The Long Way Euround – Day 2: Mallee region and Silo Art Trail
Tumblr media
Today was the second day of our big Classic Mercedes road trip through NSW and Victoria.   Yesterday, we finished up in Cobram, Vic, after a day driving the windy roads of the Upper Murray Region.   Day 2 had the longest distance driving of the trip, so we woke up early. ready roll out by 6AM. The morning greeted us with grey skies and steady rain.   It didn't look good for our longest day behind the wheel.  A check of the rain radar showed the storm moving east and only scattered showers to the west of us, our direction of travel.
Tumblr media
Sure enough, that proved to be the case.  The rain had largely finished by the time we hit our first stopping point in Echuca for breakfast.   We hit a local bakery, and I had an English Breakfast in a pie.  This mean a pie containing Egg, Bacon, Sausage and beans.   It worked much better than it sounds. This area was very lush and fertile, and there was a combination of olive groves and livestock as we drove along.    The roads were mostly straight and we just cruised admiring the scenery and seeing occasional glimpses of the Murray River as it meandered along.   All the cars were running well, with only the 380SEC suffering from a minor hot start issue, likely a fuel accumulator. From Echuca, we continued to follow the river, and left the main highway to take smaller roads that were far more interesting.   We stopped for a break tat Lake Charm, which was quite windy and then continued into Swan Hill to regroup.   At Swan Hill one of the guys produced a cake and some oranges which was a great way to take a break from the driving.
Tumblr media
As we continued along the river from Swan Hill, the weather kept getting better, and the scenery continued to change.   The lush greenery gave way to red dirt and scrub.   The olive trees and sheep gave way to more and more wheat fields, as well as trees growing nuts. This was part of the trip was a gentle cruise with minimal traffic and interesting scenery that was slowly changing.   Our lunch destination was Robinvale, where after driving over 400km we stopped at a Vietnamese take out store.   The owner was a real character and he also owns the local Chinese restaurant.    By the time we hit Robinvale the weather was really good, and it was quite hot at 27C.    We refueled the cars, and since the morning involved very relaxed cruising, I got 13.7l/100km which is about as good as it gets in an ADR 450SLC. After Robinvale, we headed south towards the viewing Platform at Lake Tyrell.   The afternoon driving was quite different to the morning.   We were really in wheat country, with wheat as far as the eye could see.   The roads were empty and quite good, with lots of curves as they went around the various wheat fields.   The area was full of undulating hills, so the road had lots of ups and downs as well as the curves around the fields.    This was some of the best driving of the day.
Tumblr media
We stopped for a break at Lake Tyrell and had a bit of a look around.   The scenery is quite good here, and it was well worth taking a short detour to see it. The rest of the afternoon was planned to follow part of the Silo Art Trail.   The Silo Art Trail is a collection of 15 grain silos in the Wimmera and Mallee area.   It covers 700km, and you could probably spend two days doing the whole thing.   We didn't do the whole Trail, but six of the silos that were generally on our way to Horsham, where we planned to finish for the day.
Tumblr media
The first one we visited was the Sea Lake silo.  It has a vibrant mural of a little girl siting on a swing in a windswept area.   We stopped for a longer break here as this is one of the two we had identified as ideal for shooting some good photos of the cars with the silo in the background. The next one was at Lascelles.  This wasn't one of the Silos we had identified for a longer stop, but we ended up taking one anyway.  There was something eerie about this silo.  It was of a local Farmer and his wife.   The Farmer looked like had weathered a few too many droughts in his life, and the town of Lascelles mirrored this, looking rather down and out.
Tumblr media
Next were short stops at Rosebery and Brim.   Brim was the one that kicked off the whole thing.   These were interesting, but not as vibrant as some of the others.  We only stopped for a few minutes. as we really wanted to get to Sheep Hills while the light was still good.   Sheep Hills looked like the most eye catching silo of the ones we were visiting, and it didn't disappoint.    We arrived just as the sun was starting to get long and the vibrant mural looked great with our classics lined up.
Tumblr media
It was generally about 30 minutes or so between each silo.  The roads meandered through the wheat fields, mostly along side the railway tracks. We had originally planned to see Rupanyap, but we decided to skip it and see the final silo in the town of Horsham.   We almost didn't bother going to look at this one, as it was getting dark.   I'm sure glad we did.   It rivaled Sheep Hills for visual impact.   It wasn't just the silo that was painted, it was also ancillary buildings, for example one with a black cockatoo.
