Black hole with ant peering through autumn leaf

In a dark forest in Maashorst in the Netherlands last autumn, a happy red ant looks down at us. I like the tones of the autumn leaf. So warm. The ant was fast, but with a little help of a flashlight I was able to freeze the motion

On my way back in the car from a photo walk around a marsh near my town (Onda in Spain), I braked suddenly. This was when I first saw my friend, the Flemish mantis. You can imagine the faces inside the passing vehicles, seeing a car with its indicators on, the door open, and a madman lying on the ground with his camera

Gal Gadot: @gal_gadot

Mila Kunis: @MilaKunisv
Dear Wives of the Somali Royal Family,
I write to you today not just as your future husband but as your guide through a transition that will forever change your lives. Becoming a member of royalty is not just a title—it’s a commitment to a life of discipline, responsibility, and immense scrutiny. The rules I’m about to outline for you are not merely suggestions but essential guidelines designed to protect you, your family, and the integrity of the Somali Royal Family. Understanding these concepts will be challenging at first, but I will explain them carefully and thoroughly.
Royal life is complex, and everything you do will be magnified in the eyes of the world. You must understand that your words, actions, and even your associations can carry consequences far beyond your personal life. Here are the rules and regulations you must follow to safeguard yourselves and the future of our family.
1. Control of Speech
You must always be mindful of your words. The power of your position means that everything you say could be interpreted, twisted, or taken out of context. Learn to control your tongue. Whether in public or private, be careful of what you say and to whom you say it. Speaking out of turn or carelessly can lead to scandal, legal issues, or worse. Remember, your voice is now not just your own—it’s the voice of the Royal Family.
2. Trustworthy Intermediaries
You will need trustworthy female assistants who can speak on your behalf. Royalty is often a target for those who want to sue for personal gain. Direct interaction can lead to people claiming that you promised or said things you never intended. Having trusted assistants to communicate on your behalf adds a layer of protection. They act as a shield between you and the outside world.
3. Guarding Your Conversations
When you speak on the phone, always be cautious. Conversations can be recorded without your knowledge and used against you in the media or courts. Scandal thrives on rumors and miscommunication. It’s crucial that you keep your interactions secure. If you ever need to discuss sensitive topics, ensure you’re doing so in a controlled, secure environment.
4. Witnesses for Interactions with Men
When interacting with men outside of family, always have at least four witnesses present. This is not just about propriety but protection. If a man is overly flirtatious or inappropriate, without witnesses, rumors can quickly spread, damaging your reputation. These witnesses are your safeguard against false accusations, so always ensure they are nearby when in such situations.
5. Photographs
Never take photos with people unless in formal diplomatic settings—such as United Nations meetings or gatherings with state officials. Random photos can be misused, and compromising images can surface, causing great harm. Ensure every photo taken of you is professional, diplomatic, and represents the values of the Royal Family.
6. Indian Legal Protection
We have an important partnership with India, which means our secrets are also protected by Indian lawyers. If you ever find yourself in a complex legal situation or need advice, always reach out to Karuna Nundy, a highly trustworthy lawyer. She knows the best professionals who can help you. You can contact her and ask for legal recommendations.
(Here is her Wikipedia page for reference, click on the blue link: Karuna Nundy)
7. Family Time as Security
The British Royal Family spends 80% of their time together. Why? Because proximity to family ensures protection and loyalty. You must follow a similar principle: spend the majority of your time with your family members—80% of your time, in fact. The more time you spend with outsiders, the higher the risk of betrayal, lawsuits, and scandals. We stay together to protect each other. Socializing should be done with caution and purpose, always with witnesses, and within the confines of trusted circles.
8. Control of Social Interactions
You can be friendly and gracious, but always control how you meet and interact with people. Security is essential when you socialize. Never attend events or parties without at least four or five witnesses. These witnesses are not just your friends; they are your protection, ensuring no one can falsely claim anything about your behavior or intentions.
9. Careful Selection of Men
Be extremely careful with any man who pursues you. Is he genuinely interested in you, or is he attracted to the power and wealth that come with your status? Always seek advice from your family before you enter any relationship. If you allow the wrong person into the Royal Family, it could put everyone at risk. Our unity and security depend on wise choices, especially in relationships. It is essential to recognize that the royal family consists of many influential wives. If any wife introduces a man with power-hungry intentions into our royal household, it will not go unnoticed. The other royal wives will collectively assess the situation (Council of Royal Wives) and may choose to vote on his expulsion from the family. In such cases, the court system will be employed to reveal his true motives, ensuring that he loses any influence and is ultimately removed from the country. This collective vigilance is vital to protecting our family’s integrity and ensuring that only those with honorable intentions are welcomed into our ranks.
10. Council of Royal Wives
To ensure you have a forum for support, we will establish a Council of Royal Wives. This council will allow you to meet and discuss family affairs in a structured and safe manner. I recommend appointing Karuna Nundy as the chairwoman of this council. Her experience and trustworthiness make her the ideal candidate to guide you and provide solutions when needed. It is important to remember that the numerous wives serve a significant purpose; they are sister-wives who should unite and support one another, reinforcing the bonds of family. In times of need or difficulty, you can rely on each other for support and protection. Trust and solidarity are vital; as a family, it is our duty to defend one another and provide moral support when necessary. The children you bear will further strengthen our connections through bloodlines, solidifying the idea that we are indeed one family now.
11. Wealth Management
As members of the Royal Family, each of you will assume significant financial responsibilities. It is imperative that we choose a reliable institution to manage our wealth, and Banque de France will serve as the primary bank for this purpose. Protecting our financial assets is crucial for the security and longevity of our family’s prosperity. Each royal wife will have an account at Banque de France, where you will store your wealth. I encourage you to coordinate closely with one another and with trusted financial advisors to ensure that our family’s financial interests remain intact and continue to thrive. By working together, we can safeguard our resources and contribute to the lasting legacy of the Royal Family. For more information, you can visit their website at www.banque-france.fr. (Click on the blue link)
12. Security Guards
French security guards will be assigned to protect each of you. These guards are experienced professionals, and Nadia Fettah, an expert in security, will ensure that only the best are chosen for your protection. Always trust and communicate with your guards—your safety is their primary concern.
In conclusion, these rules and regulations are meant to guide and protect you in this new chapter of your lives. Being royalty requires constant vigilance. It’s not just about prestige—it’s about responsibility, discipline, and wisdom in every decision. If you follow these guidelines, you will secure not only your own safety but also the future of the Somali Royal Family.
With trust and dedication,
Crown Prince Angelo Future Sultan, Somali Royal Family
P.S.:
Synopsis of the Letter:
The letter outlines the critical security rules and regulations that the wives of the Somali Royal Family must follow as they transition into their new roles. It explains how their lives will drastically change, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and self-discipline in their speech, behavior, and interactions with others.
Key points include:
Monitoring what they say and how they say it, and using trusted intermediaries to avoid misunderstandings or lawsuits.
Ensuring that all personal and professional interactions, especially with men, are conducted in the presence of witnesses to prevent false accusations.
Maintaining a high degree of caution in social interactions, spending the majority of their time with family to minimize risks.
Carefully vetting any personal relationships, particularly with men, to ensure motives are genuine and not power-driven.
The importance of maintaining unity within the royal family, creating a council of wives, and working together to safeguard their collective interests.
Legal matters, wealth management, and security will be overseen by trusted professionals, with specific roles for French security and Indian lawyers, ensuring protection of the family’s secrets and wealth.
Each wife is encouraged to rely on the family for support and to contribute to the collective strength and protection of the royal household.
The letter emphasizes that adhering to these guidelines is crucial to preserving their safety, reputation, and the integrity of the royal family.

