in the right wall of the den.
The small place light up instantly, warm orange light washing over it.
Kagome instantly turned to observe the room they where in. It was small, just like she thought when she was at the entrance, maybe even a bit smaller than her room back home and definitely smaller than the hut she had back in Kaede's village.
She could see there were two more carved wholes with candles, one in the left cavern wall and once behind the makeshift bed (considerably large for the room, actually) made of a base of straws and topped with a thin fur pelt that she couldn't identify from what it was made. A tiny make-shift rock table besides the bed, some leftover-burnt out firewood in a corner that she supposed was a spot for a fireplace during winter, and that was pretty much it.
Not that she complained at all, it was actually a lot more than she expected.
"Didn't wolves sleep in packs?" Her thoughts came out of her mouth.
They both look at her a little bit surprised, probably not expecting such knowledge.
"Unmated wolves sleep together" Hakkaku clarified "There are two larger dens, for unmated males and females"
"Yeah, when a couple mates, though, we have several of these smaller dens available for them" Ginta added.
"Oh!" Kagome said, kind of embarrassed. "You shouldn't be giving this to me, then! I can sleep with the rest of the unmated girls!" Kagome assured.
Even if she would definitely be nervous and uncomfortable sleeping with a bunch of stranger girls that surely hated her, she didn't want to take any advantage of anything in any way that might bother Kouga.
"Don't be ridiculous!" Ginta quickly assured with an easy smile. "You'll be much comfortable here! Plus, much safer as well!"
Kagome's eyes widened at the last statement. What the heck does that meant? Was she in actual danger in here? Could some of Kouga's wolves actually hurt her? She knew that they were angry at her and what she did, but Kouga was letting her stay here. Surely they wouldn't attack her, right?
Hakkaku, instantly noting the look in her eyes, elbowed Ginta.
"It's not what you're thinking!" He was quick to say. "He meant because of the war. Things are really rushed this days, and while some of the females help with the injured and with the den, there are some that go to fight, too. You wouldn't be able to rest properly there. Also, this den is much, much deeper in the mountain than the ones for the unmated, because normally mated couples also have their cubs with them, so unmated wolves can protect them if there's an attack or something"
Kagome nodded in understanding at his explanation. It made sense. Still…
"I still don't want to use a potential couple's den just because!" She explained. They both laughed quietly at this.
"There won't be any potential couples anytime soon, with the war going on and stuff. Newly mated couples are real unstable, no one won't risk it right now" Hakkaku said. "Plus, we have so many of this smaller dens, we're always building more of them"
"Yeah, don't worry, sis!" Ginta said with a warm smile, and it took him about to seconds to realize what he said. "I mean Kagome!"
Kagome smiled at him, half softened by the fact that the 'nickname' just came out of him so easily, and half saddened at how he was always correcting himself after using it.
Ginta noticed her smile, and couldn't help but smile a bit sadly as well.
"Old habits die hard, I guess" He said. Kagome only smiled wider.
"You don't have to stop calling me sister, you know" She said, pleading in her mind.
Both wolf demons shared a look, to then turn to her defeated.
"It's not really our choice" Hakkaku said, without needing to explain any further.
Kagome felt something pierce through her heart for the millionth time in the day. Part of her wanted to know everything Kouga has ordered his wolves to do or not to do in regards of her, but it'd only help in hurting her even more. So, she decided to change the subject instead.
She briefly wondered if she was wasting their time or not, but quickly chose to ignore that wonder. It's been three years and a hell of a day, a little catch up wouldn't hurt them that much, right?
"So" Kagome said. "There's a war going on… for three years"
"Yeah, demon wars usually don't last very long. We thought it would be over in a year or so but then the Western tribe decided to join in just when we were about to win, so…" Ginta said.
"It's it okay if I ask why is there a wolf demon war in the first place?" Kagome asked.
"Yeah, yeah. There's no problem. I mean, now that you will be staying here and stuff I don't see one at least" Hakkaku shrugged. "There's no 'a' reason, I guess. I mean, it definitely has to do with Kouga's ruling over the Eastern tribe, but there are several complaints you can say"
"Complaints?" Kagome asked a little bit perplexed. Sure, she never gave too much thought into Kouga's rule over his tribe, at least not into the details. But, she always thought he was an exceptional leader, even back when she first met him. It was just the way his people looked up to him. There was so much admiration and even devotion in his pack's eyes. Also the fact like he was so young (she didn't acknowledge this back then, but know she learned how to read demon's ages). To be such a young demon and have such numerous and not to mention devoted followers it surely meant something.
"Yeah, Kouga was getting too powerful in the eyes of certain wolf tribes" Ginta explained.
'Ah' that made much more sense.
"We grew so much in numbers in such a short amount of time once we defeated Naraku, they got scared. Even more so because in some other regions fertility is definitely not the same." Hakkaku added.
"Yeah, also the fact that Kouga started training us scared them. They wondered if it was because we wanted to overtake them, but it just was because Kouga suffered a lot when so many of our packmates got killed by Naraku, he just didn't want to go through the same thing ever again" Ginta said.
"And also the fact that he's so young, gaining all this power" Hakkaku added.
"Yeah, I suppose I'd be jealous too" Kagome said, earning a light chuckle from both of them. "You said that the Western tribe decided to join later… So, it was the Northern one that declared war first?"
They both seemed to get suspiciously nervous at that question.
Kagome eyed them carefully.
"Uh… yeah, they did" Ginta said, rubbing the back of his head rather nervously.
"Why, though? I mean, I guess they were worried about your growing power but why don't just settle for a treaty or something? Or make sure you weren't trying to overtake them before attacking?" Kagome pressed on. There was something going on here, but she just couldn't figure out what. She doubted Kouga was indeed trying to overtake every other tribe, and she also doubted he wasn't open for treaties or agreements.
"Well… we kinda uhm-" Hakkaku tried to say.
"Offended them?" Ginta supplied.
"Offended them?" Kagome parroted. "How so?"
"Well, uh… remember how I told you there were in fact several complaints about Kouga's Alpha position?" Ginta said and Kagome just nodded. "Well, it's very unheard of and unusual for an Alpha to be leading so many years without a uhm… mate"
Kagome blushed crimson at this. 'Oh, my god, please no'
It was already a big fucking deal that she rejected him and every single soul of his pack seemed to know and take offence at it, but the fact that a war (a freaking war!) might have happened because of it?!
She closed her eyes and tried to avoid hearing the inevitable truth.
"So, when he couldn't well…. Have you" Hakkaku said.
"The Northern Alpha offered his granddaughter to be Kouga's mate and the Eastern tribe's Alpha female, and Kouga obviously rejected her" Ginta continued explaining.
"Duh" Hakkaku said.
"So, of course, the rejection was taken as a great offence by the Northern tribe. I mean, it was the very best the North could offer, after all. She's gorgeous, and strong, not to mention the granddaughter of an Alpha" Ginta continued as he cited all these good qualities this girl had, making Kagome feel a sour taste in her mouth. "And she also wanted to be with Kouga…"
Kagome couldn't help but frown, and that only added to her surprise.
It's been so long since she has felt pure, raw jealousy… and a jealousy that was her own. Fiery, raged, hot.
She was caught up in the feeling for a moment… until she realized something.
"Wait a minute" She said. "Pretty, strong girl from the North who's grandfather is an Alpha" She cited, the truth dawning down on her. "You can't be talking about…" She trailed off.
"Ayame" Hakkaku finished for her.
It was as if she summoned the iciest water from far North to then wash over her like a bucket of cold water.
How?
It felt as if she just remembered something long forgotten.
She suddenly remembered the wolf demoness existence.
How could she ever have forgotten her?
She was honestly amazed.
All these years dealing with nothing but wolf demon ghosts and she forgotten a very important one… and while she was still surprised about that fact, her curiosity about something else quickly overtook her.
"Why did he reject her?" she asked, and the question seemed to boom throughout every single inch of the dens.
