in a big worldbuilding mood rn, so we'll do the protagonist of the book i'm drafting as inspiration hits (milo, a fledgling wielder of the metaphysical arcana and overall nerd)
His go-to bar drink is an amaretto sour, as it's definitely on the sweeter side and it isn't exactly outlandish. He doesn't want to stand out in public for ordering something too over the top or boring (unless it's a tavern that doesn't carry spirits, Milo doesn't drink ale as it makes his stomach act up).
Milo is clean - almost obsessively so - and takes great pride in making sure the physical features at least somewhat within his control (hair, beard, skin) are taken care of. The Moreau family garden is full of plants - such as Azurian arum, juniper, and Amaranthine bean - that when processed correctly, works wonders for maintaining the skin. This is also partially because Milo underwent a severe bout of acne during his middle teenage years that permanently scarred the skin on his cheeks, nose, back, and forehead - and he will do anything in his power to prevent it from reoccurring.
His disposable income almost entirely goes towards the purchase and acquisitions of new Grimoire esoterica - books discussing and teaching the intricacies of the Metaphysical Arcana. However, due to his current socioeconomic/geographic status, he's unable to do more than place one order with Hubert (owner of the town's sole bookshop, and the only person beyond his family in Boisseaux that he still interacts with) in a given calendar year.
As of the beginning of the written narrative, the only scars Milo possesses are acne scars across his face and body. However, this is very much subject to change : )
Milo last cried about a week prior to the beginning of the narrative, out of sheer frustration. There was a minute detail he missed in his translation of the book he found deep in the Moreau family basement, and it fucked up the valid interpretation of that entire chapter. It took him five days to fully repair all issues that were created by that misinterpretation.
He is an only child. Milo supposedly has cousins, but they all skipped town before he was even born out of sheer disdain for the locale.
He is clad in a pair of rather tattered boots of dark brown leather that have seen nearly fifty years of wear and tear, as they were his father's before him. Milo currently doesn't see a reason to send them to the cobbler's, as he doesn't leave the house enough to need functional boots.
In opposition to the cleanliness of his self, Milo's bedroom at the Moreau home is incredibly scattered and disorganized. It's covered with open books, papers, even ink spatters here and there from where his clumsiness got the best of him.
His favorite holiday is easily that of Meditatio, the major holiday of Astaphaios (the Knowing Watcher, She Who Sees, the Goddess of Knowledge and Sight). It marks the midpoint of the first month, where the moon shines brightest amidst the early days of spring. It is considered a day of thoughtful introspection, reflecting upon what brought you to your current state in life.
An object he always carries with him is the antique wooden staff that has been passed through the Moreau family for generations (or, at least, since they settled in the lakeside village of Boisseaux). It's quite weathered, and inscribed with a fascinating pattern that Milo has never been quite able to decipher.
So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.)  Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.
If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:
What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)
What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)
Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)
Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)
What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)

Meditation and Spirituality: Exploring Different Cultural Practices
Meditation is a practice that transcends cultural and religious boundaries, offering profound spiritual benefits to practitioners worldwide. While the techniques and purposes of Best Meditation Center In Pokhara can vary widely across different traditions, the core objective remains similar: to attain a state of inner peace, heightened awareness, and a deeper connection with the divine or the self. This article explores the spiritual aspects of meditation in Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, and other spiritual traditions, highlighting the unique elements and commonalities that unite them.
Buddhism
Meditation in Buddhism is central to its practice and philosophy, aiming to cultivate mindfulness, concentration, and insight. There are two primary types of Buddhist meditation:
Samatha (Calm Abiding)
This practice focuses on developing concentration through mindfulness of breathing or other objects of meditation. The goal is to achieve a tranquil mind, free from distractions and agitation.
Vipassana (Insight)
Vipassana meditation involves observing the impermanent nature of all phenomena to gain deep insight into the nature of reality. It encourages the practitioner to develop a clear understanding of the Three Marks of Existence: impermanence, suffering, and non-self.
Buddhist meditation practices often include chanting, visualization, and prostration, with an emphasis on ethical conduct and mental discipline as essential components of spiritual growth.
