Barry Keoghan and Colin Farrell shared the same air bnb while shooting in Ireland. Barry admits he drove Colin crazy by being messy and eating all of Colinâs favourite cereal - crunchy nut cornflakes. Colin joked about the experience, it was like "living in the episode of [MTV's] The Real World."
Congrats!

Director Kirk Wise, screenwriter Linda Woolverton, and actor Robby Benson on casting the Beast [x]
They gave me an incredible amount of freedom. I didn't want Beast to be a cartoon character. I played it as though I were doing a Broadway show. As if this was a living person. And I wanted him to be funny. By funny, I don't mean shtick or one-liners. I am talking about real comedy. When real comedy works, and is truthful, especially with the Beast, it comes out of the fact that he is so pathetic. For some reason, I really understood that. Ha! Because of that, they gave me a lot of leeway. [x]
My first audition was recorded on, of all things, a Sony Walkman. As a musician, I had branched out into recording engineer and loved to play with sound. When I saw the Sony Walkman I knew it had a little condenser microphone in it, and if I were to get too loud, the automatic compressor and built-in limiter would 'squash' the voiceâ and there would be very little dynamic range to the performance. I did a quick assessment and wondered how many people who had come in to audition for the part were making that error: playing the Beast with overwhelming decibels, compressing the vocal waveforms. I decided to give the Beast 'range.' Because of my microphone technique, and an understanding of who I wanted Beast to be, they kept asking me to come back and read different dialogue. After my fifth audition, Jeffrey Katzenberg the hands-on guardian of the film, said the part was mineâŠ
Beauty and the Beast was so refreshingly fun and inventively creative to work on that I couldn't wait to try new approaches to every line of dialogue. Don Hahn is one of the best creative producers I have ever worked with. The two young directors, Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, were fantastic and their enthusiasm was contagious. I not only was allowed to improvise, but they encouraged it. It never entered my mind that I was playing an animated creature. I understood the torment that Beast was going through: he felt ugly; had a horrible opinion of himself, and had a trigger-temper. Those are things that, if done right, are the perfect ingredients for comedy. Painful and pathetic comedyâ but honest. The kind of comedy I understood...
In the feature world of Disney animation, the actors always recorded their dialogue alone in a big studio, with only a microphone and the faint images of the producers, writers, directors and engineer through a double-paned set of acoustic glass. Paige O'Hara and I became good friends; it was her idea that for certain very intimate scenes, such as when Beast is dying, we record together. We were able to play these scenes with an honest conviction that is often absent in the voice-over world...
The success of this film was the culmination of a team effort but I must say, the honors go to the animatorsâ and for me (Beast), that's Glen Keane â and to Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. This was the perfect example of a crew who 'cared'. And the final results (every frame) of the film represent that sentiment. [x]

00 : ZERO.
âIâm sorry, what?â
The car remained silent despite your words of confusion. You felt as though your world had come to an extreme halt, giving you a whiplash as the buzz of the road outside continued to pierce through your ears. There was nothing else to keep your mind away from the absolute bomb of news that was just given to you; your manager had turned it down before uttering the horrid sentence that brought your untimely demise.
The car may have kept on with its task of moving forwardâbut you were stuck frozen in place.
âYouâre joking.â
Your world fell on seemingly deaf ears. The man up front, steering the wheel, rendered himself mute to your growing distress, finding the busy traffic of city life interesting enough to keep his eyes glued. But the urban chaos didnât distract you one bit from brewing a storm of gunpowder inside your throat.
And just like that, a ghost of a click was heard.
âNoâplease tell me youâre joking,â you voiced out, tone betraying your attempts at keeping things respectful. It soon came to your attention that the effort was of no use, as your manager still chose to keep his peace. âChangbin!â
The car swiveled a bit off-lane for a second before returning to its correct course. Normally, such an abrupt action by a vehicle would concern you, as you would argue that you were still much too young to suffer at the hands of a road accident, but no such thoughts even made their way into your brain. Just like how time had stopped for you, there was no time for debating over survival either. One life-or-death situation was already enough for you.
You wanted answers, and you were going to get them.
Changbin exhaled audibly from the scare he just put both of you through. His hands shook with a slight tremor, and that was all it took for him to decide that pulling over to the nearest parking area was for the best.
âDonât yell in the car like that!â You scoffed at his scolding, finding the whole situation ironic.
âOh, so you can do it all the time, but I canât?â You shot back. Changbin sighed tiredly, finally registering the extent of your agitation. "Plus, I have a perfectly good reason why Iâm yelling!â
âListen, Y/N, itâs really not that badââ
âYes, it is that bad!â The words spill out of your mouth in utter disbelief at his attempts at assurance. âIâm working with Kim Seungmin, of all people!â
âAnd thatâs why itâd be fine!â Changbin argued, running a hand through his already tousled hair. You blinked at his reply, baffled by the sheer implication.
ââHow?â
Changbin clicked his tongue at the question, finding it hard to digest just why you were so against working with the mentioned actor. With the mere sound of that actorâs name spat out of your mouth, one would think that he had somehow managed to offend your entire bloodline. But that kind of bitterness could only be achieved through a sour history, so you really couldnât empathize with your managerâs mindset either.
Even you knew that this movie would be enormously successful from the director alone. Director Han Jisungâs influence and presence in the industry were not a laughing matterâin fact, you should already be trembling in anxiety just knowing that you snagged probably the biggest role youâd ever get in your whole career. He was only around the same age as you, but the winding list of his achievements was already one for the records. And yet, here you were rethinking your contract with him even before the project started.
Just because of who you were going to be acting alongside with.
âSeungmin is a nice person,â Changbin explained gently like he was coaxing a child, intentionally ignoring the way your face scrunched up at what he said. âI did my research, ok? Everyone only has high praises for him, both on and off-set. Isnât that enough to be trusted?â
You bit your tongue to stop yourself from digging a deeper hole to lie in. The answer was noâit wasnât enough to be trusted. Now, at this point, someone wouldâve had half a mind to ask why you were so sure about your vendetta against the man. If a person was so well loved in a world where cameras were pointed at them in every waking minute, then shouldnât all the dirt be found by now, if there was any?
To that, your answer would be yet another no.
Because you knew Kim Seungmin. You knew how life functioned despite the cameras. And you knew that it was harder to keep a good shot hidden than it was to delete a bad one.
âTurn the car around.â
Changbinâs eyes almost popped out of their sockets at your demand. Surely, he had heard you now. You crossed your arms and leaned back to rest comfortably on the car seat, turning your head to face the window and glare at the world outside, continuing on with their lives like a well-followed routine.
âY/N, this is a big opportunityââ
âI said, turn the car around. Iâm not attending this cursed table reading.â You pinched the bridge of your nose to keep the incoming migraine at bay.
âYou really think Iâll willingly step into a room with the devilâs incarnate? Iâd rather get shotââ
01 : ONE.
ââsensing a great shot!â
Director Han Jisung nodded positively at your performance, satisfied with your initial portrayal of the female lead.
âIf we keep going like this, then Iâm expecting this project to be a big hit. The casting team really did their payâs worth on this one,â the young director hummed. âEspecially you, Actor Kim Seungmin. I donât know how they managed to get through your company's walls, but Iâm glad they did. Youâre perfect for the role!â
You felt your eye twitch as the figure bearing the name appeared within your vision. His mouth curled up into an arrogant smirk, hastily covered up by a bashful smile. You cringed at his actions that only you seemed to see. Why was this prick acting all humble?
âAh, I always wanted to act in one of your films, Director Han. This is more of an amazing opportunity for me than you, honestly.â
That smoothed honey voice wrapped itself around the roomâs premise, charming everyone around like it was coming from an alluring siren. All except you.
Your mouth filled with a coating of spite as his next sentence echoed through your ears. His eyes locked you in as a target, a wordless challenge shooting straight at your own.
âPlus, seeing who my co-star is, Iâm quite thrilled to see the end product,â Seungmin grinned with a manic glint.
Fuck. You shouldâve turned that damned car around yourself. Maybe then youâd be enjoying a relaxing time in the tub, surrounded by bubbling suds of fragrant soap, instead of being a frontliner in this mental war your acting counterpart seemed to subject yourselves to. Now, you had to withstand the feeling of your body instantly going on auto-pilot after his words.
It was commendable, reallyâhow Seungmin could take over a space of this size filled with various types of people so easily. He had major talent in that field, which greatly accentuated his acting power. Seungmin had a way with words, and while you would never be caught praising him out loud, you couldnât help but acknowledge the bitter truth deep inside the darkest parts of your brain. It was almost obsessive, the way your mind zeroed in on his presence. Even as you let the busy table chatter away into a buzzing noise that barely made its way coherently through your ears, your eyes stayed glued to the figure in front of you, carefully studying his mannerisms as he enthusiastically interacted with everyone. You werenât someone who Seungminâs charms would work onâinstead, you felt like prey, waiting to be pounced on any second now.
Before you knew it, the table reading came to a close. You could faintly remember standing and packing your things quietly, more focused on the sudden stinging feeling you felt coming from your eyes, already threatening to water. âThis is ridiculous,â you huffed in frustration. Why did you feel the need to cry like a child at this very moment?
âWith the way your script is being shoved in that tiny bag, yeah, I would say that too.â
âLeave me alone, Kim.â
You hear him chuckle, causing your grip on your leather bagâs opening to become tighter, feeling the metal zipper bite at your palm. âThereâs a lot of Kims here, Y/N. Be careful now; they might mistake you for being rude to them,â he chirps. Fucking chirps. Like a small bird who deserves to be doted on. Except the man before you was neither small nor deserved to be doted onâKim Seungmin would never be described in any of those words in your world.
âRight. Since theyâre also talking to me right now,â you scoffed back. Thankfully, that seemed to keep the tears at bay for now. You refused to break down in front of the most infuriating man in your life.
âStill stuck up as ever,â he sighs. Your eyes almost popped out of their sockets at his comment. You? Stuck up? If anything, that would be him! âThis would be our first piece together after that charity drama our acting academy did way back a few years ago, so would it kill you to be civil?â
Ah. There it was. The infamous acting academy.
JYP Academy of Theatrics was admittedly one of the most successful acting academies in the country, known for producing many big name acts throughout its years of operation. Every aspiring actor has probably gone through the phase of wanting to be part of the academyâs carefully limited population of traineesâyou included.
You remember the first time you brought up your plans on becoming an actress to your parents; their apprehensive faces telling you to try going to an acting academy first before giving up everything and running towards your dream blind. Young you didnât realize the underlying implication that your parents were expecting you to be discouraged and give up on your thoughts of becoming an actress for good. Instead, you aimed high with the thoughts of their support, confidently applying for JYP Academy.
To your parentsâ surprise, you passed both rounds of the screening, becoming a full-fledged acting academy trainee at one of the most prestigious places for it. It was also where you met the thorn in your life that was standing before you at the present.
âAnd frankly, Iâm looking forward to this. So can we not ruin the mood on set?â He had the nerve to add. That was all you needed for your last string of restraint to snap.
âWhy? So you could enjoy the power trip of watching me fumble around like a headless chicken after getting scolded a thousand times for my horrible acting skills?â
âWhat?â
You watched as Seungminâs face morphed from exhaustion into a look of confusion at what you had just said. However, you knew better than to give him the benefit of the doubtâso you continued to shoot your bullets at him.
âI know you, Kim Seungmin,â you motioned towards him. âDonât you dare think Iâve forgotten your days at the acting academy, especially that damned charity drama. But consider yourself lucky, since I wonât drag your ass down this time, Golden Boy. In fact, watch me shine on set even if itâs against your will or whatever is going on in that ego of yours, because I refuse to bow down to you. Things may have been different seven years ago, but Iâve grown since then. So if you want to prove to me that you have to, then know how to keep your mouth to yourself around me.â
After your little round of firing the pent-up rage inside of you, you snatched your bag from the table and stormed out of the room without another word. You had half the mind to worry if anyone had heard your little squabble with Seungmin, but you were already too far down the hall to go back and check, risking a blow to your conscience if ever you tried to go back. You only had the fact that you had managed to keep your voice surprisingly low throughout the whole exchange to console you.
With this, you continued your trek towards the parking lot to meet your manager once againâblissfully unaware of the state in which you left your co-star back in the room.
âWhat the fuck just happened?â
It took everything in Seungmin to not march after you and demand an explanation for what you had just said to him. In all honesty, Seungmin was baffled. Out of all the possible scenarios he had imagined to happen when meeting you, this was definitely not one of them. Sure, you two werenât exactly the best of friends way back in your academy years, but he had at least considered you an acquaintance.
Even then, he didnât remember your relationship being this bad. For all the times the both of you clashed heads, he couldnât recall a single time serious bad blood was developed. The memory of you laughing joyfully as he messed up a line in your shared scene together on a monthly evaluation was still fresh in his memoriesâso just where did this hostility come from? If he were to base his conclusion off your words earlier, then it must have something to do with the charity drama, and that only made Seungmin more lost.
What you said earlier did hold some truth to themâyou were scolded a lot by their advisor, slash project director, but in no way did you do badly in the production. Seungmin could testify to that. After all, he was witness to the amount of praise you got from fellow trainees as they watched you act out your scenes on camera, even though his younger counterpart was jealous of all the positive feedback. So now, he really couldnât understand where your deep-rooted bitterness towards him came from. He even gave you some tips during the times you seemingly struggled with their advisorâs vision!
âSeungmin?â
He turned over to where his name was just called, seeing his manager approach him while bowing politely towards the small number of production staff left in the room. âOh, did I take too long, Minho?â
âYeah, but itâs alright. I knew you were going to catch up with a friend,â Minho looked around for a bit before continuing, âSpeaking of which, did she go already?â Seungmin couldnât stop himself from clicking his tongue at his managerâs words.
âItâs a long story.â
Well, two can play that game. If you truly knew him like you said you did, then you would know that Kim Seungmin isnât one to give up when he sets his mind to something.
02 : TWO.
You wanted to give up right at this very moment.
Today was the first day of filming for the movie you were cast in as the female lead, yet here you were, one push away from having a mental breakdown. It was your first lead roleâone that you had wished on countless stars to get ever since signing a contract with your current agency. Yet, now that you actually have it, you were left unsure of whether your acting could do proper justice to the character given to you. The confidence you flared towards Kim Seungmin a few days ago was nowhere to be found right now as anxious thoughts swirled through your head instead.
When you first read the script as one of your managerâs proposals for your next project, you instantly felt like the female leadâs role spoke to you the most. The plot itself was a masterpiece, clearly right up Director Hanâs alley with its sentimental undertone and themes of self-discovery. It followed the male lead, returning back to his hometown for a high school reunion after just deciding to quit his job at a well-known corporation in the city. At the reunion, he meets the female lead, whom he remembers having the biggest crush on back in his teenage yearsâbefore he moved to the city for college.
In comparison, the female lead never left their homey countryside town. She attended the nearby community college and also settled her adult life in the same area. However, that didnât mean that what she had achieved was all she wanted to do in life. Like everyone else, she too, had her own dreams. Unfortunately, she lacked confidence in herself to chase opportunities and got stuck right where her starting line was.
And in a way, she spoke to you.
You didnât want to admit it, but perhaps you regret running your mouth like that at your co-star during the table read. It was a moment of weakness, you tried to tell yourself. Emotional you talked too big for what you could handle, so now you were left here to deal with the consequences of your actions.
But lies had their truths too.
It was true that you wanted to shine on setâoutshining Kim Seungmin was just an added bonus to the thought. Youâve spent far too long in othersâ shadows, never really feeling like you had the chance to show your fullest potential. That was something you fought for constantly, starting from your days at the academy up until the present, only to have no such luck. Maybe that was why you developed a habit of becoming pessimistic at the worst times, becoming your own enemy as you fall into a pit of self-sabotage, effectively going against everything youâve ever wished for yourself. It was a cycle of keeping yourself confused with your own decisions, and it was a frustrating process.
You could only stare from the actorsâ corner on the site as you watched the crew members run around making final arrangements for todayâs shoot. Normally, you wouldnât have seen this part of the process, as actors would often arrive later on when everything was nearly set, during their actual call time. You just intentionally went early, deciding that you werenât going to get any more sleep even if you tried, seeing as most of the previous night was spent trying to make sure you had your lines all perfected. Sleep came rough yesterday, and you had no one else to blame but your own nerves.
At least the set looked greatâtoday you were filming all the scenes needed for the high school reunion. The place was this quaint function hall in a small town about seven hours from the capital city, the same town you would be staying in to shoot for a little less than a week. You couldnât help but think that maybe the new environment contributed more towards your slowly diminishing confidence, feeling yourself too far away from the strong presence of individualistic urban life. A defeated sigh was all you could do in attempt to ease yourself, even the slightest.
âIâm beginning to think this is going to become a pattern,â you hear a familiar toned voice comment. âMeeting you distressed, I mean.â
You spare the figure a half-hearted glance before rolling your eyes, forcing out an appropriate greeting. Or what was appropriate in your books, anyway.
âOh, itâs you.â
Seungminâs face displayed his feelings of amusement, which in turn made your frown deepen. âNot even a good afternoon? Thatâs harsh of you, Y/N,â he says in a tone made for mockery. âYou really donât like seeing my face, huh?â
âMore like, I just donât like you, period,â you grumbled in annoyance. âAlso, why are you even here this early?â
Your surprise at his punctuality was real; you were not expecting to see him on set three hours early. But maybe you should have foreseen this behavior, seeing as the Seungmin you knew back then was also one to be on time during all lessons, activities, and practices. A part of you was then thankful for the question coming off as general because if you added any more comparisons, it wouldâve seemed like you held on to too much information on him from the past.
âJust because Iâm the main character doesnât mean I should be fashionably late. Would it tick you off to know that I like being punctual with things?â
âYeah,â was your immediate reply, not needing to think about it any further. âSince now, I have to time myself to arrive just before the call time.â
Seungmin lets out a deep sigh at your words. âYou donât want to spend any more time with me than necessary, got it.â He says, then lifting a finger up to tap against his ear. âBut you know, you should really learn to keep your plans away from enemy ears.â
You tried your best not to show the inner war that just sparked inside of your headâyou really shouldnât have found that small gesture attractive, but the romantic side in you swooned so easily against your will. And for what? Kim Seungmin, of all people? You really should tone down all the enemies-to-lovers content you were consuming, because this was the last thing you wanted to happen. Real life just doesnât play out like that.
