9 Guns You Can Count On After the SHTF
9 Guns You Can Count On After The SHTF
As the post-civil war slogan famously said, “Abe Lincoln may have freed all men, but Sam Colt made them equal”. Firearms themselves, however, are not all created equal. This is especially true when you put them under the pressures and strains that a post-disaster weapon would have to live up to.
When the SHTF, you want a gun that you can count on. Whether you’re hunting for food or fighting for your life, you need an accurate, reliable weapon that goes bang each and every time you pull the trigger. Listed below are nine guns you can bet your life on.
1. Mossberg 500
One of the best-selling shotguns of all time, the Mossberg 500 has been used by the US military since the 1960s. It’s super reliable, easy to disassemble and work on, and just at home in the woods as it is the middle of a firefight. Best of all, a wide range of shotgun ammunition gives you a lot of versatility, allowing you to hunt cottontail rabbits and breach doorways with the same weapon.
2. Remington 700
Few rifles can compare to the accuracy and reliability of this classic. The Remington 700 is still used by military and SWAT snipers to this day, and this rifle fits perfectly in the narrow class of rifles that are light enough to take hunting yet accurate enough to use as a sniper rifle. If you are wanting a mobile weapon that can still send lead a long ways down range, the Remington 700 is the perfect choice.
3. Glock 19
Glock has made an incredible name for themselves producing near indestructible pistols that function flawlessly. This particular pistol is a compact model that is chambered in 9mm. Though most any Glock is arguably as good as the other (Glock just about always delivers with every weapon they make), the Glock 19 made the list because it is small enough to be concealed, large enough to be accurate, and is chambered in what is arguably the most popular pistol round of all time.
4. Colt AR-15
Few weapons platforms are more popular than the AR-15, and a large number of brands make their own version of this weapon. You’ve got a lot of choices when choosing which AR-15 to buy, but the version that Colt makes is as good as any of them.
The Colt AR-15 is one best weapons you could hope to have in your hands if you ever find yourself in the middle of a full-blown firefight. It’s reliable, can hold 30 or more rounds depending on the clip you have in it, shoots as fast as you can pull the trigger, and is extremely easy to customize in a wide variety of ways. All said, owning a Colt AR-15 is as close as you can get to being a one-man army.
5. Springfield M1A
The M1A is the civilian version of the popular M14, though really there isn’t a lot of difference between the two models. This ultra-reliable rifle functions both as a long-range weapon and a fast-firing semi-automatic weapon for sending out lots of lead in mid to close quarter combat. It doesn’t have the capacity of the AR-15, but it does have better accuracy for long range shots and a 308 round that packs a punch.
6. Smith & Wesson 500
If you want a pistol with the knockdown power of a howitzer, the S&W 500 is the choice for you. This beast of a handgun is chambered in the massive .500 S&W cartridge, and it packs a wallop.
Why, though, is the S&W 500 a gun that you can count on if the SHTF? For one, it brings the accuracy of some rifles into the size of a pistol (though, admittedly, a rather large pistol). It’s also a revolver, which means it’s as reliable and durable as a gun can get. Lastly, the S&W 500 is essentially the pistol version of a 50 cal. It’s a weapon you carry on your hip that’s still powerful enough to shoot through small obstructions and light cover. You’d be hard pressed to find another concealable weapon that has that much power.
7. Ruger 10/22
Ruger describes the 10/22 as “America’s favorite .22 rifle”, and that’s a statement that would be hard to argue with. The 10/22 is a classic, and for good reason. It’s reliable, accurate, and as customizable as a .22 rifle can be.
While you won’t be taking a .22 into any shootouts if you have the choice, a .22 rifle is still a gun that is priceless in a disaster situation. The ammunition is cheap and light enough to carry thousands of rounds all day without breaking a sweat. The gun itself is quiet enough to avoid detection and is perfect for taking down small game. Few weapons have put more meat on the table than the .22, and the Ruger 10/22 is among the best .22 rifles available today.
8. Kel-Tec KSG
If you want a truly elite home defense weapon, the Kel-Tec KSG is the firearm of choice. This shotgun is as compact as is legally allowed in the United States, yet despite its size, it still holds an unbelievable total of 12 3-inch 12 gauge rounds.
Its dual magazines allow you switch between various projectiles with ease, which could come in handy in a variety of ways (such as giving you the ability to switch between lethal and nonlethal rounds) and the KSG’s largely composite construction is as reliable as it gets. Put a Kel-Tec KSG in the corner by your bedside and rest easy at night.
9. Kalashnikov AK-47 (Semi-auto Variant)
The AK-47 is a fighting machine, and even the semi-auto variations of it (which can be legally purchased without any kind of special licensing) are one of the most effective weapons you could have in a mid-range fight.
