Borrowed Bride - Achilles x (Fem)Trojan! Reader

Troy (2004) Oneshot

Warnings: Posted from mobile, so no proofreading. Reader is ace coded (I know asexuality as a concept wasn't a thing in ancient greece, but some of her feelings and experiences match with what we consider asexuality today.)

Summary: As a captive of the greeks you are convinced that the unusual kindness of your captor is driven by the desire of winning your favors. Achilles enjoys of harmlessly flirting with you, but you feel in need of dissapointing him regarding his actual chances of seducing you. However, when the oportunity to do it presents you discover a different side of him as he makes you a shocking proposition.

Notes: I made the reader be a priestess and she is esentially put in the situation of Briseis, but as a completely different character making the plot take different routes.

" The men found her hidding in the temple. They thought she could amuse you. "

Every inch of your body felt repulsion to the sentence delivered by who you guessed was yet another man in service of your true captor. The destroyer of the temple, freshly arrived murderer heading the slaughtering of all the priests, he who must have kept you alive only for one reason. The dead were lucky, at least they wouldn't become the new plaything of a greek captain.

Not only one of their leaders: Achilles of Phthia, the most brutal of them all. He didn't respond to the soldier's tease, but before you could even process it he was carelessly taking off his armor. The action had at least a clear purpose, he was cleaning himself up and you were lucky he wasn't asking you to do it.

It didn't make it less awkward, as if he was bragging to you about how aestetically pleasant to look at he was like it could make any difference. Were you supposed to find comfort because he wasn't an old man?

Silence was as dense as the enviroment, but all he found in front of him was an unamused girl. Your eyes weren't constantly shying away, but there was no reaction. Not even anger or fear. The most impressive man in Greece was simply not impressing you in any way.

" What's your name? " He asked you, trying to start an interaction

The answer was more of your silence and you could tell it frustrated him.

" Eudorus heard your screaming, so i know you can speak."

" It didn't stop your men. My words mean nothing here. "

He smirked, playfull celebration after making you talk.

" Peraphs, or you are confusing meaning with impact. "

A first manifestation of rage invaded you, only centered on your impotence.

" Why does it matter? I heard your friend, i know what you want from me and my priesthood robes will not stop you. If i had become just an usable body for your amusement, then you don't need my name."

He was finishing the removal of dirt, sweat and blood on his skin and finally dressing up. Not much, what he had on still left his torso exposed.

" I have some other interests besides killing and capturing a nameless priestess. I like music, i play the lyre just like your boyfriend god does. "

Your expression of pure annoyance to his blasphemy amused him.

" What's your name? " He insisted one last time, sitting next to you in the grownd. " … Even servants of Apollo have names."

You answered the question and he seemed tranquilized by that.

" Are you afraid, ( y/n)?"

" You tell me, Achilles is a greek synonim for demise in my vocabulary. " You ironically mocked his ask. " I'll struggle against your touch, i warn you. I'm a sacred maiden and i belong to my god, even in captivity. "

He stared at you for an instant before replying.

" And i honor your loyalty and courage, but with me it is unnecesary. I will not do to you anything you don't want me to."

It was a calming statement, but he delivered it with a flirty undertone. Dirt and damage aside, he must have found you appealing and to that man flirting seemed to be as natural as breathing. Not the best first impression, but it was nothing compared with what was about to come.

The commander in chief of all greek forces, King Agamemnon of Mycenae, decided that you had to be his share of the treasure. You were mercielessly dragged away once more and the king made Achilles witness your recapture as a power display. It was an act of pure spite meant to reinforce his political domain of the army, but through it you easily understood that the new master was even worse. Fear couldn't be easily hidden anymore, you were terrified.

Silent tears began to fall down your face and something unexpected occured. The infamous wrath of Achilles was unleashed, he was ready to fight the personal guard of the mycenaean king to get you out of there. Only the visible increasement of your horror stopped him.

He wanted to save you, but didn't mean to scare you.

An even greater idea occured to him, one that would also contribute to the growth of his eternal glory. He refused to fight in the war as a protest, knowing the greek army would be desperate for his contributions. Clever choice, since they got hopeless pretty quick without him. In your insignificant position as a prisoner of war you gave a great service to your country taking him out of the battlefield.

It was a matter of time untill the warrior came to rescue you by himself before the despicable king could hurt you and all chance to pressure him into fighting was gone. You had no idea of what would happen next, but felt guilty by the fact that your personal safety could mean the ruin of your people if he would fight for the greeks again.

Achilles wasn't the worst possible company in that nightmarish place, but you were almost sure he fancied you and that was still a problem. You had conflicted feelings regarding him and the many risks he took for you. He was your captor, yet also your savior. You were supposed to hate him but you couldn't help to feel a bit thankfull. Other men you have meet there being more awfull than him wasn't an expiatory excuse for his hubris driven sacrilege or your enslavement. However, it was a concrete fact making your survival easier. It was making a difference and that was enough in that desperate situation.

The one thing you wished you could change from him on a regular basis living with the myrmidons was the flirty humor. It was uncomfortable even when he let you know he wasn't going to act on the jokes. You weren't going to confront him about it, but you got a proper space to do it during one of his many attempts to charm you.

" Why did you choose to love a god? " He asked you once ríght as you both were finishing dinner. " I think you'll find that romance one sided."

" The way i experience romance fits better with that. Apollo loves me as i am, I doubt a mortal man would. "

He thought you were just sharing a self deprecating observation about your chances of finding a husband.

" Why? I bet trojan men were doing line to get you. Temples tend to choose only the prettiest of their pretty aspirants."

" I am aware of that, i know what men think when they see me and that's why i can't engage in union with a mortal man. I don't have the slightest interest in the consummation and that is usually their most longed part of marriage. My union with Apollo is spiritual and i like it that way, lack of physical accesibility is my preference. "

Achilles listened you with curiosity and didn't hesitate in doing his first ask.

" You are Interested in romance, but you don't like to be touched. Is that the accurate answer?"

You nodded in affirmation with a shy smile.

" … This must be a nightmare for you with all those men wanting to touch you and no one caring to romance you. "

" Indeed, it is. " You added to his conclussion. " The temple was my place in the world. Even in Troy how i feel Is difficult to explain, but no one questioned me there. I found the way of making my family proud while being myself, but you just ruined everything i had built. "

" Pretty much, yes. " He frankly admitted. " Even if you return, the priests will never believe i never touched you. It's most likely that priesthood is forever lost for you. "

You looked at him with hopefull amazement.

" Does that mean you'll let me go now that you understand i'm worthless to you?"

Achilles was slightly disconcerted about your claim.

" Worthless? I don't think a woman fitting for a god could ever be worthless to me."

It was your time to get even more honest about the issue. There was no other way, he had to understand you would never be who he surely wanted you to become with him.

