D Is For Dulcimer The dulcimer is a stringed instrument. Although there are many kinds of instruments known as the dulcimer, this particular one is known as an Appalachian dulcimer or mountain dulcimer. As far as is known, the Appalachian dulcimer is a purely American instrument. While it is similar to Scandinavian and German instruments, which are possibly distant ancestors via England and Scotland, its origins lie in the Scots-Irish inhabitants of Appalachia. It is thought that because of the lack of tools necessary to create fiddles, the dulcimer served as an easier instrument to construct and learn how to play. It became popular because of its being able to be played on a table or lap, and thus became popular as a parlor and porch instrument. The Appalachian dulcimer is also known as the teardrop dulcimer, because of its shape. The simplest form of dulcimer (pictured below) is this shape, with four strings, the two leftmost strings being tuned in unison. The most common tunings for the dulcimer are, from lowest to highest, or left to right, strings, are D-A-D, D-D-A, and D-G-D. Sometimes, for more minor-keyed melodies (or Aeolian mode), the dulcimer is tuned to D-A-C. In modern times, dulcimer melodies are usually transcribed in modes, rather than keys. The dulcimer can either be strummed or plucked, like a guitar. Also like a guitar, the dulcimer's neck is fretted. Generally, the melody is played on the top strings, with the bottom, or left, two strings providing a drone accompaniment. Probably the best-known singer to bring the dulcimer into mainstream popularity was Jean Ritchie, who is also called, by some, the "Mother of Folk," and influenced, among many others, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Emmylou Harris. Well-known contemporary dulcimer players include Doug Berch, Stephen Seifert, Bing Futch, and Wendy Songe. Additionally, Joni Mitchell, Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Cyndi Lauper, and Peter Buck of R.E.M. have also recorded with the dulcimer. Next: F Us For Flute Personal Note: I confess to acquiring this dulcimer on a random dare from a friend. It has turned out to be an excellent investment. https://www.instagram.com/p/CSP9BIgM_nwLwCN-M3NOnJFKmAAmhkPbW4soog0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Noelle nodded. “Yeah, we’re fine-”
“Neil's being held hostage!”

Bookmarker's Notes:
This fic is fun, that's for sure, but it's more than that. Noelle + Kendra's voices are clear, their identities, as we first see them, are distinct, and their observations + comments about the Foxes are exactly what I would think incoming fresh(wo)men might say. I love the combination of Kendra's misguided notion of the relationship between Andrew + Neil, the upper class(wo)men's multiple simultaneous conversations + the whole Who's Your Best Friend betting bit. Hope to see more from this author because I loved this work!

What Are The Different Types Of Bread Available Online?
Bread is an essential part of diet worldwide. For most people, it is the staff of life. It includes carbohydrates but is still the staple of the human diet since the Neolithic period. It is delicious, inexpensive, and filling. There are varieties of bread available in the market and online.
There is a world of online breads available beyond basic white. Every culture worldwide has its type of bread, including Australia’s iconic damper, a wheat-based bread traditionally baked in campfire coals, and mantou, a Chinese steamed bun made with white flour. Here are the other kinds:
Banana bread
It is moist, dense, and sweet that usually contains baking soda or powder. Introduced in the 18th century by bakers in the United States, they used pearlash, a refined form of potash, to create carbon dioxide in the dough. It also has a special day dedicated to it on 23rd February.
Baguette
No other product in the bread family, not even the flaky croissant, resembles images of the Eiffel Tower the way the baguette does. It is a long, stick-like loaf made with flour, yeast, water, and salt. The iconic baguette rises from those simple ingredients, distinguished by its feather-light interior, chewy crust, and topside slashes, allowing gas expansion during baking.
Breadsticks
These are popular and common variants found when you order bread online. Smaller than a baguette, breadsticks originated in the 17th century. Nowadays, you find restaurants serving them soft and warm topped with cheese and garlic, or as a dessert, with icing and cinnamon.
Brioche
It is a French sweet yeast bread loaded with eggs and butter. It originated in 1404. This bread is now famous for making hamburger buns, dinner rolls, and French toast recipes. People enjoy it as a golden, soft-as-a-pillow pastry.
Whole wheat
The whole wheat bread is a healthy range of whole-grain bread for the body. It has flour that uses the entire wheat grain, including the bran and the germ. It offers more fiber, protein, and vitamins than white bread. It also has a richer flavour and aroma.
Challah
This type of bread has eggs and appears in a braided pattern. It is essential for the Jewish sabbath and holidays. Originally called berches, it carries rich symbolism, from the poppy and sesame seeds sprinkled on top symbolises manna from God to the plaited shape representing love.
How to order?
Most bakeries sell them on websites besides their stores. It has become a trend to order things online, including food items, desserts, and other daily needs. If you want to order bread, look at the prices and compare them. The wheat bread price differs between bakeries. You also find variants in it with different ingredients.
Besides bread, order other products like cakes, pastries, tarts, biscuits, puffs, rolls, etc., from the website or app at reasonable rates. Online bakers deliver the ordered products to your doorstep instantly.

