From a earlier post gillows dining table restored now with better photographs,
Every antique furniture enthusiast has heard of the name Gillows, due to the very high standard of craftsmanship and unique design of the pieces of furniture they constructed. Robert Gillow was the founder of Gillows and began cabinet making and finishing furniture from 1731 onwards after he had finished his apprenticeship as a joiner and cabinet maker. He actually became a Freeman of Lancaster in the year 1728 and went into business partnership with George Haresnape. He had two sons who joined him in his business Richard and Robert. These two sons expanded the business to London to where many of the wealthiest buyers lived and this is where the firm quickly got recognized to be one the best cabinet makers of their time. In the 1740s, Gillows chartering ships to import mahogany from the west indies and Jamaica and this is why the timber used was of such good quality as it was old slowly grown solid woods, woods you cannot see in today’s marketplace.
Gillows not only used timbers such as solid mahogany, but unusual veneers and painted designs such as japanning. They often made upholstered chairs, so had their own upholsterers and cabinetmakers.
Amazingly not only did the produce there own fantastic designs but they also used other well known designs such as Chippendale, Sheraton and Hepplewhite. They also were creators of unique furniture like the trou-madame, a ladies version of a billiard table. It invented the extending telescopic dining table, the revolving top library table and secretaire drawers.
The Davenport desk was one of their most famous inventions, a small ladies desk first produced for captain Davenport. Gillows also made linen presses, chest of drawers, small occasional tables all the way to coffins. This lead to them becoming one of the richest families in England of the time.
The firm continued as Gillows until the early 1900s. They had overtime diversified to offer the complete interior design for your home from furniture, metalwork, stained glass, wallpaper, upholstery bespoke pieces including cabinet work for some larger homes, Libraries and offices.
Towards the late Victorian era finances were becoming difficult with the new influx of mass produced furniture and so they joined together with Waring of Liverpool. In 1903 Waring took over Gillows, and the brand Waring & Gillow was borne. They diversifies again into not only quality furniture but also the luxury ships liner market. This went on for quite a few years but it didn’t last long enough as the market place changed again and unfortunately the company went bankrupt. It was then taken over by Maple & Co, to become Maple, Waring and Gillow, three major cabinet makers throughout history joined together from large greatness down to a small firm but it was not to last.
What to look out for when searching for a genuine Gillows piece of furniture.
Unfortunately a very large portion of Gillows furniture was not stamped so you see many pieces associated to Gillows, due to the style, and design. The Gillows stamp can sometimes be seen under table tops, on the top edges of drawers, on the back legs of chairs or sometimes the signature would be written in pencil under drawer linings by the cabinet makers of the firm. You can look in the Gillows books to see the names of cabinet makers to reference with their signatures. The earliest marks were in the form of a printed label ‘Gillow and Taylor’ and this is very rare to find as they would rip or fall off over time. ‘Gillows Lancaster’ stamp was seen from the 1780s up to around the 1850s/60s, when it was changes to ‘Gillow’. In the 1860s, the mark consisted of a capital L, and a serial number with Gillows Lancaster could be seen. Late Victorian pieces produced the stamp ‘Gillow & Co’ and then Waring & Gillow along with a small brass plate. sometimes it can be seen on brass fittings such as locks.

In a time of unprecedented change and uncertainty, these hotels are still making the everyday extraordinary, and taking the many challenges they have faced this year in their stride.

In contrast to previous years, this year several of the awards were voted for by a panel of experts from the worlds of luxury, travel, wellbeing and cuisine – Simon Leadsford (Publisher, Condé Nast Traveller), Katy Simpson (CEO, Noble Isle), Michelin-starred chef Dominique Crenn, Carol Duval-Leroy (Owner, Champagne Duval-Leroy), Gary Allen (Managing Director, Luxury Travel Media) and Gisele Orellano (Co-Founder, Hermana Creatives).

Furniture Upholstery Styles Definitions And Applications
Image by/from Benjamin D. Esham (bdesham)
Upholstery is the work of providing furniture, especially seats, with padding, springs, webbing, and fabric or leather covers. The word upholstery comes from the Middle English word upholder, which referred to an artisan who held up their goods. The term is equally applicable to domestic, automobile, airplane and boat furniture, and can be applied to mattresses, particularly the upper layers, though these often differ significantly in design. A person who works with upholstery is called an upholsterer. An apprentice upholsterer is sometimes called an outsider or trimmer. Traditional upholstery uses materials like coil springs (post-1850), animal hair (horse, hog and cow), coir, straw and hay, hessians, linen scrims, wadding, etc., and is done by hand, building each layer up. In contrast, today’s upholsterers employ synthetic materials like dacron and vinyl, serpentine springs, and so on.
Upholder is an archaic term used for “upholsterer”, but it appears to have a connotation of repairing furniture rather than creating new upholstered pieces from scratch (cobbler vs. cordwainer).