Giving him some slack and perhaps a half-assed attempt at reverse psychology, you replied with a tired tone. âIâll agree with you on that one, so you may walk away now, Kim.â
Except that Seungmin didnât seem to catch the memo.
âSays the one who keeps talking,â he snarks at you. âFor someone who told me to keep my mouth to myself around you, youâre the one who keeps the conversation flowing.â
You rolled your eyes for the second time since starting this conversation. At this point, you were convinced that Kim Seungmin was on a mission to dislocate it. âYou just have to win everything, do you?â
âItâs my charm, I suppose.â
âAnd I disagree. The only charm you have is that mouth of yours you use to manipulate everyone around you.â
That seemed to snap something within Seungmin. âWhat the hell did I ever do to you?â He spits out furiously. âI wouldâve already sued you for defamation if you acted like this around everyone else, so you should be thankful that Iâm being tolerant of your attitude right now.â
âThankful? Why would I be thankful?â Was your baffled response. âYou know, Iâm starting to believe that you donât remember what you put me through all those years ago at all, and itâs only making me more upset that you seem to hold no remorse whatsoever.â
âIf itâs that bad, then go ahead and tell me!â Seungmin hissed in an attempt to keep his voice down and not cause a scene. âI donât have time for this roundabout game you have going on, and honestly, neither should you. We have a high-profile movie to film, and I would never let whatever this is ruin the hard work of a hundred peopleâso get your head out of your ass and either clench your teeth and save the working environment we have or be a dear and solve this issue with me right now.â
Now you were just barely containing your rage. It was at this point that you realized that Seungmin wasnât faking anything; and that made it sting a lot more in your already scarred heart. Of course, someone like him wouldnât understand why you were acting like this. Someone like him, born talented enough to be loved and praised by everyone, would never see the other side that you had to be dragged throughâthe side that existed all because of people like him, too.
âFuck you, Kim Seungmin,â you croaked out through tears. âI knew someone like you would never understand.â
And you ran.
âWhat areâY/N! Come back here!â
03 : THREE.
âY/N, where in the world even are you? You need to come back to the actorsâ tent right now!â
Changbinâs voice boomed through your phoneâs speaker a lot louder than usual, causing you to jerk it away from your ear in pain. Well, you did deserve the scoldingâafter running off to God knows where in a relatively remote town you didnât even know, you would be pissed as hell too if you were your manager. What kind of actress just leaves the set without a single thought like that?
âI swear, Y/N. Do not tell me youâre lost because Iâm pretty sure I left you somewhere safe the last time I saw you,â you hear Changbin huff on the opposite end. âI canât believe you told me that you were going to be fine on your own, and I actually trusted you. Thatâs it! Iâm not letting you wander around the set anymore from this point onwards!â
You couldnât help but find your managerâs rant funny, despite the clear threat being held above your head. âReally? Iâm telling you that itâs almost call time, and youâre just laughing. Fine, go on your own soul-searching, or whatever it is youâre doing. Iâm telling everyone you left your role to go play hookyââ
Oh, you could only wish. After your little squabble with Seungmin, playing hooky didnât sound like a bad option. Sadly, you still had a conscience that weighed on youâeven more hypersensitive to the people around it with your co-starâs earlier comment of ruining other peopleâs hard work. You hurriedly shook your head to get rid of the negative thoughts that were starting to plague your head once again, and instead focused on the group of trees that lined the path towards the entrance of the function hall.
âChangbin, Iâm fine.â
âDamn right, you should be!â He screeches one last time before calming down. âBut in all seriousness, you need to head over here now, or Director Han is going to chew me a new one. He knows my sister, and I donât want to be berated for not doing my job properly by her of all people.â
You chuckled at the competitiveness in his voice. âDonât worry, I just took a short walk for fresh air. You know how nervous I was earlier on the way to the set.â Changbin hummed in acknowledgement.
âAnd on the way to this town in general,â he teases. It didnât last long, though, since he immediately followed up on your well-being with a soft tone. âDid the walk help? I can get you some hot tea too, if you want.â
âLook at you, finally being a proper manager,â you threw back at him, snickering as offended noises started to pour out of your phone. âYeah, yeah. Iâll take you up on that tea offer. Plus, Iâm just around the corner now.â
Once you saw his figure coming into view, you hung up the call and opted to wave your right arm to catch his attention. Changbin broke out into a frantic sprint towards you the minute he saw you approaching.
âOh, thank whatever deity there is. You need to head over to the tent right now andââ He suddenly stopped mid-sentence, holding you still at arms length to give you a look of confusion as he scanned your face. âDid you cry? Why are your eyes like that?â
Shoot. You had totally forgotten about that for a second. âAh,â was all you could muster in a sheepish daze. âIt was just to let the nerves out, you know? Itâs nothing serious.â
Changbin narrowed his eyes at your excuse, making you hold your breath unintentionally. It felt as though you were being picked apart, trying to find the truth that you desperately wanted to keep hidden. Eventually, the man before you decided to let it be, sending you off with an exhausted wave.
âHm. Alright, and itâs already going away, so it mustâve just been a light session. Try to blink it out more so that itâs long gone once you step in front of the cameras.â
You silently breathed out a sigh of relief. âWill do. Thanks, Changbin.â
âStop being a sap and head over to the tent already,â he chuckles before sending you a comforting smile. âGood luck. Iâll just be here.â
A grateful look found its way onto your face as you walked briskly towards the actorsâ tent. You should really treat Changbin to dinner after all of this is over, you think to yourself, putting on your game face and entering the enclosed area with a newly steeled heart.
Now, Seungmin wasnât the type to be overly concerned with othersâ business. While he wouldnât exactly call himself an extreme individualist, he still did have an appreciation for community. You wouldnât catch him dead in the act of trying to mingle with someone elseâs issues if it had nothing to do with him. However, all that seemed to somehow fly out the window whenever it had something to do with you.
To him, you were a person qualified enough to be considered intertwined with his own life. Sure, he hadnât seen you in person for years, but that still would never be able to erase the fact that you knew him behind the cameras. Actually, even worse.
You knew the person he was before he even took up acting as a career.
Perhaps that was why he was so bothered by the way you were acting with him recently. He doesnât even recall ever being that hostile to someone since his high school days, and that alone terrified him. It was like he regressed back to the days of his youth whenever he interacted with youâand that did more harm than good. The younger him was full of teen angst that he wanted to bury deep inside the confines of his past, but the animosity you seemed to harbor personally against him made him wonder if he was truly missing important information from that era of you both.
So when he saw you walk into the tent with fading redness evident in your eyes, just right after your small fight with him earlier, he instantly felt a punch in his gut. In all honesty, he wasnât aiming to make you cryâit just so happened that the spur of the moment was so intense that he spat out things he barely meant. Sure, they still stemmed from the truth of how he felt since he did want to make amends with you, but even he wants to kick himself for the way he worded things so out of pocket. His reaction to the situation was so childish that it would be easier to think he finally went insane from the busy schedules heâs been doing than believe that what he did was a conscious decision. He was supposed to be the mature one at that moment, reaching out to fix the issue.
And yet here he was, feeling like a child in front of you.
He wanted to approach you, apologize for earlier, and maybe another one for whatever stupidity his old self did that was clearly bad enough for his mind to completely block out entirely. If you were reacting this much, it had to be at least somewhat of a traumatizing experience. Seungmin doesnât think he ever got that bad back then, but everyone had different perspectivesâand yes, young him had a tendency to be a prick. He still had friends, though, and no one ever called him in to discuss his behavior, so it wasnât like he was a bully.
Either way, he felt the need to apologizeâand maybe get an apology back, but his legs wouldnât let him. A part of him knew that if he did approach you at the moment, you might run away again, and it was almost time for the briefing. Instead, he settled on looking at you across the pop-up room, hoping that his silent sentiment was delivered.
Which it was not. At all.
If anything, it added more pressure to whatever nerves you were holding back. Seungminâs gaze was so piercing to the point that you didnât even need to turn and look to know that he had his eyes locked on you. What does he want from you now? Oh, rightâyou two would be filming your scenes together in a matter of about an hour or two. Maybe this was Seungminâs way of telling you to get your shit together while finally respecting your wishes to be left alone. Improvement is improvement, so youâd leave him alone to do his thing too.
âAll right, is everyone here?â A lean man in his mid-twenties walked in, asking everyone inside. There was another person following him, yet seemingly younger. âIt seems so. If someone you know is late, just fill them in with the details later.â
The first man lifted up a thick bind of paper, which you quickly recognized as the script. âIâm sure everyone has read their copy of this. My name is Hwang Hyunjin, and Iâm the head scriptwriter for this film. Over here to my side is Yang Jeongin, my assistant. Weâre here to give you a briefing on how this shoot will go for today since Director Han and Assistant Director Lee are busy with the filming crew as of the moment.â
So they were the ones behind the script. You felt your excitement levels increase as various questions about the storyâs making filled your headâbut you would save that for another day. Perhaps during the crew dinner after the movieâs filming was completed.
âToday, weâll be filming one of the first scenes in the movieâthe reunion. Thatâs why thereâs a lot of you are here right now, despite the story only really having a few recurring characters. Still, whatever your role is, I hope you take this opportunity with pride. All of you here will be treated as actors for as long as you stand on this set, so have the dignity of one. Whether you have lines or not, what I expect from all of you is your best, and only your best,â Head Scriptwriter Hwang emphasized.
The briefing continued on with the necessary information for the reunion scene, with detailed clarifications and stage directions. If you werenât locked in on all the information being fed to you, you wouldâve had half the mind to acknowledge how strikingly handsome the man was upfront. A few others did, though, and you couldnât really blame them. The guy could be an actor himself if he wanted to be.
âAnd I believe thatâs all for now,â Head Scriptwriter Hwang clapped his hands in satisfaction. âHair and makeup will take care of you all for about an hour and a half. I see that some of you already came prepared, so go ahead and touch up yourself if you want to. Main characters, you have your own booths,â he glances towards the stations at the end of the tent.
âYouâll be called up when needed. Actor Kim Seungmin, please get ready first since we need you for the entrance shots. That is all. Good luck.â
Head Scriptwriter Hwang bows politely to all of you before exiting the tent with Assistant Yang. With that, the battlefield begins.
You couldnât remember much of what was happening other than you being sat down in front of a well-lit mirror and letting yourself become a doll in the hands of the make-up artists. The one assigned to your hair did start a short conversation about your previous works, to which you could only thank her shyly for her support. While you werenât the most popular actress out there, you were still relatively well-known, with notable works under your belt. Seven years of experience wasnât something someone could just laugh at, after all.
On the other hand, your co-star was a famous A-lister who was most likely getting paid significantly more than you for his role in this film. You glanced a bit to your right, where Kim Seungmin was happily chatting with his hair and makeup assignees, his voice effortlessly traveling its way over to your spot.
Ever the social butterfly, that one.
âAre you excited?â The woman assigned to your hair, who you learned was named Eunha, asked. You looked at her, startled by the sudden topic change. âSorryâitâs just that you kept looking over at Actor Kim that it came to mind. He is quite the looker, isnât he?â
âOh.â
How should you even respond to that? It wasnât like you could just go around advertising your personal beef with the man when, as far as you knew, he had a clean record on his plate. That would just be a lawsuit waiting to happen. Youâd have to settle for something vague instead. âI guess,â you cringe at the evident pain in your voice.
âIâve heard from others in the industry that heâs a great guy. Youâll have a blast filming this movie with him. I know itâs a bit awkward right now, but Iâm sure youâll warm up to him soon. After all, youâre both the lead roles.â
Youâll surely have a blast, alrightâstraight to the ego.
This conversation just gave you the unfriendly reminder that you had to act all lovey-dovey with this man, and if anything, it was triggering some unpleasant memories. By memories, you meant the charity drama from your acting academy days.
Your experience with that project was interesting, to say the least.
It had all started with Seungmin winning the prize of being the dramaâs male lead after getting the top spot on the year-end evaluation for the junior level. Along with his prize came the privilege to choose who he would be acting alongside, only to surprise everyone when he chose you, a trainee who barely got recognition and wasnât even in the top ten of your level. At first, you felt honored. It was like you were finally getting acknowledged, and by the top performer, no less. So you worked hard to do your part properly, wanting to repay Seungmin for his act of kindness; only for that kindness to turn out to be a mockery of you.
The difference in skill between you two was just too wide. Your shortcomings showed far too much, and your mistakes ended up being emphasized to the point that your level advisor became endlessly frustrated with you. First, it was the scolding. The woman clearly did not appreciate you holding back the entire production, especially since it was for a cause, so she would point out every problem in your acting, which quickly took a turn after you showed barely any improvement. Eventually, your advisor started to berate youâgoing as far as constantly referring to you as the reason the drama would fail. When you tried to raise the concern with her that it was affecting you negatively, she only brushed you off with a comment about how you should know to take constructive criticism this early to succeed in the actual industry.
At eighteen years old, you could only clench your teeth and accept your fate.
Things only got worse when you overheard Seungmin talking to his friends near the vending machines after practice one dayâthe same day they were talking about you.
âDude, why did you choose Y/N to be the female lead?â One of Seungminâs friends, Yeonjun, groaned aloud. âSheâs awful at it. What? Do you like her or something?â
Seungmin only shrugged. âNot really,â he said, uninterested. âI just kept seeing her name during level advancements but never saw her doing anything to stand out. If she got this far, then I should give her a chance, no?â Yeonjun pursed his lips at the answer.
âThatâs just cruel, man. The witch has it out for her now.â
âThen she can just do better,â Seungmin chuckles, taking a sip from his soda before continuing. âNot my problem anymore. If I do my role well enough, maybe theyâll pay less attention to whatever sheâs doing.â
Beomgyu, another friend of his, scoffed. âSo, likeâyouâre basically using her to your advantage.â You watched Seungmin wave him off without a care.
âStop making it sound so bad like that,â he hums at the thought. âLetâs just say Iâm saving her the embarrassment. Like you said, it was my fault sheâs getting thrown around like this anyway,â Seungmin continues before tossing his empty can of soda in the trash.
And wow, did you feel like one after hearing that.
Starting from that point onwards, you held a dislike for Kim Seungmin. It did, however, give you enough spite to use as a driving force to do well in the charity dramaâeventually climbing up to senior level right beside Seungmin, where you two clashed for the higher ranks before graduating and starting your own careers.
Despite this, the memory of the junior project still stayed ingrained in you, never really managing to fade away like you wanted it to, causing you to struggle in your quest to succeed in the industry. The deprecating thoughts came at the worst times, making you revert back to that eighteen-year-old who kept her tears at bay as the director shouted at her for the nth time.
It was particularly the worst right now.
âCut! Bad take!â
You snapped your head towards Director Han, who looked so frustrated that he started to resemble a certain someone from the ghosts of your memories. Kim Seungmin was in front of you, his tongue poking at his cheek after hearing the comment. Right, you were at the setâshooting a scene. And you had just failed to say your next line.
âActress Y/N, you canât just keep forgetting your lines like this!â
04 : FOUR.
You really canât go on forgetting your lines like this.
âY/N.â Changbin sighs heavily. âSeriously, whatâs going on?â
It would have been amazing if the gods could hear your plea. Your wish was fairly simple, after allâto be buried six feet under at the moment. To hell with being a popular actress; you wanted nothing more than to disappear right now after that stunt you just pulled. On the first day of filming, no less.
Should you just go dig your own hole instead?
âIt wonât happen again,â you softly replied, like a child getting scolded by their mother.
Your manager could only take a deep inhale at your words. âAnd I believe you, I really do,â he says. âBut I canât just let this go like this.â
Of course, he couldnât. You would do the same thing in his shoes. Changbin was a manager for an actressâan actress who clearly canât even manage herself. Your jobâs core had a simple description, and that was to act out your lines. Lines that you had to memorize, internalize, and perform. What was the point of having seven years of experience under your belt if you couldnât even do the basics of your occupation?
âYou have to understand, Y/N. It wasnât just once, or twice, or heckânot even thrice! You had a minimum of five retakes per couple of lines, and thatâs already concerning enough for me to have to intervene. Director Han was really disappointed today, and itâs only the first filming. The only reason youâre still coming back on set tomorrow is because, at the end of the day, we managed to get good takes despite the issues. So pray tell, is something wrong?â
The humble innâs room you were staying in became devoid of sound from your lack of response, making the cicadas outside seem a lot louder than they actually were. Your sitting figure made you look small in front of the man before you, who was pacing across the room in distressed strides. In all honesty, you had nothing to say back to Changbin. As much as you trusted him like your own older brother, explaining your oh-so-stellar performance earlier would entail having to reveal your past with Kim Seungmin, which was the last thing on the list of secrets you wanted to get out. Thus, there was only one solution to your dilemma.
âCan we replace Kim Seungmin?â
Changbinâs jaw slacked. âWhatâhim again?â He laughed humorlessly, completely baffled at your request. âAnd replace, you say? Y/N, at the rate weâre going, youâre the one in danger of getting replaced!â
Okay, you shouldâve expected that. But the sting from your managerâs comment wouldnât hurt any less, even if you did.
You were well aware of all of your shortcomings as an actress. The seven years you gained in this industry clearly taught you a lot of important lessons, but those same seven years barely did anything to your ability, no matter the amount of effort you desperately poured into your career. It felt like a futile attempt at pouring into a cup that had a big hole at the bottomâknowing you could be filled to the brim with the necessary factors to succeed exponentially, yet still letting everything go down the drain.
Maybe this was the wake up call you needed to acknowledge that youâre the only one holding yourself back. And you had the slight inkling that you knew all along where this whole mess stemmed from.
âIâm sorry.â
âFor what, even?â Changbin ran a hand through his already tousled hair. âLook, if you really donât want to tell me, then fine. Iâll respect your wishes. But you canât expect me to understand where youâre coming from if I know nothing. Deal with how overbearing I could be, or I donât know, just keep that in mind.â
âI understand.â You meekly nodded. âSorry, again. Iâll do better tomorrow.â
With your vague words, Changbin eventually came to the conclusion that you werenât going to speak about the issue today. Walking towards you, he finally accepted your decision with a light pat on the head. âYou donât have to say that to me, Y/N. Maybe to the crew tomorrow. And Actor Kim Seungmin if you want. Just promise me a better performance tomorrow, and weâll be good.â
You chuckled dryly. âYes, Iâll do that.â
âAlright.â Your manager rolled his shoulders back, releasing the tension that built up from his pacing. âIâll go to my own room now. Get some good rest. You need it after what happened today,â he chuckles.
