Although it is Kate Berlant month, I have still been interviewing people who've created some of the BEST Bo Burnham content online.

Case in point, today's post is one that I have been trying to set up for over a year now—Zachary Marsh, the incredible editor who assembled one of my favorite Bo videos: the HCA Virtuoso Award montage! 👀

This is a truly stunning creation by an editor at the top of his game, and we discuss how Zach became a fan of Bo's works, what led to his editing decisions, and what the HCA thought of Bo's acceptance "speech" (the only one he EVER gave for Inside lol).

"Well, well. Look who's inside again."

"Went out to look for a reason to hide again."

Summary: This is your first time playing a major role in a movie and it's intimidating. Jenna comforts you after you hide away in your trailer.

Part 1. Part 2.

The muted sound of everyone talking fills my ears as I zone out. The first few days on set are being used to get the cast adjusted to each other. I've never had such a major role before in a big movie, to say I'm nervous is an understatement.

I already have trouble talking to people normally, how am I supposed to talk to celebrities? Especially when they're the ones approaching me. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

"Y/n?" A voice enters my head, my head perking up at the mention of my name. I meet my eyes to Jenna's. "Are you okay?"

"I uh, yeah I'm doing good." I force a smile before looking to the side, avoiding her gaze. I have never felt more parasocial in my life. How am I supposed to hold a conversation with these people, especially Jenna, when I feel like I already know too much about them and they know nothing about me.

The main cast consists of four people. Jenna Ortega, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, and I. It's one of those horror movies where it's a group of teenagers investigating something where they should die because of it, but we all know they won't because it's a movie.

"So are you excited? This is your first major role right?" I turn towards the voice to meet Finn. "This could be a big debut for you."

"Yeah I'm excited." I grab my arm, holding myself and taking up as little space as possible. "I'm mostly nervous though, a lot can happen."

I feel Jenna's gaze on me, so I turn to look at her to find a look of curiosity in her eyes. "It can be intimidating, but you can do it. I believe in you." Jenna's genuine smile meets my uncertain face.

Jenna saying 'I believe in you' repeats in my head like a metronome. This somehow makes me feel more nervous and also safer at the same time.

I just don't want to embarrass myself in front of these people, especially Jenna.

It seems the conversation continued while I was in my head. Everyone's eyes were on me expectingly. Did they ask me something?

"Sorry, what'd you guys say?" I ask, Finn and Wyatt look at each for a moment with a face that I can't tell is annoyance or uncertainty. "It wasn't important." Wyatt states.

That feeling of safety is now gone, my heart beating at a thousand miles an hour.

Was it important?

I feel my legs start to shake from the nerves, as if I could fall at the slightest inconvenience.

The nervousness replaced with anxiety and uncontrollable thoughts. 'Did I already blow it before I did a single scene? Does everyone think I'm annoying? That I'm distant?'

I find Jenna's worried gaze on me yet again, causing me to look at the ground for a moment before trying to keep eye contact with the main cast and failing. "I'll be back."

I quickly find myself walking to my assigned trailer, my pace faster than usual. When I finally find myself inside, I close the door pushing my back against it before sliding down. I sit there with my knees to my chest and head in my arms wrapped around my legs.

I already decorated my trailer to procrastinate on meeting the others. I tried my best to make it feel like home, bringing posters and collectibles from different pieces of media I enjoy. The blinds are closed, blocking the light sure, but also separating the trailer from the set.

Luckily, I also brought some string lights to hang across the ceiling. I don't know if I could handle the harsh florescent lights my entire time here.

I take a moment to try to take control of my breathing, doing the breathing exercises I've been instructed since I was little.

I'm interrupted with knocking on the door I'm leaning on. I stand to open the door to find Jenna Ortega on the other side. I still can't believe I'm seeing her in person and on talking terms.

Well, if I ever actually try to talk to her that is.

"Hey, I just wanted to check on you. It seemed like something was wrong." Her worried yet genuine glance meets mine.

"I'm- I don't know." I cut myself off to stop myself from lying, biting my bottom lip.

Jenna looks past me for a moment. "Can I come in?"

I nod, opening the door more and taking a step back. Jenna walks past me, she's wearing this nice perfume that fills the scentless trailer.

She looks around, admiring the decorations. "I like the string lights, I can't handle the florescent lights they use in these."

I close the door before approaching the built in couch. "Thanks, I actually wasn't aware of them until I got here. Luckily, I brought them from home by chance."