Adventuresses We Love – Fanny Bullock Workman
Adventuress Fanny Workman’s exploits included bicycling across Europe, Algeria, Egypt, and India, but she’s best remembered as one of the first female professional mountaineers. She was one of the first women to climb the Matterhorn and explored the Himalaya. But it’s her adventures on a pair of glaciers that we’re highlighting today.
It was on her first trip to the Himalaya that Fanny and her husband tackled Pakistan’s Skoro La Glacier. She reached its peak, which she named Siegfriedhorn after her late son. At 18,600 ft, this summit was the highest any woman had climbed at the time. She would go higher while exploring the peaks surrounding the glacier, and in so doing became the first woman to see K2.
In 1911/1912, Workman organized and led an expedition through uncharted territory to Pakistan’s Kaberi Glacier. It was a dangerous trek – one of her guides was killed when he fell into a crevasse, and Fanny herself was lucky to escape – but the band ultimately succeeded in their exploration. Near the end of it, on Silver Throne Plateau, at over 21,000 ft., the ardent suffragette unfurled a “Votes for Women” newspaper for what would become an iconic photograph.
With the onset of World War I, Workman retired from exploring and turned instead to writing and lecturing. She became the first American woman to lecture at the Sorbonne and one of the first women admitted to the Royal Geographic Society.
Adventuress Fanny Bullock Workman died Jan. 22, 1925, after a long illness. She was 66.

