Everyday homeowners are human shields for Wall Street’s Internet of Shit slumlords
Tumblr media
The American Dream, such as it is, used to be two dreams, one based on work and solidarity, the other on asset appreciation and disconnected individualism. We killed the first one.
As the New Deal gave way to the post-war social safety net, Americans discovered two paths to social mobility: they could join a union, and they could buy a home. Joining a union meant that your wages would rise with productivity, and that the democratic ideal that you were meant to approach once every two years at the ballot-box could follow you into the building you spent more waking hours in than any other: your jobsite.
Labor unions used their political power to win labor rights, so that even workers who weren't a union couldn't be arbitrarily fired, or maimed on the job with impunity, or harassed or abused. And while the labor movement was mired in the same racist legacy that every American institution brought forward out of genocide and slavery, where racialized people started unions of their own or demanded representation from the unions who nominally represented them, they thrived.
Then there were houses. On the one hand, owning your home insulated you from the petty tyranny of the landlord, the threat of eviction, rent hikes, indifferent or dangerous building maintenance, and all the other miseries that arise when you think of a building as your home and someone else thinks of it as an asset, and the board is tilted so that they win every argument.
But homeownership wasn't just sold as a way to get out from under scumbag landlords: it was primarily sold as a way to build intergenerational wealth. Your house wasn't just a place to live: it was an asset, and it appreciated.
And if the dividends of labor protection were unevenly distributed between white people and racial minorities, the dividends of home ownership were almost entirely hoarded by white families. Federal policies – redlining – combined with racist lending at the local level, meant that Black families and other racialized groups were stuck in tenancy, while white families build wealth thanks to federal subsidies:
https://web.archive.org/web/20170220005558/https://www.demos.org/sites/default/files/publications/Asset%20Value%20of%20Whiteness.pdf
Those were the two American dreams: a good job and your own home. We killed the first one, and the second one devoured us whole.
Without a strong labor movement, wages stagnated. Corporate power waxed, and with it, the power to pollute, to poison, to maim and to defraud. The labor movement wasn't strong enough to stop Reagan from killing free UC tuition when he was governor of California. It wasn't strong enough to hold back spiraling health care prices. It wasn't strong enough to block the business lobby from neutering antitrust and ushering in four decades of market concentration, market capture and corruption. Workers couldn't save their defined benefits pension and were railroaded into market-based 401(k)s, forcing them to play the stock casino against their bosses, ever the sucker at the poker table.
With stagnant wages and out of control medical, educational and end-of-life bills, homeownership – the thing you do as an individual, where your gain is someone else's loss – became the American secular religion. Your house wasn't just a place to sleep and keep your photo albums: if it appreciated enough, you might be able to liquidate it on your deathbed and pay off your eldercare, your healthcare, your kids' college debt, and leave enough left over for your kids' downpayments.
And so every American who had a home became the enemy of every American who didn't – including one another's children. Every home built threatened your own property values. The racist, batshit American school funding formula, which sees schools funded out of property taxes, meaning the richest kids get the best schools, turned out to be a great way to increase your property values.
Protections for tenants, meanwhile, threatened the entire American way of life – the American dream itself. Every protection a tenant got – protection from eviction or rent hikes, the legal right to a safe and well-maintained home – reduced the value of every home in town.
After all, the better a landlord has to treat their tenants, the less money a landlord can make from a rental property. The less money a landlord can make from a rental property, the less they'd bid on a house like yours if it went up for sale.
And since anyone planning to buy your house to live in it has to outbid a landlord who might want to rent it out, giving tenants any protection threatened everything – the one asset you owned, which was your plan a, b and c for paying off all that health, education, and assisted living debt:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/06/06/the-rents-too-damned-high/
Today, the house-as-asset scam is breathing its last. There are millions more people who need homes than there are homes available. Sure, homelessness is a fantastically complex problem, but you could address every aspect of it – addiction, mental illness, joblessness – and millions of people would still be homeless, because there aren't enough homes for them to live in:
https://headgum.com/factually-with-adam-conover/myths-about-homeless-people-with-dr-margot-kushel
70% of all inflation in 2024 came from the cost of housing; a quarter of that came from illegal collusive behavior by landlords to hike rents:
https://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/up-to-a-quarter-of-rental-inflation
Wall Street landlords have raised gigantic war-chests and are buying up homes at a rate never before seen, converting every available single-family home in many cities from an owner-occupied home to a rental. Private equity and hedge fund landlords have elevated charging junk fees to an absurdist theater project: you pay a "convenience" charge for paying your rent in cash. But also for paying your rent by direct transfer. Oh, and also for paying in cash. When Wall Street is your landlord, your home is a slum, dangerously undermaintained, sometimes lethally so:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/02/08/wall-street-landlords/#the-new-slumlords
Capitalists hate capitalism. The best thing to sell is something your customer can't live without, and that no one else has for sale. That's why "the market" loves private prisons so much:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/02/captive-customers/#guillotine-watch
The vast sums Wall Street is putting into buying up all of America's available housing stock is a bet that they can establish regional monopolies over having a home, and charge all the market can bear.
That's the plan at Invitation Homes, a company that was just targeted by the FTC for a slate of eye-watering crimes against the tenants in the 80,000 single-family homes they've acquired:
https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/09/ftc-takes-action-against-invitation-homes-deceiving-renters-charging-junk-fees-withholding-security
Invitation Homes purchases homes as they come on the market, and they're also a leading customer of the "build-to-rent" housing industry, a fast-growing segment of new housing starts.