" You know exactly what i mean. Do you think I haven't realized of what's going on? You are different from the other greeks only in one detail. Agamemnon doesn't care about my consent, but he knows that you do and that fear has kept me safe from his hands. I take your words from the first day we meet and it's easy to see what you are up to. You have been incredibly nice to me, gifting me with a sample of your mysterious softness. Instead of eating with your men, we have dinner in your tent and you feed me with the same dish you are having despite you could be making me eat the food of slaves. We talk for hours, you make me feel good in your company and later at night you go to sleep naked. Everytime i flee to Patroclus' tent fearing you were blackmailing me into sleeping with you. "

He chuckled at your still percievable naivety.

" The term you are looking for is seduction, not blackmail. And i have to inform you it's all in your head. I just want to get to know you better and if i sleep naked, that's because i find it very comfortable. Had you ever try it?"

" SEE, YOU ARE DOING IT AGAIN!" You yelled with frustration. " You are calling Eros and waiting for the visit of Himeros. One of the brothers may attend your call, but the other never will. I'm desireless and that's part of how i experience romance. "

The open confession should have dissapointed him, or so you thought, but it didn't.

" Has it never occured to you that maybe i just like you and I am not part of some conspiracy to steal your maidenhood? I'm many despicable things, but never a liar. I do find you attractive, you are beautifull and i can't say i don't like your body. Yes, I would be taking you to bed if you wanted me to…. but you don't want that and i respect it. "

" Then why do you keep me?" You softly asked him. " Which man in your place would keep a war prisoner he isn't planning to bed?"

He had a great answer for that.

" One that accepts he shouldn't touch her but still wishes to romance her?"

It caused some almost involuntary giggling from you, since he was repeating the interpretation of your preferred definition of romance he understood.

" You can't be serious."

He was, but he still have some jokes left to point it out.

" Aren't you curious about how it would be like to have a husband you can see everyday?"

" I'm not going to pretend i'm your wife, Achilles. "

After you explained yourself to him, it was his time to be open with you.

" I'll never get married, a prophecy says i gave up my last chance when i came to Troy and I didn't use to care about that… Now i think it would be nice to experience a bit of what i'm missing before the end. Hector talks about the trojan wives waiting for their men, Odysseus wouldn't shut up if you ask him about Penelope. His wife, he misses her to death… I'll understand if you don't really feel curious about that, but i do. "

Another unexpected move on his part, but it was so heartfelt that you got to feel touched by it.

" Stealing the bride of a god can bring a curse upon you. "

" I'm already cursed. " He replicated with sad resignation. " And it would be a borrow. As i told you, I will keep you pure. You can go back to Apollo whenever you wish, if his priests let you."

" The ones that are still alive, you mean. " You snarked back. " I guess i don't have a choice but to follow you hoping Apollo will understand this madness was your idea. "

" Who knows? Maybe you will like me more than him. " The myrmidon replied. " I will do my best for you, I promise. "

For whatever reason in his vague speech about a prophetized curse Achilles wanted to have someone who would take care of him. It was quite sad to think about, since the mightiest warlord of the greeks was so lonely that he wanted to replace a wife with a slave.

" Put on some clothes and I'll sleep next to you tonight."

The proposition you were making in acceptance of his plan amazed him a bit.

" You don't have to do that sort of effort for me. I understand it's something I can't ask. "

You chuckled, clear and freely, then glanced back at him with an adorable looking expression.

He was lost, but still trying to understand you.

" I do like cuddles. " You sweetly explained. " I will never fall asleep in my god's arms, but cuddling is something I feel curious enough to try. "

You, Bennett, and Razor were an unusual trio, and many will attest to this statement. You differ in personalities and ambitions, even favoring completely contrasting delicacies, and yet there will never be a more lively and iconic dynamic than the three of you.

You and Bennett were the first one to meet when he rescued you from a group of vicious Electro Slimes. He was successful in his intent, but you had to escort him back to Mondstadt where he can be healed by the Deaconess.

You met Razor the next after you grew comfortable with your friendship with Bennett. The latter excitedly told you about another friend of his who resided in Wolvendom and was quite well acquainted with the wolves. Your first encounter with Razor was rather tense, and understandably so. He was wary of you, watching your every move as you strolled around Wolvendom with a gleeful Bennett who was oblivious to the atmosphere between the two of you. Most of his experience with humans are less than ideal but as Bennett unknowingly forced the two of you to spend time together, his walls slowly broke and he accepted you as one of his Lupicals.

As time passed and the three of you grow closer and closer together, a revelation descended upon you, and a startling one at that. You acquired feelings for both boys. It wasn't difficult for you to understand why you grew to like both of them. They were so easy to fall in love with. Bennett is an adventurous and motivated boy who, although had a streak of bad luck in him, has a positive spirit and is very generous and caring towards everyone. Razor is a strong yet gentle soul who is protective over those dear to him, and will always go out of his way to show his affection with his uncommon but innocent gifts.

Unbeknownst to you, the two share the same feelings for you. Bennett knew he liked you when you refused to leave after he saved you, even after he insisted this was a normal occurrence for him. Razor took a while to understand what was that hammering in his chest after you took the responsibility of caring for the wolf pups his Lupicals gave birth to.

It was an awkward situation for the three of you when Bennett and Razor decided to confess to you at the same. When the two of them professed their love for you and offered their gifts with bowed heads and tightly closed eyes, they slowly turned to look at each other with puzzlement, heads tilted and eyebrows furrowed. You, however, stood in front if them with redness coating your face and a thundering heartbeat.

"You like ( Your Name ) too, Razor?" Questioned Bennett, gaping at him.

Razor nodded once. "Like her, very."

Normally, when two people discover that the a close friend of theirs holds the same affection to their person of interest, a quarrel will ensue, and estrangement will follow. But Bennett and Razor were very unlike such an example and instead of compromising their close friendship, the two came to an agreement that whoever you should choose - if you indeed have feelings for one of them - they will remain friends and accept your decision.

Imagine the surprise on their faces when you leaned forward and gave each one of them a small peck on their nose, admitting shyly that you have feelings for both of them.

It took some time for the three of you to get used to your relationship. After all, none of you have ever been in a relationship before, not to mention there was the three of you in it. You carefully treaded through uncertainties and tribulations of inexperience, and it took a while but the you, Bennett, and Razor got the hang of how to make your relationship work.

Bennett is always the one dragging you and Razor to adventures. He will come knocking at your door with a wide grin, Razor lingering behind him and giving you a small smile and a shy wave.

"We're going to Windrise today! I heard some adventurers saying they spotted a weird looking Hilichurl with a briefcase! Wanna join us?" Asked Bennett excitedly, eyes shimmering.

