My bestie will be here next week for our annual (sometimes biannual, but not in many years) art retreat and she requested that we do some dyeing for needle felting. I ordered ~15 lbs of various wool tops and have been slowly dyeing up a rainbow of colors for us to play with. But! The magic of art retreat is we never know what we're going to spend the week making and I can't wait to see the nonsense that unfolds.
Our art retreat in February of 2020 was my first exploration of the stained glass painting series. (This video cracks me up every time...)

As well as playing around with merthur-inspired poetry (though she didn't know it was fandom-y lol)

I taught her to watercolor in 2019, she made fabric intestines in 2020, I painted in my handmade fanARTifact leather journal when I went to see her in 2022, we carved stamps and embossed in 2023.

The Hero of Eve was a scholar. While the whole group bore a higher education (they were Kings, of course, they would), the man prided himself on being one of the most knowledgeable- while the others grew a fondness for the study of the blade or the politics of the people, you had found out Eve had spent his many decades with his nose in a book, learning one new thing after the other just because he could.
He reminded you of Klaus Baudelaire, with a twitch of the fingers and a narrow of the eyes he knew exactly what to do, you wandered, similar to the movie if in his mind the spines of the books popped into his head, the titles flashing and suddenly he was an encyclopedia- filled to the brim with knowledge and waiting to spill pages upon pages of facts right into your eager brain.
“Not those.” Looking upon the assortment of berries dotted about the very pretty shrubbery, you caught the eyes of Eve standing over you, his wicker basket resting against his hip almost filled to the brim compared to your own basket, near empty save for the odd blueberry or raspberry that you had managed to find. “They’re poisonous, and the worse kind.”
“But…Pastuzo is eating them?”
Glancing at the bear, you both watched the great beast carefully nibble away at a branch that he had ripped off, the bush being the one currently sitting in front of your crouched self. The furry beast had decided to stick with you lot after the incident with Nature, the instance hanging over his head as very useful blackmail that had gotten you the best part of his meals which he would usually save for himself, his eyes like a sad puppy’s as you happily munched away with a malicious grin that almost had him crying.
You digress, your new companion refused to part after the scene almost a week ago, following you around the dense forest of Hyrule and leaving many wary. Not a pet in any way, more a friend, allowing you to pet his ears and cuddle into his fluff during colder nights- you had called him Pastuzo because Paddington didn’t quite suit him.
“Your…friend,” The man had started, turning back to you. “Has a stomach of iron, he also isn’t affected by the key ingredients like we are.”
A pout crawled onto your face and you sighed, lending your hands to the bear to sniff the berries then hover them gently from your palms, ridding his saliva on your already dirty leggings.
You felt useless, even worse than you had before back with the Chain. Sure, you were adjusting to a new way of living with the Ganons but that didn’t mean you couldn’t help out as much as you could- you’d jumped on the opportunity to forage, memories of doing such with Hyrule and Wild hurting your heart before you pushed it down for the sake of your new chore, grabbing the basket Tide had handed you gently then venturing off with the Scholar to gather what you needed.
Now here you were, with nothing to show for it but a bunch of random fruit.
Eve sighed, crouching down to your heart (even then still towering over you) and digging into one of his pouches to pull out the smallest of books, handing it over to you while you studied it curiously.
“What’s this?”
It bore no name, nor designs, just a simple leather-bound book with a clasp that you gently pulled away.
“A journal of my findings.” You carefully skipped through the pages, eyes running through the walls of texts with accompanied neat sketches- bugs, animals, flora and fauna- anything he had seen was jotted down on the handmade paper. “You may use it, it will tell you which is dangerous and which is not-”
The man grunted when you hugged him, tightly with a grateful squeeze as you sung his praises and your thanks before scrolling through the book once again. You ran off with your basket to continue your foraging, book ready at the ready while you studied the plants and the smallest of smiles bloomed on Eve’s face.
You both returned with baskets full.