Tumblr media
After our final Silo, we refueled and checked into our hotel in Horsham.   I checked my oil level, and like yesterday, I was at the low mark.  Even after adding a liter this morning.   I topped it off again, and as I shut the bonnet, all of a sudden one of my horns started to blow continuously. It was rather loud in the parking lot of the hotel, and I quickly put on a head torch and got under the car to take a look.   Sure enough, my drivers side horn was blowing, but the passengers wasn't.   This seemed to rule out the switch being the issue.   If I held the horn tightly, it at least stopped making noise.   While this solved the immediate problem, I couldn't stay there all night.   Since I wasn't able to let go, one of the other guys found my tool kit and extracted a screwdriver for me to remove the connections to that horn.   However, the horn was cowed by this display of tools and stopped blowing once I had the screwdriver in my hand.   This time I shut the bonnet less vigorously so as not to disturb the horn. After this we adjourned to the local pub for dinner.  As with last night, the pub was very good. Amusingly, it provided the option to add a side of Chicken or Beef to the vegetarian meal. It had been another great day on our trip, and very different to the sort of driving we did yesterday.   This was my first time in this area of Australia and I enjoyed it.

No Waitrose October 7 - Days 24-26
Day 24
Saturday, Saturday, Saturday… Saturn’s Day. The Saturdays were a band, weren’t they. I still think of them as a new band, they’re definitely not new. Can’t remember a single one of their songs. Always found it strange that a band would choose to have the word “turd” in the middle of their name as well, but then I notice things like that. Who was in The Saturdays anyway? I think I know some of them… Frankie! Una! Mollie! Rochelle! Another one! Rochelle’s all over the telly these days isn’t she, she presents a terrible music quiz show with her husband Marvin off of JLS, the one with idiots trying to recognise songs. And she does Ninja Warrior UK with Ben Shephard and Chris Kamara, we quite like that one. It’s essentially the Eliminator from Gladiators but over and over and over again, isn’t it. It’s like they went “Oh, how can we make Gladiators but for no money?”, that’s how Ninja Warrior started, I bet you.
Sorry about all that rubbish, I’m stalling because it’s now Monday evening and I literally can’t remember what happened on Saturday. That’s the problem with this pandemic thing, all the days are blurring into one.
Oh, I remember, here we go, let’s start now. I’ll need you to think back to a previous blog, day 18, where I compared writing this blog to running a marathon. Well, one of the main reasons I did that was with the aim of annoying my readers who are marathon runners, namely my older sister. Anyway, on Saturday my older sister, having read day 18 and recognised that I’d set out to annoy her, decided to annoy me by sending me a number of lengthy WhatsApp messages detailing exactly why what I’d said about marathon running wasn’t really correct. To give her her dues, this did really annoy me as I kept having to read lots of messages about marathon running and try to think of something to say about them. I’ll get her back somehow, don’t worry.
What we did do on Saturday was loooooads of baking. First of all we made some pizza dough to have pizzas for the four year-old I live with’s tea, then while that was proving we made some fairy cakes with chocolate icing and sprinkles on the top, then we finished off making the pizzas for the four year-old I live with’s tea and cooked them and ate them.
I did that thing of getting out all the toppings for the pizzas in separate bowls so that the four year-old I live with could put the toppings on herself. I was showing her all the toppings and when I got to the mozzarella I asked if she knew what it was, and she said no, and I was like “it’s CHEESE!”. And she was like, “no it’s not”, so I was like, “yeah, it’s CHEESE! It’s called… MOZZARELLA!” and she said “I don’t like mozzarella” and then it became a Thing. And as anyone who has ever met a small child knows, the last thing you want is for something to become a Thing, you just have to Tony Blair it, change the terms of debate. But stupidly, I couldn’t let it lie, I was all “NO, you DEFINITELY like mozzarella, EVERY SINGLE PIZZA you have EVER eaten has had mozzarella on it, there is simply NO WAY you do not like mozzarella, I will NOT accept that.”
Obviously, this was pretty much the silliest thing I could have said, as the four year-old I live with then dug in even deeper and shouted at me until I went and got the big wodge of Pilgrim’s Choice from the fridge and we grated that all over her pizza and she was happy.
