I've had a PS5 for over a year now and I've wanted to use it as an excuse to write a kind of review for a while now.

Not that the world needs more reviewers, reviews, or ads in entertainment's clothing. But because gaming has always been a source of joy for me, and because I'd always hoped I'd be able to merge my joys of gaming and writing.

It's not lost on me how much of my joy of the hobby comes not from experiencing but the comfortable knowledge that should I choose to experience, I can, at a moment's notice. Or rather, it was and then my wife phrased it in a way that illuminated it to me.

I am, then, a collector of electronic amusements. I've spent more money than is likely ethical on the hobby over the years, even when doing so was financially irresponsible. It's then interesting to me that I would not recommend it for others, and in part because of how toxic the industry is.

One of the games I've played the most since getting the PS5, 45 hours according to the in-game timer, but that's discounting the time on other saves (and other platforms) is Assassin's Creed Valhalla. A good game, I'd say, one that did not review well because reviewers are intended to play enough of a game in a week or two to make an authoritative judgement on its quality. It like a great many games is not best enjoyed at that pace. I consider it a good popcorn game. It offers enough variety at any given moment that I'm likely to find something I'd like to pursue. Exploring for treasure, raiding a monastery, following the next quest line. It's a good thing to do between other more focused experiences. Something you can turn on in a 30 minute break between work and feel appropriately amused. Like popcorn, not a great meal, and it gets tiring after a while, but when you want it, it hits like nothing else.

A good game, from a talented studio. Ubisoft Montreal, also the studio behind everyone's favorite Not-Really-An-Assassin's Creed Pirate game: Black Flag, and like that game the main character is as naturally stealthy as a thunderstorm, but unlike that game this has far less forced stealth that goes against that grain.

But Ubisoft is also the studio that's been in the news multiple times over the last few years, for accounts of sexual harassment, crunch, unfair compensation, and a culture of misogyny that has likely robbed us of more female protagonists than have even publicly been admitted, not to mention the working conditions it must have created for the staff.

And Ubisoft is only one of a glut of mega-publishers with similar stories. Microsoft bought Activision, who's CEO stepped down in the wake of similar sexism basked controversies, but short of unionizing to protect themselves, what guarantees do the employees have that their new corporate overlords will protect them from abusive management anymore than the old ones?

Even studios that keep their rumors under wraps tend to lean into employee crunch. 80 hour work weeks, hundreds of thousands of employee hours for relatively small details not for art but for marketability. (Not that Rockstar doesn't have their own seedy culture), but would Read Dead Redemption's story feel any less compelling or make any fewer comparisons to Blood Meridian if the horses didn't have realistic testicle behavior?

I'm beyond saving. Absolutely fascinated by the technology, invested in the mathematics behind volumetrics, physics, and ray tracing. A PS5 is an arguably budget conscious way to play modern releases that utilize all those and more, if you too are lost in the pixels like me.

But the reality is that Balatro is probably the best game of the year, and you can play that on a $200 laptop, and unless LocalThunk has absolutely terrible politics, investing in smaller more measured experiences is a better choice for everyone involved.

I'll leave you with one last thing. For a long time the games industry has been kind of an early prediction of capitalistic trends. It's arguable whether that's because of how much money it makes or because there's something about it that reveals these things earlier. Microsoft made profit increases every quarter this year. They laid off more than 10,000 workers last year, and are on track to match that this year. These are layoffs across all sectors, but a good many of them were from the various games studios the conglomerate owns. Many among award winning studios who have released well regarded and well selling games. The business goal quoted for this was to maintain profitability while investing in cloud infrastructure and AI development.