Writing about the FTC's enforcement action against Invitation Homes, Matt Soller brings in Starwood Capital Group, who manage Invitation Homes properties, and own 14,000 more homes in the sunbelt. Invitation and Starwood hate the anti-monopoly movement, and Barry Sternlicht, Starwood's billionaire CEO, really hates FTC Chair Lina Khan:
https://www.thebignewsletter.com/p/monopoly-round-up-corporate-slumlords
The FTC complaint lays out a suite of just comically sleazy things ways that Invitation abuses its tenants, starting with false advertising. The company lists its houses at relatively low rents, then charges a large fee to apply to live there. When you pass the application process, you're told the rent is actually much higher, and if you walk away from the deal, you forfeit your application fee. That scam's netted Invitation $18m since 2019.
Stoller really hates junk fees, calling them "convenience fees without any convenience, service charges without any service performed." He lays out Invitation's long list of junk fees, which honestly sound like a list that Chatgpt would spit out if you prompted it for fifty junk fees that wouldn't pass the giggle-test: "utility management fees" "Lease Easy bundle fees," "air filter delivery fee," "smart home technology fees," etc etc.
"Smart home technology fee?" Yeah, Invitation's gone in hard for Internet of Shit smart home tech. The SVP who oversees Invitation's smart home fee program was ordered to "juice this hog" (you guys, juice doesn't come from hogs).
After decades of recruiting everyday American homeowners to demand anti-tenant policies that benefit giant corporations, American tenants have few rights on paper and even fewer in practice. That's left the door wide open for Invitation to abuse their tenants in a myriad of dismal and unimaginative ways: stealing their deposits, trashing their credit reports to retaliate against complaints, illegal evictions, busted appliances, mold, vermin, insects – the whole slumlord playbook.
As Stoller writes, there's a twist: "this landlord isn’t just a random slumlord, it’s one of the biggest Wall Street players in housing."
There are vast fortunes to be made in converting the human right to housing into an asset class, but those fortunes end up in the hands of a very small number of billionaires. On their own, they wouldn't have the political power to dismantle protections for tenants.
Realistically speaking, most kids who grew up in their parents' owner-occupied homes are going to end up tenants, thanks to undersupply and housing inflation. But those kids' parents have spent decades demanding policies to make their homes as valuable as possible – including mortgage tax breaks (but not rent tax breaks!), looser eviction laws, and less enforcement of what few protections tenants have.
Middle class homeowners are the useful idiots and human shields of the billionaires who are determined to force every American under 40 raise their kids in a rented slum full of spiders, ratshit and black mold, which will still cost 60% of their take-home salary.
That's why the FTC's action against Invitation Homes is such a big deal. And as Stoller points out, Chair Khan is really just implementing Kamala Harris's campaign promise to get Wall Street out of the landlord business.
Wall Street's raid on your bedroom and kitchen has inspired a generation of "finfluencer" copycats who buy and flip apartment buildings, sucking ever-larger amounts of cash out of them until they're unfit for human habitation, with mountains of rat-infested garbage ringing their crumbling walls:
https://pluralistic.net/2024/05/22/koteswar-jay-gajavelli/#if-you-ever-go-to-houston
Any future worth living in is going to get housing right. We need to stop thinking of housing as an asset and realize that it is, first and foremost, a human right. That's the premise of my 2023 solarpunk novel The Lost Cause, which just came out in paperback:
https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865946/thelostcause
You can't protect yourself from rising seas or rising healthcare bills through individual home-ownership. Solidarity – the kind of solidarity that once powered the union movement, and that is powering it again – is the only way to defeat the housing profiteers. The New Deal wasn't perfect, which is why whatever we do next has to be bigger, further reaching, and more inclusive than what FDR did almost a century ago.
The only minority that should be excluded from the next New Deal is billionaires.

[November 10, 2023. An exerpt:]
Gathering at the Port
The Port of Tacoma and the nearby ICE detention center are located in an industrial area that also houses a police academy. They are only accessible through narrow choke points; in the past, police have taken advantage of these to target and harass protesters. The preceding action at the Port of Oakland took place in a more urban terrain; as protesters prepared for the ship to dock in Tacoma, concerns grew about the various possibilities for repression. Veterans of the Port Militarization Resistance and other logistically-minded individuals compiled lists of considerations to take into account when carrying out an action at this particular port.
Other anarchists remained at a distance, standing by to do jail support and advising the participants on security precautions. Others set up at the nearby casino, investigating and squashing rumors in the growing signal groups and helping to link people to the information or communication loops they needed. Whether autonomously or in conversation with the organizers, all of them did their best to contribute to the unfolding action.
The demonstration successfully accomplished what some had thought might be impossible, preventing the ILWU workers from loading the military shipment. Unexpectedly, this was not enough. Even seasoned longshoremen were surprised that the military could be brought in to act as scabs by loading the ship.
Could we have focused instead on blocking the equipment from reaching the port in the first place? According to publicly available shift screens, the cargo that was eventually loaded onto the ship had already arrived at the port before the action’s originally planned 2:30 pm start time on November 5. Considering that Sunday afternoon was arguably the earliest that anyone could mobilize a mass action on such short notice, it is not surprising that the idea of blocking the cargo was abandoned in favor of blocking the ILWU workers. Of course, if the information that military supplies were entering the port had circulated earlier, something else might have been possible.
The organizers chose the approach of blocking the workers in spite of the tension it was bound to cause with the ILWU Local 23. Our contacts in the ILWU describe the Local 23 president as a Zionist; most workers in Local 23 were supposedly against the action, despite respecting the picket. The president allegedly went so far as to suggest bringing in ILWU workers on boats, a plan that the military apparently rejected.
