📚 Hi! I'm Noah avid reader since age 6 and always happy to discuss books! 📚

I read almost all genre with sweet tooth for fantasy and sci-fi. I also have a growing interest in murder mystery and horror. Lots of queer fiction. I'm also catching up on my classics.

Mostly adult and some young adult but I have enjoy middle grade from time to time.

I especially love Terry Pratchett, Victor Hugo, Agatha Christie and T J Klune.

I read in both english and french, english not being my first language but I'm close to fluent.

Here’s Another Dozen Great Books I Read in 2019:

Jane Eyre Charlotte Brontë (1847) It’s hard to believe that I haven’t read this before now.  I’ve seen any number of filmed versions of this and still I forgot who was locked in the attic and what role said person played in this story.  I’ll not forget again.

Attic Katherine Dunn (1970) From the author of Geek Love, this is her debut novel, an experimental work that is confusing, surprising and perplexing.  And absolutely memorable.

The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearn Brian Moore (1955) Thank heavens for New York Review Books.  They are responsible for bringing some very impressive works of literature back into publication and here stands one of them.  Heartbreaking.

There There Tommy Orange (2018) The author is Arapaho and his debut is a rapid read about a group of disparate Native Americans getting ready to attend a pow-wow contest in Oakland, California.  You can’t help but hope that none of them manage to make it there, but the reality of it is, many may not make it out of there.

The Liar’s Club Mary Karr (1995) I never have decided if I hated this book and the cast of characters or if I just try not to believe that people can do what they do to one another.  This might be funny if it wasn’t a true story.  I’ve not worked up the strength to read her two other autobiographies.    

Little Women Louisa May Alcott (1868-69) here’s another classic I’m only just now getting around to reading.  I was so impressed by it that I read a non-fiction book about the making of the novel and the importance it still wields on today’s world along with Alcott’s two sequels: Little Men (1871) and Jo’s Boys (1886).  Here’s a remarkable fact about Little Women: it has never once been out of print since it was first published 151 years ago!

Amal Unbound Aisha Saeed (2018) This may be a Young Adult book, but it captivated me.  It is the story of a Pakistan girl who, at age 12, becomes an indentured servant. It takes place in the 21st century.

Grant & I: Inside and Outside The Go-Betweens Robert Forster (2016) As a huge fan of The Go-Betweens, my love for the band may raise my pleasure for this book about the band in comparison to non-fans.  

The Immortalists Chloe Benjamin (2018) Three siblings learn the exact day when they will die through a medium.  The question is: do they live their life according to that date or was fate always what it was?

Obama: An Oral History (2009-2017) Brian Abrams (2018) Oral histories are favorites of mine, they tend to present an almost alternate view of history.  This book demonstrates that the staff worked hard to achieve a quality they felt was happening in terms of the inhabitants of the White House.

An American Summer: Love and Death In Chicago Alex Kotlowitz (2019)  There were some astonishing facts in this book about guns and death in Chicago but the most surprising fact seems to be the author’s propensity to get involved in situations that only seem to make matters worse for all parties involved.  I know the author is beloved, but it seems to me he gets in over his head in a way that really makes you wonder why he cannot see what it is he is doing.

Wanderers Chuck Wendig (2019) A massive 800 pages in length, filled with numerous characters all of whom are careening towards an end that makes you turn each page faster and faster.  Yes, it is kind of like The Stand but it is altogether different.  Still, it is an apocalyptic setting and it includes characters you can love and those you can hate.  Even though he was a good guy, I still cannot stand the rock star.  Not exactly the kind of novel I’m attracted to, it was considerable fun to read.

Ipse dixit. Mica vero. Tipo che voi, per fare bella figura, in una conversazione dite che «Il fine giustifica i mezzi», appellandovi all'autorità di Machiavelli.

