SILENCE (Law Trafalgar x Reader)

(You accidentally make something very dear to your captain)

"Cora-San, i can't sleep," little Law yawned, sitting up, making sure his blanket was wrapped around him enough to keep him warm. Cora-San turned around and sat beside Law, "is it the noises that are keeping you awake?" He asked, and Law nodded. Cora-San smiled, "lay down" Law did, Cora-San placed a gentle hand on Law's head, "Calm," He said then again he removed his hand motioning it away he said, "silence!" The noises were gone, little Law giggled before placing his head back on the blanket and immediately fell asleep.

Law stared at his room wall blinking the memories away. Cora-San always made it easy for him to fall asleep now the rain was slamming on the window of his room and Law couldn't sleep at all.

Meanwhile you were in your work-room fixing a machine that you have been working on for months. "What are you doing up late?" You turned your head towards the door to find Bepo standing there rubbing his eyes, "Oh, sorry did I wake you up? I was being quiet." He shook his head, "No, I just woke up because of the rain." You nodded getting back to putting the last pieces of the small objects together, "yeah, the rain is very loud tonight, Captain doesn't it like it either. Do you want me to make you something to drink, Bepo?"

He shook his head again, "Nah, I'm fine just don't stay up late, you'll be tired in the morning, okay? Goodnight."

"Sleep well, Bepo." With that he left the room and you placed the last pieces together and stretched your arms up and walked a bit in the room. A huge smile on your face as you tested the machine and it worked! You were excited to show your captain the machine you made especially for him.

You knew he probably wasn't asleep when you walked to his room and gently knocked on the door, "come in." You heard Law's voice on the other side before you entered the room to find him now sitting on his chair with a book open on the table, "uhh, sorry for interrupting you this late captain but I need to show you something and it's a- I uh- it's very important and I'm sure you will like it."

Law stood up and walked towards you standing near, "what is it?" He asked and you forwarded your arms. He saw the small machine in your hands, "this? What is it?"

"Uh-" you scratched the back of your hair, "let me show you, you just push on this little red button here and..." You pushed the red button and a light blue covers the room, "Silence." You said with excitement. Law gasped at the sound of the rain hitting the window was nowhere to be heard, he looked at the window and could notice the raindrops still hitting the window but no sound was heard.

"...uh, it's a Silencing machine I made, it blocks all the sound within 20 meters from you so when you are trying to block the sound of the raindrops which you said that doesn't help with your sleep you can use it to Silence the whole room or it also can be helpful when you are trying to work and the crew is being lou-"

You didn't get to finish your rambling because you gasp at the sudden action of Law hugging you tight, he never did that. You just stood there confused but managed to hug him back tapping on his back for comfort, "Thank you so much, thank you so much for this." You smiled, "No problem, Captain." What you didn't know is that you unknowingly reminded him of his Cora-San with this small machine.

You unexpectedly joined the ship together with the heart pirates. Yes, while it was confusing for the crew to get used to a random recruit all of the sudden, you did become the secretary of the ship. Mostly to help Law, in other ways as well.

The conclusion of the crew on how you became such an officer right after joining was that their captain, Law, had fallen for you. Which wasn't true but maybe just a little, he just couldn't afford sending you off board right after blowing up inside you, so he might as well take you in for extra help. (In extraordinary ones)

But who were you to refuse his help? Even if his intentions seem diabolical, he'd atleast help you raise your child. It wasn't your plan to carry an offspring these days, especially with a pirate who seems like a magnet for danger.

While you realized that you were carrying his child, you had been thinking of aborting them (ˢᵉʳᶦᵒᵘˢˡʸ), though atleast thinking about it, it would help you with the population lost of your own race. Law already knew that, of course, he himself was a doctor, so it wasn't such a biggie whenever you have your pregnancy problems.

Fortunately, the hardest parts were keeping it out of his crew's league's, Law insisted that his reputation would get tarnished if his crew ever found out, so he tries ro delay their knowledge about you as far as he could, maybe until the baby was born.

