I think my favourite interpretations of Berserker-class we currently have lie within characters like Lancelot and Hercules, and within Penthesilea.

I adore berserCú and Nightingale with my whole heart as characters, but as a representation of Berserkers they don’t do anything for me. Cú is not even a true Berserker at all, actually. Their Madness Enhancements are whack. Nightingale is a bit bonkers, sure, but this is not what I personally want to see in a Berserker.

Meanwhile, with the three I mentioned initially… I put Lancelot and Herc into the same category because they both seem like mindless beasts completely off their fucking gears. Their reasons for madness are different, and honestly even the way they “perform” it, so to say, seems similar while, in reality, they both manifest it slightly differently. Still, my point stands — their madness (enhancement) consumes them to the point they’re barely able or completely unable to speak. Lancelot shows any signs that he was once a person at all through rare uttered words and phrases; Hercules — through his actions (like the conscious choice to protect Illyasviel in F/SN).

Penthesilea, however… oh boy, this might be my ultimate fave in terms of Berserker-iness, even though I don’t actually like her much. Regardless — she acts crass and stern most of the time, sure, almost unlikeable even (unless you’re into that?), but she doesn’t really show any strong signs of madness unless specifically triggered by the very specific things she absolutely motherfucking despises, and when it happens, she loses her mind and goes completely apeshit. She goes SO apeshit that she stops discerning between the people she sees and thinks anyone in front of her at the moment is the A-person she despises. And you fucking know what? During her NP, she apparently uses her fucking teeth. I never noticed that, but I was pointed to that by a reddit thread about her. She gets so fucking angry and loses her mind so fucking bad that she starts gnarling, screaming and tearing away at the enemy’s flesh with bare hands and teeth.

This is the madness enhancement I like to see. Not “I’m a meanie now”, not “I say medically unethical things even though I’m a doctor and am obsessed with doctoring to the point of slight mental disturbance”. I want to see “I think I’m fine, but then I hear Achilles’s name and my mind goes fucking blank. My shit is flipped to hell and beyond.”

I just think it’s neat to see actual complete apeshit craziness in the class that’s supposed to be this way, instead of, you know, “jalter but with a knife”.

     A little something that will always make me a bit uhhhh about BerserCú is that his title is ‘Mad King’ instead of ‘King of Warriors’ and that he’s stranged with being called a King when... Literally one of ( Myth ) Cú Chulainn’s titles was King of Warriors...

     Not only that but his status as a ‘King’ was actually really important to Cú’s story and especially his death?

     Cú Chulainn’s death badly summarized: Cú Chulainn had way too many enemies ( like waaaay too many so I’m not gonna name everyone who was involved ) and they wanted revenge against him. So they made three enchanted spears to kill him and each of those spears was fated to kill a king. Cú already was weakened by breaking his geis of not eating dog meat. ( Parenthesis: It was a trap because he had other geis of not refusing honest hospitality so when he was given dog meat, he couldn’t say no. ) His enemies threw the three spears at him but the first one hit and killed Láeg, King of Charioteers. ( Rip Cú Chulainn’s best friend ) The second one hit and killed the Gray of Macha, King of Horses. ( It was the coolest horse on earth... )

     And the third spear killed Cú Chulainn, King of Warriors.

     But Cú Chulainn just doesn’t fucking die like that! First, he gotta laugh at his mortal wound, then tie himself to a rock with his own guts so that he dies while standing on his two feet. And he’s still holding his sword to face his enemies! Even after he dies, people wait up to three days to approach him because they’re all just scared that he’s not actually dead. Only when the Morrigan, in the shape of a raven, stands on his shoulder is that his enemies believe he’s dead and one dude ( one of the many Lugaids of the Ulster cycle ) approaches his corpse to cut off his head. But too bad! Because even after death, Cú is one badass bastard and his sword falls and cuts off that dude’s hand.

      And no, he wasn’t the King of any land and didn’t see himself as royalty even though he was of noble birth, but that was a title he earned because of the many great deeds he accomplished during his life.

     In other words, Cú Chulainn was metal af and deserves to have his King of Warriors title recognized more often. Thanks for coming to my TED Talk!