Both demons in front of her looked at her like she was just insane.
"I mean" Kagome quickly said, trying to explain herself better "After everything…" She continued, trusting they would understand what she meant without needing much explanation "Why not Ayame?" She truthfully wondered. "I mean, she's just like you said… Gorgeous, strong, perfect to lead by his side" She cited, feeling jealousy grow within her again. "Why not take her as a mate?"
"What do you mean why?" Ginta asked half chuckling, wondering if it was a legit question. "He can't"
"He can't because he doesn't like her…?" Kagome questioned again, not really getting what was so obvious about the question. "Or because he doesn't want a treaty with the North tribe-" Hakkaku interrupted her before she even had a chance to finish.
"No, because he literally can't" Hakkaku said looking at her rather startled.
"What do you mean he literally can't?" Kagome was starting to get a little irritated at them. They were looking at her like she was stupid or living after a rock till yesterday.
"Wolves can't mate with someone else other than their intended" Ginta finally said, as if it was so obvious "That's unless their intended mate dies"
Kagome was shook to her core.
She knew some of demon mating ways, and also some of demon law and stuff. Mostly because Sango taught her throughout this years and because not only she was a priestess, but a miko, so she had to know.
She never heard something like this, though… and considering the fact that her 'mate' was currently with another it just didn't make any sense.
"So, that means that…" Kagome trailed off in a whisper, still shook.
"Kouga can't mate anyone but you" Hakkaku said. "At least until you, you know… die"
"How come you didn't know this?" Ginta asked. "I mean, I know you're human and stuff… but you're mated to a hanyou, right?"
Kagome flinched at that, but didn't respond.
"Also you have that demon slayer friend… I'm sure she knows this stuff!" Hakkaku added.
"I- She did, but-" Kagome stuttered out. "I'm pretty sure it's not like that!" She said a little louder than intended, nearly shouting. They didn't seem to notice it, though.
"What do you mean?" Ginta asked.
"I know for a fact that demons can take another mate" She simply said, jaw tensed.
"Well, yeah, of course! Demons can, but wolves? Never!" Hakkaku said, again as if it was just obvious.
"Wolves mate for life!" Ginta added, and Kagome felt a shiver run all over her body, remembering one of the first things Kouga said to her when they met. When he claimed her his woman.
The warmth that spread inside her turned sour soon, when another thought crossed her mind.
"So, basically, Kouga's waiting for me to die to take another mate?" She said icily.
Both of them looked at her completely horrified.
"N-No! That's not it at all, sis!" Ginta exclaimed, too horrified to notice the slip up of the nickname.
"It's not like it's a death sentence or something! Or like he's being forced to love you or to be with you!" Hakkaku exclaimed as well.
"He wants you. Just you. He can't possibly want any other woman while you're around" Ginta continued, making Kagome blush.
"When a wolf finds their intended mate, they're all they see" Hakkaku added.
"I mean, they can be intimate with someone else if they're not mated yet. But, regarding romantic feelings and mating? It's just impossible." Ginta said.
"Whether Ayame is attractive or not or perfect for him, Kouga could just never mate her" Hakkaku said. "It's almost as if the sole idea of mating someone other than your intended is repulsive"
"That's why wolf demons, while territorial, are not really jealous around their own kind regarding their mates" Ginta said. "Once you're already mated or in courtship process, affairs and such are just unheard of. We might be possessive when they're other demons around but between our kind? Never"
"And normally, once you find your intended mate the courtship process instantly begins" Hakkaku added.
"Look, I don't wanna sound unsensitive or anythin' but… while Kouga might have sex with other females right now, it's pretty much out of male needs" Ginta said, looking half regretful about letting her know that. Kagome just looked at the ground at the revelation. "He could never even consider any romantic involvement with anyone else. The feeling you have towards your intended mate is just incomparable to anything else you could even imagine"
Kagome stayed silent for a few moments, and they just waited for her to digest everything they said as they turned on the rest of the candles in the room.
It was unbelievable, in part. She would have never guessed.
Kouga could just never love anyone else, or even consider anyone else while she was around.
It was probably why he also was so angry at her right now. Not only she rejected him, but she quite literally felt him tied handed. There was just no other choice for him, not second chances or 'more fish in the sea' as the modern saying says.
It must have been horribly tortuous for him… The thought of never being able to be with anyone else at least for several decades (she hoped).
Then, another thought crossed her mind, making her instantly frown in confusion.
"Wait" She said, making both wolf demons turn to her again. "You said wolf demons can only mate or have romantic feelings towards their intended mate" She started, and they both nodded for her to continue "So, is Ayame's intended dead or something? How come she loves Kouga when she's clearly not his intended" She couldn't help but say 'clearly' with a little more emphasis than the rest of the words.
"Well, not exactly" Hakkaku said "Ayame's intended is indeed alive. He's the one in charge of the Northern armies"
"And she still loves Kouga?" Kagome asked but neither of them replied, and that was the only answer she needed. "How?"
Ginta sighed as he rubbed the back of his head again, looking a bit frustrated and struggling with his thoughts.
"Well, Ayame's situation is a bit weird" Ginta started "We think she's just in denial… and we blame Kouga for this as well"
"What do you mean?" Kagome asked.
"Well, Ayame was just so young, even for a demon, when Kouga made that stupid promise to her" Ginta explained. "He told us he made that promise expecting for her not only to forget it, but to understand the wolf demon mating process once she grew up" He excused his Alpha "Of course, you probably already know that didn't happen…"
"We think it's because she basically grew thinking about that stupid promise" Hakkaku cleared out.
"We also think that once she actually gives in at least just a bit into her intended mate, she'll realize there's simply no way she and Kouga could ever be together" Ginta added. "She's so obviously trying to maintain her distance from her intended, because deep down she knows"
"In other words: she's being a spoiled brat" Hakkaku simply said and Kagome mentally grinned at this.
"Still" Ginta said "Another thing that's keeping Ayame so insistent in this is that Kouga's case is a little bit unusual as well"
"What does that mean?" Kagome asked him.
"Well, while is not completely unheard of that a wolf demon's intended is human. It happened before, but just a couple of times and probably millenniums ago. But, it's still pretty unusual" Ginta explained. "Not to mention that it's an Alpha we're talking about… and the youngest and strongest one ever heard of"
"Not only that but, the fact that he was uhm- rejected" Hakkaku added.
"Most of the northerns think that, given the circumstances of both, Kouga's and Ayame's situation, it could be possible for them to mate" Ginta finally finished.
"… I see" Kagome said, finally seeing the bigger picture, and finally understanding why the Northern tribe was so offended and why they declared war.
Kouga was, quite possibly, the best wolf demon Alpha to ever be. He was young, strong, smart and with crazy leadership skills. He had the biggest, strongest tribe, that would likely only grew in numbers and in strength in the future.
… And, he has a human for intended mate, that rejected him.
Then there was Ayame, apparently the only wolf demon to ever manage to resist from falling for her own intended mate. Ayame, who has been obsessed with Kouga since she was a little girl.
Finally, there was the fact that the potential mating between the two would benefit two large, important wolf tribes… And Kouga rejected all that.
He rejected the girl (quite honestly, probably the very best the North had to offer, as Ginta said), he rejected the power, he rejected peace.
Quite possibly just because of what Kagome did.
Both wolves noticed the change in her feelings and what this new knowledge was doing to her, but said nothing to soothe it. It was something she needed to know, sooner rather than later, and even more so now that she was staying here, where she would experience in the flesh the effects of the war.
They shared a look, another perk of being in a wolf demon pack, it almost was as if they could read eachother's mind.
It would probably be painful, and make her uncomfortable, but they needed to know.
"So, now that you know all of these, I hope you don't mind if we ask you something as well" Hakkaku started.
That hat seemed to have snap Kagome off her thoughts, as she blinked to then look at them, with a smile that didn't reach her eyes.