He insisted to name your kid Lami if it ever was a girl, telling you that it was his early sister who unfortunately, met her death at such a young age. If it ever was a boy, he'd say he wanted it to be Cora(zon), or Rosi(nante), he didn't explain why, but doubting the name he picked firstly, he was definitely somewhat special to him.

The baby was revealed to be a boy, based on the ultrasound that Law performed. You picked their name, cora!

Law had someone going on aswell, his love for you. Yes, of course he'd need that in order to bear a whole child with you, yes. But the feeling was growing deep inside his heart now, and not by his dick.

The ship was also resurfaced to a new country dock, Law let his crew wander around a bit and went to go stock baby items with you. Yes, he turned the old engine room that no longer has pipes into the baby's nursery, but of course disinfecting it and cleaning it first. When i tell you, he almost emptied his wallet with everything he bought.

He also took you to stroll around the country, buying you several new clothes or maybe some accessories. Of course he never forgets to explore the lovely grassfields and flowerfields with you. It almost felt like he took you out on a date (he did).

Nothing ever is complete without his crew butting onto the scene trying to figure out if you and Law are on kahoots! You and Law were awfully close these months, yes, of course in order to check you for symptoms or simply staying by your side while multitasking his paperwork. And considering that Bepo ends up walking in on Law's office while you were there too made him included in the hottest gossip on the Polar Tang!

Little Cora was born! Law had held Cora in his arms, almost spilling happy tears across his crying form. Law approached you and slowly, carefully placed little Cora into your arms as you two smiled happily together.

It was also the day that the affair between you and Law was introduced into the crew, along with Cora. You were happy, the happiest of all, specially because you delivered a child, together with someone you loved, and the fact that no one judged you in this ship for your appearance.

Of course, your son ended up inheriting your horns, it made itself obvious when you had delivered him, showing signs of a little thorn by his forehead. You weren't happy as he might be treated out of his league, but considering that Law sworn to protect him no matter what, made you cheer up. The crew threw a welcome party for little Cora as a welcome to the heart pirates!

Law had made it official with you, swearing that he would forever adore you and his child.

6 years had passed, even when Law still sailed out in the vast sea, he had built out a house for you and his dear Cora. He regularly calls you on a den-den mushi, hoping to hear your voice and cora's, asking how you have been. Law visits you atleast 2 times a month, while the Heart pirates still may not be disbanded, he still kept you company.

How did I forget to mention that, you and Law had been married? Yes, a year ago, before sending you off the Polar Tang to ensure safety, Law proposed to you. He truly vowed to never leave you and his child ever, never in a million years will he abandon the two of you.

— Everyone trusts you as their problem solver, but you always choose the worst moments to give a motivational talk.

— If necessary, you will stop everyone to sit down and talk about each one's problems, you can avoid many unnecessary confrontations thanks to that.

— Due to your power of oratory, you always take charge of persuasion if it is possible to negotiate with enemies since Law prefers to keep a low profile on some occasions.

— Bepo often helps you and you consider him your fluffy assistant.

— Those scars look rough, the story behind it is traumatic and the truth is that they didn't expect you to open up to them like that.

—Thatch and Ace usually come hand in hand and are the ones you interact with the most and the ones who cause you the most problems due to their concerns.

— Although they are never a problem, even if they feel bad in the middle of a fight you will sit down and talk to them (at least you'll sit) while they continue the fight.

— Izo tends to be more reserved like Whitebeard, so it's not as easy to help them, but they still know they can count on you and your loyalty.

— You are usually quite busy since whenever visitors come from different factions, they almost necessarily go to you to seek solace if they have had problems.

— Dragon is a little skeptical at first and doesn't care much that you have opened up for them even showing old battle wounds.

— The others, on the other hand, are grateful for someone who cares about their mental health, especially Sabo when he recovers his memory.

— Maybe after a while Dragon will appreciate the talks you give him, maybe you've opened the shell of him where he keeps his heart.

— Ivankov finds your attitude quite funny when in the middle of a mission you completely change when you see someone in trouble, even if they are an enemy you will offer to help them.

— Koala is always pulling on you if you extend your talks too long, it's okay that you want to help but you have a very important mission to complete and the government is after your head.

