I think the thing which stands out about Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton more than every other driver pairing is that they were genuinely close at one point. Yes it fizzled as they grew older and they very much did fall apart but- they were close. They admit that. Anyone who knew them knew that. Presenters knew that even before they were on the same team.
In a sport where so many drivers on the grid met previously in karting it’s easy to say “oh they just vaguely knew each other as kids and you’re inventing more out of it with hindsight” which is true of a lot of drivers in all honesty. But knowing of each other is not the same as inviting someone to join you on multiple family holidays. That’s not an acquaintance. And there’s so much more too.
The thing about brocedes is that none of the background is imagined. They wrestled in hotel rooms. They had competitions over pizza. Lewis went to Nico’s when he didn’t want to cook. Lewis phoned up their karting boss after their first shared podium. Nico still thinks of him as a friend in his heart. Lewis is a better teammate now. They live in the same building. They both turned vegan and had an extreme e team in a series about the environment and gender equality. Lewis gives Nico’s children’s presents. They’ve known each other a long long time. They dreamed of being teammates and world champions in Greece and it happened in a way they never predicted but it happened.
The story is there, the friendship between them was very much there but competition got in the way.
Because Nico Rosberg with a world champion father and having previously been teammates with Michael Schumacher and having Lewis Hamilton as a current teammate was never far enough away that achieving his dream was impossible. It wasn’t just 2016 that it technically came down to Abu Dhabi and he’s still up there in lists of pole positions, total race victories, consecutive race wins etc and he retired quite early. No he never had the potential either of his Mercedes teammates did but he was more than a second driver and he certainly proved that.
And Lewis Hamilton with so much talent and having been dealt unfortunate hands relative to the incredibly privileged world of Motorsport knew he had the potential to be the best and he couldn’t understand why Nico was trying so hard and using some pretty questionable tactics to beat him. And it really was ugly by the end to an unhealthy degree and I don’t think that anyone would deny that Lewis got the brunt of that.
It seems that in general both have matured a lot now (as tends to happen in a decade) and they’re on fine terms on the rare occasion they do see each other but it really is the best kind of tragedy. The ending was inevitable, no one would have made a different decision, but it’s important to remember the friendship was there. There can’t be betrayal without trust first.

“I've been holding back all the things I want to do to you” + gazing into each others eyes during sex with max.
childhood friends to lovers as bonus context, after the championship win. oh it would be absolutely adorable.
you get me on a spiritual level. -- post championship number 2 // prompts: “I've been holding back all the things I want to do to you” + gazing into each others eyes during sex
It was a rainy day in Suzuka and your best friend had just been crowned champion of the world for the second year in a row.
The joy you felt was like none other. The way they announced it could have been better given the mess of a race they just had but you were the first one with your arms around the man when he returned to the garage.
“I’m so proud of you,” you whispers to him, kissing his jaw softly before you let him go.
Max wore the brightest smile, brighter than the brightest star, his eyes fixed on you like you were the only thing in the world. “Thank you, y/n. You know how much it means for you to be here with me.” He gives your hip a squeeze, stepping past you to talk to the crowd of people behind you.
The rest of the day was nothing if not perfect; the photos, the celebrating, the joy the entire team was feeling.
You and Max had returned to the hotel late that night, the 2 of you hanging around the track for as long as they’d let you stay. There was a few drinks going around to celebrate, not as many as the first championship win because at least Max can find the room key this time. (Though they did promise to properly celebrate when they finished the season in Abu Dhabi.)
“Stay with me tonight?” He asks, his hand in yours when he unlocks the door. “A champion shouldn't be alone.” He jokes and you smile, “sure.” You follow him into the room.
The two of you settle in on the bed after a while, Max had taken a shower and you borrowed a shirt from his suitcase to sleep in. The man laid next to you, his eyes shut when you rolled onto your side.
“Max?” You called quietly, nudging him.
He opens his eyes. “Yeah?”