Razor glanced at the other boy before returning his gaze at you with firmness. "I will protect you both. No worry."

You can't ever say no to them, especially when both of them look so happy and thrilled.

Razor is the protector of the relationship. With the dangerous enviroment he grew up in and the training he took under the supervision of a human, it was to be expected. He was always on the prowl, prepared to draw out his claymore and defend you and Bennett from any enemies with an evil intent.

You and Bennett are never worried of being attacked out of nowhere with Razor around you.

Razor takes his responsibility as your protector seriously. The rare times he and Bennett come over at your place, he will never allow himself to fall asleep and would sit by the window where he can oversee your residence. You and Bennett would have to drag him to your bed and convince him that you were in a safe enviroment to make him ease down and actually take a rest.

You three share the same bed, and it's always you in the middle. Bennett will cling on to your slumbering form and would snore from time to time, but when you stroke his hair or when Razor softly nudge his head against his, Bennett will quiet down for a while and continue snoring again after. Razor was quite a sight to see when sleeping. Being raised and cared for by wolves, it was to be expected he would mimic their position in sleeping. He would curl up beside you or Bennett, always nuzzling his face against the crook of your necks. You and Bennett will never say it but he looks so adorable when sleeping like that.

You and Razor know of Bennett's unluckiness. Unfortunately, because you're in a relationship, you two are more involved in his bad luck. Bennett is always guilty of putting the both of you in difficult situations and will apologize profusely, even when the two of you insist that it wasn't his fault.

"It kind of sucks that I'm also giving bad luck to the two of you. I mean, you're one of the few good things that ever happened in my life." He admitted in a gentle whisper, a pout forming on his visage as tears begin to appear at tbe corners of his eyes.

You and Razor felt like an arrow shot through your hearts at what he said and you spend your time cheering up Bennett. Although his unluckiness always seemed to hinder your attempts, Bennett appreciated and loved your efforts, which is enough to bring back his big smile.

When the rare times come when one of you are busy and cannot find time for the other two, the latter pair will frequently visit the missing member, often with gifts.

Bennett loves giving you kisses. Not just on the lips, but all over your face. When your relationship was still at the early stages, Bennett would lean forward towards your face and pull back after an awkward amount of time of hesitation. But when you told him that he is allowed to give you kisses and you would love to receive them, Bennett will take all the chances to shower you with kisses. He loves giving kisses more than receiving because he has so much love to give, but when you do the same to him, his cheeks will be painted in a rich scarlet color and his tongue will be tied, unable to anything except stammering.

"A-Ah, ( Your Name ), please, stop - " Stuttered Bennett as he covered his blushing face with his gloved hands, embarrassment palpable in his posture.

You let out a giggle as you took his hands and tried to pry them off. "Aww, don't be like that, Benny. Let me see your cute face. And I know you love my kisses."

Bennett splutteted.

Razor prefers to give you hugs over kisses. His hugs are big, warm, and welcoming. You'll always feel safe when you're in his arms. When you're in his embrace and you're both comfortable, you won't be leaving his arms for a while. Sometimes Bennett will wiggle himself into the embrace and the three of you just cuddle.

"You're so warm, Razor." You whispered as you nestled yourself on his chest.

Razor showed you a small smile. "I make you feel safe?"

You let out a laugh. "And loved."

More often than not, Bennett and Razor will convene and think of something to surprise you. These boys are filled with love for you that even if there's no occassion, they'll come together to buy you a gift they thought of together.

Bennett gives you trinkets from his solo adventures, but even if most of the time they're broken or burnt, you heartily accept them. Razor always gives you items that are found in the wild such as sweet flowers, mushrooms, pinecones, windwheel asters, sometimes wolfhooks, and if he was lucky, an abundant amount of fowls. You mentioned once how you needed ingredients to make food while you're out adventuring alone, or some things for this thing you call ascension. You love their gifts and always make good use of them or take good care of them.

Bennett had long introduced Razor to his dads (a group of adventurers who saved Bennett long ago). When he introduced you to them, you were immediately flocked and you regaled with tales of their adventures back when they were young, and Bennett was just a wee baby then. You stayed with them for hours, just listening. All the while, Bennett just enjoyed watching you get along with his family so well. Since the adventurers were old, you visit them often and help Bennett take care of them.

Some would think meeting Razor's family would be difficult. They are wolves, after all, and they were known for being vicious. But they couldn't be more wrong Anyone Razor trusted, the wolves trusted so they immeditely accepted you in their pack and treated you the way they treated Razor. They surround you whenever they sense danger, ready to pounce on whatever enemy emerges. The wolves would stay close by and let you snuggle into their fur when the weather is cold. Razor really likes it when you play with the wolf pups and help in hunting dinner for his family.

Bennett and Razor talk about you with their families. Bennett's dads approved of you the very second they saw a glimmer in his eyes when he mentions you, and even though the wolves cannot understand Razor's human speech, they can sense the love in his voice and the frequent drop of your name makes them understand it was directed to you.

" - she and Razor helped me fight an Abyss Mage earlier!" Bennett exclaimed, beaming. "If it weren't for them, I would've probably returned back here with more injuries, hehe."

"( Your Name ) made Bennett and me flower bracelets." Razor then proceeded to lift his arms to show the wolf pups the bracelet he mentioned. "Now, Razor need to take care of it, so me not moving around much."

The three of you always walk hand in hand together, you in the middle. You will swing your linked hands together and Bennett will follow your lead. You and Bennett will have to encourage Razor do the same and have to explain the process of it. Razor will be a little confused at first but then begin enjoy the hand swinging once he get used to it.

Dates are frequent, and it'll always be with the three of you. You all promised never to have a date with someone missing. There will be times where the boys will want a private date with you, but most of the time, it's always you three.

Bennett's dates are adventurous - of course - and unique. He'll find some place you haven't seen before or find an activity you three can try. You'll experience a lot of things in his dates, this includes being attacked out of nowhere and having to save Bennett from time to time. Nonetheless, his dates are always fun and will your heart palpitating.

Razor's dates are simple and peaceful. He'll find a nice and safe place with a beautiful view and the three of you have a picnic there. He's always the one preparing the food for you to eat, but you and Bennett will always bring desserts for Razor to try. Razor insisted that he wanted to learn more human dishes and he can find motivation in doing so by having you and Bennett eat them. His cookings at first were not up to standards - or consumption - but the more dates he arrange, the better he becomes. You mentioned once you liked his hash brown shaped as a puppy paw print and strived to perfect it. If you're lucky, he'll even bring a wolf pup or two.

In your dates, you always make sure you cater to your partners interests. You will do something Bennett likes to do, and then what Razor likes, and then something the three of you can bond over. With that, your dates are always chaotic (not as chaotic as Bennett's dates though) but extremely fun.