— They don't understand how you can be so serious about your work and then be so stupid as to find the slightest thing funny (you laughed because a piece of bread fell out).

— But it's good because you help them cope with the tension of being enemies against the most powerful people in the world, some of the stress or other things have decreased since you managed all their problems and they are grateful.

Hanahaki Disease LawLu AU, where for the disease to end, one has to voice their feelings and hear them returned.

Marigolds are believed to represent the sun's warmth and light, and their radiant colors are thought to guide the souls of the departed back to the world of the living.

Law never thought himself worthy of love even though he carries the signs that people love him on his very skin. It is much harder to ask for love from someone he sees as a bright light, with a much bigger future than him.

Those on death's door should not eclipse the sun with their love. So he stays silent.

The pain gets worse, the bloody thorns cut into his lungs. He can use his power to take them out and watch as the roots of his love spread through his body. It would be so easy to cut them out, to never feel anything again, but that would be a betrayal of Cora's sacrifice. So he stays silent and takes it. On some days, it is a refreshing reminder that he can feel.

The petals of golden marigolds fall from his lips as he coughs, napkins come away with blood.

Death and Love rest at his fingertips.

His crew worries about him, and Bepo is the only one who knows and suffers right along with Law for it. He knows that nothing said will convince his stubborn captain to tell the truth.

It's two years of pain, two years of hiding his truth on that island as he holds on to Luffy's precious strawhat.

Then Dressrosa comes, and the whole world finds out that he is in love. Doflamingo taunts with the flowers that managed to break through Law's skin on the days he was captured and had no power to control his disease.

Luffy knows. That is the worst, he was so careful not to bother him, not distract from the mission at hand.

He waits to be yelled at, called a fool, maybe even called disgusting for feeling such a strong love that it breaks him.

Luffy does none of those things. He picks Law up, yells at Mingo, and promises that they will find whoever made Law hurt this much!

He does not realize that it is him and that being this close, only makes it worse.

Luffy loves everyone, but everyone is not Law. It's not enough.

At least his revenge will be done, and he can die as a feasting ground for flowers that symbolize the life he's lived.

Then he is passed on to Robin, and she knows even more. She has seen how smitten he is with their captain and she needles, she prodes. Until Law breaks and confesses everything to her.

He makes a vow to die, to live, to do everything he can for Luffy. All the speeches that he built up over the years are brought to the surface.

Robin smiles. "Maybe you should tell our captain that he feels more for you than you give him credit, Traffy."

If they survive, maybe he will because what is there after revenge but not life?

Law sat leaning against the Sunnys mast, his hat pulled down as he observed the blonde cook of the starwhats. Blackleg-ya had at first reminded him far to much Cora, the hair, the cigarettes, the hearts that followed him when he spoke and twirled around a woman. That was where the similarities ended, where Cora had been clumsy and accident prone, Blackleg-ya acted as if he was born upon the sea. His moves were graceful and fluid even when fighting. Almost as if he was dancing.

The blonde cook was kind. He hid it behind his shouts and swears, but Law had seen him. Had seen how attentive to everyone's needs he was, he only made a show of it to the women aboard. It was a shield to protect himself.

The silly wanted posters really didn't do the man justice. He was beautiful. He watched as the man tipped his head back and laughed, his golden hair catching in the sun, a glowing halo around his head. Eyes crinkled in the corners, his mouth wide and happy. He wanted to hear his laughter and wanted to be the reason for his smile. Law felt his heart skip a beat.

“Shit,” Law had fallen in love, he was fucked.

This was not a part of his plans, he may have asked for this alliance but when it was over they would be enemies both after the same thing…that is what it would be if he by some miracle made it out alive.

Sanji watched Law stick his Ōdachi into the ground as he snuck to his knees, the sword being the only thing holding him up at this point.

They had managed to defeat Blackbeard. Avenging Ace and the Heart Pirates. Sanji sat next to the man he had fallen in love with. Something he never thought he'd do, the only other man he was in love with was Luffy, but the whole crew loved their captain with everything they were, so it didn't really count. You couldn't help it.

