A Last Blast of Winter?
A Last Blast of Winter?
After a very slow thaw which saw most of the snow and ice taking its time to disappear, yesterday dealt us what was, hopefully, the last wintry blast of snow before spring finally sets in.  Although this far north spring takes a while to arrive it’s unusual to get snow in Bergen this late in the year but it does happen occasionally.
Venturing out to the local woods and lake while the snow was…

Best of Bergen 2017
Since this will be the last post of the year I’d like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and sign off with a selection of the best of Bergen in 2017.
Not necessarily the best photos, but some personal favourites.  In no particular order, either chronologically or in terms of preference, here are a dozen or so images from beautiful Bergen…

Over the course of the last two or three weeks, spring has well and truly sprung here in Bergen.  Far earlier by a good three weeks than last year’s arrival so it was nice to see the old place coming to life while we were still in April.
The following are a few shots taken around central Bergen on the last day of April while we were still enjoying some sunshine and the first burst of colour around the city…

A Trip Back Home...
A Trip Back Home…
Tumblr media
Come September and the tourist season is more or less over in Bergen – no more cruise ships – so it was time to take a wee trip back home to Scotland for the annual hoolie.  In between going from one pub to another I inexplicably found myself on a bus heading north and, before I knew what was happening, there I was in Glencoe.
Being in one of Scotland’s most iconic spots I really just had to…

Summer Weather
For the last couple of weeks Bergen has been bathed in some rare but very welcome sunshine.  The temperatures have risen above 30C om occasion and there has been barely any rain for nearly a month – surely some sort of record in this part of the world.  The fantastic summer weather has meant we’ve been able to get about in Bergen and further afield to get some shots in the wonderful summer…

A Brief Trip Away
A Brief Trip Away
I was recently lucky enough to get my annual May trip away from Bergen and left for a quick visit to the beautiful city of Prague in Czechia with side-trips to Bratislava, Slovakaia and Vienna, Austria thrown in for good measure.  As usual a hectic trip but a great one.  The following are a few images taken in Prague, a truly beautiful city…

One of Bergen's top Attractions
One of Bergen’s top Attractions
Now that spring has arrived, the tourist on their cruise ships are coming to town and the temperatures have climbed (slightly), so, too, has the rain arrived.  Bergen is renowned as one of Europe’s wettest cities and so far this year shows no sign of losing that reputation.  So, what to do on a rainy day?  Well, you could do worse than pay a visit to the Bergen Aquarium.  In addition to the…

Finally...
Finally…
After what seemed to be an interminably long winter with snow all the way into April, we seem to have finally been treated to the arrival of spring.  While it will take two or three weeks yet before we see much in the way of greenery this far north, the temperatures have risen markedly and we have even been treated to some sunshine.  I took the opportunity a few days ago to make the most of some…

A Trip to Sotra
A Trip to Sotra
A few days ago we decided to head out for  trip to Sotra and some of the other island which form a large archipeligo just off the coast of Bergen.  Although the day was overcast and grey for the most part we still managed to get some decent shots of the multitude of islands, fjords, bays, bridges and isolated communities that make up the landscape in this part of Norway…

Winter Morning at Tveitevatnet
Tveitevatnet is a lake in Bergen a couple of miles from the city centre which always attracts a lot of birdlife, even when frozen over as it was when I visited a few days ago. I was lucky enough to get a few decent shots of several different species, some resident, some migratory as they clustered around the few spots where there was some open water and they could feed.  It was a gloriously…

Christmas Market in Bergen
In common with many towns and cities across Europe there is a Christmas Market operating in Bergen city centre this month.  Featuring the usual array of Christmas gifts, food and drinks, festive cheer, entertainment and a ferris wheel, Bergen Julemarked is open daily from 10am to 8pm.  The market is situated in the Festplassen area beside the Lille Lungegårdsvatnet artificial lake in the centre…

Fjord at Night
Store Lungegårdsvannet is an area at the head of the Puddefjorden where the sea curls round behind the city centre of Bergen and forms a large lake-like area.  This is surrounded by some light industry and housing for the most part, but also has the advantage of being at the foot of Mount Ulriken, the highest of the mountains surrounding the city.  When seen from the Florida area, this forms a…

Bergen by Night
Now that winter is more or less with us we can expect the unexpected as far as the weather is concerned in Bergen.  Some years we have lots of snow, some years virtually none.  That remains to be seen this coming season, but last night was rain and cloud free, though very cold, but it was the perfect evening to go around in central Bergen and get some shots that prove this beautiful city is just…

And Suddenly it was Winter...
And Suddenly it was Winter…
It’s hard to believe it’s mid-November already but, needless to say, Bergen has done its best to remind me.  The temperatures have certainly dropped in the last few weeks and, alongside the usual Autumn rains, we have already been treated to our first, relatively minor, snowfall of the season.
Although the snow disappeared fairly rapidly at ground level, a wander around the mountains surrounding…
