Donald Trump might make the Oscar cut – but with Sebastian Stan playing him
Tumblr media
TORONTO — In the Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice,” famed New York lawyer Roy Cohn lays out three important rules to Trump, his young disciple: “Attack, attack, attack” is the first; “Admit nothing, deny everything” is the second; and “No matter what, claim victory and never admit defeat” is last.
For anybody who’s watched cable news in, oh, the last decade, that all seems pretty familiar. Trump became a cultural figure, first in business and then on NBC's competition show "The Apprentice" before taking the Oval Office. The controversial new movie charts the future 45th president’s rise in the 1970s and ‘80s, but includes echoes of his political era throughout. (“Make America Great Again” even makes an appearance.)
The Oscars also have rules, though it’s an unwritten one that comes to bear here: Play a real-life figure and you’ve got a decent shot at a nomination. Which is a boon for “Apprentice” stars Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong, who give outstanding performances as Trump and Cohn, respectively.
“The Apprentice” (in theaters Oct. 11), which had a surprise screening at the Toronto International Film Festival Thursday, starts with a young Trump working for his father Fred's real estate company. Donald dreams of opening a luxury hotel in Manhattan, but starts out going door to door collecting rent. He meets Cohn, who first helps the Trumps in court and then becomes a mentor to young Donald, who listens intently as Roy rails about civil rights, makes hateful remarks and says leftists are worse than Nazis.
Trump takes to heart Cohn’s advice ― there are only two kinds people in the world, “killers and losers” ― his hotel business takes off and turns him into a Manhattan power player. There’s a turn, however, and the movie focuses on how Donald’s confidence and cruelty takes hold. He cheats on wife Ivana (Maria Bakalova), rapes her in one of the film's most disturbing sequences, and shuns Cohn after he becomes sick and eventually dies from AIDS.
The most fascinating aspect of “Apprentice” is watching its leads change their characters and body language to drive home that cinematic shift. Stan starts out playing Trump as an awkward, lonely sort before taking on more of the mannerisms that we’ve seen on our national political stage in recent years. (Even though he doesn’t quite look like Trump, the voice and inflections are spot on.) Strong is initially a scary and discomforting presence before gradually turning more sympathetic as his disease sets in and Trump worries he’ll get sick just being around his former friend.
Granted, it’s not normal for a biopic about a presidential candidate, and a high-profile film-festival one at that, to arrive less than a month before the election. It likely won’t sway voters either way, whether they see Trump as monarch or monster, and Trump’s more likely to threaten legal action than show up to the Oscars. But the movie’s worth paying attention to because of its powerful acting, from Stan, Strong and Bakalova. (In a packed best-actor lineup, one of Stan’s biggest rivals will be himself, since he’s also phenomenal in this month's “A Different Man.”)
One of the best scenes, in which Trump and an ailing Cohn let each other have it with all the venom they can muster, wraps up a lot of the core themes in a movie filled with meta commentary. Trump’s screwed over Cohn, and the lawyer tells him “you were a loser then and you’re still a loser” and that he’s “lost the last traces of decency you had.”
“What can I say, Roy,” Trump snarls. “I learned from the best.”

zb1 as ontario universities + programs
yes this is an incredibly niche topic but this has now become my chosen coping mechanism for uni decisions
Tumblr media
sung hanbin - queens health science
such a pretty campus
a lot of historic buildings and freshly manicured lawns that i think would fit hanbin perfectly
and like imagine him with soft academia
it’s just a really nice school and its health sci program is one of the best in ontario
like it’s very neutral good
and he feels like he would make a really good doctor, like pov sung hanbin is your family doctor LMFAO
and like i think he’d do a great job, probably has the prettiest notes and always does his part during group projects
Tumblr media
zhang hao - queens commerce
ofc i had to keep haobin together
but dw neither is sacrificing their education for the other person (remember kids the only person who can get you your degree is you)
queens commerce is also one of the best business schools in ontario
ik that zhang hao is a music kid but that felt like cheating so this is an alternative!
out of all of zb1 he feels like the most business type person?