Law sobbed, his tears wetting the ground beneath him. Law was finally free to mourn his crew, his friends, and his family. Sanji rubbed the man's back. He wasn't alone. After what felt like hours, the black haired man's tears ran dry and slumped against Sanji shulder. He wiped the man's wet checks with his sleeve, Law looked tired, as if he just wanted to sleep forever.

“What now? What do I do now? I've always had a goal in mind, defeating Doflamingo, justice for Cora, freeing Wano taking down Kadio. Just as I found a new goal, Blackbeard destroyed everything! Yet now he's been taken care of, Bepo and I joined your crew, now I'm left without a puporpes,”

“You have time Law, just being around Luffy I know you'll find it eventually, he's good at that sorta thing,” Sanji brushed his hand against Law black locks, this was probably as close as they would ever get. He would take whatever Law would give him. Sanji had no plans on telling him how much he had fallen in love with the surgeon of death.

With his sharp features, inky black hair, and the tattoos across his skin, how could he compare to him? Sanji knew Law was smart, he was a surgeon for fucks sake! What did he a mear cook have to give to this man who could have anyone he wanted?

The school doesn't have school buses bc I said so (no I am not cruel it's just out of my budget /j). So Buggy takes the responsibility to keep them comfortable and entertained while they wait. Croco and Mihawk meeting this charming (and clown looking) blue-haired guy and they start courting him. Shanks gets dragged in on the courting bc of Luffy. Also he was already courting Buggy. I didn't write their process of courting I basically skipped and went,, their wedding will take part in a Goth castle. And the design are all sunshine and rainbows (literally). Sanji, Usopp, Nami, Vivi, Zoro and Luffy being in a class along with other kids. Franky, Robin, Jinbei and Brook are in higher classes. Chopper is atom. Not here in the world yet. Perona is like, 2-3yrs older than her brothers so. Yeah *awkwardly shuffles* (I love perona I swear-). Implied Zosan. Some rando: but you didn't imply shi— Me: Shhh I did. *gaslighting*. Law is also there in the classroom with lower grade strawhats. He's suffering. He only attends 3 days a week tho, he's mostly homeschooled bc of his sickness. He's homeschooled by Cora. (I do not play by canon's rules with ages bc i live in my own world) They both tease their brothers (Sanji and Zoro) about their crushes on each other. The heart crew is there. Bepo is a dog, a very fluffy one. Kuina is alive. Kaya is there, same classroom with Usopp. I have no idea how to continue this lmao, but I do hope you find this interesting bc Buggy is 100% great with kids and probably teaches well bc he is a big nerd and makes lessons interesting. (Also, the whole reason why I wrote this instead of letting the idea slip through my mind like the others is bc the image of two goth men courting a clown looking mf was funny to me. So here we are lmao. The way I wrote this makes Shanks look like he's the person they let into their open relationship twice lol I'm so sorry 😭😭)

That's really sad, I really like this idea (though I see Shanks and Buggy more as siblings, but I understand the idea of Shuggy) It's fine that this became about so many people, I really like this.

Teacher!Buggy sounds so cool, you know that he's the flashiest and maybe one of the craziness of the things he'll do to get his students good things that will boost their learning. He knows that every kid might not have the same learning paths as others.

How many classes does this man teach? Who knows, too many for how much he gets paid. All teachers needs to get paid more.

I would think Jinbei and Brook being other fun teachers in the school, like Tom could be as well!

I really like this idea, and the imagine of two gothic men trying to court a clown-looking mf is really funny to me as well.

An AU where Cora took Baby 5 and Law

I would lie if I say that it didn't cross my mind when I was watching Law's backstory...

Cora had bitten off more than he could chew. He knew that much. But he couldn't let Law die, so young, TOO young to die because of a disease. When he was taking off, the thought of leaving Baby5 as well made him doubt it would be a good idea. The more he pondered, the more he convinced himself he should take her as well. She was the same age as Law after all.

During their search for the cure, Baby 5 was surprisingly accepting of the conditions and constant traveling, she beamed at every praise which made her easier to manage than Law, but also made her too gullible to leave on her own.