The Kalashnikov is just one brand that produces semi-auto AKs, and there several other good ones available. Whichever brand you go with, know that you are getting a reliable weapon that has stood the test of time.

Okay so let me tell you the story of this pistol and my ordeal with purchasing it...
Getting into 3 gunning has made me realize the amount of equipment I need, and how the firearms I had, just didn’t measure up to my needs for this sport. I have always been fond of the 1911 pistols, in fact, I’ve owned 4 of them. Naturally in a .45 caliber, which is great for personal protection. I’m learning as I go with this sport, and one thing I realized is that .45′s have one hell of a recoil. Not exactly great for staying on target and speed (especially on those sub compact models that I was a fan of) I starting having major pains in my wrist so I had to stop shooting .45 and grabbed my Glock 22 model in .40 cal. This is the smallest weight caliber firearm that I owned, at that point. It shot fine however I could see I still needed to drop down to a 9mm. The option to convert and mod the Glock to be competition ready was an option. However with that being my brother’s duty weapon, I couldn’t see modding it to anything to that would take it from the way he wore it everyday at work. So I came to a fork in the road, purchase a new pistol.
After looking and talking to many people it seemed to be that STI was the preferred gun of the 3 gun community. STI’s are amazingly crafted pistols out of the box, but STI also commanded a hefty price tag for all of that great craftmanship. I hadn’t even shot a match yet and wasn’t sure if i wanted to drop a few grand on a pistol. Then I remembered one of the first conversations I had with my friend Mehdi. We met years ago and at the time I carried a full size Rock Island Armory 1911 .45 in my car, for personal protection. When he found that out, he was extremely excited to pick my brain about the brand, Rock Island Armory and the quality of my pistol. That was my 2nd 1911 and it ran way more consistently than my Kimber, and let's be honest in a personal protection situation the last thing you wanted was your pistol to jam. I told him that it was a pretty low maintenance gun and wasn't picky about what kind of ammo you used on it, I would have gladly paid 2X of what the pricetag was on that gun. (well under $500)
Fast forward a few years later... Naturally I called my friend Mehdi first, as with I do with anything pertaining to 3gun. He's been a great help and teacher introducing me to this sport. I asked him what I should purchase, without skipping a beat he suggested the ROCK ISLAND ARMORY TCM TAC ULTRA FULL SIZE HIGH CAPACITY COMBO - 22TCM/9MM Model #51947. This pistol is quite unique because it comes with a 9mm barrel but also included a barrel for a speciality round called .22 TCM. The .22 TCM round is based on the 5.56x45 NATO case and shortened to be the same length as the .38 Super. Kind of a cool added bonus, however for 3 gunning I will stick to my 9mm rounds. I was assured with a minimal amount of mods, this would be the pistol! I got the chance to shoot my his, and before I had run through one magazine of ammo... I was in love. I couldn't wait to get my hands on one. After searching a lot of local dealers and gun shows I wasn't able to locate this pistol. I put out a post on facebook looking for someone to track down this pistol for me locally. A friend had suggested Aleman Arms Company, a small gun dealer located 2 hours south of my home in Houston. Chris Aleman and his family are just starting out as dealers, I'm all for giving small businesses my money before larger companies. I told him what I was looking for and after about a week he had located my pistol. It was overnight shipped to him and I hopped in my car for the long drive to Port Lavaca, TX.
 NOW FOR THE DRAMA....
I get there and quickly fill out my paperwork to purchase a firearm. Contrary to belief and what the liberal media might tell you... YOU CAN NOT just walk into a dealer or gun show and purchase a firearm from a FFL without first submitting paperwork and having the FFL call the FBI NICS hotline. NICS is used by Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) to instantly determine whether a prospective buyer is eligible to buy firearms. Before ringing up the sale, cashiers call in a check to the FBI or to other designated agencies to ensure that each customer does not have a criminal record or isn’t otherwise ineligible to make a purchase. I've went through this process multiple times a year when making purchases without a problem. This time was different, while Mr. Aleman was on the phone with NICS they had said "FURTHER REVIEW" and placed him on hold, when a supervisor came back on the line I was "DELAYED." Meaning I had to wait up to 3 business days to determine if I was eligible to purchase a firearm. So I had to go home, tail between my legs, with no pistol. What seemed to be the LONGEST 3 DAYS of my life, I was awaiting the phone call to tell me "Hey Amanda, It's Chris at Aleman Arms Company... You've been approved. You can come pick up your pistol." However the call I got from the dealer was quite the opposite, I HAD BEEN DENIED the right to purchase a firearm. I was upset, angry and mostly HUMILIATED. The FBI does not provide any information to the FFL as to why I or anyone else gets a denial. All I was given was a web link, a hotline number and my case number. I frantically called the hotline to get this sorted out... and would you believe it? You can't even reach a live person from this number, just basic information guiding you to the FBI website to file an inquiry as to why you were denied, so I filled out the form and submitted it. Now I had to wait. In the meantime I had to deal with the embarrassment of not being allowed to purchase, at times I was even treated as if I was the criminal. Mind you I have not been arrested and the only thing that comes up on my record is a traffic ticket from 2009. Even my own family at times doubted my eligibility to purchase.