âOkay, good night.â
You plastered a small smile for him, only letting it drop completely after you heard the door shut. After that, it was just you and your mind, ready to play the most depressing thoughts all through the night to beat you down once again. However, you werenât going to fall for that today. You had already promised a better performance on filming tomorrow.
And what better ways were there to achieve both than practice until the sun rises?
Well, that surely did itâs work for you because you walked into the set the next day looking like a few years had just shaved off your lifespan. But as long as you could still function well enough to participate in the shoot, then you would consider your little sacrifice worth it.
A certain someone would beg to disagree, though.
Seungmin has never felt more concerned in his life. Just what in the world did you do all night to come out of your room looking like a literal zombie? To make matters worse, no one was even batting an eye at your less-than-ideal state! He watched you get your makeup done from across the tent with a thoughtful expression.
âIs it just me, or did Y/N get no sleep whatsoever?â
Minho cringed at Seungminâs blunt comment. âOh, you noticed it too?â He purses his lip, feeling uneasy. âI feel bad for her, but after the mishap from yesterday, I wouldnât be surprised if she stayed up all night trying to make sure it doesnât happen again. No sleep is better than no role in this industry, after all.â
Seungmin frowned at his managerâs words. That canât be right. Sure, as actors, getting roles to play was their bread and butterâbut no project was going to be worth more than their own well-being. If your condition was bad, then how were you expecting to have the proper mindset to act well? That should be simple logic.
He huffed. âIâm going to talk to her.â
Before he could even take a step forward, a strong force had already pulled him back. âStop right there, Seungmin.â His manager gripped his shoulder in warning. âI know you mean well, but please do not do anything to agitate Actress Y/N any further.â
Seungmin turns back in disbelief. âWhat are you even talking about?â
âArenât you two close? I know how you joke around when youâre comfortable, and Iâm just letting you know that this might not be the best time to do so.â
The actor narrowed his eyes at the implication being thrown his way. âYou know, youâre making me out to be a major ass right now.â Minho shrugged.
âThatâs because one wrong move, and you might as well be,â he sighs. âLook, all Iâm saying is that what she probably needs right now is support. Someone who would give her motivation to get through the shoot today.â
Seungmin deadpanned at his managerâs sudden advice. He wasnât expecting Minho, of all people, to lecture him about how to properly interact with others. âExactly?â The younger of the two raises a brow. âWhat else do you think I was going to do?â
Minho looked hesitant for a second. âYou and I both know that youâre not exactly the mostââ he trails off, making random expressive movements with his hands instead. Seungmin scoffed.
âSpit it out.â
ââMotivating. Youâre probably the least motivating person here.â
Seungmin visibly blanched at Minhoâs admittance. Truth be told, he wasnât expecting the older man to say anything particularly nice, but the actual reveal was just completely out of his radar.
Even when he was young, Seungmin never struggled with making friends. Heâs always been well-liked by the people around him, which has made him fairly popular amongst his peers. With such a positive response from a lot of people regarding him as a person, Seungmin was clearly gifted in the art of making friends. So now, being told that he lacked the skill of uplifting others greatly confused him. If that were true, then shouldnât he have had the opposite experience with socializing?
âIââ He stutters, caught off guard. âDo my social skills not prove to be enough for you?â
âThose are two completely separate things,â Minho barely managed to suppress a sneer. âSeungmin, youâre great at casual talkâthatâs no surprise. But you also have the tendency to be dense. And thatâs putting it lightly.â
âOh.â
That would make sense. A part of him also admitted that his younger counterpart did struggle with connecting to others. Yes, he had a lot of friends, but that didnât mean he saw all of them equally. As harsh as that may be, the old Seungmin had this unfathomable standard for people he could call friends, which he used as a strict criteria for judging others. He still kicks himself whenever he gets reminded of how big his high horse used to be, for no reason. Seungmin was more than willing to leave that time of his life at the back of his mind to collect dust. His life has been so much better without it, and he would do anything to maintain this satisfactory present he has carved for himself.
His manager chuckled. âWho knows, though? Maybe you could finally practice your empathy with this conversation. Youâve been around professional robots for far too long.â
âThat sounds like an insult,â Seungmin says, expressing his doubt.
âIâm just saying it as it is.â Minho patted his back twice. âNow, I already warned you enough. If you still want to talk to Actress Y/N, then go ahead. Just know that whatever comes out of that mouth of yours is completely your responsibility, and I will not cover for you if you come out of this one with a broken friendship.â
Seungmin let the words sink in.
âThere you go, all done!â Eunha exclaims, lightly pushing your hair forward to make the volume more noticeable. You gave her a thankful smile.
Eunha was someone you'd only known for two days, but she was already becoming your favorite person on set. The way she manages to lighten your mood every time made her worthy of being on the list of people you greatly appreciated, especially with how things were going for you recently. Today too, her positivity was very welcomed.
âThank you,â you say while admiring her work. âIt looks pretty today too.â
The hairstylist beamed. âOf course it should be,â she huffs in pride. âYou need to be the prettiest one here on set. After all, youâre the female lead!â
You knew she didnât mean it to be, but her words felt like little stabs to your heart. The prickly ache spread slowly, like poison that was meant to be discrete. You chuckled to offset the pain.
âRight.â
Female lead. The character you worked so hard forâonly for you to also ruin the chance with your own hands. You couldnât help but think of how ungrateful you were being, and for what? A personal grudge towards your co-star, who was being more professional about the situation than you ever tried to be? It was almost laughable how belatedly you realized that the situation was never going to be in your favor. You werenât someone looking to be pitied, so why were you hypocritically trying to paint yourself as the distressed damsel?
Eunha sent you a troubled glance as she fixed the tools on the table. âAre you alright? Iââ She sighed. âI didnât want to point it out earlier, but I guess my concern got the best of me. The bags under your eyes looked deep earlierâYerin did a great job covering them up, though! You donât worry about how youâll look on camera, but Iâm just worried about your condition.â
You sheepishly scratched your arm at being pointed out. âSorry for worrying you. I just forgot the time last night and fell asleep late. You could say I was too excited to shoot again today.â
âWell, thatâs a lie if Iâve ever heard one.â
You jumped in your chair, startled by Seungminâs voice suddenly joining the space on your side of the tent. Eunhaâs eyes gave you a silent apology before bowing to Seungmin and heading out of the tent, indicating that her task was finished. Your gaze fluttered toward your co-star, who was looking at you in a disapproving manner. It was then that you remembered his comment.
âAnd that was rude of you to disrupt a conversation that had nothing to do with you.â
Seungmin wasnât fazed by your bite. âWhy didnât you sleep?â
âI asked a question first, Kim.â You crossed your arms at being ignored. âAlso, I did sleep.â
"No, you didnât,â he pressed on. You could feel your blood pressure rise at his insistence. âEven a twenty-minute nap could do wonders. You just look horrible.â You scoffed at the insult.
âGee, thanks. Exactly what I needed to hear.â
Seungminâs eyes widened comically, and you almost laughed at the sight. Almost. He looked so guilty of what he had just said that you felt the urge to tease him as revenge.
âWait, noââ
âAn explanation isnât necessary,â you hummed. âEven if that wasnât a joke, I could really care less right now.â
Your reply made Seungmin flail his hands around like a madman. âIt was a joke. I didnât mean anything about it,â he coughs out before composing himself after realizing how silly he was acting. âSorry.â
âOk. Thank you for apologizing.â
âSure,â he trailed off. Seungmin was now unsure of what to even do.
Oddly enough, your heart warmed at his reaction. A part of you was thanking yourself for finally becoming more rational, as you thought that maybe he wasnât so bad. Sure, your past together was still rocky territory, but you had to remind yourself that time had also passed. Seven years at that. That detail took you back to the conversation you two had back at the table reading. You remember the way you hissed at him that you had changedâwhat made you assume that he couldnât do it too? Everyone was allowed to become better versions of themselves, and Kim Seungmin wasnât exempted from that. He was but another person living amongst others in this world, after all.
Changbin was right. Seungmin also deserved an apology.
âI guess I also owe you an apology,â you say softly. âAbout how Iâve been towards you the whole timeâit was immature of me. I hope we can continue to work well until the end of this project, like you said yesterday.â
âNow, this is just odd.â
Seungmin was now utterly lost. He recalls approaching you despite Minhoâs warnings, deciding that he had enough self-restraint to not screw it upâonly to end up insulting you without meaning to. But that wasnât the confusing part.
It was your reaction.
In Seungminâs experience, you werenât one to let something go like that. Even back when you both were in your senior level days at the academy, a simple jest from him would set you off into flames. The you he knew would immediately choose to chew him out, hoping that he would get burned by a rogue ember of your fury for even just attempting to speak such words. But the person in front of him right now did none of that. The you in the present simply took the accidental insult and even apologized for the ones youâve spat out over the previous days. It was a whiplash, to say the leastâjust yesterday he was still fighting to keep you in a flowing conversation. So, what was this he was witnessing?
âIs it?â You snicker. âJust think of it like winning. You were right. This is a high-profile project, and Iâm over here messing around. Iâve prepared a better performance for you all to see today, so be rest assured.â Seungmin still wasnât assured.
âY/N, are you sure youâre alrightââ
âMain characters on set!â
Damn. So thatâs how it feels for your conversation to get interrupted by someone unrelated to it. Seungmin internally acknowledged your annoyance earlier and kicked the memory of himself from a few minutes earlier.
You turned back to him, tilting your head. âWhat was that?â Seungmin refused to admit that he found the action cute.
âNo, itâs nothing,â he said, clearing his throat. âLetâs have a good shoot.â
05 : FIVE.
Okay, you do not think this was turning out to be a good shoot.
You were already regretting pulling another all-nighter the day after you got absolutely no sleep. This meant that you were already nearing 48 hours of no sleep, to which you were surprised you were still even capable of functioning. You had never gone this long without sleep, and it was both thrilling and terrifying to you at the same time.
Honestly, you were already expecting to feel lethargic after the shoot yesterday, especially after staying up the entire night to master your parts and was planning to go to sleep early to make up for it. However, after getting nothing but praise from the directors and filming crew the whole day for your stellar performance that day, you came to the conclusion that perhaps your sacrificial act was exceptionally effective. A little too effective since your manager even said that your acting became much more alive than the takes you did the previous day, despite feeling the complete opposite internally.
Now, while you normally wouldnât describe yourself as someone who was peer pressured easily, it still felt really nice for your hard work to be acknowledged after the disappointing performance you had the day before. Which also led you to your current predicamentâwoefully repeating the same magical process that helped you gain your reputation back.
âYouâre yawning an awful lot.â Seungmin raised a brow in question. âDonât tell me that all the praise you got yesterday already got to your head, and you suddenly find all this boring.â
An irked look made its way onto your face, pinching hard on Seungminâs arm. You watched in satisfaction as he yelped audibly at your damage, jerking away in reflex. âWhat the fuck, woman?â
âItâs what you get,â you say nonchalantly while shrugging. Seungmin scoffs at the response.
âJust because we have a truce now doesnât mean you can abuse me whenever you like,â he snarls. âWhat happened to the Y/N who didnât want me to talk to her unless, quote on quote, necessary?â
You cringe at the unwelcome reminder of your previous activities. âI apologized! Would you rather have me act like a total bitch again?â
âWellâno. That Y/N was a pain to deal with.â
âThen be grateful for what you have right now.â
Seungmin lets out an amused snort, crossing his arms and leaning backwards closer towards the living roomâs walls, where you two were on standby. âOh, believe me. Iâm more than grateful.â
The set right now was in a cozy cottage house, designed to imitate what the female leadâs family home would look like. You had already moved past the beginnings of the main charactersâ romance yesterday and were now heading into the development stage, where they spend more time together until they realize their feelings. A domestic scene in one characterâs home was a popular tropeâwhich was, of course, also included in the movie.
If todayâs shoot goes well, then you only have one day left in the filming process before everyone packs up to head back to the city. Not for Seungmin, though. The male lead still had to film the first part of the movie where he quit his job at the company. Youâd have to laugh at him about it on the last day.
First, you had to get through this shoot without fainting flat on your face.
It was a particularly hot day too, which made your drowsiness even worse. The rural countryside cottage didnât have an air conditioner set up, so you had to make do with fans all over the place. But that barely did anything to cool you down, as the air around the place itself was humid. At least you werenât shooting out in the sun today.
âGeez, my makeup might melt even before we start filming,â you groan. âThatâs if my head doesnât explode first.â
Seungmin chuckles. âBlame your character for being a sweater enthusiast. That outfit must be torture in this weather.â
He wasnât wrong about that. The thick baby blue cardigan you were wearing felt like a punishment to wear at the moment. It was unfortunate that you felt really cute in this get-up because you wanted to trash on it so badly.
Actually, fuck it. Comfort matters more.
âI donât understand how she does it,â you whine dramatically. âEvery scene sheâs had has her wearing some kind of version of a sweater. Does she not get hot at all?â You pull on your slightly weighted cardigan.
âI do think sheâs plenty hot enough.â Seungmin smirks, glancing at you while waiting for your reaction.
You hummed in agreement. âSheâs probably just tolerating it since it's her clothing style. Iâve had my fair share of those moments too.â
It wasnât something you could see since you were more preoccupied with watching the staff prepare for filming, but Seungminâs ears were slowly turning red. He took note of how his less than savory joke completely flew over your head, now leaving him to drown in the embarrassment of his original intentions.
Internally, he was already having a boxing match with himself. He thinks sheâs plenty hot enough? What does that even mean? You were the only image he had of the female lead since you had her role! Seungmin wanted the ground to suddenly swallow him whole at the implication.
You, on the other hand, were fighting a completely different battle. The combination of the heat and your severe lack of sleep was becoming dangerous. You could already feel a growing pounding in your head, the worldâs noise becoming more muffled by the second. It seemed like your vision wasnât affected yet, thoughâand for that, you were relieved. That meant you could still stretch yourself out until the shoot was finished. Youâd already done this once yesterday, so a second time wouldnât be that bad, right?
Wrong.
Seungminâs voice as he carried out his lines in the scene seemed so far away to you already, and it had only been an hour since the cameras started rolling. Internally, you were already sounding the sirens. Something was definitely wrongâyou donât think Seungmin was supposed to sound like he was underwater.
Your co-star seemed to notice that you were out of it too, except he couldnât exactly stop the scene as you were still conducting your parts as proficiently as you could. Director Han hasnât called a cut yet, either. So, he settled on carefully watching you for signs. You also thought you could last until the scene was overâuntil you couldnât.
The last thing you remember was a figure rushing over to you before your sight went pitch black.
âY/N!â
âCut!â
Seungmin felt his heart race as he dashed over to catch you from crashing to the ground. What was going on? You were completely fine a while ago. How did you end up fainting? Could it have been the heat? He didnât think it was going to be that bad for you since he was dealing with it pretty well. The heat wasnât exactly unbearable. So what was it?
âActor Kim Seungmin,â D.O.P. Bang called out. âWe should take her to the medic tent. Someone, call her manager.â
Seungmin had never agreed more to a suggestion in his life.
âSeungmin? Whatâsââ Minhoâs face paled in shock at the sight of your limp figure. âOh, shit. Thatâs why everyone is running around like headless chickens. Quick, letâs get her to the medics.â
Minho sped over to give the actor a helping hand on steadying you, only to be stopped. âWeâre wasting so much time.â Seungmin clicks his tongue.
Everyone could only watch as Seungmin positioned his arms on your back and behind your knees, hastily pulling you up towards him in a bridal carry and speeding away to the medicâs tent. Minhoâs jaw dropped at his talentâs actions before recovering from the shock and tailing him.
âSeungmin!â
âWhat?â Seungmin responds half-heartedly as he sets you down on the cushioned stretcher, stepping back as the medics do their job.
âYouââ Minho squeaks out. âWhat was that?â
âWhat was what?â
âThat!â He gestured towards you, still unconscious and being checked on by the medics on standby. âDid you just carry Actress Y/N?â
Seungmin ran a frustrated hand through his hair. âAnd what about it? Did I commit a crime or something? I was just helping!â
Minho was conflicted. In all the years he had been working as Seungminâs manager, the actor had never shown this much attention towards his other co-workers, despite maintaining an approachable and friendly image. Of course, that wasnât particularly a bad thingâespecially in an industry where caution towards everyone around you was basic common sense to prevent yourself from going down a road that would lead to your demise. The view was great up where it was high, but the fall was just as immense.
What Minho did acknowledge was your past with Seungmin. Because of that, he was inclined to think more about your friendship with his talent and how that played into your dynamic. Yet, over the course of the two days you two had been filming, he hasnât exactly seen the kind of relationship he was expecting. There were discrepancies in what he knew about you and Seungmin, as well as gaps in the bond his actor painted a picture of. In times like these, there were only a few reasonable explanations that Minho could think of, which made him uneasy.
Something big was coming in the futureâone that he needed to prepare for as early as now.
Hurried footsteps could be heard nearing the tent as Seungmin and Minho diverted their lines of sight towards the entrance, just in time to see a fairly muscular figure come in all frantic. âHow is she?â
Minho immediately recognized the man from a conversation he had in the personal staff area, recalling his introduction as your manager. The former bowed slightly in greeting. âManager Seo Changbin.â Seungmin felt his blood boil after seeing your managerâs late entrance.
âWhere even were you?â He asked coldly, intentionally making his tone sharp. âYou know, for her manager, you sure are practically nowhere to be found during shoots.â
Changbin splutters at the accusation. âY/N doesnât like it when I stay to watch! She says itâs pressuring!â
âSure. But itâs your job to be on standby in the event that she needs you. How come you werenât?â
âIââ
âOkay, thatâs enough.â A new face entered the space, who Seungmin quickly made out to be Assistant Director Lee. The second-in-hand gave him a disapproving look. âActor Kim Seungmin, please stop lashing out at Actress Y/Nâs manager.â
Seungmin felt like he was seconds away from committing arson. âIâm not lashing out if it's a reasonable argument!â
He felt someone grab a hold of him, forcefully pushing him down to sit. It was only then that Seungmin seemed to finally be conscious of how emotionally he had been actingâaccepting Minhoâs foresight on his actions. Assistant Director Lee, on the other hand, did not appreciate his recklessness.