"Sure, what is it?"
They both shared a look again, and while they were nervous as fuck, there was no way they'd live another day with the curiosity.
"Why there's not a single trace of InuYasha on you?" Ginta finally asked.

Chapter Ten
Kagome let out a soft sigh as she exited the operating room. It had taken a while, but she had finally managed to get Ginta on the road to recovery. She had to use quite a bit of reiki to heal him, as it turned out to be the only way to get rid of whatever that purple stuff was. She and her team had managed to collect a sample of it and were taking it off to run some tests. Hopefully she’d have answers soon, but for now...
She ran a hand down her face, exhaustion hitting her hard. She was going to need to make a new pot of coffee... She walked down the hall to the waiting area and looked for Hakkaku and Kouga. It didn’t take her long to spot them, and she gave them a soft smile before waving them over. They were quick to get up and follow her. She led them into a room, one that was usually used to give... not so pleasant news.. but she knew it would be private, and privacy is what they needed right now.
She opened the door to the room and ushered the two youkai in, and once they were all inside, she closed the door and sat down in one of the chairs. Hakkaku and Kouga followed her motions wordlessly.
“Ginta is going to be alright.” They let out a breath of relief at that, and Kagome couldn’t help but smile warmly at them. “He’s going to need to be here for a couple days. I’m going to need to monitor him and how he’s doing. We also managed to collect a sample of that.. purple stuff, whatever it is. So, we’ll figure out what that is soon enough. Unless you know something?” she asked, leaning back in her chair with her arms crossed.
“We’re not really certain ourselves.” Kouga said. “We haven’t seen anything like this before, so we don’t know how to approach it. How did you get rid of it?”
“Reiki. That was the only way. It took a lot out of me, too... Whatever this is.. it’s bad.” Her brows furrowed in concern. “You guys need to be careful. I don’t know what all it is you’re involved in and who with... but this looks pretty serious. If he hadn’t been brought to me when he was, or at all, then Ginta would most definitely be dead. Whatever this is, it’s fast acting and seems to spread quickly.”
Both Kouga and Hakkaku grimaced at that. That was definitely the last thing they had wanted to hear.
“So.. if something like this were to happen again, we would need to come to you?”
“Yes, or at least to the nearest hospital. There has to be at least one miko on staff at all times in every hospital. I know you guys don’t like coming here, but you’re going to have to if this happens again. There’s only so much I can do out of my home.”
They both nodded. “Thank you, Kagome.” Kouga said, voice soft.
She smiled softly at him. “Of course. It’s my job to help and heal.” She stood up from her seat then, causing them both to look up at her. “I can take you to see him. He might still be asleep, but you all can be here overnight. Just two at a time though. If any others from the pack want to visit, you’re gonna have to take turns.” she said with a bit of a giggle.
Kouga stood up, Hakkaku quickly following suit. “Yes, please take us to him.”
She nodded, then opened the door and started walking. She took them down a corridor to an elevator. From there, they went up to the third floor and down several more corridors. It seemed like ages before she finally stopped in front of a door. She pointed out the room number to them before knocking and opening the door.
A nurse was standing inside, checking on Ginta’s IV. Ginta’s head turned to see who had come in and gave a weak smile.
Hakkaku immediately rushed to his bedside and the nurse couldn’t help but chuckle at the enthusiasm shared between the two. He looked over at Kagome and gave her and Kouga a warm smile before exiting the room. They moved closer to the bed then and Ginta turned to look up at them. He smiled up at them, a bit weak and tired.
“Boss.. Sis..”
“How ya feelin’?” Kouga asked.
“Tired.. but no pain.” He directed his gaze to Kagome then. “Thank you, sis. I owe you one.”
Kagome had to resist the urge to groan. What was with them just.. handing out life debts like this? “I’m just doing my job, Ginta.”
He chuckled at that. “I know, but we all know you would’ve done it anyway.”
She rolled her eyes at him, but she knew it was true. “You guys can’t just keep handing out life debts like this, though.”
Kouga placed a hand on her shoulder, drawing her attention. “It’s only because it’s you, Kagome.”
She blushed fiercely. It wasn’t fair of him to look at and speak to her so softly like that. She scoffed and brushed Kouga’s hand off her shoulder. “Whatever..” she mumbled, rolling her eyes. “Anyway.. I should probably get back to it and check on my other patients. I’ll be back in to check on you guys later.” She chewed on her cheek as she glanced over all of them, a seriousness settling in her gaze. “Be careful, okay?”
They could only nod in response.
She nodded as well and took another moment to look them over once again, her eyes lingering on each one of them in silent worry, before she turned and exited the room.
Kouga frowned, wishing she could stick around a bit longer. But, he knew that she was on the job, and Ginta wasn’t her only patient. Besides, it was now more important than ever for him to gather information so they could protect themselves and exact revenge. He wasn’t going to take this attack lightly. This had to have been planned, and he needed to find the puppet master.
He moved closer to Ginta’s bedside, and his beta smiled weakly and softly up at him. Kouga returned the smile with one of his own, though he couldn’t hide the pain and guilt from his eyes. He pressed his forehead to the top of Ginta’s head, closing his eyes as he did so. One of his hands came up and cradled the back of the beta’s head. It was an intimate position, one he didn’t do often, but he figured after all that Ginta had done for him, it was well needed and well deserved. “We’ll get them back for what they did to you, I promise.”
Kouga held the position for another couple beats before pulling away and ruffling Ginta’s short hair. He flashed both his betas a toothy grin, hoping to ease any lingering worries they had. “Rest up as much as you need, and don’t give Kagome any trouble. I’ll be back later with information.” And with that, Kouga turned on his heel and left the room.
-BG-
The basement was dark and damp, and had an unsettling chill that had a way of just seeping into your bones. Kouga couldn’t help but feel a slight thrill as he descended into it, having long associated these feelings with gaining something, whether it was information or a lead... He always found great success in the buried depths of the compound. He hoped today would be no different.
His wolf was pacing and howling with bloodlust, another small side effect of coming down here. It was one he could live with, of course. Once he reached the bottom of the steps, he reached for the light on the wall nearby.
The familiar hum and harsh brightness of fluorescents filled the room and only further fueled the alpha’s excitement. A huge grin spread across his face as he cracked his neck and then his knuckles. He walked further into the room, the sounds of his boots hitting the concrete bounced and echoed off the walls. He rolled his shoulders, as he approached the cell he was looking for.
The aura around the caged youkai wasn’t that strong, but it was stronger than the others they had faced off against last night, aside from the one that had nearly taken him and Ginta out. He had to fight back a snarl at the memory. His wolf craved more blood.
He stopped in front of the door and peered at the youkai through the bars. Her hair was long and straight, blonde in color. Her skin was pale, but littered with freckles and a couple of cuts and bruises, likely from the fight last night. She was huddled in the far corner of her cell, bright, pale green eyes glaring up at him. But she couldn’t hide her fear, not from her eyes, and especially not from her scent. He smirked wickedly at her.
Kouga pulled out a key from his pocket and unlocked the cell door. He then slowly opened it, the slow, horrible screeching of the door only adding to the atmosphere. He then pulled it closed quickly and locked the door behind him before slipping the key back into his pocket.
“I believe you have some answers for me, don’t you?” he asked, slowly starting to move towards her.
She bristled, her tail whipping about in anger and fear and she hissed at him.
He had to resist an eyeroll. Cats...
Kouga continued to stalk closer to her, and the closer he drew, the more she huddled into her corner and the louder her hissing and growling grew. He stopped just out of swiping range, his grin never faltering.
“Now.. I just have a simple question for you. It’s an easy one, I promise.” He paused, giving her a moment to calm down, at least somewhat. “Who sent you and your group last night?” he asked.
