coffee/matcha:
if you like coffee, best locations in the CBD are little rogue on drewery lane nearby melbourne central station, and tbh any coffee joint along flinders lane
if you don't like coffee but like matcha or houjicha, drop by little rogue or tori's on niagara lane!! puzzle coffee (there's one on swanston st and in melbourne central station) is also tasty
i've also heard good things about naau's matcha - they're off russell st but i haven't been there myself
breakfast/brunch/bakery:
if you want to try a classic melb brunch, try hardware lane! there's a few places in the laneway and it feels very melbourne
also on drewery lane is bakemono - an adorable little bakery that does amazing melonpan! but they sell out quick and get busy, so you want to get there by 10am at the latest

okay i know they opened elsewhere in australia now but LUNE is great... love the croissants....... JC patisserie boulangerie is further north but a quick train ride away - heard great things!
if you want a fun time........ hopetoun tearooms!! SOO CUTE even just the cake window is worth a look. if you want high tea you gotta book out ages in advance, but if you don't mind waiting a little they take walk ins! perfect for an afternoon pot of tea and tasty cake

soooo i love ramen so if you do too, ikkoryu fukuoka ramen is top tier! i love their yuzu ramen. hakata gensuke is good if you like chicken ramen, and shujinko ramen (rip the flinders st store) is good if you're going up elizabeth st and want affordable
mensho tokyo ramen opened recently but uhhhhh the wait has been 3 to 5 hous somedays. ITS POPULAR. ippudo in QV is probably easier and more convenient
outside of ramen, if you want more fancy fancy farmer's daughters is STELLAR. delicious food, great cocktails, mm. nice modern aussie dining. longrain nearby is also very popular!
also vaguely upmarket is chinchin - good curry! the waiters market is a place that my mum hugely recommend before shows but ive never managed to get there myself lmao.

a walk down birrarung marr is also nice, sometimes there's night markets going on by the stadiums
the docklands has some alright places, but i know less about it... but they have a ferris wheel rn! check it out!
if you wanna spend thirty or more bucks, go up the eureka tower!! tallest building, and you can get a cool view of the city. the edge experience is a little lift that sticks out the building so you can stare down through glass to the ground below. fun if you aren't afraid of heights
if you like shopping, emporium is fancy and has a MEEQ store where you can buy jellycats
you can go to the queen victoria market if you wanna.... its a classic destination after all
THE LUME is a classic experience here too rn - more exxy but if you want a fun visual experience, do it!

gewürzhaus! there's one in block arcade off collins st, i love it and the spices
not far from gewürzhaus is essensorie - they discon'd my fave handcream SOB but they have some nice things (this is all in the black arcade, same as hopetoun)
and with that, tbh check out all the arcades? they have fun things going on!! there's the block arcade, royal arcade with gog and magog, tivoli arcade... that is to say they're little indoor walkways with shops and stores, as in an arcade you walk through! they're cute
bourke st mall is worth a wander, and you can see the outside of the old post office that's now a H&M...
i know you said "things to do" but... all i do is eat mostly LMAO!!
really, the best thing to do is give yourself a day or two for the CBD. just wander, it's all a grid and easily navigable, and take advantage of the free tram zone!!!! it'll announce when it isn't so you know to touch on your myki or not, i'm not a cop.
you could also wander down to crown at night, southbank has many restaurants and also the flames outside crown fucketh severely
if you're going outside the CBD, its an hours or so drive but healesville sanctuary is soo fun.. and on the way there you can stop by kuranga nursery, it's a gorgeous little place and the paperbark cafe does a bunch of tasty meals with native flavours and bushtucker

Review: Yugen Tea Bar
Le bar à thé
You push open the doors and you are greeted by a polished bar x afternoon tea café. With its pure black minimalistic structures giving of cavern vibes, you get the feel you’re being naughty and heading to the bar a little too early. But at the same time there are pretty afternoon tea sets on the café tables tucked in the corners that look just so tempting. It may sound like a confused café but everything soon makes sense. This was not a random concept thrown out as part of the café culture in Melbourne but the beloved child of tea sommelier Thibaut Chuzeville, pastry chef John Demetrios, and culinary director Stephen Narin.
You drift towards the bar, for the solos and the curious. For every lover of drink would wish to speak to the bartenders and sommeliers to know the specials and to see the craft first hand. Behind this bar are not unique selection of gin, rum and what nots but tea. Likewise in replacement of the jigger and shaker, the bartenders here are equipped with the tetsubin, chawan, yuzamashi and chasen. You won’t find  the theatrical circus of cocktail making but instead the elegant and refined movements of a tea maker. Each move elegant and calming.