âThat it is, but weâre going to need you to stay calm,â he states. âThe situation is sensitive enough as it is.â
Seungmin felt like he had no choice but to agree. He couldnât risk making an unreasonable scene in such a respected project set, and knowing you, a tension-filled tent wasnât going to be your preferred area of rest. Glancing back at your unconscious figure still being tended to, he let out a sigh to release the extra pressure in his chest.
Just what was he doing right now?
Once Assistant Director Lee saw him calm down a significant amount, he clapped to disperse the heavy silence. âGreat. Now, can someone inform us when she wakes up so we can restart the shoot?â
So much for calming down, because Seungminâs temper flared up again in an instant. âAre you kidding me?â He growled. âNo, we are not proceeding with filming today!â
âActor Kim, we donât have enough timeââ
âIâll pay for all the expenses for the extension and rescheduling of all the remaining shoots. Put all of it under my personal bank account.â
Minhoâs eyes almost popped out of their sockets in shock. âSeungmin, whatââ
âI said what I said,â Seungmin continued. âNow go do it. Both of us wonât step in front of the camera for the rest of the day.â
âYou canât just decide that for Actress Y/N,â Assistant Director Lee reasoned in disbelief.
Unluckily for him, Seungmin had already made up his mindâand when that happens, he isnât one to give up on it.
âThen weâll tell her itâs cancelled because Iâm sure as hell wonât be filming today. You canât make her act out the scenes prepared today without me.â
Assistant Director Lee was conflicted. Taking a day off so suddenly when theyâd already had everything set up was going to be such a wasteâand frankly, Director Han was already on edge about it. Granted, this wasnât the first time heâd come across this situation, and certainly wonât be the last in his time in the industry. Now, an actor telling them that theyâd pay for the cost of their demand? That one was new.
Kim Seungmin was notorious in the field for being a perfectionist, so he honestly came in here expecting him to agree with their plan. Maybe he shouldâve considered the rumors heâd heard around the set that Actor Kim and you were closer than they initially thought. With that, Assistant Director Lee could only sigh. Heâd just have to deal with Director Hanâs displeasure.
Along with being a perfectionist, Kim Seungmin was also incredibly stubborn.
âI understand,â he concedes. âIâll inform Director Han.â
Seungmin tried not to show his surprise on his face. He didnât think heâd actually get this result so easily, but it was welcomed. âThank you.â
âLet us know if you change your mind.â
âI wonât.â
Assistant Director Lee chuckled at Seungminâs firm reply before announcing his leave. The atmosphere in the tent improved as he stepped out, but awkwardness still lingered in the air. Minho dropped down to slump on a plastic chair, leaving Changbin to stand stiffly near him.
âY/N is totally gonna kill you, dude.â Minho groans, completely letting go of formalities in stress.
Seungmin had half the mind to be embarrassed by his choices. âAnd to think Iâm doing this all for her sake,â he scoffs good-naturedly before turning to your manager. âDid something happen before the shoot? She couldnât have passed out like this just because of the heat today.â
Changbin scratches at his neck. âUh, Iâm not sureââ
ââItâs exhaustion,â one of the medics spoke up. âHer body seems to be completely fatigued, as well as slightly dehydrated, but that must be the heatâs contribution. Has she not been getting enough rest?â
They watched as Changbinâs face morphed into shock, completely unsure of how that couldâve even happened. âBut she said she was going to bed early yesterday!â
Your manager was slowly getting on Seungminâs nerves. First, it was his constant absence from the set. Next, it was his blatant disregard for your well-being. The last time he checked, a manager was supposed to be aware of their talentâs condition as much as possible. Any less and it would be neglect.
He narrowed his eyes. âThe picture youâre painting for me is not a good one, Manager Seo.â
âWhat are you implying right now, Actor Kim?â Changbin pounced back, Seungminâs tone stirring negative emotions inside him.
Seungmin refused to back down. âYou know damn well.â
âKim Seungmin!â
âWatch your mouthââ
A rustling noise interrupted the three menâs small disagreement. âUgh,â you groaned in pain. âWhat in the world?â
âY/N!â Seungmin jumps up without a second thought to rush over. In the distance, Minho and Changbinâs eyes meet in mutual speculation.
âSeungmin, sorry, but please shut up.â You raise a hand to cradle your head. âMy head is pounding.â
You could vaguely make up a medic handing Seungmin some pills and a bottle of water, saying something about how you were stable enough to just need rest and hydration. The next thing you knew was feeling a hand gently take your chin to create an opening and a pill being dropped inside, along with a water bottle pressing against your lips. You gulped it down in shock.
âThe fuckââ You coughed. Another hand came up again to wipe some of the water you spilled around your mouth before you pushed it away. âKim Seungmin!â
Your co-star rolled his eyes at your dramatics. âWould it kill you to stop being so fussy?â
âNot when youâre treating me like a child!â
Changbin clears his throat, effectively stopping your bickering. âUhâIâm going to go get us lunch,â he meekly informs you two. âThe medics also already went out to get food earlier, so I think we need to get our share before itâs all gone.â
Minho nods at Changbinâs words a bit too enthusiastically for your liking. âIâll come with him. You two can talk while waiting.â
The two of you watch as your managers dash out of the tent like cartoon characters, raising a suspicious brow at their sudden change in behavior. Seungmin clicked his tongue in annoyance before turning back to you and flicking a finger at your forehead without warning. You squealed at the added pain as Seungminâs suppressed laughter filled the room.
âYou are such an asshole!â You shriek while bringing both hands to shield your forehead belatedly.
âAnd your hair looks like a nest,â he replies with a snicker.
You gave him a glare at his comment, rubbing the sore spot gently. âShit,â you whined, feeling the ache from inside your head again. âI canât believe I fainted. How long was I out? What about the shoot? Are we resuming after lunch?â
The questions you were asking him only served as Seungminâs reminder of his actions earlier, causing his mouth to run dry. Truth be told, even he was unsure of how to tell you everything that happened while you were away in dreamland. He couldnât just drop the ball at you that he made sure that the shoot had been cancelled just for you to have the rest of the day to rest up. At the same time, there was practically no other way to convince you that the cancellation wasnât your fault unless he told you the truth.
But Seungmin had already caused you enough misunderstandings to last a decadeâand he wasnât about to add another one.
âYou werenât out for long,â he told you. âIâm actually surprised you even woke up right away. The shootâs cancelled.â
He watched you pause to let the words sink in. What did he mean by the shootâs been cancelled? Wouldnât that be too costly? After all, you were literally renting a place far away from the city to shoot this movie. A shoot cancellation meant an extension, which also meant new arrangements needed to be made. You curled up into a ball, wanting to evaporate into the clouds at the heat of the sun. How much more were you going to screw up everyoneâs experience with this project?
âIs it because of me?â You muttered.
Seungmin felt something inside him break at how small you made yourself seem. This was exactly what he was trying to avoid, only to once again fail to prevent it. That one was on him, thoughâhe didnât manage to tell you right away that he was the one responsible for the shootâs cancellation. He felt the need to chase away your negative headspace as fast as possible.
âWhy do you always blame yourself first? I cancelled the shoot, so just get some more rest.â He sighs.
Your eyes snap upwards to meet his. He had got to joking. âWhat?â You ask, bewildered at the statement. âAnd they agreed? I can still continue!â
Seungmin immediately acts to lift your legs back up on the stretcher when he sees you trying to get up. He places a heavy hand on your calves to lock them in place before sending you an unamused stare. âLand a single foot out of this stretcher, and Iâll make sure the shoot gets moved to next week.â
âYou canât just do that!â Your mouth gaped open like a fish. âDo you even know how bad the cost is going to be to extend for that long?â
âIâm more than capable of shouldering the expenses.â
That single statement made your stomach drop. âYou cannot be serious,â was your horrified reaction. âSeungmin, did you pay for the extension costs?â
The man before you only shrugged, like he hadnât just dropped significant information. âWhat about it?â You blanched at his unconcerned attitude.
âWhat do you mean, what about it?â You asked, absolutely outraged. âI swear, youâve always been like this! You think you could just play around with everything around you, since you can. Why canât you take things seriously for once?â
It was Seungminâs turn to look offended. âNow, when did I ever do that?â
âThe charity drama!â You cry out. âYeah, I knew all about your little plan back then. If you acted well enough, they wouldnât pay attention to whatever mess I was making, was it? I even overheard you telling your friends you chose me to become the female lead just because you were curious about how I kept advancing levels when I barely met the standardâand there I was foolish enough to believe that you chose me for my skills!â
âIââ Seungmin stammers. âI donât remember that.â
âOf course you wouldnât,â you held back a sob, feeling emotional as you poured out your inner insecurities. âWhy would you? Someone of your caliber could go around bending things to your will, and no one would bat an eye since they would justify it with your talent. Iâm the complete opposite, Seungmin.â
Seungmin was quite alarmed, to say the least. These were your side of the storyâthe side that he never got to acknowledge. He could only watch you try to keep yourself together in front of him, clearly struggling as your emotions ran wild at the release of what seemed to be years of suppressed experiences. His body was screaming at him to move and comfort you in any way he knew how, but for the first time in his life, Seungmin was completely frozen in guilt.
âIâve lived the life below people like you. We were the ones that were always stuck in the shadows, where stepping on us became the norm. People like us were the pieces in your games of chess who couldnât even speak out in the fear of being thrown out.â You inhaled deeply before meeting his gaze. âIt was a life you would never even begin to imagine experiencing at your ability, Seungmin.â
Your words were like spears thrown at Seungminâs heart. They all rang true in his head. He would never understand what you went through because he was part of the problem. Seungmin thought back to his past, trying to recall where it all started.
He was a young child, only ten years old, when he discovered his passion for acting. His class decided to do a play for the school festival, and he got the role of the main character completely by chance through drawing lots. Young Seungmin didnât think of it too much and agreed out of obligation. It wasnât until practices started that he started to take an interest in it after receiving constant praise from his classmates and homeroom teacher. This fascination only bloomed more on the day of the festival, where he found out that performing for people could be this exhilarating.
From then on, Seungmin made it his lifelong dream to become an actor. Seeing his talent in the field, his parents supported him wholeheartedly, eventually leading to them suggesting he join an acting academy to improve. The praises didnât stop even after he joined the academyâin fact, they only doubled in frequency, making Seungmin come to the conclusion that he mustâve been some sort of prodigy. Perhaps it was due to that mindset of his that he paraded around like the world was his. To his defense, none of the adults around him saw the wrong in his behavior and even went as far as encouraging it.
It was when he graduated from the academy and started his work as a professional actor that he got humbled by all the talent around him. Everyone seemed to be on his level or greater, which completely shattered his worldview. During those times in his rookie years, he learned the importance of hard work and how much it could really make a difference. There was one time that he thought to himselfâmaybe this was the reason he felt so attracted to you.
You were the first person he ever associated with the difference that hard work brought. Seungmin first noticed you on the first day of intermediate level. He had gotten to that level first and thus kept an eye out for notable candidates from the beginner level. The thing is, he had never even heard of you or any of your performancesâso it was a complete surprise to see you climb up to intermediate level. From then on, he observed you from afar, never really approaching. To him, you seemed plain; someone who didnât even exude star quality. So eventually, he forgot all about you again.
Until he saw your name on the same paper as his, indicating that both of you would be in the same batch that got promoted to junior level.
The charity drama was another project Seungmin gained an unexpected opportunity from. With the privilege given to him as the top ranker for the year-end evaluations, he chose you as his female lead. All Seungmin wanted was to see what kind of shine you had as an actor, and he was rewarded greatly with your stellar performance after days of painful practices. When you were once again bumped up to senior level right alongside him, he was ecstatic. You had changed since the charity drama, and your aura started to take up more space in their small practice room. Seungmin wanted to get closer to you, but the two of you would only end up clashing every time. He guesses that you and him were just complete opposites in everything, down to your work ethic. He still tried to interact with you in any way he knew how, thoughâwhich led to his friends teasing him about his little crush on you.
Now, he couldnât help but think that maybe they were right.
Seungmin pulled his hand away from your calves, letting his hands fall down on his sides before bowing deeply. âIâm sorry. There would be no excuse for my actions, and itâs even worse that I have no recollection of the details when Iâve obviously affected someone. I know an apology wouldnât erase everything that has already happened, but it would be the start of my attempts to make sure it doesnât happen again. At this point, all I can ask for is your forgiveness.â
You quickly reached out to grasp his arms, trying to pull him up from his act of remorse. âGet upâoh my god. Itâs fine, Seungmin. Really. Iâve already forgiven you yesterday, honestly. My behavior also had some faults towards you, and it was unacceptable.â
âKnowing why now, I think it was more than reasonable.â
You let out a laugh at his words. âYouâre just trying to make me feel better,â you teased. âNow, I think the other crew members also deserve an apology from us.â Seungminâs face paled at the reminder. Just imagining Assistant Director Lee scolding him for his audacity earlier was sending him into early retirement.
âYeah,â he coughs. âBut can we not take back the shoot cancellation? It would be so awkward for me if we did, and you still need the rest.â
âFine, you big baby.â You pinched his cheek after seeing his childish pout. Seungmin was quick to swat your hand away, despite the burning sensation he could feel heating up his ears. âSo does this mean weâre friends?â
Even if he could feel a crack form in his heart from your innocent words, Seungmin refused to show it.
âSure. Friends.â
06 : SIX.
Being friends with Seungmin was odd.
Granted, you already got a taste of what that felt like for the two days that flew by since you two decided on a truce. However, you didnât really feel much of a change in your dynamic in those two daysânot until things took a turn after your conversation in the medic tent.
After your little heart-to-heart session, Seungmin had begun acting strangely. And by strangely, you meant becoming a complete one-eighty from the Kim Seungmin you were used to. It was almost like he was replaced by a softer, more warm-hearted version of himself. In one talk, you were suddenly subject to his endless affection, albeit still exhibiting the Kim Seungmin flare that you were comfortable with. Overall, it was just weird to think that four days ago, the two of you were fighting like cats and dogs. Now, you watched him bounce up and down as he gave himself a pep talk to prepare for the kissing scene.
âAre you that nervous?â
Seungmin flinches at your question, seemingly not expecting your voice to enter his head while he was seconds away from a meltdown. Your co-star looks at you sheepishly. âIs that bad? This is driving me insane.â
That was another thing different about Seungmin after the medic tent incident. He acted a lot more endearingly in your eyes. You faintly recall a comment you made a few days ago about how Seungmin would never be akin to a small bird who deserved to be doted on. But seeing the Seungmin in front of you right now, you might just take back your words.
Kim Seungmin had a lot more layers than you thoughtâand you found yourself wanting to uncover them all.
âIâm sure this isnât your first kiss on camera,â you snort. âJust go do it like you usually do. Act like how your character would act in the moment. You have my whole consent, anyway.â
Seungmin wanted to tell you how much you didnât understand his dilemma right now. In all fairness, even he was somewhat unsure of what was happening to him the past few days. All he did know was that he was right in what he thought during the first day of filmingâhe really did feel like he was turning younger in front of you.
It was almost embarrassing how easily he slipped into that carefree attitude around you, especially after your conversation in the medic tent. He was doing so well up until then, so what happened? Seungmin couldnât be more curious about his own actions. He did have an inkling of what it was, but he needed more proof to act on it. Seungmin couldnât risk becoming more of an idiot in your eyes. You already had too much of that experience with him during your filming yesterday, which was the rescheduled shoot of the one he demanded to pause.
That also meant that this was the last day you two had on set together before everyone packed their bags and headed back to the city. After that, it would be just him again on set to film the movieâs first scenes of his character.
Seungmin wasnât disappointed. He totally wasnât.
âWhat are you going to do if I lose control and give into my character, huh?â He argues. You stopped reading your script to give him an unamused stare.
âSeriously?â You scoffed. âIf you really must know, then I wouldnât do anything. If thatâs what the male lead feels, then the female lead just needs to reciprocate if theyâre really in love with each other. As their actors, we need to deliver those same emotions.â
You didnât get what was making Seungmin so on edge about the scene. Reviewing his past works, this certainly wouldnât be his first on-screen kiss, nor was it his first romance project as the male lead. What made you so different from his other co-stars that was making him act like a rookie?
âIf anything, I should be more nervous than you. This is actually my first kiss scene!â
âThatâs just even worse!â Seungmin whines, burying his face in his hands. âThis is gonna be terrible.â
It was then that you finally had an idea as to why Seungmin looked like he was having a mid-life crisis this early in his life.
You felt a grin creep up on your face and paste itself there. âDid you want this to be a good memory for me?â
Seungmin groans at your poking. âStop teasing me! So what if I do? Did I commit a crime, huh?â
âThe crime of stealing my heart, yes.â
âYouâre insufferable.â
âThank you,â you laugh. âI try my best.â
Seungmin mutters something beneath his breathâsomething you couldnât hear because of Director Han calling for the two of you. He watched as you skipped away, leaving him to follow in your footsteps. Seungmin smiled at the picture painted in front of him.
âI know.â
You stopped at your designated place in front of the camera, turning back to look at Seungmin beside you, who was already sweating bullets. Your hand unconsciously lifts up to wipe them off, which startles the both of you. Seungmin opens his mouth to say something but was cut off by Director Hanâs loud voice.
âAlright!â He claps. âThis is our last scene for the day before we call it a wrap! Iâm sure you two already know what it is, so all Iâll say is don't think too much about this. Enjoy it, or whatever you want to doâas long as it looks natural. Sounds good?â The two of you nod at him.
âOkay, camera starts at three,â he says, motioning towards D.O.P. Bang. âTwo, one. Action!â
You took the opportunity to appreciate the scenery around you as the camera started rolling. The scene was set on a hill with a breathtaking view of the rest of the town. Hues of orange and pink start to tint the surroundings as the sun sets in the background. It was nothing less than ethereal, and you almost envied the female lead for having this moment in her life.
âIâve always wanted to take someone here,â Seungmin says, reciting his lines. âWhen I was younger, I told myself that I was going to bring my true love here and propose. It was unfortunate that I moved awayâthis was my favorite spot in the whole world.â
You let yourself completely immerse in the situation. âPropose, huh? Iâm sure the lucky person would love it up here. Itâs so serene, like it's taking away all your stress just by being here.â
Seungmin gently grabs your hand into his, making you turn to meet his eyes. You almost gasped out of character after seeing the immense amount of love swirling in his gaze. Love looked great on him, you pointed out in your head. One day, Seungmin was going to look at someone else with the same gazeâsomeone that he loved with all his heart. A tinge of hot green jealousy burned in your stomach at the thought.