“I know I said it before, but I'm so proud of you.” You smiled, your hand on his cheek.
The two of you had known each other since forever. Attached at the hip since you were in diapers basically. Your fathers were best friends and you grew up with the Verstappen family. Your father worked with his while he was racing so when Max started karting, it was only natural your father spent more than a few weekends with them and by extension, you did too.
Over the years, you and Max have had your fair share of fights, middle of the night calls, cold pizza in the kitchen trying to sober up moments but nothing ever beat the race weekends.
Watching him get out of that car with a smile on his face and more often than not, get up on that top step brought you an indescribable joy.
The type of joy that gave you butterflies, pulled on your heart and made you smile so wide your face physically hurt; love, it was love.
“I love you,” he smiles, the room was a bit dark but you could feel it against your hand.
Max rolls onto his side, now facing you. “Y/n?” He whispers, getting a hum from you. “Can I kiss you?”
You swallow the lump in your throat, “um,” you breathe, you had been waiting for this all these years but you weren’t sure if he felt the same way but now he does.
Why would you say no?
You don’t answer him but instead, you kiss him.
The man smiles against your lips, flipping you two over so you were flat on your back, his hands snaking under your - his - shirt and he kissed his way down your torso to your stomach.
You prop yourself up on your elbows to look at him, he glances up from between your legs, already pulling your shorts down and tossing them somewhere behind him.
He shifts to his knees, pulling you by your legs to him. You’re on an angle, Max stuffed a throw pillow under your hips as he pulls one of your legs over his shoulder.
“Is this okay?” He checks in with you and you nod, smiling at him. “More than okay.”
He leans down once more to kiss you, “You have no idea how long I've been holding back all the things I want to do to you”
Your leg pushed back and his cock pushing into you. Between your leg over his shoulder, the angle and the pillows holding you up, you knew you weren't going to last long.
A hand placed on your hip as he rammed into you, your back already arched. “So beautiful,” he mumbles to himself, letting your leg drop back down.
Max’s hand moves from your hip, up and over your chest and to your neck, his fingers wrapped around your pretty little neck. “That’s my girl, hm?” He asks, leaning down into you.
“Always yours,” you whispers, reaching up to kiss your champion.

okay i have a fic idea
daniel falls in love with reader who works as an interviewer in f1, she always asks the right questions and never oversteps boundaries, he always looks forward to seeing her after even the worst of races, slowly they show affection towards eachother sending gifts, seeing eachother more often before the interview starts, holding hands and simply being attached to the hip, everyone thinks they’re in a relationship at that point and they don’t even realize how hard they’ve fallen for eachother that they think it’s normal. And lets say reader goes up to daniel after a good race, kisses him out of nowhere and both end up being stunned
hope this made sense😭🫶🏻
Note: it took me ages to get the inspo for this.
Daniel has a soft spot from minute one.
You appeared on the paddock just when everything about his seat and Piastri exploded. He was expecting you to ask about it just like others had done. Instead, you asked about different things, about racing and the weekend.
He starts to ask his PR assistant about your interviews and you start trying to put him on your list. You two feel comfortable around each other. He always has a casual flirting demeanour when he is around you, but he is soft and cute and you start blushing when he smiles at you.
One day he arrives with a coffee and a croissant for you and it becomes a habit. You start meeting in the paddock for breakfast, and you start arriving together and casually talking. He starts paying visits when he is in your city and you are even invited when he has some gatherings with friends. Then the dates with only you two become a thing. Weekly and with some kind of pact, if you are in the same country, you have to meet for dinner.
Daniel doesn't mind having to drive for a couple of hours.
When everyone else decides that you two are secretly dating and that they adore the couple you make, comes right after you post a picture of you both having pizzas and watching a film at your home, your pet (if you have one) resting on his lap.
"Your girlfriend is there" Lando tells him.
