At some point in the past he/she/they have lost use and function to a part of himself/herself/themselves. But through study of advanced technology and the help of those who have already done so he/she/they have replaced it with an advanced prosthetic replacement. Without the eye they had decreased depth perception. It was built for them by humans and aliens who were inventors, scientists, engineers. Losing your eye is fairly easy in a world filled with technology and magic. These injuries take full effect when they come out of the induced berserker rage once these chemicals wear off. They have to heal from the damage and pain on their own with their healing factor. The other side effect is that it leaves the user exhausted for several minutes as they run out of endurance and stamina.

Adventures in soldering

Do not click on the images to make them large. The iPhone 15 Pro Macro mode looks good at pretty much exactly Tumblr image size, and deteriorates rapidly if you look at all the pixels.

Anyway, I tried something weird. For the model railroad streetcar project that I keep talking about, I want to light up the destination display, and that works best if I can find a side-emitting LED that is at most 0.5mm but not very wide. The problem is that side emitting LEDs are rare; most standard electronic LEDs, in particular the tiny SMD ones, emit their light to the top, so I had a bit of a problem…

…until I remembered that any LED is side-emitting if you just put it on its side and solder it in like that. Which was amazingly basically no problem at all (note: Requires at least cheap precision ESD pliers and a binocular microscope and some experience). The LED has size 0402, which means 0.04 inches long and 0.02 inches wide, or in reasonable terms, a millimetre long and half a millimetre wide (and about as tall). There's a picture with the standard cent coin for scale, but all of that is very tiny.

I am happy to report that this worked on the first try, and I managed to not drop any LEDs or resistors, which goes to show: Soldering is a thing you get better at through practice. I certainly used to think I was no good at it just a couple of years ago.

As for the circuit board, I designed this a while ago specifically to challenge myself. I did manage to solder in the 0201 resistors, but I didn't have any 0201 LEDs, and now that I do have them, I have been too scared to use them yet with their weird contacts on the rear instead of sides.

By itself, this is functionally useless, but it means that I will be able to use this technique for the streetcar project. Next time I'll try taking better pictures, though.

Their fingers traced over the side window, mapping, almost, the condensation that had built up amid the growing temperature differences, of that humid summer air pressing against cool glass. An attempt at a grounding sensation, perhaps, but what had anchored them most was the realization that they’d been sitting in this hulking box of a car with someone who could very well be a stranger.

And it’s what they were still thinking about even as Terry was making some attempt at small talk while leading them to a cabin they’d called their own. “I know it suits your practice. I just struggle to see how it suits you,” they added, though their words carried no real detestable inflection, only curiosity.

Their steps became increasingly measured before finally casting their gaze onto his figure with the quiet intensity of a scientist examining a specimen under a microscope—or a bird-watcher, examining a lifer through binoculars. Even now, hundreds of miles removed from the city, with no high society events to attend or endure, Saul Weissberg was himself, just the way Terry—no, Katie—had pictured him. He, who had always worn the clothes that hung on him just right, like he’d woken up, clad himself in this suit of armor, and took it off when he fell asleep.

“You feel displaced, somehow,” they commented, frankly, before lifting their shoulders into a shrug. “But I guess it’s as you said. Not a lot of people want to give up Manhattan for the Midwest.”

The forest grew thicker and quieter as they’d walked on. At this distance, nestled among the trees, and with the dark grain of its timber, their log cabin looked almost an extension of the forest. As they closed in, however, the picture became clearer, more corporeal. Of the the dark-paneled, east- and north-facing windows that Terry had installed to make way for consistent light throughout the day; and the bright, red door, flanked by two lanterns that remained unlit.

“I’d have liked it even more remote, but I’m afraid I cannot suck out all the marrow of life just yet.” Living in solitude was a luxury best left to the poets of this world, and anyway, it wasn’t like they’d hated people, much. Just that it felt strange to navigate their world so consistently. But, quietude? That was achievable. It came in the form of a cabin that had held no visitors save for the few people in Blue Harbor whose light they let in. His next words sounded suspiciously like concern, though Terry deemed it more likely that Saul was just hoping not to run into them again. The latter was rather amusing to think about, and their lips curled slightly upward, near imperceptible. “I’m used to the cold, and I have a fireplace. I’d be all set for the year, really, except hunting and foraging are not two things that I have in my skillset just yet,” Terry deadpanned, with a quiet conviction of someone who just might try to learn them.

As they reached the door, Terry unzipped their messenger bag in search for the keys to the cabin, only to reveal a chaotic mess. After sifting through the jumble of items inside their messenger bag, Terry finally extracted the keychain out, and similarly took themselves out of that empty pang of a memory. “You should do it with him. I don’t know, he might like it,” they added, slotting in the keys into their respective locks, of those wonderful mechanisms clicking into place.

Swinging the cabin door wide, Terry stopped abruptly in their steps and glanced back towards Saul.

“My tools, please,” they held out their hand, before issuing another invitation themselves, “hm, and do you want one drink for the road? I don’t want to hear you complaining that you’ve schlepped all the way over here without giving you something in return.”

a full academic year! wonderful. any hopes of terry just sticking around for the summer were permanently dashed. though they already spoke of their plans to stay in blue harbor for an indefinite amount of time, he had a brief belief that they were probably only going to stay as long as micah did. and in their son’s case, micah had made uncommitted references to leaving once he finished out law school, so saul assumed that was just until the summer session of bhu ended. he tried to reason with himself to spend any moment of free time with his son while he could, but micah usually seemed to disappear at the work day’s end and their conversations were so regrettably stilted. maybe with terry staying until next spring, micah would stay, too, and saul could have more time to connect with their son.