Hinduism
Tumblr media
Dhyan (Meditative Absorption)
Dhyan involves deep concentration on a single point of focus, such as a deity, mantra, or the breath. The aim is to transcend the ordinary mind and experience spiritual ecstasy or union with the divine.
Mantra Meditation
This practice involves the repetitive chanting of sacred sounds or phrases, such as "Om" or "Hare Krishna." Mantras are believed to have spiritual power and aid in purifying the mind and body.
Kundalini Meditation
Focuses on awakening the dormant spiritual energy (Kundalini) located at the base of the spine. Through practices like breath control (Pranayama) and visualization, practitioners aim to raise this energy through the chakras to achieve spiritual enlightenment.
Hindu meditation practices are often accompanied by rituals, devotional worship (Bhakti), and adherence to ethical principles outlined in texts like the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads.
Christianity
Meditation in Christianity is often contemplative, aimed at deepening one's relationship with God and experiencing divine presence. Key practices include:
Contemplative Prayer
This silent prayer practice involves focusing on a word or phrase that signifies God's presence. It aims to still the mind and open the heart to God's love and guidance.
Lectio Divina (Divine Reading)
A meditative approach to reading the Bible, involving four stages: reading (Lectio), meditation (Meditatio), prayer (Oratio), and contemplation (Contemplatio). This practice seeks to foster a deeper understanding of Scripture and its application to one's life.
The Jesus Prayer
A repetitive prayer practice, commonly used in Eastern Orthodox Christianity, involving the repetition of the phrase "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner." This prayer helps cultivate humility, repentance, and continuous remembrance of God's presence.
Christian meditation often incorporates elements of silence, reflection, and a focus on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, encouraging a transformative encounter with the divine.
Other Spiritual Traditions
Sufism (Islamic Mysticism)
Sufi meditation practices, such as Dhikr (remembrance of God), involve the repetitive chanting of God's names or attributes. Sufis also engage in practices like Sama (listening to spiritual music) and Whirling (a form of meditative dance) to achieve spiritual ecstasy and union with the divine.
Taoism
Taoist meditation focuses on aligning with the Tao (the Way), cultivating inner peace, and harmonizing with nature. Techniques include breath meditation (Zuòwàng), visualization, and Qi Gong, which involve the cultivation and circulation of life energy (Qi).
Indigenous Traditions
Many indigenous cultures incorporate meditation-like practices in their spiritual rituals. These may involve vision quests, shamanic journeys, and communal ceremonies aimed at connecting with ancestral spirits and the natural world.
Commonalities Across Traditions
Despite the diverse methods and objectives, several commonalities unite these spiritual meditation practices:
Focus and Concentration
Almost all traditions emphasize the importance of focusing the mind, whether on the breath, a mantra, a sacred text, or a divine image.
Inner Peace and Stillness
The goal of achieving a state of inner calm and tranquility is universal across different meditation practices.
Ethical and Moral Conduct
Many traditions stress the importance of living a virtuous life as a foundation for effective meditation. Ethical conduct helps to cultivate a mind that is conducive to deep meditation.
Connection with the Divine or Higher Self
Meditation is often seen as a way to deepen one's relationship with the divine, attain spiritual insights, or realize the true nature of the self.
Transformative Experience
Meditation is regarded as a transformative practice that can lead to profound personal and spiritual growth, helping practitioners develop qualities such as compassion, wisdom, and humility.
Conclusion
Meditation is a universal practice that transcends cultural and religious boundaries, offering profound spiritual benefits to practitioners around the world. Whether it's through the mindfulness of Buddhism, the devotional practices of Hinduism, the contemplative prayers of Christianity, or the mystical traditions of Sufism and Taoism, meditation serves as a powerful tool for attaining inner peace, heightened awareness, and a deeper connection with the divine. By exploring and embracing the unique elements and commonalities of these practices, individuals can enrich their spiritual journey and cultivate a more harmonious and enlightened life.

FAT to FIT for healthy heart with Dr. Ameet Oswal | Best Cardiologist & Cardiac Surgeons in Bangalore.