"She is not my..." "How did you know I was talking about her then? You haven't even checked who it was"
Daniel blushes so hard and Lando laughs.
"She is not" "Then you hold hands, have dates, sleep together, or are cling to each other at any given moment just as friends"
Daniel just nods. That's how your friendship is. You two are close. It's normal. You say hi in your usual sweet voice and Daniel's heart speeds up. Then you kiss his cheek and he blushes. You give Lando a quick hug and fix his hair. Daniel loves you even more. He thinks you are the best. His best friend.
You are shaking after Abu Dhabi. He has done so well but it's the last for a while and you are feeling so many things. You sneak to his motor home as soon as you can. You still have work to do but ten minutes won't hurt anyone.
You find him with his family and friends. He has already changed into his clothes.
"Dan!"
He walks to you to have some privacy. You know his family well and they adore you because their Danny adores you and they see how in love he is. He knows you won't have any problem staying around them, but he is feeling too many things and wants a quiet moment with you because you always help him calm down and put some order on his feelings.
You hug him so close and hide on his neck. Daniel can feel your breath and the tip of your nose on his skin. He is feeling uneasy and is unable to move his hands from your waist. "I'm super proud of you" You tell him and then pull back.
You don't know what gets into you. It's probably his glassy eyes and his pink cheeks, or his finger drawing circles on your skin. But you lean and trap his lips in a really sweet but equally deep kiss. He kisses back and he loves every second of it.
When you pull back, you are both too stunned to speak. Your hands are on his neck and he is keeping you impossibly close by your waist. You both are breathing hard, minds working fast and hearts beating crazily.
It's you who speaks first.
"I suppose they were all right" He smiles. "With what?" He knows, he just wants to hear you.
"We are in love"
Daniel kisses you again and you feel the happiest woman alive.

It's the way Lewis said racing with Nico when they were kids is the best time of his career. It's also the way Nico literally had tears in his eyes during their last conference at Abu Dhabi GP 2016 when Lewis talked about their good old days with kellog frosties, pizza, and unicycling. They are irreplaceable to each other. They could go on and have so many friends in their lives but it's never the same. The person who you have so much memory with.
It's so tragic in the way that when you think about them as kids dreaming about racing in f1 together, they could never have imagined how things would turn out between them. They were like best friends for life.
"I want to achieve this with you by my side" > this ruined me 😭😭😭
Brocedes lore
The reason Brocedes can never be replicated is that it was never just a sporting rivalry. Being childhood besties with someone means bonding your inner child with someone else's, sharing your hopes and dreams with them not just saying, "I want to achieve this" but saying, " I want to achieve this with you by my side." It's the way Nico goes out of his way to mention Lewis because it makes him real, it's the way he knew Lewis was holding his breath on his pole lap before Lewis even said it himself, it's the way he is critical about Lewis but can't stand it when someone else does it, it's the way Nico asked Lewis, "you're still flat out motivated, right?" not as an interviewer but as someone who knows Lewis is a fighter through and through, it's the way that was the only time Lewis looked at Nico and smiled because he understood Nico was saying, "I know you. I remember you. I know you don't give up," it's the way Lewis has a working relationship with Alonso who bribed mechanics but refuses to say Nico's name because being hurt by someone is depthless while hating someone can be defined, it's the way Lewis said, "and a better teammate," with regret lacing his voice knowing Nico was listening as a way of acknowledging the hurt was mutual after all these years, it's the way Lewis rarely calls anyone his friend but called Nico his best friend and then stopped saying his name at all when he got hurt, it's the way shutting out your childhood best friend means suppressing your inner child who never stops loving them. It's the way hating them is never an option because hate requires the absence of love but hurt can co-exist with said love. The reason everyone still talks about Brocedes is that we all know what it feels like to lose someone knowing it can never be the same again. Brocedes was never a simple rivalry, it was the embodiment of what it means to get hurt.

