Colt’s Rare and Interesting Pocket Nine (PHOTOS)

Best known for their full-sized .45ACP single actions, Colt tried to break that mold by marketing a double action 9mm pocket gun in the 1990s.

With the Federal Assault Weapons Ban afoot, which put the kybosh on the commercial market for semi-autos with a magazine capacity that went over 10 rounds, Colt debuted several double action pistols during the Clinton era. These included the 6+1 capacity Pony Series 90 .380ACP and various versions of the much larger Colt Double Eagle. Among this tide was the Pocket Nine.

While there are over 17 million CCW holders today, in 1999, when the Pocket Nine came out, there were still at least seven states that banned the practice.

Tipping the scales at just 17-ounces, the very compact DAO used a 2.75-inch barrel and a very slim profile. Like the Pony 90, it had a 6+1 capacity but was chambered in the more powerful 9mm. Shipping standard with rubber wraparounds and 3-dot sights, the Pocket Nine was only produced in a stainless variant.

When it comes to specs, it rivals Kahr’s CM9 pistol, only it should be noted that Kahr introduced that polymer-framed model in 2011 — over a decade after Colt added the Pocket Nine to its catalog. Likewise, the Kimber Solo is similar in size but sports an aluminum frame and a striker-fired action.  In short, Colt’s single stack 9mm was interesting for its time. Its only contemporary rivals when it came to DAO hammer-fired single stack 9mms were the S&W 3953 and Sig’s P239, both of which are now out of production.

Speaking of out of production, the Pocket Nine is today a collector’s item, as Colt only produced about 5,000 of these guns in 1999, then closed the line. Facing competition like the Glock G26 subcompact, which was heavier and longer but offered a 10+1 capacity, the new 9mm had an uphill battle.

This is a short list of the pistols that are the top of the heap, so to speak. Many times when looking for the ideal pistol, people get caught up in calibers and frame materials. No gun is perfect and there are always going to be five to ten pistols that most people can agree on as being the leaders in the concealed carry category. These are my personal favorites–the ones I consider to be the best concealed carry handguns.

Springfield XDM Compact

The XD line of pistols originated in Croatia as the HS2000 and started being sold in the U.S. in 2002 under the famed Springfield Armory name. While I felt that the company’s deceptive name was a bit shady, I could not help but thoroughly appreciate this pistol. They have many models and are typically feature rich and have earned a reputation for high quality and a good value.

The XDM compact, the best concealed carry pistol in my opinion, is a polymer framed, striker-fired pistol with many safety features including a grip safety, a trigger safety, and a firing pin block. It also has a picatinny rail, adjustable back straps, and a loaded chamber indicator.

I have a lot of experience with the 9mm and my first reaction was how mild the recoil was compared to a similar sized Glock, because the Springfield has a heavier slide. The XDM is chambered in 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP–and standard capacity magazines are 13, 11, and 9, respectively. The combination of features, reliability, and durability make this my top choice in this category. These pistols can be found for around $600 in most places, and elsewhere for less.

My Thoughts – While I do like the XDM series of pistols from Springfield, I prefer the XD MOD 2 SubCompact 3″ model over the XDM compact for CCW. While both are nice CCW options, I prefer the Grip-Zone grip over the adjustable backstrap grips on the XDM SC.

CZ 2075 RAMI

CZs are known the world over for their high quality build level, reliability, and comfort. The full sized CZ 75 and its derivatives, the RAMI being one of them, is one of the most popular handguns on the planet and also one of the most copied. The CZs as a whole are relatively scarce in the U.S., although they are rapidly growing notoriety and popping up at local gun stores all across the country.

Their popularity has grown due to readers like you who are seeking out information on-line and demanding more choices. The RAMI is a hammer-fired double action/single action alloy framed double stack pistol. It’s available in 9mm and .40 S&W and ships with a regular (10 in 9mm, 7 in .40) and extended (14 in 9mm, 9 in .40 S&W) magazine.

My Thoughts – The RAMI is basically a scaled version of the venerable CZ 75 action. While I also like the RAMI (I’m a big fan of CZ both rifles and pistols), it’s built on an aluminum frame and tends to weigh a little more than one of it’s polymer frame counterpart CCW pistols. If you are a fan of DA/SA actions, then the RAMI might be a good option. As it’s a double stack design, you get more rounds compared to most of the popular single stack models, but the trade off is a wider grip. While an interesting CCW option, this one isn’t going to be on most top 5 lists.

