It’s no stretch to picture Don Johnson, playing his Sonny Crockett character in Miami Vice, all white linen suit and turquoise tee, lounging by the pool of this spectacular Miami Beach mini-mansion. Or climbing the home’s majestic bronze-finished staircase to kick back on the mezzanine floor’s soft-pink sofa, gazing out over the palm-fringed waterfront. It’s definitely camera-ready.

The credit for this sleek, retro-cool architectural jewel, just a short speed boat ride to downtown Miami, goes to acclaimed Italian genius Achille Salvagni. The Rome-based 50-year-old is well known for his designs for super-luxury homes and yachts, together with his exquisite, bespoke furniture and lighting creations.

According to listing agent Oren Alexander of Douglas Elliman, Salvagni was commissioned by an overseas client to design both the exterior and interior of the home. With the Covid-19 pandemic restricting travel, coupled with the booming market for upscale homes in Miami Beach, the owner has decided to sell. The asking price: a cool $21 million.

Completed just weeks ago, this almost 8,000-square-foot, gleaming white residence is squeezed onto a third-of-an-acre lot on Lakeview Drive, in the less frenetic west side of fun-loving Miami Beach.

Boaters will love the 110 feet of waterfront on the Surprise inlet from Biscayne Bay that leads into Surprise Lake. But forget about docking your superyacht here; fixed, low bridges restrict access to smaller vessels. Sonny Crockett’s 38-foot Scarab however, would fit just fine.

Salvagni designed the exterior of the two-story home with curvilinear walls, towering floor-to-ceiling windows and sweeping roof lines. Dark wood accents on the entryway contrast with the stark white paint and white pavers.

Sliding steel gates lead from quiet Lakeview Drive into a small motorcourt and entrance to the house. A grand foyer opens to a double-height living room and dining room with views out to the pool.

Throughout the home, the furniture is all bespoke from the Achille Salvagni Atelier Collection—he has studios in New York, London and Rome—and includes some truly exquisite items. Add to these a number of curated antique pieces from his native Italy.

The kitchen enters the realm of museum quality with custom cabinetry detailed in 24-karat gold leaf, a surfboard-like island and glossy Belgium Black marble flooring. The appliances are all high-end Wolf and Sub-Zero.

In the living room, it’s hard to miss the quartet of funky, retro-style yellow armchairs, the shiny blue lacquer column and an additional grouping of curvy sofas and armchairs.

And pre-empting the inevitable question; yes, every stick of furniture (even those designed by Salvagni), every piece of art, and every light fixture in the home can be included in the sale for an additional $1.2 million over the asking price.

Climb that bronze staircase to the second level and here you’ll find the expansive primary suite with its private deck overlooking the pool, a spacious bathroom, custom walk-in closets and desk area.

Four additional bedrooms reside on this floor, along with an open seating area featuring those funky pink chairs and sofa. Back down on the first floor are two more bedrooms, a yoga room, steam room and access to the garage.

Huge sliding glass doors open from the living area out to the white limestone terrace and 90-foot infinity pool. Here there’s also a cabana with outdoor kitchen.

But don’t expect breathtaking water views from the deck; the home sits on a narrow stretch of canal and looks straight into the far-from-attractive Ritz-Carlton Residences condo building. Hence the multitude of palm trees and shrubbery by the water’s edge to provide some privacy.

Even with that lofty $21 million asking price, Douglas Elliman’s Alexander is confident the home will sell quickly. Inventory for luxury, waterfront, single-family homes on Miami Beach has almost dried up, with demand far exceeding supply. Add to that the Achille Salvagni factor.

“This property is beyond comparison to any other Miami Beach home available right now. The depth and detail of the artistry and craftsmanship has to be seen to be understood,” he says.

Growing up, Virginia Morris’ family owned a holiday house in Anglesea (on Victoria’s Great Ocean Road) filled with beautiful memories and experiences she hoped to share with her own children, Kai (now 17) and Jude (15). She kept an eye on the town’s real estate for years, until a house just 100 steps from Point Roadknight beach became available.

