For demigods, Friday was going great. It was just before Capture the Flag when Nico had followed Will into the infirmary to tidy it up. They both knew, especially with the skills those had learned from the Giant War a few weeks ago, people could fight brutally and Will might be stuck there for a while.

As Nico was flipping through the pages of Lou Ellen’s file - mostly potions-gone-wrong related injuries, screams erupted from down the hill, and Cecil Markowitz came barreling into the infirmary.

He was coated in water, a few cuts on his arms and a bite that looked like it came from a fish. Something wasn’t right. Something big wasn’t right.

“It...It’s Percy!” Cecil winced, waving his hands frantically as he talked. “He’s destroying the camp, summoning everything from the ocean!”

Will took Cecil by the shoulders to set him down, then looked back at Nico. He had a look that Nico knew anywhere, but now was the time to ignore it.

“You cannot be serious,” Will said, his voice hard.

“Will, you know what he can do.” Nico explained, a tinge of panic in his own voice. “If anyone can stop him, it’s me.”

Before Nico could leave, Will gripped his wrist, pulling him closer, and connected their lips together. Will had that warm and reassuring feeling, somehow more than usual. When they reluctantly pulled apart, Will hugged him. That only made Nico’s abrupt departure even worse.

To hide the fear, Nico sent a joking salute to the room with a smile, then left with the faux emotion dropping.

The scene was utter chaos. The magma of the lava wall had turned black into what he assumed was obsidian, a few cabins - including his own- crumbled to their individual materials, centre hearth completely extinguished with Percy standing over it, enveloped in water.

Nico hadn’t been very good at math, just now being tutored by Will to catch up, but he did try to calculate in his head the best plan of action.

Why was Percy doing this? Attacking camp with his powers? How were the gods, including Poseidon, just sitting there watching as their children avoided being slaughtered? Thank the gods there hadn’t been any casualties, but some were in such critical condition that Nico could feel their life force draining.

Prime example, Lacy from the Aphrodite cabin was whimpering on the ground, several cuts and bites on her skin. Nico knelt to her side, carefully running his fingers along them.

“Lacy,” Nico whispered, “It’s going to be okay, you’ll be just fine”

She picked her up under the knees and behind her head. He pressed his fingers to her neck and thanked the gods once again that she wasn’t dead. “Miranda!” he shouted at the closest child of Demeter. She looked inharmed, yet still in shock.

“Oh my gods, Lacy…” she muttered. “Nico what—“

“Take her to the infirmary, tell Will it’s critical, I’m going to stop Percy.” he explained before parting ways.

As Nico reached the middle, standing in front of the hearth, Percy’s white glazed eyes flickered to him when Nico drew his stygian iron sword. Riptide reflected in the water, glowing bright in the sunlight.

“Percy!” he called, purposely gaining the son of Poseidon’s attention before he could choke Pollux anymore. “What in Hades are you doing?”

Percy said nothing but let Riptide clatter to the stone. Was that a sign of surrender? Did he somehow begin to fear Nico when they were forced to fight against each other?

Nico placed his hand on the ground, summoning stone to lift him to almost Percy’s height, a few skeletal soldiers climbing their way up the sides, blocking Nico from the oncoming shark Percy decided to flick his way.

“Percy, stop this!” Nico begged, more soldiers replacing the crumbling ones. “You're destroying your home, what is wrong with you?”

Again, Percy would not answer, but his eyes flickered from clear, sea green to white and hazy. He was fighting for control, he was fighting against his power, he was fighting against what possessed him.

“Eidolon.” Nico whispered to himself. He needed Lacy, to charmspeak Percy out of his daze. Just as he heard Piper had done. But the oldest of the children of Aphrodite were gone, except for…

“MITCHELL!” Nico called to the splintering cabin ten. No answer. He called again, a boy stumbling out that he could barely see. Nico turned to Lou Ellen who appeared beside him, ready to fight, “Retrieve Mitchell, guide him to Percy for charmspeak.”

Lou Ellen nodded and a few warriors leapt from the top, fell to 201 individual pieces, then reassembled in a moment to follow the daughter of Hecate.

“I can destroy you alone, without destroying Percy Jackson.” Nico stated.

“Can you, son of Hades?” the possessed Percy asked, his voice like ice water. It made Nico shiver, almost like he was feeling someone die.

Yet, he really was feeling someone die. He was feeling himself die.

Nico could barely breathe. He felt like someone was squeezing his throat, someone repelling him closer and closer to Percy. He was forced to his knees, a feeling of heaviness towards his head. The chaotic nature of the sound around him seemed hollow until there was none, and tears streamed his face.

He could see his hands becoming paler, shriveling up like raisins when his blue and red veins depleted in colour in accordance with his leaking eyes, ears and now, nose.

