Genesis: AAAAAAA! Ahem. I mean to say: Zachariah McKinley Fair, a biohazard means it is unsafe for humans, and often involves dangerous non-human organisms. SUCH AS WILD MICE.

Zack: They’re not wild, they’re my fri-

Genesis: Zachariah. If you finish that word, I will firaga them immediately.

Zack: NO! *Hides the mice with his body*

After Genesis’ 5th childish scream, Angeal’s 3rd round of dry-heaving, and Sephiroth and Cloud being found twitching near the entrance, Zack concedes that maybe he has some work to do.

Cloud decides to body-double for Zack by riding him like a backpack.

Zack: Maybe this sock is salvageable!

Koala Cloud: Nope, put it in the bag.

Zack: But I wanna- 

Cloud: IN THE BAG, FAIR.

Sephiroth is in full-coverage PPE to protect his hair and senses, and is excavating the fridge with gloves. 

Zack: But my pasta is in that tub of whipped cream! 

Angeal, working at the sink and dry-heaving: I MADE THAT FOR YOU LAST MONTH.

They have to set up a rotating schedule of visiting Zack's apartment so he's motivated to clean everything at least weekly, but Zack is really grateful.

He never means for it to get this bad, it’s just…he makes friends with the critters! And, well, sometimes he forgets things. And…and sometimes he just gets overwhelmed. He looks at the pile of dishes and knows he can’t do them all today, so he doesn’t do any.

Or he tries. He starts by picking up the dishes in his bedroom, but trips over a shirt along the way. He sets the dishes down to take the shirt to the laundry, but his eyes catch on the dusty blinds, so obviously he has to clean them, but then he looks up and it’s 3 hours later and he’s dismantled the whole window dressing and is cleaning the grooves with a q-tip and everything is worse than when he started.

Zack breaks down trying to explain it, and Genesis is the first to tell him he understands. Genesis and Angeal sandwich him between themselves while Sephiroth puts a hand on Zack’s shoulder and Cloud starts worming his way into Zack’s arms.

Zack cleans for each of them all the time, but for some reason, he can’t understand why they’d help him too.

It surprises him when Angeal comes over and just. Does all his dishes. Or when Genesis comes over and "purifies this hellhole of a bathroom" (gives it a decent clean and fills it with good soaps/battery operated candles/fresh towels). Or when Cloud obsessively sorts and folds his laundry, or when Sephiroth puts everything through the wash when he's working from home one day.

Zack doesn't GET that he's done the exact same things for them, like the time he scoured Angeal's pots for half a day, or polished every metallic surface in Sephiroth's apartment, or dusted Genesis' place so thoroughly it gleamed, or put fresh sheets on Cloud's bed, bundled him up, and did all his laundry while he was dissociating.

He doesn't realize the insurmountable task of addressing The Chair is easy for Angeal (it all goes in the wash. It's all dirty enough.), but the same man finds throwing out socks with holes hard (but acceptable when Zack does it for him).

Zack forgets that he folded all of Gen's towels into swans when Gen’s parents were coming into town and is blown away when Gen leaves a simply folded towel on the rack.

He thinks the work he puts into adding color to Sephiroth’s spartan apartment is nothing, not realizing Sephiroth’s heart is warmed by each and every little splash Zack sneaks in.

Zack doesn’t realize that Cloud would rather do all of Zack’s mopping than address the sensory hell that is washing monster gunk off his own boots, which Zack does for him often.

Zack is a colleague and a good friend! Why on Gaia would Sephiroth commit himself to decidedly unprofessional behavior? Sephiroth doesn't touch people even on his best days. How crude. He's never heard such nonsense in all his life!

Why am I STILL THIS SAD about a FICTIONAL CHARACTER?!?!

A lovely commenter asked me to map the cast between Courage the Cowardly Dog and FF7.

I have never seen Courage, so I decided to watch some on YouTube and do my best. Feel free to laugh at my failures and successes.

President Shinra - I'm 1:05 min in and he's the guy telling "Jennings" to acquire the moon. I don't care if he's an unnamed, non-recurring character or a staple of the show. I've already picked the rich asshole as Shinra.

Reeve might be Jennings, but I doubt it.

Shinra's shadow is scaring small, innocent children and their ice cream. I chose wisely. Jennings also betrayed the rich old man. He is Reeve and I'm feeling good about this.

Maybe the shadow is Hojo or Jenova: it's running around fucking with everyone.

I'm getting Genesis vibes from Grumpy Old Man (Eustace?), and Angeal vibes from Kind Old Woman (update: Muriel?).