(I imagine the whole thing with Cora's death and the fruit went as it did in canon)

Baby 5 becomes Law's first mate (sorry bepo :'( it just makes sense), she got along with the crew great. She babied Bepo a bit too much, she joins Penguin and Hachi when they engage in shenanigans and dare I say swooning over (both men and) women. Whether because of hurd mentality or her genuinely liking women, no one knows

I think though, and you can fight me on this, she would be less eager to please, since i believe doffy groomed her into being this insecure woman who only sees life worth living off some can use her...

Law stood in the common room on the Polar Tang and he was sweating. It had nothing to do with the fact that the temperature raises while it was under water. "Dammit" he shouted. He saw the looks from some of his crew but it was your heated gaze that caused him to lose his shit. He quickly pulled his eyes from you when he swore your eyes glimmered a slight shade of glowing red at him as an almost evil smirk graced your facial features. A knowing look that he was still flustered from the night before.

FLASHBACK

"I swear to God, Law... ", you growled.

"You can scream and yell... you can hate me all you want but in the end it's US... you and me... and because you want to flaunt your body all over the New World is NOT an excuse to be wreckless!" He growled back, backing you into the corner of his office. His hands slamming on the wall on either side of you as he glared down at you. You had wandered off at the last port without taking a transponder snail and hadn't returned until early in the morning, drunk. To say your Captain was pissed was an understatement.

Your heart skipped a beat and you stopped breathing at the position he had you in, but you had to school your nervousness. He couldn't know your dirty secret of wanting to be underneath him.... to be the one he woke up to every morning or his partner in life. You closed your eyes and took a breath. As soon as you felt him back off even an inch, you used the whole strength of you to shove him off.

That was the first time in years you made him conscious of you as a potential lover. You were a drug... you both had tried to leave each other so many times...but always came back to one another in some shape or form... He hated you at that moment for reminding him he had other needs other than revenge. He had to avenge Corazon before he could think of any personal wants or needs. The man had sacrificed his very life for you both. You were ruthless and brought out the Surgeon of Death's vengence, but.... the lustful thoughts and your sinful,flirty nature....years of pent up sexual tension. He would never though because you had been groomed to be Doflomingo's lover. You were 16 when Corazon took you and him away from the Donquixote family.

Corazon had saved you both and you had lost a father figure together. He had made one last wish before his death...

Dammit if he didn't want you at least once before your daring plan against Doflamingo... once to have you yell his name as he filled you up over and over so that if anything he'd be able to leave a piece of him with you.... yeah it was creepy but he'd been keeping up with your cycle... tonight would be prime to give you something to remember him by.... you weren't going to fight Doflamingo and if word got back on who ruined the Warlord... your name will have disappeared.... you'd be safe, it was already decided. But dying knowing a little bit of him survived within you... was bliss.

So if it was decided he would die for vengance of Cora... then why not? He knew from your interaction last night that you had yearned for him the way he did for you. "Fuck it", the Surgeon of Death muttered as he turned tail to your quarters. What he didn't expect was your absence. He checked your quarters throughly and then went to the kitchen... of course... but you werent there either. If anywhere you would be in his office. His room... was always your safest place to go.

You were sitting on his bed, reading something when he came in. "Babygirl...", he breathed your nickname as he saw you had the latest volume of his favorite Manga in your hands.

"Figured it was the best way to approach you", you grinned, "Got it on that island I was 'flaunting' my body on..."

Law chuckled as he shut his door behind him and locked it. Penguin assured you'd not be able to break it after he fixed it from last night's fiasco. "Babygirl..." he started and stopped when he saw your frown.

She has so much maternal love to give, even outside of her own crew- a lot of the younger Strawhats seek out her presence during their alliance

Definitely a Mama Bear type- very sweet and warm, but if you hurt her kids she will destroy you

Law can't cook, however well intentioned, or at least they can't cook unsupervised - things keep getting burnt, other things aren't seasoned enough, and worst of all they make steak well done - there've also been a few fires that their crew immediately scrambled to put out.

Kirin's conked out from spring allergies again and this time Reiji's inconveniently caught something too, so they're both down for the count. Law and Rio begrudgingly agree to keep their bickering to a minimum so they can make something for their bedridden idiots.