like he’s so smart and always plans ahead
so i feel like he could be successful in anything he tried but especially business because it’s so lucrative and opens the door to so many paths
like hanbin i think he suits the clean and historic school vibes
they both have a very curated?? for lack of better word image and i think they’d look like they were in a photoshoot every time they step out on campus
Tumblr media
park gunwook - uoft criminology, law and society
university of toronto!!
i’m just saying, debate is literally the gateway to law
and i’d be willing to bet that he has done or considered mock trial so i think this would fit super well
he knows a lot about history and philosophy, so i can see him being interested in studying a humanity
in canada, you need to get a bachelors before going to law school, so a lot of people do something related
this is basically as good as you can get
i also think gunwook would do well in uoft
it can be a kind of isolating experience because the school is so big and a lot of people commute so there isn’t much of a social scene
but as the resident social butterfly, i feel like gunwook would be able to establish a good circle
and also i think he would like the energy of the city
there’s always something to do and both city hall and parliament are literally right next to the campus
alternatively, i considered university of ottawa, which is good for its social science since you know, it’s literally in the capital city of canada so its law program is really good
but honestly there’s not much undergrad wise
i could see him going for graduate school though
i don’t know lawyer gunwook just feels right
he’s good at making decisions, works well under pressure, has the fundamentals down, and is a hard worker so i can definitely see him making it into law school
Tumblr media
kim taerae - waterloo computer science
listen
listen
i know that taerae isn’t that genre of nerd
but the glasses
him being losercore
like you can’t tell me he wouldn’t go to the most loser of all loser schools in ontario
(btw waterloo is not bad, it’s actually really good for engineering and comp sci but also everybody there has no life hence the loser allegations)
(also because if you do eng or comp sci you are inherently a loser i’m so sorry pls continue to run tumblr though)
but yeah i can definitely see him doing comp sci maybe like ui ux stuff
actually the more i think about it the more it makes sense for me
he’s also the only thinking (mbti) in zb1 and his fashion sense would fit in perfectly with the rest of the department
Tumblr media
seok matthew - mcmaster nursing
like hanbin, i really do see him doing something healthcare related
mcmaster is second for nursing, after uoft, but i don’t think matthew would like toronto as much
from what i’ve heard, vancouver is a lot greener, more laid back, and hiking culture is big there
toronto kind of offers none of that, with the addition of pretty bad air quality comparatively (still pretty good though because canada’s pretty sparsely populated)
mcmaster though is in a smaller town that’s essentially just a university town and also has a trail literally right on campus
it’s a smaller, more tight knit community and nursing is a pretty small program so it’d be even closer
i think he would have a really good time with mcmaster’s social scene
it’s also right by lake ontario and has pretty decent weather
Tumblr media
ricky shen - uoft rotman
another business student, are we surprised?
i also considered art but our only really good art school is ocad and as far as i know it doesn’t focus on traditional art as much
so anyways mr young and rich tall and handsome is going to go the business route
uoft is really international student friendly, mostly because they accept a lot of international students and because toronto is also pretty diverse
like you can truly get any type of cuisine here and we have a really big asian population too
so as a person who also immigrated here, i’d say it’s not a terrible transition
definitely the most diverse of any of the ontario schools
once again, the social life at uoft is not great but usually the business schools are better
han yujin - still in high school
Tumblr media
han yujin - university of guelph kinesiology
since yujin’s currently studying dance at his school, i thought that kinesiology would be a good fit
for those who don’t know, it’s essentially like sports science?? or studying the way people move and so forth
he also plays soccer and just gives off like sporty vibes?