Bennett and Razor are suckers for your compliments. They always love getting them from you. Although the two have different ways of accepting them.

Bennett cannot easily accept compliments. It was rare for him to receive one with his bad luck and whenever he does get one, he malfunctions. What more if it comes from you?

Bennett will shake his head vigorously as redness painted his cheeks, waving his arms as though denying your compliment.

"( Your Name ), y-you can't mean that! I-I'm not that great!"

"But Benny," You cooed, as you leaned closer to him, smiling. "You're one of the best person I've ever met! You're kind, sweet and - "

As you continue praising him, Bennett will slowly, slowly accept your compliments, and you might not know, but your compliments are building his confidence in himself. Bennett is a happy and positive boy but his bad luck caused him so much troubles and backlash that his self esteem plummeted. Continue supporting and praising this boy, you're making him super happy.

"I guess I do have some good qualities . . . thanks ( Your Name ). You're really cool, too. And very pretty." Bennett admits as he rubbed the back of his head.

Razor's compliments to Bennett are simple and straightforward, and somehow Bennett accepts them easier than yours. Probably because it's simple and straightforward.

Unlike Bennett, Razor accepts your compliments with a smile and always returns your compliments with one of his own. He doesn't know why some people are embarrassed being complimented. It was a nice thing to do, after all.

"You're really strong, Razor!" You exclaimed after watching the Cryo Abyss Mage he was battlinng evaporate in thin air.

Razor faced you, a smile gracing his briks as he wiped a sweat from his brow. "Thank you. You strong too."

"I can fight Hilichurls, but I'll need some backup if it's Abyss Mages." You laughed. "But thanks, Razor!"

Razor and Bennett insisted that they help you train. You have seen how they fought and trained, and you were a bit reluctant because of its harshness, but after contemplating over its benefits like being able to defend yourself, helping more in adventures, and being able to finally properly protect Bennett and Razor, you accepted.

Bennett is very eager to teach you what he knows and has brought you and Razor to a nearby Hilichurl camp to showcase his abilities and give you pointers after. You and Razor end up carrying him back to the Mondstadt with his arms over your shoulders, the Hilichurl camp up in flames behind you two.

"Did I . . . defeat them?" Questioned Bennett. He couldn't lift his head from the exhaustion and pain.

"Yes, you definitely did." You answered.

Razor's training was a bit more proper but you haven't learned much because his training required claymore, and you were far from being a claymore user. Razor demonstrsted how to pick up a claymore but you couldn't even lift it off the ground.

You pouted as your hands lets go of the handle of the claymore. "I couldn't do it."

Razor approached you and patted your head. "Good effort. Maybe claymore not for you."

Bennett and Razor now always goes to you when they need patching up. Now, they could go and visit Barbara like they used to but they preferred that you tend to their wounds for two reasons. One, they love you and love spending time with you. Two, they get kisses on each wound you cover.

Bennett has a habit of running towards you and Razor at full speed and tackling you both down to the ground, hugging the two of you. You and Razor don't mind it and actually enjoy this sort of thing.

Razor named wolf pups after you and Bennett. This causes confusion when you visit him at Wolvendom.

"Bennett, sit." Ordered Razor.

Bennett and wolf pup Bennett both sat down at the same time.

"( Your Name ), stop playing with food." Razor reprimanded sternly.

You looked down at your plate of neatly cut steak strips while wolf pup ( Your Name ) who sat by your feet poking at the meat it was eating whimpered.

When a fight ensues between you three, it won't take long before you relent and make amends. You three have soft hearts and can never stay angry at each other for too long. You apologize and promise to be better and more understanding.

But if a fight arises between only a pair, the one who isn't part of the fight courts the other two to make up already. If you and Bennett have an argument, Razor will push Bennett to talk things out with you. If you and Razor are the ones in the argument, Bennett will panic and will have a hard time choosing who to approach first. You and Razor make up after the two of you try to comfort Bennett at the same time. If Bennett and Razor were the ones in an argument, you can easily talk to them individually and the two will approach the other and apologize.

Bennett and Razor never compete to be your favorite. They know you love both of them equally, and they love you just as much. You have never felt unloved when you're with them. You three are content and happy.

The most wholesome relationship ever.

To be frank, I actually loved it! My main critique is the obvious lack of gameplay, which is a red flag considering SEGA’s own confidence in the project. I think it can’t be stressed enough the fact that by this point we SHOULD have some footage of actual gameplay, granted what we say wasn’t all CGI but we shouldn’t have to wait more to see how Sonic plays in this game. I just hope that SEGA is indeed doing this for the sake of giving a surprise to the audience instead of more unfortunate reasons like a lack of confidence or progress.

About the aesthetic itself...if I’m honest, I wanted a less cartoony and whimsical Sonic game for a long time, however I have to point out that the enviroment is guilty of suffering of the ‘’Sonic on Unreal Engine 4 Fan Game’’ syndrome, since at first glance it looks generic and unremarkable. I’m going to be frank here...

This premise is absolute garbage.

I’m not usually the one to jump to negative conclusions regarding Sonic, and anyone who follows my blog knows that, but I’m also not going to pretend this is fine and I will quickly explain why.

The reason this premise is so bad is because its yet ANOTHER plot of ‘’Oh, Eggman awakens an ancient monster but he gets upstaged because he can’t control it’’ and to be frank, I don’t even want to give it the benefit of the doubt because this trend should have stayed dead, period. We already have 10 games with this shitty ‘’Eggman gets fucked up’’ plotline, so why do it AGAIN, specially when the post-2010 games, in spite of all their flaws, have moved on from this?

I’m just gonna ask a simple question to illustrate how pointless this trend is.

I find it very ironic that the fandom preaches about not accepting mediocrity in Sonic, and yet it lowered its standards so much that they’re happy to have consistently mediocre writing because ‘’It’s better than Pontaff’’. If the characters are going to be bent whenever the writer sees it fit, then Pontaff and Flynn are interchangable, the only difference is that the later’s writing pretends better to be IC.

Am I really supposed to be hyped about the games’ writing resembling this in the future?

I know I’ve been pretty harsh with Ian Flynn but really, I’m just tired of his influence on the franchise as of late. And regardless of the fact that I’m tired of Sonic having western writing, I would be more open minded if not only Ian actually tried to improve from his trademark writing mistakes, but also if his fans stopped excusing every controversial take or writing choice he does, specially considering that apparently he can only do wrong when SEGA is involved according to them.

I don’t think he’s a bad writer per se, but I would definitely take anyone else over him to write for the actual canon games.

Anyway, I hope the actual plot of this game is not another Eggman getting upstaged story, but if it turns out only minor details revealed to us were innacurate, then my grievances still stand. I just hope Frontiers at the very least turns out to be a good enough game to make up for the potential problems its writing might have.