In 18th-century London, upholders frequently served as interior decorators responsible for all aspects of a room’s decor. These individuals were members of the Worshipful Company of Upholders, whose traditional role, prior to the 18th century, was to provide upholstery and textiles and the fittings for funerals. In the great London furniture-making partnerships of the 18th century, a cabinet-maker usually paired with an upholder: Vile and Cobb, Ince and Mayhew, Chippendale and Rannie or Haig.
In the US, Grand Rapids, Michigan and Hickory, North Carolina are centers for furniture manufacture along with Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire (England) and many of the best upholsterers can still be found there. Nottinghamshire is also home to Webs training Ltd, a furniture training company that specialises in training apprentices in the furniture manufacturing industry. These artisans continue to create or recreate many antique and modern pieces of furniture.
Furniture re-upholstery continues to thrive in the UK with several businesses small and large providing these services.
Traditional upholstery is a craft which evolved over centuries for padding and covering chairs, seats and sofas, before the development of sewing machines, synthetic fabrics and plastic foam. Using a solid wood or webbed platform, it can involve the use of springs, lashings, stuffings of animal hair, grasses and coir, wools, hessians, scrims, bridle ties, stuffing ties, blind stitching, top stitching, flocks and wadding all built up by hand.
In the Middle Ages, domestic interiors were becoming more comfortable and upholstery was playing an important part in interior decoration. The decorations consisted mainly of what we would now consider as “soft furnishings”, though there were simple platforms of webbing, canvas or leather for stools, chairs and elaborately decorated coverings that already demonstrated the rudimentary beginnings of upholstered furniture. By the beginning of the 17th century chair seats were being padded, but this form of upholstery was still fairly basic. All sorts of stuffings from sawdust, grass, feathers, to deer, goat or horsehair were used, although in England the Livery Company forbade the use of goat and deer hair and imposed fines for misdemeanors. The stuffing was heaped on a wooden platform and held in place with a decorative top fabric and nails. This produced a simple dome shape sloping towards the seat. Only towards the end of the 17th century did upholsterers start to develop the techniques that would distribute and shape the stuffing into more controlled shapes. Curled horsehair was being used more consistently for stuffing that was easier to hold in place with stitches in twine that were developed from saddlery techniques. Thus layers of stuffing could be distributed evenly and secured to stay in place. On a basic level, squab cushions were made more stable by using tufting ties. Stuffed edge rolls appeared on seat fronts providing support for cushions to be retained and later for deeper stuffing to be held in place under a fixed top cover.:p12
What we now think of as “classic” upholstery shapes and techniques flourished in the 18th century. Frames of elegant line and proportion were sympathetically matched by expertly executed upholstery. By now, the upholsterers’ technical knowledge meant that stuffing’s could be controlled along upright and sloping lines, giving new levels of comfort and a simply stated elegance. Later in the century, the border was replaced by a single piece of linen or scrim taken over the stuffed seat and tacked to the frame. At the same time the locked blind stitch and top-stitching combination (pulling the side and top surfaces together and bringing the stuffing up to make a firm top edge) had evolved.:p15
In the Victorian era, fashions of opulence and comfort gave rise to excesses of stuffing and padding. Mass production techniques made upholstered furniture available in large quantity to all sections of society. The availability of better-quality steel springs and the development of lashing techniques enabled upholstery to be built up on seats, backs and arms quite independently of the frame shape. Stuffings became even more complex, edges became elaborately shaped into rolls and scrolls and fabrics were folded into soft padded shapes by means of buttoning.:p12
An automotive upholsterer, also known as a trimmer, coach trimmer or motor trimmer, shares many of the skills required in upholstery, in addition to being able to work with carpet.
The term coach trimmer derives from the days when car frames were produced by manufacturers and delivered to coach builders to add a car body and interior trimmings. Trimmers would produce soft furnishings, carpets, soft tops, and roof linings often to order to customer specifications. Later, trim shops were often an in-house part of the production line as the production process was broken down into smaller parts manageable by semi-skilled labor.
Many automotive trimmers now work either in automotive design or with aftermarket trim shops carrying out repairs, restorations or conversions for customers directly. A few high-quality motor car manufacturers still employ trimmers, for example, Aston Martin.
This is the type of upholstery work offered to businesses. Examples would be restaurant seating consisting of booth seats, dining room chairs, bar stools, etc. Also churches, including but not limited to pews and chairs for the congregation, hospitals and clinics consisting of medical tables, chiropractic tables, dental chairs, etc. Also common to this type of upholstery would be lobby and waiting-area seating. Upholstered walls are found in some retail premises.
Upholsterers may be called upon to repair or replace seating, cushions, cabin furnishings, headliners and even carpeting on boats.
Marine upholstery differs in that one has to consider dampness, sunlight and hard usage. There are many sources for marine grade vinyls such as Spradling and Morbern and they come in hundreds of colors and styles now.
Each style of marine grade vinyl is rated according to cold crack, rub counts, and mold resistance. Stainless-steel hardware such as staples, screws must be used to prevent rust and early break down of hardware and fasteners. The newest products for fastening vinyl in marine applications are Tenara thread and Monel staples. Any wood used must be of marine quality.