Granted, it's not directly related to them, but after Friday's events Microsoft's stock prices are down. How many workers you think they'll need to axe to maintain profitability against that? It's always eventually a losing game investing in corporations, as a consumer, employee, or even an investor.

for computer specs: i also do not know much about computers but have had to buy a few computers before, the few tips i know are: make sure you get good RAM, especially if you want to multitask and if you also want to play games on it. 8gb is kinda ok but not great, i think 12gb is the average recommended for a lot of games, 16gb is what my computer has and everything runs pretty smoothly. In terms of storage space i think 256gb is not as good, 512gb is better, my computer has 2 TB (so like, 2000gb) and I've downloaded like 40 pretty large games and only used up about 546gb so if you're not planning on downloading every single game you own a copy of then 512gb should be ok i think? the next step past 512gb is 1tb and honestly (in my opinion) terabytes are kinda overkill unless you're downloading movies or make youtube videos for a living or just data hoard. the more storage and RAM you add the more the price spikes, once you get up to TB instead of GB it gets pretty expensive. for example- an 8gb RAM 512gb storage laptop is about 400$ at best buy, 16gb RAM and 512gb storage is closer to 600$, and 16gb RAM and 1tb storage is almost 800$. most computers under 400$ tend to just be so slow or glitchy that they're not very worth it (in my opinion- i also haven't bought very many computers in my lifetime so i only have a few examples to go off of)

also fair warning when i wanted a Gaming Laptop once i bought one of those Republic of Gamers Asus brand laptops- if the charger breaks on that thing replacements are ridiculously expensive (like, around 200$????? at least at the time i had the laptop) so it's probably not worth it unless you can find cheaper bootleg chargers. i am not a fan of asus 👍

thankfully price is less of an issue now since someone has offered to pay for it (she didnt give me a price cap so idk how much shed pay but!) i think 16gb and 512gb would do well then!! thank you!!!

“want me to help you carry your bag? it looks heavy,” he asked you and took a step closer to you. his hand extended itself, indicating he was ready to help you carry your bag.

wouldn’t you two look like a couple if he did that? you didn’t want to take the risk and shook your head, “no thank you.” sunghoon retracted his hand, his face looked like one of defeat. “that’s fine, shall we head to the library then?” he asked quietly.

within 3 minutes, both of you had reached the library, and you made your way inside, the cold air conditioning hitting your face. a stark contrast to the hot weather outside.

Xiaomi launches Xiaomi HyperOS for cars, smart homes, and personal gadgets

Xiaomi announced Xiaomi HyperOS, powering its smart ecosystem of personal devices, automobiles, and home items, during its “Leap Beyond the Moment” launch event. Targeted four main objectives: Xiaomi HyperOS promises a revolutionary user experience with low-level refactoring, cross-end intelligent connectivity, proactive intelligence, and end-to-end security. The recently announced Xiaomi 14 Series, Xiaomi Watch S3, Xiaomi TV S Pro 85″ MiniLED, and other domestic gadgets will come with Xiaomi HyperOS.

Full device potential through low-level refactoring

Xiaomi has grown from 100 users to 1.175 billion consumers and over 200 product categories in 13 years. Xiaomi has to navigate the many device operating systems and ecosystem compatibility issues in the Internet of Things era. This experience inspired Xiaomi HyperOS, a groundbreaking innovation. Xiaomi HyperOS, under development since 2017, aims to unify IoT. Its goal is to merge all ecosystem devices into one system. Not Your Average Legacy ~ Sims 4

Hi, my name is Gabrielle and ever since early last year I wanted to see if I could create my own legacy challenge. Going into this challenge I want you to know that it’s not just about making a sim and completing the tasks to beat the challenge. This is a legacy challenge, however, I made it with endless storyline possibilities; think of it as a narrative adventure game where the player's choice is heavily impacted!

I do not specifically have rules other than following each generation in order and no money cheats (Only cheat your money for generation 1 for the starting funds).

Generation 01 - Writer’s Block

Ah….ok that’s pretty much that! You pack your bags, check your bank account to make sure you have enough simoleons and finally your laptop. Perfect, you're out the door leaving your small family and hometown to focus on the only thing that makes you feel like everything around you is in your control.

Growing up you liked making crazy narratives where there was always a twist at the end. You love making others wonder how are you going to finish the story. Like every book, it has chapters and your chapter begins in your new town. Now, this isn’t smart on your part but you got your new place for dirt cheap. I mean it’s empty, it only has your basic household necessities, and it’s not that bad but could be a fixer-upper.

Ignoring the fact you have barely anything in your home you take out your laptop….and head to town. You spot a cafe, decide to chill there for a bit and start doing what you love….writing. You honestly quite like this cafe and decided to write in here often, almost like your Jughead Jones.

