Saturday night mystery wine.... Los Enoloz Reserva 2015 Tempranillo One of the most challenging aspects of the WSET course is getting used to blind tastings. Completely blind tasting is not something I’ve had a lot of experience with. Even in class, we have some idea of the grape variety we’re studying that week. The only way to become experienced is to drink! So my lovely husband arranged a blind tasting for me tonight. My thoughts: Sweet black fruit (think plum and blackberry jam), liquorice and vanilla on the nose. Medium acid and tannin, offset by those delicious black fruit flavours, liquorice and subtle sweet vanilla. Medium length, and thoroughly delicious. The official wrap sheet on this wine: “This Tempranillo comes from a 90 years old Vineyard nested among the slopes of the Duero river Valley. After a smooth fermentation the wine was basket pressed into 100% french oak where it has undergone malolactic fermentation and stay there for 14 months. A solid and dark Ruby color with aromas of blackberries, chocolate and a touch of liquorice. In the mouth is concentrated and potent, deep berry flavours faultless and smooth. Shows outstanding structure and power and should age well until 2025. Only 150 cases were made of this very special wine.” (www.bestofspain.com.au) So, I don’t think I did too bad on picking out some of the aromas and flavours, but I didn’t pick this as a Tempranillo, nor Spanish. But I did thoroughly enjoy it, and would love to drink it again.

Oviedo - The Heart of Asturias

The thing about Oviedo is that it feels glamorous, almost as if everything is glittering. The streets are pristine and in spring the lush green leaves of the trees and bright floral blooms decorate the streets and parks with delicate life. At golden hour the gold mixes with pink hues to make this majestic city look even more like something out of a fairy tale:

Asturian cuisine is flavorful and satisfying, especially if you enjoy seafood. The Fabada Asturiana is one of my new favorite dishes - its a white bean stew made with a pork and tomato broth and usually a bit of sausage. The garlic grilled scallops are even better than they look:

As with every city in Spain, the architecture is endlessly charming here. Sweet little balconies and window boxes, multi-colored buildings with gilded flourishes, and always some ancient tower popping into view:

At #29 of our 30 cities, Oviedo is nothing but delightful! I hope to return to Asturias one day and explore more of the small towns in the gorgeous countryside here.
