“Can I get all the locks changed?” I ask the locksmith on the other line getting irritated with his response. I start to walk to the dairy section of the grocery store, balancing the phone between my shoulder and my ear. “Yes when can you do it?” again another answer I wasn't waiting to hear at all.

“Nothing sooner?” I ask.

I might as well take my chances. I sigh.“Ok… next week is fine”

After pressing the end button and bringing the phone away from my ear, I see Cameron checking out the eggs seeing if any of the were broken. She sees that I got off the phone she begins voicing her opinion on the situation. “I cannot believe that psycho bitch showed up at work...damn it I knew I shouldn't have went to that stupid dentist appointment.”

I cringe a little just thinking about her showing up to my new office makes me want to become truculent all over again and actually fight her. “Cameron”

“What? I wanted to see all the action”. She pauses placing the eggs in the cart, she grabs the end of the cart slowly walking around to the cheese section. Opening the glass door. “Seriously girl why haven't you called the police yet”

I snort at her comment,“And say what? My trainer wants me to win a boxing match give her the death penalty”

“I'm serious Azalea, she's like on some stalker shit she showed at the job and practically threatened you” Cameron stressed, grabbing a pack of some pepper-jack cheese she threw it in the cart.

I shake my head side to side, pulling on one of my curls. “No I don't need Gerald thinking that I can't handle my own problems...I just got the promotion.”

She turns to me a hand on my shoulder, she tilts her head to the side smacking her lips, “Well you need to do something” She pauses looking at me then she clasps her hands together. “I say you me and Griffin all move to Jamaica and change our names..my name could be, Kalisa oh and you could be Raeni”

I gasp chuckling a little by her suggestion, but I'll play along with it. “I look like a Raeni I was thinking more like Taniyah”

Cameron's eyes get wide as she leans down on the cart her smile getting wide. “Yessss fabulous name”

See this is why I love her, she always know what to say to get my spirits back up. We turn the corner, “Now we got to work on our backstories….”

“Azalea?” I hear a familiar voice call out to me down the aisle, I squint my eyes into the crowded aisle before me, that when I see her blonde hair and her brown eyes coming closer.

She doesn't even live in this area...let alone go this grocery store. My lips form a straight line, staring at her. “You usually don't shop over here…”

Just then Cameron jumps in front of the cart, walking closer to Fiona getting all up in her face. “Are you stalking my best friend?”

I grab her forearm pulling her out the way, she really wants to get in a fight with this woman in the middle of a grocery store? I move in front of her glaring at Fiona, “Chill Cameron I got this, you stalking me?”

Her eyes get soft and she has this dazzled look on her face as if she doesn't know what she doing. Placing her hand on her chest, moving her cart to the side so the elderly woman can walk past. “What? No I would never-” She pauses after scanning my cart. She shakes her head and places her finger on her lip tapping on it lightly. “I see some unhealthy choices in that basket of yours”

I see Cameron slip past everyone and grabbing 4 packets of cookies. “Oh my gosh you're totally right we forgot something else” She grabs a tub of ice cream, placing it all in the cart. I had to cover my mouth to stifle the laughs that were coming out.

Fiona turns her attention over to me, pushing her cart past me a little. “Well Azalea I hope you will change your mind about our conversation before-”

“No I'm still not needing your services”

With that she finally walked away, turning the corner and going down another aisle.

Cameron slaps me on the arm, giving me a look. “She's giving me total Carrie vibes”

After that crazy encounter with Fiona at the grocery store with Cameron. I needed to take some time for myself and just relax in the comfort of my own home. I was currently on my computer looking up some dinner recipes for soy sauce chicken when that woman flashed into my head talking about Fiona. I go on google and search up her name, I type in Fiona Wescott, I don't see anything on web so I click the images tab.

Once open. I see a picture of a young girl with dark brown hair and freckles, just like the woman Rita described. I start to investigate further by click on the image, I see a street sign behind her.

Wescott Ave.

That's her last name. This is getting freaky, I go to the maps tab typing in Wescott Ave just to see what pops up and low and behold it's in a town called WillBerry just like woman said. I'm trying to remember what she said her name was.

Was it Jamie?

Jane?

Jean! It was Jean, I search up Jean Wescott in WillBerry.

Nothing shows up

I remember hearing the lady say Oli, I'm guessing as in Jean Oliver so I proceed to look that up and that's when I find her. I find out the truth. I see a bunch of online articles, I click the first link.

Family mourns after father found dead in Gym.