Like every writer….sometimes we get stuck and can’t think of anything to write, you are under a lot of stress; I mean I don’t blame you, your home doesn’t even have a comfy couch, not to mention you are low on funds, like really low. Frustrated with yourself, you head home and try to figure out how you are going to pay bills and afford necessities. Yeah, you're going to need a job.

Get started: Start with a house or apartment that is practically empty it only has the basic household needs (ex: stove, fridge, bed, toilet, etc)

After a while you realize the job you have now isn't making you happy, yeah it pays the bills but it is not what you want to do.

The choices are: to quit your job or find a way to get fired and then become a freelance writer.

Generation 02 - You never really grew up

As a kid, you were always playing with the kids who lived in your neighbourhood along with your siblings. You would play at the park, build forts, have sleepovers, tell stories and watch movies super late. You did everything with them, but that didn’t last long. Unfortunately, things don’t stay the same; some of your childhood friends started to drift and do different things that interest them, which includes spending time with other kids. Even your siblings tell you they don’t have time to do these activities with you anymore. You lose all contact with your childhood buddies because all you want to do is what you always did with them, but they find it childish but you don’t.

It hurt for a while and you found it quite difficult to build friends in school because none of them were interested. But that didn’t stop you from being a kid at heart, you would go to online chat rooms and talk to people online. You would talk to a bunch of people there and end up texting and calling each other. It makes you so happy that you have people that you can connect with that don’t find your way of spending time with each other childish.

Aspiration - Leader of the pack

Goals ~

Befriend the kids in your neighbourhood or even some school kids

Collect frogs and Mysims Trophies

Always accept to hang out with friends

Call friends often

Fall out with all your childhood friends as a teen

The choices are: you rekindle a friendship with one of your ex-friends or fall in love with someone in your new friend group.

Generation 03 - Wild

You’re quite the charmer, it stands out amongst your siblings. Hey, it followed you right to high school, you were that semi-popular kid but mostly annoyed everyone with slick remarks. Well, I guess someone finds you funny because you end up finding yourself in a relationship, the two of you just clicked. You would go on dates with each other in the most random places sometimes.

College applications are starting and you have already applied, however, your lover tells you he/she doesn’t have any plans to go to college. You both decide that instead of breaking up, you have a long-distance relationship.

While at college you’re having a blast, and you tend to throw big dorm parties, like cops knocking on your door-type parties. Dorm mates secretly hate you but at least you clean up after yourself…in the morning….they can’t be mad at you forever, right?

Juggling studying, partying and a whole relationship back home, yep you didn’t think this through; the stress is getting to you but you don’t show it. But then you do something that you might regret.

Traits - Romantic, Goofball, Maker

Aspiration - Master Maker

Goals ~

Have a high school sweetheart and remain with them throughout University

Get a secret matching tattoo with your lover as a teen

Use the woodworking table to max handiness skill

Apply for University and major in business

Join the spirit squad or spirit corps (depending on which university you attend)

Throw big parties every week while at University

Call your girlfriend/boyfriend back home often

Hook up with four different sims at one of your parties

Graduate from University and join the business career

Work on inventions throughout your life and sell them for a profit (Go ahead, open that store!)

Have one kid

This Generation has a choice for the player to make. These are choices that you could build off of and integrate into your storyline. So you did cheat on your high school sweetheart during a party at university. What do you do?

Confess about cheating on your partner once you return home or never tell them what you did.

If you tell them that you cheated on them depending on how they respond, you can rekindle the love or let them go and move on. However, if you decide to never tell them you have to stay with them and have another secret hookup with one of your hook-ups from your University days. (That’s brutal….)

Generation 04 - Guilty Pleasure

I swear you just let anything fly out of your mouth! Of course, you don’t see anything wrong with it but your parents do and they are very concerned about it. That however doesn’t bother you at all, as a kid you liked to obsess over the weirdest things and would not shut up about it. If it interested you, you made sure everyone around you knew about it too.