like the quiet kid who is surprisingly the fastest on the team
once again, uoft is technically the best for this, but it’s kind of a scary place to go into alone so i can see yujin choosing a quieter school
i’d say guelph is even more closely knit than mcmaster by virtue of it being a smaller city and a smaller school
they have a solid health science program though and good student support too, which i think he’d benefit from
Tumblr media
kim jiwoong - uoft english literature
so
i know that he is an actor
and i considered having him go the performing arts route
however, i know nothing about those schools and once again i think it’d be too easy
so to make my life harder, instead of having jiwoong perform shakespeare plays, i’m making him read and analyze them instead
he gives off like that one english teacher you had who changed your life and helped you rekindle your love of reading after your gifted burnout yknow
but yeah i see him going into english lit to go be a teacher
and uoft would be perfect for that because it not only has i believe one of the largest libraries in north america, but also a really big teachers college once he’s done getting his bachelors
he also seems like he would be able to fit in in any environment, so i don’t see uoft’s size or atmosphere being a problem for him
Tumblr media
kim gyuvin - toronto metropolitan university performance: acting
i saved the best for last
ik i literally just said that i wasn’t going to do performing arts for jiwoong but this is different
something about his performance during the musical segment of boys planet changed the way i viewed him forever
like??????? how is he that good for like the most random challenge ever
i think he’d be really good at acting seriously so anyways!
also tmu (formerly known as ryerson) is just a very fun vibe
it’s in the more downtown area of toronto compared to uoft and right by the entertainment district
the nightlife is so good and gyuvin would probably be the life of the party
tmu’s also like uoft’s funkier younger cousin so i think that fits his vibe well

"Actor Stan . . . does a bang-up job capturing Trump’s verbal cadence and tics, his hand gestures and his smirk, which seemed a lot less obvious in the 1970s and ’80s than they are now."
The Toronto Star (click for article)
‘The Apprentice’: A terrific portrait of the man who made Donald Trump a ‘killer’
Peter Howell
May 20, 2024
The Apprentice
3.5 stars (out of 4)
Starring Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, Maria Bakalova and Martin Donovan. Written by Gabriel Sherman. Directed by Ali Abbasi. Premiering at the Cannes Film Festival. 120 minutes.
“Attack, attack, attack!”
That’s the first rule of success laid down by Roy Cohn, the ruthless New York lawyer who takes a young Donald Trump under his wing in Ali Abassi’s terrific “The Apprentice,” one of two Canadian films that made its world-premiere Monday at the Cannes Film Festival. (The other is David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds.”)
Cohn’s other two rules for winning are “admit nothing, deny everything” and “claim victory and never admit defeat,” slogans that will resonate for decades to come.
The year is 1973. Listening very closely to Cohn’s cocky mantra is future U.S. president Trump (Sebastian Stan), who is 27 and hungry. He’s trying to establish himself as a player in New York real estate so he can get out from under the shadow of his controlling father, business tycoon Fred Trump (Martin Donovan).
Cohn (Jeremy Strong), who looks like a rattlesnake in a suit, is holding court with his henchmen in New York’s ritzy Le Club, which Trump has just joined. He’s introduced to Trump as the lawyer “who got the Rosenbergs the chair,” a reference to the notorious 1953 spy trial of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.
This is music to Trump’s ears; the U.S. Justice Department is accusing him of racial discrimination in his housing rental deals and he needs a take-no-prisoners attorney to fight back. Cohn and Trump become fast allies in what Strong has described in interviews as “a love story.”
So begins a film, and a close relationship that continued until Cohn’s death in 1986, which answers a lot of questions about how Trump became the showboating power seeker he’s known as today. He was the eager pupil of a man who believed, to quote yet another of Cohn’s sayings: “You have to be willing to do anything to anyone to win.”
“The Apprentice” marks the second bid for the Palme d’Or by Iranian-Danish filmmaker Abbasi, who in 2022 debuted in the main Cannes competition with the crime thriller “Holy Spider.”
Actor Stan, best known for playing a brainwashed assassin in the Marvel movie “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” does a bang-up job capturing Trump’s verbal cadence and tics, his hand gestures and his smirk, which seemed a lot less obvious in the 1970s and ’80s than they are now.
His new film, a Canada/Ireland/Denmark co-production shot in Ontario, opens with bold 1970s-style credits and music, and a disclaimer that not everything that follows is based on strict fact.