I said we did looooooooads of baking, but actually we just made fairy cakes and pizza, but by the time we’d done that and with the mozzarella meltdown it felt like we’d been through the wars.
We also carved a pumpkin, that’s what we did. I let the four year-old I live with draw a face with a Sharpie and then I did all the carving. I told her to draw a big face, so she drew a tiny face, but to be fair to her it does look pretty scary, I was very pleased with it.
I hadn’t been out all day, so while the person I live with was putting the four year-old I live with to bed I went out for a walk in the wind and rain and immediately regretted it. It was strange though, I went down to the end of my street and at the end of my street there’s a restaurant called Mekan. It used to be called Fishmekan and it’s a huge cavern of a restaurant that never, ever has anyone in it. The person I live with and I exchange regular updates on how empty Fishmekan is, it’s a running joke in our house. Except on Saturday night, there were people in it. It was busier than I’ve ever seen it. I couldn’t believe it. Good luck to them, I’m pleased for them, I suppose we’re going to have to find another struggling business to make fun of now.
Vanessa, that’s the other Saturday, I went and looked it up for you.
Didn’t go to Waitrose.
Day 25
The clocks went back overnight, marking the end of British Summer Time and the beginning of hellish doomscape nightmare time. Have you noticed that nowadays when the clocks change it’s confusing in a different way because your phone seems to do it for you. So instead of thinking “Oh hell, which way do I need to change this clock” you’re looking at your phone thinking “Is that the actual time? Has it definitely changed? How will I know?”. I looked out of the window at the cricket club clock opposite and it said the same time as my phone, which confused me even more, because that suggested that someone had been in the cricket club at the crack of dawn on a Sunday to change the clock for the benefit of pretty much precisely no one.
I thought about sharing this observation with the person I live with, but decided that she probably wouldn’t be interested, so I kept quiet.
The weather was mad all day, it was quite nice and sunny for the most part but with regular yet mercifully brief torrential downpours. After lunch (the rest of yesterday’s pizzas) we decided to brave the elements and go for an outing to the Knepp Estate near Horsham.
I first went there last November after one of my friends, also a reader of this blog (hello Ian), asked me if I’d been to the Knepp Estate near Horsham and I’d never heard of it. I don’t like not having heard of things, so I looked it up and found out how to get there and went for a walk on my week off on my own. Ever since, I’ve been trying to find the time to go back to the Knepp Estate near Horsham with the people I live with in tow for a walk, but haven’t quite got round to it.
It’s a bit ridiculous it’s taken until now, to be honest. The main thing that has kept us sane since March has been going on walks in the countryside. I realised quite early on that if you went anywhere even vaguely off the beaten path in Sussex, you could easily walk for hours without seeing anyone. So that’s what we did. Almost every weekend over the summer we packed a picnic, found an obscure footpath on an OS map and went exploring. Hamsey, Cooksbridge, Chiltington, Laughton, Barcombe, Chailey, Wiston; it was a real roll call of places that barely exist. (I got those names off of my Instagram, I hadn’t remembered any of them).
The best walk we went on, though, was to Paul McCartney’s house. I’ve known for ages that Paul McCartney has a house in Sussex, so every time we went to some obscure place for a walk I’d say, “Oooh, do you reckon that’s Paul McCartney’s house?” and the person I live with would say “No, of course that’s not Paul McCartney’s house, Paul McCartney wouldn’t live THERE”. It got to the point where I actually looked up where Paul McCartney’s house in Sussex is, and it turned out to be near Peasmarsh, which is near Rye over on the Kent-Sussex border. It’s not that far away as the crow flies, maybe 40-ish miles, but the roads are so awful it takes about an hour and a half to get out there from Brighton so we don’t bother very often.
Anyway, it turned out that the person I live with’s sister was on holiday in Kent in August and wanted to come and meet us for a walk and so I was like “OMG WE CAN GO TO MACCA’S GAFF” and somehow everyone agreed to this.
To get to Paul McCartney’s house, here is what you do: drive to Jempson’s supermarket in Peasmarsh and park your car there (Jempson’s is some crazy supermarket/café/petrol station/post office brand that only exists on the Kent-Sussex border, it’s fancy). Then walk up out the back of Jempson’s, across the field, up the lane, down the path, through the wood, along the track, through the gate, across another field and then you get to Paul McCartney’s field. You can tell it’s Paul McCartney’s field because it’s really nice. It’s clearly not a field owned by a farmer, because it’s covered in wildflowers, and there’s a wide grassy path been mown in it for you to walk across. It’s the nicest field I’ve ever been in.