A lot of other people you know find the things you are into very strange and none of your friends are interested in them, they think it's weird and I don’t blame them. You pick up random hobbies but can never stick to one, you also like dressing up in random costumes doing these hobbies. You are in your own little world and to you, it’s your guilty pleasure. However, being a young adult and trying to please your parents at the same time is very tricky, so you get a job in the cooking business and try your best to be responsible and work hard in your career. But knowing you that doesn’t work out, does it?

You check in with your parents every week and let them know how “amazing” you are in your career and how well life is going for you. It’s your way of showing them how much you've matured…..although what they don’t know can’t hurt them. You like to go to clubs and bars every weekend and sip a few drinks and go on stage and show the crowd how talented you are! Maybe a shot at stardom?…. Yeah in your dreams.

On one of your weekly trips to the bar you get yourself into a pickle, how are you going to cover this up now?

Traits - Lazy, Glutton, Family Oriented

Aspiration - Joke Star

Goals ~

Reach Level 5 in five different skills

Go out to eat with your parents / call them every week (while they're still alive)

Go to bars/clubs every weekend and have a few drinks before you get up on stage and do stand-up comedy

Get Pregnant or get another sim pregnant from a random hookup

This Generation has a choice for the player to make. These are choices that you could build off of and integrate into your storyline.

Oh no! Now you’ve got a kid, what are YOU going to do? Either, keep in touch with the other parent, meaning let he/she visit your kid and maybe this little hook-up could be more, or not? Up to you. Or after your child is born you keep the baby with you and never speak to the other parent again.

Generation 05 - Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego?

You can’t stand your mom/dad (Gen 4 parent) everything they do is so questionable as if they have zero idea what's going on at all times; the majority of your free time is spent watching action channels on tv or playing with action figures. You spend most of your time in your room with the door locked and you don’t care to make friends with kids your age so it’s just you. No matter how much your mom/dad tries to please you, you do not pay them any attention. You like spy movies and you decided being a secret agent is your dream job no matter what the cost was. However, being in this line of work made you quite paranoid and all of a sudden you disappeared. Where did you go?

Traits - Genius, Ambitious, Good (when you pick your career branch, change your good trait to erratic or paranoid)

Aspiration - Neighbourhood Confindate (Optional to complete)

Goals ~

Have good grades in school (child to teen)

Move out of mom/dad's house once a young adult (Get a part-time job if you have to)

Get a job as a secret agent (eventually, go into the Diamond agent branch)

You've grown quite paranoid ever since you started working as a spy. You think that in the middle of the night, someone is going to come for you, I mean I don’t know who but you do.

Pack your bags and all your belongings, leave your spouse and kids behind, move to an off-the-grid location, and lose contact with everyone you know. Quit being a spy to start a new “safe life” (that’s not messed up in the slightest, but hey who am I to judge)

In the middle of the night, you decide to wake up your spouse and tell them to get the kids and pack their packs and meet you in the car. Because all of you are moving to a new home that is far far away from your original home to start a “new life”.

Generation 06 - Globetrotter

All of a sudden your life changed overnight. Literally! Everything you once knew before is all different now, nothing feels like how it used to be and they won’t even tell you why. No one will tell you why. You started acting up as a teen; going out late at night, staying up super late, fighting, you even ran away. You only made it to a park but that was cut short because one of your parents found you, your life is a complete mess. Honestly, I don’t blame you; but apart from being angry all the time you found a hobby you quite enjoy.

Remember when I said you attempted to run away? Well, this time you steal your parent's credit card and sneak out at night to a completely different country. Who cares where it was, you just wanted to feel some adrenaline for once. On your adventure, you decided to start taking a lot of pictures of everything you saw and started engaging in conversation with the people who lived there. Your childhood was pretty much sheltered and even though your parents are frantically searching for you, you're too busy living it up overseas; might as well send a postcard!

Traits - Kelptomanic, Hot-Headed, Materialistic

Aspiration - Serial Romantic (Optional to finish)

Goals ~

Have a terrible relationship with Gen 5 parent (if they are still in your life)

Master Photography and Media Production

Have above Level 5 in writing

Go on vacation five times throughout your life or even more (you are a traveller, of course)

Every time you are on vacation make sure you vlog the experience with a drone (Pretending you have a travel channel)

This Generation has a choice for the player to make. These are choices that you could build off of and integrate into your storyline.