Tumblr media
‘’So you’re telling me you and Charles have been sneaking around for half a year now?’’ Lola, your best friend, just finished her pizza, watching and listening how you poured your heart out about the Ferrari driver. You simply nodded in response, playing with the – now cold – slice of pizza on the table in front of you. ‘’And why exactly did you tell him to leave? I mean, come on y/n, you obviously have feelings for him as well, I know you.’’
‘’That’s exactly the problem, Lo, I have feelings for him, but we can not be together.’’
‘’Aren’t you leaving Alpha Tauri next season?’’ She asked, her eyebrow raising as she sipped the diet coke she brought along with the pizza. You sighed, heavily. It was true, you and your manager had some meetings with different teams, other teams than Alpha Tauri, because who didn’t want the first woman in F1 in their team? Exactly.
‘’Yeah, but…’’ ‘’No, y/n, no buts, you like him, for gods sake, go for him, at least tell him how you feel.’’ Yeah, easier said than done.
You wanted to tell him, you wanted to be with him, but it almost felt like a Romeo and Juliet kind of story. You liked each other, hell you loved each other, but both sides you were on didn’t allow the two of you to actually be together. You at the blue side, him at the red side.
‘’I did have a meeting with Ferrari as well.’’ You mumbled to your friend, watching as her eyes widened, the pizza almost dropping to the floor. ‘’You what now?’’ She gasped.
The meetings you had with Ferrari actually were the ones you looked forward to the most, but also dreaded the most, because this meant avoiding Charles, lying to him, hiding things from him. The truth is, Ferrari wanted you, Carlos going back to McLaren to replace Daniel, who would find his way back to RedBull. However, you couldn’t tell Charles, because of the contracts, because of the agreements you made with the teams.
‘’I swear if you tell anyone-‘’ ‘’Don’t worry, don’t worry, your secret is safe with me.’’ Your friend smiled after you just told her your new racing suit for next season had the same color as Charles’. Yes, you were going to be his teammate.
‘’So that’s why you can’t tell him? Because of the contract.’’ Your friend sighed, making you nod in response. ‘’Yeah, if I tell him they will reconsider the contract, I need to be able to keep secrets in this team, it’s almost like a test.’’
‘’A bloody hard one…’’
And it was a hard one, one in which reality hit almost harder than one of your biggest crashes.
-
‘’Red flag, red flag, keep the delta positive, delta positive.’’ Charles heard his race engineer over the radio, his heart beating out of his chest the moment he heard it, he saw it.
‘’Y/n, are you okay? y/n, let me know if you’re okay, the medical car is on their way, medical car on their way.’’
Abu Dhabi, November 20th, 2022.
‘’And welcome, to the final race of the season, welcome, to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix!’’ The commentators were everywhere, people cheering, screaming, a lot of energy coming from this place.
The race itself however, was less good, it was bad, really bad. You qualified P8, which was okay, but not the best so far. Charles qualified even worse, P11. Your start was okay, Charles’ start was amazing. But once the final laps approached, things got out of hand. You tried to overtake Lance Stroll, who was defending like his life depended on it. It was a battle for the final point.
The defending got a little too rough the moment you were wheel to wheel, side to side as you took the outside, while Lance took the inside. His car took the wrong route, sending you into the barriers with a speed over 150 miles an hour. Charles saw it happening, since he was about to lap the both of you.
‘’Red flag, red flag, keep the delta positive, delta positive.’’
‘’Is she okay? That was y/n, wasn’t it? Fucking hell.’’ Charles kept talking, nervously, looking into his mirrors to see the Aston Martin of Lance slowly driving behind him, the Alpha Tauri you were in, completely into the barriers, the only thing sticking out was the broken front wing.
‘’Affirm, that was y/n, no information on it yet, I’ll keep you updated.’’
‘’Fuck me, fuck! She needs to be okay, that was a big one, for fucks sake!’’ It felt like his whole word collapsed, right in front of his eyes, the way you were making the move, the smart move. And then, the way Lance lost control of his car, sending you straight into the barriers.