Part of you yearned for someone to look at you even just a fourth of the way Seungmin portrayed the male leadâs longing for the female lead. But for now, you had a role to fulfill. You could just lock these feelings up for later.
âDo you?â He asks. Your breath hitches at his question. âIâm not proposingâwell, not yet. But I brought you here for a similar reason.â
Seungmin reaches for your other hand, now holding both of them. âI love you so much. I know our time together hasnât been the longest, but it seems like my heart has found its way back home. Honestly, I first thought that it was just because I was back in town, but eventually I realized that I felt at home with you too.â He caresses your knuckles with his thumbs. âMaybe my heart knew where it belonged long before I did. I loved you back then, just like I love you now.â
You couldnât help but genuinely tear up at Seungminâs monologue. It was such a beautiful feeling to be loved, and you hoped that someday you could experience the same kind of love you acted with. âSo, Iâll ask you this question,â Seungmin continued.
âWill you be mine?â
âYes,â you sobbed out.
Seungmin lifts his hands to cup your crying face, bringing you closer to his own. The moment your lips connected felt so magical that you ended up leaning in more, savoring the moment with your fluttering heart. Seungmin reciprocates the act, kissing you with more emotion than he did just a second ago. His lips felt like smooth pillows, coaxing you to release all the tension you had left and restâwith him. Seungmin was being careful yet passionate at the same time, leaving you to drown in the sheer magnitude of the butterflies.
You couldnât help but love every passing second that you were lost on his lips.
When you two pulled away due to the lack of air, he kept his forehead to yours, noses touching. The soft sound of both your laughter filled the surrounding area.
âCut! Thatâs a wrap for today!â You hear everyone start cheering at Director Hanâs words. Seungmin chuckles at them as he slowly steps back, missing the way your body followed after his warmth.
âCongratulations,â he says gently. You felt your heart skip a beat. âYour first on-screen kiss, done. How did I do?â
Oh, this was going to be dangerous for your heart.
07 : SEVEN.
Thereâs been an empty feeling in your heart since yesterday that you were trying to ignore.
It was currently the day after you returned to the city. You watched the bustling streets of urban life filter through the carâs tinted windows while Changbin continued to drive you back home after a busy day in the company. Something you had never expected to happen was getting attached to the small countryside town you filmed in enough to miss it like this.
You felt it when you stepped out of the car yesterday to head back to your apartmentâthe polished concrete floors of the parking building suddenly felt foreign to you. The abundance of luxury cars was evident in the space, reminding you that you were once again in the city. It felt almost cold and lonely with the way you couldnât see the hills you got used to seeing all day long. But it would do, you think to yourself.
The city could also be warm if you wanted it to be.
âOh? I think theyâre filming the first scenes of the movie in a building around here,â Changbin pointed out from the driverâs seat. âMinho mentioned this street a day ago.â
You raised a brow at his words. âSince when did you and Seungminâs manager get so close?â
âEver since you and his talent did,â Changbin snickers.
Heat rose to your face at your managerâs teasing. It was no secret to anyone who witnessed the movieâs shoot that you and Seungmin got extremely close after the fainting incident. You were sure that his efforts to stop the filming from continuing that day was also the talk of the town with the crew members. After all, who would go so far as to pay for rescheduling costs for their co-star? Sure, you and Seungmin were friends, but the two of you were barely talking in the first few days of the project. Anyone in their right mind would find his actions out of the blueâjust like you did too.
Maybe it was just Seungminâs way of making up for all the things you both went through. At first, it made you mad at how he flaunted his blatant disregard for the people affected by his decisions. The image of younger Seungmin came to mind, triggering the part of you that still held a slight resentment for what he did before. However, you found yourself slowly changing your mind as you two apologized to the crew members for the sudden decision, promising them swift and quality scenes the next day. As Seungmin walked you back to your innâs room, you couldnât help but feel a tinge of happiness bubble in your stomach at the thought of someone caring enough to do this for you.
You watched as the evident signs of a film crew appeared in the distance, right in front of an office building. The same tents youâve come to familiarize yourself with stood strong, indicating that this was indeed filming the same movie you were working on. It was already early in the evening, so they should be wrapping up any time soon. Should you stop by and say hello?
âDo you want to stop by and visit? You donât have any schedules left for the rest of the evening,â Changbin suggests, getting ready to park near the building if you give confirmation.
Maybe you could repay Seungmin for his support over the past few days by visiting him. You smile at the thought of catching him off-guard.
âSure, why not?â
The summer air of June was starting to make itself present despite already cooling significantly due to the sun saying its goodbyes an hour or two ago. Bright lights scattered across the vast street, a mixture of car lights, building lights, and streetlights morphing into the familiar image of a city that everyone knew. You walked towards the set peacefully, effectively going under the radar with a black mask covering your face. It was just a few steps more until you reached the barricade, when a familiar voice called out your name.
âY/N?â Eunha squinted her eyes to determine if it really was you, only for you to watch them widen in surprise when her conclusion was proven correct. âOh, it is you!â
You waved as you got closer. âHi, Eunha. I saw you guys while passing by and thought Iâd give you a visit,â you say shyly. Eunha beamed at your explanation.
âThatâs so sweet of you; youâre always welcomed here!â She gives you a hug, quickly separating to drag you over the barricade. âCome on, Iâll show you to the others.â
Witnessing the set as a visitor was interesting. Despite the multiple people that greeted you on the way, it still felt as if you were an outsider with a V.I.P. pass to tour the set. Normally, you would be somewhere near the center, where the main scene was going to be shot. So staying back and watching the other crew members do their own things on the outskirts of that area was a new experience. In a way, you felt giddy like a child on a field trip.
âActress Y/N is here!â
Eunhaâs ecstatic voice traveled throughout the main area of the set, catching the attention of the directors, who had a figure you knew all too well standing right beside them. His eyes snapped up from the monitor D.O.P. Bang was showing him, eyes searching around for yours. Once he caught sight of your face, his eyes lit up.
âY/N?â
If anyone asks, you totally werenât checking him out. The clean black office suit he was wearing was incredibly flattering on his features, along with the formal brush-up the hairstylists put his hair in. You had only seen him with his hair down for the past few daysâwith his character supposedly portraying the look of someone who was comfortably back home to rest. And while that Seungmin was also objectively handsome, the way his hair was framing his face right now was stirring something more inside of you. Swallowing the feeling away, you straightened yourself.
âHi, Seungmin.â You laughed. âMissed me?â
Seungmin abandoned his post with the directors and sped towards you. âWhy are you here? Itâs getting late,â he says, worried. Seungmin lets his eyes wander behind you for a second before a frown finds its way to his face. âAnd whereâs that damned manager of yours?â You sighed at his obvious complaint.
âWhen are you going to let down on Changbin?â You say, unamused. âI swear, he means well. I came from the company, so heâs guarding the car since itâs just on hazard.â
âStillââ Seungmin tries to argue, only to be cut off by you waving your finger like he had been a bad child.
âStop that. We talked about your coddling.â
He clicks his tongue in disapproval. âMaybe Iâd stop once you actually learn how to take care of yourself.â
A series of claps interrupted the conversation you two were having. âOkay, break it up, lovebirds,â Minho says while inserting himself between you two. âItâs so nice to see you again, Actress Y/N. But we have a crew celebration dinner to attend, so Iâll borrow Seungmin first over here.â
Your co-star resists his manager, staying firmly on spot to prove a point. âWait, Iâll walk her back to her car first.â Minho gave him an odd look.
âWhat do you mean walk her back?â He questions. âSheâs attending. You just need to get changed out of that suit.â It was your turn to look confused.
âHuh?â
That was how you suddenly found yourself sitting at a long barbecue restaurant table with the other female crew members, silently listening to their energetic conversations while downing as much meat as you could. You didnât know if this was a curse or a blessing in disguise, but you would surely regret it if you didnât make the most of what was handed to you. Free food is still free food, even if it was a sponteneous invitation from the directors.
âIâm so happy we finished filming!â The woman assigned to your makeup, Yerin, said aloud. âNow it's those computer bastardsâ turn to slave away.â
You couldnât help but feel guilty for a portion of her hardships. âOnce again, I apologize for all the trouble I caused you on set.â You slightly bowed while still sitting. âHopefully, it will be better the next time we get to work together.â Yerin only waved off your apology.
âOh, pleaseâdonât be such a worrywart! Having you on set was a delight,â she squeals. âPlus, we had a blast seeing the development between you and Actor Kim Seungmin.â Eunhaâs face quickly turned into one of horror.
âYerin!â
You paled at her words. âIâm sorry, what?â
What did she mean by that? The inside of your mind turned into a battlefield at Yerinâs implication. Your eyes immediately turned to search for Changbin, feeling the need to inform him of a possible issue in the near future. In your experience in the industry, scandals always started like this. You didnât want this to affect Seungminâs career negatively, so it was always better to prepare early than late.
âDonât listen to her, Y/N,â Eunha frantically says, trying to get a hold of her co-worker. âSheâs just drunk.â
Yerin pushed her hands away, albeit weakly. âEunha, stop being such a party pooper,â she whines. âWe all know theyâre dating now. Oh, our crew has tight lips, though! We wonât sell you guys or something.â That didnât ease the panic that had already formed in your stomach.
âWeâre not dating.â
You could only watch as Yerinâs showed genuine shock at your revelation. âWait, for real?â She gasps. âThatâs too bad. You two look great together!â
âYerin, seriously!â
âSorry, Iâll just go get some fresh air.â You excused yourself as politely as you could before standing up to head out the front door.
The now-cooled air pricked at your skin, making you breathe a bit more easily than in the humid interior of the restaurant. You lowered yourself to the narrow roadâs curbside, choosing to sit down and admire the quiet neighborhoodâs lights. It felt a lot better out here than inside, making you feel guilty for not enjoying the celebration more than you should have as one of the main characters for the project.
If you had refused, it wouldâve been a bad look. You didnât have a schedule for the night to use as a reason, and lying to the people who gave you the opportunity to work on your biggest project yet was out of the question. At the same time, you think of what you wouldâve been doing instead if you had said no to their dinner offer. Laying down in your apartment while eating takeout wasnât such a bad scene. The sliding of the aged wooden door brought you out of your thoughts.
âSee? Just what I said,â a monotonous voice pointed out. âNo self-preservation skills whatsoever.â
You rolled your eyes at the comment. âItâs just the outside of a family-owned barbecue establishment, Seungmin. Thereâs practically no one out here at this time.â
âDoes that not make it worse?â He gave you a look of disapproval, crouching down slowly to join you on the curbside. âYou have a knack for making people worry, do you?â
âThen stop worrying!â You snappedâhis words reminding you of the situation you had just fled from to find peace.
Seungmin raised his hands in surrender. âWoah,â he exclaims. âAlright, something is clearly wrong. Talk to me.â
You could only turn away, feeling yourself unable to face him. It was an awkward subject to bring up, and you told yourself that Yerin had already promised that the crew was tight-lipped. Objectively, there was nothing more left for you to worry about. Subjectively, the implication bothered you. Seungmin furrowed his eyebrows at your reaction.
âHey,â he calls out softly. âDid someone say something to you back there? You know I can beat them up, right?â
You grimaced at his attempts to comfort you. âYouâre so violent,â you frowned. âWhat if it was a woman?â
âOh, then Iâm out of that. Sorry.â
âSo full of shit, thatâs what you are.â
Seungmin chuckled. âAnd that I am,â he replies, amused. âBut seriously, Iâm all ears if you want.â
A bitter taste announced its presence on your tongue, your mind forming a whirlpool of thoughts once again. âWhy? Since weâre friends?â You spat out.
The space around you turned silent with Seungminâs lack of response. You fought the urge to give him a discrete glance, just to see the damage you created. It took a few more seconds of the evening breeze being the only one talking between you two before Seungmin eventually spoke up.
âIâll let you in on a secret,â he says in a low voice while running a hand through his hair to pull it back. His hairstyle from earlier was long gone, leaving you to wonder how he got rid of the hairspray so easily. âI actually donât like that weâre friends.â
He watched as you deflated rapidly at his confession.
âNot in that way!â Seungmin splutters. âItâs just that Iâugh.â He brought up a palm to rub across his face.
Now, you were lost. The path of where the conversation was going became lost to you, making you stand in uncharted territory. Seungmin stayed silent for a few more seconds, trying to collect his thoughts. You let him have the time.
âYou might curse at me for this or even put a distance between ourselves. But since this is our last day seeing each other on set until the movieâs release, Iâll take the chance now before I end up regretting I didnât.â
âSeungmin, whatââ
âThe thought of staying just friends with you has been bothering me for a while now. It was like I was subjecting myself to my own personalized torture, where I couldnât get away even if I tried. Iâm still not sure what this entirely means for meâfor us, but what I know is that platonic would never satisfy me at this rate.â He purses his lips, contemplating how to continue.
Eventually, Seungmin raised his head slightly to meet your eyes. âItâs odd. Admittedly, Iâve had my fair share of romantic relationships in the past, yet none of them could compare to what I was feeling now. At first, I thought it was just an obsession with you. Something that stemmed from my previous interest in you back at our senior level of academyââ
âYou had a what?â
âI know,â he laughs humorlessly. âMy friends used to tease me that I had a crush; that was why I was bothering you so much. Back then, I just brushed them off as jokes, telling them I only saw you as a rival. Well, look where that ended up.â
You were frozen in shock at his confession. âSeungmin,â you start. âI donât know what to say.â He shakes his head.
âYou donât have to. Just let me have this moment to pour everything out,â he says. âY/N, to put it into words, I feel at ease when Iâm with you. At the same time, it always felt as if I was constantly worried about when it would end. That I would be left on my own again once you had finished your business with me. I tried to reason with myself, to put an acceptable distance between us in the case that what I had wasnât the best for you. But I couldnât do it, Y/N. Every time your voice entered my ears, it was like becoming a child. Unable to control their emotions and doing things without a second thought just because it felt like the right thing to do at the moment.â Seungmin looks up to the sky.
âThat kiss we hadâI think it was the happiest Iâve been in a while. It might have been just a job to you, because you could say it really was, but for me, it was finally a chance to express everything I had been holding back for the past few days. All I want you to remember is that nothing from that act was faked,â he exhales. âI really donât think this is something you feel for a friend, soââ
âLetâs see where this takes us.â
ââWhat?â
âIâm not sure how you expect me to top what you just told me, but Iâll try with my own words.â You teased him with a genuine smile. âSeungmin, I feel strikingly similar to what you feel about me. Just maybe not as intensely yet.â
You let yourself move at the need to cup his face as he continues to look at you in shock. âIâm sure you already know that I spent quite a long time hating your guts, so the fact that I even started to feel an attraction towards you was shocking, to say the least. I was never one to believe in fictional tropes, despite my lifelong yearning to experience a love like that even once. As an actor, Iâve made a career out of acting those scenes out for people to see. But also as an actor, I knew more than anyone else how much real life would never be able to compare to the scripts Iâve seen brought to life on set. They were methodological, a feeling so carefully put together to achieve its maximum potentialâreal life isnât like that.â You inhale deeply.
âThings happen for no reason, like they donât for no reason either. And in a way, I felt both with you.â Your hands lowered themselves towards his hands to hold them tightly. âEnemies-to-lovers? It was laughable at first, but as the days went on, everything just fell into place as if it always belonged there. You feel like a child in front of me? I feel like Iâve never felt warmth in my entire life until you came along. When I first got out of the car yesterday, it was only then that I described urban life as cold and lonely in my entire life. I thought that maybe it was because I got too attached to the homey feel of the countryside that everything Iâve ever known somehow became foreign in a few days. But maybe it was just because of you.â
You found yourself giggling at the dumbfounded look he still had on his face, mind slow to take in what was happening in front of him. âWhat Iâm saying is that I would love to see where this takes us. Right now, you canât expect me to fall in love all of a sudden, especially considering our past. Though if you try hard enough, perhaps that might be just around the corner. What do you say?â Seungmin finally broke free from his trance, eyes watering.
âIâll show you hard work that youâve never seen before in your life.â
âAnd I believe it.â You pinch his cheek before standing up. âNow, letâs go back inside? The party is still ongoing.â
Seungmin clumsily follows, calling out just in time before you opened the door. âWaitâI still donât have your number.â You gave him an astounded stare.
âSeriously?â You breathe out. âWe went through all that, and we still donât have each otherâs numbers?â
Seungmin voices out his offense. âWell, Iâm sorry that I was missing all my shots!â
âSo, does that mean youâre gonna take a shot now, loverboy?â
âFor you, yes.â

Madhubala (Mughal-e-Azam, Barsaat Ki Raat, Mr. & Mrs. '55)âThe Venus of India; heart-throb of all who saw her; responsible for the sexual awakening of every single desi lesbian I know (including me!) And my god, she is breathtakingly beautiful. Look at the subtle grace with which she moves, and that smile - the kind of radiant smile that can make you laugh with sheer delight, or cry because of its hidden pain. Those wild curls! That Cupid's bow! The way she tilts back her head and smiles at you with mischief dancing in her eyes! She has a way of looking at the camera that makes you feel she's sharing a private joke just with you; it's something about that quizzical twist of the lips and eyebrows. As an actress, she is inimitable; she seems to effortlessly inhabit roles ranging from a heart-broken courtesan to a laughter-loving socialite. Fun fact : she's had quite the fan following in Greece! Stelios Kazantidis even wrote a song as a tribute to her.
Ingrid Bergman (Gaslight, Casablanca, Notorious)âWhere do I even begin with Ingrid Bergman? I fell in love with her with her astounding performance in the 1956 version of Anastasia -- the best Anastasia movie in large part due to her wonderful and touching performance. She's got this amazing, fascinating intensity to her in whatever role she's in. She commits 100%, and she's got this light in whatever she's in that's stunning. She's utterly convincing no matter what she plays, from an amnesiac possible lost princess, from a nun, from a woman taking her revenge on the town that wronged her, to light romantic comedy. She's never missed in any role I've seen her in! Also she became quite the MILF.
This is round 5 of the tournament. All other polls in this bracket can be found here. Please reblog with further support of your beloved hot sexy vintage woman.
[additional propaganda submitted under the cut.]