There were rumors that a flotilla of kayaks was organizing to impede the Orlando’s departure the following morning. In the end, a canoe piloted by members of the Puyallup, Nisqually, and other Coast Salish peoples and accompanied by a few kayakers blocked the ship’s path for a short time on November 6, but nothing materialized for November 7.
This intervention is an important reminder of the ethical and strategic necessity of working with Indigenous groups who know the land and water and preserve a living memory of struggle against colonial violence that includes repeatedly outmaneuvering the United States military.
The ship departed, but one Stryker Armored Personnel Carrier that was scheduled for work according the ILWU shift screens was not loaded, presumably due to the picket. Given the military work-crew’s inexperience in loading shipping containers, it’s unclear how much of the shipment was completely loaded in the time allotted for the ship, as ports hold to a strict schedule in order not to disrupt capital’s global supply chains.
Evaluation
The main organizers received feedback in the course of the protest and adapted their strategy as the situation changed, shifting their communication to articulate what they were trying to do and explaining their choices rather than simply appealing to their authority as an organization or as Palestinians. Nonetheless, some participants have expressed displeasure about how things unfolded. It was difficult to get comprehensive information about what was going on, and this hindered people from making their own decisions and acting autonomously. Some anarchists who were on the ground report that the vessel was still being loaded when the organizers called off the event; others question the choice not to reveal the fact that the military was loading the equipment while the demonstration still had numbers and momentum.
It is hard to determine to what extent organizers intentionally withheld information. We believe that it is important to offer constructive feedback and principled criticism while resisting the temptation to make assumptions about others’ intentions (or, at worst, to engage in snitch-jacketing, which can undermine efforts to respond to actual infiltration and security breaches in the movement and often contributes to misdiagnosing the problems in play).
Cooperating with the authorities—especially at the expense of other radicals—is always unacceptable. This is a staple of events dominated by authoritarian organizations. Fortunately, nothing of this kind appears to have occurred during the blockade on November 6. Those on either side of this debate should be careful to resist knee-jerk reactions and to avoid projecting bad intentions onto imagined all-white “adventurists” or repressive “peace police.”
In that spirit, we will spell out our concern. The organizers simultaneously announced that the weapons had been loaded onto the ship, and at the same time, declared victory. This fosters room for suspicion that the original intention had been to “block the boat” symbolically without actually hampering the weapons shipment, in order to create the impression of achieving a “movement win” without any substantive impact. Such empty victories can deflate movements and momentum, sowing distrust in the hundreds of people who showed up on short notice with the intention of stopping weapons from reaching Israel. It might be better to acknowledge failure, admitting that despite our best efforts, the authorities succeeded in their goal, and affirming that we have to step up our efforts if we want to save lives in Gaza. We need organizers to be honest with us so we know what we are up against.
It’s important to highlight that ultimately it was the military that loaded the ship, not the ILWU. This move was unprecedented, just like the military spying on demonstrators during the Port Militarization Resistance. But it should not have been unexpected. From now on, we should bear in mind that the military is prepared to intervene directly in the logistics of capitalism.
This also highlights a weakness in the strategy of blocking a ship by means of a picket line and blockading the streets around the terminal. To have actually stopped the ship, a much more disruptive action would have been called for, potentially including storming the terminal itself and risking police violence and arrests. This isn’t to say that storming the port would have been practical, nor to argue that there is never any reason to blockade the terminal in the way that we did. Rather, the point is that the mechanics of war-capitalism are more pervasive and adaptable than the strategies that people employed to block it in Oakland and Tacoma. Any form of escalation will require more militancy and risk tolerance.
At the same time, we should be honest about our capabilities, our limits, and the challenges we face. Although many people were prepared to engage in a picket, storming a secured facility involves different considerations and material preparation, and demands a cool-headed assessment of benefits versus consequences. We should not simply blame the organizers for the fact that it did not happen. A powerful enough movement cannot be held back, not even by its leaders.
Considering that the United States military outmaneuvered the picket strategy—and in view of the grave stakes of what is occurring Palestine—”Why not storm the port?” might be a good starting point for future strategizing. Yet from this point forward, the port is only going to become more and more secure. Another approach would be to pan back from the port, looking for points of intervention outside it. In this regard, the rail blockade in Olympia in 2017 might offer a promising example.
Likewise, while we should explore ways to resolve differences when we have to work together, we can also look for ways to share information and coordinate while organizing autonomously. We might not be able to reach consensus about what strategy to use, but we can explore where we agree and diverge, acquire and circulate intelligence, and try many different strategies at once.

-Spam (Addispam, email-man and ever-changing intern) learned how to make cars in his spare time by himself before he made it big. He never had actually used them, though - just kept them in an unused alleyway and mix-n-matched them in his spare time between delivering emails and internships.
♤~♤
-Click (Banner's boyfriend, baker and party caterer, Pink) lives in an attic above his bakery. It's small, but it feels like home to them. It has a stained glass window overlooking a highway on the other side of Main Street.
-Vice (Sample's co-worker / girlfriend, Service's Trojan, cashier at Cyber Shoes II, Orange) breaks into Sample's apartment at night to raid his fridge / watch TV for a while. She doesn't know that Sample is awake every time she does this and just lets her get away with it (they live in the same complex). She loves the nights that he makes stuff with leftovers for dinner.
-Snap (Broadcast's co-worker and best friend, camera-man, Green)'s favourite drink is a Shirley Temple. They've never been a fan of alcohol.