‘’Okay, y/n is okay, she got out of the car, but is headed to the hospital for checkups.’’
He wanted to come along, he wanted to make sure you were okay, but he couldn’t. He couldn’t because reality is, the two of you hadn’t spoken in days, weeks, months. After that one time in the hotel room, you lost contact and never spoke again.
He missed you, like crazy, and so did you, because there was more than just friends between the two of you, more than just friends with benefits, there was love, true love, from both sides.
The moment he saw you in that hospital bed, bruises covering your arms, bandages on your ribs, a sob left his mouth, waking you up after the nap you just had.
‘’Charles?’’ Your voice was raspy, dry, soft, fragile, it matching the way you looked right now. ‘’y/n, please, don’t say a thing.’’ He mumbled, feet moving into your direction, his hand instantly reaching for yours.
‘’You scared the shit out of me.’’ He continued, playing with the fingers on your right hand, a sigh escaping his lips. ‘’I’m so glad you’re okay, so so glad…’’ He sighed.
Mattia talked to him, mostly about the results of this year, but also about next year. Charles had asked him if they found a new driver yet, because he knew Carlos was leaving Ferrari, going back to his former team, McLaren. Mattia decided that, since you were in the hospital, it was time to tell him.
‘’You’re going to be my teammate.’’ He whispered after a long silence between the two of you, your hands not leaving each other’s. You instantly looked up into his eyes, blinking twice to make sure you weren’t hallucinating.
‘’What?’’
‘’My teammate, you’ll be my teammate.’’ He says again, eyes meeting yours. You swallowed thickly, a sigh escaping your lips. ‘’Who told you?’’ ‘’Mattia.’’ ‘’Oh…’’
‘’I know you couldn’t tell me, he explained it to me.’’ He mumbles, sighing. ‘’I don’t want to hurt your head too much now, sorry, we can talk about it another time, okay?’’ He kindly suggested, a weak smile appearing on your lips at how sweet he was again. You missed him, so freaking much.
That day in the hospital changed your entire life, he had you back, and you couldn’t stay away from him anymore. You were back together, this time not just as friends, but as lovers.
1 year later
‘’Well well, look who we have here, the grids favorite couple.’’
‘’Hello to you too, Carlos.’’ You shot the old Ferrari driver a smile, stepping closer to Charles as his arm was wrapped around your waist in an attempt to hold you even closer to him than before.
‘’How was your holiday?’’ The Spaniard asked the Monegasque, walking with the two of you towards the press conference room. ‘’It was absolutely amazing, aside from the fact I finally got her to say yes.’’ He smirked, intertwining your hand with his.
‘’Really? You’re finally moving in together?’’ Carlos smiled, laughing as he patted Charles’ back the moment you rolled your eyes in a playful way.
‘’How could I say no after you practically begged me. You know he gave me a whole paragraph of reasons why I should move in with him? He even mentioned the climate.’’ You all laughed, Carlos shaking his head at his former team mate. ‘’Dude, really?’’ He chuckled.
‘’What? It’s warmer at my place than it is at hers.’’ He says, squeezing your hip as you all waited outside the press conference room.
‘’Charles, we freaking both lived in Monaco!’’
All with all, things turned out to be more than perfect. The way you broke the news about your relationship was a way to never forget.
Monaco, May 28th, 2023.
‘’And for the first time in his career, Charles Leclerc wins his home Grand Prix, Ferrari getting a 1-2 in Monaco!’’
He won, the both of you won, the way you were able to work together to get this amazing result, was one of many pro’s about your relationship, the connection you had, the communication you had, everything was perfect.
Jumping out of the cars, hugging your team, hugging each other, going backstage and preparing for the podium ceremony, something the two of you had done more than once this season. And you were hoping to achieve this many more times this season.