These are your choices; you start gaining a little following on your youtube channel but you want more and in order to do more you need money to go on more trips. You don’t have a job and you need money fast. Instead of searching for a job you decide to steal from various people in your neighbourhood without them knowing and sell it for your own gain.

You resist going down that dark path and choose a none illegal route. You pick up a job and start making money but still keep your followers posted, and every earning you get you put it towards your channel! Only time will tell if it pays off.

A small thing you've done very often with no thought, after the first time, it almost became addicting and such a natural thing to do. Whether you were going out to the library for a study, or Heeseung heading to the gaming cafe, heck, even coming back from anywhere, there has to be at least a small peck hello or goodbye.

Heeseung softly opens the door, only to find the comforting sight of you snoozing on your bed with quiet snores falling from your lips. He had come back late at night due to studying for finals, and completely forgot about the time.

"Hey baby," He whispers quietly as he slips in next to you, tapping your cheek softly.

A smile curls his lips up when you hum and stir awake, growing bigger when you smile up at him with sparkling eyes. "You're back?"

Before he can respond, you grab at his sweatshirt and pull him down to connect your lips together, almost smiling against each other. It's a short, sweet kiss, but it makes Heeseung all soft inside and crave much more.

But instead, he simply pulls away, and mumble about wanting to catch up on some sleep.

Happened the very first time you met Jay Park, your friend Jake had introduced you to each other, and to say you were swooned the moment he placed his lips softly ont he back of your hand would very much be an understatement. Ever since, it's become a thing that happened ever so often, but never failed to get you flustered.

"Good morning, my love," Jay mumbles as he walks into the dining room, where you were, munching on your breakfast.

"Hey," You simply mumble back through a mouthful of cereal. Jay chuckles upon the sight of you, his significant other, sleepily blinking up at him with a silly milk mustache.

You think nothing of it when Jay picks your hand up with his, tangling your fingers together, "So, do you want some cereal too? Or-"

Your breath hitches at your throat and seems to stay there as Jay holds your hand up to his lips and softly presses them against each other. Soft, affectionate, almost too much for you to handle at 8 in the morning.

The first time Jake kissed you, it was a very messy and clumsy kiss, in hopes of getting you to swoon for him despite being his best friend. Truth be told, you swooned for him way before he knows, but you still swooned at that moment nonetheless. Now, it's like a small trademark in your relationship to have clumsy kisses here and there, full of silly smiles and laughs.

"Noooo! Why'd the dog have to die!"

Movie nights with Jake Sim is possible the best nights of your life, filled with lots of snack, cuddles, and Layla, yes, the perfect nights. Your home away from home.

Though you have to say, you don't particularly like Jake's choice of movie tonight. Sure, the plot was fantastic and great, but the dog died and that's a definite flag for you.

"It's always the dog! Why does it always have to be the dog?!"

Jake chuckles at your protests, and begins to laugh heartily when you throw pieces of popcorn at his laptop screen, "Babe, it's just a movie,"

Before you could mutter more complaints under your breath, Jake had clasped two fingers on your chin, turned your head, and crashed his lips messily on yours. In an instant, your frown curls back up into a smile, feeling Jake's own smile against yours.

It's a sweet, very messy kiss, growing messier as you loop your arms around his neck and pull him closer. At this point you frankly don't care about the movie, it's still 2 stars from you.

Jake, however, has got to be 10 stars alright.

Sunghoon likes to keep his kisses just like you, gentle. Loves how intimate and loving it feels, and never wants to let go. The first time he kissed you ever so gently, you became ecstatic, becoming smiley all day and he adored it. Go to kiss whenever he meets up with you.

Your lips seem strangely alluring to Sunghoon. It maybe the worst time to think that, as you were literally ranting and letting out your weekly stress because of so many assignments, but he really can't help. How they purse and part with each word you say, it's almost calling him in.

You stop to look at your boyfriend, who had been awfully quiet as you raged, finding him wide eyed, staring at something around your chin. Did you perhaps spit or something? "What?"

Sunghoon's fingers encircle around your wrist and he tugs you softly towards him to lean down and softly push his lips between yours. It's all so sudden, though when you relax, it's as soft as ever, leaving your breathless once again.