Solo che Machiavelli quella frase non l'ha scritta da nessuna parte. Come d'altra parte la famosa sentenza «Eppure si muove», attribuita a Galileo, che l'avrebbe pronunciata uscendo dal Tribunale dell'Inquisizione nel 1663 (come sapete sosteneva che era la Terra a girare intorno al Sole, non viceversa). Ma anche questa frase Galileo non l'ha mai pronunciata, se l'è inventata lo scrittore Giuseppe Baretti, nel 1757, un secolo dopo.

Ma a volte le citazioni altrui generano addirittura delle doppie gaffe. Come Oscar Farinetti, il quale ha citato «Come diceva Goethe a forza di ripetere una roba questa diventa vera». A parte che non era Goethe a Goebbels (altrimenti a Farinetti non sarebbe mai passato per la testa di citarla), ma in realtà non l'ha mai pronunciata neppure Goebbels. Però a forza di affermare fosse una frase di Goebbels è diventata di Goebbels, come afferma appunto la sentenza di chissà chi.

Per non parlare dei filosofi greci, lì non si capisce mai chi ha detto cosa. Perfino la famosa risposta di Socrate «Conosci te stesso» non sembra sua. Viene attribuita a Solone, a Talete, a Chilone, a Femonoe, vissuti prima di Socrate. Insomma, per non sbagliarsi è meglio dire che un giorno un filosofo greco la disse, chi esattamente lasciamo perdere. Idem per la famosa frase di Massimo D'Azeglio «Fatta l'Italia, bisogna fare gli italiani», è stata espressa in forma molto diversa, a sintetizzarla così è stato Ferdinando Martini nel 1896.

«Quando sento la parola cultura metto mano alla pistola», disse Joseph Goebbels. Sicuri? No, neppure questa, come documenta Stefano Lorenzetto in un libro appena uscito, intitolato Chi (non) l'ha detto? (Marsilio). La frase è infatti di Baldun von Schirac, capo della Hitler-Jugend. Così non è di Maria Antonietta «Se non hanno più pane, che mangino brioche», forse l'avrà detta, forse no, ma in ogni caso l'autore è Jean Jacques Rousseau. Come non è di Mussolini «Dio, patria e famiglia», che a intervalli regolari crea molti subbugli e contestazioni, dovete prendervela con Giuseppe Mazzini.

A volte sono i film ad attribuire le frasi erroneamente. Nel film Apollo 13 Jim Lovell, interpretato da Tom Hanks, pronuncia il famoso allarme: «Houston, abbiamo un problema», ma a dirlo è stato un altro astronauta, Jack Swigert.

Quanti di voi avete sentito dire: «Preferisco il paradiso per il clima, l'inferno per la compagnia»? L'avrà detta sicuramente Oscar Wilde. Però l'ha citata come propria Mark Twain nel 1901, ma anche il politico Benjamin Wade, quindi boh. Ma neppure è di Oscar Wilde: «Posso fare a meno del necessario ma non del superfluo», ma la citazione è attribuita spesso a Alphonse Karr, ma è di Voltaire. In compenso Voltaire non ha mai detto «Non sono d'accordo con quello che dici, ma darei la vita perché tu lo possa dire». Non ce n'è traccia in nessuno scritto o lettera di Voltaire.

Non vorrei deludervi troppo, ma Sherlock Holmes non ha mai detto: «Elementare, Watson!». Non la trovate in nessuno dei romanzi di Conan Doyle. Solo ne Il caso dell'uomo deforme, ma in modo leggermente diverso. Watson dice a Holmes: «Semplice!», e Holmes risponde: «Elementare!».

Non si salva ovviamente Charles Darwin, lo scienziato più frainteso in assoluto. Non ha mai detto che gli uomini discendono dalle scimmie, per esempio, casomai gli uomini sono scimmie, e deriviamo tutti da un antenato in comune (l'antenato in comune tra noi e uno scimpanzé è vissuto cinque milioni di anni fa). Soprattutto lo si nomina sempre per spiegare l'evoluzione come «La sopravvivenza del più forte», ma è una deformazione di Herbert Spencer, teorico del darwinismo sociale, un'interpretazione erronea che piacque molto a Adolf Hitler.