Rio's as awful at showing them the ropes as Law is learning because they're both too stubborn for their own good; the soup miraculously catches fire while they're arguing, Rio easily starves it out by removing the oxygen but Law's still staring at it with their eyes glazing over.

Law didn't quite connect the dots from his kitchen fires to Corazon before this but now that they have noticed he can't stop thinking about it. Thinking about how they can't even do this one simple thing right and how disappointed Cora would be.

That, on top of the stress of everything else going on that week - Kirin and Reiji getting sick, probably some other things falling behind schedule or something breaking on the Tang that needs fixing - ends up being the straw that breaks the camel's back.

Law angrily throws in the towel, tells Rio he can just finish it himself if he's so good at it, and stalks off to go have his meltdown somewhere private. Bepo and Shachi find them about an hour later stuffed into a broom closet because Kirin and Reiji are taking up their bedroom for the time being.

They let him let it out, bury their face in Bepo's fluff to scream for a bit, and eventually coax Law into getting some fresh air. Law comes out of the sub to see Rio smoking against the ledge and asks if they should really be wasting time up here when she should be getting a pot of soup ready if she wants to make it in time for Kirin and Reiji's supper.

Rio tells him he's out of his mind if Law thinks that he's going to waste food, but that there's no need to drain the initial one anyway since he's already ladled out the burnt flavor - Rio replies to their silence by saying 'yes, you can do that' and Law tries to hide their fluster.

Law then asks why Rio didn't go after him, since 'all that emotional vulnerability junk' seemed to be Kirin's crew's whole schtick. Rio raises an eyebrow and responds with the question of would Law want to be emotionally vulnerable with them in a time like that and laughs at the face Law makes.

Rio tells him that's more Reiji's territory and that feelings as a whole aren't particularly their area of expertise. She continues, saying that he also knew that if Law didn't get this done today then they'd continue to feel awful about it for weeks because that's just the kind of person they are, so they'd better get back to the kitchen to finish it properly.

Law watches Rio walk past him and throw away his cigarette, staring at his back for a bit - Rio's almost through the door when they feel a weird tug in their chest and the blue light around them fades. They narrow their eyes at Law, who just says that they should thank him for removing the carcinogens in their lungs.

They get into another argument about Law being "a weird little rat" but for the rest of time they're in the galley it's entirely peaceful.

"𝐈 𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐄𝐃 𝐎𝐍 𝐀 𝐖𝐇𝐈𝐌." - headcanons/musings on Law's impulsive desires to help people (and leading into a further analysis on him supposedly not being a "good person".). As with every hc/musings thing I write up, this is way too long and includes Law novel spoilers.

I'm still slowly working my way through the novel again but spent some time this afternoon just flipping through my notes on it, and it occurred to me that literally every time we've seen Law say he "doesn't know" why he did a thing and/or "it was only a whim", it really is as simple as because he's a good person who felt compelled to do so.

Aside from the notable going to help Luffy at Marineford, there are four instances of this particular word choice in the novel alone.

-- 𝐅𝐔𝐋𝐋 𝐀𝐍𝐀𝐋𝐘𝐒𝐈𝐒 𝐁𝐄𝐋𝐎𝐖 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐔𝐓.

Exhibit A: Law saves Bepo from Penguin & Shachi, then proceeds to bring him back to stay with him and Wolf. Bepo asks why Law is so nice to him and we see then-13 y/o Law musing, The reason I am so nice? I myself have no idea. "I acted on a whim," I simply answer.

Exhibit B: Law saves Wolf after an accident with one of his inventions leaves the old man with life-threatening injuries. Wolf, with his whole "We're not friends! This is a give & take system- you saved me, so now I owe you" mindset seriously pissed Law off with this. Mostly he's offended that Wolf would scrutinize Bepo, Penguin, and Shachi's intentions like this and counters that it was only natural the 3 wanted him to live; he'd taken all of them in and given them a home. Wolf asks Law what his motivation was, then, and Law gets very flustered and stutters his way through a response. "Hmm... Me... As a beginner doctor, it is my duty to come to the aid of any dying person... Le... let's say it's like a whim for me!"