Jenna turns, taking the seat next to me. "Do you wanna talk about what's wrong? I understand if you don't want to."

"I-"

I cut myself off again, unsure what to say. "I don't know."

My heart is still beating to the bpm of flight of the bumblebee.

Jenna gives me a genuine smile, trying to make me feel comfortable, before glancing around the room again. Her eyes linger on the merchandise of different medias.

"How about we talk about media we like?" Her genuine gaze meeting mine. "I'll start, I really like Breaking Bad. It's kinda a guilty pleasure of mine."

My eyes slightly light up.

"I also really like Breaking Bad." I say, trying to reflect her genuineness. "I really like the character development and how much they change throughout the story."

Jenna scots a little closer. "I know right?! it's so good!" She seems so interested in the conversation.

She looks into my eyes with a smile. "Now it's your turn."

I look around the room for a moment, unsure what I should say. For a lot of my life I was told I can get annoying when I delve into my interests. It's like whenever I start talking about it I can't stop.

I don't want her to think I'm annoying, but I also don't want to tear down all the work she did to try to get me comfortable.

"I really like y/f/m, I just love the universe that they made so much and the characters." I start speaking, pausing for a moment to read Jenna's expression.

She is smiling and has this look in her eyes, like a genuine interest in what I'm talking about. My eyes feel like an open door as she looks into them.

"You can keep talking, I was listening." Her smile somehow becomes more genuine, causing a smile to creep up on my face.

For the past few minutes Jenna let me ramble about y/f/m. I soon realize I've likely been rambling for way too long "I'm sorry, I didn't realize how long I was talking." My smile fades, turning to embarrassment in an instant.

"What, no it's okay." She puts a hand on my knee comfortingly. "I was interested in what you were talking about."

I look at her eyes, her genuine eyes complimented with her genuine smile.

She is just so genuine.

"Are you sure I'm not being annoying?" I ask, insecurity laced in my voice.

She nods to me, her smile fills my heart.

I'll never get over the way she looks at me. As if she's actually interested in the conversation, interested in who I am.

I find myself looking down to the couch cushion, hiding my face. Soft gentle sobs start to escape my body, my shoulders slightly shaking.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Jenna scots closer, her hand gently grabbing my unstable shoulders.

I sniffle before getting my head up, revealing my glossy eyes and a few tears. My head feels like a boulder, trying to keep it lifted on top of my shoulders.

I shake my head with a smile. "It's stupid."

"There isn't a stupid reason to cry." Jenna says comfortingly, rubbing my shoulder with her thumb as she rests her hand there.

I look away again for a moment before meeting Jenna's gentle eyes. I open my mouth, no sound coming out as I try to decide my words before I speak. "It's just you're so nice. Most people either just let me speak, but are clearly disinterested or just flat out call me annoying."

Jenna's eyes are laced with empathy as she looks into my eyes like windows.

I sniffle before speaking again, fanning my face for moment. "And you just seem so interested and intrigued in what I'm talking about, and it just means so much and- I don't know."

She continues to rub my arm. There was a moment of silence, the only noise being my soft sobs until Jenna spoke. "I loved seeing the excitement and passion you have about y/f/m. You should talk to me more about it some time." She says with a smile.

I nod. "Yeah, I'd like that." A sniffle interrupts the middle of my sentence.

"I should probably try to calm down, I don't really want to go back outside looking like this." I motion my hands over my face, addressing my puffy eyes and tear streaked face.

Jenna breaks eye contact for a moment, finding the tv before meeting my gaze again. "How about we watch something?"

I nod, she stands and quickly finds the remote. "Before we start watching something, do you need a hug? You're allowed to say no."

I love how considerate she is.

I nod, standing up. She holds her arms out, inviting me into her arms. I put my arms around her lower back and she wraps hers around my upper back, one hand resting on the back of my head playing with my hair comfortingly. She holds me in her warm, gentle embrace for a moment before letting go.

She meets my face with a smile. "Feel better?"

I quickly nod with a smile on my face, happiness in my eyes.

"Do you have any comfort movies?" Jenna asks, finding her seat back on the couch.

I find my seat next to her. "I really like Studio Ghibli movies."

Jenna points the remote to the TV. "How about Spirited Away?"

"That sounds good to me." I say with a nod, looking at her one more time with a smile before we start the movie.