Nico forced himself to his feet, fighting Percy’s control, pushing his palms firm on the stone to resist being smashed back down. He felt like he was doing push-ups with ten bricks on his back.

Getting to his feet, almost too weak to fight, he willed the undead to tear away the stones and crawl between the cracks close to Percy.

With one final thrust of his hands, an order, the undead attacked Percy and Mitchell whispered something in Percy’s ear. The son of Poseidon and Hades slumped down at the same time, undead crumbling to a pile of bones, retreating with the sloshing water back to the ocean.

Nico felt himself get pushed up from behind, then laid gently across Percy’s knees. The eidolon was gone and he was captured in Percy’s sea smelled embrace. Percy tried to reach out for enough water to heal him, but no amount of ambrosia and nectar could replace all the blood that Nico lost that was now seeping into the grass.

Nico had minutes to live.

Percy studied Nico. His skin was transparent to the point where his veins were clearly visible under his pale tone. Dark blood seeped from his ears, starting to dry in clumps. A few tears escaped his eyes along with dark blood from the outside ring, eyes sunken in. Drops of blood from both nostrils slid down onto his lips and chin, which in turn spilled sideways as he was held.

“You controlled me,” Nico muttered.

“Not on purpose, I promise.” Percy said, feeling his eyes well up with tears. He furiously swiped them away, then stroked the hair from Nico’s bloody face.

“You’re Percy.” Nico enunciated, like he was reminding himself he succeeded. More glistening blood seeped from his lips as Percy nodded. “Your face…” he whispered deliriously. “Can I hold it?”

“Yeah, of course,” Percy said, drawing Nico’s hand to his cheek, holding it there.

“I didn’t realize the blood—“ Nico tried to pull away, but Percy kept his hand the way it was. If this was the comfort he needed, Percy could oblige.

“Don’t you dare apologize,” Percy urged. Nico didn’t say anything to that. His breath hitched in his throat, Percy realizing he was forcing his body to stay alive for longer, for what he needed to say.

“I’m scared to die,” he finally croaked.

“You’re going to Elysium,” Percy insisted. “You are. You’re dying a hero’s death.”

Nico laughed precariously. “I’m not scared for me.”

Will, Percy realized.

He was terrified of leaving Will alone. He knew how much the son of Apollo had been through; losing his brothers in the Battle of Manhattan, becoming a counsellor for tons of his siblings at fourteen, losing and saving more after the Battle with Gaea - no teen like him needed to live like that.

For the first time ever, Nico sobbed - hard. Tears dripped down either side of his face, spilling down to his ears. More blood escaped his lips which only made Percy’s heart clench more.

“Please, don’t let him be alone,” Nico begged, his breath shallow and almost gone. “Don’t let him ever be alone...please.”

Percy let his forehead touch Nico’s when the son of Hades’ body went slack, and his pupils contracted like he’d been having a staring contest with the sun.

Not for one minute did Nico di Angelo fixate on himself, he was afraid for Will. Nico didn’t fear death, he feared the loneliness he knew his love would feel, and that pain hurt him more than the wounds that had slowly killed him.

Episode 3: A Hesitating Pulse Is Good Company

I still remember the first time I came to Melbourne; I was about 18. Everything was foreign and weird and busy and sunny. ‘People are strange, when you're a stranger. Faces look ugly, when you're alone.’ I ended up in Collingwood, another planet to me back then. I found solace in a corner pub. The porch light was on and it was the closest thing to home as I could find.

Living in the big smoke isn't for everyone, but certain people just fucking thrive. Jay is one of those people. Totally sober in the spot he lives, figuratively speaking. When I first met the bloke, he showed me through his place in his moccasins (yeah I remember mate) and pointed out different pieces of art, memorabilia, just stuff. The stuff that we fill our spaces with because we love looking at it and it's a puzzle of what makes us, ‘us’. This was the shit that he loves and you could see it straight away. Outside, there was this faint buzz of the city, with a heartbeat and tyre noise and the smell of god knows what. Maybe a police siren or some shit. It reminded me of a song, with the line "A hesitating pulse is good company". If I was to sum up Collingwood, especially in that house on that day, it would be with that line. "A hesitating pulse is good company".

Firstly, Jay is a bloody good bloke. My old man would always tell me the best way to approach somebody is like this: If you think you're a good fella, I do too, until you prove me wrong. Something tells me that Jay hasn't proven anyone wrong.

Knowing this about him, we approached Jay recently about doing a story and he was more than happy to go with it, which actually sort of posed a problem; he's got so many fucking things on the go, and is equally good at all of them, that we were hard pressed to make room for it all. But we'll give it a red hot crack anyway.

