Incorporating Pitchfork into a men’s magazine also cements perceptions that music is a male leisure pursuit, and undermines the fact that it was women and non-binary writers – Lindsay Zoladz, Jenn Pelly, Carrie Battan, Amanda Petrusich, Sasha Geffen, Jill Mapes, Doreen St Félix, Hazel Cills; the fearless editing of Jessica Hopper and then the most recent editor-in-chief Puja Patel, to name but a handful – who transformed the website in the 2010s. It also suggests that music is just another facet of a consumer lifestyle, not a distinct art form that connects niche communities worthy of close reading, documentation and, when warranted, investigation. It was Pitchfork’s Marc Hogan who reported that Win Butler of Arcade Fire – a band entwined with the site’s rise to relevance – had been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women (extramarital relationships that Butler says were consensual); Pitchfork that published writer Amy Zimmerman’s report into 10 women accusing Sun Kil Moon songwriter Mark Kozelek of sexual misconduct (Kozelek denies the allegations). I wonder whether GQ will invest resources into reports like this, to sit alongside e-commerce pieces on how “The Best Cordless Stick Vacuum Will Turn You Into a Clean Freak”, to take one current example from their culture news feed.

Bagless vs. Bagged Stick Vacuums: Which One Wins the Ultimate Cleaning Battle?
Vacuuming might not be your favorite chore, but having the right tools can make all the difference. When it comes to cordless stick vacuums, one of the biggest decisions is whether to go bagless or stick with a bagged model. Both options have their strengths, but which one truly reigns supreme? In this article, we’ll break down the pros and cons of each to help you decide which is best for your home and lifestyle.
Stick Vacuums
Stick vacuums are lightweight, versatile, and perfect for modern homes. Whether you’re tackling everyday messes or deep-cleaning your floors, these devices are designed for convenience. But the real question is: should you go bagged or bagless? Let’s explore the options.
Bagless vs. Bagged: The Basics
Bagless stick vacuums collect dirt and debris in a built-in dustbin, which can be emptied and reused. Bagged models, on the other hand, use disposable bags to trap dust and debris. The choice often comes down to personal preference, but understanding the differences can help you make an informed decision.
The Pros of Bagless Stick Vacuums
Bagless vacuums have become increasingly popular for several reasons:
Cost-Effective: No need to buy replacement bags, saving money over time.
Environmentally Friendly: Reduces waste by eliminating disposable bags.
Visibility: You can see how full the dustbin is, so you’ll know exactly when to empty it.
Bagless models are perfect for those who prefer convenience and sustainability.
The Cons of Bagless Stick Vacuums
Despite their advantages, bagless models do have some downsides:
Messy to Empty: Emptying the dustbin can release dust and allergens back into the air.
Frequent Maintenance: Dustbins and filters need regular cleaning to maintain efficiency.
If you suffer from allergies, the emptying process might not be ideal for you.
Why Choose Bagged Stick Vacuums?
Bagged stick vacuums offer several benefits that make them appealing:
Hygienic Disposal: Dust and debris are sealed inside disposable bags, making them ideal for allergy sufferers.
Less Frequent Emptying: Bags typically hold more debris, so you don’t have to empty them as often.
Better Filtration: Many bagged models offer superior dust and allergen containment.
For those prioritizing cleanliness, bagged vacuums are a great choice.
The Downsides of Bagged Models
Bagged vacuums aren’t without their drawbacks:
Ongoing Costs: Replacement bags can add up over time.
Environmental Impact: Disposable bags create additional waste.
Availability of Bags: Finding the right bag for your model can be inconvenient.
While bagged models excel in hygiene, they may require more effort and expense in the long run.
Cost Comparison: Bagged vs. Bagless
In the battle of cost-effectiveness, bagless vacuums usually come out ahead. Without the need to buy replacement bags, you save money over time. However, bagged vacuums may require fewer repairs since their sealed system protects the motor from dust buildup.
Ease of Maintenance and Cleaning
Bagless vacuums require more hands-on maintenance, including regular cleaning of the dustbin and filters. Bagged models, on the other hand, are easier to maintain, as the disposable bags keep most of the mess contained.