Usually a high-resiliency, high-density plastic foam with a thin film of plastic over it is used to keep out water that might get by the seams. Closed-cell foam is used on smaller cushions which can, sometimes, double as flotation devices.

Sometimes you’ve just gotta get away from it all. Living in the city, you get used to the noise, the crowds, and the traffic. As much as I love cities, it’s a good idea to take a break from them, too. Well, if you live in and you’re looking for a road trip from Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener, London, or any other city, I’ve got a plan for you. Head straight to Perth County, for a peaceful getaway where you certainly won’t have to deal with noise, crowds, or traffic.
Where is Perth County? A Perth County Map
Not to be confused with the town of Perth, , Perth County is a large land mass just west of Kitchener, Cambridge, and Guelph. It’s also north of Woodstock and London. If you’re planning a road trip from Toronto, Perth County is about 1 hour 30 minutes or 2 hours from the city, depending on where you’re headed.
Perth County has four townships or municipalities within it: North Perth, Perth East, Perth South, and West Perth. In this article, I’ll organize these places to visit in for the weekend under these four geographical categories to make your trip planning a little easier. Here’s a map to not only show you where Perth County is located, but also to provide the details of every stop I made on my trip.
Perth County: Perth East
At the heart of Perth East lies the village of Shakespeare, known as Perth County’s antique capital. While you’ll definitely want to hit up the shops in town, there are also opportunities to sample local produce, pints, and pristine nature.
Shakespeare Brewing Company
Who loves visiting local craft breweries? The village of Shakespeare is home to Shakespeare Brewing Company, owned by husband and wife team, Ayden and Katie. On their travels through Europe, the couple stayed at an old English farm with a microbrewery where Ayden learned how to brew beer. Before long, they started Shakespeare Brewing and the rest is history!
Staying true to the region, their beer is brewed with locally grown ingredients like barley and 100% grown hops. Shakespeare Brewing supports local agriculture, farmers, and small businesses, taking the concept of “locally made” to the next level.
Keeping with the Shakespearean theme, their craft beers are all named for animals and feature those animals wearing Olde English attire. The art on each tall boy can is quite visually stunning. While you should definitely take some cans home with you, I recommend sampling some freshly brewed beer on site. Ordering a flight is a great way to try a few beers to discover your favorites.
I tried the Reckless Rooster (an Pale Ale with a citrus hop aroma), the Bumbling Bear (a blueberry wheat beer) and a special one only available on tap, the Strawberry Vanilla beer. Ayden is always crafting new varieties, so there will always be rotating flavors to try every time you visit. My favorite of the three was the Bumbling Bear because I’m definitely a sucker for the fruity wheat beers.
Exploring the Village of Shakespeare
Though the village of Shakespeare is pretty small, it’s one of my new favorite places to go in . Its packed with unique shops with intriguing gifts and things for many interests. A stop in Shakespeare is worth the road trip from Toronto. Its main street has several diverse shops with a main focus on antiques. You can easily spend a couple of hours here browsing the shelves of enticing finds. Here are a few of the best shops in Shakespeare.
Harry Ten Shilling
Harry Ten Shilling is an adorable tea shop in the heart of Shakespeare. If you aren’t able to stay for afternoon tea, browse this store with several Instagrammable rooms and displays featuring local handicrafts, bath and body products, jewelry, gifts and more.
The British Touch
The British Touch features all things British, whether you’re seeking your gifts, tea, or your favorite grocery items that are only found in the UK. As we had recently visited Scotland this past year, I had a craving for some Irn Bru and couldn’t resist picking up a few cans of it!
Land and Ross Antiques
Land and Ross Antiques is packed with high quality antiques and treasures. They also specialize in custom furniture design and restoration. You’ll find many classic and rare items over a century old that will surely add a special flair to your home. Make sure to say hello to their adorable dog, too!
The Quilt Place
Are you into quilting or sewing? You won’t want to miss stopping by The Quilt Place! They have reams upon reams of fabric for every project, as well as hundreds of quilting books and patterns. Take a peek upstairs to see a few bedrooms adorned with beautiful quilts for extra inspiration. When making the road trip from Toronto to Perth County and Shakespeare, I’m certain that many quilting enthusiasts make an extra trip here as I haven’t seen a store quite like this one.
Shakespeare Conservation Area
After browsing the shops of Shakespeare, drive a minute up the road to the Shakespeare Conservation Area to soak up the sights and sounds of glorious nature. The Shakespeare Pond is a great spot for a picnic beneath its shaded pavilion or at a picnic table beside the water.
Then, take a stroll around the pond to go bird watching, get some exercise, or to simply snap a few photos. I managed to meet a couple of locals who were also having a picnic lunch. It was wonderful to engage in a great chat with them. After making the road trip from Toronto to the country, I thoroughly enjoyed this laid back approach to the day by taking stroll at the pond and leisurely chatting to area residents.