Born in the early 90s, Jay spent most of his time as a young fella riding BMX like most of us did. Outside til dark, jumping kerbs, ruining your shoes by putting them in between the forks and the front tyre. Yeah we all did it. "How do you keep ruining your shoes so quickly??" the words rang out across the house and you knew you were about to get whooped. Street Sharks on the telly, poster of Matt Hoffman on the bedroom wall. How good was that? Then the natural transition (as if that isn't the best fucking pun I've ever heard) to skateboarding. "The first skate video I ever saw was a FLIP SORRY part. That got me so pumped up to go skate, the whole soundtrack and attitude was surreal! Skateboarding basically consumed my life from then all the way up til now," he says, and yeah, it fucking shows. "I tell you what, I had a few Margera decks growing up. But Geoff Rowley stood out for me, and still influences me for sure, even to this day."

There's always been this weird connection between skating and motorcycles; we're not talking your $40,000 BMW touring bike or your Hyabusa. We're talking about Triumphs, Harleys, chopped up Honda's. Making noise and pissing people off. Literally giving the finger to anyone who gives you that greasy look. "I got into motorcycles when I was about 21 or 22, after a trip to the US. All I'd ever wanted to do was go to the U.S and skate all the spots I'd seen in the videos. I had organized with a friend from Geroa (check a map) to head over; his old lady owned a condo in Oceanside, Cali. They were kind enough to invite me over to stay."

"I took some photos of that chopper on this 35mm Minolta 201 I got for $30 on eBay.”

"So there we are at a skate park in California, and a mate of Ray's rolled up on this bad-ass cone Shovel chopper that he built himself. I didn't grow up around parents or a cool uncle who rode motorcycles, so when I was confronted with this dirty, leaky machine, I was fascinated. No foot pegs, looked like it hadn't been cleaned since the 80s. We were in the car on highway, watching him haul ass, weaving in and out of lanes, skateboard strapped to the sissy bar. That was it for me" he says, and you know that you had the same moment at some point in your life where you went "Yep, that's what I'm all about". He continues, "I took some photos of that chopper on this 35mm Minolta 201 I got for $30 on eBay. Turned out the mechanism to eject the film was broken so I lost it all. Still have the memories though. I came home to Australia and maybe a month later I went and bought a 2016 Sporty 48; because what the fuck do I know about building old motorcycles?" But who the fuck cares what it is right, as long as it's not a street bike.

This leads us into another jack of all trades moment with Jay; photography. "Sometimes when I'm feeling frisky, I whip out the old Nikon D700. I take 6 photos or maybe 30, and sometimes 1 will come out good. I'm not a photographer, I just take photos sometimes.", which is pretty much enough to sum it up. "I'm stoked with a whole bunch of photos I've taken, and that's all that fuckin' matters." Too right bloke.

"Sometimes when I'm feeling frisky, I whip out the old Nikon D700. I take 6 photos or maybe 30, and sometimes 1 will come out good. I'm not a photographer, I just take photos sometimes."

"Sometimes I paint, sometimes I get angsty sitting there for long periods of time trying to figure out colour blending and all the rest. I did the Knucklehead painting and that's pretty much where that ends." I was actually lucky enough to grab said Knucklehead painting, which takes pride of place in my lounge room. It's a wicked, dusty, rusty painting that tells you that the motor is as old as sin. Just how we like it. "I can't draw to save my life, but I spent what felt like 3 months working on it here and there." That led us to a pretty significant point in the story, with what I guess I'm trying to capture with these interviews. "Expressing yourself is a great way to be heard; you can tell a story through an action, a photo, a drawing..whatever. And without self expression, the world is a pretty boring place."

So, as far as the nitty gritty, I think a lot of us have seen Jay's scoot by now. That 48 Sporty we mentioned earlier was written off "trying to pull a wheelie leaving work", which is a pretty standard outcome I reckon. So the white beast is a 72 Sporty, which was stripped down and and built back up by David at Primal Garage, with some work being done by Sean at Bar-None Moto. He cut the rear fender struts, and had some solid bar machined up to look like suspension, but it is actually hard-tailed. He also lifted the tank a little, modified the seat pan that Sean made, fit a new rear fender so it tucked nicely around the tire. He also freshened up the bike by re-painting the tins pearl white, with champagne stripes fading to silver. He also chucked the Leviathan cross on the tank at my request. He finished it all off with a set of bad ass up sweeps! Sean smashed out new bars, sissybar, license plate/ brake light bracket, and gave Dave a good start on the king/queen seat pan. Now I have a sweet ass looking bike that I’ve barely ridden this year. Covid has been a struggle", he says, and those of you in Victoria can attest to the fact that this year has been a total write off. There aren’t too many ways to describe riding a motorcycle to somebody who hasn't done it. And there's a difference again between riding in total comfort, heated grips, perfect riding position, had vitamins this morning, has a go-pro strapped to his head, has every supply under the sun in his bags, middle aged dentist on a touring bike. I'm talking about being stripped down of all fancy equipment, burning your legs, can't hear anything, welts on your face, hot, cold, numb fingers, sore arse, no fuel left, phone is dead, you're still 50kms from where you think the camp spot is but you know what? You could keep riding for another 1000kms because fuck me, this is what it's about.