‘It’s hard to describe, but there is an instant relaxing vibe that washes over you as soon as you walk in the front door… I felt it when I went to the first inspection when the house was on the market; I was sold the minute I walked in (although I put my best poker face on for the agent!),’ says Virginia. ‘I did everything I could to make it happen.’

Virginia loved the original 1980’s house, including its great natural air flow, north-facing windows. and exposed timber ceilings – all of which she planned on retaining.

‘The house was built by a builder local to the area… and still feels modern in its design 37 years on,’ Virginia says. ‘People are often shocked when they find out when it was built.’

At the same time, after years of being used as occasional holiday accommodation, the house had lost some of its homely feel. Several rooms had also been added over the time, leaving the property with a massive six bedrooms!

Renovations were undertaken over several years, in collaboration with local trades. The addition of a plunge pool/spa was the first priority; followed by a new kitchen with concrete bench tops; then the removal of a bar to open up the living area.

‘It felt nice to turn it back into a permanent family home,’ says Virginia.

Years later, the family converted an unused rumpus room, laundry, bathroom into a self-contained bungalow. This section features its own private entrance and courtyard, and is available for short term rent under the nickname 100 Steps to the Beach Bungalow. The family also rent the main house out on occasion, which sleeps 10 guests.

Styling wise, Virginia has played with colour to facilitate a ‘fun, relaxed beach vibe’ throughout the interiors. Indoor plants feature in almost every room, and are a welcome dose of greenery in contrast to the home’s dark exterior.

Add to this the sound of the waves as you drift off to sleep, and you have one very enviable home!

Mosman White House is located on the slopes of Mosman above Chinaman’s Beach, this three level house overlooks Sydney Harbour’s North Head and the Pacific Ocean beyond.

Set on a steeply sloping site, the house is largely concealed from the street and is carefully designed around the sculptural form of a large Angophora tree.

The principal living spaces open to generous covered terraces and the views beyond. Blackened steel brise soleil are set within deep openings in expanses of white. Smaller apertures provide framed vignettes of the surrounding garden.

Plastered walls, terrazzo floors, silk rugs and Carrara marble, all in shades of white, capture light and shadow. Strong accents of black create moments of contrast. An internal stair is deliberately darkened to counterpoint the lightness of the house and to refocus the senses to the framed external harbour views.

A basalt lined swimming pool is set within a private oasis of green.

Engaged to Develop this Home We began the journey of working with our clients at the beginning of 2016. The clients’ son had initially found the site (the day before auction) and encouraged his parents to buy the property. He was also familiar with our studio and the clients approached us after the family had seen one of our other projects in Mosman. Like many of our projects we approached the design in a wholistic manner and encompassed the architecture, interiors and furniture, including custom designed joinery and soft furnishings.

How long did the project take? The project spanned three years from initial engagement until the client move in. The prolonged duration of the project was due to the difficult nature of the site, obtaining planning approval through a complicated council process, and meticulous on-site construction.

The Brief Our clients came to us with a detailed brief to draw out the challenging site’s utmost potential for maximising views across the harbour while accommodating spacious light-filled family home.

The key objectives of the brief included: – Maximised visual access to the harbour views while retaining a high level of privacy. – Spacious interior environments that capture the movement of light throughout the day. – A serene refuge to escape from the city. – Open kitchen (with a view) to cook and entertain within and concealed butler’s pantry. – 4 bedrooms/en-suites. – Private garden and pool. – Gym/Wellness room – Environments for privacy and entertainment

What sort of mood did you want to create? Light, calm, and quiet with moments of darker contrast.

And how did you marry this with ensuring each space was functional? Ordered planning, generous proportions and natural light ensure each space is designed to be functional and beautiful.

How important was incorporating natural light and what did you do to enhance or soften it? Natural light is evident throughout the house and used to emphasise proportion and distil a sense of calmness. The exception is the internal stair which is deliberately darkened. This counterpoint to lightness throughout prompts a heighten experience moving between the spaces and refocuses the visual connection to the framed external views.