TIP: Be sure to bring your sunscreen and your bug repellent while going for a walk at the Shakespeare Conservation Area. It’s always a good idea to protect your skin from the sun and the bugs. Don’t forget to bring your refillable water bottle!
TNT Berries
TNT Berries is a sea buckthorn and blueberry farm where you’ll find the freshest and tastiest berries. They have a blueberry farm where you can pick your own berries when they’re in season (generally around mid-July to August). The blueberries were only starting to come into season when I visited. They tasted amazing right off the vine.
Have you heard of sea buckthorn berries? They’re tasty little berries that are a little bit tart. They have high levels of vitamin C, antioxidants, 18 amino acids, omega 3-6-9 and 7, beta carotene, and over 190 phytonutrients! You can add them to smoothies, jams and jellies, or even as an extra flavor in your water bottle.
When I visited TNT Berries, the sea buckthorn berries were still green. When ripe, they turn a beautiful shade of orange. I recommend that you purchase some frozen berries from Nadia as they’re quite delicious when consumed frozen. When making the road trip from Toronto to the rural communities of Perth County, you’ll want to visit their farm gates and farm shops to sample farm fresh produce.
Organic Oasis
Organic Oasis is an organic farm and farm store, selling unique and locally produced goods. Owners Jessie and Adam Young come from a long line of farmers, and they continue to explore innovative farming methods for better yields. I went on a guided tour of the farm, including soaking up the breathtaking views from “Happy Hog Lookout.”
While the farm has animals like pigs and chickens, my main interest lies in their fruits and veggies, as I don’t consume animal products. They have large patches of land for fruits and vegetables in the summer, as well as large greenhouses to extend the growing season. There’s even flower gardens and spaces to encourage Monarch butterflies to survive and thrive.
The Organic Oasis farm store features locally grown produce straight from their farm, and it’s all 100% organic. You’ll notice signs and labels denoting the products and produce grown on site. There are a few things like avocados and citrus that can’t be grown in ; for the most part, everything comes directly from their farm or nearby local farms.
Where to Eat: Dave’s Diner in Sebringville
Dave’s Diner in Sebringville is a favorite restaurant among locals. I found a couple of items on the menu that were vegan and completely contrasted one another: a healthy garden salad and a big plate of French fries. It’s good to have a little bit of both healthy and not so healthy, right?
Regardless of what you order, you need to try their fries. They’re definitely some of the most delicious fries I’ve ever had! After chatting briefly with Dave, I discovered that he has a secret blend of spices that make those fries extra special. I asked if he could share his secret recipe with me, but he’s definitely keeping this one under wraps. You’ll have to head to Dave’s Diner to sample the fries and let me know what you think!
Perth County: North Perth
It’s time to swing up to North Perth for a taste of rural living in Perth County . North Perth has plenty of locally owned businesses in town, as well as a vibrant sense of community. Whether you take a stroll through town or take part in a local festival, you’ll enjoy the best of both worlds as urban meets rural. When making the road trip from Toronto or other nearby cities to Perth County, Listowel is a fantastic destination for exploring a town steeped in rural traditions.
Goats on 86
Goats on 86. This one is wildly popular with anyone traveling through the area. Just search for the hashtag and you’ll see what I mean!
Goats on 86 allows a local family to share their love for their pet goats and alpacas with the community. The animals live in a very large yard by their home. You’re welcome to pay the goats and alpacas a visit anytime you like. There are dispensers with corn if you’d like to feed them; make sure you don’t feed them anything but this corn. Though you have to pay a small fee for the corn, the family donates that money to a local charity.
Yarn Factory Outlet store for all the knitters and crocheters in the crowd. As you walk away from the Yarn Factory Outlet shop, you’ll see a couple of walls with spectacular street art / murals to admire.
When I visited Listowel, it was right in time for the 163rd Listowel Agricultural Fair. There was a tractor parade rolling through town, a classic midway, and an agricultural hall with various ribbons assigned to talented members of the community. I wandered through the fair for a slice of country living. It was also super cute to overhear some local children discovering that they won a prize for an art or craft project.
Where to Eat: Cowan’s Community Fresh
Cowan’s Community Fresh in Listowel is an independent, small business focusing on local and organic whole foods. They support local farmers, growers and producers in Perth County and . This small grocery store is very vegan-friendly with many vegan grocery and pantry items. There’s always a vegan prepared salad or meal available on hand. I highly recommend trying the avocado salad, which comes with a side of cashew cheese as a topping. Yum!
Perth County: Perth South
Perth South has an assortment of activities and attractions. Looking for something sporty? Head to River Valley Golf (which also doubles as a snow tubing attraction in the winter). Looking for history and culture? The Stratford Perth Museum has rotating exhibits highlighting local celebrities and lifestyle. And there’s lots of locally produced food in this farming region, of course. If you’re thinking about southwestern day trips or weekend getaways, don’t miss these spots in Perth South.