The smell of a campfire, the taste of a bug on your teeth, the spine shattering crack from a pothole on your hardtail, losing your house keys somewhere in the last 2 days riding, unpeeling yourself from the bike and finally being able to stretch your hips as the locals stare. "Passing out in the dirt, waking up in the rain. Skateboarding was my first love, but riding motorcycles is one big adventure, and the best one I've been on in years." says Jay, as I think we all for a moment realize that from now on, whenever anyone asks "Hey, lets skip town for a night on the bikes", you're going to say yes regardless, for fear of never being able to do it again.

If our readers are anything like us, and I think they are, living in the city is doable if there's an escape in between the chaos. "Pre-Covid, my girlfriend (Asti) and our dog (Luna) and I would head up into the mountains every other weekend. Find a cool spot to park and just walk around for awhile, explore. We could let Luna off lead and she loved it. I like shooting photos in the forest. Nature is the best".

"Camping holds a special place in my heart. I love the smell of a campfire, endless banter between mates, NO RECEPTION. Not showering for awhile is also a guilty pleasure. We've all had our fair share of wet-wipe showers". I'll be honest, as long as there's water near by, that's good enough for me. Winter or not. Which reminds me, little tip for painting the town brown in the bush; dig two little holes for your heels, stick a log or the shovel in the ground, hang onto it and lean back. Opens up the bowels. (You'll thank me I reckon).

Everyone has a favorite camping story. I think as time has gone on, they don’t stand out as much as they used to, they're all great. Even when you ended up broken down in the rain, lost, hungry, hungover. Still better than a night in the city if you ask me.

"My favorite camp spot was something not easily forgotten. My girlfriend and I tripped out to Wilson’s Promontory one weekend. We paid to spend the night in the camp site which was basically a grass car park with no fires allowed and we decided that it just wouldn’t fly with us. We packed a couple of backpacks with the tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bags etc. We hiked a trail for an hour or so, scouting a suitable place to set up shop along the way. We eventually decided to veer off the trail, and head down through the shrub toward the ocean. We ended up finding the most insane spot! On top of a cliff, a nice flat piece of land on some moss covered rocks. Looking over the ocean. We were even graced with a sunset, right over the water, directly in front of us. Romantic as fuck, it was amazing. Golden hour blew us away. Not a single person in sight, but us. We got a little fire going and just marveled at what we found and where we were. That was the best camp spot for sure. If it were possible to accompany that with motorcycles, shit. I could have died right there and then."

I reckon that's a pretty good image to leave this story on. I think there's something special about people who can find solace in nothing, in no-one, just being content with what's happening at that moment in time. A sunset, setting off a car alarm with your pipes, burning away from a servo with a full tank of fuel. The big picture is made up of a million little pictures.

We always ask people what their life motto is; what they stand by. Jay gave us this. "Do more of what makes you happy. Whatever it is.”

When Blake finds herself sold out to the Saviours by her abusive fiancé, she realises that she’s certainly not on her own anymore and finds an unlikely friend in Negan. And Negan does NOT like men who beat their girlfriends, one tiny bit….

Chapter 201 - Chickens

[Blake just wants a quiet breakfast. Why is that always impossible at the Sanctuary?]

Blake woke early with a headache the next morning .

She had had a terrible night's sleep. Half to do with the wriggling toddler that had been sandwiched between her and Negan, who couldn't seem to keep her legs still. And half to do with the impending dread of having to tell Brandon just what had happened to David.

She knew that today needed to be the day.

Blake knew that running out on him, without even an explanation last night, had not been the most sensible thing to do. But would telling him have been the best idea either?

Even so, today had to be the day.

Brandon had always seemed very chilled out and Blake could only hope that he stayed that chilled when she told him the truth. But it did worry her now that despite David never previously showing the signs of having much of a temper, his true colours had eventually come out, revealing him as the monster he truly was.

By the time Blake had dragged her pounding head into the bathroom, showered and dressed, she emerged back into the bedroom to find Mia stirring in the bed.

Not wanting to wake Negan, who was lying on his front, head squashed into a pillow, arm hanging off one side of the bed. Blake scooped up the baby girl and headed into her bedroom next door.

"Come on, Sweetie," she murmured, pressing a kiss to the top of the little girl's head.

Ten minutes later they were out, dressed, and heading down to the large dining hall for breakfast, Mia yawning as they went.

"You still tired, baby?" asked Blake, cocking an eye at the girl who was sat on her hip, as they walked down the wide metal staircase, it taking all Blake's effort not to yawn herself..