War Without Reason! War Without Reason is such a delightful theme song that represents the absolute brutality, beauty, and sadness that are the Earthmovers in Ultrakill. The Earthmovers were the strongest and most terrible machines used in the Final War, the shining star above all other machines. They are the totality of humanity's violence. The theme does them more than justice There's a amazing evil sounding yet somber piano section that fades intermittently throughout the last part of War Without Reason. Summary: You and your girlfriend go for a walk through the snow to the store to buy some items. You come across some fun things along the way.

It was the middle of winter and there were piles of snow everywhere. Staying in your warm, cosy house was probably the best decision, which you were planning to make, but your girlfriend insisted that a movie night ”needed” microwaved popcorn and that you also “needed” some hot soup to warm up with.

So you and Ryujin embarked on a journey to the supermarket. After wrapping up warm, you both started walking down the street to get to the closest store. “Ooh! Y/N look!” Her gloved hand pointed at a fluffy, white puppy playing around in the snow with its owner.

”It’s so cute!” You laughed. Whenever there was an animal near, she would get so excited. “Do you want to ask if we can pet it?” “Nah, their owner looks scary.”

As soon as she had finished her sentence, the dog’s owner shot a glare towards both of you and you grabbed her hand and bolted towards the other direction. 

After you had both stopped to catch your breath, you continued calmly walking to the store. 

“If Jesus could walk on water…” “Please don’t finish that sentence.” you said with a sigh. “Could he swim on land?” 

“You’re such a dumbass. I mean I love you, but you’re a dumbass.” “Well don’t blame me, blame Bo Burnham.” “Who?” “I saw a TikTok of a guy playing the piano while saying that.”

“Your ‘for you page’ will never fail to terrify me. I mean, one second its a video of a cat with huge eyes walking around aimlessly, and then it’ll be a subway surfers video with a horrific true crime story playing in the background.” “Don’t judge me, judge the algorithm.” She shrugged. 

Ryujin was more of the ‘silly’ type, and compared to her, you were calmer. You would usually fix up her messes and make sure she doesn’t do something stupid and in return, she’d thank you constantly and show her appreciation in more ways than one. So you had to be protective of her.

You both had finally arrived at the shop. You went in, bought some popcorn and a few other veggies for a soup that Ryujin was planning to make for dinner, and then went out. On the walk back home, your girlfriend spotted a big unfinished snowman. She ran over to it and picked up some sticks to stab into the sides to create the illusion of arms. You picked up some small stones and placed them in a vertical line on its belly for buttons. “No!” She cried out. “Hm?” “We don’t have a carrot!” “Oh no…” Ryujin had a sad look on her face and she plopped down on the floor in defeat. “Get up, you’ll get wet.” “What’s the point? The snowman just looks like a body with a baseball for a head.” 

She sighed an exasperated sigh as you thought of what to use as a nose. 

“Ryujin.” “Yeah?” “How much do you want soup for dinner on a scale of one to ten.” “Uh, five?” “How much do you want to finish this snowman on a scale of one to ten?” “Ten definitely.” 

You took a leek out of your shopping bag, ripped the green top off it and stuck the leek in the area that a carrot would go. Ryujin stood up and beamed happily. “I love him!” She tightly embraced you. “Even though he looks diseased?” “Even though he looks diseased.”

Once you had both left your creation, you noticed two kids looking up at the snowman in amazement. They began to build a second one beside it. 

“Awe, cute.” You said, walking beside Ryujin. “Not as cute as you though.” “Huh?” “You basically wasted a leek that you had bought with your money for me!” “I didn’t want you to be sad.” “Oh my god, I love you so fucking much.” 

She grabbed your hand, and you could feel how much warmer her hands were compared to yours. Apparently, through her gloves, she could feel them too. “Your hands are freezing babe.” She grabbed both of them and breathed hot air onto them.

You could feel yourself blushing, and you hoped that she wouldn’t notice and that she would just think that it was just because of the cool air. She noticed.

Headcanons

She was one of the latest arrivals of the circus. She too figured out what was going on, and was forced into the game. She was one of the coders and bug fixers. She was always so stressed and anxious about everything and Dane saw great fun in making her run around the office, like a jester for the king.

Is able to summon any entertainment prop such as juggling balls, bowling pins, confetti, ect and use them to her advantage or just for simple entertainment. She can also summon and wield comically large objects and weapons, but is not as good as Jax, in fact, she’s quite terrible, but still, it makes for a good laugh. She is a very skilled makeup artist and is able to come up with beautiful designs. She is very flexible and has incredible stamina in any activity.

She loves playing in the snow and then warming up with hot cocoa. As a kid she would always make paper snowflakes.