She pressed her lips into a tight, thin line, eyes shifting away from his and down towards the floor. His nose twitched at the unmistakable smell of fear: rotting flesh. It burned his nose, but he managed to resist the urge to scratch at it. He gave her another moment, and when she showed no sign of answering, he let out a sigh.
He ran a hand down his face before crouching down, getting down on her level. Her eyes darted back up to his, cautious of what he might do next. As she should be.
“We can do this one of two ways. Either you can tell me on your own, or I can force it out of you. The choice is yours.”
He waited patiently as she looked him over, her eyes roaming quick. She chewed on her lower lip for a moment, considering.
Then she lunged at him, claws extended and growling. Kouga was quick to block her attack, grabbing her easily by the wrist and then quickly pinned her to the ground. One hand held both of her wrists behind her back while the other held her by the back of the head, pressing her face into the concrete. He shifted his body above hers, making it so he could dig his knee into her back to keep the cat youkai pinned.
His skin buzzed with excitement as his wolf urged him to do a show of force. He’d give her one more chance.
He chuckled darkly above her. “You should’ve learned by now that fighting won’t get you anywhere.”
She hissed up at him, her eyes piercing into his. “Go to hell.” she snarled, her voice raspy.
“Ohhh, so you can speak, huh?” He dug her face further into the concrete, watching as her face scrunched up in pain. “That means you can answer my questions. Now, let’s try this again..” His grip on her wrists tightened, threatening to snap, and he could see the tears welling in her eyes. “Who sent you?” he asked, a menacing snarl in his voice.
She sucked in a breath through her teeth, eyes screwed shut. More fear filled her scent and her youki lashed out against him. Kouga growled and crushed her further into the concrete, nails digging into the skin at her scalp and drawing some blood. The youkai cried out in pain below him.
“I suggest you answer before you lose your head.”
The tears spilled out of her eyes, and she opened them to look up at him, pleading with him. He paid it no mind. He simply started to dig his nails into her wrists as well to serve as an incentive.
“AH! I.. I don’t know! Only.... Only Hiro knew and h-he’s dead! We were to just follow his lead!”
Kouga stewed on this for a moment, looking her over and searching her scent.
He bared his fangs at her and moved his hand from her head to her neck, closing his hand around it. She sobbed.
“Tell me the truth!” The tips of his claws dug into the soft, sensitive flesh of her neck and her fear only spiked. Her youki began to flare, but it was nothing compared to Kouga’s. He began to smother her aura with his own and more tears spilled down her cheeks.
“I.. I don’t know his name! I just know his presence, a-and his voice! I’ve never seen him myself.. Just heard our leader talking to him over the phone! His voice is deep, cloyingly sweet.. smooth like honey. He whispers sweet things, but they have no meaning. He offers money and protection, but.. but I don’t think we would have actually received any. He sent us there to die, I just know it!” she sobbed.
Kouga digested this information for a moment. There was no hint of lies in her scent anymore. She was telling him the truth. But there was just one last thing he needed to know...
He dug his nails further into her neck and she cried out in pain. “What do you know about the poison he used on us last night?”
“P-Poison?”
“Yes. It turned my packmate’s skin purple.”
Her skin paled, and the only scent he could smell now was her fear. It filled the entirety of the basement. It was so strong it stung his eyes and caused tears to well up.
“I don’t know.. but it’s bad. It kills... no cure...” she sobbed, thick globs of tears rolling down her cheeks. Kouga frowned, unable to help himself from sympathizing with her, at least somewhat.
And now.. he had no use for her. He knew that if he were to let her go, then whoever her boss was would have her killed, just like he assumed had happened to Hiro, the one he had almost gotten answers out of last night. But he couldn’t keep her here. He didn’t know what kind of powers their boss had. They might have a way of tracking her, or possessing her... weirder things had happened, and he knew he couldn't take any chances. He looked down at her, and she was already looking up at him, pleading.
Kouga held back his sigh. “Thank you for your cooperation. I assume you know what must come next, then?”
“Please.... just do it.”
He would at least make it quick and painless for her...
-BG-
Kagome spent a couple moments checking Ginta’s vitals, making sure everything was good. She smiled as she put her things away and had her stethoscope settled around her neck once again. “Well, looks like you’re all good to go! Though I fully expect you to stop by my place in a couple days to make sure you’re still doing alright.” she said.
Ginta chuckled a bit. “Yeah, of course, Sis.”
She nodded. It was still weird to her hearing them call her ‘sis’... she would have to ask Kouga about it later. “Good.” Her brows furrowed for a moment. “It’s just really concerning that it took you a full week to heal.. That stuff really did a number on your system..” she commented.
“So you still haven’t figured anything out about it?” Kouga asked. He had been leaning against the wall nearby, arms crossed over his chest.
“Unfortunately... This is something completely new to us, so a lot of our results have been inconclusive..”
“Is it some type of poison?”
“Can’t say.. If it was, we’d be able to make some kind of antiserum from it fairly easily, considering we can do that with venom and other things quite easily nowadays. But this..... I just don’t know... It’s... different somehow, but it has some of the same properties as a poison.” Kagome let out a sigh and waved a hand in front of her face before standing up from her chair. “Whatever it is, it’s unique and one of a kind... So it’s going to take a while for us to crack the code. Please be patient.. and be careful, okay?”
Kouga frowned, not liking how uneasy and fearful she looked. He pushed himself off the wall and moved to stand in front of her. “We’ll be as safe as we can. Now that we know there’s something like this out there in play, we’ll definitely be more cautious from here on out.” He brought a hand up to cup her cheek tenderly. “I promise..” His voice rumbled with his promise, reverberating in his chest, and it made her knees weak. He leaned in and they kissed briefly.
When they broke away from each other, she remembered where they were and looked away, her cheeks burning. She had completely forgotten that Ginta was in the room, how embarrassing!
Kouga simply chuckled. He wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her into his side and pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “We’ll see you later.” His hand lingered on her hip, rubbing a small, teasing circle there for a moment before pulling away. Kagome’s cheeks darkened and she shot a glare at Kouga, though there was no anger in it. He just laughed once again and set about helping Ginta. Kagome shook her head, rolling her eyes and heading out of the room.
As soon as Kagome was out of the room, Ginta looked up at Kouga with a smirk on his face. “She’ll make a great alpha.”
Kouga blushed for a moment before rolling his eyes and letting out a growl. “Don’t make me have you spend another week in here.”
Ginta simply laughed, knowing that Kouga didn’t actually mean it. Of course, he didn’t doubt the threat and wouldn’t push his luck, but he knew it would take more than that for Kouga to hurt him. But it was nice to see his ever so stern Alpha being such a lovesick pup. And he could tell that Kagome really cared for him. He was happy for them.
It took them a moment to get all signed out of the hospital, but once they stepped outside, Hakkaku was there, waiting with a car. He beamed at them and was quick to open the doors for them, which they thanked him for. Ginta rode shotgun, and Kouga was content sitting in the back.
Hakkaku filled Ginta in on the happenings within the pack he had missed so he’d be able to step right in once again and help out more effectively. “And now that you’re back, Kouga can tell all of us about what he got out of the youkai we had captured.” Hakkaku mentioned as he pulled into his parking space.
Ginta looked back at Kouga, looking to see if it was bad or good news, so he could be prepared. But like always, his alpha’s expression gave nothing away. They got out of the car quietly, but it didn’t stay quiet for long. Soon, the pack descended on them, welcoming Ginta home with tears in their eyes and plenty of hugs and cheek and forehead kisses. The entire pack was buzzing with excitement to have their companion back home, safe and sound. Ginta couldn’t help but tear up a bit at the outpouring of love.
Once everyone calmed down, which took quite a while, they all filed into one of the houses and took their seats. Kouga stood with his arms crossed as he waited for everyone to settle. Once they were all ready, he began to speak.