I imagine she'd go possibly well with someone like Ferdinand. lol

Ferdinand: Ferdinand is actually one of my favorites and definitely the one guy from the Black Eagles I wanna romance. Why? Because he is everything I wanna look for in a Fire Emblem guy. Cavelier? Check! Neat knightly & noble design? Check! He has got that big dumbass energy one which I absolutely love once in a while! Lmao

His rivaly with Edelgard is funny as well, too bad it's said that this rivaly is one-sided on his part. Still, he is very confident and proud, though it's exactly this pride that is most likely his biggest flaw. He needs to learn that sometimes losing isn't that bad. I am also worried that he won't shut up about being a noble but worries aside I am pretty sure he will be an awesome character!

Bernadetta: There's not too much to say about Bernie. I absolutely adore and I want to recruit her in my very first playthrough even though I will start with the Golden Deer. Her design is one of my favorites and visually she reminds me a lot of Katarina. Too bad this doesn't last long as hercut changes a bit after the timeskip. Her interactions with Byleth must be funny if she is that shy and introverted! Her facial expressions are so damn cute and it's no wonder she is a fan favorite already!Honestly I'm thinking of romancing her myself, as far as S-supports go I am pretty set on the Black Eagles...

Caspar: Oh boy, I do have mixed feelings about Caspar. I went from loving him to hating him to liking him again. I must admit I'm not good with these hot-blooded types lately about Caspar thankfully isn't just that. I really like his sense of justice and his honesty. That will set him apart from character such as Vaike who are mainly crass and impulsive. I hope his friend Linhardt will also set him straight (and he already does). The two will go great with each other if they learn from each other! I have high hopes for Caspar! Besides he looks amazing after the timeskip!

Petra: Petra is interesting. While I didn't like her visually, unlike Dorothea she grew on me a lot. Petra comes with world building. Her kingdom, Brigit, is a vassal state to the Adrestian Empire. This relationship between these countries is reflecting in the relationship between Petra and Edelgard as well. Petra treats Edelgard with utmost respect despite being a noble herself.

During the playgame footage that have been released in the last few days Petra class was shown to be the commoner class. I wonder why? Because she is from a foreign a kingdom? A kingdom which is potentially seen as a country inferior to the kingdom? Will Petra have to deal with xenophobia or racism even? Edelgard at least treats her very well and I am pretty sure the othe students will as well. Petra seems to be a hard-working girl despite the unfamiliar enviroment, I love that!

Linhardt: I liked his design from the very beginning. Linhardt reminds me a lot of Soren from a visual point of view. Unfortunately, their fierce intelligence is the only thing they have in common. Linhardt is a very lazy person which I don't mind but he is also the sleepy type. The sleepy character trope is not a trope I personally like, so my impression of Linhardt got a bit worse. But maybe I will end up loving him regardless of that.

 Unlike Caspar who is more brawn than brains, Linhardt is very interested in crest reseach and I am wondering how the story impacts him as a character. After all, his leader Edelgard seems to hate the crests. Will they clash because of it. Also how will he change after the timeskip? Will he still be lazy even as an adult? I can't wait to read his supports!

That's all for today. I will try to write down my thoughts about the Blue Lions and Golden Deer students as soon as possible! Because the Black Eagles are the class I wanna play with last I will try to dodge as many spoilers when the game comes out!

Make Me Warm

Hey @shimmershae. I just saw your post about a Caryl fanfic. You wanted warm and fuzzy? Here ya go!

Daryl leaned the head of the axe against his boot as he took a few minutes to rest. Despite the frigid cold, he had taken off the jacket and his hat, leaving him in just his sweater. It might not sound so bad, but considering it was 10 degrees below freezing (and dropping), there was no way he would take off any more layers he had on. 

He let out a few deep breaths as he gave his arms a break, the burn slowly receding from those muscles. His warm breath was visible in the cold air, and he wouldn’t have been surprised if the top of his head was steaming too from being hot from all the chopping. He didn’t want to admit it, but with each passing year it seemed like it was becoming more and more difficult to do any kind of physical labor. Sophia had often expressed her concerns about him continuing to do all this work around the yard, including chopping wood. She suggested buying some of those Enviro Logs from the local Home Depot instead of chopping his own wood. It was the “firewood substitute” that was made of recycled cardboard and emitted less greenhouse gases apparently, and all you had to do was take a match to it and it would burn for a long time. But what was the fun buying fake wood from the store to burn instead of in the outdoors?

He loved his daughter, and always listened to her input on things... he just didn’t always agree with her suggestions.

When he noticed a few white flakes calmly floating down around him, he glanced up and saw that snow had already started to begin to fall. He chuckled to himself, thinking about how his wife had always said that the meteorologist’s predictions of what snowstorms would do were as accurate as “their dog trying to catch treats in the air”. They weren’t calling it to hit their area until around 1am, but mother nature had decided to start early. The current prediction was that they were going to have 8 inches of snow, but it was only two days ago that we were only supposed to get some sleet and black ice. No one exactly knew how much it would actually be until it happened these days.

The threat of snow reinvigorated his motivation to get the rest of the wood chopped. He only had a few pieces left to break, so he stretched his right arm, and sighed at the sound of a ‘pop’ before he picked up the axe again. He threw grunted at the impact of chopping the wood on his hands and arms, grateful that his wife had bought him new, thicker gloves for christmas. He grabbed both pieces and threw them on the tarp next to the tree stump he was using before he grabbed one of the remaining pieces. 

Being a mechanic was his chosen career, but the outdoors is where he felt the most peace. It was his favorite hobby to work on the garden, or trim the hedges, or even take down a dead tree a time or two. His brother often made fun of him for being into pansy shit like yard work, but he really did enjoy it. This was where he could relax and think about his life, both past and present, and where he was able to clear his head and make those tough decisions that everyone had to at least a few times in their lives. Besides, it was also a source of pride to see flowers and certain types of berries growing in his yard. After doing some back breaking work, it was worth to see his garden and the rest of his yard be so full of life. 

He stretched his right shoulder out again, thankful that he was finally done with the wood. He walked over to his shed and put the axe back to it’s original position on the shelf before closing the door behind him and locking it with a padlock. He then walked over to his pile of firewood, grabbed the four corners of the tarp, and pulled them up and over so that they were covering the wood. Then he twisted the four corners so that the DIY sack he made wouldn’t come loose easily, and with a grunt, he pulled it off the ground and over his shoulder. But by the time he made it to the back porch of their home, he was huffing and puffing like he had black lung disease, and he couldn’t help but admit to himself that his days of chopping wood and carrying it back to the house on his own were numbered.