You sit at the bar and peruse the menu, here they have brought the mystic to earth. No longer will you befuddle about what tea is what, for not only is it arranged in terms of types of tea (green, white, red, black) but also by its tasting notes. For just like wine where how one Bordeaux to the next can differ in taste, tea from different regions and makers can evoke an astonishing variety of flavours. Hence, instead of simply listing out the name of the tea and its origin, here they provide you with an idea of its taste from vegetal to green apples to smoky.
The wine bar concept for tea, is much appreciated. For just as how wine can be hard to access beyond the cheap bottle at the supermarket, tea, you dare say is even harder to access. Its not just about buying good tea leaves, the brewing matters greatly. Each tea has its own unique traits, everything from storage to water temperature to how long to brew has a profound effect on its flavour.
The tasting
You are spoiled for choice and eventually between the three of you, four types of tea are selected. Some interesting, others not so.
First up – a green tea from Georgia. Chosen simply as you never knew Georgia had green tea. Taste wise? You won’t drink it again. Like many western (aka anything west of China) green teas, the scent is stronger than the taste. This tea was floral like gardenia but its taste was mild. A little vegetal but mostly a bore. No one wasted time on a 2nd brew.
Second, a green tea from Japan. It was a total hit amongst the three of you. Called Karigane, it had such good aroma and its first brew had a lovely sweet green bean flavour to it. With the second brew, the umami notes of a gyokuro starts to stand out.
Third, a white tea from Yunnan. Chosen by you because, good white teas are hard to find and certainly one from Yunnan! Yunnan is predominantly famous for its black tea, so it was quite interesting to taste a white tea. You are served the tea and you think this isn’t white tea? Its red tea! You ask the bartender and she confirms it is white tea. However, it was treated roasted in bamboo lending it the profiles of red tea. You would argue this is WhitexRed tea, you think to yourself, is this the rosé of tea?
Finally, you end the day with the classic Da Hong Pao, a very famous tea that dates back to 1385.  With the last of the mother trees’ (the originals if you wold call it) tea leaves harvested in 2005, it has gone from very pricey to priceless. Da Hong Pao are collected and treated as antiques. Its prices can go into the thousands for one gram. Of course, the one you drank wasn’t of such variety but it was still quite a penny. You savour the orchid-fragrance of the tea, it tannin and sweet notes. It is enjoyable but you still think, you’ll pass it for a cup of karigane any day.

As this visit was after eating 8 different pastries. You did not have a afternoon tea set to accompany your tea. But thanks to your cousin’s connections, you were served a little sweet pastry anyway. Crispy mille-feuille with vanilla based mousse, it would pair very well with say a black or red tea. The rest of the pastries looked pretty and hence tempting, a second visit is in order to enjoy the tea and desserts.