“As you all know, we managed to capture one of the youkai that attacked us last week. I wasn’t able to get much out of her, as she had her group seem to be low in the ranks, but I did get something.” He began to pace slowly, back and forth. “It seems that their boss doesn’t like many to know his identity. Most just know his voice and presence, they don’t even seem to know what he looks like except for a select chosen. According to the cat, his voice is deep, but had a sweetness to it. He also offers things, but this is likely to get them to do as he pleases. She felt that what he was sending them out for was a suicide mission, and that proved true, especially when that other youkai stepped in.”
He took a moment to let this information sink in. He could see a couple of his pack mates writing down notes, Hakkaku being one of them. “As for the poison, she said there's no cure. The only way we’ve found to counteract it so far, is by having a miko use her reiki. But from what Kagome told me, it takes a lot out of her, and uses a lot of energy to get rid of it. Whatever this is, it isn’t to be taken lightly. We’ll need to be careful from here on out until we hear the test results from Kagome. So.. be cautious from here on out. If you get attacked with this stuff, head to a hospital immediately. Understood?”
“Yes, Alpha!” they all repeated back.
He nodded once, and with that, they were all dismissed. Most of them lingered back to talk with Ginta, make sure he was doing okay and asking him questions about the poison. Kouga watched for a moment before walking over and growled a warning. They all shrunk back and then quickly left the immediate area. Ginta turned to look up at him, grateful.
“Go get rest. You deserve it.”
“Thanks Kouga..”
They smiled at each other for a moment and Kouga pulled him in for a quick hug. Once he pulled away, he gave the beta a pat on the shoulder and a wide grin. Ginta returned the smile with one of his own, then headed for bed. He would rest while he could.. he had a feeling things were only going to get more difficult from here on out.

if my heart was a house (you’d be home)
AO3 / fics
non-au
pairing(s): inukog (established), gintaku (established, mentioned)
words: 4k+
a/n: I FINALLY FIGURED OUT A TITLE thanks to @itsalwayssunnyinmypussy ! thank you for being an amazing beta as well!!  also thank you to @yukiothecollielover for being an amazing second beta too :’) okay!! so! the inukog is definitely more towards the end, but i really wanted to take the opportunity to attempt to flesh out the wolf tribe a little more and add in the headcanons i have for them (i might’ve uh, ignored canon a little...)!
Inuyasha rises, suddenly alert, when he detects a distinct scent in the air.
He'd know the smell of blood anywhere, and from how strong it is, there's a lot of it. What makes him rush to the entrance of the wolves’ den is the fact that it’s familiar, and dread begins to creep over him like an icy chill.
Kouga's blood.
Along with the scent, is the acrid tang of poison.
“Move it! We've got wounded!" Someone calls out from behind, and Inuyasha sees the arrival of the scouting group that had been sent out earlier in the evening. Curious about the sudden commotion, most of the tribe gathers at the den’s entrance. Once they realize the severity of the situation, some rush out to help bring the injured in and prepare the necessary accommodations. He had a feeling they were taking too long, he should've known something had gone wrong, should've gone out after them— “Someone get Chizue!” A member of the scouting group shouts.
Multiple limp wolf demons are carried in, some have their eyes shut tightly, while others are wide eyed, their abnormally dilated pupils a clear sign of shock. The stench of the poison almost overwhelms Inuyasha, and he covers his nose with the sleeve of the fire rat robe. His heart sinks when he sees Ginta frantically hauling Hakkaku in, but when he sees Kouga being carried in, blood all over him and staining the furs he wears around his waist with a red so dark that they look like they’ve been dipped in ink, it feels like he can’t breathe.
There’s a tiny bit of relief when he sees Kouga’s chest rise and fall, indicating that he’s still breathing, still alive. Inuyasha’s so distracted by the sight of him as some of the other wolves help Kouga, that he barely registers several sets of footsteps rapidly approaching from inside the den.
Chizue, accompanied by a pair of younger wolf demons whose names Inuyasha can’t recall at the moment, makes it to the main clearing.
“How many?" Is the first question she asks, her calm demeanor denoting centuries of experience in situations like these. She scents the air and he knows she's also taken note of the poison when her eyes narrow.
Ginta, returning from assisting Hakkaku, responds, "About five injured, three of the five were bit. Chief was one of 'em."
“I see. Has it been slain?” Inuyasha knows the healer is referring to the large serpent demon that had been lurking around the mountains for a while now. Numerous hunting groups had been sent out specifically to locate it and drive it out. However, the scouting patrol that’s arriving now had been sent out merely to take a look around the territory’s borders for any other trespassers.
“Yeah, it's dead," He says. "Kouga managed to finish it off before he collapsed."
Of course he did. Knowing Kouga, he'd most likely flung himself at the giant beast to protect the others without sparing a thought for his own well being. Inuyasha wants to be more angry at Kouga for putting himself at risk like that, he really does, but instead he feels his chest grow warm with something resembling pride. Kouga’s fierce devotion and loyalty to his tribe has always been admirable.
Chizue turns to the two young demons beside her, “Akane, Genki, go and help them get settled and treat those who are doing the most poorly. Do you two remember what I use for venom?” At their nod, she ushers them towards the healer’s chamber, a decently sized crack in the rock wall that opens up into a small cavern, hidden by hanging tendrils of lichen. “Good, now go.”
“It…” Ginta frowns, looking off to where Kouga was taken. “It bit two others, but it let ‘em go right away. When it bit Chief… it held on and started to wrap itself around him. Even after Kouga killed it, it took us a while to pry it off and free him,” There’s a brief, somber pause in which they both dwell on other possible, darker outcomes and what ifs, and Inuyasha decides that he doesn’t want to be present for any of the speculation.
“I’ll go check on him,” He mutters, not bothering to check if Ginta or Chizue hear him. Inuyasha quickly scales the rock walls leading up to the leader’s chamber, and not even the typically soothing sounds of the waterfall can quell the anxiety that seems to only grow stronger as he nears his destination.
When he arrives, Kouga is stretched out on his back and lying on a pile of furs, barely conscious.
The wolf demon’s hands are almost completely covered in blood; a sign that he’d most likely tried to stave off the bleeding immediately. The scent of venom is stronger now that he’s closer to Kouga, almost dizzying in its potency, and Inuyasha’s nose wrinkles as he approaches and sits beside him.
He removes Kouga’s headband, pushes his fringe back and is immediately startled at how hot his forehead feels.
He can see a bit of the wound from where the serpent’s fangs seem to have bitten through the armor. Just from the little he’s able to see, he can tell that the poison has drastically hindered the healing process; he can even see the venom slowly eating away at the flesh near the wound. If the serpent demon hadn’t been venomous, the bite wound would’ve already been on it’s way to fully healing by now, even without Chizue’s medicinal herbs speeding it up.
Inuyasha removes the fur pauldrons first before taking off the chest armor, careful not to move Kouga around too much— despite his impatience pushing him to take the damn thing off already— and finally manages to take a look at the wound in full.
There are two large puncture wounds in Kouga’s torso, the skin around them swollen and an angry red. Underneath the smell of poison is the sour scent of decay. There’s no telling how deep the wounds are, or what the true extent of the damage is based on what’s on the surface. He has to wait for Chizue to come and take a look. For now, there’s nothing he can do.
Inuyasha hates this feeling. The feeling of uselessness that hits him as he watches Kouga’s chest slowly rise and fall accompanied by his labored breathing.
“If the venom had been more potent, it’d be looking much worse than it does now.”
Startled, he looks up and meets the gaze of the healer of the wolf tribe. Chizue makes her way over to where they are and kneels by Kouga’s other side, putting a hand on his forehead. She remains silent for a few moments, eyes darting to Kouga’s exposed wound. Inuyasha waits for her to say something, anything about Kouga’s condition, but she doesn’t say a word. Just when Inuyasha feels his patience wearing thin, she stands up.
“Come, Inuyasha,” She says, beckoning for him to get up. “I have something prepared for him.” Inuyasha hesitates, but Chizue shakes her head. “It will do you no good to simply sit here and do nothing. It will not help you, nor will it help him,” Her eyes soften. “He’ll be just fine. Come.”
