We decided to go to Tuscany this April. I have always wanted to see this part of Italy and I wanted to do it on my own. There are direct flights from Budapest to Pisa (for example Ryanair and Wizzair fly there too), so I booked the plane tickets and I was looking at the different car rental companies’ offers, at the end I chose Sicily by Car. DAY 1 / 1. NAP – Pisa

We arrived in Pisa, we picked up our car and we went to the city to see the Leaning Tower and the Square of Miracles (Campo dei Miracoli) with the Cathedral, Baptistery and the Cemetery. Our hotel was outside the city, much to our surprise the dirt road there was full of bumps and potholes. Never mind, it was fun driving along the cypresses 🙂 Megérkeztünk Pisába, átvettük a kocsit és elmentünk az óvárosba, hogy megnézzük a Ferde Tornyot és a Csodák terét (Campo dei Miracoli) a Katedrálissal, a Keresztelőkápolnával és a Temetővel. A szállodánk a városon kivül volt, nagy meglepetésünkre a föld út, amin meg kellett közeliteni tele volt kátyukkal. Nem baj, a ciprusokkal szegélyezett uton nagyon élveztük a vezetést 🙂

DAY 2 / 2. NAP – Viareggio – Torre de Lago – Lucca

we went to Viareggio to see the beach and the promenade. Originally I wanted to go to the Cinque Terre, but to drive there for 3 hours, take some pictures from some lookout points and drive back, it wasn’t worth our time. The next stop was at Torre de Lago to see the Puccini villa (unfortunately it was closed so from outside we admired it). And the last stop for this day was LUCCA, a very cute little town, famous for the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro (it was a Roman Amphitheatre), the Guinigi Tower (there are trees on the top of it) and the Palazzo Pfanner (an elegant palace with a garden from the 17th century).

Pisa – Viareggio 30 mins (25 km) Viareggio – Torre del Lago 15 mins (we were lost so 30 mins for us) (7 km) Torre del Lago – Lucca 30 mins (27 km) Lucca – Pisa 30 mins (18 km)

Viareggioba mentünk, hogy megnézzük a strandot és a sétányt. Eredetileg a Cinque Terre-hezakartam menni, de 3 órán át vezetni, pár képet csinálni néhány kilátóból és utána visszavezetni, csak elvesztegetett idő lett volna. A következő megálló a Torre de Lago volt, hogy megnézzük a Puccini villát (sajnos zárva volt, így csak kívülről csodáltuk meg). A legutolsó állomás pedig LUCCA lett, egy nagyon aranyos kisváros, ahol a Piazza dell’Anfiteatro (római amfiteátrum), a Guinigi-torony (tetején fákkal) és a Palazzo Pfanner (elegáns palota kerttel a XVII. századból) voltak a fö látványosságok.

DAY 3 / 3. NAP – San Gimignano – San Galgano – Siena

We left our Hotel in Pisa where we had spent 2 night and left for the South direction San Gimignano. It is like stepping back in time, we admired for at least 2 hours this medieval hill town: narrow streets, old houses, food stores where they sell typical cold cuts (of e.g boar), truffles, wines. We didn’t miss the Torture and Death Museums. We left for the Abbey of San Galgano, a Gothic style building without roofs. There are wedding ceremonies often held her. Amazing building. We didn’t stay here long because the journey continued to Siena, where we spent the next night. After checking-in in our hotel we went to see the Piazza del Campo (main square where the palio -horse race – takes place every year in the summer) with the Torre de Mangia, we had some red wine at this square.

Pisa – San Gimignano 1,5 hrs (80 km) San Gimignano – San Galgano 1 hr (53 km) San Galgano – Siena 45 mins (45 km)

Elhagytuk a pisai hotelünket, ahol 2 éjszakát töltöttünk és déli irányba, San Gimignano felé tartottunk. Olyan volt, mintha visszamentünk volna az időben, legalább két órát sétáltunk ebben a középkori hangulatu városban: keskeny utcák, régi házak, élelmiszerboltok, ahol tipikus felvágottakat (pl vaddisznó), szarvasgombát, borokat árulnak. Nem hagytuk ki a kínzás és a halál múzeumokat sem (Death and Torture Museums). Utána a San Galgano apátság jött, ami egy gótikus stílusú tető nélküli épület. Még esküvőket is tartanak itt. Csodálatos volt. Nem maradtunk sokáig, mert Siena felé folytattuk, ahol a következő éjszakát töltöttük. Miután becsekkoltunk a hotelbe meglátogattuk a Piazza del Campo-t (a főtér, ahol nyaranta megrendezésre kerül a palio – lóverseny) a Torre de Mangia-val és megkóstoltuk a hires vörösborokat.