Performance on Allergens and Dust
If you’re dealing with allergies, a bagged stick vacuum might be your best bet. The sealed bags trap allergens more effectively, ensuring they don’t escape back into the air. Bagless models, while convenient, can release dust when the bin is emptied.
Environmental Impact
Bagless vacuums are often considered the eco-friendlier choice since they eliminate the need for disposable bags. However, this advantage depends on how frequently you clean and replace filters, as these also contribute to waste over time.
Which Is Better for Pet Owners?
Pet hair can be a challenge for any vacuum, but both bagged and bagless models have features that make them effective. Bagged vacuums are better for capturing allergens from pet dander, while bagless models offer easy visibility to see when the bin needs emptying.
Convenience and Accessibility
Bagless vacuums win in terms of convenience. You never have to worry about running out of bags or searching for replacements. However, bagged models often require less frequent emptying, which can be a major plus for those with larger homes.
Battery Life and Efficiency
When it comes to cordless stick vacuums, battery life is a critical factor. Both bagged and bagless models are available in cordless versions, but the maintenance and performance of the vacuum can affect its efficiency over time. Regular cleaning is essential for maintaining battery performance.
Top Features to Consider in a Stick Vacuum
Whether you choose bagged or bagless, look for these features in your vacuum:
Strong Suction Power: Ensures effective cleaning on all surfaces.
Attachments: Tools for pet hair, crevices, and upholstery are a must.
Lightweight Design: Easier to handle and maneuver.
Battery Life: Aim for at least 30 minutes of runtime on a single charge.
Conclusion: Choosing the Right Vacuum for You
The choice between bagged and bagless stick vacuums ultimately comes down to your cleaning needs and personal preferences. If you value convenience and cost savings, a bagless model might be your perfect match. On the other hand, if hygiene and allergen control are top priorities, a bagged vacuum could be the way to go.
Either way, investing in a cordless stick vacuum will make cleaning your home faster and more efficient. So, whether you’re battling pet hair or simply want a cleaner space, there’s a stick vacuum out there that’s perfect for you. Ready to make cleaning effortless? It’s time to pick your champion in the ultimate cleaning battle!

The Dyson V15 Detect Cordless Stick Vacuum: A Cleaning Expert’s Choice
Not only does the Dyson V15 Detect improve raw power for a cordless vacuum cleaner, but it also brings several clever features that simplify operation. A particulate sensor is fantastic since it lets the vacuum automatically change its power and indicates the amount of collected dirt. The new laser is an excellent approach to check that you have everything and view dirt. This is it if you seek the greatest. After vacuuming, how do you find out if your house is clean? It does not follow that invisible fine dust particles are absent just because it seems so. Apart from offering the ultimate cleaning experience, the Dyson V15 Detect is meant to prove that your house is clean. While the sensor tells you how much dirt is being picked up, changing the vacuum's power on demand, a brilliant laser illuminates dirt on hard floors. I have never tested any more sophisticated and robust cordless cleaner than this one. Read on to know more… Dimensions 49.6 by 10.5 by 9.8 inches (HLW) Battery Life (Tested) 34 minutes Run Time Up to 60 minutes on Eco Weight 7 lbs. Bagless YES Charge Time 4.5 hrs Suction Power 240AW Filtration Whole-machine filtration Cyclone technology 14 cyclones Warranty 2-year warranty Pricing And Variants Like other Dyson cordless vacuums, the V15 Detect comes in several models with an additional word attached to the name's end. Usually, it's the same base model; occasionally, the variety of tools offered differs. Examining the cost can be challenging, but to give us an indication, we will look at what is directly available to buy straight from Dyson when updating this review. Additional stores could have additional versions and varying pricing. The Dyson V15 Detect is available in the US and costs $749.99. Additionally available for the same price—reduced to $599.99 at the time of update—is the Detect V15 Detect Absolute. They are the same vacuum in two colors; hence, even the instruments used here are the same. At a stated price of £649.99, the UK merely has the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute; at the time of updating, it was discounted to £549.99. Australia is the same; only the V15 Detect Absolute, with an AU$1,449 list price. Whichever iteration you choose will fall under the premium price range. Generally speaking, it's a little less expensive than its Gen5Detect successor ($949.99 / £769.99 / AU$1,549 at list price). Excellent Cleansing First, I evaluated the Dyson V15 Detect when it was entered for a past Good Housekeeping Cleaning Award. We had a winner right away. The V15 Detect showed excellent pick-up and suction regardless of my cleaned surface. I'm a control freak when it comes to cleaning and prefer to override established settings to choose what I think is best for what I require, even though its Auto setting monitors the airflow and adjusts the suction to the surface being cleaned. Using its Eco and Max modes, this vacuum lets me do just that: I could clean light throw rugs without sucking them in and remove more dirt from deeper-pile carpets using the settings I wanted. Valid for every battery-operated vacuum cleaner: the more power you increase, the shorter your run time will be. Simple For Usage The V15 Detect is simple to reconfigure to a handheld vacuum, just as all Dyson cordless vacuums, and the attachments are easy to take on and off as needed. It doesn't stand independently (ugh!); hence, wall installation is preferable for storage. I would much rather have the battery removable than versions that must be charged while still entirely built. While the filter doesn't wholly disassemble for cleaning like on many others we have tested, removing, emptying, cleaning, and replacing the dust cup is easy and handy. Special Qualities The laser beam on the fluffy roller head of this vacuum first and most amazed me. For cleaning my hardwood floors, I would rather have a specific fluffy roller attachment than the mix nozzles many vacuums now offer. Using a laser beam shining on the floor in front of the nozzle to reveal dirt undetectable in normal light, the V15 Detect kicks this roller up a level. When this light shone on the dust and dirt hiding in the corners of my stair treads, they were pronounced! Grabbing them and knowing I was doing a deeper clean was good. The explicit, simple-to-read LCD also appeals to the rear of this vacuum. It displayed the remaining cleaning mode, run time, and battery life, as well as the kind and size of the particles I was gathering. Though it was good to have an indication the vacuum was running as expected, that might be more than I truly needed (or desired!). At first, the display's button seemed a little small, but that was a minor problem I soon adjusted to. Lastly, this creative hair-screw-tool attachment works fantastic to remove pet and other hair from upholstery, vehicle seats, and more without tangling, the same as many Dyson stick vacuums. Pet owners or anybody wishing to give furniture, beds, or other above-the-floor materials a more profound clean will find it ideal. Arranging And Applying The V15 Detect The V15 Detect comes with a quick start guide that walks over the procedures to set it up, not a complete physical handbook. Online are the whole handbook and ASMS-inducing how-to videos covering the setup process. V15 Detect setup is simple. Before you use the device for the first time, you unbox it and all of its accessories, then plug it in and let it completely charge. In 4.5 hours, the vacuum charges dead to 100%. Don't omit this step since Dyson claims it must be wholly charged before its first usage to estimate its running time precisely. The vacuum will ask you to pick your language the first time you use it. English is the default choice; hence, hold the selection button for three seconds to set it. You're in good shape when you see a green check mark on the screen. Starting with the V15 Detect, snap on your choice attachments, press the selection button to choose the mode—auto by default—and then squeeze the trigger. Regarding the V15 Detect—and most of Dyson's previous stick vacuums like the V8, V10, and V11—something that could or might not irritate you is that there is no continuous on feature, meaning you have to hold the power trigger the whole time you're cleaning. Since I only use the V15 Detect (and my previous V8) for touch-ups and cleaning my couch and car and rely mostly on robot vacuums for my floors, I am generally not concerned. If you want to use the V15 Detect as your central vacuum, this restriction could irritate you, particularly if you have a big house. A Dyson spokesman said the trigger "ensures you're not draining extra battery and run-time while also allowing you to quickly move furniture or other debris you see, while vacuuming." Is the Dyson V15 Detect worth the money? It was said, yeah! This is a top-notch vacuum with several clever and valuable features. And you might be able to purchase it on sale—especially during special occasions like Black Friday or Amazon Prime Day—because Dyson keeps innovating and including many of the V15 Detect's features on more recent models. The Dyson V15 Detect Cordless Vacuum Cleaner is a good investment whether your floors are primarily wood, tile, or other hard surfaces – or even if you have a combination of carpets and bare flooring.