Can you briefly describe the colour palette and the decision behind it? The colour palette throughout the house is largely shades of white to capture light and shadow, with accents of black to create moments of contrast and definition of space.

What were your first impressions of the property? The property was unusual for this area of Sydney as it was vacant with no prior built structures on the land. From the initial site visit, it became immediately clear the site had an inherent potential for creating a special family home.

Could you describe the location and view? The elevated site faces east with beautiful views over the harbour towards the heads and the ocean beyond. The outlook takes in the bay of Chinamans Beach below, across to Manly, and around to Middle Harbour and Clontarf.

Were there any significant challenges, and if so, how does the design remedy them? The steep nature of the site and existing Angophora tree presented significant challenges but also an opportunity for crafting a design response that is undoubtedly site-specific. The design outcome responds to the site through located specific internal environments across three levels. Social spaces to the top and ground floor with private spaces positioned within the middle layers of the residence. The floor plan of the house is notched around the existing tree with large windows to allow light to flood inside and framed views of the private garden below.

Could you briefly explain how you collaborated with other creatives on this project? We worked closely with Will Dangar on the garden design. The landscape focused particularly on the angophora tree, the lawn and swimming pool.

How did you create a sense of flow throughout? From the moment you enter, the internal planning focuses the eye towards a framed view across the harbour, a spatial theme continued throughout the residence. The Internal spaces are anchored around a central volume containing the vertical circulation which included a lift and stair.

What approach did you take when selecting materials? To create a calm atmosphere a concise and restrained material palette of predominately durable natural materials was selected, which is a common theme of design thinking for the studio. White terrazzo floors, dark stained oak, pale plastered walls, Carrara marble, white and dark stained sandblasted oak are used inside and out.

The simple forms of the fixtures and fittings in brushed metal and concealed fittings complement the selected materials.

How have you connected the interiors to the outdoors? balcony spaces. Smaller apertures throughout frame the vignettes of the garden and environment beyond. Detailing of the windows to visually conceal frames and the use of slim window profiles enables an uninterrupted connection to the surrounding environment.

Did anything stand out to you as very special? Anything filled with unique potential?

The challenging nature of the site, due to it steeply falling away from street level towards the harbour was seen as an opportunity to create layers of living zones and visually conceal the majority of the residence from street view. An existing mature Angophora tree located in the upper part of the site was retained becoming a part of the site-specific design challenge.

Kitchen The kitchen space is defined as a white volume with a central elongated island bench formed by a black steel frame and honed granite benchtop. Joinery below the bench is finished in limewashed elmwood to introduce a soft contrast to the graphic language.

Balconies The balconies to the front facade extend the spatial area of the living rooms and master bedroom and strengthen the connection to the surrounding landscape. A fireplace with a black granite hearth is provided for cooler evenings, while an insect screen lowers against the balustrades to provide a comfortable environment for year-round use.

Circulation The central circulation volume acts as a darker and visually restrained counterpoint within the residence. The dark stained oak stair is softly lit from a single recessed trough of light to one side to reset the senses.

How would you describe the architectural and interior style? The architecture, interiors, and furniture were designed through the lens of modernist principles, establishing a timeless and light-filled residence. Light, proportion, materiality, and subtle details are utilized throughout the residence to create a sense of understated luxury.

There’s lots of clean, open white space. What was the reason behind this? The ordered spaces throughout this family home are designed as internal envelopes to capture the subtlety of changing light and evoke a sense of calm. To achieve this atmosphere a minimal material palette is used throughout. Accents of dark stained timber and bespoke joinery elements allow for moments of contrast. Luxury in architecture is created through simplicity and clean spaces to enjoy uninterrupted views of the landscape.

We've excerpted ten stunners from the book, which we're bookmarking for future travel and dining plans.

Where: Valencia, Spain Design details: When Albabel's owner wanted to revamp his 20-year-old pizzeria he turned to Masquespacio to create a space that felt like home. The food concept synthesizes Mediterranean with Andalusian and international ingredients, and, like the menu, the design takes from the charm and sophistication of southern Spanish craftsmanship and decor. Materials such as raffia, earthen brick, and native plants fill the space, along with custom chairs and stools made from olive wood, which is common in Andalusia. Bursting colors and graphical Iberian patterns are also prominent — vibrant signatures of Masquespacios's work.