Published: May 2nd 2002

Authorities found a 32 year old man early Tuesday morning in his gym on George Blvd. Keith Oliver the local gym owner had a tragic accident, while he was doing a morning workout a screw seemed to be loose in one of the Bowflex machines and tragically ended his life, His 16 year old daughter Jean found him according to authorities.

“I'm in shock” said Keith’s sister, Carla Oliver.

Jean who is a sophomore at the local high school will be staying with her grandparents for the time being.

“Oh my god what have I gotten myself into” I say quietly, my whole body was shaking. I feel a pair of hands on my shoulders, I jump up and turn my body around bringing my left hand up hitting the person in the throat. When I look down to see who it is I didn't realize Griffin had walked in the bedroom near the desk.

He was on the floor clutching his throat, coughing. I gasp clamping my right hand over my mouth.I reach my hand out to him and he grips it, pulling himself up off the floor.

I give him a sheepish smile muttering a quiet sorry.

He says he understands and starts rubbing his Adam's apple slowly. He clears his throat before speaking. “Did you eat my ice cream?”

I shake my head no, walking out into the hallway. “No there's still some in there.”

Once I'm in the hallway I walk into the living room turning on the t.v. I soon hear Griffin in the kitchen opening freezer door, taking out his vanilla ice cream.

I focus my attention on the remote in my hand, changing the channel to the news station. It's what I hear next that has me mortified.

The blonde news reporter is on the t.v. “Henry Miller was found today, he was floating in a river nearby a local park. Authorities say that it looked to be a homicide but we will find out more after the break.”

It just keeps getting worse, Henry's dead, Jacob still hasn't told me who did that to his eye and now Fiona isn't really Fiona her real name is Jean….too much is just going on. I can't watch it anymore, I turn the t.v. to some game show, I notice I didn't hear Griffin come out the kitchen with the ice cream. I didn't hear him at all, my eyebrows raise as my eyes shift over into the kitchen.

I don't see him.

I start to get worried and I call out his name. “Griffin?”

“Baby?”

I kiss my teeth, this boy better not be playing right now I already hit him in his throat. I don't need him going to hospital next. But as I get up and I make my way to the kitchen I see the ice cream on the floor in front my feet. When I turn the corner and see his body laying on the floor. My heart drops and I scream, “Oh god Griffin!”

“Azalea?” A voice calls out to me, I'm sitting in the waiting room of the hospital currently crying my eyes out.

“Yes?” I ask still looking down, I see a long white lab coat, my eyes trail up to the older man's face. I wipe some tears with my arm standing up.

“Hi I'm Griffins Doctor” he states giving me a comforting smile. I give him a small smile back but I'm honestly scared about what he's going to tell me. He starts looking at his paper on the clipboard in his hands. “We found some Sodium diethyl when he came in, we had to pump it out but it should be clear in a couple of days.”

My arms cross over my chest as my lips twist up. “What is Sodium diethyl?”

“A sleeping powder...Odorless, Tasteless, Classified as a hypnotic...Heavy stuff knocks you out in minutes.” He pauses hesitant with his next statement. “It hasn't been used since the 1950's”

I had to sit down, I can't handle all this, I already have his mother texting my phone non-stop asking about him. Cameron called me ten million times asking which floor I'm on. It's all just too much. I feel the tears coming up again, I place my head in between my knees taking a moment to breathe.

When I open my eyes while my head is still down I see his dansko shoes inching closer to my body, his voice softer than before and he asks me. “Ms. Lewis have you and Mr. Hillman been fighting recently?”

My head shoots up, looking up at him. “No we haven't what are you trying to imply? You think I did this?”

He puts his hands up in surrender, “I'm just asking a question-”

I shake my head. “No you think that I tried to kill my boyfriend why in the fuck would I do that...I love him.”

“Look I don't want to believe you did this-”

Our conversations got interrupted by Cameron literally sprinting down the hallway, she bumps into the doctor. She takes a seat next to me. “Oh hell no this bitch is going to pay”

I turn my body to her nodding, I start to crack my knuckles. “Right?! I'm ready to fight her right now”

After hearing that the doctor sat down and had a nice and long talk with us about how violence wasn't the answer and how we should call the police if we felt we were in harm's way. Honestly the shit just went in one ear and out the other. But after he left we start to think rationally.

“Look you just have to prove that she's not who she says she is, take it to the police and go from there.” Cameron says as she takes a sip of her water that she got from the vending machine around the corner.

I sigh looking down tapping on my phone, texting Griffin's mother about what was going on. I still didn't feel right about this police thing...I just don't want to do it too soon.

Great.