Madhubala:
An icon of Bollywood, who was well known for her beauty and has continued to inspire performances and songs into the 21st century. She was at times described as "the number one beauty of the Indian screen" and "the biggest star in the world".
SHE IS EVERYTHING AHHH. JUST LOOK AT HER SMILE-
She's been nicknamed the Marilyn Monroe of India and was one of the highest paid actresses in the Hindi film industry (the term Bollywood did not exist yet) during the 1950s. Also an extremely talented dancer and singer
SHE'S JUST SO STUNNING, like seeing her eyes IMMEDIATELY CAPTIVATES YOU, THE DANCING, THE BEAUTY!!!!!!!!! She worked in Bollywood for over 20 years and passed away at a sad early age of 36, BUT THE IMPACT SHE HAD WAS UNMATCHED!!!!!
That sassy sideways glance she does always has me WEAK AT THE KNEES. And when she's making silly faces at the camera to mimic someone ahhhh my gay little heart <3
Ingrid Bergman:
God, she's fantastic. She's both beautiful and a compelling actor who's more than capable of putting the whole movie on her shoulders if necessary. It's worth noting that while her beauty is conventional, she was seen as refreshingly "natural" with more eyebrows and less makeup than many other leading ladies of the time. She's well known for her role in Casablanca, but in Notorious, Spellbound, (both available on archive.org ) and Gaslight (1944) she shows how immensely capable she is.
I mean...she's Ingrid Bergman. I feel like that should be enough, you know? She's physically beautiful (her eyes!) but watching her is like a transcendent experience. Her voice, her expressions... beautiful woman, beautiful actor.
I'm a gay man but even I understand her appeal. I'll watch any movie she shows up in. Gorgeous woman.
Just try and watch her movies without sighing wistfully, then get back to me!
Choosing 1-3 movies where Bergman was at her hottest was agony because, of course, she was always at her hottest. Not just because she was beautiful but because she was absolutely willing to go up against the bs women in Hollywood were constantly dealing with. When exiled from Hollywood for having an affair with Roberto Rossellini, not only did she refuse to apologize at any point, but she went on to say that Hollywood's films had grown stagnant and boring to her. Though she said she appreciated her time working there, she wanted to try new, different techniques (hence starring in Italian neorealist films, working on stage, and acting under directors like Ingmar Bergman). She was not afraid to chase after her artistic ideals and go outside the box regardless of what society had to say about it. From her first movie to her last she killed it. There's so much more to say about Bergman's career and life, but I've already written five million words so I'll stop at that.
ion words so I'll stop at that.
One of the most incredible actors I've ever seen on film. Her facial expressions are so intricate and poignant that I cannot look away. I'm either ace or straight, but damn she made me question that.
SEVEN TIME OSCAR NOMINEE QUEEN. Girl also PULLED, having affairs with famously hot men Gary Cooper and Gregory Peck IN ADDITION to her three marriages...sexy
She has a very natural beauty to her, and she's from Sweden!
She left Hollywood and only became more beautiful. You could drown in her eyes. She can look innocent AND like she's seen it all. She is effortlessly elegant. She's played Joan of Arc (automatically hot) AND was in the movie that coined gaslight as a term. And where would we be without that!
She was known for being a breath of fresh air on the movie scene at the time with her windswept hair, dreamy smile and soulful eyes. I have loved her in every movie I have seen her in - she was just magnetic!
Where do I even start. There's a neighborly quality to this beautiful, talented actress that makes her hotness one of a kind and her looks impossible to forget
With a career spanning five decades, Bergman is often regarded as one of the most influential screen figures in cinematic history. Known for her naturally luminous beauty, Bergman spoke five languages â Swedish, English, German, Italian and French â and acted in each.
She's hot, don't get me wrong, but I've always found her very approachable, like she could easily be a member of my friend group
A lot of the time hotness in a movie is just about words and framing. "You're the most beautiful person here" [vaseline lens] well I sure hope so because that's who you cast. But when, in Casablanca, they call Ingrid Bergman the most beautiful woman in the world... they were not fucking lying. And such a dynamite actor too!! I'd only seen Casablanca up until last year, and there she's confined to love interest. But in Gaslight she was maybe one of the most incredible actors I've ever seen!!!! Goddddd shes so fucking hot and cool.

what are your favourite catalan movies?
I'm going to be very mainstream here but I loved Casa en flames (A House On Fire) so much. I think it's the best movie I've seen this year 2024 (not best Catalan movie, I meant best movie of any nationality). Btw, this movie is now available on Netflix with English subtitles! It's a comedy-drama about a family that meets in their holiday home before selling it and all the problems and secrets are brought up, revealing the character's insecurities. It's very well written and shows again how Emma Vilarasau is such an amazing actress.
Another movie I absolutely adored was El mestre que va prometre el mar (The Teacher Who Promised the Sea). I doubted on including this one as Catalan movie or not because it's a Catalan production with a Catalan actor as main character representing a real Catalan man, but the movie is mostly in Spanish since most of the events take part in Spain and not in Catalonia, but I think it still counts. Either way, it's a beautiful movie and definitely my favourite movie of 2023. It's explained from the view of a woman who wants to find out what happened to her grandfather's family and ends up visiting a mass grave being dug up in central Spain (context note: the state of Spain is the 2nd country in the world âafter Cambodiaâ with a highest number of disappeared people because of all the people in mass graves during the civil war and the early years of the dictatorship, thousands of families are still looking for their relatives). It leads her to uncover the real story of Antoni Benaiges, a teacher from Catalonia who was sent to teach in the landlocked Spanish countryside in the early 1930s (pre-Civil War). It's a very heartwarming antifascist story about what a teacher can be, about children's freedom, and a reminder of the importance of historical memory. I really recommend everyone to watch it. (The movie can be streamed in Movistar+ and rented in many other international platforms.)
Other Catalan movies that I liked a lot are La Vampira de Barcelona and Salvador.
La Vampira de Barcelona (The Barcelona Vampiress) (2020) is a thriller with drama and some horror based on the real story of a woman who lived in Raval (poor quarter in Barcelona) who was accused of being a serial killer kidnapping children to use their blood in the early 1900s. I really liked this movie because I think we've all heard the legend but here the filmmakers went for a more historically-accurate version of what happened and how she was used, with a strong social critique, so it was a very interesting take on the story. It talks about very heavy topics though including children kidnapped to be forced to prostitution. (It looks like in some countries it's on Prime Video but I don't know what subtitles or dubbing it has been.)
Salvador (2006) is a biopic showing the events that led the 25-year-old Catalan anarchist Salvador Puig Antich to be sentenced to death in 1974. It's been years since I watched it now, but I remember when I saw it as a teenager it impacted me greatly even though I already knew the story. (The whole movie is on YouTube but without English subtitles, for streaming platforms it's on Filmin but it looks like it doesn't have English subtitles either, but there are downloadable subtitles online.)

This Week in BL - Boyfriend Era is a Go
Organized, in each category, with ones I'm enjoying most at the top.
NOV 2024 Week 2
Ongoing Series - Thai
Jack & Joker (Thai Mon IQIYI) ep 9 of 12 - I have to say it, the heist stuff is stupid and all the sidekicks are idiots to the point of annoyance. But Yin and War are truly stellar at these parts. And in general in these roles. Canât knock 'em. Itâs been a year of some very good kisses and this has to have been the best. So this show is top of the standings this week for that kiss alone. Like srs boys? I mean to say, BOYS! How dare. Breaking the internet like that.
Honestly, let's be clear, these two have had killer chemistry since the En of Love and we all expected great things. And now, here we sit, suffering great things from these kings. Thank you, Sirs, may we have another?
Love Sick 2024 (Thai Sun iQIYI) ep 8 of 15 - I'm chronicling my experience with 2024 as compared to 2014 here. The Per Win story arc never interested me in 2014 and Iâm not enjoying it now either. But Mick and Ohm are better in 2024. Nong Mick is a standout character, and a brilliant glow up in this version and heâs a confident little shit (affectionate). The mains are good too, but Phun and Noh always were great characters, and these actors are quite good. Possibly better than the original.Â
Kidnap (Fri YT) ep 10 of 12 - More bf era delightful diabetes. They are the best boyfriends and the cutest family in the entire world. No exceptions. Next week is definitely doom tho.Â
Every You Every Me (Thai Mon Gaga) ep 5 of 10 - Talk about making consent and communication sexy! *fans self* Whoah! That was unexpectedly great. The blatancy of the lust in this one was fun too. And the general casual switch nature of the relationship = delightful.
I like the little acting course we're getting from these tw. They are both quite good. Iâm not sure I really enjoy the stories that theyâre telling, but I do like how they are telling them.
Fourever You (Thai Thurs YT) ep 6 of 16 - Hill is the premier torch carrier of this year. My goodness. He sure nursed that crush. While I really like this main couple, Iâm happy to have some of the others start to creep into the narrative at this juncture. Alone HillTer are a bit intentionally miscommunicative and saccharine. But the screen-time distribution amongst couples seems a little strange. That said, couple 2? No thank you. I really don't like North as a character at all. I find him incredibly unappealing. Ordinarily I'd be on his side because....... blackmail trope renders Johan automatically a complete arse. But at least this is 2 unlikable characters being jerks to each other?
Perfect 10 Liners (Thai Sun YouTube?) ep 2 of 24 - Say it with me Thailand: negging is NOT romantic. Frankly, Arc is just an asshole and a bully with anger issues. ButâŠâŠ Yay cute sides! PondSand they funny. (Book, to me = never very funny. I donât think comedy is his bailiwick. Look, comedy is HARD yaâll and usually not in that way.)Â
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
Our Youth AKA Miseinen: Mijukuna Oretachi wa Bukiyo ni Shinkochu (Japan Tues Gaga) ep 1 of 11 - Theyâre doing some interesting stuff with the framing (both filming style and narrative) that makes this extremely old-fashioned feeling (like Takumi-kun level). I keep saying that this year, but it feels like BL is doing a lot of rediscovering its roots right now. This one even had a goldfish. And abuse. (The two, oddly, often go hand-in-hand in JBL ) And overall...... itâs a bit weird. Which I donât mind from Japan. Japanese BL can get weird in a good way. Oh I like it. Bully meats smart loaner, total opposites attract, both are lonely and broken and NEED each other, and all that.
See Your Love (Taiwan Weds Gaga) ep 4 of 13 - Oh dear, our poor little rich boy is very broken indeed. The sides are utterly ridiculous.
My Damn Business (Korea Sat YT) eps 6 of 7 - I donât normally like a love triangle, but I kind of like this one since it gave our uke a bit more depth and agency. And charm, quite frankly. So far heâs been a very dower character.
Eccentric Romance (Korea Weds Viki) eps 9-10 of 12 - Okay boyfriend era is a go. Goodness but they sure are adorable.Â
Teenager Judge (Vietnam Sat YT) ep 7 of ? - The slow burn is really very slow. To the point of frustration. But I'm still enjoying the show, just not as much as I was.
Love is Like a Poison AKA Doku Koi: Doku mo Sugireba Koi to Naru (Japan Tues Netflix?) 8 of 10 eps - Even Japan is going through a bf era rn I see. How unusual.
Love in the Air: Koi no Yokan (Japan Sat Gaga) ep 2 of 10 - Iâm slightly less annoyed by this one than the original (but I was VERY annoyed by that). I think mame is being tempered by a few things:
Thereâs so much less time spent on the back-and-forth, because this is a much shorter show, so I have less time to be frustrated by it and the utter uselessness of 75% of these characters.
Also, there's that innate Japanese awkwardness of portrayal & social interaction, which makes the unpleasantness of the characters' behavior and touch more understandable.
This, in turn, is married to the natural kink factor of JBL.
Thereâs a clearer Dom sub from the get go with this version, makes the blackmailing a little bit more tolerable because it's clearly Play. (negotiated or not) Simply put, daddy wants his brat to beg. And honestly? So say we all.
On a completely different note, the wardrobe for this show is terrible. Like truly bad BAD.
Blue Canvas of Youthful Days (China Sun iQIYI) eps 3-4 - Well I guess thatâs that disability dealt with. Meanwhile, competitive bullying art students? I am very amused. Zoo date was cute. This is unquestionably a BL (Iâm even more scared now). Still, the gay boys dealing with the straight dudeâs crush was truly hilarious. So much "our gay drama doesnât have time for your het bullshit."Â Classy move, I smell some Taiwan in this show.
Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo (Korea Thurs Gaga) eps 4-8 end - I was reliably informed this has an HFN end so I decided to watch. Noble and self sacrificing with both of them taking the blame.
My thoughts are...... mixed.
High school student Do Hoe lives with his brutal father who runs a Taekwondo gym. When cheerful Ju Young arrives to train, they fall in love. An unexpected incident forces them apart, they reunite over a decade years later. Essentially this is a brilliant narrative about finding love at the worst possible time, surviving chronic abuse, and the way we process mental, emotional, and physical trauma overtime. Yes itâs also a romance, but thatâs not primarily what this story is actually about. I can recognize its genius, but this type of narrative is not for me. Iâm reminded of bittersweet painful shows like To My Star 2, or The On1y One, or even Not Me. Is this BL tangential or is it some other genre entirely? Am I questioning my own taste because I did not like its content, or because I do not like its genre? And if itâs not BL should I even render judgment? I think I have to lean into the way I approached some of those other shows, which is to say: it is not for me but I recognize that it is of an extremely high-quality that is certainly for someone else.
Recommended, but only if you like masochistic cinema. Under those circumstances 9/10
(but know that if i were rating for my personal taste? 7/10 Iâm never re-watching this, and there is a small part of me that wishes I never had)Â
It's airing but......
Love for Loves Sake got some kind of special supposed to air 11/9. Not sure what, why, or where. Only the rumor that it...... is. I'll believe it when I see it...... literally.
The Hidden Moon (Sat WeTV) 10 eps - I've been reliably told not to bother, so I won't.
Bad Guy My Boss (Thai Sun Gaga) 10 eps - I DNF'd at ep 7, I couldn't make it. I am weak. Life is hard enough right now, this show is making it harder. Itâs not what I want from my entertainment.
Bad to Bed (Taiwan Sat YouTube) 10 eps - This is a little too low production value even for me. And just very very odd. DNF
In case you missed it
Uncle Unknown finished its run on YT. Censored Chinese BL with paralytically bad production levels. But certainly BL. Boys reunite after a break up only to discover one of them is the step-Uncle of the other. Much to my own shock and surprise I watched all 12 episodes of this. Fortunately, each episode is about 5 minutes long. Under those circumstances is it worth it? Maybe. Itâs bad. But not offensive. So that's a win. And you know me, I love a weird take on the stepbrotherâs trope and incest taboos. 5/20Â watch it only if you have nothing better to do
Next Week Looks Like This:
Gosh there's a lot on right now.
Upcoming BLs for 2024 are listed here. This list is not kept updated, so please leave a comment if you know something new or RP with additions.
November BL:
11/15 Caged Again (Thai Fri Gaga) 10 eps - Penguin escapes zoo by turning into a human. Gets trapped again and a panther falls in love with him.
11/17 Your Sky (Thai Sun iQIYI) 12 eps - A naive freshman and the campusâs popular senior agree to pretend to be a couple - but their fake deal begins to generate real feelings.
11/20 Winter Is Not The Death of Summer (Thai Weds YT) ?? eps - Criminals who meet in prison fall in love
11/20 The Heart Killers (Thai Weds YT iQIYI) 12 eps - Jojo directs FirstKhao & JoongDunk in an action romcom about assassin brothers (Khao & Joong) who meet a tattoo artist ex-booster (First) and a mechanic (Dunk). I'm highly amused that Joong plays the older brother to Khao and that we have a take on the Taming of the ShrewBL. I like that everyone is morally gray. This has all GMMTV's best chemistry in one BL and some fresh concepts that I've only seen tackled in m/m romance novels (check out Amy Lane's Racing for the Sun, thank me later). I'm excited. My only quibble is Jojo, I like his style but his characters can get unreliably messy soâŠ... this gonna be interesting.

"Wild Blue Yonder" is such a phenomenal episode and it instantly became one of the best DW episodes for a simple reason that it combines all the best aspects of Doctor Who AND it is a combination of genres AND it is entirely character driven and atmospheric.
This episode is everything - comedy, drama, horror, mystery, psychological thriller and sci-fi adventure.
It relies entirely on atmospherics and character dynamic.
They really put two brilliant actors and let them shine and give everything they got in so many different genres.
There were silly comedic moments
Heart-wrenching dramatic moments
Terrifying and bone-chilling moments
But the true testament to the acting talent of David Tennant and Catherine Tate was that the episode had only 2 actors in it and 4 characters. But it truly felt like there were 4 different people in the episode. And the task was not easy. These were Doctor and Donna but not quite Doctor and Donna. Like Donna said "The Devil's in the details". It was all in the voice, the stare, the posture, the mannerisms that made these creatures of nightmares so terrifying, because they had the essence of the Doctor and Donna but had it so horribly distorted and twisted and not right at the same time!
And the fact that David and Catherine delivered such a nuanced performance that captured these details so flawlessly deserves all the awards!
The episode is driven by themes and motifs - fear of being known, fear of the unknown and unexplained, fear of being misunderstood, abandoned, not good enough, fear of someone you love not understanding or truly knowing you. The plot also provides individual character development and exploration of relationship between the Doctor and Donna who have not seen each other in years, who are so close and yet were separated by time and space for ages and have changed so much during that time, that neither of them is the same but desperately want to be seen the same way as they used to be by each other. It is also nostalgia and desire for things to be exactly like they used to be.
What can be scarier than monsters who have no physical form or visual manifestation, who steal your personality and bear your face but distort them in the most horrific ways both literally and figuratively? What is scarier than something that has a conscience but can not be seen or touched or categorized? What is scarier than something that can exploit your fears and insecurities and turn them against you?
"Wild Blue Yonder" creates an atmosphere that immerses you in that world which is both a confined space but also the endless dark nothingness, makes you scared, sad, makes you laugh, makes you cry, makes you think how the fictitious horrors of this episode are driven almost entirely by the very human fears of the unknown and being known at the same time. "Wild Blue Yonder" is a masterpiece of acting and storytelling and that's what makes this episode stand out as such a brilliant story! Doctor Who can be silly AND deep at the same time, and when it happens, it is absolutely fantastic!