Where: Jaipur, India Design details: This Italian bar and restaurant in an Indian hotel and the eponymous café around the corner are the apotheosis of India's rich crossroads of visual culture. Oudejan's design, in the belvedere and gardens of a historical palace, makes the most not only its history but also the materials and mastery of regional artisans. From glass cutters to metalsmith, muralists to marble masons, locals crafted every bit of the bespoke bar. History meets contemporary detailing and the eighteenth-century European salons meet royal Mughal themes — bright blue walls and pavilion ceilings are adorned with hand-painted jungle murals and cusped arches.

Where: Almaty, Kazajistán Design details: This Kazakh eatery is filled with wood and glass, cloud-like lanterns, and a lush plethora of plants. Privileging natural materials, as the name would suggests, the space underscores the organic and is embraced by and even sheltered within its foliage, which spills from planters of various types. It embellishes shelving and windows, flanks the dining tables, and cascades from the walls. The designers eschewed what they saw as restaurant clichés, avoiding the ubiquitous tufted sofas, Edison light bulbs, and industrial metal surfaces. Where: Cape Town, South Africa Design details: Guests enter a visual cocktail of laid-back chic à la Miami Beach, Ibiza, and Cuba through a threshold of patterned tiles. The menu reworks traditional Spanish food with gluten-free, low-sugar, low-carb, high-fat dining and, in its way, so does the space. The more casual lower floor leads to a well dressed upstairs, lined along one wall with a vodka bar featuring barmen in suspenders and Panama hats. A riot of pineapple wallpapers by Soil & Co. bridges the two spaces, alternating with exposed plates that referenced the heritage of the both the building and the brand.

Where: Mérida, Mexico Design details: Subject to the constraints of the building's monument status, Nauzet Rodriguez restored, rebuilt, and preserved balconies and doors, created high-fidelity replicas where necessary, and carefully concealed reinforcements. He describes the iron-and-wood interiors as industrial-rustic, having left the new insertions exposed for both aesthetic purposes and to avoid injecting the old stone walls. A small new concrete construction in the rear garden accommodated modern bathrooms, a warehouse, and an office. Instead of fitting the existing building to its new use, new functionality was fit to the historic building. The result is a space that feels unique and adventurous visit after visit.

Where: Madalena, Portugal Design details: FCC Arquitectura and interior designer Paulo Lobo focused on textures and the plasticity of form in their design for this wine and food bar. Where the old structure was orthogonal and classical, the new building and its interiors are biomorphic, elastic (even the window openings are lozenge- or portal-shaped), and richly material. They are influenced by the surrounding landscape and incorporate basalt, concrete, Riga pine, and Roca ceramic. Inside, toothy trusses embellish the walls. Tailored to its location, the design articulated the site with its rocky silhouette, wine casks, and the occasional breaching whale.

Where: Paris, France Design details: During the Enlightenment, Flora Danica was a botanical encyclopedia that presented folio-sized drawings of all the plants native to Denmark. Today, it is a French-inflected contemporary Danish brasserie on the Champs-Élysées — informal but materially lush. Around the main bar, the herringbone floor features a graphic combination of Carrara and green marble. Elsewhere, the space feels serene and subtle, softened by velvet shades of gray and brass details. GamFratesi overlapped the dining room with the courtyard conflating the green color scheme of the indoors with the natural tones of the outdoors.

Where: Vienna, Austria Design details: Aging is a good thing. In this shop, bar, restaurant, and cheese dairy, maturation in any form means quality. Black, white, and wooden surfaces that will age over time reference the building's history, the production processes behind foods like raw ham, and the owner's culinary concept. Destilat popped the brand's 2D check pattern in to 3D forms to create wine displays, and conceived the dairy behind a glass wall as a theatrical space. Missing raw wood beams with wire-mesh chandeliers and whitewashed surfaces gives the tasting room a feeling both modern and rustic.
