Over the course of the last two or three weeks, spring has well and truly sprung here in Bergen.  Far earlier by a good three weeks than last year’s arrival so it was nice to see the old place coming to life while we were still in April.
The following are a few shots taken around central Bergen on the last day of April while we were still enjoying some sunshine and the first burst of colour around the city…

Night Time
A few days ago I figured it was time for night shots of Berge, now that it’s getting darker early in the evenings as the year draws to a close.  I took a trip to the Løvstien footpath which goes along the side of Mount Løvstakken and overlooks the valley of central Bergen, to get these shots of the city in the dark…

A Trip Back Home...
A Trip Back Home…
Tumblr media
Come September and the tourist season is more or less over in Bergen – no more cruise ships – so it was time to take a wee trip back home to Scotland for the annual hoolie.  In between going from one pub to another I inexplicably found myself on a bus heading north and, before I knew what was happening, there I was in Glencoe.
Being in one of Scotland’s most iconic spots I really just had to…

Summer Weather
For the last couple of weeks Bergen has been bathed in some rare but very welcome sunshine.  The temperatures have risen above 30C om occasion and there has been barely any rain for nearly a month – surely some sort of record in this part of the world.  The fantastic summer weather has meant we’ve been able to get about in Bergen and further afield to get some shots in the wonderful summer…

A Brief Trip Away
A Brief Trip Away
I was recently lucky enough to get my annual May trip away from Bergen and left for a quick visit to the beautiful city of Prague in Czechia with side-trips to Bratislava, Slovakaia and Vienna, Austria thrown in for good measure.  As usual a hectic trip but a great one.  The following are a few images taken in Prague, a truly beautiful city…

Finally...
Finally…
After what seemed to be an interminably long winter with snow all the way into April, we seem to have finally been treated to the arrival of spring.  While it will take two or three weeks yet before we see much in the way of greenery this far north, the temperatures have risen markedly and we have even been treated to some sunshine.  I took the opportunity a few days ago to make the most of some…

A Trip to Sotra
A Trip to Sotra
A few days ago we decided to head out for  trip to Sotra and some of the other island which form a large archipeligo just off the coast of Bergen.  Although the day was overcast and grey for the most part we still managed to get some decent shots of the multitude of islands, fjords, bays, bridges and isolated communities that make up the landscape in this part of Norway…

A Brief Interlude
Following on from the last post which we hoped would herald the end of winter, we’ve just had another cold spell yesterday with more snow as this seemingly never-ending winter drags on.  In between, though, we managed a few days of sunshine, albeit still very cold, which we hoped would maybe presage the start of something resembling a spring.  A wander through the Sandviken district of Bergen and…

A Last Blast of Winter?
A Last Blast of Winter?
After a very slow thaw which saw most of the snow and ice taking its time to disappear, yesterday dealt us what was, hopefully, the last wintry blast of snow before spring finally sets in.  Although this far north spring takes a while to arrive it’s unusual to get snow in Bergen this late in the year but it does happen occasionally.
Venturing out to the local woods and lake while the snow was…

Mount Ulriken in Winter
Mount Ulriken in Winter
With the snowy, cold, wintry weather continuing, it seemed like an opportune moment to ascend the tallest of Bergen’s seven mountains on Monday.  Brilliant sunshine, clear skies and chilly air meant the views were fantastic from the top of Mount Ulriken, which stands at 643m (2109ft).
Ulriken is far from the highest mountain in Norway but it rises more or less straight out of the sea and is…

It's Still Winter in Bergen
It’s Still Winter in Bergen
For the last couple of weeks we’ve been experiencing some not entirely unexpected winter weather in Bergen.  A small snowfall last week and some cold temperatures were followed up with a slightly heavier snowfall yesterday.  The first couple of images here are from last week and a visit to the Montana area, the rest are from the other side of the main valley, between the Ulriken and Løvstakken…

A Visit to Skansen
A couple of days ago we paid a visit to the Skansen area of Bergen.  Situated just behind the lower Fløybanen station this is an area of charming narrow streets leading up to the Skansedammen with its old wooden fire station.  Perched on a small flat area overlooking central Bergen, this prominent building and its pool, provide some good photo ops and some great views out over the city and its…

Winter Morning at Tveitevatnet
Tveitevatnet is a lake in Bergen a couple of miles from the city centre which always attracts a lot of birdlife, even when frozen over as it was when I visited a few days ago. I was lucky enough to get a few decent shots of several different species, some resident, some migratory as they clustered around the few spots where there was some open water and they could feed.  It was a gloriously…

The Return of the Swans
Every year around this time the migratory swans usually return to the lakes around Bergen and this year is no exception.
Luckily, in the local lake, we were blessed with the appearance of two different species.  As well as the usual Mute Swans there was a pair of Whooper Swans gracing the water this time and we managed to get some nice shots of these welcome visitors as they pass through…

Best of Bergen 2017
Since this will be the last post of the year I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and sign off with a selection of the best of Bergen in 2017.
Not necessarily the best photos, but some personal favourites.  In no particular order, either chronologically or in terms of preference, here are a dozen or so images from beautiful Bergen…