He is so loyal he faced a vacuum. This can be none other than Zack. Genius in crisis, loyal to the bitter end, annoys Genesis, adores Angeal, has sassy buddies, and thanks the mouse for helping him. A people person and a wonderful friend. I also get Wedge vibes from the fear, but he's more Zack in the end because pupper.

Zack takes Seph to his home at Gongaga. Fair family and Seph yay ! \(^0^)/

AHHH yessss! The family!!! <3 <3 I love this idea SO much!!! (Beware of the extensive length this was stretched to due to a serious lack of self-control and just about every concerning trait in the alphabet)

It’s a lonnngg weekend, maybe some kind of holiday break (look these guys are nuts and tyrannical but they still like holidays), and Zack is ready to blow the roof off the place. Can we get another Kool-aid man OH YEAH??!! He hasn’t had a vacay break in so long, and now that the tumult of the Genesis war has finally quelled a little, it was time to kick back and relax. (NOT like that Costa del sol trip. No way Jose.) He loves dolphins and all, and he even loves Midgar, but he was thinking something personal. Something away from all the smoke and road rage.

Bingo! He’s gonna visit home. Ohhh he missed his family so much!!

But wait-

Zack glances over, and there’s Seph sitting at his desk, buried in Mount Everest. He couldn’t just leave Seph behind… not when he would be stuck doing all the paperwork himself. Not when he would be doing paperwork. And, most of all, 14 days away??? That is WAY too long without his best buddy. It wouldn’t feel like a vacation if all he wanted to do was come home.

Time to add oneeee more thing to the packing list.

Sephiroth is trepidatious, as anyone who likes staying in their comfort zone at home (coughs) would be. Take that and a few qualms about him not fitting in, and we get a very nervous embodiment of perfection—he would hide under the table if he could fit. He… he can’t go. People were terrified of him. He would soil the mood, blight it, especially when Zack was reuniting with his parents for the first time in years.

But Zack is there to assure him otherwise. He wants him there—dragging him out of the office is just a bonus. Ma and Pa would love Seph. It’s only science! He loves Seph, so his folks will too. He promises him that he won’t leave his side, not for one second. Then it’s time for the pupper eyes.

���.Alright. Fine. He’s in. *cue Krakatoa erupting into a mushroom cloud with spiky hair*

Upon arriving, Sephiroth‘s first thought is just how clean everything is. No smog. No Mako. There is an old reactor, but Zack assures him it’s dormant and shut down bc “folks around here were afraid of it exploding”. Very smart on their part, very stupid on ShinRa’s. But Zack drags him away from that train of thought with a lasso. NO WORK, Seph! Nothing remotely related to ShinRa!!

Sephiroth watches from afar as Zack rushes towards his house and reunites with his family. His parents are overcome, hugging and teary and more hugs (it’s very easy to see where Zack got his knack from). It’s very heartwarming, but still… a little hollow all the same. It is hard to keep his mind from drifting towards the thought of a loving mother embracing her son.

And THEN—

Ohhhh boy… Zack makes his presence known. Why would he do that? He was perfectly fine standing behind the fence. Goddess his parents are looking at him… his father looks scrutinizing, maybe, it only made sense. And his mother… she is walking towards—

She hugs him. Very tight.

“Thank you for taking care of my son…” she whispers.

Sephiroth is very uncomfortable—like a lot. Zack was the only one he ever let hug him, but he supposed this was a kindred spirit… and… he needed to correct her. Very gently. He urges himself to relax, sighing deeply.

“Your son took care of me.”

Zack’s father obviously shares similar feelings. He pats him on the shoulder and praises him for all he’s done. Him, the slayer. This was uncalled for. And ZACK—he is just standing there letting him endure all of this. Why won’t he save him…?!

He feels better again once Zack is sitting beside him at the kitchen table, gently squeezing his hand under it whenever he tenses up. There’s a lot of questions and stories to go around; Zack monopolizes the conversation, talking about his Chocobo friend and the one who sometimes sleeps in his helmet. Carl and Susan (sure let’s go with that) inventively ask about how they met, and boy Zack is ready to jump in and tell a (hyperbolic) version of how he was nearly burnt to a crisp and Seph saved him (that’s another smile from his parents to him goddamn it Zack). He goes on to tell him about Genesis, and how clones do exist, and how flowers can bloom with enough love… Then his parents ask about his scar. Sephiroth takes it from here, recounting the story without using names, and now it’s him who’s squeezing Zack’s hand tight <3

Zack is ecstatic to show Sephiroth his room! Firstly, Sephiroth is in awe at how many toys can fit on a single dresser. He finds it all very fitting—and then Zack goes on to recount every stuffed animal’s name on the bed. It’s a very long attendance list… but Sephiroth is very amused. Things get a little interesting when Zack pulls out a crumpled old newspaper and hands it to Seph—a paper with him on it, just a teen in the war, extremely glorified in the photo but a snapshot in time he remembered nonetheless. Zack says finding that newspaper, despite everything, was one of the best things to ever happen to him. Sephiroth is just as grateful for the photographer.