♤~♤
-Gamble (Mobile and Clickbait's father, casino owner, Blue), despite being an online advertisement, doesn't know much about how to actually use the Internet beyond posting his casino ads. Mobile tries to help him learn by giving him social media accounts, but he's basically like a grandpa using Facebook.
-Mobile (Clickbait’s elder sister, mobile advertiser [mainly in gambling / lottery / casino apps] and casino bartender, Yellow) prefers to go by Cooper / Couper, or Coop / Coup, her middle name - a reference to Martin Cooper, inventor of the mobile phone.
-Clickbait (Mobile's younger brother and Click's Trojan, clickbait advertiser [mainly making Couper's ads more flashy and clickable], casino bartender, Cyber Shoes II supervisor, gossip columnist, Pink)'s only 'true' friend is a young Werewerewire named Amp that he met in the Dark Web.
-Service (Manager / owner of Cyber Shoes II, Orange) has tapped Vice, Clickbait, and Sample's phones to monitor their activity on their phones, much to their displeasure.
♤~♤
-Hanahaki (placeholder name, Purple)'s favourite flowers are lavender and wisteria vines.
-Patient 0 (placeholder name, Pink) is one of the oldest Addisons to exist and hates being one. Not like Spamton and Sample do with just 'being a Darkner in general,' but actively hates the Addison species, and has days where he wants to destroy his casing to be unrecognizable as one... unfortunately he has enough damage to his endoskeleton as is without uncovering his entire inner skeleton.

A few people have asked me for the recs that come with my historical romance archetype quiz in full, and since it's been around a week and I've been procrastinating.... Here they are, in order of popularity (check your triggers, as always):
The Good Guy (by far the winning result... which saddens me a little as a reader but I respect your life and your choices):
Unclaimed by Courtney Milan--virgin hero, sex worker heroine, he's a genuinely lovely man
Scandal in Spring by Lisa Kleypas--a lot of people like Matthew Swift, I like Matthew Swift, there's a very good scene where she hides a key in her bodice and is like COME FIND IT
My Fake Rake by Eva Leigh--gender-flipped She's All That retelling with a nerdy hero who fake dates his equally nerdy friend while being super in love with her
Unmasked by the Marquess by Cat Sebastian--this blurs into a rake vibe, but the hero is a disaster bi who falls in love with his new best friend, only to find out that said best friend is not a man but in fact AFAB and NB; there is a delightful scene in which he watches them from across a ballroom while they pull their glove off with their teeth that lives rent-free in my head
Gentleman in the Streets, Freak in the Sheets:
The Duke Gets Even by Joanna Shupe--THEEEEEE PRIME EXAMPLE, "I'm going to cover you in bite marks, darling" Duke of Lockwood I'm your biggest fan
The Duke Who Knew Too Much by Grace Callaway--the one where the duke is like "oh my god girl I didn't murder anyone I'm just into tying people up consensually"
Waking Up with the Duke by Lorraine Heath--the one where the hero's cousin asks the hero to knock up the cousin's wife and the hero is like "I mean because you asked nicely"; SUPREME angst
The Earl I Ruined by Scarlett Peckham--uptight earl is slandered by the heroine who insinuates that he likes submitting in the bedroom; incorrect, he actually wants to tie her tf up
The Truth About Cads and Dukes by Elisa Braden--marriage of convenience with the world's most uptight duke and a heroine who thinks he finds her plain and fat and gross when in fact he mostly just spends his time restraining himself from doing nasty things to her
Villain Recs:
Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas--because you gotta, though St. Vincent is a softer touch villain than some ("he wouldn't have actually... done it... riiiight?")
Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt--a kidnapping loony tunes hero who blackmails everyone, stabs freely, and calls the heroine the wrong name for like 70% of the book; he also stabs someone while completely naked except for his pink robe
The Dragon and the Pearl by Jeannie Lin--Tang Dynasty evil warlord hero kidnaps heroine to use her for information, then realizes he's falling in love
Shadowheart by Laura Kinsale--medieval assassin hero forces the heroine into marriage for his evil plot, makes her his apprentice in evil, then realizes he SUUUUPER likes it when she doms him
The Prince of Broadway by Joanna Shupe--hero owns a casino and becomes the rebellious heroine's mentor, but is secretly plotting to destroy her father
Daring and the Duke by Sarah MacLean--hero was the villain of two previous books and maybe tried to kill the heroine when they were kids, either way she's super mad about it but oops he's OBSESSED with her
Tortured Hero Recs:
My Darling Duke by Stacy Reid--hero has had to use a wheelchair due to mobility issues after an accident, becomes very reclusive and angsty, until he finds out the heroine has been pretending to be engaged to him...
Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas--Derek Craven was born in a drainpipe, named himself, and essentially was a sex worker until he made his way up in the world, now feels completely not good enough for the intrepid novelist who's stolen his heart
A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall--hero has survivor's guilt and chronic pain + a laudanum addiction after surviving the Battle of Waterloo when his best friend died... twist is that his best friend faked her death so that she could transition and live as who she really is, and now they met up again for the first time in years without him realizing it's her
Pippa and the Prince of Secrets by Grace Callaway--scarred hero reunites with his childhood sweetheart, who's now widowed and way above him in social station... but she's also tortured, and they come to find solace in each other (also: her old husband told her that pursuing her desires was wicked; hero DISAGREES)
Duke of Midnight by Elizabeth Hoyt--literally Georgian Batman, he is the night, also he has a home gym
The Duke I Tempted by Scarlett Peckham--super tortured duke who hides his masochistic tendencies from the world enters into a marriage of convenience with a woman he believes will reject him if she realizes what he wants
A Rogue by Any Other Name by Sarah MacLean--local man who lost his inheritance and land in a game of dice shows up again after years and forces his childhood friend to marry him so that he can reclaim WHAT IS HIS!!! (both the estate and her)
Rake Recs:
Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean--prototypical rake book, Ralston is all "my God woman, binding your breasts is a crime and I am here to save them"
The Duke and the Lady in Red by Lorraine Heath--this guy's mom literally shows up at his house and is like "please tell me you've cleaned this place since the last orgy"; he then gets taken in by a con woman and learns how to love
The Lady Gets Lucky by Joanna Shupe--hero's not taken seriously by anyone because he's such a playboy; he makes a deal to teach the shy heroine sex stuff in exchange for recipes so he can start a SUPPER CLUB and prove himself as a Srs Person
A Rake's Guide to Seduction by Caroline Linden--hero is a ne'er do well rake who realizes he's fallen for his best friend's little sister right when she's proposed to by another man; years later they meet up when she's a depressed widow, and he brings her to life if you know what I mean
Indigo by Beverly Jenkins--hero is a VERRRRRYYYYY smooth rake who also helps free enslaved people in the Underground Railroad, gets the shit beaten out of of him and ends up being cared for by the quiet and practical heroine; and he's like "HOLY SHIT SHE'S THE ONE"
Scot Recs:
When A Scot Ties the Knot by Tessa Dare--heroine makes a Big Mistake and ends up having to marry the gruff hero, but it's only a handfasting so as long they don't consummate the marriage it won't be legit--SIMPLE ENOUGH
When a Girl Loves an Earl by Elisa Braden--heroine becomes obsessed with local giant man, doesn't even realize he's Scottish until she's trapped him in marriage and he drops the English accent and it is a RIIIIIDE for her from there
The Taming of a Highlander by Elisa Braden--heroine ends up having to marry physically and emotionally scarred hero in order to avoid testifying against him, he's all "YE WON'T BE ABLE TO TAKE ME LASS" and she's like "oh bet"
The Highland Guard series by Monica McCarty--medieval Scottish books "what if Robert the Bruce made a Suicide Squad and they were all hot"
The Madness of Lord Ian MacKenzie by Jennifer Ashley--widow heroine ends up in a FWB situation with the hero, who is on the spectrum and considered "mad" by many; then shit gets complicated
When a Girl Loves an Earl by Stacy Reid--heroine gets pregnant by another man and runs to Scotland to marry this guy she's been writing platonic letters to; he agrees to claim her baby; hero is mute and they communicate through written notes at first, but the heroine learns sign language to make it easier for him, super emotional

I actually need to get this off my chest and this is so different from my usual content but I fear if I don't get this off my chest I will go insane. I've been rewatching Markiplier FNAF game play and info dumping to my amazing friend (@diamonds-at-y11) (PLS GO CHECK OUT THEIR INFO DUMPS I LIVE FOR THEM AND ALSO THEY SOMETIMES POSTS ART AND ITS AMAZING AND I LOVE THEM PLSSS SHOW THEIR ACC SOME LOVE mwahuahuahua) ANYWAYS. I wanna talk about how we both believe that unconventional media lowkey has like some of the best themes and topics and I specifically mentioned how FNAF lore is the most authentic (but that's for another post) and how FNAF has a huge theme of child safety and how that is like something to be concerned about. the theme of parent-child relationships in fnaf is something that gets painfully overlooked because of the hogwash of the lore and the fact that it's literally a video game but like I feel like it's so painfully clear that fnaf is lowkey a jab at child brands and organizations and the fact that a lot of child brands do exploit children for profit and how it's so so important for parents to look into brands and the safety of them. If you remember when fnaf gained traction, Chuck E. Cheese literally had so many people going into conspiracy theories about the company and trying to expose them for anything hidden that they might be doing. It was a HUGE thing. There were also other brands that have a predominantly child audience that were a topic of interest amongst people on social media trying to see if they had any hidden malicious intent because if you think about the two most vulnerable groups of people to market to, it's kids and elders. They're the most vulnerable groups by a landslide and when it comes to marketing to children it is painfully easy to take advantage of them, in video game shops, mobile app shops, and in real life where children can beg to their parents for something. Not to mention the entire talk and idea that Chuck E. Cheese is literally a ploy to hook children onto gambling and the idea that the entire business is run by big casinos to hook people from a young age onto gambling so they seek that endorphin rush when they're older. FNAF is literally just a video game in which the entire fictional franchise is seemingly based on the real Chuck E. Cheese franchise. FNAF is literally indirectly telling people of the exploitation of children in the real world but the way they express the harm these things have on children is by having the children in the game be murdered or, in SB, hunted. which imo can be a symbol of how financially burdening and how harmful (the whole casino thing) child focused cooperations can be affecting children, parents, and just overall taking advantage of vulnerable parties BUT THATS JUST A THEORY A GAAAME THEORY

Lost Princessa: Meet the Reaper 11
Alright. I managed to get this much typed. I'm posting on mobile so please forgive formatting errors.
Don't steal my shit.
Warnings: cursing. I think that's it for this one. A bit of a filler chapter although something major does happen.
Tumblr media
They managed to pack what little they had taken from their duffle bags. When they emerged, they found Tessa and Diana waiting. Diana came to hug Megan tightly. "Sweet girl, I was worried sick."
Megan smiled and hugged her back. "I'm alright, Tía. I was safe the whole time. I only worried about you and Tessa."