The film seems at first to be impressed by Trump and maybe even sympathetic toward him. Mention is made of a New York Times profile that admiringly compares Trump’s tousled hair to that of Robert Redford’s.
Trump has to put up with a lot of verbal abuse from his father, who scorns his son’s plans to build a luxury hotel — which we’ll later know as the landmark Trump Tower — in a dodgy neighbourhood in downtown Manhattan, at a time when New York is on the verge of bankruptcy.
The tendency is to root for a guy like that, and to cheer him on he meets and aggressively woos his future wife, Ivana (Maria Bakalova of “Borat 2”), a successful model who demands a $100,000 payment before she’ll marry a man she rightly suspects is not to be trusted.
Cohn, on the other hand, refuses to take money from Trump, saying he values him more as “a friend” — and it’s clear he means the kind of friends that Don Corleone has in “The Godfather.”
It doesn’t take long for Trump’s true colours to emerge as his Faustian deal with Cohn deepens. He begins referring to people as either “killers” or “losers,” and he bullies New York civic leaders to cut him sweetheart tax deals to bankroll his building binge.
As his confidence builds, so does his swagger and he begins pulling away from Cohn, a closeted gay man who has contracted AIDS (although he denies it), which will ultimately kill him.
Trump also tires of Ivana, cruelly casting her aside following brutal sex that looks anything but consensual on her part.
How much “The Apprentice” is based on strict historical facts is hard to verify.
But none of it is hard to believe — especially a scene near the end where Trump takes credit for the three rules of success quoted above and which he attributes not to Cohn but rather to his own “natural ability.”

INTRO.
oops i'm already late but a quick intro while i have a chance!! hi everyone this is laur (@bejinyoung) again attempting a second muse because this dude spawned in my head a couple weeks ago and won't leave me alone!!!!
to be honest i haven't finished his bio yet so i'll put a quick tl;dr under the cut with the highlights and hopefully i can get some plots rockin' and rollin' with alex!
ps. this is a new blog so i'm stuck with the new post editor. please pray 4 me.
the history!
mom's a particularly cutthroat lawyer and dad is a former major league baseball player who was more or less babytrapped by mom while she was visiting her extended family in korea. due to conservative beliefs and values, he married her anyway and moved to canada with her to raise the baby (it's a girl!).
alex was also born in toronto, ontario (canada) and was more or less an accident. his mom really didn't want a second child, especially not one FOURTEEN years after her first, but due to conservative beliefs and values (there is a pattern here) she kept the baby (alex) anyway. that said, she was not a very affectionate mother. his dad, on the other hand, was fairly doting but not always present.
alex kinda grew up a little too independent. his sister didn't want much to do with him (what high schooler wants to deal with an infant anyway?), his dad was always busy, and his mom was distant at best, cold at worst.
side plot: alex at some point realized that he looked nothing like his father. and also not that much like his mother. while he's never dared to ask, he assumes he's the product of an affair. he can tell that there's no love left in his parents' marriage one way or the other, but they stay together due to conservative beliefs and values.
CW INJURY // like his dad, alex had a keen interest in baseball from a young age! he started out in little league and was quite the little talent. he continued to play until 8th grade; he made the junior varsity team (he passed the special test for underclassmen to play with high schoolers) but in an unfortunate accident in practice, he broke his femur. he's now fully healed, but whether it's physical or psychological his leg has never really felt the same. while he can walk and function normally in most of his daily life, it still aches with too much hard activity. the pain was bad enough that he had to give up his baseball career dreams.
while still initially recovering from said injury, alex was quite bored. he's always been competitive so he eventually fell into the wild world of video games. first person shooters in particular appealed to him. and he became quite good at them. this will be important later.
another side plot: his sister is married to @bexabbi's brother. alex was only invited to the wedding because people would ask questions if he wasn't.
somewhere halfway through high school, alex's dad decides he has had enough. he legally splits from his wife (she takes everything) but alex is old enough to tell the judge that he'd rather stay with his dad than his mom. his mother puts up a fight at first, if only just to spite her ex, but eventually she relents and dad gets sole custody. alex and dad move back to south korea a year later and alex finishes his schooling in seoul.