In "KAOS" nothing is anything, and everything is wrong
Two disclaimers: I am no stranger to modern art, and I have no issue with queerness in shows, or in my own mythology (I'm Greek). I am also aware that KAOS is a comedy. It's in the gutter of British comedy, but still part of the genre. At least I laughed every time they said "Oh God!". I don't believe this is the same person who wrote the great and amusing "End of the F**king World"! The premise of "The gods in our modern world" appeals to me a lot, so that wasn't my problem either. My general issue with KAOS is its horrible delivery, bad writing, and piss-poor Greek representation.
This is gonna be long and full of stupid gifs, so sit comfortably, grab a coffee or some popcorn and... pame!
The "ILoveGreekMythology" Kid
Art without context is just a pretty thing to look at. Most of the time, this context can be found within the art piece itself, as the artist has taken care to weave it in. KAOS refuses to connect itself to any context besides the names and a few vague powers. It aims to exist outside of those "boring old stories of the Greek myth" and be entirely "fresh and modern". Something impossible when the entire show and the meanings are based on ancient recorded material. In other words, KAOS is so meta that it ends up being nothing. KAOS cannot stand on its own because you need more than the viewers being familiar with the Greek myth basics to pull such a show off.
KAOS tells us "See? I know all the names of the gods, and what they did, and I know all the locations, so I am qualified to tackle this". More or less like any Western kid who takes all their knowledge from PJO and Marvel and proceeds to unironically hate ancient deities and make a girlboss out of Medusa.
Here's a Greek word for you guys, ηΌÎčÎŒÎŹÎžÎ”Îčα, meaning "half-knowledge". Î Greek saying very well declares "Half-knowledge is worse than no knowledge". The confidence of thinking you know enough often leads you to grave mistakes whereas the humility of not knowing prevents you from touching shit that you shouldn't. When you have no idea what the original myth is trying to say and spit on its meaning, knowing a few names and locations is just smoke and mirrors. I don't believe the audience fell for that.
And don't get me started on the "subversions". A good subversion is intriguing and thought-provoking. In KAOS, every twist was hollow - Greek myth related or otherwise.
"What if Euridice doesn't love Orpheus?" I don't know, babe. What if??? What was the point of that? What did you show us? That women's stories are dominated by men and men don't listen to women, perhaps? And you chose to twist... the love story of Orpheus and Euridice to show this?? One of the best and most tragic love stories Greek mythology has to offer?? You just mocked the myth, you didn't make anything profound out of it.
The Greek Stuff (Nothing salvageable)
I was surprised to see they had a Consulting Producer (Georgia Christou) and an Assistant Script Editor (Isabella Yianni) who happen to be Greek. And I stress that because those people probably weren't hired or utilized for being Greek. We are not sure they were involved in cultural decisions because we have no evidence and because shows with no Greek elements can have more Greeks than that on their staff.
Okay, perhaps they took 5 seconds to ask Isabella about a greeting - which they proceeded to say in a wrong intonation đđ€It's where Poseidon says "ya sĂĄs" in the Fates, by the way. How he said it sounds more like "for you (pl.)" than "health to you (pl.)".
Surprise! The only Greek actor present (Peter Polycarpou) has less than 5 minutes of screen time and plays the caricature of an immigrant with a thick (and inaccurate Greek) accent. He has a canteen, selling falafel which is not Greek, and Dionysus buys from him an unidentified tortilla wrap (which... is also not Greek, if you haven't caught up).
For the show they brought in actors of Maori, Nigerian and Sierra Leonean, Pakistani, Black American, Latvian-Jewish, Iranian, Egyptian, Indo-Fijian and Malay descent and you tell me it was impossible for them to seek and find an English-speaking, skilled actor of Greek descent in a show regarding Greek heritage. Sometimes I wonder, do y'all hate us so much?
They considered Greeks only to give us a simple (and wrong) greeting and a stereotype. Crumbs, we are supposed to be happy with. By the way, there are over 70.000 Greek immigrants just in the UK, usually in the urban centers, many of them students or fairly young employees in the corporate workforce. Not the largest minority but not hard to spot either.
Another plague of Anglophone shows: Almost everyone's Greek name is shortened. Yes, we know their full names but we are told that we will use the short ones. Greeks and their "long and difficult" names am I right fellas? Because saying "Ariadne" apparently requires 5 years of Greek language training, and no English word ever has more than two syllables.
Coincidentally, short names are cool in Anglophone imaginary universes and the "long" names are not. it's so strange Anglophones never make universes where it's cool for Greek names to be spoken in full hmmm... They don't even want to practice saying a whole Greek name for just 2 minutes in preparation for a show full of Greek names. And don't give me that "Greek is hard" shit when we only talk about a few syllables. If Greek kids can learn English since first grade and people here can sing English songs and spell English names, you have no excuse.
They also said the name "Fotis" means light, which is close enough but... ugh.. It's like saying Sebastian means "respect". I am not sure if they asked anyone or what their research was here. If I had the writers in front of me, I'd be like:
(This character from an all-time favorite Greek show is called Fotis)
They also made the flag of "Krete" an alteration of the Greek flag and the local Cretan flag. Which is the stupidest move, because they had to remove the religious symbol of the cross to make the flag fit the universe. These are flags created based on 1) Christianity 2) the Greek Revolution of 1821.
National Greek flag to the left, local Cretan flag to the right:
Flag of the KAOS' "Krete":
The only time they seriously took into account anything Greek, was the time when they decided to remove the religious symbol of our ethnoreligion AND (from what I could observe) keep the nine stripes?? The nine stripes of our national flag represent the syllables in "Freedom or Death". The colors are from the white foustanela of the mainland attire and the dark blue vraka of the island attire, the clothing of the Revolution fighters. (That's more of a meta explanation but the characteristics of the flag were decided during and nearly after the Revolution.)
I think I don't have to explain it more but it's not a homage to put the nine stripes in an ancient era where they have no meaning, and to replace a cross??? Let's... not replace religious symbols on national flags, okay? Thank you.
Another cultural element they changed was making everyone have a dedicated coin to pay Charon. Orpheus has Euridice's coin, "her coin", and he's meant to put it on her before she got buried. In Greek culture, any coin would do. Sorry that our culture restricts your script, dear writers. I guess you had to bend this too, in order to create a cohesive plot with a semblance of a twist.
Finally, the many "Kerberus" dogs were cute and I can understand the creative decision behind that. However, in a show full of inaccuracies, this made me roll my eyes a little. I think the showrunners know that Kerveros is not a breed of dog, and there can only be one of him because he doesn't have any other "Kerveros" to breed with. On the other hand, as demonstrated from art/writing on the internet, quite a lot of Westerners are not exactly aware of how our monsters work, so forgive my uncertainty đ
Nothing is Anything
Every element KAOS played with ended up meaningless. In the words of a Lifo article:
âZeus is a paranoid authoritarian dictator in mid-life crisis who fears losing his power and murders his aides to vent. Hera is a promiscuous goddess who repeatedly betrays Zeus and has mutilated mute priestesses for protection. Dionysos is a spoiled and immature zoomer who, apart from pranks, indulges in orgies with all genders. Poseidon a sadistic god of the sea, who tortures the crew on his ship for fun. Prometheus is gay and killed his lover so he could overthrow Zeus. Orpheus is a famous pop singer and Eurydice does not love him. Theseus is black and gay. The Erinyes are tough-as-nails mechs that look like they stepped out of âSons of Anarchyâ. The Fates resemble a three-member jury in a talent show. The Trojans are a terrorist group that acts against the gods. Crete is more reminiscent of California than the Mediterranean.â
The "River Styx" is a sea, the "River Lethe" is a lake, the gods are nothing more than spoiled humans, the Moirai are drag queens, the Cave is a club where you have to take a quiz to enter the underworld, and generally everything is modern, flat, mundane and anticlimactic. The producers aimed to achieve a work so meta that a "river" is now a concept, a metaphor, whatever you have in your heart. And those who want to see a river when we speak of a river are probably uncultured swines and don't understand postmodernism. Never mind that rivers are rivers in Greek mythology for a reason. That's not culturally interesting enough to explore compared to the new, cool approach of not assigning meaning to anything. That totally shows love for the original rich and meaningful material...
And the reason behind all this subversion? Probably the shock factor. They brought the characters to a point where they said "We have to save the world from Zeus" - Zeus! The father of gods, heroes and humans! - just because they could. It gives off a certain type of smugness that I personally don't like. I mean, I would like the smugness and cheekiness of KAOS if it wasn't a vapid and practically meaningless show. As nothing symbolizes anything anymore, we are just led from hollow plot point to hollow plot point.
If you cut it out of any cultural influence and see it as a story then it's... okay, I guess. But when you consider that it's meant to derive from certain material and it fails spectacularly, it's not a good story. It forgets its bases and doesn't play with the ancient elements at all. Disney's Hercules did it better, FFS!
Bad Writing (pt.1)
KAOS is not without recognizable themes but their demonstration is so juvenile and heavy-handed that it fails to influence a viewer of average intelligence. For instance, "Riddy" says to her religious mother "You dedicated your whole life to Hera, what about me?" Okay, KAOS, we get it. At the same time, this theme nulls itself because it turns out that Ridy's mother was right to do what she did, as she had a greater goal in mind. (And this, kiddos, is called Bad Writing, because your themes and scenes contradict each other)
The biggest theme I spotted was a criticism of religion and religious people who say "Do as I say, not as I do" and create exceptions for themselves. Only, it's not a criticism of anything real, in this case. It's a fact that some people in the clergy tend to preach peace and love and then they do harm, but we don't know, for example, that The Goddess of Marriage is a cheater and yet she pressures everyone into strict marriages. By focusing their wrath on divine beings who are not known for their hypocrisy, the creators missed the mark.
I can give KAOS props for how it handled Trojans to reflect real issues regarding how immigrants and war refugees are mistreated and blamed. I'd argue it was the only (nearly) well-done theme in the whole show because it had the least on-the-nose delivery and some genuine/serious scenes. But that's it.
More Bad Writing!
Jeff Goldblum's Zeus is shit. He'd crap his pants in an argument with a stern Greek dad/uncle his age. Is this character supposed to be intimidating? (Laughs in Mediterranean) That's not to say that Goldblum is not a good actor, but this role wasn't for him. The same can be said for the other actors, too. They are competent but they only give off the air of "The Greek gods if they lived in London, from the minds of people who think beards and body hair are an affliction". In addition to being misplaced, the actors cannot show their talent when following a script that resembles a children's book.
Why does THE GOD Dionysus have the maturity of a 15-year-old? I repeat, The God Dionysus. He's a freaking deity, and a very old one at that. He is not a teenager neither in appearance nor in experience. In our culture, he is mystical, mighty, wise. Why did they downgrade him so? Just for the plot? This is not Dionysus just because you named him so.
The dialogue rarely takes itself seriously to the point it has you wondering at times "Do people talk and behave like that?". In a comedy where everything is meant to be already extreme and parodied. Even in comedies, something must occasionally be serious so there is a healthy fluctuation in tone and the funny moments can hit you. In KAOS very few scenes treated their impactful dialogue as it should be treated.
The queerness and diversity (good elements, in general) were worse off for being in KAOS. Like, I want these elements to be there. I'm just sad about the whole situation. It's not enough that the show is shit, now you also give an additional reason for conservatives to shit on diverse and queer characters because they are part of a stupid narrative.
I'm the type of person who doesn't mind the queerness of Astyanax and Theseus being lovers in the context of this specific show but they're still the oddest pairing to me because they're from the most irrelevant myths and eras. Also, Astyanax in my mind is a baby who died tragically, for little reason if we are honest, so to bring him back and make him a love interest is... ekh.
In addition, isn't Astyanax supposed to be crippled after a fall from the city walls when he was a baby? Sorry to change subjects but the show is so convoluted and with so many issues that it's extremely difficult to stay on track with what's wrong.
To the person who thought this show was a good idea:
Whatever. Bye. I'm fucking done.

This is also a story about baking.

The most worthwhile (long) evening lakorn from Workpoint TV - The Cheery Lee, Village Headman
if i knew Workpoint TV was gonna put The Cheery Lee, Village Headman (2023) on Youtube with English and 10 other multi-language subtitles eventually, i wouldn't have tried so hard with the thailand vpn to binge watch this through netflix.
if i can recommend one workpoint lakorn from all the very mid ones i've seen, this is definitely at the top of my recommendation.
The Cheery Lee, Village Headman is a light-hearted comedy lakorn set in the rural countryside about a gay make-up artist who got tricked by his sister into returning home to run in an election to become village headman/chief.
Leena/Khaosali (James Rusameekae) is a gay makeup artist and the eldest son of Somboon, the soon retiring village headman of Sri Ban Yen.
Khaomai (Yada Narilya) is Lee's younger sister. She aspires to become Youtuber with millions of subscribers and to travel the world. After hearing that her father has to retire soon, Khaomai devises a plan to drag her brother back home so that Lee would run for local office instead of her.
Bank (Gee Sutthirak) is a recent post-graduate with an environmental engineering degree returning home from studying abroad. He is manipulated/persuaded by his mother to run against Lee for the position of village headman.
The first arc of the lakorn is about Lee and his unconventional journey in running for local office as a gay man.
And the majority of the lakorn is Lee's journey in proving that he's a capable village chief through helping the villagers with their variety of issues, with the assistance of Khaomai and Bank.
Of course, you'll encounter some cartoonish villains and clichés in your average workpoint tv lakorns, but I enjoyed this one particularly because I thought there was a lot of heart into the characters, especially the character development of Lee throughout the lakorn and his family bonds.
So if you ever find yourself wondering how Workpoint low-budget evening lakorns are like đ€, this is definitely a good start.
Fun fact: this is James Rusameekae's first ever leading role in a series, for which he won Best Actor (Evening Lakorn) at 15th Nataraja Awards and became the first Thai LGBTQ+ actor to achieve this. He dedicated his win to the LGBTQ+ community in his speech.
#the cheery lee village headman#james rusameekae#workpoint tv#gee sutthirak#yada narilya#thaimedia#lakornet#lakornsource#claire opens her goddamn mouth#thai lgbtqia+#lgbtqia#thai drama#queer drama#thai series#can i even tag this as bl? probably not right since the ml doesn't have a love interest/romantic storyline

Let's Talk About How Book 3 Ruined Aang
If you've seen any of my prior ATLA posts, you know that I don't hate Aang. In fact, I quite liked him in Books 1 and 2. He was flawed, as all characters should be, but the show didn't shy away from those flaws or justify them. He was called out for burning Katara and rushing his firebending, Sokka and Katara were rightfully upset when he hid Hakoda's letter, he willingly owns up to the fact that his actions helped drive Toph away, and his entire arc after losing Appa and finding hope again in The Serpent's Path was beautifully done.
(Hell, even in The Great Divide Katara says what Aang did was wrong and he agrees. It's played for comedy, but the show still makes the effort to point out that what he did wasn't the right thing to do. You're just meant to understand that he was fed up and acted off of that)
Those flaws and mistakes were addressed and improved upon and helped Aang to grow as a character.
But for some reason, that aspect of Aang's character was completely flipped in Book 3.
The best examples of this are in both TDBS and EIP. Both the show and the fandom are too quick to brush off that Aang kissed Katara twice without her consent, one of which after she explicitly said she was confused about her feelings.
(And yes, she is angry in response and Aang calls himself an idiot. But after this, it isn't really addressed. They go on like nothing happened for the rest of the episode. Aang's lamentation comes from screwing things up with her romantically, not that he violated boundaries)
The show never really addressed why what he did was wrong. Not only because he wasn't given consent, but also because both times he isn't thinking about what Katara wants. In both instances, Aang is only thinking about himself and his feelings. This is something that persists through a lot of the third book. And by Sozin's Comet it ultimately ruins any character development he had built up in the second book.
One thing I feel was completely disregarded was the concept of having to let go of Katara in order to master the Avatar State.
For me, the implication wasn't that he had to give up love or happiness necessarily. He was emotionally attached to and reliant on Katara, to the point where she was needed to stop him from hurting everyone around him and himself. This is obviously detrimental to his functionality as the Avatar. And the point of him "letting her go" wasn't that he had to stop caring about her, it was that his emotional dependency on her was stopping him from being the Avatar he needed to be and that was what needed to be fixed. I don't even think it's about the Avatar State itself, it's about being able to keep your emotions and duty as the Avatar separate.
(If you look at Roku, he loved and had a wife. It wasn't his love for her that messed everything up, it was his attachment to Sozin. He wasn't able to let Sozin go and not only did he lose his life for it, the world suffered for it. It's the unhealthy attachments that seem to be detrimental, not love itself)
And Aang realizes that in the catacombs, which is how he's able to easily enter the Avatar State and seemingly control it. He let Katara go.
So then why does it seem like his attachment to Katara is not only stronger, but worse in mannerism? He liked Katara in Books 1 and 2- obviously- but he was never overly jealous of Jet or Haru. He only makes one harmless comment in Book 2 when Sokka suggests Katara kiss Jet.
But suddenly he's insanely jealous of Zuko (to the point of getting frustrated with Katara over it), off the basis of the actions of actors in a clearly misrepresentative play. Katara showed a lot more interest in Jet and Aang was completely fine with it.
(Speaking of EIP, Aang's reaction to being played by a woman was interesting. He wore a flower crown in The Cave of Two Lovers. He wove Katara a flower necklace. He wore Kyoshi's clothes and makeup and made a funny girl voice. He willingly responded to Twinkle Toes and had no issue being called that. And for some reason he's genuinely upset about being played by a woman? Aang in Books 1 and 2 would have laughed and enjoyed the show like Toph did. His aversion to feminity felt vastly out of character)
I guess my point is, why did that change? Why was Aang letting go of Katara suddenly irrelevant to the Avatar State? It felt like him letting go was supposed to be a major part of his development. Why did that stop?
Myself and many others have talked about The Southern Raiders. The jist of my thought process about it is his assumption that he knew what was best for Katara. And the episode doesn't really call out why he was wrong. Maybe sparing Yon Rha was better for Katara, maybe it wasn't (the only one who's allowed to make that choice is her). Pushing forgiveness? That was wrong. But the episode has Zuko say that Aang was right when the course of action Katara took wasn't what Aang suggested.
Katara's lesson here was that killing him wouldn't bring back her mother or mend the pain she was going through and that Yon Rha wasn't worth the effort. That's what she realizes. Not that she needed to embrace forgiveness. How could she ever forgive that? The episode saying Aang was right wasn't true. Yes she forgives Zuko, but that wasn't what Aang was talking about. He was specifically talking about Yon Rha.