Her last words make the last shreds of hesitance fade away. He gets up and follows her wordlessly, sparing Kouga one last glance before he leaves.
“Shouldn’t you be helping them first?” Inuyasha raises a brow as he takes a look at some of the others that had been on the scouting patrol. They’re all lying on piles of animal furs, most unconscious.
Chizue sighs. “Some are indeed worse off, but traditionally the tribe leader almost always receives priority when it comes to injuries or wounds of this magnitude.” He doesn’t miss the concern in her gaze as she eyes one of the younger wolf demons that had been bitten.
Inuyasha frowns. As much as he wants for her to check on Kouga first, it’s not what Kouga would want. Screw tradition, he’d say. Inuyasha almost smiles at the thought.
“C'mon, you know that dumb wolf won't let ya near him until you've treated everyone else," Inuyasha sighs. He can already picture Kouga's stubborn resistance at Chizue helping him first. "He’ll throw a stupid tantrum like a big baby and waste your time. I'll help him. Just show me what to do."
Chizue smiles at him, equal parts amused and grateful.
“Young Kouga has always been rather headstrong, oftentimes to a fault, just like his mother, our last Chief,” The elder wolf demoness laughs and shakes her head fondly. "The wound has probably already healed a bit, but the venom is impairing the healing process, so we must do something about that first," She says, looking through the carefully organized stockpile of various natural herbs, salves, poultices and medicinal remedies stored in small nooks in the cracks running along the rock walls.
Though he’d never say it aloud, Inuyasha’s always been fascinated by how Chizue can remember where specific herbs grow and which remedies help certain ailments. She’s told him that she knows cures for even the most obscure of sicknesses, and she always asks the ancestors of the wolf tribe for their blessings after treating a patient.
“If not for our ancestors, especially the many, many other tribe healers before me, we wouldn’t have all this valuable knowledge,” He remembers her telling him one day as she organized her stockpile, taking note of what she was running low on, “Our tribe’s been through difficult trials, but because of the determination of our ancestors, we persevere, thrive, and prosper, even stronger and more united than before. So, I always make sure to give them my gratitude and show them that they’re not forgotten.”
Once Chizue gathers what she needs, she kneels next to Hakkaku, and begins to carefully remove his armor to gain better access to his wounds. Inuyasha settles himself next to her, watching as Hakkaku winces when Chizue applies the medicine.
Inuyasha studies her movements carefully, trying to give her his undivided attention, though his mind occasionally drifts to Kouga. Instinctively, his hand moves to clutch the handle of Tessaiga as he recalls Kouga's groans of pain as he was hurriedly carried into the caves, and the brief glimpse Inuyasha had caught of the wound when he went to see him. He knows that if they hadn't told him that Kouga managed to slay the intruder, he would've immediately gone and sought to kill the wretched creature himself.
He’s brought out of his thoughts by the sound of Chizue grinding dried herbs with a stone and watches as she sprinkles them evenly on top of the salve she’d already applied, before bandaging it all up with scraps of cloth. Hakkaku lets out a low whimper as she finishes. Inuyasha can feel Ginta’s presence nearby. He wouldn’t be surprised if Ginta was hovering right by the entrance, worried sick for his mate.
“This should help get extract most of the venom," Chizue hands him a small clay bowl containing a poultice and a few dried herbs wrapped in a thin cloth. “Along with some lavender and echinacea to help soothe the swelling. After the venom is gone, his body will heal on its own. I’ll be sure to pray for him once I’m finished with the others.” Inuyasha doesn’t even realize he’s frowning worriedly until he feels Chizue place a warm, comforting hand on his shoulder. Briefly, as he looks into the elder demoness’ eyes, he finds himself reminded of Kaede. “He’ll be fine, Inuyasha. Kouga’s always been resilient, but you being beside him will give him even more strength to endure this.”
Thanking her with a grunt, he takes both the herbs and salve from her, idly glancing around the room to the rest of the wounded demons that were part of the scouting group.
“You’ve been good for him, you know," She says just as he’s getting up to leave. Surprised, he pauses, turning to look at her. "Kouga's always been rather high-spirited, but in all the time I've watched him grow up, I can’t think of a time that I've seen him as happy as he is now. I believe it all started when he began to visit you and those friends of yours," She smiles kindly. “The sudden passing of both his mother and father was devastating for both him and the entire tribe, but despite all that, he’s grown up to become a great Chief. Now though, it’s like he’s back to how he was when his parents were with us. If his mother was alive to see him now, she would be very proud.”
Inuyasha knows that Chizue and Kouga are close, but to know that someone else in the tribe besides Ginta and Hakkaku had known about Kouga’s feelings— he averts his gaze, trying to decide if he should feel embarrassed or touched at the revelation.
“I think it’d be best if this remains between us,” Chizue winks at him conspiratorially, before she kneels down to begin tending to the young wolf demon she’d been worried about earlier. "Go on then. I know you’re very anxious to go to him. Don't let me keep you." She gestures for one of the apprentices, Akane, to sit beside her, and immediately gets to work.
He tries to come up with a response to all of that— what can he say?— but he's always had trouble with words, has always found it easier to communicate through his actions. He places a hand on her shoulder and when she looks up at him, he meets her gaze and hopes that he's able to convey how much everything she’s told him means to him.
“If ya need any help, don't be afraid to call for me, alright?” Inuyasha says over his shoulder, walking through the curtain of lichen and leaving the healer’s cavern.
When he returns to the leader’s chamber, Kouga's up.
He’s already looking toward the entrance when Inuyasha comes in, and grins weakly when the half demon sits beside him.
“How’s everyone else?” He rasps, forgoing a greeting.
“Fine, I think. Chizue’s lookin’ at the others who were bit first. Other than that, nothin’ fatal.”
“Good,” Kouga sighs, relieved. Inuyasha smacks him on the side of his head, prompting a hiss. He holds back quite a bit though; the mangy wolf is already going through enough. “Ow! The hell was that for!?”
“For bein’ dumb and not seeing her as soon as possible, that’s what!”
“I was unconscious! How the hell did you expect me to go see her!?”
“You were awake when I came back, you could’ve called for someone,” He interrupts before Kouga can reply, feeling his earlier concern manifest into frustration. “...and even if you were conscious before that, you would’ve been fightin’ to be seen last,” When no denial came from the injured demon, Inuyasha scoffs. “That’s what I thought.”
“Chizue's already busy enough with everyone else. Even if I was awake, I wasn't gonna bother her when she already has a lot to do," Kouga growls.
“That poison could’ve done a lotta damage,” Inuyasha knows he’s right, and even if the stubborn wolf demon won’t admit it, Kouga knows he’s right too. Kouga opens his mouth to say something, then seems to decide against it and promptly closes it, choosing to settle on an annoyed grunt instead. Abruptly, he lets out a sharp hiss, eyes screwed shut.
“You better not die on me," Though Inuyasha’s tone is sharp, he gently nudges Kouga to get better access to his wound. "If you die under my watch I’ll be the one they’ll blame.”
Kouga laughs and shakes his head. "You're crazy if you think that pitiful excuse for a demon could finish me off.”
“It almost did,” Inuyasha mutters, trying to ignore the worry that’s still gnawing at him. “Now shut up so I can focus.”
“Well, it didn’t,” The wolf demon retorts, then winces when Inuyasha starts to apply some of the salve. “Ow! Careful with that!”
Inuyasha rolls his eyes. “What, can’t take a little sting, Kouga? Hmph, you’re wimpier than I thought. Now shut up and hold still already.”
“Not my fault you’re puttin’ that stuff on me like a damn brute!”
“Any more comin’ from you and I'll leave ya to do it yourself!" The half demon snarls, though he does try to be more careful.