“well, congrats.” despite his irritation that they had come to blue harbor in the first place, a lectureship was something to celebrate, and professionalism was a virtue in saul’s mind. he could appreciate a career move, even if it brought them closer to him than ever before. he gave a sidelong glance, one brow quirking. “birds?” illinois had plenty of those, he supposed, though probably not any more than new york. whatever. personally, he never noticed avians unless to curse them for shitting all over his lexus. he did wonder how birds and architecture were meant to mix. was this lectureship not for architecture, their chosen profession? again, it occurred to him how little he actually knew terry. even in the years freshly after their divorce, tamara interacted with them more than he did, so he only learned what his first wife was up to from his second.

silence overtook the car once again, so he leaned forward towards the touch screen and turned on the radio—104.5 harbor fm filled the air, playing some song he didn’t recognize (maybe that taylor swift girl phoebe was always talking about?), but he didn’t care because it kept him from hearing his own breathing or the sound of the tires rolling forth. the roads gradually changed from paved tar to rockier, older streets, until they eventually turned into dirt and gravel. following their prompting to turn, it wasn’t but a few minutes before they instructed him to stop. saul shot them a dubious look before he put the car into park and shut off the engine. terry didn’t give him much of a chance to protest, but what was he to say? fuck no, walk back yourself, i need a stiff drink right about now? he exited the car after them, slightly pouting as he jogged lightly to catch up.

an ex-husband, an ex-wife, and a remote cabin in the midwestern wilderness. he had to wonder how many thrillers started out with a premise just like that, or even real life murder cases. there was a sudden flash of memory in his mind of watching a woman scorned: the betty broderick story with his college roommate; they considered themselves too serious and scholarly for something like tv movies back then, but they had spent most of their sunday nights on the couch after raucous friday and saturday nights, nursing hangovers and trying to cram in three days worth of studying. they’d smoke some weed and laze about on the couch and talk about girls while some trashy movie or supermarket sweep played on their tiny tv—fuck, he hadn’t thought about any of that in forever! he was struck by the sudden nostalgia, but assumed terry’s presence had something to do with it. no matter how many years passed, she could still make him feel twenty-one. in any case, despite how angry they were with him for most of micah’s life, he doubted they were angry enough to murder him.

well, maybe that’s exactly what every murdered ex-husband thought about their ex-wives until right before they murdered them…

still, even with all of the heartache between them (mainly caused by saul, but not all), he trusted terry well enough. if they had any plans to kill him, he doubted they would’ve waited until their son was nearly thirty to strike. terry broached a new topic before he had any more time to consider their murderous intentions, mentioning the size of his office. his nostrils flared slightly. though he doubted they meant it as some sort of dig, he was highly sensitive at the moment and he had been proud of his office, damn it. the brick building had once been the town’s bank for some time in the thirties and saul took that as a good omen—money was to be made in that building, and money was exactly what he had earned in his three years leasing the space. “it suits the needs of my practice.” saul answered diplomatically, hands clasping behind his back as they walked towards the cabin.

he had the errant thought that their cabin looked like something george washington would’ve grown up in—maybe lincoln was a better comparison, it being in illinois and all—and differed a lot from saul’s own home in oak gardens. terry’s home, at least from the façade, was rustic and woodsy, with an air of simplicity; his bungalow was, like everything he owned, a symbol of his wealth with its expensive address and spacious, sleek interiors, but it served a basic purpose. it housed his belongings and his cats, and it was where he laid his head at night, but held nothing more. if he hadn’t been so materialistic, he might’ve been happy living in a shit box apartment, or sleeping on the couch in his office, but he was materialistic. anyway, in his opinion, simple was just another word for boring, and why have money at all if you weren’t going to spend it?

“hm, well, not a lot of people want to give up manhattan for the midwest.” it took a lot of convincing for thalia to get him to move to her hometown, and he doubted either of them expected him to stay post-divorce. it was the sunk-cost fallacy, mainly, though it wasn’t such a fallacy in saul’s case; he had a multi-year lease on his office and spent a lot of money to buy his home. it would cost more to abandon blue harbor than it would to move back to manhattan—besides, he hadn’t completely burnt his bridges, but it would take a lot out of him to return home with his tail between his legs. his firm was thankfully successful, but the market was much smaller in suburban illinois. fear of failure was part of the reason why he never tried to start his own firm out from under wlrk. (that, and it was better to be in wlrk’s employ than their competition.) he was slightly impressed terry was able to recall his old firm’s full name, though. “i guess i hadn’t asked nicely enough.” his protégé, berenice, had almost been convinced, but ultimately couldn’t understand why anyone would willingly move to fucking illinois; saul could’ve sworn she cried on the day he said goodbye, but knew she’d deny it if he pointed it out, so he just placed a kiss on her blonde hair and told her to mow ‘em all the fuck down in his stead.

arriving at the threshold of their home, saul surveyed the area. “kind of remote, no?” the greenness of the foliage around them proved that it was the beginning of summer, but too much nature tended to make him feel a little uneasy. it was the unpredictability of it, maybe. anything could be hiding the woods, like bears and mountain lions. he didn’t know if illinois had either of those animals, but still, anything could be watching and waiting. at least in the city you could often see the guy brandishing the knife before he tried to rob you. he turned back to terry, “do you plan to live out here the whole year? the winters are brutal here, you know.”