There’s a raid.
It’s ugly and dangerous and full of blood and spilling guts and gunpowder. When the smoke clears, and the bodies can be counted and identified, it becomes abundantly obvious that the sweep was not as successful as Russell Street hoped it would be. Seven dead police officers, thirteen dead crims; the number of injured on both sides can fill a bloody hospital. 
Phryne can hear the sirens all the way from her kitchen. The perfectly made cup of tea rattles in her hand as she tries to nonchalantly place it back in its saucer, as she raises her face to smile nervously at her rather heavily expecting companion.
“Did... Hugh mention anything about today, Dot?” she asks innocently, but the pitch of her voice rises a little towards the end of her question, and the younger woman frowns suspiciously at the well-known ‘tell’.
“Like what, Miss?”
“Oh, nothing, really,” Phryne mumbles and tugs a little on the hair at her nape. “Just something... out of the ordinary, perhaps?” 
Mr Butler, God bless his clairvoyant soul, decides to take pity on his employer and lays down the potato he’s been pealing rather attentively.
“I’ll telephone the Station, Miss; I promised to notify the Inspector of any changes regarding supper plans,” he explains and rises from his seat.
There are no supper plans to speak of, of course; Jack’s supposed to be spending the evening with his parents, and Phryne was rather looking forward to finishing her latest Agatha Christie book in peace. Nothing planned but an early, solitary night. 
She really aught to give Mr Butler a raise.
“Thank you, Mr B,” she exhales, incredibly grateful. “I’m sure Jack would appreciate that.” 
I know I would.
The call doesn’t take long; Mr Butler is back before she knows it. There’s a slight crease in his brow. 
“The Inspector wasn’t in, Miss,” he says, choosing his words carefully, and darting a few worried glances in Dottie’s direction. “I’m afraid there’s been some trouble in Fitzroy and he was called to assist.”
She’s out of her chair and out of her house faster than anybody can say ‘Jack Robinson’.

There’s no news at the Station. All Phryne can extract from the stammering, freshly-minted, wet-behind-the-ears constable at the front desk is that there’s been a serious raid of some illegal gambling den in Fitzroy and that Inspector Robinson and a handful of senior constables from City South were called to assist.  
She calls Mac at the Melbourne, barely getting through, her heart pounding in her chest.
“It’s bad, Phryne,” Mac sounds exhausted, “ Complete pandemonium. Reminds me of, well... “
She trails off, not finishing her thought, but Phryne understands; the green fields of France, turned muddy and bloody - there’s no running from them.
“Look, I’ve not seen Jack or Collins,” Mac mutters into the receiver, “but they’re not among the dead.” 
Phryne breathes a sigh of relief, her eyes burning. She can hear shuffling on the other line, distant moaning in the background; somebody’s calling Mac’s name.
“I’ve got to go, Phryne,” he friend says, the tone of her voice turning clipped, clinical. “I’ll telephone if anything changes.”
She doesn’t call.