When we were walking across it some deer turned up and ran over the brow of the hill, towards Paul McCartney’s house. However, I didn’t know that that was Paul McCartney’s house over the brow of the hill, I thought it was a different house, so we ended up going and hanging around a house that we thought was Paul McCartney’s house but it wasn’t really and peering in the garden. Then we walked back to Jempson’s and bought miniature tubs of ice cream, ate them in the car park and drove home.
So actually we never did see Paul McCartney’s house this summer, but we had a nice time anyway, and that was the main thing.
Where was I? Ah yes, the Knepp Estate near Horsham, we finally made it to Knepp. It’s a private estate, there’s not a visitor’s centre or anything I think, but there are public footpaths across it so we stuck to those. This would be a good point to explain about the rewilding project that they are doing at the estate, but I know sod all about it, you’ll have to look it up yourselves if you’re interested. It’s owned by a woman called Isabella Tree, she’s on the radio sometimes. We saw some nice trees and Knepp Castle and a mill pond and some historic eel traps. Then we went up a wooden staircase up a tree to a viewing platform, then across a boggy field and did some squelching in mud, which we all enjoyed.
At this point it was getting dark, and the person I live with said “Oooh, it is getting dark early now isn’t it”, and I said, well, that’ll be the clocks going back. Then the person I live with admitted she hadn’t noticed the clocks going back until that point, which made me wish that I had mentioned it to her earlier.
We were walking back to the car along the track that goes up to the main house on the estate when a Land Rover came along, so we got out of the way and as it went past it became apparent that the driver was about 11 years old. He had a load of what looked like responsible adults in the car with him, so I think it was probably ok. He was so proud of himself though, he gave us a little wave as he went past, I think he was over the moon that someone else had seen him driving. Then we saw some deer and went home.
One of the more curious things about Knepp is that it’s a stone’s throw from the A24. There’s a McDonalds drive through about half a mile away. On the way there the McDonalds was so busy that there were hordes of people outside and some of them had spilled onto the central reservation of the A24 to eat their burgers. It seemed to me unnecessarily punishing in a pandemic to eat your lunch in the middle of four lanes of traffic, but I’m not judging. Sundays can turn out like that, can’t they.
Didn’t go to Waitrose.
Day 26
God, I’ve gone on a bit about the weekend, haven’t I? Monday, worked a bit, played a bit, made some banana bread, watched University Challenge, went to bed.
Didn’t go to Waitrose.

12 Philly Restaurants With Great Natural Wine Lists
Drink
These bars and restaurants are leading the natural wine movement.
Vedge in Midtown Village, one of Philly’s restaurants with natural wine. Photograph by Jason Varney
Check out these cutting-edge menus for natural wine in Philly.
The Farm & Fisherman Tavern
Horsham and Cherry Hill When beloved Philly chef Josh Lawler booked it to the ’burbs, he traded up for a pair of standout wine lists. The bottles he sells are true gems; the nicely priced Green Valley valdiguié and bubbly Day Wines pét-nat — an easy-drinking red from Broc Cellars — are worth the trip. 575 Horsham Road, Horsham, and 1442 Marlton Pike East, Cherry Hill.
Vedge
Midtown Village The vegetable-forward plates here are complemented by a wine menu that has natural picks from far-off places — think orange wines from the Canary Islands and merlots from Australia. (The latter will make you rethink what you knew about the ubiquitous red.) Consider ordering a bottle of Ross & Bee Maloof Wines out of Oregon; it’s made by Vedge’s former beverage director. 1221 Locust Street.
A.Kitchen and A.Bar
Rittenhouse There are plenty of places to get great wine on the Square, but this duo were early natural-wine adapters. (The staff here knows its stuff, too, so this is the place to ask lots of questions.) Consider going to A.Kitchen on the first Wednesday of each month for the Cellar Raid; 300-plus bottles are half-price. 135 South 18th Street and 1737 Walnut Street.