Walther PPK

The PPK has been around for a long time, since 1931 to be exact, and is commonly found in the .380 ACP cartridge, although other variants do exist. It gained popularity as one of the sidearms used by Nazi Germany and later as fictional super spy James Bond’s firearm of choice.

There are many variants available today, but most have the same simple, reliable, blowback action, 6 or 7 round capacity, and are the standard in concealability and accuracy. Many concealed carry pistols are scaled down versions of original full sized designs, whereas the PPK is the original small pistol. It is a thin, steel-framed pistol that you can hide on your hip, small of your back, in your pocket, or on your ankle and is thus very versatile. The PPK is also a double action/single action pistol with a manual safety and old-school fixed blade sights.

A variant currently in production is the PPK/S, which has a slightly larger height than the original PPK. They are produced in the U.S. by Smith and Wesson under license from Walther. These are not too easy to find new, but their long history means that there are many used pieces around. MSRP is listed at $700 and can usually be found in excellent used condition for around $550.

My Thoughts – The PPK (and PPK/S) are neat little guns with a decorated history, and are still quite popular today. My biggest issues with the PPK for CCW is the fact that it’s built on a steel frame, which helps with recoil but adds weight, and the rather high costs of acquisition for the PPK compared to some of the competitor CCW pistol models. It’s more of an old school gun but has a certain nostalgia to it. While it’s a CCW candidate, I’d say there are far better and less expensive models that are a better CCW option.

Glock Sub-compacts 26, 27, 29, 30, 39, 33

Glocks are either adored or despised, and rarely anything in between. Even if you are a Glock hater, you must acknowledge them as the pioneer in modern pistols, popularizing both lighter, polymer framed pistols as well as the striker fired mechanism.

All Glocks function the same. Some are larger than others, and are chambered in different cartridges, but those are the only major differences. The Glock family have no external, manual safety features, have polymer frames, and are short recoil-operated with a locking breech. They have risen to be a favorite among law enforcement and civilians alike for their reliability and ease of use.

Cleaning, maintaining, and disassembling a Glock is also far easier than a hammer-fired pistol, but are often criticized as being clunky and visually unappealing.

My Thoughts – Whether you like the Glock brand or not, its hard to argue with their success and durability. Glock has developed a near fanatical following, in part thanks to their “to hell and back” reliability, and reasonable pricing points. Out of all the Glock Sub-Compact models listed above, the Glock 26 is by far the most popular seller. However, the single stack Glock 43 is noticeably absent from the list, and just about has to be included in any conversation regarding top selling CCW handguns. The G43 is selling on a torrid pace and will be in most conversations about the “best single stack CCW pistol”. If you like a compact, polymer frame, striker fired handgun; it’s hard to argue with the Glock Sub-Compact series.

Smith & Wesson J-Frame Revolvers

No list of the best concealed carry handguns would be complete without a revolver. Smith & Wesson started making J-Frame revolvers over 60 years ago and they are the default revolver of choice for concealed carriers. While most people appreciate the capacity and reloading capabilities of a semi-automatic, a sizable minority of carriers prefer a revolver.

Revolvers are touted as being the ultimate in reliability. While revolvers can malfunction, the common perception is that it is much more unlikely than a semi-automatic which is why most police offers carried revolvers as their duty weapons well into the 1990s. The downside of revolvers is capacity and slower reloads even with a speed-loader. New shooters also like their simplicity.

The most common calibers for small framed self-defense revolvers are the .38 Special +P and the .357 magnum. Those chambered in .357 are able to shoot the .38s, but the reverse is not true. The .357 ammunition is easy to find but more expensive and significantly more powerful. As such, these revolvers produce very heavy recoil. The model 360 is a very light, scandium framed .357 which is my go-to carry revolver. The model 360’s MSRP is $770, but is easily found new for $650 or less.