‘’Let’s make it one victory to never forget, shall we?’’ Charles rested his hand on your lower back, giving you a gentle push to the podium, on which you received your trophy for the Monaco GP.
Charles came some seconds later, and after the national anthem, Charles’ anthem, he put his trophy down, grabbed the champagne bottle and poured it all over you, you doing the exact same thing to him. One sip, which was enough for the both of you. You stood on the top stage of the podium, arms wrapped around each other as the pictures were taken.
‘’I love you.’’ He whispered in your ear, making you turn your head to look at him with a smile. ‘’I love you too.’’ You whispered back, your smile only growing wider when his lips met yours. People were cheering, screaming, clapping, flashes were lighting up the entire sky, the amount of pictures taken of that first public kiss, were more than all races held in the history of Formula One.
‘’I’m so glad I broke our deal.’’ He whispered, making you laugh before pressing your lips against his one more time. “What deal?” You hummed, his hand moving up to cup your cheek. “Rule number one. Don’t get feelings.” He whispered, slowly pulling away from your lips which tasted like champagne.
“I broke that deal before we even made it…” Yeah, madly in love… from the very first moment.

Brocedes time line for a very patient anon
Lewis quotes in orange, Nico quotes in pink, everyone else is blue.
okay first some background knowledge:
Nico is rich as fuck. only child, born in Germany, brought up in Monaco. son of world champion Keke Rosberg
Lewis was born on a council estate in Stevenage and his dad had to work multiple jobs for him to start karting
Honestly I think the difference in their backgrounds is one of the things that pushed them together, they were both isolated from the rest of the kids, but I’m keeping this purely facts rather than speculation.
2000
They’re both 15 years old and are karting teammates for MBB (Mercedes Benz McLaren) in Formula A
Robert Kubica: “there was always competition. But they didn’t fight. It was friendly competition. There was always laughing afterwards.” // “they would even have races to eat pizza”
They often shared hotel rooms at the races which was a “scene of many wrestling matches between them”
Dino Chiesa (their karting boss) – “many times I was called by reception about some problem in the room. It might be noise, or they might have broken something. They would never sleep so they were always tired the next morning
“they both liked ice cream so much, particularly vanilla. During the night they wanted to eat ice cream always, so I had to go out everywhere to find some and keep them happy”
Lewis would often persuade Nico to buy him sweets
They would have competitions over LITERALLY EVERYTHING
Lewis: “we always had great competition whether on the racetrack or computer games or playing football”
“probably the first bit of competition we had was when Nico used to ride a unicycle everywhere so I thought, ‘I’ve got to learn how to ride this unicycle. Ive got to be better than him.’ I spent all my time outside the go-kart learning to ride this unicycle”
Apparently it only took Lewis 2 hours to teach himself how to do it
In maybe 2013 ish (when they were still friends) Lewis reflected with– “I have never laughed so much than when we were racing together. Nico was kicking everyone’s butt at that time. We had so great races together and built a great relationship”
“we were just arriving and enjoying go-karts and eating pizzas every weekend, fighting all the time and just having fun, whereas now it’s all business.”
many times they would talk about what they would do when they got to f1, made plans hoping to be teammates and become world champions together.
“Nico would say ‘when I’m in formula one’ and for me it was always ‘if I ever get to formula one’. Because obviously Nico’s dad was a formula 1 driver- he knew he was going to make it.”
F1
Nico joined f1 in 2006 with williams, Lewis 2007 with McLaren. And man I WISH I knew what went down with this two when Lewis nearly one his rookie season (missing out by one point to mr fernando alonso) and then WON THE CHAMPIONSHIP in his SECOND SEASON (again by one point thank you mr alonso)
2008 Australia
Nicos gets his first podium, and ofc Lewis is there (he won it) and they are jumping around in the cool down room. Just, two kids who are literally living the one thing they have spent their whole lives dreaming about together. Lewis won the championship that year and oh wow I can only imagine their celebrations together.