They’re trying to keep it quiet from Dot, distracting her with light chores, and biscuits whenever the subject of ‘Hugh’ seems to arise. So far, Phryne’s acquired a new doily for her little side table, tasted a batch of freshly baked sponge cakes, and admired a newly embroidered cushion for her parlour. Eventually, she decided to gently, but firmly, guide her protesting companion to a spare bedroom for a quick lie down, claiming that she must rest a bit for the baby’s sake. This seems to finally convince the reluctant Dot, and Phryne is left to her morbidly musings in the parlour.
A little after seven pm, Jack stumbles through her front door and is immediately relieved of his coat and hat by a fawning Mr Butler. She stands in the doorway to her parlour, appraising his form with the critical eye of a seasoned battle nurse. Laceration just above the left eyebrow, a purpling bloom on his right cheekbone; there’s blood on his collar, but she doubts it’s his.
He looks up and into her eyes, and his own are full of something; quite suddenly, she finds it difficult to breathe, hard to move under the onslaught of flooding emotions rushing through her body. He’s alive, seemingly well - at least physically - got all his limbs and all his internal organs on the inside. Her hands are shaking as she retreats into the parlour, the adrenaline that fueled her afternoon finally packing up and leaving her system. Her lips tremble. Jack follows her inside, weary and self-conscious, and she nearly laughs at his semi-guilty expression. It’s probably hysteria.
“Phryne?” he asks hesitantly and closes the parlour doors behind them. It’s a smart move on his part - good thinking - she’s not in the right state of mind to do much of that at the moment. 
She’s vaguely aware of filtered noises behind the closed doors. Dot has woken up and Mr Butler is ushering her into the kitchen, no doubt armed with a stiff cup of tea and some scones. Phryne’s knows that she should probably inquire after Hugh, should ask of the state of Jack’s other lads, but she can’t seem to tear her eyes from his handsome, vital face.
He’s alive - alive, alive. Alive.
Phryne lunges at him, knocking him backwards, her fingers digging into the lapels of his jacket. She shoves him against the door, swallows the strangled ‘oof’ tumbling from his lips at the impact, bites his lower lip for entry, slides her tongue into his mouth. She’s wild and ecstatic, relieved beyond measure, nearly delirious at the hasty thrum of Jack’s pulse underneath her fingers as she ghosts them over his neck. He seems to revive under the onslaught, groans into her mouth, pulls her flush against him. She can feel his erection pressing into her belly, her own desire for him almost painful in its intensity.
“Jack,” she gasps against his lips, “you’re alive.”
It’s a somewhat redundant statement, but she’s certain he won’t fault her for a little verbal reassurance.
Jack releases her and kisses her forehead. 
“I am, and so are the rest of my lads,” he exhales, and Phryne can feel his breath on her ear. “It was such a bloodbath, Phryne.”
“Why didn’t you call?” she asks, mortified at the slight tremor in her voice. He pulls her to him again, lowers his lips to her neck.
“I was stuck at Russell Street all day, then I went to the hospital. One of my men got banged up pretty badly - not Collins!” he hastens to say when she jerks in his arms. Phryne sags against his chest in relief. “It’s Jenkins. He’s going to pull through, but it’ll take some time. Then I came here, only to be assaulted.”
Phryne shoves him mockingly at the words, and he stumbles backwards, clutching at his chest dramatically. She has to swallow the laughter bubbling up in her throat.
“I don’t recall you objecting much, Inspector,” she says slyly, instead.
Jack’s eyes are burning as he regards her seriously, previous comical nonsense forgotten. 
“No,” he concedes, his voice a low, throaty rumble. “No objections here, Miss Fisher.”
She wants to eat him alive, to strip him of all his layers till he’s bare before her - in more ways than one - she wants to writhe above him and take him into her body and keep him in her heart.
“Have you heard about ‘glad you’re not dead’ sex, Jack?” she quips, her fingers playing with the buttons on the front of her blouse.
Jack’s eyes stray downwards for a swift second before he fixes them back on her face.
“Can’t say that I have, Miss Fisher,” he delivers dryly, the corner of his generous mouth inching upwards. “Is it some sort of cocktail?” 
She almost laughs again but manages to smother the amusement before it breaks out of her throat. This ever-going dance between them mustn’t be interrupted.
“Would you like me to show you?” 
His eyes flash with desire, mirth, fondness; his lips quirk. He’s diverted and wanting, and Phryne finds it the best combination in the world. He looks into her eyes, blinking slowly.
“More than anything.”
There’s a raid.
It’s ugly and dangerous and full of blood and spilling guts and gunpowder.
But he’s alive.

TDBM Drabble Challenge: Jean’s awkward day
@it-is-bugs gave is the challenge of an awkward Jean moment. 400 words.

Jean’s back was against a wall, quite literally. She was pinned against the antiquated Melbourne building while Susan Tynneman blathered on endlessly about the best shops and the best tea and Jean wondered what she was thinking when she decided to go out of town to do some shopping. If Ballarat was a small town somehow Melbourne always seemed smaller. Finally at a pause in the story Jean attempted her escape.
“I’d love to stay and chat Susan but I’ll be late for my bus!”
“The bus! Well. You know I’d offer you a ride back but I gave my driver the afternoon off and I’m meeting a friend for drinks at their club, you probably don’t know it, and...”
“I appreciate the thought but I really must go. It was lovely talking to you.”
Jean pulled her parcels close to her chest and darted out into the sidewalk, strait into a man hurrying down the street. Her parcels tumbled to the ground. Waving the man away with an apology Jean dove for the ground but it was too late. A spray of lacy pink unmentionables lay forlornly on the sidewalk. The straps of something made of red satin peaked out from underneath.
Susan stood, towering over the seductive mess in deathly silence. The color that drained from Jean’s face seems to be picked up by Susan, whose cheeks were getting more red by the minute.
“Well I never. It’s Lucien, isn’t it?”
Jean tried to speak but only a strangled squeak came out. Finally she just nodded her head.
“Well that is just shameful.”
Jean stood eyeing her discarded parcels in horror as Susan’s outrage continued to build. Time seemed to stop.
“The nerve of that man. It’s bad enough for him to keep some fancy lady, but to you make you buy gifts for her. It’s disgraceful!”
Jean nearly burst out laughing. Instead she made a grab for her belongings, shoving them back in the bag as best she could.
“Yes Susan, it’s absolutely terrible.”
Susan put a consoling hand on her shoulder.
“Listen dear why don’t you give me a call on Monday? I’m sure we can find a place for you. In the kitchens.”
Jean stared at her in disbelief.
“That’s very kind of you I’ll let you know.”
Before Susan could say another word, Jean rushed out into the street in search of the bus.