What would the ideal Christmas present be for the ROs? 👁
N: some peace and quiet lol jk, a phone call with their sister :/ N isn’t really big on receiving gifts, I’d say they’d really like some noise cancelling headphones
F: a game system which is, admittedly, expensive so they’ll be content with a game or even merch from their favorite game: Dungeon Cross (yes I made it up for the story and yes, it’s not a very original name lol)
K: a vintage copy of one of their favorite books or some niche knickknack like a gilded pen used by some famous author or something lol
Perry: he’d love something handmade and sentimental, like a knitted hat or a scrapbook of some sort. But he’d also be happy with a novelty mug from a store. It’s truly the thought that counts for him.
Alex: Alex is very practical. When asked what they want for a Christmas, they say something like “socks” or “coat hangers.” Granted, Alex has never actually celebrated Christmas before coming to the house, and even now they still don’t know the way to do things lol…
Dani: a new, leather bound journal and some stationary is the best gift anyone could ever give Dani. They always wanted their initials engraved in one.
E: E works on Christmas so bringing food to their office to eat while they work is the best gift they can get, but something physical would be one of those foot massager things or a coupon to a Spa lol (which they’d never have time to use but yk!)
Bonus: Andrei: literally anything. Especially expensive. That man is shallow.

If Leonardo listened closely, he'd be able to hear the most curious assortment of noises outside his lit window — A quiet scraping against the brick, a muffled jingle a-jangling ever closer, and finally, an impatient rap-tap-tapping on his windowsill — Standard practice for them, perhaps, but when granted entry, Edward comes spilling into the other boy's room with distinctly more gusto and jingling than usual, owed partially to the hat adorned with a bell that goes spilling to the floor with him with a yelp and a cackle.
He doesn't revel in the tumble overlong though, rolls and leaps back to his feet so fast a lesser man might get whiplash. He's a man with a mission! He's a man with a gift to deliver di-rect-ly to its recipient with all the grace and nowhere near as close the stealth of the Winter Envoy themself!
"Leonardo!!!" Edward looks like there's a thousand thousand things he wants to do at once, aglow with energy, but stuck in a split second of indecision between slinging his arms around the other, throwing confetti and hollering 'HAPPY WINTER FESTIVAL' and immediately shoving the wrapped gift in his hands into Leonardo's. He decides to mash 'em all up, instead, dragging Leonardo into a hug, parting with a cheer for the season while pressing his wrapped parcel into the other's hands; Expectantly, Edward gestures with something between a handwring and a fistpump. "Open it, open it!" he chants, until the other does.
Inside is a little journal, the kind that would fit in any realistic pocket, the paper disorderly in a way you know it must be hand-pressed and uncut, bound in leather and blue string, bound by a matching leather cord — A loop on the inside holds a little feather charm, specifically with the ones Edward knows Leonardo likes using for fletching, kept in place with a simple string braid and a couple of beads. On the first page, painstakingly written so its legible: FROM EDWARD, with a smiley face drawn in the corner below it. The paper isn't his work, and he did need to ask around a bit to figure out how to do the rest, but…
Proudly, Edward beams. "Here, for you. So you can take notes wherever you go!"
His first reaction to the orchestra of whatever that is reaching him from the outside is confusion, followed quickly by a well familiar feeling of "ah". The familiar signal distracts him from studying the gift he had received from Pelleas in greater detail - which is fine, books can wait and Edward certainly cannot - and he gets up from his seat to open the window, as though this was a perfectly normal occurrence, which he supposes in some ways, it is.
From anyone else, this would not be such a welcome surprise, but the knowledge of the visitor's identity prompts a smile. Yeah, in retrospect, he expected that, did he not? Or at least, he should have.
And so, the gateway is opened and Leonardo takes a step back to allow the other some room, and some room is certainly needed as the other boy tumbles into his room, prompting a soft chuckle from the blond right on the spot. He is then swiftly pulled into a hug - one he returns, arms wrapped around the other tightly up until he begins to move again - and a gift is pressed into his hands.
"Alright, alright, haha. What, will it get bad if I take a minute too long? Hang on..."
He removes the wrapping and smiles brightly as he spends a moment examining the journal. "This is handmade? I didn't expect you to go this far... It looks wonderful, and it will definitely be useful." Edward knows him well, but to say that is to say nothing at all - they are, after all, not just best friends, but next to family, as they have been for years. To that end...
"I'll treasure it, thank you. Now just a moment - I was going to find you later, but since you were faster..."
With that, he makes his way over to his cupboard; opening the door, from the upper shelf, he withdraws a small package of his own and hands it to the other, his expression warm as he does. "You didn't expect to be the only one gifting something today, I hope."
Should Edward open it, he would find a few tools that, in spite of being very necessary for someone like him, were not always a given for him to have easy access to: a handy metal file, a small whetstone and a little bottle of oil for it, some sandpaper, and a pocket-sized block of wood.
"I wanted to go for something practical, and I know you don't always have an easy time finding sword sharpening tools, so I decided to get you a set that's easy for you to carry even just in your pockets. Hope it comes in handy." And helps keep you safe. The last part is left unspoken, but hangs in between them nonetheless.
"Happy holidays, Edward."
This time, Leonardo is the one to initiate an embrace anew.