Tumblr media
2013
They’re teammates in Mercedes!!!
Nico: “every other day there are moments or things that pop up and I can smirk and thing, ‘that’s exactly the same as it was 15 years ago’”
2013 Malaysian Grand Prix gets an honourable mention. This is the race with red bulls good old multi 21 but merc also had their own team orders, stopping nico from fighting for his first merc podium, but Lewis disagreed with it so it didn’t really spark that much tension between them- more the team.
2014
the start of the turbo-hybrid era so y’all know this was good in terms of performance.
2014 Bahrain Grand Prix
They were both fighting for the win and had a collision which prompted a “mock fight” in parc ferme after the race (which I really hope there’s a video of).
Turns out, Nico won because he had used engine modes banned by Mercedes to get a power advantage in the closing laps. which kinda pissed Lewis off
2014 Spanish Grand Prix
Lewis’ fourth win in a row and took lead in the championship. They were fighting till literally the last second and Lewis crossed the line 0.6 seconds ahead of Nico, who says he could have passed him with one more lap.
Lewis defended using the same banned engine modes that Nico had used in Bahrain. Yeah.
2014 Monaco Grand Prix
This is IT. This is peak petty bitch. This is the one people still cry about.
It’s the end of Q3, both of them are out on a lap, Nico ahead of lewis. Nico’s already on provisional pole but Lewis is pretty close.
And then,, Nico just,, parks his car?? He says he made a mistake but the guy doesn’t even crash he straight up just,, rolls to a stop into a slip road. So the yellow flags come out forcing Lewis to abort a lap that was in the makings of pole.
The stewards say it was a-okay but Lewis was convinced it was intentional (and let’s be honest, yeah it probably was) and he even claimed that merc’s data proved it. (low key surprised he didn’t just tweet out the telemetry but I guess he got a stern telling off from mclaren last time)
But *this* is when Lewis tells the world that they aren’t friends anymore. An iconic interview.
Nico then wins the race too, ending Lewis’s four win streak and putting Nico in the lead of the championship.
2014 Hungarian Grand Prix
Lewis has an engine failure in quali meaning he starts from the pit lane, but he does good to make his way up the pack but THEN there’s a safety car which puts him ahead of Nico but on a different strategy.
Nico asks if Lewis can let him past as he needs to pit again before the end of the race, which will give him the place back anyways. Lewis straight up refuses, he’s on a role here. He started from last, and Nico started from pole, why should he slow down to let his title rival through.
Mercedes strongly suggest that his blocking fucked up Nicos race but Niki Lauda is on Lewis’ side so he doesn’t get punished (We stan a supportive father figure) even though he did blatantly refuse to be a team player.
And guys, this is the last race before the summer break so you know Nico was left seething for four weeks.
2014 Belgian Grand Prix
Second lap, Nico attempts a clumsy move and there’s contact, giving Hamilton a puncture and knocking him out of the race.
There’s a lot of controversy but basically it turns out he crashed with him intentionally, not backing out of the corner to “prove a point”. Nico ended up finishing second but was punished by the team, forced to apologise, and even booed on the podium.
2014 Abu Dhabi
For some reason it ran for double points?? The first time in History??? But idk???
Lewis had a perfect start and went on to win it and take the title, Nico had a problem and was told to retire the car but he kept going anyway and finished 14th. Nico went into the cool down room to congratulate Lewis on the championship win, which. cute.
Lewis claimed his second championship. Which not only was huge because of the inter team rivalry, but also because of the large gap between his first win. This guy had lost out on winning the championship in his ROOKIE season by ONE POINT, and then WON it in his SECOND season, and then there was like a FIVE YEAR gap before he won it again.
Tumblr media
2015
Damnnn this car was fiiiinneeeeeee.
They do more laps in testing than any other car AND do it on a single power unit. And then. Australia. They take a one-two THIRTY FOUR seconds ahead of the third place Ferrari.