"We were fine." Diana pulled back. "Your Tío says you have to go. I was hoping to get to know you better. Spend some time together."
"We'll have time. I'm not going far. Just home. I'll see you soon." Megan reached for Tessa, who hugged her gently.
"Prima, do you really have to go?" Tessa asked quietly.
"I won't be far." Megan kissed her hair. "I'll see you very soon." She noted the bracelet on Tessa's wrist with the same crown on it. "Besides - las princessas de los Mayas stick together. Always."
Tessa smiled. "Las Princessas de los Mayas."
Diana sniffed a little. "Tessa- you have something for your Prima?"
"Oh! Right!" Tessa bolted for her room and came back at a run. "I got you something for your birthday!" She handed Megan a gift bag covered in glitter.
Megan laughed and sat down her jacket to open it. Inside she found a crown made of silk flowers, tiny white roses and babies breath entwined with greenery. "It's beautiful, Tessa. I love it."
"It's for your hair! There's more!" Tessa giggled.
Megan laughed again and dug to the bottom of the bag through the tons of glittery tissue paper to find a small velvet bag. She opened it to find a small ring- silver made of laurel leaves. It fit on her pinky perfectly.
Tessa held up her own hand where a matching ring sat on her pointer finger. "Best friends rings!"
Megan hugged her cousin and smiled a little tearfully. "Perfect. I'll wear it every day."
-------------
They loaded Rex in the car from where he'd been roaming in the fenced in backyard while they packed. The cooler in the backseat had been restocked, and Megan’s backpack had been stowed where she could reach it. Megan gave hugs to her aunt and cousin before Hank helped her into her seat and buckled her in.
"Rest some, mi Princessa. We have a long drive and you've had a long day." He pressed a kiss to her forehead before going around to get in the driver's seat.
It was a six hour drive to the casino. They stopped only for gas. Megan slept fitfully in the passenger's seat between bouts of talking with Hank. At the last stop, Hank had leaned her seat back, and Rex had placed his giant head next to hers from the backseat. That kept her asleep a little longer.
When they finally arrived, the rest of the club had beaten them there. Creeper waited at the doors of the casino with room keys for his tired brothers. He brought them to Taza to distribute. They were all part of a conference suite that kept them close and gave them the privacy they'd need.
Hank smiled at Megan’s sleeping form and reached to tuck her jacket closer around her in the cool night air. Rex lifted his head, and Hank reached to pet him. "Stay, Rex. Stay with Megan," he said softly. The big dog laid down again while Hank got out of the car.
Taza chuckled as Hank met him at the hood. "Chica finally out for the count?"
"Not completely. Rex is keeping her asleep right now. She'll probably wake up soon, though. And she hasn't eaten since lunch -" he sighed as he sat back to rest on the cooling hood of the Mustang.
"I'll get Adam to send something up to the rooms for us." He raised two room keys. "Adjoining rooms. Just in case."
Hank reached out and took the one Taza offered him. "Alright." He stood and moved to the trunk to grab their duffles.
Creeper met him there. "Hey, brother. Let me help. I'll take the bags if you want to get the Little Princess."
Hank chuckled. "Alright. Thanks Creep. Just… don't reach for Megan… or the dog. " He grinned and moved to the passenger door.
"Dog? What dog?" Creeper asked confused.
Hank opened the door and unbuckled Megan, shushing her gently as she stirred. "Easy, mi princessa. Just me." Megan settled quietly against Hank's chest. "Rex, heel."
Rex bounded out to come to heel at Hank's left side.
"Holy shit. That's not a dog, brother. That's a fucking horse." Creeper stared wide eyed.
Hank laughed a little. "He's Megan’s. Tell you later."
Taza shook his head as he put the lead on the big dog and tucked the loop of it into one of Hank's hands. "Let's get her upstairs."
Upstairs, all the rooms connected to a central common area. The men doubled up to make it work, but they had a private space. The Mayans were gathered there drinking quietly and talking through the few days they'd been apart. Hank, Taza, and Creeper stepped off the elevator to quiet greetings and several exclamations of "Holy shit-" that were hushed when they noticed the sleeping Megan. Bishop grinned and came to help get the doors open on the main suite so that Hank could lay Megan down.
Hank laid Megan down on the king sized four poster bed and unhooked Rex's lead so he could lay down on the floor between the open door and the bed. He chuckled at the guarding position. The big dog was confused by all the new people, but very obviously didn't want anyone near his mistress.
Creeper took a step inside to set down the duffle bags and Rex's hackles raised. Creep quickly backed up and the dog laid down again.
"Damn. Who the fuck let the princess get a dog?" Angel asked. "And why does it look like it could eat my bike and still be hungry?"
Marcus laughed tiredly as EZ handed him a beer. "Poquito made new friends up north.  Samcro's Sargent at Arms gave her the dog for protection."
"Dude - that fucker's huge. He must dwarf la princessa," Gilly said, sipping his beer and keeping his eye on Rex.
That made Coco snort. "You have no idea, hermano." The sniper stood and took the bags from Creeper. "I'll take 'em in. I've already been introduced." He calmly walked the duffles into the room and sat them down on the dresser. He couldn't resist ruffling Rex's ears on the way out. "Good boy. Watch out for your ma, huh."
Bishop leand in the bedroom door. "Room service is on its way up. Go ahead and wake Poquito so we can call a table, huh? We've got to vote on a title for her, so Galindo doesn't get suspicious when she attends meetings."
Hank nodded. "Alright. Shut the door for me? I want to help her change before we come out. She'll be more comfortable."
