OK but what about how (Valdor, EatD3 and Penitent spoilers)
Valdor is so unexpectedly affected by Sanguinius' death that centuries later as the King in Yellow he is trying to grow winged Blood Angels (which may or may not be intended to be sorta Sanguinius clones) to guard the City of Dust...

Do you ship...
Note in the ask:
He's a psyker (a psychic), and she's a pariah (a psychic null whose very presence hurts psykers).
Who doesn't love a tragic forbidden/impossible love?

I just finished Dune, and not sure which of my three options I should read next, so here's a poll (that inevitably won't really get any votes, so I'll still have to make the decision myself but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
Option 1 - Pariah by Dan Abnett - A book centred around Bequin, a character I liked from Dan Abnetts earlier books (The Eisenhorn trilogy), that goes for being a mind-bending thriller set in Warhammer 40k
Option 2 - The Iliad by Homer (translated by E. V. Rieu) - It's the Iliad. Ancient Greek story of Achilles' rage, and the horrors of the siege of Troy
Option 3 - The Infinite and the Divine by Robert Rath - An odd couple comedy about a pair of immortal, kinda-undead robots that hate each other. Also 40k

Oh shit, I'm not posting a primarch for once! Bequin is the best, change my mind. That's right you can't.

Alizebeth Bequin of the Inquisition. She is very interesting and a total badass. She is smart and resourceful, and has been trained to be a perfect inquisition operator in the Warhammer 40k universe.
She was an associate of Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn.

I am being so good and so patient waiting for Pandaemonium and the various tidbits— including the above— were so, so good for me and will have to do to tide me over. Particularly these!

Im not a big fan of EC characters but a few sometimes gets my attention. Teke the Smiling one is from Dan Abnett's "Pariah" novel. He's golden eyed and always smiling. He isn't in his armor and has been looking for the King in Yellow for many years. One of my favorite things about him is that his armor is rose petals, like ACTUALLY TRANSFORMS FROM ROSE PETALS. I think thats SO FUCKING rad of him.
Not just that he has 2 gold silk sashes that also become his long swords and hes just??? So cool??? What the fuck????
Like the Bequin Trilogy has some fucking COOL SM-related characters like Deathrow and his dog, Teke and Comus. I'm biased on Comus because hes baby and UUGHGHGHFHHFHF he fits so well with the narrative and themes i love u sm bequin series.

On of the downsides of being into characters who are traitors/betrayers/(their real identity is a spoiler) is that the most successful way for me to be recommended that work and follow through reading/watching it is to spoil just enough of the plot by telling me that character exists.
On the other hand if the work is really good than it doesn’t matter that I’ve been spoiled on that twist, there is enjoyment to be had in the difference between what I know and the characters don’t.

Where would you advise someone interested in reading 40k books start?
It depends on what you’re interested in about 40k. The books tend to be very faction specific, so if you’re interested in say the Adeptus Mechanicus, there’s (maybe) not going to be much reason for you to read a book about Fabius Bile. There are some 40k books that are commonly regarded as being more foundational to the setting in the early 2000s, some that are advancing the story and were published last week, and others that have recently become fan favorites due to their broad comedic and story quality. So, TL;DR, i can give more specific recommendations if i know what you like abt 40k.
“Classic” books that are approachable for complete beginners to the setting in my experience or according to trusted sources:
The Night Lords trilogy (Soul Hunter, Blood Reaver, Void Stalker) by Aaron Demski Bowden
The Eisenhorn, Ravenor, and Bequin novels by Dan Abnett
Priests of Mars and sequels by Graham McNiel
Books advancing the current ‘story’ of 40k in M42:
Dark Imperium, Plague War, and Godblight by Guy Haley, focused on the Indomitus Crusade
Fabius Bile: (Primogenitor, Clonelord, Manflayer) by Josh Reynolds
The Great Work, and Genefather by Guy Haley again, focused on Belisarius Cawl
The Dawn of Fire series (various authors)
Books i just like or heard really good things about
Twice Dead King by Nate Crowley
Infinite and Divine by Robert Rath
Ascension Day by Adrian Tchaikovsky
The Ahriman series by John French
Krieg and Siege of Vraks by Steve Lyons
If i missed any real bangers you can check the notes of this and i’m sure someone will pipe up😂

My pal Nick, who started reading the Horus Heresy in September 2023, is now on Eye of Terra after reading each book in the series in published order, and all of the Eisenhorn/Ravenor/Bequin books. 😭 This dude went from reading 0 books since high school to reading 30+ in a year. So proud of him, he’ll be done with the series in the blink of an eye.

(powered by Storygraph, will probably update these when december is over lol)
BEST OF
The Instant Fav: The Sapling Cage by Margaret Killjoy usually, "fantasy YA" is something i do not care about. at all. i didn't particularly care about teenage protagonists back when i was that age, i do not now. and run-of-the-mill european-medieval-coded fantasy also isn't my thing. at all. BUT when Margaret Killjoy, who is amazing and great and such a cool person, brings out her first real novel (after a bunch of novellas and short stories which i also enjoyed a bunch), guess i have to read it. AND IT'S SO GOOD. it's exciting and funny and tragic and hopeful and queer af and well written and i just really really loved it. go read it y'all. [favorite line]
The Slow Burn: Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer been meaning to read this one for ages, because i love the movie so much, although i heard people either like the movie or the book. and i did enjoy it well enough, read the next 2 books too, it was.. nice. i think i gave it 4.5/5 initially. and then i couldn't stop thinking about it. re-read parts, read about it, hyperfocused. people always go on about how they want a relatable protagonist, but i don't think i ever actually had a character like that. well, hello Biologist. she's just like me fr. if i were a biologist. anyway, this book tickles something inside me. maybe it's the autism. [favorite line] [another favorite line]
The Surprise Hit: The Magos by Dan Abnett when you ask the internet "which warhammer 40k book is a good starting point", the Eisenhorn trilogy usually gets recommended. what doesn't get mentioned is "well, that one actually belongs to 2 more trilogies and another novel and a bunch of short stories". started, felt entertained enough to continue, had my fun. they're not great, the first 3 Eisenhorn ones have the weirdest-ass pacing, Eisenhorn himself is a dramatic bitch, but overall good enough. Ravenor trilogy is ok. the short stories inbetween range from :shrug_emoji: to good enough. (Bequin on the other hand is really really good) and in comes The Magos. suddenly the pov character is not some larger than life inquisitor doing god's the emperor's work, but the saddest wettest little nerd way in over his head. and he hates all this daemon- and chaos-bullshit and all the guns and the blood and just wants to go home to his books and he cries and he pukes from all the gore, and his ex wife is there too, and he mouthes off to FamousTM ScaryTM InquisitorTM Eisenhorn because it's all bullshit, and you just wanna wrap him in a blanket. and of course he saves the day eventually. i'd die for Valentin Drusher. [favorite line]
The Old Fav: Arbeit und Struktur by Wolfgang Herrndorf sorry to the english speakers, but this one is german only. it's not even fiction. it's the blog of an author after he got diagnosed with a brain tumor, documenting his last few years, slapped into a book after his death. i don't know how many times i've read this one over the years. going on 10 maybe? twice this year for some reason. and it hits me every time in a way i can't put into words. one of my alltime favs. mildly funny (?) sidenote: i can't for the life me of get into the fiction writing of this guy. i tried, multiple times. sorry dude.