When Sakura returns to her quarters, surprise may take her at the sight of a wreath hanging from the door. A note is carefully clipped to the leaves of the wreath, stating that her Winter Envoy has dropped off her gift on her nightstand and they wish her the best of holidays. There’s a compliment or two within the letter, as well. When entering the room, just as the Winter Envoy wrote, Sakura is able to see items placed on her nightstand.
The first gift from the Winter Envoy is the flower wreath at the door. White ribbons woven neatly among the pink flowers. The flowers and ribbons are gathered along the left curve of the wreath, while the right is bare— if not for the metallic charms pinned to the twigs and vines. There are a few of them; five to be exact. Simple elements, of course. A sun, a moon, a petal, a heart, and a musical note.
The items on the nightstand consist of two journals and a pair of gloves. Both the journals and the pair of gloves are made of smooth leather, of a reasonable weight and feel. The journals have Sakura’s name engraved into the covers, a neat cursive below a drawn heart, disconnected at the ends. A small, Lady, is written above in the top corner of her name. One journal has parchment that comes with lines across the paper, fit for organized writing. The other has blank, unlined paper.
Atop the journals, most likely set to the side, are the pair of gloves; made, too, out of leather. The material has been dyed to a fresh ivory, though it’s obvious that the dye will not come off even after a strict washing. Upon closer inspection, Sakura will find that sakura petals have been drawn on the back of the gloves. A note inside the first gloves’ padded interior says that the gloves will protect Sakura’s hands when she goes out to collect and gather herbs for work.
As she finally managed to come back to her room, a glimpse of surprise got her expression and make it turned into a really pleasant smile as she eyed the verdant flower wreath: it was finely realized, a handmade product that utterly surprised Sakura, since not so many people she knew were capable of such work. The details, the accuracy of the colours, the gentle touch of the charms pinned together with the intertwined flowers… simply magnific. She was speechless. And the letter caught her off guard too, with the invitation of getting inside to discover the rest of the gifts.
Swiftly, hands quivering with enthusiasm, she gently collected the flower wreath and pushed the doorhandle down, opening the door to immediately find out the beautiful thought that the Secret Winter Envoy has brought to her: on the nightstand near her bed – like it was written on the letter – there were two splendid journals and a pair of gloves, all made of leather. With much curiosity and happiness, the petite priestess put the flower wreath on her desk, carefully, and approached the items on the nightstand. The two journals were decorated with her initials and they were actually perfect for her: she could arrange all her scripts and notes of the herbs she collected in the fields, plus keeping them clean and ordered, since she was usually used to write on flying papers instead.
A big improvement for me, she giggled as she now shifted her gaze towards the gloves, a detailed garment made of leather as well as the two journals, but with a brilliant ivory coverage and some pretty cute cherry blossoms’ petals drawings all over the back of the pair. Inside, another note, this time enhancing the fact she could use the gloves for her gathering adventures, as the mysterious sender perfectly knew that she usually didn’t mind that much about protection and such.
“Who could have been so thoughtful—Azama maybe? she giggled at the thought of him packing all the stuff for her. “He definitely knew about my passion”, but then another name popped in her mind.
“Hilda! She does have a very soft character and a protective attitude…” she liked to think this way of her, even if she might not. “Whoever was though, this is the best gift I ever received” and she picked the gloves and she tightened them to her chest, wishing to give the very same hug and warmth to the person who gifted her with such precious objects.