My Thoughts – I agree that the venerable S&W J frame should be considered in most conversations about the ideal CCW handgun. But, like any handgun, the J frame has some pros and cons. The pros: it’s small and lightweight, highly reliable, and is relatively simple to operate. The cons: a 5 shot capacity, a long and heavy factory trigger pull, and most have elementary sights at best. The .38 is the mot popular caliber, but I personally shy aware from shooting a .357 round in any .357 version as the recoil and manageability can be less than pleasant. Also, not every J frame will support +P+ loads so it’s important to be sure before trying or carrying any. Another entry from S&W that is unusually absent from this top 5 CCW guns list is the S&W M&P Shield in 9/40. It’s one of my personal top 5 CCW favorites based on it’s price point, functionality, aftermarket options, and slim, single stack design.

The next thing to think about is size.  Not just the size of the gun, but the size of you.  In general, the bigger you are, the bigger the gun you can conceal.  It’s recommended that you carry the largest gun that you can conceal and safely shoot.  A 100 lb, 5′ nothing girl probably can’t conceal a Sig P250, and a Ruger LCP may be too small for someone with large hands to use in an emergency.  Remember, the first thing to go when in fight or flight mode is fine motor control.  You need a gun that you can use even if your fingers turn into bratwursts.  If you have a local gun shop, ask if you can hold and compare a few subcompact firearms.

Next, you need to think about capacity.  Size and capacity typically go hand in hand.  Bigger guns can hold more rounds, obviously.  If you’re large enough to conceal it, consider a weapon with a double stack magazine.  This means that the cartridges in the magazine are staggered and will hold more than a single stack magazine of the same length.  This does widen the magazine (and the grip of the gun) pretty severely, though.  Personally, I wouldn’t carry a weapon with fewer than 6 rounds, and even then I would prefer more.  In the event you have to shoot someone, it’s best to magdump, the more bullets you can fill your assailant with, the better your chances of survival.  Your goal is the neutralize the threat.  If that means killing them, so be it.  Humans can absorb a hell of a lot of damage and adrenaline is very powerful.  Guns don’t work like in the movies - at all.

Finally, the cartridges.  This one is probably the most contentious.  In general, if you’re looking at small guns, you’re really only going to find weapons chambered in .380 ACP and 9x19.  Unless you’re really tiny, don’t carry something in .22LR.  Like with the previous two sections, carry the biggest caliber you can handle for the weapon you are thinking about.  In a self defense situation, I would argue that, practically speaking, .380 and 9x19 are more or less equal.  They are both 9mm caliber, and at the range that the average self defense shooting occurs (about 7-20 feet), probably will not make too much of a difference either way.  Another aspect that’s debated is hollow point or not.  I would recommend hollow point ammunition, but in smaller calibers with less energy, it’s not as important as with larger calibers.  The purpose of hollow point bullets is to open up and spread out within your target.  This creates a larger wound channel and dumps the bullet’s kinetic energy faster.  They are less likely to over penetrate, which means less likely to hit someone behind your target.

5 Best Handgun Options for Concealed Carry

When planning to buy a concealed carry handgun people tend to conflate “best” with “small,” but small relates to different people in different ways. Six-foot-two Bert weighing 240 pounds may see a compact pistol as small in his ever expanding waistband whereas 5-foot-4 Ernie weighing 120 pounds finds the same gun too big for his skinny jeans. Therefore, “practical” might be the preferred definition. The best concealed carry handgun is what’s most practical for you.

As the term implies, a concealed carry handgun is one you could carry without alerting others to the gun’s presence. The goal when selecting a concealed carry handgun is finding one that gives you a sense of security, but also holsters comfortably and remains hidden until you access it. While this list will mention brands and specific models, their use will illustrate attributes of handguns as they relate to concealed carry. Here are the five best handgun options for concealed carry.

1. Compact Handguns

Gun manufacturers tend to scale down their full-size handguns to fit the compact size as a way to offer another option. That way, the gun itself includes many of the same features as its full-size counterpart but in a smaller package. Features like an accessory rail or adjustable sights and a larger magazine capacity make compact pistols a desirable option for carry. But how practical is it to conceal a compact handgun?

When making a compact pistol, gun makers typically cut down both the barrel and grip by about an inch. What remains is a balanced pistol that allows almost all shooters to utilize a full three-finger grip. While the size reduction does make the gun more practical to conceal, in many cases a compact handgun is comparable to a full-size handgun and maybe still too big to conceal for anyone with a medium to small frame.   