at some point, his prowess at fps games earns him a spot on an overwatch contenders team (the very same as @renxbe) as another dps. i actually don't know too much about games so bear with me here because i have no idea who he mained at the time, we will determine these details later. anyway, through a series of unfortunate events, alex's contract was not re-signed or extended and he ended up leaving overwatch entirely to join a valorant challengers team instead. he's still playing valorant professionally and streams on the side just for fun. his whole team is hoping to win the challengers league and become a franchised team in the Big international competitions <3
his stream content is a lot of valo (again i dont know much so can't tell u who he mains rn) but he also does some other variety content.
anyway these days he's a creative writing major (mostly to spite his mother, who would've dropped dead if any of her kids weren't doctors or lawyers, etc.) and has vague plans to write a novel if streaming fizzles out for him. he doesn't currently have any particular interest in music but i'm hoping to give him some connections to change that!!
a little bit of personality info too:
i kinda consider him the guy asking the question "aren't you tired of being nice? don't you want to go ape shitt" and he is currently tired of playing nice and is going a bit ape shitt
not completely impulsive but definitely doesn't overthink so many things. sexuality in particular. he's not defining himself by any one label and is currently in an experimental stage? he's figuring out what he likes and his preferences at a pretty laidback pace and just kinda enjoying the experience.
sarcastic piece of shit. not exactly loud, but annoying as hell when he does speak up. i don't really know how to describe this vibe but just know that despite having nothing to contribute to any conversation, he was very demanding for my attention and to be brought to life in wannabe. he still has nothing to contribute to the conversation.
he sometimes acts like he doesn't care too much about school but he's academically very intelligent. he pretends he's taking creative writing because it's easy but he's secretly very interested in storytelling in unique ways; he thinks it'd be fun to use what he's learning to create some sort of arg or maybe even write a script for a video game someday? he's not entirely sure yet, he's a bit too unfocused to really commit to any one project. maybe he'll just be a boring novelist someday!
i don't have any particular plots in mind Yet and this post is already so long omg so i might try to get some ideas up in a separate post later! but for now! if anything piques your interest please let me know, leave a like, whatever you're up for and i'm so excited to get to plotting with the boy!

The Role of a Divorce Lawyer in Toronto: Why You Need One
Going through a divorce is one of the most emotionally and legally complex experiences many people face. While it may be tempting to handle the process on your own, having an experienced divorce lawyer by your side can make a significant difference. In Toronto, divorce lawyers play a crucial role in ensuring your rights are protected, guiding you through the legal system, and helping you achieve a fair resolution. Here’s why hiring a divorce lawyer is essential.
Tumblr media
1. Expert Guidance Through the Legal Process
Divorce involves navigating a web of legal requirements, including filing documents, meeting deadlines, and understanding family law in Ontario. A divorce lawyer ensures that you:
Understand your rights and obligations.
File all necessary paperwork correctly and on time.
Avoid common legal pitfalls that could delay or complicate your case.
Their expertise is particularly valuable in Toronto, where the family court system can be complex and challenging to navigate without professional help.
2. Objective Advice During Emotional Times
Divorce is often accompanied by intense emotions, which can cloud judgment and lead to impulsive decisions. A divorce lawyer provides an objective perspective, helping you:
Stay focused on your long-term goals.
Avoid making emotional decisions that could negatively impact your case.
Prioritize issues that matter most, such as child custody or financial stability.
3. Protecting Your Rights and Interests
One of the primary roles of a divorce lawyer is to advocate for your best interests. Whether it’s negotiating a settlement or representing you in court, they ensure that:
You receive a fair division of assets and debts.
Child custody and support arrangements align with your preferences and the best interests of your children.
Spousal support is calculated accurately based on your financial situation.
4. Efficient Conflict Resolution
Divorces can become contentious, especially when spouses disagree on key issues. A skilled divorce lawyer can:
Act as a mediator to facilitate productive negotiations.
Reduce conflict by handling communication with your ex-spouse or their lawyer.