"Yesh," said Mia in a matter-of-fact voice. "Mommy wos wriggly in tha night."

Blake knew she had tossed and turned a lot in the night, unable to settle properly.

"Sorry, Mommy didn't mean to wake you," Blake said soothingly, smoothing tuft of Mia's hair away from her face.

Mia peered up at her with round eyes.

"Wos Mommy scawed of the storm too?"

At the toddlers words, Blake smiled softly. "No, baby, I wasn't scared of the storm."

But Blake knew deep down maybe there was another thing she was scared of. One thing keeping her up at night.

One thing that appeared just twenty minutes later, as Blake was sat with Mia on one side of one of the long tables at the very edge of the large dining hall.

The blonde had just been watching Mia messily eat a little oatmeal, not able to stomach anything herself, when she had glanced up to see Brandon walking through the door at the opposite end of the room.

She saw him pause for a moment, eyes searching the room until finally, to Blake's utter dismay, his gaze landed on her.

Brandon gave a smile and quickly hurried over.

"Blake," he said brightly, eyes flicking to Mia as he approached. "I've been looking for you. After you ran out last night I-"

"Yeah sorry…about that," uttered Blake cutting him off. "I was just….feeling a little under the weather."

Brandon eyed her but didn't make any comment, merely turning to Mia, who was currently shovelling a large spoonful of oatmeal into her mouth, and giving a wide grin.

"Now who's this?" he asked titling his head.

But he didn't give either girl the chance to answer, before turning his attention back to Blake, an astonished frown passing over his face.

"She's yours?" he said in amazement. "A-And David's?"

Blake's blood suddenly ran cold at the words.

Her and David's? Is that what he really thought?

Blake felt her blood run cold at the idea of ever having had a child with that man who had abused her for so long.

She looked hurriedly to Mia.

The little girl to her left certainly could have been the right age to be her and David's, especially if they had conceived some time in the year after the apocalypse.

"No!" the blonde woman said quickly, a little louder than she probably should have.

And Brandon looked more than a little shocked at the outburst.

"No, she's uh…she's not mine…" But immediately Blake regretted her words as Mia peered up at her, smacking her lips as she ate. "…I mean, she is…but…not biologically…but we found her…and-"

"You and David?" asked Brandon with another small frown.

At the use of her ex-fiancé's name, Blake faltered, paling immediately.

But Brandon obviously wasn't stupid and spoke before Blake had the chance to answer.

"Listen, Blakey, it's ok. I'm guessing by the way you keep avoiding my question, that David….that he didn't make it."

The blonde woman felt her heart begin to race in her chest.

Shit.

"I…" she began, but Brandon shook his head, cutting over her.

"It's ok," he replied gently. "A lot of people are gone and, well, I hoped that David was still alive…but I guess that's just the way of things now. The people we love are always the first to go and it's us that's got to deal with that heartbreak of losing them. Just living with that loss for the rest of our lives."

Blake stared at Brandon but didn't say a word in response.

If only he knew the truth.

But fuck. How the hell could she tell him now?

But suddenly, a tiny voice from beside her broke the tension.

"Does you knows my Daddy? He taykin' me to see tha chikins layter," Mia said proudly, brandishing her spoon, that was clutched in her tiny fist, up at Brandon.

Negan had indeed agreed, after much whining from Mia, and whining equally as much about the loss of his own big bad reputation himself, to take the little girl down to visit the chicken coop at some point today.

Blake, as much as she liked the gardens, had blanched at the idea, the smell of chicken crap forever making her nauseous.

Brandon immediately beamed down at the toddler, reaching over and tickling her beneath the chin fondly.

"I knew your Daddy alright," he said with a chuckle. He gave a soft sigh. "Betcha miss him don't you?"

Shit.

Blake opened to her mouth to respond but Mia did it for her.

"Noh. I onwy sawed him jus' naw."

Brandon retracted his hand slowly, giving a frown, but seemed to dismiss Mia's comment as toddler babble, turning back to Blake and stuffing his hands into both pockets.

"So…" he said bouncing on his heels. "Big place right? Only got the chance to look around part of it this morning, but it looks like a proper community."

Blake nodded as Brandon continued.

"Not like the last place I was at, just a couple of houses, fifteen of us there max."

"Yeah, the Sanctuary's a great place," Blake replied, her eyes flitting this way and that before they finally fell to her lap, pondering her life anywhere but here at the Sanctuary now.

If David had never brought her here, would she still be at Alexandria? Would she still have been alive even? At David's hand she wasn't so sure…

"This Negan guy seems a but of a hard-ass though, right?" Brandon said suddenly causing Blake's eyes to flick immediately up to him. "Haven't seen him yet but from what I've heard-"

Brandon gave a whistle.