It’s long been known that obesity is more likely to lead to conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes, which in turn can lead to heart disease. Heart’s health is affected by being overweight. This important organ must work harder to pump blood as a result, other health issues like diabetes and lung troubles are also brought on by it. It also triggers inflammatory processes that can damage the cardiovascular system and can lead to structural or functional changes in the heart itself. Other medical disorders are linked to an elevated cardiovascular risk (hypertension, diabetes, insulin resistance, and sleep apnea syndrome). Atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease are both significantly impacted by obesity. Best Cardiologist & Cardiac Surgeons in Bangalore Dr Ameet oswal say we should be more careful about our heart.
Tumblr media
Some of the health problems that an obese person may develop are:
Blood Pressure: Obesity leads to larger blood volumes compared to people with normal weight range. Heart needs to pump higher amount of blood which in turn puts much pressure on the hearts functioning leading to damages.
Type 2 diabetes: The body insulin used to control blood sugar levels are affected by obesity which raises the risk of insulin resistance and diabetes.
Heart Disease and Stroke: Obesity increases the risk of high blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol levels. Both condition leads to heart disease or stroke more likely.
Osteoarthritis: Obesity increases the stress on the joints that bear the weight of the body and also stimulates inflammation in the body. These factors leads to complications such as osteoarthritis.
Sleep Apnea: Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder caused due to obesity. It can cause a person to snore heavily and stop breathing briefly during sleep. Sleep apnea can cause daytime sleepiness and increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, this is what Heart doctor in Bangalore says about your sleep.
Obesity and Risk of Heart Issues
Best Cardiologist & Cardiac Surgeons in Bangalore Dr Ameet oswal say we should be more careful about our heart. Increased body fat may also be a direct cause of the following heart-related changes:
Atherosclerosis
Enlargement of the left atrium (swelling of the left side of your heart).
Hypertrophy of the left ventricle (LVH).
Risk of having an irregular heartbeat is also increased by obesity (atrial fibrillation). Blood clots caused due to this can result in strokes, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.
Heart diseases caused due to obesity can be a leading cause of death, though not inevitable.
Some of the ways to reduce the risk of it are:
Stop Smoking: The heart and blood arteries can be harmed by the chemicals in cigarettes. Due to smoking the heart needs to pump harder to supply adequate oxygen to the body and brain, nicotine causes the blood’s oxygen content to decrease, which raises blood pressure and heart rate. Avoiding the use tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco, is one of the finest things to do for the heart.
Physical Exercise: Regular exercise can reduce the risk of developing heart disease; weight can be controlled by exercise. Additionally, it lowers the risk of acquiring additional illnesses including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes that could strain the heart.
Heart – healthy diet: A nutritious diet can lower the risk of type 2 diabetes, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and protect the heart. An eating regimen for heart health includes vegetables and fruits, beans, whole grains, lean meats and fish, low fat, and fat free dairy foods etc. Saturated and processed foods need to be avoided in a greater level to stay away from the risk of heart problems.
Reduce stress: Some people use harmful coping mechanisms to deal with stress, such as binge eating, drinking excessively, or smoking. Your health can be enhanced by finding more effective stress-reduction techniques, such as exercise, relaxation techniques, or meditation.
Good Sleep: Lack of sleep increases the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, heart attacks, diabetes, and depression in individuals. Adults typically require at least seven hours of sleep per night. Make getting enough sleep a top priority

Music has many wonderful benefits for stress management and overall health. It can help you calm your physiology without making a conscious effort, and that can alleviate stress from your mind. Music can also lift your mood, slow your breathing, and create other stress-inducing changes.
Meditation is also one of the most popular stress management strategies for good reason—it brings short-term benefits like a calm mind and body, and it can build resilience toward stress over time. Combining music with meditation can deepen the positive effects of both, and bring you greater stress relief.

Pope Benedict XVI on Prayer, Scripture, and the Mysteries of God
In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI wrote Verbum Domini, “On the Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church” after a meeting of many bishops from around the world that discussed the role of Scripture ought to play our spiritual lives. Here is an excerpt from the  section on how to pray with the Scriptures.