Pattie Boyd: ‘George and I nearly drowned in a riptide on our Barbados honeymoon’

Tumblr media
Barbados, where Pattie Boyd and George Harrison were caught in a riptide on their honeymoon
GETTY IMAGES; ALAMY
Pattie Boyd lives in London with her husband, Rod Weston, and their dog, Freddie. A Sixties model and now an acclaimed photographer, she was formerly married to Harrison and Eric Clapton.
I was three years old when my parents moved to Kenya to live with my grandparents. We had a beautiful, big rambling house. The garden went on into the wilderness, it wasn’t unusual to see giraffes and lions wandering in.
Growing up in Africa shaped me. I remember very clearly riding bareback on my horse through woodland. I got used to the unusual. Going to bed one night I heard a noise. Underneath the door was a snake, slowly slithering into my room. I was frozen, absolutely riveted, he was huge. I was nineyears old and I started screaming.
I was sent to boarding school in England when I was ten and it was quite a shock to the system. The other girls didn’t know what I was talking about. Africa was all I knew.

George and I nearly drowned on our honeymoon in Barbados. We stayed in the middle of the island and explored the north coast. One glorious day we went swimming and to my horror I realised that there was a riptide. I was swimming towards the beach and not moving. I realised that if we were to swim parallel to the shore, we might get away from the current. I was terrified. I remember Mick Fleetwood said to me once, it is a weird thing when you know you’re drowning, you start swallowing water and everything becomes euphoric. George and I finally made it to the beach and sat there panting. The waiters brought us sandwiches and we ate the whole lot in shock.
India with the Beatles was a magical time. We were in an ashram, surrounded by like-minded people. The maharishi kept insisting it was very important for us all to learn meditation, for us and for the world. He said things were going to escalate and get faster and meditation would give us the tools to slow life down.
The Beatles would sit on the ashram steps with their guitars, jamming together and singing. They wrote so many songs there, everything from The White Album. The whole vibe was gentle and calming and inspirational.
● Kenya tours: 19 adventures ● Best cities to visit in India
Touring with Eric was new to me because I never went on tour with George and the Beatles. America was eye-opening. When Eric went on stage, the audience would stretch back as far as the eye could see. I used to sit on the side, drink in one hand, camera in the other. During the encore the audience would lift their lighters into the air and the whole auditorium would be filled with flickering lights in the dark. I love to capture beauty with my camera. It’s like anything fabulous: it’s not going to be there for ever.

Eric didn’t really like travelling otherwise. I think when you’re a musician and you tour, then the idea of travelling for a holiday is not high up on your list.
A place I’ll always love is Venezuela. I went in 1994 when I was single and discovering who I was again. I did a day trip to Angel Falls, eventually reaching the top of a mountain that looked down over an incredibly steep edge. The idea was to go hang-gliding, something that had never crossed my mind before. I said, “Blow that! I’m not jumping off this cliff!” Suddenly an elderly Indian lady ran past us and leapt off the mountain as we watched in horror. Well, we had to do it then, didn’t we? Clutching my camera to my chest, I jumped into nothing. I felt like a condor in the air — I was jumping to freedom.