Martha
Kensington While Martha is known as a humble neighborhood joint, the bold, broad by-the-glass lineup says otherwise. (In fact, owner Jon Medlinsky is very committed to serving only natural and mostly local.) The rotation changes often, so there are always things to explore, including pours from Las Jaras, a wine collaboration from Philadelphia-area native, noted natural-wine booster and Master of None star Eric Wareheim. 2113 East York Street.
Kensington Quarters
Fishtown Longtime devotees of natural practices will find a lot to love on the list at KQ, which is built around the offerings of importers who focus on natural, sustainable and biodynamic wines. The result: a bottle selection and tight, rotating by-the-glass list that explore themes like quaffable reds and grower champagnes. 1310 Frankford Avenue.
Fountain Porter
East Passyunk FP is known for its all-vinyl soundtrack, excellent beer list and $5 burger, but in the past few years, the chalkboard menu has quietly begun to include glasses of Austrian skin-contact wines, fizzy pét-nats, and new-school reds from California — burger-friendly, of course. 1601 South 10th Street.
Teresa’s Next Door
Wayne Main Line wine lists generally bank on bordeaux rather than cult-status bottles of blaufränkisch, but Teresa’s boasts page upon page of bottles rarely spotted in the Pennsylvania wine wilds. A petite bottle shop in the cafe next door offers the entire esoteric list to take home. 124 North Wayne Avenue.
Good King Tavern
Bella Vista Taking a cue from France’s affinity for laid-back drinking, this bistro offers a rotating selection by the glass or pichet — a shareable pitcher that’s 750 milliliters. (The wines are also cheekily categorized as “good,” “better” and “best.”) Looking to learn more? On Sundays, co-owner Chloe Grigri hosts “Keep Wine Weird,” for which she cracks open some of the wilder selections from the cellar. 614 South 7th Street.
Zahav
Society Hill Michael Solomonov’s commitment to all things Middle East doesn’t stop at the hot line. The wine list explores sustainable reds and whites from Tzora in the Judean Hills and Lebanon’s legendary Château Musar. 237 St. James Place.
Walnut Street Café
University City The list at this all-day cafe is overseen by sommelier Etinosa Emokpae. (See page 93.) While not entirely natural, the menu runs from familiar to rarefied, with fascinating bottles that the staff isn’t afraid to pop open and pour. (Think celebration-worthy sancerres and half-price champagne on Thursdays.) 2929 Walnut Street.
Hungry Pigeon
Queen Village No need to plow through pages of vintages at this beloved corner cafe. Instead, a concisely corralled wine menu allows for unintimidating exploration; pick any one of the under-$10 draft options (like a natural malbec from Argentina), because they’re all good. 743 South 4th Street.
The Love
Rittenhouse There’s a note on the front page of the list that reads, “These are the wines that we are excited about right now and that we know you will love.” Sommelier Alexandra Cherniavsky delivers, with a roundup of canned wines, older bottles, and a selection of Pennsylvania and New York offerings. 130 South 18th Street.
Published as “A List of Lists” in the April 2019 issue of Philadelphia magazine.

Barwon Heads Caravan Park has a stunning location at the mouth of the Barwon River, where the river meets the sea. Guests can book waterfront camping sites which offer commanding views of the Barwon River and further out onto the ocean. Barwon Heads Caravan Park is ideally located in the heart of Barwon Heads, meaning guests can easily walk to the main street which is filled with trendy cafés, restaurants and shops. Popular surf beach, 13th Beach, is also within easy walking distance.
Tucked off the main road between Barwon Heads and Torquay is the tiny hamlet of Breamlea. The Breamlea Caravan Park is nestled off the main road in its own hidden piece of paradise, looking onto the picturesque Thompsons Creek on one side, with a surf beach the other side. Secluded and quiet, civilization feels hundreds of miles away, although it is located only 25 minutes from Geelong or 90 minutes from Melbourne. 14 Great Philly Restaurants We Wish Hadn’t Closed
Food & Drink
From long-lived greasy spoons to concepts from hotshot chefs who flamed out, we're remembering these much-loved spots taken from us too soon.
Devoted foodies and restaurant newbies love Foobooz. Sign-up now for our twice weekly newsletter.