"-seems like a guy you don't want to get on the wrong side of, y'know what I mean?"

Blake opened her mouth to reply.

Because she had to tell him right? Tell him who exactly Negan was to her?

But to her utter dismay, before she could even say a word to forewarn him, despite the buzz of the bustling dining hall, a set of unmistakable heavy and chinking footfalls could be heard approaching.

And Blake looked up to see Negan, leather jacket on, Lucille lifted up onto his shoulder intimidatingly, crossing the room towards them.

Blake closed her eyes.

Goddamn it.

Brandon followed Blake's gaze over his shoulder, stiffening slightly as Negan strolled towards them.

Despite never meeting Negan he obviously recognised him, and the bat on his shoulder.

The dark-haired Saviour had his jaw clenched, eyes narrowed and glinting and looked so very far removed right now from the soft and caring Negan Blake had confessed her worries to last night.

Now he looked like the fearsome leader of grotesque legend.

And certainly someone you didn't want to get on the wrong side of.

But yet again, a certain toddler was the one to break that foil.

"Hai Daddy!" she said happily, lifting a spoonful of breakfast up towards him. "Does you wan sum of mai owtmeel?"

Brandon didn't move for a moment before his eyes slowly travelled, first from Mia, then to Negan, a sudden realisation dawning upon his face. Before turning back to Blake, who instantly felt her cheeks turn a bright pink colour.

But Negan didn't give a response to Mia, merely stroking the top of her head with his large hand, the gesture enough to make Mia lower her spoon back to her mouth contentedly.

But the dark-haired man's eyes were fixed now to the blonde man before him instead.

"So….you mus' be Brandon," said Negan in a low and growling voice, taking a long and looming step forward.

Blake saw Brandon give a visible gulp, his bright blue eyes looking far more fearful that they previously had a mere moment ago.

"Y-Yes, I am…" he nodded instantly.

Negan sucked on his teeth, looking slightly irritable as he continued to gaze at Brandon.

Blake knew what Negan was thinking of course.

The same of she had last night when she had first laid eyes on him.

Just how much, in this slimmer form, he looked like David. The hair, the eyes… especially to someone like Negan who had only met David a handful of times.

But Brandon looked more than a little flustered now with the way that Negan was staring him down, unblinking and not speaking. And so with his blue eyes unable to meet Negan's gaze any longer, he excused himself.

"I errr, I'd better get going…" he said quickly, easing himself around Negan and shuffling quickly away, crossing the dining hall, getting lost in the crowd.

Blake gave a small groan as she watched him go, letting her head drop forwards in frustration.

"You didn' tell him, Doll-face?" enquired Negan, climbing on his long legs over the bench and dropping down into the seat opposite the blonde woman, placing Lucille down onto the table before him.

Blake looked up at him, letting out a sigh.

"Well he figured out David was gone by himself," she said wearily. "But I didn't tell him how it happened."

"That enough?" Negan said cocking an eyebrow up at her.

But Blake gave a shrug. "I don't know, he deserves he truth, but telling him…well its hard."

Negan huffed. "You gotta remember what that asshole fiancé of your did to you for all those fuckin' months, Darlin'. Shit, Davey-boy wasn' a fuckin' saint. An' his damn brother needs to hear that shit."

He was right of course. But that still didn't make any of this any easier.

Blake stared at Negan. "I know," she murmured, letting out yet another heavy sigh before turning to Mia who had dropped her spoon into the bowl before her with a clatter. "You done, baby?"

Mia, who looked like she had had more oatmeal on her, than was likely in her stomach, nodded.

"Chikins naw, Eggy?" she asked the dark-haired man before her hopefully, as Blake wiped at her face with a napkin.

And this time it was Negan's turn to sigh.

"Shit, alright then, Beansprout," he said tiredly, pushing himself to his feet again and reaching across the table and hauling the toddler up from beneath her arms, pulling her into his chest.

"You able to look after Lucille for me for a while, Peaches?" he smirked at Blake as Mia made a grab for his ear, pulling hard on it.

Blake smirked back at his words rolling her eyes.

"Do I have to?" she asked, tutting playfully.

"Now, now, Darlin'," Negan scolded in a teasing voice. "Play nice, Sweetheart, an' if you're lucky Daddy might jus' have a treat for you later, if you catch my drift."

And with that Negan waggled his eyebrows in Blake's direction cockily.

But this only caused Blake to grin, narrowing her green eyes in his direction, as she got to her feet and slid herself from the bench neatly.

"You talking to me or the bat there, tough guy?"

But she didn't wait for a response now, merely snatching up the barbed-wire covered Lucille from the scrubbed wooden table and giving another audible tut, before turning and walking away, swaying her hips as she went.