Exhibit C: The 4 boys saving Pleasure Town from Artur Bacca. Rad thanks them all and Law simply responds, despite the injuries they'd all attained, "Oh, it's nothing, we acted on a whim." (16)

Exhibit D: After the boys set sail and earn their first mentions in Northern papers for putting an end to a pirate gang that's been going around kidnapping children to sell into slavery, the paper notes, "I acted on a whim!" These were the only words the captain of the crew of the "Heart" had uttered before resuming the sea aboard his submarine. (presumably 20+)

Now, first of all, let me just take a second to say here how much I love this kid for doing these things. I think it's really easy at this point to be like "Okay, yeah right, Law, everyone knows you're just a goofy kid with a bigger heart than you'd like to admit, just fess up already" - but. Given how early we see Law express the sentiment that "Anyway, I was never what you would call a 'good person'"(within the first 20 pages of the novel), here's the thing. I really don't think he's so much embarrassed/denying that that's his motivation as it is him honestly not realizing that's why he does the things he does.

We know he's an overthinker and needs everything to have a reason/meaning, from Cora-san deciding to help/(love?!) him to trying to figure out "how should the situation evolve" re: his new relationships with Wolf and Bepo. He does this whole in-depth "what was Cora-san to me?" reflection thing, asking questions like "Will I ever be able to carry affection for someone like that again?" He actually admits a lot of stuff to himself he'd never say out loud throughout the novel. But he never really ponders this beyond the "the reason I am so nice? I myself have no idea." which tells me it's seriously just never occurred to him. (Probably because, by thirteen years of age and no more than 20 pages into the novel, we see him think to himself "Anyway, I was never what you would call a 'good person'." in a way that suggests this was something he'd worked out and accepted a long time ago. I would venture to say even before the fall of Flevance, but that's a second write-up to follow here in a bit. &lt;3

@idiotsonlyevent this is exactly what is driving me to madness about them. because the entire “love and relationships are wholly transactional” thing that law does is so ~sneakily~ important to understanding his character. in that he never says the give and take part out loud but thats very obviously how he sees the world.

like obviously the one two punch of everything™️ with flevance and seeing doffy in action brought all that about because i highly doubt he felt that way before flevance happened, but i’m sure that’s where the death of the ‘unconditional love can exist’ happens for obvious reasons. and like you mentioned it continues into his relationship with cora. i’m sure the first part of their little journey, law was constantly thinking “what does he want from me, what is he going to get out of curing me of this” until the drunk nighttime crying and stumbling event happens. and while i think that obviously affected him and it’s what opened the door to that mutual very soft affection, as soon as cora died it’s right back to love as a transaction. one, because of how he died and two, it would be so much harder to keep that idea of unconditional love enforced when the person who was inspiring it is not around anymore to help keep reinforcing it.

(also side note not to bring up law’s catholic and survivor’s guilt AGAIN but i think it’s probably much easier for him to be able to compartmentalize cora’s death as cora was a saint who was on a mission who saved law for a grand purpose and reason and law now owes it to him to finish his unfinished business so he can rest in peace and have died for something. because it’s a way of grasping some measure of control over the situation and his feelings. instead of having to face the reality that cora was just a messy 26 year old who loved him more than anything and that he didn’t want law to do anything except live and be happy)

like it’s so important that in the law novel (which i haven’t read in full yet but i’ve read the cliff’s notes) but the fact that in it wolf’s (law’s fourth caretaker after his parents, doffy, cora) whole catch phrase is literally “give and take”. and while it’s pretty much all but directly stated that wolf is a lot like law and that he just says that as an excuse to be kind (saving laws life after he found law half dead in a cave after law had to remove some of the amber lead from his liver alone with no anesthetic after running from minion island for three straight days without stopping oh my god he was only 13 god and saying that he did it so law could help him with his inventions) and that he says it to law, bepo, penguin, and shachi as an excuse for them to be kind to each other and the other people on minion island when they all have their reasons to be misanthropic.