Now I'm conflicted.

“What if I don't want the police involved yet..I still have to get more evidence.”

She gives me the side eye, letting out a quick breath. “Do whatever you want but just make sure you have the evidence to back it up.”

After a while Griffins nurse named Jenna said we could come in the room, She told us he was still a bit droopy from the medicine they put in the IV. I see him lying the bed his eyes are barely open but when we open the door and he sees both us standing there, a smile immediately erupts on his face. I thought I was going to cry again but not even one tear. After giving him several kisses and face timing his mom we had to leave the room to let him rest.

While Cameron and I sat in the waiting room sitting beside each other. I turn to her, hoping she will let me get this very important thing from her. “Can you give me your brothers number?”

“Why?”

I smirk, “I just wanna ask him some questions.”

April 6 - 26: Quick North East Tour through 5 states: MD, PA, DE, NJ, MA

I have really been dragging my heels to write this blog post. This was a really fun leg of our road trip; many one of the best yet. It was filllllled with many, many friends but I did a horrible job taking pictures. I hate the thought of my writing having to make up for where our photos missed... If I could do this leg over, I wouldn’t be so camera shy. But if that’s our biggest disappointment on this road trip, then we’re doing awesome! Womp womp.

April 6 we left DC on our way to PA, but we had a brief stop in Silver Springs, MD to visit with the Glovers. We stopped off at Andrew Glover’s home, one of Dash’s college friends, and had lunch with his wife, Mary Claire, and two little boys. We stuck around for a few hours playing fetch, soccer, catch, etc., in the backyard and eating hamburgers. It was a good quick catch up, then we had to jump back in the car and finish our drive out to PA.

Our next stop, and home for the next two nights was Lancaster, PA, at the Goods’ house. Ray, also a college friend of Dash’s, and his wife Mary were such amazing friends/hosts; initially we only intended to stay one night but we ended up stretching our stay to two nights. On a side note: I wish I took more pictures at least because Mary’s home looked straight out of pinterest - I just loved the way she decorated and all the details were so perfectly cozy. Anyway, they had two little ones that were super cute and super into Newman. Surprisingly, Newman willingly hung around the littles and totally embraced them - looks like Grandpa Newman was won over by the Good kids!

Our first night in Lancaster, we had a fun night out in downtown Lancaster with Ray and Mary. Friday night Lancaster, shockingly, was actually quite a busy scene! Our second night in Lancaster, we left Newman with the Goods, and went out to Landenburg, PA to visit a high school friend of Dash’s, TJ and his wife Mary Fran. Landenburg is near Newark, DE, where Dash went to HS, so decided to tour Newark for the night. We met TJ/Mary Fran’s four kids (!!), then took off to visit Dash’s old neighborhood. I got a picture of his childhood home, but sadly I didn’t take any other pictures.

What I made sure I took plenty pictures of? Buggies! No trip to the Amish country is complete without spotting some buggies. This was such a novelty for me, having only seen these in documentaries.

Our visit to Lancaster was rounded out by Dash taking a spin on Ray’s electric bike that Ray somehow built entirely by himself. Dash also promptly crashed the bike in the garage, so thank god for helmets.

Our last stop before we landed in MA, was to see our friends Dave & Jess in Princeton, NJ. Dave & Jess have a one year old puppy, who was just a curly haired little ball of adorableness. We had a little play date in a nearby puppy park, then ate some tasty BBQ lunch at their house. Unfortunately, it had to be a quick visit because we had another 5 hour drive in front of us, but we’ve already made plans to hang out with them again in July...

And so on April 8, our very quick tour of the NE came to an end in Arlington, MA at the home of Dash’s parents. We’ve been here since then and intend to stay in Arlington as our home base while we explore the surrounding area through July. We haven’t done much exploring since we’ve arrived, other than a few neighborhood hikes, and evenings out.

While in Artlington, we’ve taken advantage of our newfound (albeit short term) stability to cross some chores off our list. Our clothes have been consistently laundered. We’re back on a gym routine. Dash has done the dreaded dentist check up, and updated his phone plan. And even Newman got his annual clean bill of health.

But now that April is nearing it’s close, I’d say that we’ve gotten ourselves adequately comfortable over these last few weeks, which means we’re due for some more exploring. On to NYC for a few days then...