He walked through the door of their screened in porch and dropped the wood just next to the back door that led to the house. Then he opened the door just enough to have it cracked before unfolding the tarp and grabbing a couple of pieces of firewood so he could carry inside. He pushed the door open and, with as much effort as possible, kicked the mud off of his boots before walking into the living room. Then he kneeled down and placed the pieces of wood in the firewood holder next to the fireplace. He went back and forth a few times from the porch before finally grabbing the last bit of wood and closing the back door behind him. 

After depositing the last of the wood in the living room, Daryl took off his boots and slowly stood up, groaning as he felt some of the kinks in his back tighten up. He was definitely going to be feeling it tomorrow morning, but knowing that they had enough wood to keep them warm throughout the rest of the week made everything worth it. He could hear his wife talking on the phone in their study down the hallway, likely talking to Sophia since she and Carl had just gotten back from their honeymoon. He didn’t speak to Sophia on the phone often, but it didn’t bother him. He wasn’t a fan of talking on the phone to begin with. Rick often teased him about it, saying he’s more likely to answer if he texts him than calls him because Daryl would often just cancel the call and text back “what?”. Besides, Daryl always got the scoop from Carol once she’s off the phone, so there was no need to make Sophia recite everything again.

He grabbed the small, portable vacuum in the closet nearby and cleaned up the remnants of the dirt he brought in with his boots. Then once he finished, he went back into the living room and began to sort some of the wood in the fireplace to make a fire. When he felt a nudge on his back, he looked behind him and smiled when he saw his old companion looking at him with his head tilted to the side, a habit that it had since he was a puppy. He chuckled and began to scratch the dog’s head. 

“Hey my boy... remember when ya used to play fetch with me while I chopped the wood in the backyard?”

The dog gave his hand a few licks before slowly walking over towards his favorite spot in the room, on top of the ottoman nearest to the fireplace. Daryl had gotten his dog not long before he had met his wife. He was honestly still a puppy then, about six months old when Carol stumbled into his life. Now, his buddy had some grey whiskers of his own, and his old age was showing as he moved much slower nowadays, and hardly went beyond the porch even when Daryl went out in the yard. It was just another reminder of the years that had passed in Daryl’s life, and although it was painful that his dog was hardly in the mood to play anymore, he was still grateful that he was still there to begin with.

He used some leaves to start the fire, and blew on it lightly to help it going. After a few failed tries, and a few curse words, he finally got a fire going. He stood up and, after stretching his back again, admired his handiwork as he basked in the warmth of the new fire. But then he felt her slender arms sliding around his middle, and he smiled as he hugged her arms with his elbows. “I got sap on my hands. Don’t want to get it on ya.”

“That’s the sexiest thing I’ve ever heard you say,” she quipped and gave him a kiss between his shoulder blades.

“Stop,” he said, but he was smiling. “I take it that was Sophia?”

“Mhmm, they got back last night.”

“Good, don’t want them stuck in Las Vegas.”

“It’s not the worst place to be stuck in.”

“It ain’t the cheapest either, though. So I’m glad they got back before the snow hit,” he said. He turned around and gave her a tender kiss, careful not to touch her. But when he pulled back, he noticed she had been crying. “You good?”

She sighed and nodded before going in for another hug, and he wrapped his arms around her and kissed the top of her head, all the while keeping his hands up. “I just can’t believe our daughter’s old enough to get married and go on a honeymoon.”

“I know,” he agreed. “I think we did pretty good though. She’s a good kid.”

“Not a kid anymore,” Carol said with a pouty face. “But yeah, I think we did too.”

He chuckled and gave her a quick kiss before backing away. “Be right back, I’m gonna take a shower.”

“Don’t be gone too long. I’ll get cold without you,” she said with a smile before grabbing a blanket and throwing it over her shoulders. 

He smirked and quickly made his way to their bedroom before taking the world’s fastest shower. Once he put on some sweat pants and a t shirt, he made his way back to the living room. But then he snorted into laughter when he saw her all bundled up like an eskimo and sitting on a nest of pillows, a steaming mug of ‘something’ in her hands.

“Don’t laugh at me, I’m cold,” she said pitifully. “You know I don’t handle the winter very well.”

“Oh I know,” he said with another chuckle before he sat down next to her and leaned against the couch. “Unbundle yourself, I’ll keep ya warm.”

Carol smiled at him and put her mug down before taking off her sweater and scarf. She shivered at the sudden chill, but then hummed in content when she cuddled up next to Daryl and leaned her head on his shoulder. “I love how you’re like a natural furnace.”

He chuckled and threw a blanket over them both before wrapping his arms around her. “That’s the only reason why ya married me, huh? I see how it is.”

“Well... that’s not the only reason,” Carol said before stroking his lower stomach suggestively.

The move made his hips twitch towards her, and he bent down and gave her a tender kiss. “Keep that up ‘n I can make ya very warm.”

She giggled and kissed him again before leaning against him. “I got some hot chocolate for you too, it’s over there.”

He glanced over and saw the other mug on the coffee table. “Thank you.”

“It’s the least I can do since you’ve made me a fire... and for letting me take your body heat.”

He chuckled. “Take all ya want, as long as I get to have ya cuddled up next to me.”

She rolled her eyes. “Oh take me now for I am swooning.”

He chuckled and kissed the top of her head. “So how did Sophia like their trip?”

“They had a great time there. She loved all the shows they went to and the food was amazing everywhere they went. She’s already planning on going again soon.”

“How much money did they lose?”

Carol giggled. “Carl lost about $200, but Sophia was able to win it all back in blackjack.”

“Atta girl,” he said with a chuckle.

Carol smiled and sighed into his chest, loving the familiar feeling of his hand grazing up and down her back. “I can’t believe we’re parents to a now married 25 year old... when did we get so old?”

“Don’t remind me,” he muttered. “I currently feel like I was run over by a freight train.”

Carol sat up and gave him a concerned look. “I told you not to chop wood if your back is still bothering you.”

He nodded and waved her off. “I’m done choppin’ wood for a while... ‘n if my back still botherin’ me by the time I need more then I’ll get one of those logs Soph always jabbers about.”

“The Enviro Logs?” Carol said with a giggle. “Hey, they’re better for the environment.”

“Don’t get how burnin’ recycled cardboard is good for the environment,” Daryl muttered before grabbing his hot cocoa and taking a few sips. 

Suddenly, Carol’s phone chirped, and she grabbed it off the coffee table before making a ‘happy’ sound. “Sophia just forwarded me the link to the Sam’s pictures.”

“Who?”

“The photographer they hired for her wedding,” Carol said before following the link. She touched the first picture and began swiping through. “Awww, she’s so beautiful.”

Daryl chuckled and leaned his chin on her shoulder as she began swiping through pictures. He could tell she was struggling to keep her emotions at bay, and he gave her shoulder a kiss in comfort as she continued moving through. When he saw a picture that caught his eye, he held his hand up. “Hey hey, stop.... wait...” He swiped back a few before he settled on a candid shot of Carol looking at Sophia with her wedding dress on. The window behind Carol created a glow around her from the sunlight, and it made her blue eyes shine. “I like that one.”