McCully’s Hill Farm
McCully’s Hill Farm is a farm shop that I really wish that I had closer to home. They specialize in homemade preserves, maple products, baked goods, prepared meals, and garden fresh produce. I was thrilled to see a vast assortment of pickles, flavors of relish, unique types of jam, fresh salsa, maple mustard, and many more drool-worthy products.
After chatting with the owner, Dennis, I could see his passion for his market fresh farm operation, as well as creating innovative products for those living in the region. In addition to the farm and farm shop, McCully’s operates school tours for children, a fall harvest festival, and a maple syrup festival in the winter. It seems as though there’s always something fun and entertaining happening at McCully’s! It’s definitely one of my top picks for foodie places to visit in southern , especially if you’re planning a trip to Perth County.
The Stratford Perth Museum
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I arrived at the Stratford Perth Museum. As I pulled into the driveway, I noticed that the museum was situated inside a historic home with a massive extension attached to it. What treasures would I find inside the Stratford Perth Museum? As it turns out, this museum has a slice of local life that suits many interests and tastes, including music, the arts, local history, oddities, war history, and so much more.
What makes the Stratford Perth Museum so intriguing? Their exhibits are continually rotating so the museum always stays fresh. You can visit year after year, enjoying entirely new exhibitions. There’s really so much that Perth County has to offer, and the Stratford Perth Museum emphasizes new details and aspects of that local history time and time again. For instance, there are ongoing exhibits illustrating Stratford’s Shakespearean Festival, including artifacts, props and costumes. The region’s railway history and glimpses into Perth County from the early 1800s are also prominently featured.
However, Perth County is a very important place in terms of Canadian music history. Did you know that three prominent Canadian musicians from Stratford and Perth County performed at the Woodstock festival? This exhibit includes personal stories and memorabilia from one of the most memorable and important music festivals in history.
And then there’s the exhibit that has drawn thousands upon thousands of visitors to the Stratford Perth Museum from all over the world. Justin Bieber: Steps to Stardom highlights Bieber’s humble beginnings, busking on the steps of the local Avon Theater through his rise to fame. There are hundreds of items, many donated from Justin Bieber’s family or the Biebs himself, including awards, drum sets, clothing, shoes, and even library cards. And in case you were wondering, there are even opportunities for selfies!
Where to Eat: River Valley Golf
By summer, it’s a beautiful golf course. By winter, it’s a snow tubing adventure park. River Valley Golf certainly has all four seasons covered for fun things to do in Perth County. Even if you aren’t partaking in a round of golf, their restaurant has a great selection of appetizers, burgers, and sandwiches. I ordered a veggie burger with a side of fries that was super yummy.
Perth County: West Perth
In West Perth, I explored the town of Mitchell. It’s home to a bustling historic downtown with many shopping options, as well as natural attractions with many parks, trails, and wetlands. If you’re taking a road trip from Toronto and you love adorable towns, you won’t want to miss a stop in Mitchell.
Shop at Jillian’s
Jillian’s is an absolute gem of a home decor store in Perth County. People travel from all over to shop at this boutique, and I can see why they come from far and wide. Jillian’s is such a beautiful store with home furnishings and decorations that I haven’t seen anywhere else. They have dozens of various displays featuring their one of a kind items to suit all styles. From colorful cushions to artsy pots and planters, you’ll be sure to find that special something that would look right at home in your home. It’s one of the best places to go in for home decor.
West Perth Wetlands
After you take a little walk around downtown Mitchell, make your way to the West Perth Wetlands, also in Mitchell. These 65 acres are a total paradise for nature lovers, including hikers, walkers, photographers, and bird watchers. There are 3 rehabilitated ponds, 10km of walking trails, and over 4700 different kinds of plants. A portion of the trails are accessible for wheelchairs, scooters, and baby strollers, while other sections are a little bit more rugged. When you enter the wetlands from the parking lot, there’s a fabulous wooden viewing platform where you can soak up the beautiful surroundings.
Most importantly, this is a natural habitat for many species of bird species and wildlife. You can find over 200 different species of breeding and migratory birds at the West Perth Wetlands. If you’re lucky, you might be able to spot some of them! The stunning nature in Perth County is totally worth the road trip from Toronto, Hamilton, and other cities.
Where to Stay in Perth County
My top pick for where to stay in Perth County is the Forest Motel, just outside of Stratford. I had an incredible two nights’ stay. This motel is a destination in itself for its natural surroundings and amenities alone. It’s the best place to stay when you’re taking a road trip from Toronto to Perth County for the weekend, a few days, or longer.
At the Forest Motel, you’ll stay in a warm and cozy private room with an en suite bathroom, flat screen TV, complimentary Wi-Fi, fridge, microwave, and Keurig coffee maker. Breakfast is complimentary each morning, too.