I’ve been sending @linane-art her 12 Days gifts and forgetting to post them. Whoops! So this was yesterday’s! She gave me permission to write in her absolutely beautiful Between the Boards universe, which she also kindly let me podfic. She puts up with my fangirling with great class. XD
Preview:
Despite knowing Kíli since they were small, and despite growing up constantly underfoot in Kíli’s family’s shop, Fíli knew almost nothing about Jewish holidays and observances.
He knew, from childhood, that Passover was extremely important and that it had something to do with the timing of his own family’s celebration of Easter. He recognized a few of the traditional songs, sung softly by Kíli’s mother and sister as they gently folded egg whites into the matzo shalet or filled hungry bellies with piping hot noodle soup and berches. But he was never invited for any of their holidays, nor did he invite Kíli to celebrate the various saints’ days. It felt disrespectful, somehow, to intrude on the very thing that made Kíli so different, made his family so special and warm, or to imply that Fíli’s own holidays were somehow more important.
He thought of the Jewish celebrations occasionally when Kíli was in hiding, wishing he could bring some sense of history back to his friend as Kíli slowly wasted away in the cupboard. But it was so dangerous just to whisper to each other; certainly, it would have been suicidal to actually murmur words of Jewish origins. Some things he could claim he spoke of to Kíli the cat, but not the traditions of Pesach or Shavuot.
Then, of course, they were running, hungry and frightened and determined, and there was no time to talk of tradition and loss.
Which was why, when tiny Mrs. Liljegren brought in her menorah for repair, Fíli had to ask when she needed it.
“For Chanukah,” she told him, serious as always. Laughter was hard to find in these first years after the world had attempted to destroy itself.

CDC January 2018 2: Oswald
January?! That's right! Patreon supporters were able to see each CDC entry an entire month before the rest of the internet! Please consider supporting me for perks like this and more! First redesign! I did a few redesigns for this challenge, to spice up some of my older characters. This one is of a REALLY old character... I think I made this waaaay back in middle school, though it very well could have been high school.
This is Oswald Berch, the knight! Originally he was generally just a bumbling knight, but now he was a rather unskilled knight-in-training. Though he was good hearted and well intentioned, the king took issue with him (Perhaps because his daughter took favor with him, I haven't decided why yet) and during a large battle, the king sent Oswald to the front lines. Despite being unskilled he served dutifully, but... Unfortunately died rather quickly during the fight. Rather than passing on, his spirit remained behind, clinging to his old suit of armor. He patrols the halls of the castle, reminding the king constantly of his guilt.

Bio-Bibliographies: King of the Pulps
H. Bedford-Jones (1887-1949) is one of the contenders for highest producer of fiction for the pulp magazines. Jones wrote 231 novels. He wrote 1141 shorter works broken down into 21 novellas, 372 novelettes, and 748 shorter stories. A guestimate is he produced a minimum of 25 million words.
Bedford-Jones wrote westerns, adventure, historicals, detective/mystery. A few stories bordered on the fantastic but he was not a science fiction writer.
King of the Pulps: The Life & Writings of H. Bedford-Jones by Peter Ruber, Darrell C. Richardson, and Victor A. Berch is a trade paperback from Battered Silicone Press. It came out in 2003. It is 316 pages. I can’t find what it cost originally. I want to say I paid $15.00 for it.