You part just for a spilt second, sucking in breaths, before your lips meet again and you sigh. Sunghoon's gentle kisses never failed to make you soft.

The most loving sensation you've ever felt, Sunoo's extra special cheek kisses, as he would like to call them. They truly were extra special, not only one kiss to the cheek, but multiple butterfly kisses traced along one cheek to the other. You do this to Sunoo too sometimes, and he calls them your extra extra special cheek kisses.

It's times like these when you really need comfort, those days where you feel extremely tired from all the school work and just everything in general. It's times like these where you long for comfort. And comfort you have, perched right next to you, with his hand softly stroking along your hair and hugging you every so tightly.

Kim Sunoo knew every time when you feel down, how could he not? Your not so subtle sighs and drowsy, glossy eyes staring up at him, it's like you were begging to be comforted.

Just as you feel a tear trickle down your cheek, the cold feeling is gone, instead a soft sensation of Sunoo's lips kissing the tear away replaces it's spot, before he starts pecking affectionately along your cheeks with extra care. His hands hold your face in place as his lips travel from your cheek, along your nose bridge, all the way to your other cheek.

His extra special cheek kisses feel especially extra at these times, when you need him the most.

Not too intimate, not too little, just right for your relationship. You're still trying to figure things out, but you know one thing, that the both of you die for forehead kisses. Just so soft and simple, not too much for you to have trouble attempting. Jungwon once tried it and found you became so much more comfortable about intimate things now.

You stare hardly down at the physics text book you brought along with you to the library, a small burning fire of determination flaring within you to study for the physics test you had next week.

You would totally ask your big brain boyfriend to tutor you, but he's already been tutoring so many people, you didn't dare bother him more.

So instead, you used the small study tips and guide he gave you a few weeks ago when you asked for some. To your surprise he left lots, and made your own little brochure of a study guide just for you.

Boyfriend of the month? Yang Jungwon for sure.

Though, you find yourself finding it hard to study physics, with all it's terms and formulas, it became a lot harder than you thought.

To your surprise, just an hour later, you find Jungwon sitting next to you with his own physics text book. He offered to help you, but you refused politely, requesting to study on your own and have your own self satisfaction.

"Alright, whatever you say," You grow a bit disappointed at his response, before you become shocked at the small peck he leaves your forehead. Small, subtle, but very impactful on you. You suddenly feel very determined.

— butterfly kisses scattered along one's face

First time he pulled this, Niki found comfort in the laughs you let out, and the feeling of your skin against his lips, he grew satisfied and unsatisfied at the same time. He craved more and more until he's done it so many times that you know just when he's going to do it. Niki finds it awfully giddy when you do it to him too.

Niki's house seems more of a home to you than your own house, and yours to him. You think it's because of how his mother never fails to spoil you and offer you to sleepover. She's a true sweetheart.

And Bisco is especially someone you love too, as if she was the pet you never had.

(idk if bisco is a girl or boy even niki forgot himself LMAOO)

In the midst of petting the dog and scrolling through instagram, sudden rapid footsteps resonate through the hallway, and before you know it, Niki has rushed next to you and flopped his whole body on top of you.

"RIKI!"

You are cut off by your own laughs when Niki starts pecking all over your face, trailing from your chin, to your cheeks, all the way to your eyelids, he showers his love and laughs along against your skin when you try to push him off.

Though, you want to pull him closer as well and show your love in the form of deathly grips people like to call 'hugs'.

Ship: Emily Prentiss x BAU! fem ! reader

Word count: .9k

Warnings: Set during the Doyle arc, canon-typical violence, break-up, threats, implication of threat, gun mention. Basically, just what you’d expect from a fic based on the Doyle arc.

A/N: Did i have too much fun writing this? Yeah

Emily sat across from him, clutching the long-cold coffee in her hands and trying to hide the horror on her face as he speaks.

“Does the lovely Penelope know the truth about you? Or is she too busy watching movies with Derek to care? Here you are, all alone,” Doyle smiles, “While Aaron sits at home with his son. Why didn’t Dave and Ashley invite you to their game night? Maybe they thought you’d be on the Metro with Dr. Reid. That one does have some quirks. They certainly can’t have thought you’d be having dinner with ____ tonight though, could they? No, they don’t know anything about you and her.”