Pisa – San Gimignano 1,5 óra (80 km) San Gimignano – San Galgano 1 óra (53 km) San Galgano – Siena 45 perc (45 km)

DAY 4 / 4. NAP – Chianti

We spent the whole day driving along the Chiantigiana Road to Florence, we saw the typical Tuscan countryside: olive trees, vineyards, hills with mansions and cypress trees, small villages. We stopped at: San Gusme, Radda in Chianti, Volpaia, Castellina in Chianti, Badia a Passignano monastery, Montefioralle. The most beautiful day during the whole trip. We arrived in the late afternoon to the Piazzale Michalengelo to admire the view over Florence and to see the sunset. We spent in Florence the following 2 days in a hotel from where we had such a view 🙂 Fantastic!!!

Siena – San Gusme – Radda in Chianti – Volpaia – Castellina in Chianti – Badia a Passignano – Montefioralle – Florence (125 km)

Késő délután érkeztünk a Piazzale Michalengelo-ra, Firenzébe, hogy megcsodáljuk a kilátást és megnézzük a naplementét. Firenzében töltöttük a következő 2 napot, a szallodánkból ilyen volt a kilátás 🙂 Fantasztikus!

Day 5 / 5. NAP – Florence / Firenze

Afterwards we continued our walk to the Duomo, to the Mercato Centrale (market) to have some lunch, to the Uffizzi Gallery (just from outside, to get inside takes 2 hours), to the Ponte Vecchio (oldest bridge of the town) and to the Piazza della Signoria (Loggia dei Lanzi open-air gallery of renaissance sculptures, copy of Michelangelo’s David) FIRENZE gyalog. DAY 6 / 6. NAP – Florence / Firenze

We had only a half day left in Florence 😦 time flies so fast when you are enjoying yourselves, we decided we wanted to see the Boboli Garden and the Bardini Garden. It was a bit difficult to go up the hill to visit the latter one but we like challenges. After a delicious lunch in Florence we slowly went to direction Pisa Airport to fly back in the evening.

Florence – Pisa 1,5 hrs – 85 km

Már csak fél nap maradt Firenzében 😦 az idő olyan gyorsan elrepül, amikor jól érzi magát az ember… Elhatároztuk, hogy megnézzük a Boboli kertet és a Bardini kertet. Az utóbbihoz felmenni a dombra elég nehéz volt, de mi szeretjük a kihívásokat. Majd egy utolsó ebéd után lassan a pisai repülőtér felé indultunk, hogy este visszarepüljünk.

Altogether we had 4 days and 2 half days, we drove more than 450 km, we visited more than 15 towns/cities/villages 🙂 Összesen 4 nap és 2 fél nap volt, több, mint 450 km-t vezettünk,  több, mint 15 várost  / falut látogattunk meg 🙂

  If I hadn’t worked some years ago in Sicily I am not sure if I would have had the courage to go on this road trip. Driving in the countryside was easy but in Florence, I had to be as “crazy” as the Italians. Parking is a catastrophe, there are traffic jams everywhere, there are no clear sings where to go to just after it is too late to turn…etc. But we managed it 🙂 One of the most beautiful journeys we did. I can’t choose which day was my favourite, which town was the best, which sight was the most interesting. The whole was amazing, just look at my pictures you can see how we enjoyed it. Of course I will write details about each day, what to visit, what not to visit, how I suggest you to visit…:) Ha évekkel ezelőtt nem dolgoztam volna Szicíliában, nem vagyok biztos abban, hogy el mertem volna menni erre az útra. A parkolás egy katasztrófa, mindenütt forgalmi dugók vannak, nincsenek egyértelmü táblák jelezve merre menjünk csak miután már elhagytuk, ahol le kellett volna fordulni … stb. De végül minden sikerült 🙂 Az egyik legszebb utazásunk, nem tudom eldönteni, melyik nap volt a kedvencem, melyik város volt a legjobb, melyik látnivalo volt a legérdekesebb. Az egész fantasztikus volt, nézzétek csak meg a képeimet. Természetesen részletesen írok majd minden napról, mit nézzetek meg, mit ne nézzetek meg, mit hogyan nézzetek meg… 🙂

There’s a venue here in Denver that reminds me of the home my grand-parents built in Northern California… tan stucco arches and dark brown tiled floors, it’s not something you typically see here in Colorado. The lighting is always so beautiful here and as a Photographer, that’s something I notice while shooting weddings. If this venue were around back when I got married, I definitely would have had my own wedding there, without a doubt. It’s called the Villa Parker, and I’ve always dreamed of what my wedding would have looked like here. This past September, I finally got to see my vision in real life!