"We'll be in the west garden if you want us," she called back to him over her shoulder, as Negan chuckled behind her, watching her go, carrying Lucille with her as she went.

"You know what, Beansprout?" said Negan, pressing his face into Mia's, grizzling his stubbly cheek across hers. "Your Daddy really does love your Momma. Very fuckin' much."

"Chikins naw, Eggy," Mia reprimanded, pressing her chubby palm flat to Negan's cheek and holding his face away from hers.

And Negan could only grin.

"Alright, alright, kid," he chuckled, as he turned, making to head back across the busy dining hall with Mia in tow. "Chickens it is."

CHARITABLE SPIRIT

The lights were off, bar the Christmas tree in the living room window and a few night lights in the upstairs hall. Bedroom doors were left ajar as Claire tiptoed across the floorboards begging they didn’t creak. She sighed when she finally managed to slip into her bedroom, bedside lamp on, husband tucked under the covers, Stephen King book in his hand.

Her teeth had been brushed an hour before the forth rereading of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and the sixth internal rendition of Go the Fuck to Sleep. She had Owen to thank for that last one, the man chuckling as he slid the book towards her a few visits to the local bookshop ago. Claire had been ready for her bed since dinner was served, her shower had and her pyjamas put on. She didn’t know what exactly it was about Owen or how it came about but the man was destined for a big brood, Claire just wasn’t made for his heavy babies.

She could already guess what he was assuming behind his black-framed dad glasses Claire loved to tease him about. ‘You know how Katie and Nathan are struggling to conceive?’ Claire didn’t wait for him to nod. ‘I want to offer to be their surrogate.’ She spat it out, almost biting her tongue the words moved too fast.

‘What?’

Nathan and Katie had bought the property next door only a year after Owen and Claire bought theirs. The young couple had the same intentions with a little less renovation. They wanted an out of city lifestyle and a break from their inner-city jobs. Owen and Nathan couldn’t have been more similar and with only four years between them, they had plenty to bond over. The couples had been close from the day they met sharing weekly dinners full of good food, laughter and an open bottle of wine. Katie had been trying to conceive longer than Owen and Claire were married. Six years was too much. They had poured their life savings into failed attempts at IVF and the previous Friday they had woefully admitted that giving up was their only option for a biological child.

‘They’re great people, Owen, and you know that.’ Kate’s body just happened to refuse every attempt at forcing it to grow a life. It wasn’t fair. They were hard working, well mannered, great members of society they should have been allowed to raise a child exactly like themselves. ‘They’re applying for the adoption waitlist but that could take them close to a decade. I had two healthy babies without a hitch. I can do it again.’

He shook his head, hand reaching to pull the glasses off his face so Owen could squeeze the bridge of his nose. ‘Claire —‘

‘Don’t tell me I can’t do this, Owen.’ She only stood her ground. ‘What if this was us, what if we struggled to get Bernie or Hunter … what if it was Karen or your sister? What if it’s the boys in the future? Wouldn’t it drive you crazy to know someone was willing to do this for them or us but her grumpy old husband said no?’

‘I’m not grumpy … or old …’ he pouted, ‘I just — what about us? I would like to have another kid, you know? And what’ll the impact be on you? On the boys?’ He was trying not to be defensive, she could see the tick in his brow trying desperately not to scowl. ‘I’m sure they would love it, Claire, and God would I like to help them but I don’t think this is the right way to do it.’

‘It’s the only way we can help them. We’ve sat around for years playing sympathetic, they’ve got to hate us. They’ve done nothing but help us. They take the boys whenever we ask, even when we don’t. I think we have to repay them for that. We were teaching the boys about Christmas spirit tonight, teaching them that it’s about looking out for others. I think we should practice what we preach. They’re not going to care that I’m pregnant or that the baby’s not ours — they’ll be excited that Katie and Nathan will be getting a baby. And, I’ll be fine.’

He opened his mouth to protest but Claire stopped him. ‘I hope you know I’m not asking your permission. I’ll let this marriage fall apart before I let Katie destroy herself over this. It’s 9 months, Owen, we’ll live.’

‘Our marriage isn’t going to fall apart, Claire.’ He sighed at her, half huffing. ‘I just want to make sure you’ve thought about this, first.’ She nodded. Claire wasn’t the kind of person to walk into a commitment without thinking about it first. Owen knew that but this situation was different. Doing something like this for someone else no matter how close they were, was going to have repercussions. He understood Claire felt like Katie was the little sister she never knew she wanted but there were a lot of things that could go wrong and he didn’t want Claire in the firing line.