Can’t handle anything spicy, it makes her stomach super upset.

Had a normal childhood, it was kinda boring cuz she was an only child but at least she had normal parents and got to experience the cultures of both of her parents. She’s very good with chopsticks and has a high alcohol tolerance.

First thing I’d like to do to introduce myself is share my main playlist on Spotify. I’ve been working in it since around 2017 and it’s got almost 900 songs and counting on it. There are all sorts of genres on here, but a lot of it just tends to be songs I come across and like. It has a bit of an emphasis on the 70s and appealing basslines, but there’s stuff as recent as this year on there, tracks from video games and cartoons and stage musicals—all sorts of stuff! All Eyes On Me: Drunken Dial/Wrong Number AU. Catra is a retired musician dealing with years of abuse by her record label, Adora accidentally calls her after mixing up the digits in her friend's new phone number. Yes the title is from the Bo Burnham song. Major Themes: Abuse in a professional setting, Coming out, Transgenderism

The Day The Sun Vanished: Alien AU based on The Sun Vanished ARG. Horde Prime's forces invade the planet, taking out all sources of light to drive people out of their homes and make them easier to capture. Best friends Adora and Catra survive several weeks alone in their homes before they're force to flee into the world.

It's dangerous to go alone: Streamer AU. Adora and Catra dated and broke up five years ago after crazy fans of Adora's YouTube channel went after Catra, driving her off the Internet and across the country to escape it. Now she's remaking her online persona, and will be facing Adora again. Yes, the title is from the Legend of Zelda. This story's been described as "a love letter to video games", and that sticks with me.

Leap of Faith: In one universe, Adora is Spider-Woman, with the help of her best friend Catra. In another universe, Catra is Spider-Cat, with the help of her best friend Adora. Unfortunately, every hero has a tragic back story. Fortunately, the multi-verse has other ideas. Title is from Into The Spider-Verse, with all the chapter titles being songs from that soundtrack. MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH.

Little Wonders: Catra and Adora (who is trans but very not out as a teenager) have a relationship in high school that mysteriously ends when Catra is sent to a new foster home and never contacts Adora again. Ten years later, Catra's child walks into Adora's fifth-grade classroom. Major Themes: Transgenderism, long lost lovers, surprise you're a parent, teen pregnancy

Do you have any tips, advice, or even links to guides about writing reader-insert stories? I've been thinking about writing my own because they're so much fun to read and I think they'd work well with my fandoms, which are all video games.

HELLOOOOO!!! Yes of course I have some tips and tricks that I've learned over time!

Okay okay so first off: this is a little cheesy but write for yourself when doing reader inserts! What I mean by that is writing what you'd like based on your own experiences and preferences. Be cringe! Be free! I think what's helped me the most is that honestly I just write how I'm feeling at any given moment, yknow?

Second: don't try and force the inspiration or your muse. It'll come when you need it to! If you genuinely can't think of a way to write a plot point you could just leave it for later. I try to write in-order best I can but there's no harm in skipping a section and coming back to it!

Third: make sure the insert you're writing has chemistry with the characters your writing about! It does no good to make a blank Slate reader with no personality. It might be tempting to make the reader like that so that anyone can insert themselves but I just don't think it can be done well

Fourth: this is a highly personal preference! But I try not to use "y/n" in fics. I feel like it's used as a crutch a lot and it just breaks the immersion in the story for me. There are so many better ways to convey things than having the character just say the reader's name. This also goes for describing the reader insert with other word inserts like e/c (eye color) and h/c (hair color), etc. This may sound silly but you know that bo Burnham song that describes a singers girlfriend in incredibly vague terms? Do that but less of describing physical traits and more inner traits?

I also generally try to avoid describing hair and skin tone since I want anybody to be able to insert themselves, that includes the character touching the reader-inserts hair because I know some people don't want their hair touched, especially if it's textured hair (is that the right term? Correct me if I'm wrong please!!) Because 1- it's deeply personal to them and 2- the oils from your hand can mess up their hair I believe.

Fifth: that being saiddddd if you have a specific idea for a reader insert, go for it! We need more representation lol. That's why I usually try to keep things vague with a gender neutral reader, but I do dip into transmasculine reader stuff a lot more as of late. Thats when you can get more specific with physical appearance, like if your reader insert has top surgery scars or something. I'd be more than happy to elaborate more in a separate ask if you want advice for writing gender-neutral reader explicit scenes!