Update on Handmade Journal
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I think I have almost finished with the hand made real leather journal. I've never done any leather crafting before, but I decided to give it a go after some inspiration from other blogs and watching a few YouTube tutorials.
It's quite difficult to tell the exact colouring of the journal used in the show due to lighting/angles etc...Of course we know its brown, but some shots it shows very dark brown and others much lighter.
I then discovered the 'behind the scenes' set tour of Supernatural over on 'thetvaddict.com' here and could see some clearer shots of the screen used journal.
I tried to get as close to this as possible. I have tried to capture the above images of the journal I have made in the best possible lighting to show its true colour.
I of course expected, and did, make a few mistakes along the way. What I have learned is, leather dye can be very tricky to work with as you can't (well I couldn't) tell the outcome of the colouring until its actually dry, resulting in the leather coming out too dark; so I had to play around a bit and strip it back down with de-glazer and had a few attempts to get the result I wanted.
I also messed up a little of the stitching - I don't know how it happened, but once I noticed I tried to amend it in the best way I could.
Overall, I think it's came out 'ok' - not perfect by a long shot, but I think I have got to the stage where it's as good as it's going to be within my skillset. Honest opinions and criticism welcome!
Here's a few pictures of the screen used journal:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tinkered around after dyeing the leather with the Fiebing's Tan-Kote however I didn't like how this looked and was blotchy, so never used it for the journal.
The products I used for de-glazer and dye was Fiebing's :
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Prep Work was basically cutting the leather to the correct size, punching the holes (which I did not find easy) gluing some parts together to stay in place before stitching and then putting it all together. The left side of the journal was the hardest as I went through 5 layers of leather in a single stitch on the left hand side.
The 3-ring binder I could not find anywhere online for shipment to the UK, not the correct mechanism or size; so in the end I just bought another Con*Quest journal only to use the binder from it.
I bought the leather from Amazon and it was called Cowhide Leather in 12x24 inch sheets.
The only thing left to do with the journal now is to add on the 'HW' indent and transfer the pins and contents of the journal from the Con*Quest journal to this one.

@ikkaku-of-heart asked: “Despite your best efforts, it looks like you made it another year,” Ikkaku teased, giving Law a warm, loving hug. She’d been eagerly anticipating his birthday for weeks now, as she’d been putting together his gifts bit by bit. Some of them she figured he’d already gotten a peak of due to his regular scanning of the ship, but others she was confident he hadn’t quite been able to spoil himself for. The first gift was a thick coat that was a fairly convincing imitation of leopard fur in both appearance and texture. The next was a few new shirts, with the unspoken promise that his thieving engineer would let him actually wear them a few times before they inevitably found their way to her closet. But then there were the gifts Law couldn’t have known the contents of, even with his powers. One was a sort of handmade coupon book. Inside were slips of paper he could redeem for things like massages, first pick of morgue ice cream flavors, and even two whole opportunities for her to not argue with him on something (some exceptions apply, see fine print for details). The other item was a journal detailing their various cryptid hunts. It was a mix of chronicling the legends surrounding the beasts they’d gone after and detailed descriptions of just how cool Law had been taking them down and capturing them. “Happy birthday, Law,” she said with a bright grin, kissing him on the cheek. “I promise the journal is a lot less thirsty for monsters than you’re probably assuming. I figured you didn’t need any extra trauma with your gifts. Now hurry up and change! You gotta look sharp for your party!” Unprompted
Tumblr media
Law rises from his desk, stretching out his back after a last minute period of work before the party for his birthday can start. Ikkaku doesn't knock when she comes in, simply throws open the door and presents him with both snark and his gifts. The doctor can't help the small smile that touches his features. The firsts thing he takes is the coat, fingers already toying with the fur and appreciating the calming affect it has on him. He hums in appreciation, liking the colour and form. Yep, he's definitely wearing this today.
The shirts get an appreciative once over but Law has a policy about wearing jackets without shirts so none of those are getting worn today. Then comes the coupon book and it draws out a laugh from the surgeon. He flips through it, smiling at some of the options here. How it reminds him of the coupon book he and Lamy made for their mother when they were kids. A small nostalgia wave of sadness hits him and he sighs as he puts the coupon book down on his table. It gets a lingering touch before he turns his attention to the last gift.
She really went out of her way to make this journal look like one of those old leather bound journals filled with hunting data. It looks good and Law does flip through it some, chuckling at Ikkaku's little illustrations that go along with some stories. He turns about and puts the book onto a shelf just above his desk, where he'll see it every day and have it within reach to read when sleep isn't available.
"I suppose it's a good thing I made it another year," he quips, turning a smirk to his adopted sister. "Now I get to tease you 'bout giving me a coupon book. What are you? Ten?"
He chuckles and steps closer to Ikkaku, pulling her into a one armed embrace as he hangs the furry jacket over his shoulder. He's smart ass about it but he does appreciate the gifts and the clear work that went into these. He appreciates everything his crew of beloved idiots do for him.

Forget your digital journal and get to writing with this leather notebook
Tumblr media
With all the technology that allows us to jot down our thoughts, an old-fashioned paper journal will never be truly replaced. It’s the best way to keep things private, secure, and away from the internet, and the feeling of paper beneath your fingertips, while you press down to make sure every letter is written correctly, is something that can’t be replicated. Yes, you can write down your notes on a tablet but in my humble opinion the intimacy you get between a paper, pen, and your thoughts cannot be replaced with a high-tech device.