Inuyasha's brows are furrowed in concentration as he attempts to copy what the wolf tribe healer had shown him. Compared to her meticulous and skilled application, his own is hesitant and clumsy, but he’s determined. He recalls little bits and pieces he’d learned from when his mother and Kagome would patch him up in the past. In the end, it isn't perfect, but it looks close enough to what Chizue did to leave him satisfied.
He frowns, unsure. Then he decides that he'll get her to check on it later, just in case.
“You done?” Kouga asks, and when Inuyasha nods, he attempts to sit up, but fails to hold back a pained groan. Inuyasha puts both hands on Kouga's shoulders and makes him lie back down with a growl.
“Will ya stop moving, you idiot!? I didn't do all that work so you could go do something stupid and hurt yourself again!”
“Who’re you callin’ an idiot, idiot?”
Inuyasha lets out an exasperated sigh. "You're so damn stubborn."
Kouga scoffs. "Oh, really? That's rich, comin' from you. You're the definition of stubborn."
“Shut up and get some damn rest. Ginta’s fine and Chizue’s already taking care of Hakkaku and the others. They’re okay, now you need to stop bein’ stupid and annoying and take care of yourself,” Kouga lays back down after a moment, and Inuyasha shuts his eyes, though he remains alert in case Kouga decides to try and get up again. “Sleep.”
There’s a moment of silence, in which Inuyasha thinks that Kouga actually listened to him, and then after a sigh—
“You’re the worst medic ever. At least I have somethin’ nice to look at while you’re treatin’ me,” It’s said in a low mutter so Inuyasha’s sure that Kouga hadn’t meant for him to hear it, but that doesn’t stop his face from involuntarily heating up with a blush.
He hears Kouga laugh, and immediately realizes that Kouga had definitely wanted him to hear that after all.
Inuyasha’s not too sure how much time passes while he’s sitting with Kouga, but judging from the lack of sound coming from the rest of the den, he figures that the tribe had decided to turn in early for the night as a result of what happened to the scouting patrol. He finds the rare silence unsettling.
“You don't have to stay up, y'know."
Inuyasha opens his eyes to look at Kouga, who's staring right back.
“Tch, I'm not staying up for you, fleabag,” He retorts, though he knows he's trying to convince himself as much as he's trying to convince the wolf demon. "I'm just not tired. Go back to sleep so I can have some peace and quiet again." Of course, Inuyasha doesn’t really want Kouga to go back to sleep. He’s pretty sure Kouga knows this, too.
Kouga smirks, mischievous and teasing. "I didn't say anything about you stayin' up for me," He shuts his eyes. "But it’s good to know that you’re worried ‘bout me.”
Inuyasha averts his gaze. “...’course I’m worried.”
“Oh, are you?”
“If you die, who else is gonna keep the rest of the pack from chasin’ me outta here?”
“Ah, there he is. I was just about t’ask who you were and where the real Inuyasha was,” Kouga grins. “—and c’mon, the tribe is warming up to you, Chizue, Ginta and Hakkaku already really like you. Not to the mention the younger wolves,” He chuckles, though it’s more of a light wheezing sound. “Didn’t know you had such a way with kids.”
“Ginta and Hakkaku don’t count. They’d light their asses on fire if ya told ‘em to,” Kouga laughs and Inuyasha can’t help but chuckle. “—and those brats… no matter what I do and what I tell ‘em, they won’t stop followin’ me around.”
“They like your stories, I think.”
He likes telling them stories too, and though he’s never admitted it— and doesn’t think he will anytime soon— he’s pretty sure Kouga knows.
For the hundredth time, he realizes that there are lots of things Kouga just knows about Inuyasha. Things about him as well as things important to him that Kouga’s paid attention to and kept in his mind because he thinks they’re significant enough to remember.
Also for the hundredth time, this realization makes his heart pound faster in an almost dizzying blend of awe and happiness that he masks with a grunt.
“Chizue… the old hag’s fine, I guess. Anyone that can keep you in line is more than okay in my book.”
“That she does,” Kouga says, and Inuyasha can hear the affection in his voice as he talks about her. “Don’t let her hear you call her a hag, though. Old woman is scarier than anything when she’s mad. She may be a healer, but she can become deadly in the blink of an eye.”
Inuyasha knows. He hasn’t been on the receiving end of Chizue’s wrath, but he’s witnessed it enough to know that he never wants to be.
“Anyway, give it some time or whatever, they’ll get used to ya. If they don’t, then they’ll just have to get over it. Anyone tries to chase you out, they’ll have to get through me first.”
He doesn’t even try to hide the smile on his face that forms as a result of that statement.
“Oh, yeah?”
“Yeah, and they’d have to get through Ginta and Hakkaku and Chizue too,” Kouga says, eyes bright with mirth. “—and no one wants to do that.” Inuyasha chuckles, almost missing the way Kouga’s eyes soften. “So they’re just gonna have to deal if they don’t want an angry tribe healer on their hands.”
“Yeah, ‘cause out of all you, Chizue’s the only real threat.” Kouga laughs and gives Inuyasha a playful nudge.
There’s a comfortable silence, and Inuyasha closes his eyes, focusing on the comforting sounds of the waterfall. After a while, thinking Kouga’s fallen asleep, he opens his eyes to make sure, only to see Kouga looking straight at him, a dopey grin on his face. He mutters a curse when he feels his face flush at the attention.
Then, a vivid image of what Kouga had looked like when they’d first brought him in, bloody and barely breathing, flashes in his mind and he knows he won’t be able to keep himself from not bringing it up tonight.
“Kouga, don't be so damn reckless next time. You’re the leader and all that, I get it, but ya can’t just do that,” There’s a fear inside him that’s almost suffocating. “You can’t just— you—” He takes a shaky breath, trying to remain composed.
“Hey.”
Inuyasha blinks and looks into warm blue eyes at Kouga’s voice, then at the hand on his knee.
“Look, I’m okay,” Kouga murmurs, a hint of fondness in his tone. “I’m all patched up and I’m already feelin’ better. Go to sleep, Inuyasha.” He pats the space next to him, closing his eyes. There’s a beat of silence, and then, “Seriously though, your creepy staring is starting to freak me the hell out. Won’t be able to get a wink of sleep with you lookin’ at me like that.”
“I wasn’t starin’,” Inuyasha protests half-heartedly, already feeling himself become calmer. The warmth of Kouga’s hand is an anchor, and he lets himself be grounded. He lays down on the pile of furs, and settles close to Kouga, mindful of his wound. “Next time, I'm going with you so you don't get yourself into trouble. Figures you can’t do anything without me—“
“Sleep,” Koga mumbles. .
“‘M not tired,” Inuyasha says, then he yawns, and he doesn’t have to look at Kouga to know that he’s smirking. “Jerk.”
Inuyasha falls asleep a little while later, lulled by the sound of Kouga’s steady snores and his familiar scent, and for the hundredth time, it feels like he’s coming home.

5(inukag) and 32(kogakag)..... 😁😁😁😁😁
@oitreedeb That is one hell of a pick.
@n0vic3-4nastasia Bless you for giving me an excuse to write more inucest. I’ve never written A/B/O dynamic before but I’ll give it a shot.
What @oitreedeb and @n0vic3-4nastasia chose kind of go together and novice- asked for #1 with inucest so I decided to combine all of them in a sort of short ficlet.
@oitreedeb - *grumbles* making me write Kou/Kag. Finnee.
Here goes:
5. bad sex/sex fails (Inu/Kag), 32. Forbidden love (Kou/Kag), 1. A/B/O (inucest)
_________________________________________________________________
“Mmf! Inuyasha! What the hell are you-”
Inuyasha hastily let go.
“I’m sorry,” he mumbled, “Are you ok?”
Kagome huffed, blowing a stray strand of hair out of her face. “My god, Inuyasha, don’t you have like the vaguest clue – you know, how stuff… works?”
