In 1936, the book Our Princesses and their Dogs was published., which featured photos of of the Duke and Duchess of York and their daughters, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose, with their canine menagerie. This was prior to Bertie becoming King - when his life was simpler!

First impression

Honestly I wasn’t that impressed and a bit confused. I think that’s just the general reaction I have to any reboot of a show when they introduce a new character that wasn’t there before with no real explanation and we’re just expected to roll with it. I have no memory of if Lady Penelope had any interest in pugs or dogs in general in TOS, so I guess someone just inserted their posh dog headcanon OC? I also think there’s something uncanny valley about a perfectly smooth, painted texture CGI pug, so I couldn’t really decide if he was cute or creepy. All cartoon pugs I’ve seen are just like that.

The TAG magazine (you really had to be there to understand how weird it was) didn’t make things much better by constantly referring to him as ‘Bertie’ when Penelope only ever called him Sherbert. I don’t think she referred to him as Bertie in the show until after the magazine stopped being published. It feels overly picky of me to have pointed it out now, but perhaps it made me think that Sherbet was some sort of Scrappy-Doo gimmick that the show was trying to shoehorn in rather than an established character that I would look forward to seeing in episodes.

Impression now

BEST BOY. THE GOODEST DOGGO THERE EVER WAS IN CHILDREN’S TV. MOVE OVER PAW PATROL, SHERBET IS REAL HERO MATERIAL.

The best and only way a reboot show can convince me to love a new character is to make them relevant to the plot (give them something meaningful to do) and to develop their relationships with the already established characters, and somehow a tiny pug with no speaking role managed to do this. They could have easily kept him as an accessory for Penelope or a joke character solely for the purpose of annoying Parker, but they let him interact with other characters in different ways and it really made him into something more real. 

For example, some people he really loves... 

...and others he attempted to rip their throats out for the crime of messing with his car.

Get you a pug who can do both.

Favorite moment

Probably in Getaway when he’s left in the car with those joyriding theives and just goes absolutely wolf instinct on them. Gotta love a cinnamon roll who can absolutely kill when what they love is under threat. Also in Heist Society, when he can tell that it’s the Hood in disguise and attacks him.

Idea for a story

Sherbet wins Crufts, perhaps?

Unpopular opinion

I don’t think anybody has an unpopular opinion about Sherbet. Perhaps he can be seen as an unnecessary addition to the show because the majority of any episode would run exactly the same whether he was there or not, but who could argue against the addition of a cute dog???

Favorite relationship

I don’t usually expect much character development from kid’s shows (usually characters tend to keep the same traits and flaws throughout a series because the writers depend on the predictability of how they’ll react to certain things because it’s easier for them), but I’m so glad that they had Parker gradually warm up to Sherbet. He really went from “I didn’t ask to be a parent to this child” to “My brother in arms who I would charge into battle side by side with against the world without question”. 

They came to share one braincell that just says “Don’t mess with us and our friends or one of us will bite you” and I love it. They didn’t have to do that but I’m so glad they did, because seeing Parker and Sherbet work together (particularly against a mutual enemy who they show zero mercy towards) is absolutely brilliant.

Favorite headcanon

That he has a tonne more outfits than the blue tweed sweater we see him in. there’s no way that fashion idol Lady P stopped at dressing her pug in just one outfit. That dog has his own walk-in wardrobe at the bare minimum.