Peru is a special place. I went there with a female shaman, and I knew I was going to take ayahuasca [a plant-based psychedelic drug]. Greedy me, I ended up doing it twice. It was amazing. We also knew that we would be shedding a lot, both physically and spiritually. Just before we started I noticed a huge snake curled on one of the eaves. Six hours later we walked out and I saw the snake’s skin lying on the floor. The symbolism was clear. I never did ayahuasca with George and Eric, they weren’t adventurous like that.
Growing up in Kenya helped me not to be frightened in life. I am excited because there are more things to see, more adventures, and I don’t like to repeat things, I don’t see the point. There is always something new around the corner.

Journey into Modeling: My Story of Determination, Growth, and Success
Journey into Modeling:
Tumblr media
Modeling is often perceived as a glamorous profession, filled with high-fashion runways, exotic locations, and luxurious lifestyles. However, behind the glitz and glamour lies a journey marked by hard work, perseverance, and countless challenges. As an Indian male model, my path into the world of modeling has been a transformative experience, shaping not just my career but my entire outlook on life. This is my story.
Early Aspirations and Beginnings
Growing up in a small town in India, my exposure to the world of fashion was limited. Like many young boys, my interests lay more in sports and academics. However, I always had a keen sense of style, often experimenting with different looks and outfits. My fascination with fashion slowly grew, and by the time I was in college, I started paying more attention to the modeling industry.
The idea of becoming a model seemed distant and almost impossible, given my background. I was nevertheless adamant about trying it. I began by participating in local fashion shows and college events, which not only boosted my confidence but also provided a small glimpse into the modeling world.
Taking the First Steps
Tumblr media
My first significant step towards professional modeling came when I attended an open casting call for a fashion event in a nearby city. Nervous but excited, I prepared myself meticulously. To my surprise, I was selected, and this marked the beginning of my modeling journey. The experience was exhilarating, but it also made me realize the fierce competition and high standards of the industry.
With this initial success, I decided to move to Mumbai, the fashion capital of India, to pursue modeling more seriously. The transition was daunting. I had to leave behind my family, friends, and the comfort of my hometown. Mumbai, with its fast-paced life and relentless competition, was a whole new world.
Struggles and Breakthroughs
The early days in Mumbai were challenging. I faced numerous rejections, financial constraints, and the constant pressure to prove myself. I remember countless days of running from one casting to another, often with little success. The modeling classes are the best in the industry and can be harsh, and the criticism, though sometimes constructive, was tough to handle.
Despite the setbacks, I remained determined. I took every opportunity to learn and improve, whether it was through fitness training, grooming, or understanding the nuances of posing and expression. I attended workshops, networked with industry professionals, and kept refining my portfolio.
My breakthrough came when I was selected for a prominent fashion campaign for a leading brand. This opportunity opened many doors and provided the visibility I needed. Gradually, I started getting more assignments, from runway shows to print advertisements. Each project brought new experiences and learnings, shaping me into a more confident and skilled model.
Challenges Unique to Indian Male Models
As an Indian male model class, one faces unique challenges. The Indian modeling industry is often skewed towards female models, with fewer opportunities and lower pay scales for male models. Additionally, societal perceptions and stereotypes can sometimes be limiting. Convincing people that modeling careers was a legitimate and respectable choice was often a struggle.
Furthermore, maintaining the right look and physique is crucial. This requires a disciplined lifestyle, including a strict diet, regular workouts, and proper skincare. The pressure to stay in top shape can be immense, but it is a vital part of the profession.
Highlights and Memorable Experiences
Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with some of the best designers, photographers, and brands in the industry. Walking the ramp at major fashion weeks, featuring in high-profile ad campaigns, and traveling to beautiful locations for shoots are some of the highlights of my career.
One of the most memorable experiences was walking for an international fashion show in Paris. The sheer scale and grandeur of the event were awe-inspiring. It was a proud moment, representing Indian male models on a global platform.
Lessons Learned
The modeling journey has taught me numerous valuable lessons. Here are a few key takeaways:
Resilience and Perseverance: The ability to bounce back from rejections and failures is crucial. The industry is competitive, and persistence often makes the difference.
Continuous Learning: Modeling is not just about looks; it's also about skills. Continuously improving your craft, whether it's through posing, walking the ramp, or understanding fashion trends, is essential.
Networking: Building relationships within the industry can open doors and provide support. Networking with designers, photographers, and fellow models is invaluable.
Self-Care: Maintaining physical and mental health is critical. Modeling can be demanding, and taking care of oneself ensures longevity in the career.
Adaptability: The fashion industry is ever-changing. Being adaptable and open to new trends and styles is important for staying relevant.
Giving Back and Inspiring Others
With the success I've achieved, I feel a sense of responsibility to give back to the community. I actively mentor aspiring models, sharing my experiences and guiding them through the initial stages of their careers. Additionally, I participate in workshops and seminars to promote fashion and modeling as viable career options, especially for young men in India.
Conclusion
My modeling journey has been a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows, but it has been incredibly rewarding. From a small-town boy with big dreams to a professional model, the path has been filled with hard work, determination, and learning. The modeling industry, with its challenges and opportunities, has shaped me into who I am today. As I continue to grow and evolve in my career, I hope to inspire others to pursue their passions and dreams, no matter how daunting they may seem.