The Enduring Harms of Trump’s Muslim Ban

As the Trump presidency draws to an end, we near the 4-year anniversary of the birth of one of its defining and most damning legacies: the Muslim ban. When Trump implemented his first Muslim ban, the public response was immediate. Crowds of protesters flooded airports in support of Muslims and other impacted communities who were immediately being detained or turned away all over the country. Lawyers and immigrants’ rights organizations nationwide, including the ACLU, filed a series of lawsuits as court after court ruled to block the ban. Despite the backlash, Trump issued new iterations of the ban to circumvent the law and conceal its real purpose, which in his own words was to block Muslims from entering the United States. Ultimately, the Supreme Court allowed the third iteration of the ban to be implemented. The Trump administration then further expanded the ban, explicitly targeting Africans. As a result, people from 13 countries still remain barred from coming to the U.S. Four years after the Muslim ban became a reality, families still remain separated, people are unable to celebrate life events or mourn the loss of loved ones, and dreams are faltering for millions of people worldwide. The stories of Neda, Anwar, Farah, and Haya show us how the Muslim ban has derailed lives and will continue to do so until President-elect Biden rescinds the ban.

Throughout my life, it’s never been easy for an Iranian person to come to the U.S. through the usual channels that a person of any other nationality would be able to go through without hassle. It has always been a super scrutinizing process. The background checks can take up to a year even for a simple visitor visa. I know this process very well, since I have been trying to bring my parents here for almost a decade. My sister and I moved to the U.S. in 2011 for a better life and to join our brother who had moved to the States four years prior. Ten years later, my brother is a dentist, my sister is an architect, and I am an attorney. We have all built lives and families here. My parents have never been able to enjoy our success because they cannot be with us. In 2017, my brother finally became a U.S. citizen, and we were so excited to bring my parents over through a family-based immigration process. By the time we could apply, the Muslim ban went into effect and we had to kind of give up any hope on getting my parents here. At the same time, it was so scary because of the uncertainty about what it meant and how it would affect people. My siblings and I spoke with various attorneys, and nobody knew anything. That was the scariest part, just not knowing how the ban would affect everyone. We decided to try applying for them anyway, hoping that the ACLU and other amazing attorneys would be able to get the ban overturned at the Supreme Court. Four years later, we are still separated because of the Muslim ban. My parents have had to miss so much in our lives. I’ve been with my husband for 8 years and married to him for 2 and my parents have never met him. They have never met my brother’s wife either. They had to attend our weddings and graduations via FaceTime. I know it’s difficult for them, not knowing when or whether they will ever see their children again, but they try not to show it. They’re hopeful that things will change at some point and they’ll be able to come here and meet all these important people in our lives.

I love America and its people. But I wish we would look at Muslims and other people perceived as different as people instead of attaching qualities or preconceived notions to them. It’s very cliche, but that’s the first step in understanding anybody outside your own little bubble. If we’re going to change anything for the better, that’s where it has to come from — trying to understand people who don’t necessarily look like you or have the same religion. What I miss most about my parents is their constant bickering. They are best friends, and cannot be away from one another for more than two seconds. They’ve been married for over 40 years and they never run out of things to talk, laugh, and bicker about. They have set an example that I’ve spent my whole life finding — that friendship in marriage. For the past eight years, my in-laws have been my surrogate parents here, and I can’t wait to put those two sets of parents together and just watch them interact. My parents’ English is not amazing, but I’m sure they can communicate through the language of love. I can’t wait. There are so many places we want to take my parents and so many people we want them to meet. It’s been so long and it feels so unattainable. I get emotional just thinking about it. A few years ago, I was announced a winner in the American immigration lottery. I then began a long and tiring journey to get my visa. The war in Yemen made the process extremely difficult. Many airports and government buildings were closed. In order to get my passport, I had to move as fast as I could through militant-controlled areas to reach the city of Maarib. Along the road, there were checkpoints where soldiers would investigate passengers and verify IDs and travel plans. The journey took more than 16 hours Once we had our passports, my wife and I sold all of our possessions and borrowed money from friends so we could travel to Djibouti because there is no American embassy in Yemen. It was a challenge just to get there. Travelers from Yemen must first go to Egypt or Sudan to get entry visas from an embassy in Cairo or Khartoum. After I finally arrived in Djibouti, I spent six months awaiting my visa. During that time, I lost my job and spent all the money I had saved. I was miserable because I had pledged to repay my friends as soon as I arrived in America. And then I got a rejection letter in the mail. My visa was denied because of the Muslim ban.