Dinner time! Seph never had a home-cooked meal before… and Zack was right. It tastes so much better than anything he had ever eaten. He tries his best to be polite, trying to eat only a moderate amount, but Mrs. Fair keeps coaxing him with MORE food and what is he supposed to do? Say no? That’s equally as rude. Sephiroth helps with the dishes afterwards and insists Zack does too <3

Following dinner, Zack leads Sephiroth outside and down by a lake. The stars are so bright and beautiful, completely unshielded by smog, their reflections rippling in untainted water. Zack commences to tell all these stories about trying to dump fish food in so they wouldn’t be hungry. Classic Zack. Sephiroth offers one of his Sephiroth-famous head pats, and Zack nearly falls asleep.

Zack insists Sephiroth takes his bed. Insists! It would’ve worked out too if Sephiroth didn’t nearly break it just by climbing in. Silly big boy. He ends up unfurling an old sleeping bag instead and huddles in right next to Zack’s bed—with only three to six stuffed animals dumping on him bc Zack is a bigger pupper now. Zack’s parents try to persuade him to sleep on the couch (better back support and all), but Seph politely yet vehemently insists otherwise.

Gongaga is home to a lot of rain too. A lot of it. Zack was never the biggest fan of thunder—but just bc it was loud, okay? He was NOT scared. Nope. Sephiroth wakes up in the middle of the night with Zack tucked into the sleeping bag beside him, curling up next to his shirt and hogging most of the pillow. Sephiroth doesn’t mind though; it wasn’t the first time, not even close, and Zack is a toasty warmth against him. Sephiroth just sighs and shakes his head, wrapping his arms around his friend as another clap of thunder roars outside. At least Zack would like all the puddles.

Three (Friend)Ships

Soooo I actually don’t dabble with romance *dives behind a couch.* It’s never been my jam. My jelly tho? That would be the interactions between characters and exploring how deep their bonds go! The words “best friend” send me to another world <3

1 ~ Zack Fair & Sephiroth (FF7) If you know me, even just the most microscopic tad, then you prolly know these two have organized the Louisiana Purchase on my heart. They are BEANS! I love them SO MUCH!!!! Adorable polarity aside, I’m just absolutely infatuated with the story these two share. I will always imagine their mutual tie to Angeal being what draws them together, able to empathize with each other’s grief in a way nobody else can. They need each other: Zack needs someone to look after him, protecting his enthusiasm, and Seph needs someone to mend his trust… and make him smile <3 <3 They become inseparable, all that bitterness Banora and Modeoheim stirred faded into nothingness. Come Nibelheim, and those books and mumsy have nothing on these two. Sephiroth already has too much to cherish to throw it all away <3 Poor mumsy. Can’t brainwash someone who’s gotta pupper who loves him more than you :3c

2 ~ Hiccup & Toothless (HTTYD) There is NO animal-human friendship that beats this one. Nope, nope! Sorry! Vetoing that thought (pssst your opinions are wonderful and valid). I think what makes these two SO powerful to me is that Toothless is never treated as a pet; he is Hiccup’s bestest friend and they are equals. They love each other to death and would do anything to protect the other <3 Seeing their bond evolve and the parallels unfolding between them is magical. I don’t think there will ever be a scene that tops Hiccup and Toothless walking towards the door, Toothless with his prosthetic tail and Hiccup mirroring that with his leg. It is godly <3 (I’m also always using these two as springboards for my writing. Small details like Zack always referring to Seph as “bud” are plucked right from here!)

3 ~ Mikey & Leatherhead (TMNT) Their friendship begins with Mikey spoon-feeding soup to the adorable, scaly bean, who’s plopped right on his bottom. The frequency of the SQUEAL I made. This is just one of the healthiest, most wholesome friendships to ever exist and I will love them forever!!! Mikey has unwavering trust in him from the moment they meet, helps him gain control of his rage, and offers his teddy bear for emotional support <3 Nothing but not judging a book by its cover and earning a true blue buddy as a result.

First (friend)ship: Hmmm… ig any two smash bros characters I visualized having a movie night lmao! l got my hands on a controller when I was 4. The first character dynamic I fell in love with tho was prolly Ash & Pikachu!

Last song: Hailee Steinfeld/DNCE, Rock Bottom

Last movie: Malignant & Ferdinand (watched back to back for some genius reason. The shift in tone was like being slapped with a trout)