"Course. Take your time." Bishop closed the door gently and left Hank to wake their sleeping princess.
Hank smiled down at the sleeping Megan. After a few minutes, he leaned down to gently kiss her awake.
Megan made her cute little squeaky nose that let him know she was walking up and stretched her back a little before letting out a tiny whimper.
"Easy, mi amore. We're at the casino." He checked his watch. "And you're past due for your medicine."
She blinked her eyes open and wiggled a little closer to his body heat where he sat on the side of the bed. "Mmm. We're here? Why did you let me sleep so long? I could have helped carry stuff up."
Hank chuckled and smoothed her hair out of her face gently. "You needed the rest, mi princessa. It's been a long day and might be a longer night. Bishop is calling us to table." He leaned down to kiss her lips gently. "Do you want to change? I've got your sweats here."
She yawned. "Who all is here?"
"Just us. SanPad and the guys your tío brought, Marco and José. We're in for the night." He helped her to sit up with a smile.
"Okay." She smiled a little. "As long as it's just family."
"Just family." Hank stood to retrieve her duffle bag with her sweatpants in it.
He helped her to change into sweatpants and a tank top, and one of his hoodies. He grinned as he helped her pull on her fuzzy socks and kissed her knee. "There we go. Let me get changed and we'll go out to eat and have Templo." He kissed her deeply, then stood to pull on his own sweats and wife beater.
Megan sank to the floor to fuss with Rex's ears and she giggled softly as the big dog licked her chin in excitement. She cood gently at him and buried her face happily in his dark fur.
Hank grinned and leaned back against the dresser as he watched her cuddle her dog. "Take your time, mi princessa. They can't start without us."
"Can Rex come?" she asked quietly.
"Of course. You can introduce him to the others. Well… maybe not Angel," Hank said with a chuckle. "I'd like to see Rex take a chunk out of him the next time he loses his temper around you."
Metabo giggled. "He probably still will even with the introduction. He knew the prospect he bit, remember?"
"I guess it's alright then." He offered her a hand up.
Megan took his hand and stood before popping up on her tip toes to kiss Hank with a smile. "C'mon. Let's go see what they ordered to eat. I'm hungry."
Hank grinned and led the way, grabbing her pain pills on the way out.
In the common area, most of the clubs were dressed similarly to Hank and Megan. The room service carts had just arrived. Hank snagged Megan a bottle of water and handed her her pain pills, which she obediently swallowed.
"There she is! Our Princessa awakens!" Gilly started towards Megan to greet her only to be met with growls and raised hackles from Rex as he stepped between them. "Woah!"
Megan dropped to one knee and wrapped her arm around the giant dog. "Easy boy. Easy. Just new friends." She smiled and reached for Gilly's hand. "Here. Let him smell you with me here. Then you should be good for the most part, Gilly."
Gilly allowed Megan to tug his hand down to be sniffed by the alert Rex. "For the most part?"
"Well- he'll still probably bite you if you make me scream or cry or he thinks I'm scared or hurt. Happy said he was very protective." Megan said, placing a little kiss on her dog's head.
"Yeah. No kidding," Gilly gingerly scratched the dog's ears. "Damn, Princessa. He's fucking huge."
Megan just laughed and motioned for Creeper to come be introduced next. He went as far as petting the dog for a few moments. "Does he help, Little Princess?" he asked her quietly.
"Mmmhmm. He helps with the panic attacks so far. And he keeps strangers away from me." She smiled and sat criss-cross on the carpeted floor, allowing Rex to lay his front half across her lap. "He's a good boy."
Creeper smiled. "Good. We should get him one of those doggy kuttes. Patch him in."
That made Megan laugh.
While Megan was busy introducing Rex to everyone, Hank went to the carts to make her a plate. Bishop had ordered steak dinners with lots of vegetables and rice, so he made Megan's plate carefully. He peeked under the still covered part of the cart to discover a chocolate cake with a candle on it and grinned. It may not be the night he had planned for her birthday, but her padrinos were making sure she was still celebrated.
He glanced over his shoulder with a smile. Megan was still in the floor with Rex, but had shifted so that she was beside the reclining dog as she chatted with her family about her birthday. Coco was describing Megan’s new gun to the others, which led to Megan thanking them all for her new holsters. Hank put her plate at the table that was big enough for all of them to gather around and relaxed. They may not be home yet, but his brothers were there. All that was missing is Mama and tonight would be perfect.
When Megan started to get up to get her new hardware to show Creeper, Hank intervened. "Why don't you wait until after Templo, mi reina?"
Gilly sat bolt upright. "Reina? Did y'all get married too? Damn. You were only gone a few days!"
Megan giggled and held out her left hand with its gold crown ring. "Not married, but Hank gave me a promise ring."
Creeper grinned and examined Megan’s ring closer. "Beautiful, Little Princess! Congrats brother!" He stood to hug Hank.
Riz followed with a smile as did Angel and EZ. Gilly came last.
He looked at the ring with a small rueful smile. "Damn. Guess you really are off the market, huh?"
Megan smiled gently at the big man. "Yeah. I am."
He smiled again. "And you're happy?"
She nodded. "Very."
"Alright." He squeezed her hand and turned to hug Hank. "You better treat nuestra princessa right, hermano."
Hank grinned. "I will. She's in good hands."
"She better be, or I'll shoot your ass," Gilly threatened.
They settled in around the table to eat and Megan tucked her feet up into her chair. Taza had put Rex's bowl in the corner so that he could eat with them too. After everyone was done eating, Bishop had EZ clear the table.