Everyone who stays at the Forest Motel receives free access to the property and its activities, including 32 acres of forest and trails, a private lake with canoeing and kayaking (I even saw a blue heron while kayaking!), lakeside bonfires, BBQ grills, and snowshoeing in the winter. The staff are lovely and very welcoming, and you might also be welcomed by the resident swan family, too! If you’d like to meet the swans, they waddle up around 5:00pm each day for their dinner, and I was lucky enough to arrive just as they were quacking for their meal.
Be sure to book your stay at the Forest Motel for amazing service, a comfortable stay, and to take advantage of the complimentary outdoor adventures. I chatted with guests who return to this accommodation year after year for one of the best southern getaways. If you’re looking for places to visit in for the weekend, plan your trip to Perth County and be sure to stay at the Forest Motel. Be sure to read more reviews by fellow travelers.

5 New Standout Hotels in London
Well established as a design capital — the famed Victoria and Albert Museum was founded in the 19th century as a design museum — London has become the world’s best hotel city.
There are the pillars of timeless elegance, like Claridge’s and The Connaught, which set the hospitality bar quite high while injecting glamour into the hotel cocktail bar and restaurant.
England’s capital also hosts upstarts like The Hoxton, which opened its first hotel in 2006 in Shoreditch, an East End neighborhood, helping to transform the district and redefine the hotel lobby as a creative hangout, aglow with laptops.
Game-changers like Chiltern Firehouse — opened in 2013, still white hot, and not just because it’s got a secret smoking room — and The Ned, the 252-room hotel and members club opened in 2017 by the founder of Soho House, continue to rewrite the rules of what hotels can be: a place to rest your head, of course, but cultural touchstones, too. That’s why The Standard chose London for its first address outside the United States — on Euston Road in a striking 1974 Brutalist building, opening officially in the fall.
In the city’s current hotel-opening boom times (the Great Scotland Yard Hotel is due late 2019), here are five standouts.
Vintry & Mercer
Named for the 14th-century merchants and traders who established this district in the City of London, this 92-room hotel is 100 percent powered by renewable energy and has a rooftop terrace, where lunch comes with views of St. Paul’s and the Shard.
Velvet headboards, leather door handles and vintage-map wallpaper give the individually designed rooms lush character; lots of plants in the public spaces create a business traveler’s bolt-hole; and Do Not Disturb, an underground speakeasy with leather banquettes and images of Zeigfield Follies girls on the walls, has its own sultry entrance set back on Garlick Hill.
Vintry & Mercer; from about $225; 19-20 Garlick Hill, City of London.
Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park
Just before a major renovation was to be unveiled last year, a fire ripped through this property, so the old-world behemoth had to be renovated again — for a total cost of $192 million. The results are shockingly luxurious and certainly not for the faint of wallet (nor for anyone with a shopping, er, problem, given the proximity to the fashion temples of Knightsbridge), but well suited to one of the few hotels on Hyde Park.
You can set your Rolex by the Royal Horse Guards riding by every morning at 10:30 on the way to the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace.
Very near Tower Bridge and the Tate Modern, this 193-room hotel is a refurbished 1905 magistrate’s court. While there’s a whiff of businessman’s hotel design in the rooms (it’s part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection), some details from the architect John Dixon Butler’s Edwardian original are intact — such as the Y-shaped central staircase.
There are cheeky allusions to the building’s history, too: a coffee table in the Orwell Suite was made from benches etched by former prisoners, a glass chandelier in the lobby is made up of tiny handcuffs, mug shots decorate the Courtroom bar and the coffee roasted on site is called — wait for it — Shakedown.
The Dixon; from about $320; 211 Tooley Street, Southwark.
Belmond Cadogan Hotel
The original Cadogan Hotel, where Oscar Wilde was arrested in 1895, was built in 1887. After a four-year, $48 million restoration, it’s now a 54-room (and suite) boutique hotel in central London with lots of exclusivity, including access to the mulberry trees and tennis courts of the private Cadogan Place Gardens.
Original design details — working fireplaces, mosaic floors, wood paneling — have been preserved, and rooms have a plush residential vibe with little sofas, intricate molding and eclectic art under recessed lighting. The hotel also landed a couple of key collaborations: with an independent bookshop, John Sandoe Books, for a small library of British literature; and with the chef Adam Handling, a 30-year-old Scottish darling of the London food scene, for its restaurant and all of its food and beverage.
Belmond Cadogan Hotel; from about $600; 75 Sloane Street, Chelsea.
The Hoxton, Southwark
A new 14-story building among the converted factories on the south side of Blackfriars Bridge, London’s third Hoxton hotel is due to open in September. The 192 rooms — designed by Ennismore Design Studio — come in five categories: Shoebox, Snug, Cosy, Roomy and Biggy, all fitted with British-made new and antique furniture.
The rooftop restaurant overlooks the Thames. Perks standard to the brand include a minibar that guests can stock with local products from the hotel’s shop (at supermarket prices) and a free breakfast bag delivered daily to the room.
A new twist: the inclusion of Working From_, a six-floor shared work space within the hotel, with 744 desks, five meeting rooms, its own entrance, a winter garden and a wellness studio with class programming curated by the every-body fitness company Refinery E9.