About a week later I get an Email back from the FBI stating that I had been denied my right to purchase a firearm because "my name sounded too similar to someone else's that had a criminal record." What I found ironic is during this whole process, I had passed a criminal background check from The Department of Homeland Security. The FBI demanded a full set of my rolled fingerprints. So I headed off to the local police department to have an officer roll my prints. (as the FBI demanded) I mailed off my prints, as well as many different forms of ID to prove my identity. After doing hours of research online I discovered that an NICS appeal is a LONG process sometimes taking over a year to have a ruling overturned. Due to the Obama administration the NICS offices had been majorly downsized so basically my appeal would just sit in a pile for god knows how long. I started to explore other avenues, other people had gotten the process expedited by filing a lawsuit on the FBI for violation of civil rights namely, the 2nd and 5th amendment. Others had contacted government officials to assist in pushing the process along. So now... I put on my big girl panties and dug in my heels. Now it wasn’t just for me but for those that found themselves in my shoes. I wrote a long letter to the FBI that explained my intent to file suit, then I went to find a lawyer that would have a pair big enough to go after “the man.” I wrote, e-mailed, faxed letters to EVERY official that I thought could help myself and others in this situation. Yeah, I even went as far as writing a letter to President Trump because something needed to be done about this process that I was told could take up to 16 months. I was prepared for a long lengthy battle…
To my shock and amazement, my persistence paid off. Somewhere along the line someone blew some steam up their asses and within days of receiving my appeal, they processed my appeal. Within a week or so I got a letter back from the FBI…
“The prints you submitted are not identical to the record used to deny your attempt to purchase a firearm.” Along with a notarized certificate “This is to certify that Amanda Morris IS ELIGIBLE to purchase a firearm from The Aleman Arms Company”
Now what this means for my next purchase, I’m not sure. I hope I, nor anyone else who is lawful and eligible to purchase firearms has to deal with an ordeal like this.
Finally after over a month I had gotten my DENIAL OVERTURNED and was given the green light to go pick up my gun.
Apparently it’s quite rare to get a denial ruling overturned. But, I FUCKING DID IT! I took on “the man” and reaffirmed my right to be a LAWFUL gun owner. At one point this was no longer about me or one pistol… This was for everyone that ever found themselves in my shoes. I take my rights as an American seriously, and when someone denies my basic rights… you best believe I’m going to stand up.
Don’t let anyone ever take your rights away from you.
 Thank you to:
Chris Aleman at Aleman Arms Company for helping me through this whole process and truly excelling at customer service.
Rock Island Armory / ARMSCO for making quality and reliable firearms affordable, you have a customer for life.
Officer Jason for taking the time out of your day to do my prints and not treat me like a criminal.
To every elected official’s office that I contacted.
And to everyone else that assisted and treated me with respect during this difficult process.

3 Recreational Shooting Activities You Need to Try
MT2.com | Firing Range Services | Gun Range Cleaning | Lead Reclamation | Environmental Remediation - #1 and Largest Nationwide Professional Environmental Soil Remediation & Firing Range Lead Reclamation Maintenance Contractor for both Indoor & Outdoor Firing Ranges
If you are a new gun owner or just getting into shooting sports, you may be surprised to know that there are recreational shooting activities to fit every level of hobbyist. Recreational shooting offers gun owners both practical skills and hours of enjoyment.
Finding a recreational shooting activity that you enjoy will ensure you frequently train with your firearm, sharpen skills, and develop muscle memory—all of which you want to do to become a well-rounded shooter. Perhaps one of the best benefits of recreational shooting is meeting and bonding with fellow firearm owners. Many of them will enthusiastically share their knowledge and breadth of experience with you.
    International Defensive Shooting Pistol Association
Some of the most fun but practical shooting events for people interested in the field of concealed carry handguns are matches sponsored by the International Defensive Shooting Pistol Association (IDPA). IDPA matches are sponsored across the U.S. at local gun ranges. IDPA matches offer functional training aimed at people who carry a gun for everyday use.
There are IDPA matches for every level of shooter from novice to master. There are also divisions for practically any kind of concealed carry pistol, so long as it remains mostly stock.
There are five divisions of IDPA shooting:
Custom defensive pistol division
Enhanced service pistol division
Compact carry division
Revolver division
Backup gun division
Required Equipment
Since IDPA competition emphasizes handguns that are used for everyday carry, IDPA competition does not allow heavily customized weapons. Although some of the IDPA rules are flexible, ported barrels, weighted grips, magazine wells, tungsten guide rods, and other devices that would make your gun highly customized are not allowed. Again, the emphasis here is on everyday carry pistols.