Part V: A Selection of HB-J Magazine and Book Covers
I have a fair amount of H. Bedford-Jones. It is hard to avoid him, especially if you pick up issues of Blue Book, Adventure, Short Stories, and Argosy. An area I have noticed where he specialized are historicals set in what I call the “puffy shirt” era – 16-18th Centuries. He wrote plenty of pirate fiction and swashbucklers in general. “The Buddha’s Elephant” is a favorite lost race story with a lost city of Alexander’s Macedonians in Central Asia. Another story of note is “The Shield of Arngrim” from Blue Book, August 1935. A tale of the Kensington Stone, Vikings vs. Indians in what would become Minnesota.
I need to read more Bedford-Jones in some of the pulp magazines I have as he generally delivers the goods.

Photographic Proof that People Are Disgusting in Restaurants
Usually, when a restaurant uses the phrase “under the table,” it’s to refer to the common practice of paying employees in cash, off the books. But in the case of the London Grill, it’s something else entirely.
Longtime London Grill owner Terry Berch McNally decided to clean the underside of the tables in her Fairmount restaurant this week, and the photo above documents what she found… under one table.
McNally says that the bits and wads of chewed gum came from underneath a six-top at the London Grill and adds that she cleaned her tables a few months ago, meaning this is what has accumulated since then.
“Gum should be outlawed,” McNally wrote on Facebook. “As we say a lot in this industry, what is wrong with people?”
A lot, Terry. A lot.
In case anyone reading this is unclear about how to dispose of chewing gum, here are some tips from an etiquette expert:
The best way to dispose of your chewed gum is to deposit it into the original wrapper, wrap it up, and toss it into an available trash can. If the wrapper is not available, a tissue or any other scrap of paper will do. [Ed note: Such as a paper napkin at a restaurant.]
Discretion is called for in this situation. The gum should be gathered directly from the mouth into the wrapper if possible. If the fingers are used, touch the tip of your fingers to your tongue to moisten them. This will keep the gum from sticking to the fingers and causing a sticky mess. Remember to wash your hands after you are done.
We do like the solution that this restaurant came up with to deal with the problem.

Another Amazing Kickstarter (Barb Barton's New CD) has been published on http://crowdmonsters.com/new-kickstarters/barb-bartons-new-cd/
A NEW KICKSTARTER IS LAUNCHED:
About this project
This CD is a fantastic collection of some of the best songs of the 70’s and 80’s, as well as my originals. What makes this unique is the eclectic mix of styles – it is totally me. I have been playing guitar and singing since I was five years old, over fifty years. So you can imagine the influences I have had, Led Zeppelin, Roy Clark, Nancy Wilson, Glen Campbell, Roy Clark, Sergovia, Michael Hedges to name a few. It is no wonder this record has a mix of folk, rock, classical, bluegrass, and even a choir.
“Barb Barton” stands out from her past recordings because of its diversity of style. Engineered and co-produced by Bill Bartilson, the CD features hot guest musicians Doug Berch, Annie and Rod Capps, Mary McGuire, Drew Howard, and the gospel choir Albert Strickland and Cho’Zen.
I love to tell a good story and you will find tales of Henry Dean and the Orphan train, a young woman who did everything she was supposed to in life only to find herself approaching 60 wondering who she really is, and of course the beautiful winter of Michigan in the originals I am recording. A little something for everyone.
I am in the studio now and am raising funds to have the CDs made. We are working toward completing the recording by the end of May and having a CD release concert sometime this summer. I would greatly appreciate your support in creating “Barb Barton”, my 7th CD.
Risks and challenges
When making a CD, the most common risk in not getting the project done on time due to the varied schedules of all involved. We are working closely with the musicians to make sure recordings sessions are set up to accommodate everyone’s busy weekends. We are on track so far and do not anticipate falling behind. I have built in a two month window to allow for any delays, projecting the CD will be out in July.