“I’m glad you do.”

“You don’t?”

Carol sighed. “I have so many wrinkles now...”

“I do too but that don’t mean you don’t think I’m any less handsome,” he said before sitting up and posing as if he were getting photographed for a Hollister poster.

She snorted and gave him a kiss on the cheek. “You’re so cute.”

“And yer beautiful,” he said before giving her shoulder a kiss and leaning his chin against it. 

She smiled and continued going through pictures. She stopped briefly at a picture of him and Sophia walking down the isle, and Carol gave him a grin before continuing through. Then she stopped again when she found a photo of him and Sophia doing the father/daughter dance at her reception. “I think that’s my favorite one.”

Daryl couldn’t help but smile at the picture, and he found himself thinking about his life during the last 20 years. He had met Carol in a bit of a cliche kind of way, where he was trying and failing to control his dog, and the German Shepherd yanked his leash out of Daryl’s hand before sprinting straight towards Carol and her then 5 year old daughter sitting on the park bench. Daryl had thought the kid was about to scream bloody murder, or was about to be scolded by the mother for releasing his dog to run around, or even both. But when he ran up to them, he was surprised to see the little girl laughing her head off and running around the bench as the dog played with her. When he tried to apologize to Carol, she waved him off with a smile, saying it was no big deal, and he wound up chatting with Carol for almost two hours on that bench. After that day, he couldn’t stop thinking about them.

He was able to convince her to take his number, though she seemed hesitant at the time (he would find out later that she had only recently been divorced from her abusive ex husband). It didn’t take long for them to start dating regularly, and soon, he was practically living with them. Spending any extra hour everyday to be with them. Then a year later, he and Carol married, and raised Sophia together into the lovely lady she was today.

He might’ve been aggravated with that dog in the beginning, but Daryl owed him his happiness he had today for running full speed literally towards his family. 

“You okay?” Carol asked.

He blinked a few times to keep the tears and bay and nodded before clearing his throat. “Ya know... I didn’t know how Sophia felt about me until she asked me to walk her down the isle.”

“What do you mean? She loved you long before then,” Carol said.

“I know, I know she did. But... I’ve thought of her like my own daughter since she was a tiny thing. I just didn’t know how she ranked me until... until she asked me.” He took a deep breath to control his emotions. “She told me that it didn’t matter to her that I wasn’t hers biologically, that I am her dad and always have been.”

Carol smiled and let the tears run down her face before she gave him a kiss before hugging him tightly. “Of course you are.”

He hugged her tightly before leaning back and meeting her gaze. “It’s scary how time has flown by us, ‘n how much older we’ve gotten but... at the same time, I’m so damn grateful I met you two at the park that day... and even though gettin’ older is taking its toll on us, I’m damn well looking forward to growin’ older with you.”

Carol smiled and kissed him. “I can’t imagine what my life would’ve been like without you Daryl, and I don’t even want to try to be honest. You’ve been the greatest thing that’s happened to me and our daughter... and I can’t wait to spend another twenty years with you.”

He smiled. “It’ll be fun. We can have wheelchair races down the hallway in the nursing home.”

Carol snorted and shook her head. “I love you dork.”

“I love ya too,” he said with a smile. He kissed her tenderly, but after a moment, things began to heat up, and he gently laid her on her back as he kissed her passionately. “Wanna make love in front of the fire?”

“Hmm, I don’t know. Have we done that before?” she said with a sarcastic giggle.

“A few times I believe, and if I remember correctly, that’s when ya make the most noise,” he said with a wink before lifting her shirt just a little bit and kissed her stomach. 

She giggled and moaned as he began to make his way up her chest. “Just don’t throw your back out again, okay?”

He snorted and gave her stomach a raspberry, making her shriek and laugh as he tickled her. “I’ll be careful, I promise.”

She smiled and pulled him back up so that he was face to face with her, and his body was covering hers. “Warm me up, my sexy lumberjack.”

He smiled and kissed her passionately before whispering against her lips. “Gladly.”

Ada’s Top 10 Films of 2018

Between Christmas shopping, baking a couple hundred cookies, and rewatching Bad Santa every December, I try to take a peek at critics’ lists of the top films of the year (even if I myself manage to procrastinate well into February to compile my own list each year). On December 31st a good friend and fellow writer published his list, the opening sentence of his blog proclaimed 2018 was the best year for film this century and that’s when I began to panic. 

Though I was far from finalizing my list, I had thought 2018 to be one of the worst years for film in recent history! I immediately starting chasing all the award season favourites plus other talked about films at TIFF 2018, and spent as much of January in front of a screen as possible. I hoped against hope that I somehow missed all the good films of 2018. 

A month later I will say this: 2018, it wasn’t as bad as I thought! However, after much brainstorming and revisions to the order of my list, I will say that not a single film stood out for me as the year's best, which is very rare. So here are 10 films (and then some) in not much of a particular order that I think should be talked about for 2018.

1. Widows 

I firmly believe Widows film came in under the radar considering all that it embodied. In a year of diversity in film, Widows is made by a man of Caribbean descent (Steve McQueen), written by a woman (Gillian Flynn), starting FOUR women - 3 of which are of a visible minority (Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Cynthia Enviro, and Elizabeth Debicki), and Daniel Kaluuya portrays one cold-blooded villain. And on top of that, Widows is good entertainment! I may have a soft spot for heists and ass-kicking women, but I’d like to think I know a good thriller when I see one. I feel that Widows didn’t get the love it deserved and so I'm mentioning it first. 

2. Hotel Mumbai 

I saw Hotel Mumbai last year and it is dated 2018 across the web, but it is coming to theatres soon and I assure you it’s good entertainment for your buck. I saw it in the midst of back to back films and long work days during TIFF 2018, worried that I’d accidentally nod off. Instead, I couldn’t close my eyes if I tried. Again this ensemble cast film is more about entertainment value that cinematic artistry, and I never compared the story on screen to historical facts, but what I took in was enough to stay with me and rank it amongst one of the best times I had in a movie theatre in 2018. 

3. Destroyer 

Destroyer is fresh in my mind having only seen it a few weeks ago. Due to the nature of my volunteer work with TIFF, it was one of the films this year that I kept walking into mid-movie (much to my dismay). I purposely avoided the ending of the film and then had no opportunity to see it again until recently, giving me lots of time to forget anything I might have accidentally absorbed. Fully aware that it was going to be a dark, depressing watch, I quickly found myself engrossed in the story reminiscent of the HK police dramas that I grew up with about divided loyalties and double agents. Director Karen Kusama pushes Kidman's character well past the point of likability but the story keeps you invested in the events as they unfold. That's when you know you've got a good story. 