The prayerful reading of sacred Scripture and “lectio divina” [divine reading]
86. The word of God is at the basis of all authentic Christian spirituality. The [Second Vatican Council’s] Dogmatic Constitution Dei Verbum says: “Let the faithful go gladly to the sacred text itself, whether in the sacred liturgy, which is full of the divine words, or in devout reading, or in such suitable exercises and various other helps which, with the approval and guidance of the pastors of the Church, are happily spreading everywhere in our day. Let them remember, however, that prayer should accompany the reading of sacred Scripture”. The Church Fathers always recommended approaching the Scripture in dialogue with God. As Saint Augustine puts it: “Your prayer is the word you speak to God. When you read the Bible, God speaks to you; when you pray, you speak to God”. Origen, one of the great masters of this way of reading the Bible, maintains that understanding Scripture demands, even more than study, closeness to Christ and prayer. Origen was convinced, in fact, that the best way to know God is through love, and that there can be no authentic scientia Christi [knowledge of Christ] apart from growth in his love. In his Letter to Gregory, the great Alexandrian theologian gave this advice: “Devote yourself to the lectio of the divine Scriptures; apply yourself to this with perseverance. Do your reading with the intent of believing in and pleasing God. If during the lectio you encounter a closed door, knock and it will be opened to you by that guardian of whom Jesus said, ‘The gatekeeper will open it for him’. By applying yourself in this way to lectio divina, search diligently and with unshakable trust in God for the meaning of the divine Scriptures, which is hidden in great fullness within. You ought not, however, to be satisfied merely with knocking and seeking: to understand the things of God, what is absolutely necessary is oratio [prayer]...” Prayerful reading, personal and communal, prepares for, accompanies and deepens what the Church celebrates when she proclaims the word at Mass...
  87. Lectio divina [as a traditional method of reading Scripture] is truly capable of opening up to the faithful the treasures of God’s word, but also of bringing about an encounter with Christ, the living word of God. I would like here to review the basic steps of this procedure. It opens with the reading (lectio) of a text, which leads to a desire to understand its true content: what does the biblical text say in itself? Without this, there is always a risk that the text will become a pretext for never moving beyond our own ideas. Next comes meditation (meditatio), which asks: what does the biblical text say to us? Here, each person, individually but also as a member of the community, must let himself or herself be moved and challenged. Following this comes prayer (oratio), which asks the question: what do we say to the Lord in response to his word? Prayer, as petition, intercession, thanksgiving and praise, is the primary way by which the word transforms us. Finally, lectio divina concludes with contemplation (contemplatio), during which we take up, as a gift from God, his own way of seeing and judging reality, and ask ourselves what conversion of mind, heart and life is the Lord asking of us? In the Letter to the Romans, Saint Paul tells us: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect” (12:2). Contemplation aims at creating within us a truly wise and discerning vision of reality, as God sees it, and at forming within us “the mind of Christ” (1 Cor 2:16). The word of God appears here as a criterion for discernment... We do well also to remember that the process of lectio divina is not concluded until it arrives at action (actio), which moves the believer to make his or her life a gift for others in charity.
We find the supreme synthesis and fulfilment of this process in the Mother of God, for she “kept all these things, pondering them in her heart” (Lk 2:19; cf. 2:51...The  reading of the word of God sustains us on our journey of penance and conversion, enables us to deepen our sense of belonging to the Church, and helps us to grow in familiarity with God. As Saint Ambrose puts it, “When we take up the sacred Scriptures in faith and read them with the Church, we walk once more with God in the Garden”.

Spock disliked the arrival of new crew memebers.
Receiving a new batch of bright-eyed over-eager academy students who were desperate to impress each other and the officers only meant one thing for him. Racial comments. Whether it was mockery of his physiological traits, or testing the limits of his emotional control, attempting to praise him with a series of alarmingly specist microagressions, or, now, accusing him of being a Romulan spy, every fresh academy graduate had a strong opinion on Starfleet's first Vulcan.
But it was his duty as first officer to greet and assign jobs to the batch of bewildered young ensigns. So he would perform that duty to the best of his ability. He had Checkov and Scotty as a backup if anything went wrong.