Emily balls her hand into a fist, “You go near my team and I’ll kill you.”

“Just your team? Is that all?”

“Yes.”

He scoffs, “Pathetic. Where does she think you are right now?”

Emily doesn’t speak. She presses her lips together in a fine line, waiting.

“That’s what I thought. You’ve always been good at lying to the people you love.”

“What do you want?” She spits.

“I don’t want your team. I don’t even want her, though I should. But my quarrel isn’t with them. How long that remains the case depends entirely on you. They’re innocent. She’s innocent. You’re not.”

“I was doing my job.”

“You won’t even acknowledge her to me when I’m offering to spare her life. Funny way of showing you care about her, Emily,” He chuckles, shaking his head.

Her knuckles are white from tensing them, the coffee cup splitting in her hand, tiny drips of it making her palm wet.

“It doesn’t matter anyway. You obviously don’t care about her. You never cared about me, after all. I only care about taking something important to you. The most important thing to you. Your life.”

You’re sat at home on the couch with Sergio when Emily comes through the door, shrugging off her scarf and heading straight into the kitchen.

“What’s wrong?” You ask, taking a step towards her as she starts vigorously washing her hands, “Emily what’s wrong?”

“I think you should go home tonight.”

“Emily, what-?”

She cuts you off, “I’m just. I’m not feeling good, I think you should go home tonight.”

You step towards her again, watching as she braces her hands against the counter behind her, “You’re never feeling good lately. Something has to be going on here and you can’t keep hiding it from me. Everyone has been talking about you. Worrying about you.”

“It’s very nice of you all to be concerned enough to gossip behind my back,” She snaps.

“Emily I’m your girlfriend. They’re our friends.”

“Why are they even asking you about it anyway? They don’t know we’re together.”

That hurts. It burns, seers into your chest. You open your mouth to respond but flounder. She notices the shock in your eyes, wants to apologise. Then Doyle’s words reverberate in her head and her own die in her throat.

“I don’t need you all to be talking about me.”

“And I don’t need you to be lying to me.”

“I’m not lying to you.”

“Then tell me what’s wrong.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“You can’t just act like nothings wrong when it is!” You’re shouting now, the frustration of weeks of being patient and understanding finally flaming out. Her eyes remain defiant, and anger flares in your chest.

“Nothing is wrong.”

“Then why are you being like this?”

“I’m not being like anything.”

“I’m your girlfriend, Emily.”

“Well maybe you shouldn’t be.”

It crushes you. Hard and fast, like a cartoon boulder falling on your head. You swear you’re seeing stars, dizzy with confusion and hurt, but she’s cold. Refuses to meet your eye.

“H-Have you been wanting to break up with me? Is that why?” You ask, your hand coming to rest over your mouth.

“Yes. That’s why.”

She doesn’t stop you leaving. Doesn’t move from her spot in the kitchen, doesn’t see you walk out in a complete daze. Forgetting your coat and umbrella, stumbling out into the pouring rain with no idea where you’re going. It was you. This whole time it was you.

You think of the nights spent, trying to fall asleep without her. Her side of the bed cold, while she sat in the kitchen frowning at the laptop screen she wouldn’t show you. What had she been doing? She’d said old Interpol cases. But what was it really? All those times she’d offered to stay with Morgan on cases, fobbing you off with excuses about how she found it easier to stay focused on work without you around. Trying to make out like it was a good thing. Like you were too much of a distraction.

It’s dark on the street, all the lamp lights blearing through your tears. If you weren’t so focused on the blindsighting pain in your chest, you might have been able to count on your FBI training, or basic common sense, and noticed the SUV trailing behind you.

Emily crumples into herself on the kitchen floor. All those nights she’d left you to sleep alone, terrified that if she wasn’t awake, someone would break in to hurt you. How she’d sit staring out her laptop, trying to stump up something about Doyle that could put an end to all this. How she’d tried her best to avoid you on cases because you knew. You always knew when something was wrong. Knew her tells better than Spencer.

How she’d let your heart shatter in two, under the guise of protecting you.

Out on the street, you register the sound of a gun click.