SEPTEMBER 29 th 2020
And so it goes on. The Saga of Misery continues.
As September limps and staggers to its inevitably dreary conclusion my Australian home city of Melbourne remains bogged in what seems to be an endless state of Mind Numbing Lockdown. Only two hours a day of exercise permitted and that within 5 Kms of home. The Curfew has been scrapped which is all well and good but really with everything closed there is really little to do at midnight here in Melbourne.I suppose one can walk the streets in the dark if that is your thing.Wearing your mask of course.

Sad to report my own so called running training is really struggling. I run everyday of course but last week apart from one day I have not managed to drag myself out the door for a second run.

I did manage an afternoon session of hills sprints on one occasion. An excellent thing to do although it certainly brings home to you how woefully unfit you are. Great fun at the bottom of each hill pumping your arms and moving at a good pace.” Hey it’s 1974 again “ , you chortle happily. However about half way up the reality sets in and you wonder about your heart. “ serves him right, trying to sprint up such a steep hill ten times in the rain. At least he will leave a rich widow.”.

My blood pressure is perhaps the best it’s ever been and my Reasting Heart Rate whilst not setting any records still is in the mid 40s. But we can’t hide from the wombat in the room.My weight is up. Well I am down one kilo from what it was four weeks ago. But dropping a kilo in a month is nothing to blog home about. In that wonderful TV reality show which we all knew and loved The Biggest Loser, some porky hippo waved farewell to 8 kilos of lard in just one week.
I am lifting weights daily and punching the bag. I want to try to keep some vague resemblemence of muscle and have reasonable reflexes into my 89s and 90s...which are frightenly closer than I would like. Maybe when gyms open again....but when....?

I want to get my running weight back to 68 kilos which I think is an ok weight for me and will stop the village children laughing at me...”Mummy, look at the fat man “. Maybe if I could just improve my poor running , get one hell of a lot fitter, get off the sofa for once ( call me Couch tomato Jon if you will ), I could sweat off my spare tyre with a few dozen two hour runs ( two hours is of course is all that is allowed....see earlier).

Yesterday.....the start of the week...what better time to turn over a new branch and move from being a horrendous 70 kilo beached whale sitting on the couch drinking endless green tea and turn myself into a lean mean jogging machine ?
I dragged myself out of bed at the unbelievable early time of 7 AM ( ah, those office days of old ) and limped out in the early morning gloom and did my first run of the day....first run of the week...first run of my journey to a new me.
Felt bad most of the way. It was not a run of welcoming the early dawn. No waving at trees and sparrows whilst humming Kylie’s latest mega pop song. Just a painful plod.
With about a km and the last hill to run I did feel a little more human and actually increased the pace to the finish. Maybe like a cow senses water and runs to the barn for some milk , or whatever cows do, I realised it was almost over so I started to feel a tad better. Not ‘ good ‘ but better.