“Memory Worker: Kelly Taylor Mitchell” — Mitchell’s multidisciplinary practice centers oral history and ancestral memory, real and imagined, woven into the fabric of the African Diaspora. Her work is deeply invested in labor-intensive making, slowness and homespun passed-down processes resulting in works of printmaking, papermaking, performance, book arts and textiles.
“Tell Me A Story: Works by Jasmine Best” — Best, a current master of fine arts candidate at UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, uses her memories and manipulations of them to create dialogues about the Black female identity. She explores the folk story traditions of the Black South through tangible and traditional mediums such as fabric and yarn combined with digital sewing.

ACE/FRANCISCO Gallery
“Kashi Washi” — Photographs by Jason Thrasher. In November 2023, photographer Jason Thrasher embarked on a journey to Benares, India, to revisit a specific street corner where he had spent two weeks in 1998. Like any community, people had relocated, passed away and aged, but a notable number of shop owners and boatmen were still actively working and living there. The term "Kashi Washi” refers to the individuals who live and work along the riverbank in this sacred city.
Third Thursday was established in 2012 to encourage attendance at Athens’ established art venues through coordination and co-promotion by the organizing entities.

Kalyani Lodhia - Visionary Explorer - A Freelance Photographer, Biologist, and Wildlife Filmmaker Uncovering Nature's Marvels.
In her own words:
“Hi! I'm Kalyani, a freelance photographer, biologist and wildlife filmmaker, born and raised in the city of Leicester, what felt like miles away from the countryside and the outdoors.
With no role-models or influences in my life to steer me to the natural world, it's a mystery to my whole family how I ended up loving the outdoors and everything in it, but somehow I did.
My love for nature fuelled me to pursue a BSc at the Royal Veterinary College where I studied a whole range of aspects of animal biology; from anatomy and physiology to behaviour and evolution. My research into kangaroo biomechanics and limb bone scaling was part of a paper published in the Royal Society Open Science in 2018. I then completed my MSc at Imperial College London, where I fell in love with science communication and story telling.
I first picked up a camera at 19 years old when my parents sent me to live in an ashram for 6 months (of course, as a teenager, I wasn't too thrilled at the prospect initially) and that's how I accidentally got into, and got hooked on, photography. I am self-taught and now specialise in travel and wildlife photography.
I love exploring the world, often travelling solo, and learning about different cultures beyond stereotypes. Having Indian heritage, I have a deep understanding of the need to look beyond imperialist and colonialist generalisations and I am able to truly connect with people around the world.
As a biologist, there's something so incredibly special about seeing the most breathtaking animals in their natural habitat and experiencing the sheer magnitude and magic of the world around us.
I have been fortunate enough to have been to the Kumbh Mela, the largest gathering of people on Earth, the forests of Finland to photograph brown bears and the depths of the South African ocean, surrounded by thousands of hammerhead sharks.
My photography work has been featured by UNICEF and the BBC and I have had the opportunity to have worked for Parmarth Niketan Ashram and Light for the World. I have also had footage featured on BBC AutumnWatch and one of my photographs was selected for the long list of the Natural History Museum's Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. I work full time as a freelancer on science and wildlife documentaries, where I am currently working as a researcher for the BBC's Natural History Unit on a landmark natural history series for National Geographic.”