Little Pete’s Diner
Philly has been in the midst of a long-lived restaurant boom that shows no signs of slowing. But amid the onslaught of new restaurants opening all over the city year after year, there are the fallen soldiers: old-school spots that got priced out due to rising rents, hotshot chefs whose ambition outstripped their business sense (or maybe just their luck), and concepts that made great food but, for whatever reason, just didn’t take. They live on in the form of dead Yelp pages and in our memories. Here’s a list of some of the bygone Philadelphia restaurants we miss the most.
Kanella South | Facebook
The Cooler Kanella
Kanella South Closed in: 2018 With Kanella South, it finally felt like Konstantinos Pitsillides finally had the right tools — a spit, a wood-burning oven — to really show off his skills. The Queen Village space was just gorgeous, too. But tax issues forced the spot to close earlier this year, which is a shame — Philly’s Greek scene is in something of a shambles (though we’re optimistic about the upcoming Koukouzeli), so it was exciting to see a concept pushing the envelope. Luckily, you can still get that Cypriot goodness at Kanella Grill at 10th and Spruce.
The Everyman Diner
Little Pete’s Closed in: 2017 The iconic 24-hour diner at 17th and Chancellor was one of the dwindling number of places in the heart of Center City where folks from all walks of life could congregate over a plate of scrapple or corned beef. Accessible, welcoming spots like Little Pete’s pump the lifeblood of a city, and it seems like there are fewer and fewer of them every year. Now, we’ll have the opposite — a luxury hotel erected by New York developers — on a spot that many Philadelphians consider hallowed ground.
The Italian Spot That Felt Like Italy
Modo Mio Closed in: 2017 Peter McAndrews’s Modo Mio didn’t feel like an Italian restaurant — it felt like eating in Italy. It helped put Girard Avenue on the city’s dining radar a decade ago, and that highly affordable, Best of Philly-worthy tasting menu was a crazy good deal (and just crazy good). But problems with the logistics of the space and rent hikes got to be too much for the chef, who’s still got Paesano’s, Monsu, and Heffe Tacos. At least another great concept took Modo Mio’s place at 2nd and Girard: Cadence, our pick for 2018’s Best Farm-to-Table Restaurant.
The Soul Food Dive Bar
Elena’s Soul Lounge Closed in: 2012 According to neighborhood lore, the West Philly building home to Elena’s Soul had housed a bar or nightclub continuously for 104 years before a fire on Christmas Eve in 2012 consumed the building. In its last incarnation, old heads from the Leroy’s Showcase Lounge days drank alongside members of the queer punk bands playing shows upstairs. It was the kind of spot where everyone felt at home, the drinks were cheap, and the food was simple but delicious. Booker’s has filled the soul food void in the neighborhood with its upscale take, but there’s nothing quite like enjoying a Citywide alongside a platter of top-notch fried chicken, collards, and candied yams in a dark bar with your neighbors belting karaoke in the background.
The Fat Ham’s hot chicken | Photo by Vanessa Beahn
The Spot That Nailed Southern Dining
The Fat Ham Closed in: 2017 We’ll always love the Fat Ham for its hot chicken, but the memories are bittersweet: chef-owner Kevin Sbraga’s empire grew too big too quickly, and not long after the flagship Fat Ham shuttered, the rest of his concepts went with it. Now, the chef is attached to the upcoming Fitler Club, and yet another concept, Tipsy Bistro, has opened in the Fat Ham’s former home.
The Petite Portuguese BYO
Koo Zee Doo Closed in: 2013 A 50 Best Restaurants-worthy (rare) Portuguese restaurant in Northern Liberties (rarer) run by a James Beard Award-nominated chef (yep)? How could we not love this place? But after three and a half years, slow weeknights at Koo Zee Doo prompted owners Carla Gonçalves and David Gilbert to close down. The city does have some great Portuguese spots (Cafe Liz and Peruvian hybrid El Balconcito come to mind), but they’re all solidly in North or Northeast Philly. Here’s hoping another Portuguese concept can make it work downtown someday soon.
The Pseudo-BYO from Jose Garces
Garces Trading Co. Closed in: 2018 Before beer and wine were in grocery stores around Philly, there was Garces Trading, a BYO with a then-exciting (and beautiful) wine cellar inside the restaurant, which specialized in gourmet goods and sandwiches with the celebrity chef’s signature touch. But the retail counter was nixed and replaced with a full-service bar 2013 — and earlier this year, the concept became one of the surprisingly few casualties in Garces Group’s recent restructuring due to outstanding debts.