The Hoxton, Southwark; from about $265; 40 Blackfriars Road, South Bank.

Wooden outdoor furniture faces all types of weather conditions and this takes its toll on the appearance and stability substantially reducing the life expectancy. Stripping back and bleaching to remove weather damage and discolouration is carried out before applying a protective all weather finish that rejuvenates the wood and restores it back to its original look. Alternatively we can change the colour to create a new look for a new season.

Timeless design, new holiday rentals ready for your festive season and more, this October - Luxury villa and property for sale in Goa
Timeless design, new holiday rentals ready for your festive season and more, this October
A DREAM HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Some say it’s captivating at first sight. Others say you will get lost in its embrace the moment you arrive. Villa Capela is many things, but never the same thing twice – and it can be all yours this festive season.
Where rustic meets refined and elegance meets extravagance. All roads, the winding ones and the ones dotted with pretty little daffodils, lead to one this season—to Villa Capela. Located in a secluded part of Parra in North Goa, a spot carefully handpicked for its idyllic calm, as well as its close proximity to powdery sand beaches, popular bars and pulsating restaurants, this is where time stops, and the memorable times begin. Reminiscent of a Mediterranean fort, its doors and windows open up to a space that will take your breath away. Antique furniture, projecting balconies and quaint bridges that connect the bedrooms—and this is just the tip of the iceberg. The four-bedroom fully furnished haven features courtyards where you can bask in the sunlight, a swimming pool that spills into palm-fringed paddy fields and charming bedrooms replete with bespoke furnishings and custom designed flooring, that offer distinct views from every vantage point. Away from the sprawling living and dining room, the staircases of Villa Capela lead to one discovery after another, like the spacious terrace onto which the branches of a banyan tree have taken over. But it’s the sloping pergola where you’ll spend most of your evenings, sipping tea and watching the sun set between the hills. Here, you can get completely lost, and find exactly what you’ve been looking for. Villa Capela, now available for you to rent, is the only place to make your best memories this festive season.
TIMELESS IN A TIME OF CHAOS
While most are distracted by the fashionable and the trendy, Isprava is obsessed with the timeless, with design worthy of the ages.
Have you ever seen a picture of something from another era and thought to yourself, this could be something you could be looking at today? While glossy magazines propagate bold and contemporary design trends as well as an experimental mix of styles, Isprava appreciates classic, understated beauty that offers an everlasting appeal. Design that has a staying power. Never design that was created to be temporary. But design that was created to endure the years, and the varied style sensibilities that come in its view. Design that will outpace the fads and frenzies of a few, but captivate the attention of many for a very long time. Design that will stay as fresh and relevant today as it was yesterday and will be tomorrow. It’s neither avant-garde, fussy, ornate or opulent. It’s simple and sophisticated. It’s functional, yet not boring. It’s subtle, adaptable and belonging of its space and its environment. It features colours and materials that are traditional, the ones that have been created to outlast. It is inspired from the ages of yesteryear, from Greek architectural marvels to British heritage masterpieces—replete with strong columns, arresting statues and aged mouldings—the things that will always look good on any kind of canvas. It features natural resources and fibres—wood, stone and brick—that give a new lease of life to any kind of space, big, small or lavish. These are just a few of the indelible things that contribute to timeless design—the cornerstone of beautiful living, and the mandate Isprava swears by.
EXPERIENCE THE NILGIRIS, INSIDE-OUT
There’s something about the Nilgiris that stays with you, long after you leave. Especially when you experience Isprava’s Nilgiris, from the inside-out.
Once the summer home of the British, where age-old mountains, archaic railway tracks and quaint tea plantations reigned, today, ever more so, is the perfect setting for the 21st century vacation-seeker. But not only for its lush beauty or gleaming Blue Mountains that stand tall on the outside, but for what’s on the inside too. That is, inside an Isprava haven. There is nothing ordinary about Isprava’s Nilgiris. Drawing inspiration from the untouched beauty that surrounds, the rich culture that captivates and the abundant nature that embraces, each Isprava home is a reflection of its destination. As soon as you enter, you will be compelled to stay. The climate on the outside will beckon. But it’ll be hard to let go of the warmth Isprava’s walls bring to your homestay. Nature lovers will want to explore their surroundings. But only when they are done discovering what’s around every corner and behind every bend—design and luxury that can’t be found anywhere else. Equestrian enthusiasts will be tempted to tee off at a nearby golf retreat, but only after they lounge long enough in the indulgent luxury that Isprava offers. And while all of the Nilgiris is waiting to be discovered, inch by inch, Isprava offers you the chance to discover it, experience by experience, within its intimate embrace.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF ISPRAVA'S HEAD OF OPERATIONS - KAMINI GILL
From an art collector and antique lover to renovating Portuguese villas in Goa and now running the day to day at Isprava, frankly, like a boss, Kamini Gill’s inner most passions, and inherent talent make her a force to reckon.