like even with his own crew who obviously love him more than anything in the world. thanks to that one piece of fanart by the way that pointed out that he’s been with bepo, penguin, and shachi longer than anyone else in his life that’s still causing immense psychic damage. but to me it always feels like he HAS to return their love and loyalty to him by putting himself in between them and every single threat they come across. leaving them behind on punk hazard, trying to get between them and blackbeard even though he’s too hurt and exhausted to keep fighting because he cannot handle losing anyone again. until bepo literally has to pick him up and run away with him and beg him to trust them to take care of themselves. he has to owe them something, has to give them something for all of that undeserved love and kindness and what else but his own life could be enough for that.

but no it drives me crazy that he has all of these rules that he’s so insistent upon to himself, but he also almost never follows them because the actual act of being owed something for owing someone else (and the way he would feel emulating doflamingo) is completely untenable and he would hate it. but he can’t help but insist on it because control as a trauma response is literally all he knows how to do. it’s even died into his devil fruit, he has complete control of the area around him as long as him room is active.

anyway tl;dr law’s unwillingness to believe that unconditional love can exist because if it can that means it can be taken away again is driving me insane for the millionth time in two months. how are your mornings going.

something something very funny how when they meet back up in punk hazard, law is continuously baffled by the way luffy instantly seems to trust him and see him as a good person worthy of putting in trust in. and while that just an inherently very luffy trait i’m sitting here like.

law. your first two and so far only in person interactions with this man have been. 1) fighting together on the same side in a friendly show off contest with the marines. 2) you saving his life at great personal risk to yourself and your crew when literally no one else could have. if it were not for you carefully putting his organs back together he literally would have died. my brother in christ you held his literal heart in your literal hands and put it back in his chest and healed him. and didn’t ask for anything in return or every hold it over his head?

i was fully prepared for law to like…bring that up on punk hazard for his standard “give and take, you owe me a favor reasons because showing emotionally vulnerability by asking for help is scary” before growing out of it and learning that he doesn’t need to pull that shit with luffy. but he’s doesn’t????? he never brings it up and brushes it off when luffy tries to thank him???? and then wonders why luffy thinks of him as someone who heals and is kind first and foremost and chooses to care about him on purpose????? smartest fucking idiot on this show i’m so sick of him.

How would you describe in your words Law's "hidden" personality? Like not the one where he's always seriously and grumpy but the one he shows to a small number of people?

Okay but any Law questions like this get top priority, I don't make the rules, I'm sorry!!

Law has A LOT of trauma, so his grumpy personality is a defense mechanism used to protect himself. He doesn't trust others and is afraid of getting hurt or losing a loved one. The ones who are closed to him (for example his crew) still see a bit of this side, but have come to accept it as part of him and love him anyway.

Now as for his true personality, he is a bit of a nerd. We see this both as a child and in some cases as an adult. He loved to learn about medical knowledge as a child, even ignoring parades and festivals in order to stay inside and read. We also know he is a huge Sora the Warrior fan and has a love for ninjas (so far as to be disappointed when he met a true ninja).

He's also a softie when it comes to cute things! Both Bepo and his sister were his soft spots, he loves them both dearly and would probably do anything for them. Now, of course, he won't admit it and stays tough.

Speaking of which, the reason he stays tough is due to psychological trauma. He witnessed the death of hundreds of good people done by morally good people! This led Law to believe that good people die and that he can't be good. This is later proved when he met Doflamingo and his family, he saw bad people surviving and living generally happy lives. Remember, he was 10 years old when this all happened, so in his mind, he concluded he must be bad in order to live.

This thinking transfers to his adulthood as well. Again this is shown when he hates being called a good guy. It seems silly, but trauma literally makes people think the oddest of things, and for Law, this thought became his reality.

In conclusion, Law was a nerdy boy who loved his family and Sora the Warrior. He has a soft spot for collecting cute toys and figurines and wants to do good in the world by being a doctor. He was hurt by people who were represented to protect him and he saw that bad people were able to live. The whole event of Flevance and meeting Doflamingo warped Law's mind a lot more than what people give credit for.

I could honestly talk more, but these are the important aspect I wanted to mention. I hope one day we can see Law mention Flevance more, I just personally feel it got overshadowed by Cora-san. Yes Cora was his hero, but he pushed all his anger and frustrations on avenging him, I want to see the same for the people of Flevance.