Khmer Kitchen | Photo by Alex Tewfik
The Best Cambodian Spot in Philly
Khmer Kitchen Closed in: 2018 This family-run BYO in Pennsport repped Cambodian cuisine, broadening the scope of the city’s dining scene and serving incredible chicken curry and pleah (spicy raw beef salad with lime, peanuts, and fresh mint) in the process. Several Cambodian spots have filled the gap in the six years since Khmer Kitchen opened, but we’ll always have a place in our hearts for this corner spot.
The Original Chef-y BYO
Django Closed in: 2008 Before there was Aimee Olexy and Stephen Starr — as successful a restaurant business partnership as the city has ever seen — there was Aimee Olexy and Bryan Sikora, chef and Olexy’s then-husband. Django’s homespun chic vibe and killer cheese plate  signaled what was to come. Both Olexy and Sikora have since gone on to better things: he owns concepts in Wilmington and Kennett Square, and she’s become an iconic restaurateur in Philly.
The Farm-to-Table OG
The Farm & Fisherman Closed in: 2016 Why we miss it: Josh and Colleen Lawler’s petite Washington Square West BYO turned out elegant farm-to-table, snout-to-tail fare — they famously had no walk-in refrigeration, meaning that fresh ingredients were constantly coming into the restaurant. Remember when farm-to-table was an exciting new thing rather than a Portlandia punchline? We do, and it was great. But the Lawlers outgrew their downtown space and chose to retool and relocate their farm-fresh ethos to the suburbs. There are now two Farm & Fisherman Taverns, one in Horsham and one in Cherry Hill.
The Midcentury Greasy Spoon
Snow White Closed in: 2011 Philly has lost a lot of its great diners in recent years. Yeah, there’s Delco and Jersey on either side of the city, but still — a major American city needs the accessibility, affordability, and history that a solid long-lived diner can provide. Snow White’s space at 2nd and Market was reopened under the same ownership as Revolution House, a kid-friendly yet upscale spot for pizza, beer, and pub grub, but it just doesn’t have the same cachet.
Taco Angeleno | Facebook
The Great Taco Cart in — Sigh — West Philly
Taco Angeleno Closed in: 2018 West Philly’s lack of great pizza and Mexican fare is widely acknowledged (hey, South Philly has tons of both and is just a quick ride over the Gray’s Ferry bridge). But Taco Angeleno’s straightforward, L.A.-style tacos — flavorful slow-braised meats, a simple toppings bar of chopped onion, radish, cilantro and curtido, and seitan for vegetarians — this is West Philly, after all — filled that void. Owner Vanessa Jerolmack kept prices affordable and turned a once-vacant lot into a family-friendly seasonal  gathering place for the neighborhood, but she made the tough choice to not reopen for the summer season this year. At the same time, she hinted that her taco cart might be back in some form in the future, so we’re holding out hope.
The Upscale Peruvian Spot
Chifa Closed in: 2013 At Chifa, Jose Garces focused on the relationship between Peruvian cuisine and its Cantonese influence, putting yuca fries, lomo saltado, soup dumplings, and scallion pancakes all on one glorious menu. But Chifa was also the first Garces restaurant to falter, closing after four years in business. Whether that was a sign of things to come with the celebrity chef — Chifa was eventually replaced with Cuban diner Rosa Bianca, another concept that didn’t take — or it just opened a decade or so before its time, it would have been nice for Peruvian fare to take hold in the city back then.
The Neighborhood Hangout
Mémé Closed in: 2012 A beloved neighborhood spot (Fitler Square) serving quality New American fare is a beautiful thing. And apparently, making killer fried chicken will make folks fondly remember your restaurant for years after it folds. After closing Mémé, chef-owner David Katz has been a culinary director at Honeygrow and is now spearheading Capogiro’s nationwide expansion. And the space at 22nd and Spruce became Fitler Dining Room, which was then transformed into its current occupant, Trattoria Carina — another beloved neighborhood spot.

The reason why the reverse lookup website owners to keep all the information about the phone number owner confidential is because they do not want other people to know the name and address of the owner of an unknown phone number. This means that if you are a parent who finds out that your teenage son or daughter has been making prank calls on his or her cell phone, then you will not be able to use the internet to find out any information about the person.