I’m in love with Italy…in fact, it’s my favorite country to visit. The Mediterranean climate and landscape, reminds me of home back in Northern California. I wanted this shoot to be as authentic as Colorado could do it. Wallflower Décor brought the rustic table we used for the “antipasti” and “dolce” set up, and the wine barrels & boxes for the bar (which were borrowed from the wine aficionado from Elway’s in Cherry Creek - fancy! They went above and beyond to get everything I wanted for the shoot.

Antipasti – this was a challenge getting together! Italians love their food and it just wouldn’t be an Italian shoot without it! Being that it’s September, and the busiest month for Colorado weddings, I couldn’t find one catering company that would commit to helping with this project, even with begging and pleading. I completely get it. With time running out, I decided to just do it myself and picked up a few key ingredients at Tony’s Meat Market, a high-end gourmet deli and market. 

How beautiful the table-scape came out! It was so much fun picking out the details at the Event Rents showroom. They were extremely helpful on this shoot and I just loved how everything looked together! The classic flatware and stunning glassware filled the table and it made me swoon the way the lighting came through the cut crystal goblets! 

For the florals, I could really only see that soft greyish green of olive leaves, mixed with lots of texture and maybe a subtle pop of citrus. Pam from Petals ‘N Grapes nailed it. She saw I was looking for a florist and was all over it!

I made a batch of Italian wedding soup, a charcuterie board with Italian meats & cheeses, bruschetta & tapenade, meatballs & marinara, caprese skewers, and an “olive bar” with Italian olive oils and balsamic vinegars.

Speaking of Italian olive oils and balsamic vinegars, I just had to have little bottles as “favors”. There was only one choice in my mind, and that’s Lucero. American Olive Farmers since 1947 in Corning, a rural Far Northern California community known for producing delicious olive oil for over a century, Lucero is the “standard”, period. One of my friends from high school got married a few years back and had sample bottles of Lucero for her guests, and I brought home as many as I could (and coveted them till they ran out). I loved that idea and wanted it for this shoot. Due to my fan-girl status, they agreed to work with me and sent a case of the most perfect product for us to use! We had the Taggiasca extra virgin olive oil, accompanied with the Bianco white balsamic vinegar and adorable little bottles.

Italians are revered for their wine, Prosecco, Lemoncello, and even sangria (I know it’s more Spanish, but that still counts for Mediterranean). Peak Beverage, Colorado’s premier beverage catering service was the most perfect choice.

Adam, the owner, brought plenty of beautiful bottles to fill the bar with, and made us some authentic Italian cocktails! They photographed beautifully and he included the recipes and featured wines below:

Summer Thyme Spritz

1 1/2 oz gin, 1/2 oz Thyme Simple Syrup, and 1/2 oz Lemon Juice. Top with soda water and garnish with lemon wedges and fresh Thyme in Collins glass.

Classic Negroni

1 oz London Dry Gin, 1 oz Campari, and 1 oz Contratto Rosso Vermouth. Stir and serve in coupe. Garnish with orange peel

Rosemary Sangria

4 oz Italian Red Wine (We used Santa Christina Toscana), 1/2 oz Blood Orange Liqueur (Solerno), 1/2 oz Rosemary Simple Syrup, and 1/2 oz Leopold's Blackberry Whiskey. Top with lemon-lime soda and serve in wine glass over ice. Garnish with blackberry, rosemary sprig, and orange (blood orange if available).

Dolce… the best part! Of course, there were the must-haves… cannolis, tiramisu, and gelato! Rene with Little Bites Bakery did a beautiful job with little tiramisu cups (YUM), some shortbread cookies, biscotti, and cake pops! We also had some super yummy tiramisu macaroons from Honeycomb that were the bomb-diggity (I ate most of them myself after the shoot) :O I was not able to find anyone to do actual gelato (ice cream yes, but not gelato), so we did it ourselves anyway. Bringing all of these things together are the hand-lettered signage done by my pal Krista with Always Rooted.

You can’t have a wedding without cake! This was masterfully made for us by the amazing Kelley Kakes! Even though this particular cake is actually Styrofoam filled, we imagine the insides to be lemon buttermilk pound cake with fresh berries, or perhaps a banana cake with Nutella mousse filling (reminding us of those crepes we had on the street in Venice that one time…). She also offers Italian rum cake or white chocolate cappuccino cake with a variety of decadent fillings. With Kelley the options are endless, even when it comes to the design – she is pretty freakin’ amazing!

One of the coolest things we’ve seen in our many years of shooting weddings is The Espresso Affair, a coffee bar catering company. Say what? Yes, you can actually have a catered coffee bar for your event, and Bill’s team knows how to do it right! Their set up is not only impressive, but they actually know how to make everything on the menu to perfection. 

Special thanks to my Assistant Missy for helping out so much on this shoot!! The girls from the Villa were wonderful and set up was perfection. Thanks to my Dad for knowing a guy who knows a guy…
