So WeLoveFine just uploaded some new wallet designs (and holy shit do I want to own at least half of them why must they be so expensive in stupid American Extra Dollars this is bullshit your country is going down the toilet but your dollar’s still 25% higher then mine what the hell America?) but I was especially taken by a design by @wielderofthepen​ - great colours, great design on the alpha and betas, and... and... and... ... and there’s Roxy with a martini glass. Again. Guys, this isn’t okay. Depicting the character who had to fight to get sober and openly acknowledges her own problems as an alcoholic - especially the way the fan community so often depicts her at fun-loving and BestCharacterEver best - with a drink in her hand? With a drink as her symbol? Everyone else on the print has got their weapons except John, who’s just waving to the audience like the giant dork he is - everyone else gets to look strong. Roxy has to tote around the physical embodiment of her crushing addiction problem ha ha ha weeeeeeeee. This is not to single out @wielderofthepen​ - theirs is just the latest in a  long, long line of people who’ve done the same thing (and hell, until I saw that martini glass I was seconds away from having to talk myself out of buying, hand-to-god.) If Roxy had been a heroin addict, this fairly consistently social-conscious fandom wouldn’t be sticking a needle in her hand, but alcohol is socially acceptable, those most damaged by its use considered outliers rather than end-points. In other words, the teen with the martini glass is played more for comedy than tragedy, played for coolness rather than horror. And it’s so not okay. One of the most brutal moments in Homestuck is Roxy realizing she fell off the wagon and  her terror about what her friends, especially Dirk, will make of it. Years ago The West Wing hit the nail on the head when Leo McGarry notes: “I went to rehab. My friends embraced me when I got out. You relapse, it's not like that. "Get away from me" - that's what it's like.” Obviously Roxy’s friends, Dirk especially, treated her with nothing but love and kindness - but that didn’t make Roxy’s fear less real. My point in all of this long-windedness is that as a fandom, far too often we minimize the impact of Roxy’s addiction - hell, in many ways it’s Rose who gets the narrative’s attention on the matter, to the point where the narrative has to Retcon Vriska back into existence to keep her from descending into chronic alcohol abuse (and for some other, likely less important reasons). We celebrate Roxy for being badass enough to slay the Empress, but say almost nothing about her being badass enough to dominate her addiction on her own, quietly, matter-of-factly, like a motherfuckin’ boss. Alcoholism isn’t something you ‘beat,’ it isn’t something you can cure, it’s something you fight to gain mastery over, a monster you have to wrestle to the mat and keep pinned for the rest of your life. Every time you say ‘one drink couldn’t hurt,’ every time you minimize the horrors of Alcoholism, every time you stick a martini glass back in Roxy LaLonde’s hand because, hey, being drunk is her thing, you do her and all recovering alcoholics a disservice. You minimize their victories and it isn’t right. Please, we have to stop doing this. We have to be better than this. (And w should probably all go buy @wielderofthepen​‘s merch because now i feel bad for using them as a catalyst for my Alcoholism Lecturant.)