Her mornings begin with a prayer of gratitude to the universe, and ask her where her heart is set on for a dream holiday home, and she quickly retorts: Florence or London. She’s brought not only her infectious personality to the Isprava field ground but also a business acumen and design sensibility that is set to take Isprava places, perhaps even Florence and London one day! In conversation with Kamini Gill...
How did Isprava find you, or you find it?
It was no accident that the path I was on for so many years led me to the doors of Isprava. I always had a passion for art, antiques and beautiful spaces. I spent many years managing my own family’s holiday homes, some of which are heritage properties which required significant restoration and renovation. After a lot of hard work, customized touches and an obsessive attention to detail, I was satisfied about ensuring an unforgettable staying experience for all my friends and family. In many ways, those three pillars hold up Isprava’s operating philosophy, and the company therefore seemed like the perfect place for me to be and do what I love doing on a much grander scale.
As head of operations, what’s usually on the agenda?
Well, everything really. The main goal is to execute the management’s unparalleled vision in a high quality, timely and cost efficient manner—so I have to be hands on with almost every aspect of the company and brand, and almost every member too. But that’s what makes my job that much more exciting. I thoroughly enjoy the process of aligning the internal team and external stake holders, from the architects and interior designers to the suppliers, vendors and contractors to ensure a highly motivated and high performance operating environment. This is what empowers me, and makes me tick.
What do you love most about the company?
It’s an extremely driven organisation with a strong collaborative culture. We here at Isprava emphasize a great deal on delivering and creating value. This is deeply institutionalized as the Chairman, Mr Darshan Shah and CEO & MD Nibhrant, personally set the tone from the top. Every employee of the company pulls in the same direction and that makes for a very fun and trusting work environment.
What’s your take on luxury in India and Isprava?
I believe the luxury space in India is still evolving. As societies become more affluent, luxury follows a certain life cycle. Initially it is about asset creation, but eventually it graduates to more experiential spending which encompasses travel, art, bespoke holiday homes if you may. That is the stage that pockets of India are now starting to reach. But it’s a space with very exciting growth prospects. As for Isprava, the final frontier of luxury for us is exclusivity. And that is the very beat of our drum—crafting highly bespoke spaces and experiences. Making each home unique to the owner’s unique taste and sensibility, often achieving the impossible blend between classic and contemporary.
What’s your design sensibility like?
It is definitely more inclined towards the vintage, but with a modern outlook and mind-set.
Walking over to your desk at Isprava, what will we see?
My diary which serves as my trusty daily planner, my laptop and a herb infused bottle of water.
What do you do to relax after a long day of work?
I like to have a hot steaming cup of coffee, and practice Buddhism.

Five design-centric eateries to dine at during NYC Restaurant Week 2017
New York's annual Restaurant Week returns this summer, offering discounts at some of the city's hottest dining spots. We've chosen five venues with the best interiors for those who appreciate both design and food.
Organised by tourism platform NYC & Company, the event has 390 participating restaurants, serving a wide variety of cuisines across the city's five boroughs.
The event is not actually constrained to seven days – foodies can take advantage of brunch, lunch and dinner deals on set menus from 24 July to 18 August 2017. Bookings can be made through the NYC Restaurant Week website.
Here are our five picks that offer both good food and great design:
Mercer Kitchen
For the restaurant at The Mercer hotel in SoHo, French designer Christian Liaigre aimed to create the atmosphere of a casual family kitchen using communal dining tables and an open cooking area.
World-renowned chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's American-influenced menu is served in the largely subterranean restaurant, which has room for 200 diners among original brick walls and wenge-wood furnishings.
99 Prince Street, SoHo
Leuca
The interior of this Southern Italian restaurant was created by Toronto-based Studio Munge, which was responsible for outfitting the entire William Vale hotel where it is located.
The space is split into two sides – the bar and casual dining area has a light, airy design, while the other features warm, wood panelling, designed to evoke an Italian country house.
111 North 12th Street, Williamsburg
Nobu Downtown
New York's Rockwell Group is behind the design of the latest branch of the Nobu chain which, like its predecessors, serves Peruvian-Japanese cuisine.
A wooden sculpture based on the brushstrokes of Japanese calligraphy spans the ceiling of the underground restaurant, above red walls, chair and banquettes.
195 Broadway, Financial District
Mission Chinese Food
This celebrated Chinese restaurant in a former nightclub is deliberately designed to be tacky.
Executive chef Angela Dimayuga commissions her many creative contacts to create ever-changing installations in the brick-lined, double-height space at the back, ranging from a sci-fi cave to an assemblage of silk and wood kites.
171 East Broadway, Chinatown
Fowler and Wells
Located in one of New York's hottest new hotels, The Beekman, Fowler and Wells was designed by London-based Martin Brudnizki to tie into his work elsewhere on the historic Temple Court building.
Its intentionally dishevelled appearance is created with antique furniture and vintage chandeliers, which complement the restored original details and stained-glass windows.
5 Beekman Street, Financial District