2015 Chinese Grand Prix
Nico is second in a one-two but claims that Lewis kept backing him up into Seb, trying to compromise his race (and help out his boyfriend).
Lewis gave zero shits: "It's not my job to look after Nico's race, it's my job to manage the car and bring the car home as healthy and as fast as possible. That's what I did."
2015 U.S. Grand Prix
If Lewis wins here he could also claim the title with three races to spare (you have to remember back then the title fight often went up to the last race so this was pretty cool)
Lewis very aggressively forced Rosberg wide at Turn 1 to claim the lead, and then there was some sexy fighting between the Mercs and Redbull all race. Nico led in the closing stages but made a mistake, running deep into a corner and letting Lewis past with only a handful of laps to go.
Nico finished P2 and had not only lost the race but the championship title. Nico was fuming, saying Lewis’ move at the start was “one step too far”.
This is the infamous cap throw in the cool down room. Lewis throws Nico his P2 hat, Nico straight up yeets it back at him. I tear up just thinking about it. They grow up so fast.
Tumblr media
2016
Nico had came so close to winning and I guess this was just, the last straw. All or nothing. This year he literally gave it everything he had. Lewis and him stopped speaking, Nico gave up literally the rest of his life and even stopped sleeping in the same bed as his wife and taking care of his kids, instead spending every moment trying to get into Lewis’ head. Honestly, I think he might be the only one that could beat Lewis. Just because he knew him *so well*. He literally threw away like 16 years of friendship. But also it’s like, he had to be world champion. He *had to*. His dad was champion and his whole life he’s been preparing to win it too. Tough luck that he raced in the same era as Mr. Best Driver The Sport Has Ever Seen.
Nico won the last few races of 2015, and the first four races of 2016. Lewis had a couple car problems and Nico had a good lead on him in the championship.
2016 Spanish Grand Prix
Gentlemen. A short view back to the past. Nico had made a switch error on the formation lap causing the car to go into the wrong engine mode. So he was running a lot slower than Lewis, who was fighting to claim back the lead.
Nico closed the door to keep him back, and Lewis lost control on the grass, and spins into Nico and taking them both out of the race in the first lap. This is probably one of the most iconic crashes. I’m pretty sure there’s a clip of this somewhere in black and white with the titanic music over the top.
Niki Lauda blamed this one on Lewis (I guess even a supportive dad has to be critical sometimes) "Lewis is too aggressive. It is stupid, we could've won this race".
2016 Austrian Grand Prix
Nico had been struggling with a brake issue all race but was still on the way to win it. But in the last lap Lewis had caught him up and gone in for the overtake.
Typical Nico not taking any shit, refusing to be the guy that backs out and they collide. Lewis took the win and a damaged Nico dropped to fourth. From first. In the last lap.
Both of them blamed each other and tired dad team boss Toto Wolff threatened team orders in future races.
The stewards blamed Nico for the incident, issuing him two penalty points for failing to allow "racing room" and causing a collision.
2016 Abu Dhabi
In the final laps of the race, Lewis ignored team-orders from his race engineer and the technical director.
He deliberately slowed and backed Nico into the pack hoping they overtake him, and there would be enough of a points difference to win the title.
Nico finished second and won the title by five points.
And then,,, Nico announced a surprise retirement during the FIA prize giving ceremony.
Lewis’ response:
"This is the first time he's won in 18 years, hence why it was not a surprise that he decided to stop.” (We stan a petty king)
“But he's also got a family to focus on and probably wants to have more children. Formula One takes up so much of your time."
“In terms of missing the rivalry, of course because we started karting when we were 13 and we would always talk about being champions. When I joined this team, Nico was there, which was something we spoke about when we were kids. So it's going to be very, very strange, and, for sure, it will be sad to not have him in the team next year."
And now they are kind of on speaking terms but not really, they are both pretty private but I think they are at the ‘awkward small talk when we run into each other at the supermarket’ stage of the break up.