So he strode into the room just as the last of the new crew was disembarking the shuttle. They were wandering around aimlessly, looking at the Enterprise as though she we're the first space vessel they'd ever seen, gaping like a school of drugged fish.
He triggered the boatswain's whistle. They immediately scurried into neat rows, facing forwards. He heard the whispers start immediately. That was to be expected.
And then, in a voice just loud enough to be heard but just quiet encough to demand all of their focus, he began to speak.
"You have been assigned to duty aboard the USS Starship Enterprise, under Captain James Tiberius Kirk, two years, three months, and six days into her five year mission to expand the federations understanding of the universe. This is many of your first assignment. The captain wishes me to extend his welcome and his wish that you all enjoy your duty here and perform to the best of your abilities. I will now read off your names. When you are called, you will step forward, say 'aye' to indicate your presence, then proceed to my left to emsign Checkov, who will inform you of your duty schedule, then proceed to my right to Mister Scott who will inform you of your bunking assignment. Once you have all been assigned, Checkov will lead you to the med bay for your physical, then you will be free to do as you please untill nightfall. Your duty begins promptly at 7am tomorrow. Ship sunrise is at 0600 hours Ship sunset is at 2030 hours."
The sea of faces nodded. Then Spock began listing off names alphabetically, observing as each ensign made his way to Pavel for assignment. Some scurried. Spock didn't the scurriers, they were usually eager to please and obedient, if not the brightest. Some walked as if a daze. Those never lasted long. Some swaggered, shooting grins at their friends. Those were never a good sign, and Spock identified the four most likely to cause trouble so that he could warn their commanding officers in advance. And a very small number moved efficiently, clear eyed and looking straight ahead. Spock tended to favor those.
He had a slight shock, though, towards the end of the list. He even paused the steady rhythm of names for .17 seconds in his surprise. His heart dropped.
"Ensign T'Rolak"
A Vulcan.
The boy that stepped forward was all Vulcan, too. His muslces were leaner and denser than Spocks. His ears and brows more angular. His hair perfectly flat and shiny. His facial plate pointier and more slanted.
A real, full blooded Vulcan. There was another Vulcan aboard.
It brought to mind a few of the swear words he'd picked up in his time among the humans.
Were Spock human and prone to such emotional expressions, he could easily say that he destested and feared most other Vulcans. It was the simple product of a lifetime of harassment and specist hatred. He had never been Vulcan enough for them. Eventually he stopped trying.
Still, despite knowing the logical origins of these thoughts, Spock couldn't shake the feeling of invasion. The Enterprise was his safe place. His home. One place h wasn't asked to be more human or more Vulcan. And now it had been invaded by another of his kind.
He shoved the thoughts down. He would have to process and tame them in later meditation. Then he finished the list and walked out as quickly as would be appropriate.
After duty that night, he sat alone in the corner of the mess, head burried in his pad, reading a recently published article on theoretical husbandry, struggling to contain a set of derisive scoffs. The man's theory was sound, but his methods, in practice, we're unsustainable for colonies given the amount of ship transport room they were usually allotted. That was the problem with his species. No sense of reality.
He could see the new ensigns dining loudly halfway across the room. They seemed content to leave him alone for now....but he was still waiting for the few specists to show their true colors. There were always a few.
@firstofficerhobgoblin
The chattering of various ensigns filled the small shuttle , a young vulcan sat in a corner . With a PADD held closely to his face his eyes darted back and forth over the material . His father had just published a new paper on the theoritical husbandry of a earth plant which retained larger amounts of water than that of it’s vulcan counterpart.
“Please prepare to disembark the shuttle , docking procedures now in operation. ”
The cool voice of the captain called out . He sat up straight , placing the PADD in his dufflebag filled with various items . With a soft swoosh the craft landed in the cargo bay of the enterprise , the crown jewel of the fleet . T'Rolak stood up noting the excited chatter amongst his fellow passengers .
“Do you think we’ll see the captain and commander themselves? ” one crew member whispered as they began to file out .