"Prospect, you can hear this, but keep your mouth shut, understand. No patch. No vote," Bishop said seriously.
EZ nodded. "Yes sir."
"Good." Bishop sipped on his beer. "So we're all caught up on the craziness of the last few days by now. We need to figure some shit out. We need a port to bring in the Irish guns and we need it fast. We're home early to meet with Galindo. He was held at Calexico East. Then he was picked up by the feds along with his entire family and held for an undetermined amount of time. When he was released, he called for a meeting as soon as possible. He'll be here by lunch tomorrow."
Everyone nodded and Rex came to sit by Megan so she could rub his ears.
"That being said, we do need to vote on something before he gets here." Bishop paused to meet everyone's eyes. Marcus, Marco and José sat back in their chairs. "It's a club matter, so El Padrino and his men have no say. Brothers, feel free to speak, but you won't have a vote. Santo Padre only." They nodded.
"Alright. So we all know that Megan has been through hell." Megan sat up straight in shock and stared at her godfather. "She knows everything about club business and has since she joined us. Taza and Hank keep no secrets from her, and that was a sanctioned choice on their part. She's our bartender when we're home as well as always being our Princessa. However, she is not a patch. She cannot enter Templo and cannot sit in on meetings like the one with the Sons today. That's the way things stand right now and that's unacceptable."
Angel spoke. "So, you want to what? Patch her in? Women can't patch. It's in the bylaws."
Bishop raised a pacifying hand. "No. She won't patch. She won't vote either, but she deserves a say in what's happening. I am proposing that we create a position for her in the club. One that allows her to be in meetings with us - with Taza and Hank."
Marcus sat forward with a frown. "How's that work, primo? She wouldn't vote?"
Bishop so his head. "No bylaws would need to change. One of our bylaws already says that officer positions can be created or dissolved as needed. Nothing in there says that the person has to be patched to be an officer. It's implied but not stated."
Marcus grinned. "A loophole. You're right, primo. And as an officer- she'll have respect from outside clubs."
"Wait! Why? Why would you need to create a position for me?" Megan asked sitting forward. "I don't benefit the club at all. Don't these bylaws say that these positions have to benefit the club in some way?"
Hank ran a comforting hand down her back. "But you do benefit the club, mi princessa. Every time you've been at the table you've pointed out things we didn't notice or things we needed to plan for. You see the big picture and you can think logically when your emotions are involved."
"And…" Coco said. "You keep your head even when you're scared, Ma. Like today or when your asshole ex threatened the club."
"I was terrified today! I had a panic attack! What if that happens in a meeting? What if another meeting becomes a situation, and I'm distracting y'all and someone gets killed?!" Megan shook her head. "I'm too big of a liability."
Gilly raised a hand. "Alright. But you are that liability whether you're in the meeting or not, Princessa. Coco said it earlier. All he could think about was a stray bullet or ricochet hitting you and you weren't where anyone but him could help. If it weren't for your panic attacks, you'd have been alone today. Better to have you where we can all see you."
There were multiple nods around the table.
"What skills would I even HAVE that you could pass off as a position though? Everyone will assume I slept my way to the table no matter what you do," Megan pointed out. "Are you ready to deal with that backlash?"
Hank growled a little. "Let them say it where I can hear them…"
Marco raised a hand thoughtfully. "I know this is a local issue, but I might have an idea. You're good with guns, right?" At the multiple nods around the table, he clarified. "Like,  I know you can shoot them, but what about cleaning them? Disassembling them? That kind of thing?"
Megan nodded. "Well, yeah. It's kind of part of owning a weapon. I can even make reloads with the right equipment."
The older man grinned. "Santo Padre is about to become the center of a major gun trade operation. Bigger than any Mayan charter has ever dealt with. Wouldn't a dedicated armorer make sense?" He looked around the table. "I know that's normally el pacificador's job, but we usually only have the clubs private armory to deal with. All of us who were military know that any military base of operations has a dedicated armorer. That person is responsible for the units armory. They know inventory and every weapon inside out."
Bishop's smile widened.
Creeper grinned a little. "And the armorer would have to work very closely with el pacificador by necessity. They'd essentially be partners."
Taza chuckled. "And they'd need to be very organized and able to keep up with inventory - like a bartender does."
Even Riz smiled a little. "And be able to find better deals or bargain for stock - like she did with the whiskey last week."
Bishop looked at Megan with a smirk. "Sounds to me like you've got all the skills you need, Poquito."
Megan turned to look at Taza. "Papa?"
Taza reached to turn her to face him in her chair. "Chica, if you don't want it, we won't force you. But - this - this gives you a real job. Not just slinging drinks and smiling pretty. This gives you something only you can do for this club - for this family. It means you never have to stay behind on runs again- unless you want to. You'll be just as much a part of the club as the rest of us."
Megan bit her lip and looked to Hank.
Hank smiled. "Mi reina- if you don't want it - if you want to be my ol' lady and only that - that's more than okay. But Marco is right. I'm going to need someone in the armory. It might as well be you."
Megan looked down at her new rings and the star engraving caught her eye. "Maybe… maybe you're right. And it would mean you and Papa could come off of limited runs. Help the club more because you won't be held back by me."
Taza grinned. He looked at Bishop. "Call a vote, Prez."
Bishop grinned back at his best friend. "All in favor of Megan becoming our armorer and an honorary officer of the Santo Padre Mayans?"
Hands raised around the table.
"Any opposed?" No hands. Bishop smacked the table. "Unanimous. Welcome to the tribe."