Afternoon run was better. Ran with Rob on my old Bath Road route. Called thus because it starts with a pretty much downhill one km on Bath Road. Sure it was only 5 km and I did walk across a main road to avoid the traffic( call me Mister Excuse). But it was an ok run ...a lot faster than the morning’s pain filled plod....with wife Tamami taking an ok photo of us finishing. Actually she took a dozen photos but the ones of me looking like a dead fish did not make the publication cut. Tamami was there with the car to drive me home...Rob ran on. One day I too will run on. The Greater Good P2

When Jean returned with her tea tray it felt as though the temperature in the room had dropped twenty degrees despite the warm day.
“Lucien?” He glanced up recognizing the question in her tone, and smiled grimly.
“Thank you Jean.”He gestured to a clear corner of the desk. “You better stay for this bit as it may impact you.” A tense silence fell as she served the tea and sat in her customary chair across from his desk.
She watched as Lucien seemed to steady himself, straightening his vest and consciously choosing to raise his chin, but she was concerned by the somewhat far away look in his eye. After a few moments, he finally spoke.
“Yes, I was at Selarang, and of course, I remember Yamamoto.” It was stated quietly, but with a steeliness that shook Jean. This was dark territory. She had only seen that look on his face once before, the night she’d found his drawings, the night she’d glimpsed a bit of the horrors that fueled his nightmares. She put her tea cup back on the tray, and waited for the young man’s response, nothing good could be coming.
“You drew pictures at the camp? In the hospital afterward? ” The young man nervously asked as though he was hoping desperately for Lucien to say no so that the day could go back to being a sunny pleasant afternoon. He looked pained, his fingers gripping the tea cup too tightly.
“Yes.”
Tanaka closed his eyes. “ Yamamoto has, as of yet, managed to evade punishment for his crimes. He has friends in high places and lucky technicalities have been on his side. Paperwork is missing, and some friends, or those he’s threatened more likely, have sworn he was in other places. As the years have passed he has become more and more paranoid that his past will catch up with him. He has discovered that you survived, and is convinced your pictures can prove he was there. ” The young man put down his tea cup and started pacing back and forth behind Jean. She chose to focus on Lucien, who had pulled out his whiskey and appeared calm, but she could see the tension in the set of his shoulders, the pallor that was creeping at the edge of his features. Tanaka continued. “Despite his good fortune at evading the authorities, he has fallen in with a rather rough gang, and is now their leader. He is coming with two of his trusted men to Australia, to search for you.” He stopped and leaned against the chair he vacated. “I only found out about the plan because they have been blackmailing my sister’s husband, because of some illegal work they are forcing him to do, and he overheard their discussion. He knows that you saved us in Singapore and told me the story so that I might warn you.” His story finished the young man sat, deflated.
“They want to kill me?” Jean held her breath.
“I am afraid so, at the very least destroy the pictures,” he paused, glancing at Jean, “or this house to send a message. He is full of blood lust, and I would put nothing past him.”
“How is it that you’ve made it to me before these thugs?”
“I chartered a flight hoping to beat them if they traveled by boat, but the reality is I do not know how far ahead of them I am.”
“Doc?!” The little group looked up to find a concerned Charlie hovering at the door. They had been so ingrossed in Tanaka’s tale they had missed his entry and called greeting.
“Right, Good.” Lucien put on a brave face. “Charlie, I’m afraid you’re going to have to call Monroe, I hate to involve him, but he needs to know what’s going on. Especially if we can’t keep these men out of Ballarat. Hobart too.”
“What’s going on Doc?”
“Call them Charlie, I’ll call Danny, and with any luck we can stay out of Monroe’s jurisdiction.”
“Lucien!” Jean’s face betrayed her mutinous feelings at the thought of involving her nerphew.
“Jean, will you call Tynneman, once Charlie’s done, we may need his help as well. We’ll keep this as safe for everyone as possible, I swear.”
Thirty minutes later a rather motley crew had arrived at the Blake household and gathered in the living room, Jean, as always, had produced enough tea and biscuits for all and was hovering waiting for Lucien to explain himself. A very disgruntled Monroe had spoken with the port authorities in Tokyo, and had determined that the men had boarded a steamer due to arrive in Melbourne three days later.
Jean listened quietly and carefully as the men argued back and forth about how best to keep the problem in Melbourne, and how to attract the men to a good location where they could be captured. Charlie wanted to have Lucien be arrested for interfereing in a police investigation, which would surprise no one, Patrick could get the news in the paper, and then they could stage a release scenario, but Tanaka did not think the men would risk anything with police officials involved. On and on they talked in circles.
Patrick was starting to make Jean nervous. He kept glancing at her and then back to Lucien, and looked to be formulating a plan. Lucien had turned his back to the group, and stood staring out the window to the garden. Uncharacteristically silent and non-confrontational. The dark cloud that had descended over him was apparent to all in the room.
Patrick followed her gaze to Lucien, before clearing his throat. I have an idea, but you’re not going to like it.