Semi-automatic pistols may be single action, double action, or Glock Safe Action™. 9mm is a popular cartridge among competitors and is the smallest caliber that can be used in semi-automatic pistols. However, larger calibers such as .40 S&W, 10mm, and .45 ACP are allowed, too, with there being very few restrictions on caliber.
For those who favor wheel guns, revolvers have their own divisions too. A .38 special is the minimum cartridge allowed, but those with more powerful calibers such as the .357 magnum, .41 magnum, and .44 magnum are also allowed.
If you are new to IDPA shooting, in addition to a reliable handgun, you’ll also want to get a good and reliable holster. An interesting thing about IDPA shooting is that, since it emphasizes practical shooting, both inside the waistband (IWB) and outside the waistband (OWB) holsters are permitted. In other words, you are encouraged to wear a holster that you would use for everyday concealed carry, such as a sturdy Kydex holster.
Competition
IDPA matches utilize different scenarios for each match and are scored based on accuracy and time. The time allowed for each match depends on your level, with the novice level being allowed the most time and the master level being allowed the least amount of time.
IDPA stages might include shooting from a seated position, shooting from a vehicle, shooting from a kneeling position, or shooting from behind cover. The possibilities are endless, and that’s part of the fun. You never really know exactly what your stage will look like until you show up and walk through the course.
3-Gun Shooting
Another practical, but fun, recreational shooting event is 3-gun shooting. As the name suggests, 3-gun shooting consists of three shooting events that include pistol, shotgun, and rifle.
If you have a competitive edge, are looking for a challenge,  and want to become proficient with three different classes of firearms, then 3-gun shooting might be for you. The 3-gun event can accommodate any level of shooter, from the novice shooter to the expert.
Required Equipment
Since 3-gun also emphasizes practicality, tactical-type weapons are utilized in this type of competition. This usually means rifles or carbines that are chambered in .223 with 18-20 inch barrels and 30 round magazines.
Pistols are usually of the semiautomatic variety, with 9mm being a popular caliber, but also .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and .357 SIG are seen, among others. Again, you’ll want to have a reliable holster and magazine pouches to ensure your stage goes smoothly.
Most competitors use shotguns that are pump-action or autoloading with a variety of chokes and loads. Both slugs and shotshells are authorized for 3-gun competition.
Competition
The divisions in 3-gun make it well-suited for practically any level of shooter. You may compete in the entry-level Limited Division, the more advanced Tactical Division, or the expert level divisions such as Heavy Metal, Open, or Outlaw Open.
The best benefit of 3-gun is becoming a well-rounded shooter in each of the three different types of firearms that one might use in a defensive situation. However, the atmosphere is one of competition and fun that will only serve to improve your skills.
Similar to IDPA, 3-gun competition courses vary widely. Some may include clay pigeons, steel and cardboard targets, pop up targets, and anything else that the match organizers may choose to include. Targets can be anywhere from 1 yard out to 500 yards. Whatever the course, you’re sure to find it far more exciting than your average day at the range.
Bowling Pin Shooting
We’ve covered two of the more practical types of recreational shooting, but if you’re looking for something more light-hearted and fun, then perhaps bowling pin shooting is more your speed.
Bowling pin shooting consists of using a firearm to knock bowling pins off a table.
Required Equipment
Although traditionally higher caliber handguns are used (to ensure the bowling pin is knocked off the table), some competitions allow .22 LRs, pistols, shotguns, or rifles/carbines.
A typical bowling pin competition still consists of handguns chambered in large calibers such as .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum, and 10 mm, since these have the power to effectively knock bowling pins off the competition table.
However, if using a large caliber handgun is a bit intimidating to the beginner, some competitions allow the use of handguns with calibers as small as .22 LR or 9mm. In these competitions, the goal is usually to simply knock the bowling pin over, rather than completely clear it from the table.
Still, other competitions allow for the use of a shotgun or rifle to clear the bowling pins.
Competition
Depending on the type of competition, different classes of firearms and calibers may be used to achieve your goal.
A standard bowling pin setup consists of either five pins placed on a waist-high table three feet from the rear of the table or three pins on a waist-high table with two pins on a second shelf placed above the table. The goal is to knock over or clear the table of all the pins and to do so as quickly as possible.
Final Thoughts
Whether you decide to try your hand at IDPA style shooting, 3-gun, or bowling pin shooting, you’re sure to find an event that will test your skill, accuracy under pressure, and competitiveness—all of which will contribute to you becoming a better, more knowledgeable shooter.
Range owners and managers looking to provide these types of events should also ensure that their range is safe for all shooters. You Operate a Firing Range. We Get the Lead Out!