The Beretta PX4 Storm Compact is a good example. The Italian gun maker took the full-size pistol and reduced the barrel from 4 inches to 3.27 and the grip from 5.51 inches to 5. The changes make the capable duty weapon still large enough for service yet convenient to carry either open or discreetly.   

2. Snub-nosed Revolvers

The term “snub-nosed” applies to a revolver with a frame of any size but with a barrel length of 3 inches or less. That description makes it notably different than semi-automatic handguns (besides the cylinder, obviously). Instead of a shortened barrel and grip, a snubby is determined only by how short the barrel is.

Snub-nosed revolvers became popular as concealed carry took on a more mainstream appeal. The benefit to a snub-nosed revolver is simplicity. No matter the quality of the gun or ammunition, the cylinder will rotate with every pull of the trigger.

When people think snub-nosed revolver, they typically envision a Smith & Wesson J-Frame, an indicator that applies to a range of Smith & Wesson revolvers. Although traditionally known to be chambered in .38, there are actually a variety of calibers. On top of that, many economical brands like Charter Arms and Taurus Firearms produce models that closely resemble the Smith & Wesson design.

3. Subcompact Handguns

Much like compact handguns, gun makers tend to smush their full-size pistols even more to make their subcompacts. While the smaller dimensions make them much easier to carry, they tend to be harder to shoot. You’re controlling the same caliber on a much smaller platform. None is more demonstrative than Glock pistols.

The Glock 26 is noticeably smaller than the standard Glock 17, yet, still a 9mm Glock pistol with Glock action, superb capabilities and a relatively high round count for its size (10 rounds) thanks to its double-stack magazine. It’s just the grip now only allows for a two-finger hold on a rather bulky handle.

However, other manufacturers start their designs as subcompacts. Kahr Arms, for example, specializes in concealed carry pistols. These are usually smaller, slimmer and more intuitive than the subcompact in a series. A slim subcompact is attributable to the magazine design, what’s called a single-stack in which cartridges fill in one top of one the other.

4. Slimline Handguns

A slimline pistol is a subcompact, but we’re identifying it as a category on its own because multiple reputable brands have altered duty-pistol designs to fit the bill. Glock, for instance, has the Glock 43 — 43x and 48 — and Smith & Wesson has the M&P Shield. The effort was to create a smaller gun with the familiarity of their popular base models.

While slim pistol designs are comparable to subcompacts, the identifying factor is that they measure in at about an inch in width. The slimness makes them easier to conceal and the functionality more intuitive. These designs are possible, again, because the manufacturer redesigned the gun around a single-stack magazine.

5. Pocket Pistols

Some call these “get off me guns” since they’re designed to be used in a sudden, reactionary way. Like when a robber tries to ambush you as you try to enter your car.  In that scenario, things like sights and trigger pull matter very little as you pump lead into the attacker from an arm’s length away.

The best way to identify a pocket gun is when it fits in your pant’s pocket with ease. For such uber concealability the tradeoff is often limited caliber options and reduced magazine capacity. It’s a delicate balance. Gun makers want the gun to hold as many rounds as possible but of a caliber large enough for you to successfully defend yourself.

Traditionally, derringers are seen as the ultimate pocket pistol, but advancements in technology have changed that. Diamondback Firearms, for example, started making handguns ideal for life in balmy Florida, where summer lasts a mere 11 months out of the year. With a Diamondback pistol your options are .380 or 9mm and whatever color matches your cargo shorts that day.

Conceal and Carry On

The new Sig Sauer P320 XCompact pistol, which takes all the popular X Series features and puts them in a compact frame optimized for carry, is headed to dealers

Introduced earlier this year, the XCompact blends the features of the full-size line such as the redesigned grip module with a fastback profile, contoured magwell, and flat trigger with a deep trigger guard undercut, to a subcompact slide and barrel. This puts the gun in the same neighborhood size-wise as the P320 Compact— and Glock’s G19— while adding a ton of features. Best yet, it is comes standard with a X-Ray3 day/night front sight with rear night sight plate assembly making it optic-ready for Sig’s Romeo series and Deltapoint Pros.