Propose creative solutions that satisfy both parties and avoid prolonged disputes.
5. Court Representation When Necessary
While many divorces in Toronto are resolved through negotiation or mediation, some cases require court intervention. If your case goes to court, a divorce lawyer:
Represents you effectively, presenting evidence and arguments in your favor.
Understands court procedures and ensures compliance with legal standards.
Advocates for you to achieve the best possible outcome.
6. Handling Complex Financial Matters
High-net-worth divorces or cases involving significant assets can be particularly complex. A divorce lawyer can:
Work with financial experts to accurately value assets, including properties, investments, and pensions.
Identify hidden assets or financial discrepancies.
Ensure a fair distribution of marital property.
7. Customized Legal Strategies
Every divorce is unique, and a one-size-fits-all approach rarely works. A divorce lawyer develops a personalized strategy tailored to your specific circumstances, whether it involves:
Protecting business interests.
Addressing international custody disputes.
Managing spousal support modifications post-divorce.
When Should You Hire a Divorce Lawyer?
While some couples pursue an uncontested divorce and settle issues amicably, hiring a lawyer is advisable if:
There are disagreements about child custody, support, or property division.
You suspect financial dishonesty from your spouse.
You’re unfamiliar with Ontario’s family laws.
The divorce involves significant assets or debts.
Conclusion
The role of a divorce lawyer in Toronto extends far beyond paperwork and legal jargon. They are your advocate, negotiator, and guide through one of life’s most challenging transitions. By hiring a skilled divorce lawyer, you ensure that your rights are protected, conflicts are minimized, and you achieve the best possible outcome for your future. If you’re facing a divorce, don’t hesitate to seek the support of a knowledgeable Toronto divorce lawyer to navigate the journey with confidence and clarity.

When Should You Hire a Toronto Divorce Lawyer: Key Signs to Watch For
Tumblr media
Divorce is a significant and often emotional decision that requires careful consideration and legal guidance. While every relationship and situation is unique, there are common signs that indicate it might be time to seek professional help from a divorce lawyer in Toronto. Here are some key indicators that hiring a lawyer could be the right move for you.
1. Complex Financial Situations
If you and your spouse have shared substantial assets, investments, or businesses, dividing those assets can be complicated. A Toronto divorce lawyer can ensure that your financial interests are protected, helping you navigate property division, retirement accounts, and any spousal support agreements.
2. Custody and Support Issues
When children are involved, divorce becomes even more complex. Determining child custody and support can lead to disagreements, and a lawyer can help mediate these discussions to reach a fair outcome for both parents. A family law attorney will ensure that the best interests of your children are prioritized throughout the process.
3. Disagreements on Key Issues
If you and your spouse are unable to agree on key aspects such as alimony, property division, or custody arrangements, it's time to seek legal counsel. An experienced divorce lawyer can guide you through negotiations and ensure that your rights are protected, helping you avoid prolonged legal battles.
4. Domestic Violence or Abuse
In cases of domestic violence or emotional abuse, hiring a divorce lawyer is essential to ensure your safety and protect your legal rights. A lawyer can help you secure restraining orders, as well as guide you through the divorce process in a way that prioritizes your well-being.
5. Uncertainty About Legal Procedures
Divorce laws in Toronto can be complex, and if you’re unfamiliar with the process, it’s easy to make mistakes that could cost you in the long run. A skilled divorce lawyer will help you understand your rights, obligations, and the necessary steps to take, ensuring that you are prepared for court proceedings or settlement negotiations.
6. Long-Term Separation
If you’ve been separated from your spouse for a significant period, you may wish to formalize the divorce. In Toronto, the legal requirements for divorce include being separated for at least one year in most cases. A divorce lawyer can help you navigate this process and move forward with your life.
Final Thoughts
Navigating the emotional and legal complexities of divorce is challenging, but having the right legal support can make a world of difference. If you're facing any of these situations, hiring a divorce lawyer in Toronto is an essential step to protect your interests and ensure a smoother transition through this difficult time.