4. Capernaum 

Also fresh in my mind is Capernaum, a Foreign Film nominee in this year's awards season. This film that looks at extreme child poverty from Lebanon is at once heartbreaking and endearing. The film follows young Zain but is supported by a host of complex characters, ch with a detailed back story of struggle and survival. Together they give the film a fullness and weaves a world where although individuals' actions fall into a decidedly grey area, no explanation is required to justify them. It is a world unknown to the majority of people who will see this film, but it is utterly engrossing. 

5. The Hate U Give 

This was a last film on my list of 2018 movies to watch before compiling this list and I'm really thankful I didn't get lazy and skip it. While there's no single aspect to make it truly stand out in awards season, it's a shame that The Hate U Give isn't getting quite as much love as Green Book nor BlacKkKlansman because it delivers a similar powerful message, from a different angle that actually made it the differentiator for me. The story comes from the eyes of young black teenager girl named Starr, wonderfully portrayed by Amandla Stenberg, and addresses an aspect of being a visible minority that speaks volumes to me: assimilation. Compared to other common themes (oppression, profiling, etc) 

6. Love, Simon 

When I think of light hearted, entertaining but impactful teen-targeted, coming of age tales, I like to compartmentalize them by the decade. Now maybe I'm getting too old, or maybe it's become so ok to be and do whatever you want that no individual story can resonate anymore, that I don't have too many examples from the 10's, but Love, Simon is definitely one of them. It's not heavy nor gritty, rather glossed over in fact (the main character even admits it), but the message shines through and it's a really fun film that I think will remain a crowd pleaser for years to come. There is a place in our hearts for movies like this one, it's easy to go over the top or fall flat in this territory but I think Love, Simon really hit the nail on the head. 

7. Isle of Dogs 

Wes Anderson + endearing tale about dogs, I mean, come on! None of my defenses would be strong enough to dislike this film! I wish I'd had a chance to rewatch it so that I offer you more than just a rehashing of all the things I love about Wes Anderson's style and trademarks. 

8. Pick of the Litter 

Perhaps 2018 was truly the year of the dog, not just in the Chinese Zodiac but in film as well. Pick of the Litter was my most memorable documentary of the year, I did not make it through the intro without tearing up (it was really embarrassing and thank god the friend I went to see it with was sniffling harder than me) It was truly a journey, and insightful too, it goes way beyond humour and cuteness, and believe me there was a lot of cuteness. The thing that hit home most about Pick of the Litter for me besides the idea of guide dog named Phil (and we still always wonder how Phil and his human are doing!) as how invested I became in the litter's story through the course of the film. 

9. Shadow 

Ok, here's my Chinese film of the year. Joke aside, Zhang Yimou's Shadow is not on this list merely because I need an Asian film to fill a quota. With the possible exception of Isle of Dogs, the films on my list this year were selected largely based on story over style... Except this one. This is all style, it's a visual stunner that really puts the director back at the top of his game. He devotes the film to a steely palette that's at once cold but exciting. Come to the think of it, the story wasn't bad either. 

10. Transit 

If you haven’t seen Transit, I have some advice for you. This is not a spoiler so please take it into consideration. Transit is adapted from the 1942 novel by Anna Seghers with a few modernizations that calls for a leap of faith. As an audience member, be prepared to suspend believe and it will make all the difference in your enjoyment of the film. I wish someone had told me this beforehand so that I didn’t spend half the movie trying to make sense of details that had little bearing on the plot. I spent days after the fact trying to decide whether I loved the film or it didn’t make any sense. Thankfully the conclusion I came to was that Transit is a lucid tale of love, loss, longing, and humanity. Characters and story mirror each other in early meanderings that creates an almost surreal existence contrasting against the harsh realities of events taking place around them. There is profound sadness, but there is also beauty. 

Honourable Mentions: 

You'll note from above my list of honourable mentions is getting to be almost as long as the top 10 itself (in fact it was probably just as long until I trimmed a few films off... You don't need me to tell you about Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther) 

I saw Destroyer, Capernaum, and The Hate U Give quite recently, but until I had, Shoplifters and Free Solo had firmly been in my top 10. 

 I'm typically not a fan of Japanese cinema, but there are always exceptions and Shoplifters was definitely one that defied the odds. It broke from the often tiresome mold (to me) of demure characters, restraint, and complicity that's often portrayed in that country's cinema. The message of making your own happiness and family being those that loved you most regardless of genetic ties was heartwarming and resonating. 

Free Solo ranked amongst the fictional narratives on my list for thrilling and edge of your seat viewing. It takes a lot to keep me wide-eyed griping the arm of my chair in the theatre in anticipation and fear for an hour and a half. I love heights and I was scared witless. 

BlacKkKlansman and A Star is Born are seemingly award show favourites, though not winning as many awards as they might have hoped, both have strong scripts, powerhouse talent, skillful direction for the former, and one of my favourite songs of the year from the latter. They truly are amongst some of the best films made in 2018. 

Vox Lux is one of those films that warrants a discussion after viewing, at least for me. Though it feels like the film scored points neither with critics nor audiences, there’s a part of me that’s drawn to intricate explorations of the selfish and narcissistic. Natalie Portman was great in the role in my opinion. To make an unlikable character worth watching is not an easy feat, especially when the possibility of redemption isn’t really on the table. Like Destroyer, it takes one hell of an acting performance and skilled direction to pull this off. I guess this is where some thought Destroyer nailed it, and pretty much no one thought Vox Lux did.

Everybody Knows (Spain, thought director Asghar Farhadi is Iranian) and The Other Story (Israel) were also amongst the most enjoyable foreign films I watched in 2018. I'm not sure if The Other Story got Canadian distribution but Everybody Knows is playing at TIFF Bell Lightbox right now for those who want to see it. Both are dramas centred around families. 

We're well into 2019 films now and I'm really hoping for some standouts this year, at least in my eyes. I mean, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood does have a July release date after all! As well, we're about to wrap another decade in film so even more lists charting the best of the last 10 years. But first, we got some more movies to watch!

Prefabricated, offsite or modular building is the method of construction whereby parts of a building — referred to as modules — are fabricated away from the building site, before being transported to the designated location for installation. This method has become increasingly popular and offers many benefits for the construction industry, as well as for homeowners.

Quick construction

As modular builds are prefabricated in a controlled factory environment, they can be constructed up to 50 per cent more quickly than traditional methods of construction. In fact, it can take as little as two weeks to assemble a modular home. This is because a controlled environment eliminates disruptions to the construction process, which can occur from external elements such as the weather. Construction projects can face major setbacks if adverse weather damages the products or site. However, this is eradicated in a controlled environment.