And that was wrong. Aang can choose the path of forgiveness, that's fine. That's his choice. But dismissing Katara's trauma in favor of his morals and upbringing wasn't okay.
I know it sounds like this is just bashing Kataang. But it's not simply because I don't like Kataang, in my opinion it brings down Aang's character too, not just Katara's. But let's steer away from Kataang and Katara for a minute.
The one thing that solidifies Aang's character being ruined in Book 3 for me is the fact that he- at the end of the story- does the same thing he did in the beginning.
He runs away when things get hard.
Aang couldn't make the choice between his duty and his morals. So he ran. Maybe it wasn't intentional, but subconsciously he wanted an out. And this is really disappointing when one of the things he was firm about in Book 2 was not running anymore. His character went backwards here and that's not even getting into the real issue in Sozin's Comet.
There's been contention about the Lion Turtle intervention. For many- including myself- it's very deus ex machina to save Aang from having to make a hard decision. And that in turn doesn't reflect kindly on his character.
Everyone- Sokka, Zuko, Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk, and Yangchen (who was another Airbender and was raised with the same beliefs he was and would understand which was the whole point of him talking to her)- told him he had to kill Ozai. They all told him it was the only way. And he refused to listen to any of them, rotating through his past lives until he was given the answer he wanted.
And before anyone says that I'm bashing Aang for following his culture, I'm not. Ending the war peacefully, in my opinion, wasn't the problem. In a way, I think it allowed the world to heal properly. However, that doesn't make up for the fact that Aang refused to make a choice and face the consequences of that choice. Instead, he's given an out at the very last second.
Even if he couldn't kill Ozai and someone else had to deliver the final blow, that would have been better than the Lion Turtle showing up and giving him a power no one's ever had before. It would have been a good compromise, he doesn't have to have blood directly on his hands but what needs to be done needs to still get done. It would also show that being the Avatar isn't a burden he has to bear alone. That when things get hard, he can't run away but he can rely on the people closest to him to help him through hard decisions.
All these issues aren't necessarily a problem with Aang. Aang prior to Book 3 didn't have most of these problems. This is a problem with the way he was handled

ISAT BAD END THEATER AU NOTES/SUMMARY (MAJOR FULLGAME SPOILERS FOR BOTH BAD END THEATER, AND ISAT/ SASASAP) After a long time brainstorming with friends I present to you.. âTHE BAD TIME THEATER AUâ!
This au is mainly created by me and @coffeewolf54 / @coffeewolfart together! This is not a exact 1-1 au and will def have some unique stuff in here to better match the themes of isat and bad end theater!
Iâve talked about this Au with a lot of my friends on discord ( thank you @felikatze @daily-odile @tealgoat and everyone else who decided to draw art for /listen to me ramble about me and coffeeâs au.)
The general gist of the story and everyoneâs roles are under the cut:
Welcome one and all esteemed guests to THE BAD TIME THEATER! A place home to many tragic tales on display for the world to see.
I am âTRAGEDYâ- (aka the Playwright and Narrator). Alongside me is âCOMEDYâ- (aka The Director) to help showcase what our theatre has to offer to you all.
The premise is simple: You can choose between one of four actors to see their stories and it is our job to show you their fates! Donât fret if you are unsatisfied with a particular ending, my dear Stardust and I can reset the stage anew! That being said every path often leads to tragic ends..but ah, what else can you expect from a place like this?
Even still..even now I wonder.. if this unlucky cast can be savedâŠ
âŠOh well. We should move on now~!
Without further ado⊠letâs meet the main cast!
[ISABEAU: âTHE HEROâ] - A human. His role is the courageous defender that was appointed by the King himself with slaying monsters and protecting people. He is good friends with the Maiden and has been over the years questioning their role thatâs been given to him. The Hero is fairly certain that he has never met any demons before personally but very adamant in the belief that not all demons would want to hurt others. (Though if he were being completely truthful heâd much rather be a fashion designer then have to fight anyone. )
{ MIRABELLE: âTHE MAIDENâ} - A human. Her role is the faithful maiden whoâs meant to passively fulfill her destiny of being martyr lest the town supposedly be at risk from being attacked or killed by evil monsters. She is good friends with the Hero and tries her best to be a devout follower. A huge fan of stories and curious to see if demons are anything like the tales sheâs read in her books. ( Though if she were being honest⊠she has some doubts about her role in life and wants to take action. )
< ODILE: âTHE OVERLORDâ> - A half demon (half human). Her role is the (seemingly) cold and pragmatic ruler of the demons, gaining the title after her father recently passed away. She is described by other people as standoffish, she seems to have taken in the Underling and their older sister under her protection. Wary of humans and tends to lean towards keeping her subjects safe by having very little interactions with them. ( Though if she were to tell the truth, she admits to wanting to have a world where demons and humans can coexist peacefully.)
( BONNIE: âTHE UNDERLINGâ) - A demon. Their role is to serve the Overlord and was tasked to help by providing support to their people by creating food for everyone. The underling and their older sister got saved by the overlord a long time ago- so theyâve been really loyal to her ever since then. ( Though if they were being honest, they want to help protect everyone like the Overlord does and not be forced to stay on the sidelines.)
and last but not least we haveâŠ

By Elisabeth Egan May 18, 2024
âYouâd be shocked by how many books have women chained in basements,â Reese Witherspoon said. âI know it happens in the world. I donât want to read a book about it.â
Nor does she want to read an academic treatise, or a 700-page novel about a tree.
Sitting in her office in Nashville, occasionally dipping into a box of takeout nachos, Witherspoon talked about what she does like to read â and what she looks for in a selection for Reeseâs Book Club, which she referred to in a crisp third person.
âIt needs to be optimistic,â Witherspoon said. âIt needs to be shareable. Do you close this book and say, âI know exactly who I want to give it to?ââ
But, first and foremost, she wants books by women, with women at the center of the action who save themselves. âBecause thatâs what women do,â she said. âNo oneâs coming to save us.â
Witherspoon, 48, has now been a presence in the book world for a decade. Her productions of novels like âBig Little Lies,â âLittle Fires Everywhereâ and âThe Last Thing He Told Meâ are foundations of the binge-watching canon. Her book club picks reliably land on the best-seller list for weeks, months or, in the case of âWhere the Crawdads Sing,â years. In 2023, print sales for the clubâs selections outpaced those of Oprahâs Book Club and Read With Jenna, according to Circana Bookscan, adding up to 2.3 million copies sold.
So how did an actor who dropped out of college (fine, Stanford) become one of the most influential people in an industry known for being intractable and slightly tweedy?
It started with Witherspoonâs frustration over the film industryâs skimpy representation of women onscreen â especially seasoned, strong, smart, brave, mysterious, complicated and, yes, dangerous women.
âWhen I was about 34, I stopped reading interesting scripts,â she said.
Witherspoon had already made a name for herself with âElection,â âLegally Blondeâ and âWalk the Line.â But, by 2010, Hollywood was in flux: Streaming services were gaining traction. DVDs were following VHS tapes to the land of forgotten technology.
âWhen thereâs a big economic shift in the media business, itâs not the superhero movies or independent films we lose out on,â Witherspoon said. âItâs the middle, which is usually where women live. The family drama. The romantic comedy. So I decided to fund a company to make those kinds of movies.â
In 2012, she started the production company Pacific Standard with Bruna Papandrea. Its first projects were film adaptations of books: âGone Girlâ and âWild,â which both opened in theaters in 2014.
Growing up in Nashville, Witherspoon knew the value of a library card. She caught the bug early, she said, from her grandmother, Dorothea Draper Witherspoon, who taught first grade and devoured Danielle Steel novels in a âbig cozy loungerâ while sipping iced tea from a glass âwith a little paper towel wrapped around it.â
This attention to detail is a smoke signal of sorts: Witherspoon is a person of words.
When she was in high school, Witherspoon stayed after class to badger her English teacher â Margaret Renkl, now a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times â about books that werenât part of the curriculum. When Witherspoon first moved to Los Angeles, books helped prepare her for the âchaosâ of filmmaking; âThe Making of the African Queenâ by Katharine Hepburn was a particular favorite.
So it made sense that, as soon as Witherspoon joined Instagram, she started sharing book recommendations. Authors were tickled and readers shopped accordingly. In 2017, Witherspoon made it official: Reeseâs Book Club became a part of her new company, Hello Sunshine.
The timing was fortuitous, according to Pamela Dorman, senior vice president and publisher of Pamela Dorman Books/Viking, who edited the clubâs inaugural pick, âEleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.â âThe book world needed something to help boost sales in a new way,â she said.
Reeseâs Book Club was that something: âEleanor Oliphantâ spent 85 weeks on the paperback best-seller list. The clubâs second pick, âThe Alice Network,â spent nearly four months on the weekly best-seller lists and two months on the audio list. Its third, âThe Lying Game,â spent 18 weeks on the weekly lists.
âThereâs nothing better than getting that phone call,â added Dorman, who has now edited two more Reeseâs Book Club selections.
Kiley Reidâs debut novel, âSuch a Fun Age,â got the nod in January 2020. She said, âWhen I was on book tour, a lot of women would tell me, âI havenât read a book in four years, but I trust Reese.ââ Four years later, on tour for her second novel, âCome and Get It,â Reid met women who were reading 100 books a year.
Witherspoon tapped into a sweet spot between literary and commercial fiction, with a few essay collections and memoirs sprinkled in. She turned out to be the literary equivalent of a fit model â a reliable bellwether for readers in search of intelligent, discussion-worthy fare, hold the Proust. She wanted to help narrow down the choices for busy readers, she said, âto bring the book club out of your grandmaâs living room and online.â
She added: âThe unexpected piece of it all was the economic impact on these authorsâ lives.â
One writer became the first person in her family to own a home. âShe texted me a picture of the key,â Witherspoon said. âI burst into tears.â
Witherspoon considers a handful of books each month. Submissions from publishers are culled by a small group that includes Sarah Harden, chief executive of Hello Sunshine; Gretchen Schreiber, manager of books (her original title was âbookwormâ); and Jon Baker, whose team at Baker Literary Scouting scours the market for promising manuscripts.
Not only is Witherspoon focused on stories by women â âthe Bechdel test writ large,â Baker said â but also, âNothing makes her happier than getting something out in the world that you might not see otherwise.â
When transgender rights were in the headlines in 2018, the club chose âThis Is How It Always Is,â Laurie Frankelâs novel about a family grappling with related issues in the petri dish of their own home. âWe track the long tail of our book club picks and this one, without fail, continues to sell,â Baker said.
Witherspoonâs early readers look for a balance of voices, backgrounds and experiences. They also pay attention to the calendar. âEveryone knows December and May are the busiest months for women,â Harden said, referring to the mad rush of the holidays and the end of the school year. âYou donât want to read a literary doorstop then. What do you want to read on summer break? What do you want to read in January?â
Occasionally the group chooses a book that isnât brand-new, as with the clubâs April pick, âThe Most Fun We Ever Had,â from 2019. When Claire Lombardo learned that her almost-five-year-old novel had been anointed, she thought there had been a mistake; after all, her new book, âSame As it Ever Was,â is coming out next month. âItâs wild,â Lombardo said. âItâs not something that I was expecting.â
Sales of âThe Most Fun We Ever Hadâ increased by 10,000 percent after the announcement, according to Doubleday. Within the first two weeks, 27,000 copies were sold. The book has been optioned by Hello Sunshine.
Witherspoon preferred not to elaborate on a few subjects: competition with other top-shelf book clubs (âWe try not to pick the same booksâ); the lone author who declined to be part of hers (âI have a lot of respect for her clarityâ); and the 2025 book sheâs already called dibs on (âYou canât imagine that Edith Wharton or Graham Greene didnât write itâ).
But she was eager to set the record straight on two fronts. Her team doesnât get the rights to every book â âItâs just how the cookie crumbles,â she said â and, Reeseâs Book Club doesnât make money off sales of its picks. Earnings come from brand collaborations and affiliate revenue.
This is true of all celebrity book clubs. An endorsement from one of them is a free shot of publicity, but one might argue that Reeseâs Book Club does a bit more for its books and authors than most. Not only does it promote each book from hardcover to paperback, it supports authors in subsequent phases of their careers.
Take Reid, for instance. More than three years after Reeseâs Book Club picked her first novel, it hosted a cover reveal for âCome and Get It,â which came out in January. This isnât the same as a yellow seal on the cover, but itâs still a spotlight with the potential to be seen by the clubâs 2.9 million Instagram followers.
âI definitely felt like I was joining a very large community,â Reid said.
âAlumâ writers tend to stay connected with one another via social media, swapping woot woots and advice. Theyâre also invited to participate in Hello Sunshine events and Lit Up, a mentorship program for underrepresented writers. Participants get editing and coaching from Reeseâs Book Club authors, plus a marketing commitment from the club when their manuscripts are submitted to agents and editors.
âI describe publishing and where we sit in terms of being on a river,â Schreiber said. âWeâre downstream; weâre looking at what theyâre picking. Lit Up gave us the ability to look upstream and say, âWeâd like to make a change here.ââ
The first Lit Up-incubated novel, âTime and Time Againâ by Chatham Greenfield, is coming out from Bloomsbury YA in July. Five more fellows have announced the sales of their books.
As Reeseâs Book Club approaches a milestone â the 100th pick, to be announced in September â it continues to adapt to changes in the market. Print sales for club selections peaked at five million in 2020, and theyâve softened since then, according to Circana Bookscan. In 2021, Candle Media, a Blackstone-backed media company, bought Hello Sunshine for $900 million. Witherspoon is a member of Candle Mediaâs board. She is currently co-producing a âLegally Blondeâ prequel series for Amazon Prime Video.
This month, Reeseâs Book Club will unveil an exclusive audio partnership with Apple, allowing readers to find all the picks in one place on the Apple Books app. âI want people to stop saying, âI didnât really read it, I just listened,ââ Witherspoon said. âStop that. If you listened, you read it. Thereâs no right way to absorb a book.â
She feels that Hollywood has changed over the years: âConsumers are more discerning about wanting to hear stories that are generated by a woman.â
Even as sheâs looking forward, Witherspoon remembers her grandmother, the one who set her on this path.
âSomebody came up to me at the gym the other day and he saidâ â here she put on a gentle Southern drawl â ââIâm going to tell you something I bet you didnât hear today.â And he goes, âYour grandma taught me how to read.ââ
Another smoke signal, and a reminder of what lives on.

âIâm sorry, what?â
One life or death situation was already enough for you.
Just because of who you were going to be acting alongside with.
âSeungmin is a nice person,â Changbin explained gently, like he was coaxing a child, intentionally ignoring the way your face scrunched up at what he said. âI did my research, ok? Everyone only has high praises for him, both on and off set. Isnât that enough to be trusted?â
You bit your tongue to stop yourself from digging a deeper hole to lie in. The answer was noâit wasnât enough to be trusted. Now, at this point, someone wouldâve had half the mind to ask why you were so sure about your vendetta against the man.
You crossed your arms and leaned back to rest comfortably on the carseat, turning your head to face the window and glare at the world outside, continuing on with their lives like a well-followed routine.
âY/N, this is a big opportunityââ
âI said, turn the car around. Iâm not attending this cursed table reading,â you pinched the bridge of your nose to keep the incoming migraine at bay.
âYou really think Iâll willingly step into a room with the devilâs incarnate? Iâd rather get shotââ
ââsensing a great shot!â
Fuck. You shouldâve turned that damned car around yourself.

had this one dancing around my brain for a minute before deciding i'm probably never writing it so i'm releasing it into the world in case it sparks something in someone lol
bucktommy actor au
evan "buck" buckley is an up-and-coming actor. he's been acting since he was 18 in minor roles in tv shows and movies but finally gets his big break at 26 when he lands a supporting role in a cowboy comedy where he plays a character named "buckaroo" which earns him his nickname. after that he starts getting typecast as eye candy and comic relief even though he knows he can do serious work until he manages to get signed to 118 MGMT and his new agent, bobby nash, lands him a role in a serious queer drama. this is the opportunity buck has been waiting for his entire career
the only problem? his co-star is no other than tommy kinard, famous action hero actor better known for playing a superhero in a blockbuster franchise before he decided to leave the franchise to start making more serious, critically acclaimed movies (and who came out as gay not that long ago, taking the entire industry by surprise); whom buck might or might not have a huge crush on since he first saw him shirtless, all those muscles out in display in all their oiled glory, in some cop action film when he was a teenager
and everything would be okay if tommy was anything like the rumour mill says he is (offhand-ish, kind of an asshole, too self absorbed) but buck quickly finds out during pre-production that he's actually nothing like that. he's sweet, and kind, and a huge dork. he's got a dry, deadpan sense of humour that may come out as overly sarcastic and rude to some but buck understands perfectly. and he's so nice to buck, always checking up on him in between takes for the more emotional scenes and sharing his acting tips with him. when they have to shoot the sex scene tommy has a 30 minute conversation with buck about boundaries and how he doesn't want to do anything that would make buck uncomfortable, how buck feeling safe is tommy's top priority because as an older, more experienced actor this is old news to him but this is buck's first time shooting something like this and he just wants to make it as comfortable as possible for him
so now buck inevitably falls in love in between shooting, hanging out at each others' trailers, and their dinners that initially were to know each other better before the movie started filming and then became a regular occurrence because they like hanging out with each other. and now buck has to figure out a way to not break his own heart when the filming ends because tommy certainly can't feel the same way and he doesn't think he would be able to get over him before the promo and press cycles begin, especially when all everyone talks about is the chemistry between them
(unbeknownst to him, tommy is having a similar internal battle, berating himself for falling in love with his younger co-star who clearly only sees him as a friend and a mentor)
it all gets resolved at the movie premiere when buck confesses his feelings to tommy during a fit of jealousy over tommy's date. tommy kisses him about it for a long time before revealing that his date is actually his very straight best friend and assistant.
#911#bucktommy#//hayden#tv:911#ship:bucktommy#//mine#these are the thoughts that rotate inside my brain like a rotisserie chicken at 2 am when i cant sleep :/#if i somehow manage to make a dent in my ever growing WIP pile i might try to write this but it's pretty unlikely#you guys really don't want me writing my silly romcom ideas because i'm physically unable to write anything that's not at least 40% angst