I had dreamed that my two young children, Nadra and Mazeen, would get to live away from the war and poverty in Yemen, that they would get an education and build a wonderful future. But we are still living in Yemen, where the state of the country is deteriorating every day. Now, thinking about the future frustrates us. It feels as if our dreams are slipping away, and we fear we may find ourselves unable to educate our children or provide them with food and medicine. Still, we are hopeful that the Muslim ban will be lifted. We trust America, its constitutional institutions, and the justice system. We want the new American government to hear our voices and rescind this ban retroactively so that my lottery visa is not lost. I am optimistic that they will. Coming to America would help me guarantee a safe life for my family and a bright future for my children.

HAYA

I was in high school when President Trump started talking about banning Muslims during his campaign. As a Syrian American, I had become accustomed to the discriminatory immigration system, especially after 9/11. But here was Trump literally saying, I’m going to ban Muslims, live on TV. Just hearing those words was confirmation that people like me and my family are not equal. It felt like violence. The words hurt, but I didn’t think Trump was being serious. I thought it was all for show. Even if he tried to enforce a ban, I was sure that some court would block it. There was just no way I could imagine America enforcing the ban, even though it basically just put onto paper all the discriminatory immigration policies my family had been dealing with since 9/11. So I was horrified when, just a few days after he took office, he made his Muslim ban a reality by signing the executive order. I was a senior in high school at the time — just a few months away from graduating. Because of the Muslim ban, my parents and 14-year-old sister could not get visas, so I had to attend my graduation alone. It was traumatic for me emotionally, to be physically separated from my family at a time like that. And I couldn’t even communicate with them freely because where they live, there’s no freedom of speech. So if I talk about politics on WhatsApp, for example, I could put them in jeopardy. It was just a really bad separation, and I felt it deeply.

I am the only U.S. citizen in my immediate family. My parents came here from Syria to build a better life, one free of oppression. Due to my dad’s job, however, we had to relocate a few years later back to the Middle East. There, I spent much of my childhood living between Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, visiting family and friends in Syria for holidays or special occasions. When the war in Syria broke out in 2011, though, that became increasingly difficult. After the Muslim ban became a reality, we felt trapped. We couldn’t return to Syria because of the war. We couldn’t live permanently in Saudi Arabia or the UAE because we are not Saudis or Emiratis. Now we could not go to the U.S. — at least, not as a family. We were stuck. Out of desperation, my parents decided to reach out to distant family members in Canada and see if we could immigrate there as refugees. That’s where we are today. I am currently in university, studying political science. When I first wrote to the ACLU in 2018, I said I couldn’t believe that a country that prides itself on its commitment to freedom and justice would close its doors on refugees and immigrants seeking help. I knew that was not what America was supposed to be. That’s why I am optimistic that the new administration will rescind the Muslim ban and restore hope to families like mine that have been separated for too long. It would be an important first step in reforming racist immigration policies, especially from the post-9/11 era. I dream that one day, the country I was born into will treat me as equal instead of discriminating based on nationality and religion.

I am a member of the Baha’i faith, a religious minority that faces discrimination in my home country of Iran. I immigrated to the U.S. because I wanted to live in a place where I would not be discriminated against because of my name or religious customs. For the past several years, I have worked as a caregiver for elderly patients. When the Muslim ban was announced, I did not think I would be affected because I am a U.S. citizen and I am not Muslim. A few months later, when I applied for a visa to bring my fiancé here, I learned that I was wrong. My application was rejected immediately. I didn’t know it was possible to be treated this way in America. I was used to facing discrimination in Iran, but discrimination feels different when you’re not in your birth country. I’ve now been trying for years to bring my fiancé here. Most recently he had an interview at the U.S. consulate in Istanbul. I was hopeful that this time we would be successful and went to meet him there. But the consulate just gave me a waiver and told me to apply again. I filled out all the paperwork again and still, I am waiting. My fiancé and I were supposed to be married by now and living in America, our new home. Instead, we are stuck in limbo, still separated because of the Muslim ban.

The past few years have been mentally exhausting. Every time immigration officers tell me to do this or that, I have to get a lawyer, I have to do interviews, I have to pay a lot of money. I have friends and family who have gone through much worse because of the Muslim ban. One of my friends had a baby, and her mother could not get here to be by her side for the birth, even though she had a visa. My niece was hospitalized after a car accident and her husband, who was in Iran, was not able to come. A lot of families are separated, with one part here, another part there, unable to reunite during difficult times. At work, a lot of my coworkers know about the problem with my fiancé. They keep asking if there’s news, if he got here yet. And when I say no, they always say sorry. I don’t want to keep hearing the word sorry. I don’t want to be treated differently. I just want to be a citizen like everybody else. It’s my right to live here with my fiancé. I have no choice but to keep trying. I won’t give up.