HOW FOOD IS RULING MY LIFE.

SPOILER ALERT!!! SUPER FOOD SPOTS AROUND THE WORLD IF YOU HAVE THE COURAGE TO READ MORE THAN 3 SENTENCES. Or you can jump right away to the cool tips but that would make me sad. Not that you care, of course.
Food is part of every human being’s life. But is it that big of a deal for everyone as it is for me? I don’t know if I would call myself a “foodie” but I sure have a passionate relationship with food. When I’m hungry, my brain does not function very well. I can’t think clearly, I’m not efficient but most of all, I’m in such a bad mood. Until I eat, I can’t be asked anything. My attitude tends to frighten those around me. I’m just kidding (not that much). I have no control over my tummy! My brain is not in charge here, hence the article’s title. I don’t know if some of you can relate. I hope so…
The same applies in the morning. Until I have had my cup of coffee and had enjoyed my favorite meal of the day: breakfast; I’m not here for anyone.
As Kitty Forman would say: “Honey, this is breakfast. Don’t ask me things.”

Speaking of which, brekkie is truly different in every country but I like them all, I mean, for those I’ve tried. By the way, the guy who invented the “all day breakfast” thing is my hero. Those places are heaven on earth. I’ve got some favorite spots around the world that I’m going to share with you. First of all, Bakers & Roasters in Amsterdam, let me tell you their pancakes with bacon and bananas are to die for and so is their coffee. Then, if you are in L.A., be sure to stop by Blu Jam Café. Your mouth will thank you for their crunchy French toast. Morning Glory’s Soufflé Pancakes in San Diego is also worth a try. The pink atmosphere, the food and the cocktails will bring joy to your Saturday Brunch outing. And finally, I like to go to IHOP. Yes, I do. Their pancakes and burgers won’t disappoint you. It’s the kind of place you find pretty much everywhere on the road and it fulfills my American road trips fantasies, Road 66, diner style and whatnot.
I kind of plan my vacations around food spots. I don’t “kind” of do it, actually. I do it compulsively. My itineraries are based on breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner. I love to try everything local as long as it is not too weird. I do have my limits.
Food is culturally interesting. You can learn a lot by breaking bread with locals. For example, in the south of France, from my experience, you will start with some salad. Main course will always be accompanied by some fresh “baguette” and there will always be a cheese board and some wine to finish up your meal.
When someone invites you over in Italy, be sure to free up your afternoon because you might spend a few hours at his or her table. Italians always cook the most delicious feast! Fresh homemade pasta will certainly be on the menu.
My darling Australian friends, I often think of you. Cheese and crackers fill your appetizer’s table. Your Sunday roast with gravy and tender vegetables reminds me of a fall day when I curl up on the couch watching a movie with my beloved. You also have weird food habits. First Vegemite and then vegemite pizza? Really? What the hell Ossie people?
Wandering the streets in Bangkok and eating off the sidewalk is an authentic and very suspenseful adventure. Thai Street food is like a box of chocolates you never know what you’re gonna get nor if your stomach will get through it.
If I had to rank my favorite food in the world this would be my top 6:
Pizza
Burgers and fries
Dumplings
Pancakes with bacon and gallons of maple syrup of course
Avocado on toast with poached eggs
Pasta of any kind
Yes, six is a weird number for a ranking but I couldn’t bring myself to delete an item from this list. It also makes me feel unique in a way. Anyway. For your taste buds, I am going to share my top 3 best places in the world for every element above.