Just because they had the boys — without planning — didn’t mean this whole thing was going to take immediately. He worried that it wasn’t just Katie’s hostile uterus, that maybe something was wrong with her eggs or Nathan’s sperm. He didn’t want to watch his wife get her hopes up, nor did he want to witness her miscarry regardless of if it was someone else’s baby. He liked Nathan, hell, he adored the guy but Owen didn’t want to see their friendships fall apart because Claire couldn’t keep up her end of the deal. He knew they would test her, make sure her health was in order before going through with anything but there was always room for error no matter how perfect his wife was.

She was right, anyhow, the holidays were all about being selfless. Part of him wished it was about dressing up as Santa Claus and surprising his kids but Owen wanted them to take more out of the holiday season. He wanted Bernard and Hunter to learn there were lessons in kindness and selflessness during November and December. Maybe they were too young to completely understand what their mother was about to do, but it would stand as a grand example of kind gestures.

‘They might not even accept. I mean, I want to mention it to them tomorrow but they might say no.’ Claire shrugged, leaning forward until she was standing on her hands and knees as she kissed her husband on the cheek before climbing under the covers.

‘They won’t say no.’

Katie almost pushed Hunter off her lap when Claire finally got around to her proposal over dinner. The other woman had a Grady toddler on one knee and a glass of wine in the other hand which promptly ended up in her husband’s lap.

‘Oh, Claire, we can’t ask you to do that.’ Katie was crying immediately, tears already soaking her cheeks as she squeezed Hunter to her chest, apologising to the boy for giving him a fright.

Claire shook her head. ‘You’re not asking, I’m offering. Besides, I’d like to see your family come visit you for Christmas instead of making you drive to Colorado.’ Selfishly, she hated setting up a Christmas meal for the six of them — including the boys — two weeks before Christmas just so they could celebrate the holidays with their friends.

‘But you hated being pregnant.’ Katie told her, reminding the woman that she had been privy to both her pregnancies. It was the tears on her face that pushed Claire, solidified her want to do this — not that she would back down now that her friends were giving her a friendly out.

She smiled, wide and full of teeth as Claire’s eyes drifted to Hunter’s dirty face. They would one day have a meal with both boys sitting calmly at the table, each of them clean and Whiskey not begging for scraps at their feet. Tonight was not that night, Bernie had already excused himself, disappearing to poke at the presents already under the tree as three-year-old Hunter had smeared half — if not all — of his potatoes across his face. They were both getting too old for this, Claire prayed. Nevertheless, she loved them, no matter how swollen her feet had gotten, or how round her belly whilst they were still tucked safely in her belly. She had only smiled softly at each warning of a c-section if another pound was gained. She trusted her boys, loved her boys in the womb and out. ‘I hated being pregnant but I loved getting to hold my boys at the end of it. I will love getting to see you hold your baby finally.’ Claire rose from her chair and rounded the table to crouch beside Kate. ‘You deserve this and I want to help you to the best of my ability.’

Kate’s tears had been silent until Claire’s hand touched her knee, the other woman breaking out into a full sob as her Husband reached over and slid an arm around her shoulders. ‘I really don’t want to drive to Colorado next year.’ Kate laughed, wiping her tears before she pulled Claire into a tight hug.

‘You’re probably going to have to drink the rest of that for me too.’ She laughed, siding her wine glass towards Kate’s plate as she rose and slipped herself into Hunter’s chair, the boy transferring from the lap of his sometime babysitter to his mother. ‘We can do this.’ Claire reached for her hand and squeezed.

‘Are you okay with this?’ Katie turned to Owen, knowing the mans possessive and protective trait. Owen liked to keep the things in his world within the realm of his protection. He trusted Claire, trusted her body, trusted her intentions, but Katie knew something in his head would be going haywire.

Owen gave her a short nod as Claire laughed, waving her hand in his direction. ‘Please, he loves it when I’m pregnant.’ She threw a wink towards her husband, making him laugh as he shook his head. There was still a bit of neanderthal in him, they all knew that.

The sound of feet on Owen’s polished floorboards ran towards them in typical Bernard fashion, little boy holding a wrapped gift over his head as he gleamed at the table of adults. ‘Can I open it now?’ He already knew it was from Katie and Nathan, already knew he could open it before the night was over. But he asked with the biggest smile his four-year-old cheeks could offer.

Katie cleared her throat and matched his smile. ‘Of course! Can you bring Hunter’s to the table too?’ He dropped his gift on the chair beside his father before racing off into the living room knowing already which was Hunter’s gift without asking. Claire always colour co-ordinated wrapping with the tree’s baubles. Everything was silver and red bar four green presents — from Katie and Nathan. ‘I feel like what I got you for Christmas can’t match what you’re offering.’ She smiled towards Claire, feeling a little silly that she stocked up on her friend’s favourite bath time luxuries.

Claire just squeezed her hand again. All they could give in return was their joy.

We burn the wax burners more often than anything, and like I said, the scents change frequently. For what reason did you last cry? I am just an overwhelmed ball of stress and anxiety.