“I do,” Inuyasha protested. “Here, let me just-”
“No, no that’s ok,” Kagome said quickly. “Don’t worry about it. I mean clearly, you don’t want to.”
“I do want to,” Inuyasha tried again. “Of course I do, otherwise why would I be here in your bed-”
“You tell me,” Kagome retorted. “Why are you here? Because obviously, some parts of you don’t want to be.”
Inuyasha turned red then, and sat back, scooting away from her supine body.
Kagome raised herself onto her elbows, her shirt falling open carelessly where he’d clumsily unbuttoned the top few buttons, revealing her lacy bra barely covering her shapely breasts. Kagome noticed he didn’t even look at them once. In a corner of her mind, she wondered if he would have noticed if Kikyou had been lying here in her place.
“Because… I want to be with you,” Inuyasha replied, not meeting her eyes. “And – now it’s clear that – that I can’t.”
“Inuyasha,” Kagome said, voice becoming a little high pitched, a sinking feeling settling into her stomach. “What do you mean you can’t? If it’s a problem of – you know, performance, it happens to all guys sometimes…”
Inuyasha laughed hollowly. “No, no that’s not the problem. I – Kagome, I can’t because… because I’m an omega.”
“A- what?”
Inuyasha sighed, colour still dusting his cheeks. “It’s bad enough I’m a hanyou, and a bastard, but looks like that wasn’t enough for the universe because it decided to shit on me some more by also making me a – an omega-“
He glanced at Kagome; she still looked completely clueless. He swallowed hard. Damn, this wasn’t something he wanted to be explaining to the girl he had planned to spend the rest of her life with.
“An omega is a youkai that’s – that’s destined to be claimed by an alpha,” Inuyasha explained softly.
“Claimed?” Kagome repeated dumbly. “What is this, some feudal Japan thing? Because I’ll tell you, just because hanyou aren’t socially accepted doesn’t mean you have to-”
“This isn’t a society thing, Kagome,” Inuyasha interrupted, irrationally irritated by her defending him. “It’s my body. It’s – just the way it works. There’s not much I or anybody else can do about it.”
“You’re telling me the course of all youkai lives are predetermined from birth?” Kagome asked disbelievingly.
“No, not all,” Inuyasha said. “In fact, most youkai aren’t any of those things. They can choose who they want to be with, and who they become– ” bitterness laced Inuyasha’s voice. “But it’s not all bad for all the youkai who are born a certain way. Alphas have it made; it raises the honour of a family to have an alpha born in it. My father was one. And  –”
Inuyasha paused and with a short breath, changed the subject. “Anyway, omegas are just the opposite.”
“Ok,” Kagome said.  “So maybe if I-”
“Kagome,” Inuyasha said harshly. “You’re human. There’s nothing you can do.”
Kagome flinched, suddenly uncomfortably with the flinty look in his eyes.
“So what does that mean for you and me?” she asked softly, straightening up and beginning to button up her shirt.
Inuyasha swallowed around the sudden lump in his throat. “I –“
He lowered his head and let his bangs cover his eyes. “I can’t be with you…”
She’d been expecting the words, but they still felt like a stab to her heart. They were, after all, dashing away hopes she had been holding on to for so long.
“How long have you known?” Kagome asked, averting her eyes from his. “That you’re – you know-”
“…since I was a kid,” Inuyasha said. There was a moment of silence but Inuyasha didn’t elaborate. Kagome knew he was holding something back, but right now, the details weren’t seeming all that important.
“Why didn’t you tell me before?” she whispered. “All this time… you strung me along..”
A muscle twitching on his mouth was the only indication of Inuyasha’s pain. “There – there are no omegas or anything among humans, and I’m hanyou so I thought maybe… if I tried really hard I could-”
Kagome felt some of her anger melt away at the heartbreak in his voice.
“I never wanted to hurt you,” he whispered. “I really – I really wanted to be with you…”
Kagome made a soft despairing sound, and Inuyasha sprang to his feet; in a trice, he was at her window.
Kagome sat there dumbly on her bed. A part of her wanted to go after him, wanted to stop him from leaving like this, but she found she couldn’t move. Her body suddenly felt so heavy and she was so tired-
She knew he would have scented the tears that were gathering in her eyes. He didn’t turn around.
Kagome sat there on her childhood bed where he’d left her and finally let the tears escape.
____________________________________________________________________
Kagome debated never again returning to the feudal era. She had almost decided never to jump down that well again, when it occurred to her – her life there hadn’t been all about Inuyasha. She had friends there, friends who would be hurt if she just vanished from their lives without saying goodbye.
So she went. One more time.
She hadn’t anticipated how quickly her friends would be able to read her desolation on her face. It took them no time to notice how upset she was, and how standoffish and ruder than usual Inuyasha was and they put two and two together – they were broken up, for good.
Then there was all the consoling and the kind words, and Kagome had never before known those things could make one feel like bashing one’s head against a wall.
So she fled.
Away from Sango and Miroku and Shippou and Kaede, away from anyone who wished her well.
She didn’t know where she had ended up when she stopped at last, winded, and dropped to the grassy floor.
She didn’t cry; that’s all she had done for so long, after all. Inuyasha entered her thoughts unbidden, and she felt the tears gathering like dark clouds in her chest, but she didn’t allow them to her eyes.
Instead, she concentrated on breathing, one hand clenching in the dirt beneath her fingers. She watched a drop of sweat slide off her forehead and mix into that dirt. It vaguely occurred to her that Kikyou probably never got all gross and sweaty like this.
“Kagome.”
The sound of her name, here, in this time, out in the middle of nowhere startled her.
She looked up and her heart leapt into her chest.
“Kouga,” she said, and was surprised to find her voice raspy and small.
Alien blue eyes clouded over with concern and Kouga knelt down next to her.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
Kagome looked down at her hands, and could not answer.
The wolf leader didn’t press her; instead, he came to sit cross-legged next to her on the ground.
“So what are we staring at?” he finally asked, turning to look at her after a while when the silence got oppressive.
“Are you alpha omega whatever too?” Kagome asked, without preamble.
Kouga drew back in surprise at the question. Out of the corner of her eye, Kagome saw his reaction. She knew she was being rude, but didn’t care right now. She sort of hoped she had offended the wolf, and he would leave her alone in peace. She sort of also hoped he would stay here with her and drive away some of her loneliness.
“I’m a beta,” Kouga answered, to Kagome’s surprise.
She huffed a laugh, resolutely refusing to meet his eyes. “So you can’t be with humans either, then,” she muttered.
“Why do you care?” Kouga began teasingly, but stopped when he saw she wasn’t taking the bait.
“It means I can be with alphas and omegas. I can be with whoever I want to be,” Kouga explained. “Except an omega that’s been claimed by an alpha.”
“But no humans,” Kagome added snidely.
“Humans too,” Kouga said quietly.
Kagome’s head snapped towards him. “Really?”
“Yes,” Kouga said. “Why, what’s brought this whole – mmph!”
He had to brace a hand on the ground behind him when Kagome kissed him suddenly.
Blue eyes were wide as saucers when she drew back. “Kagome-” he whispered, fingers brushing disbelievingly over his own lips.
Kagome said nothing; she just looked at him.
After a moment, Kouga leaned down and took her in his arms, lowering his head to meet their lips once more.
Kagome’s hand clutched at the fur-lined armour on the wolf’s chest, and it occurred to her that this was wrong.
Terribly, awfully wrong.
She had only just broken up with the boy who she’s planned to spend the rest of her life with. And she wasn’t the girl who did this kind of thing. She didn’t jump from one boy to the next.
She should be mourning the end of her relationship with dignity and then, only after a large number of months had passed, should she even begin to think about being in another relationship.
Kouga’s tongue entered her mouth, gently but surely, and Kagome decided she absolutely did do this kind of thing.

A/N: That was the first ‘chapter’. @n0vic3-4nastasia - the inucest will be in the next instalment.

This will also be up on FF and AO3 soon.