La teoria dell'evoluzione parla infatti della sopravvivenza del più adatto, non del più forte, concetti completamente diversi. Non per altro i dinosauri si sono estinti e più adatti erano i piccoli e deboli mammiferi da cui noi primati ci siamo evoluti dopo sessanta milioni di anni. E nell'Italia di oggi non è che prevalgano i più forti, dagli influencer ai politici, ma i più adatti. All'idiozia collettiva dei social. Come vi stupirà sapere come Darwin non abbia mai parlato di «evoluzione» ma di «trasformazione».

E quanto sono belli certi aforismi di Ennio Flaiano, tipo quando scrisse che «I fascisti si dividono in due categorie: i fascisti e gli antifascisti». Oppure: «Ho poche idee ma confuse», come disse Flaiano. In verità entrambe le frasi sono di Mino Maccari, però bisogna ammettere che attribuirle a Flaiano fa molta più scena.

«Dio è morto, Marx pure, e anch'io non mi sento molto bene». Lo sanno tutti, è di Woody Allen. Col cavolo, è di Eugène Ionesco. E per finire, chi non ha citato la celebre gaffe di Mike Bongiorno «Ahi, ahi, ahi, signora Longari mi è caduta proprio sull'uccello»? Solo che sembra essere un'altra leggenda metropolitana, perché non c'è nessuna registrazione a provarlo, neppure ai tempi di Youtube. Insomma, pure l'uccello di Mike Bongiorno era falso.

Giancristiano Desiderio per il “Corriere della sera”

Una volta Indro Montanelli confessò che quando era incerto sulla paternità di una citazione tagliava la testa al toro e l' attribuiva a Montesquieu che considerava così autorevole da aver potuto dire praticamente di tutto. Sulla fallibilità della memoria umana e sull'escamotage montanelliano è costruito il libro di Stefano Lorenzetto che non saprei dire se è più divertente o più istruttivo: Chi (non) l' ha detto (Marsilio).

Le cose che scrive Lorenzetto, che Mario Cervi chiamava l'Oracolo - scoprite voi perché -, vanno lette sempre con considerazione, talmente è preciso, scrupoloso, enciclopedico al limite dell'infallibilità. Per capirci: questo «dizionario delle citazioni sbagliate» ha la bellezza di ben tre indici: i presunti autori, i nomi, le citazioni. Si va da Gesù a Nereo Rocco, da Agostino d'Ippona a Carlo Cottarelli, da Benito Mussolini a Donald Trump, da Francesco d' Assisi a Moana Pozzi con il risultato, per dirla con una citazione, che «il naufragar m'è dolce in questo mare». Così il modo migliore di leggere il libro-dizionario è scorrere l'indice delle citazioni. Qui viene il bello.

Prendiamo un classico: Giulio Andreotti. Era bravo nelle battute e negli aforismi, quasi quanto Ennio Flaiano.

Senz'altro sua è «il potere logora chi non ce l' ha», che va quasi a braccetto con «a pensar male si fa peccato, ma spesso s' indovina».

Quest'ultima, però, non è di Andreotti ma, forse, del cardinale Francesco Marchetti Selvaggiani e il giovane Andreotti, come ricordò lui stesso, la sentì per la prima volta nel 1939, pronunciata dal porporato all'Università Lateranense.

Tuttavia, nello stesso anno la frase apparve nelle cronache milanesi del «Corriere della Sera» e ancora il 9 giugno 1969 nella rubrica del Proverbio del giorno: «A pensà maa se fa maa, ma se induvinna». Fu, però, Giovanni Malagodi a identificare la frase con Andreotti quando in un' intervista nel 1977 disse che il democristiano dava dei giudizi sugli uomini sostanzialmente veri, ma era un po' troppo incline ad abusare del «detto toscano» che «a pensar male si fa peccato ma spesso s' indovina».

Altra citazione: «Dio è morto, Marx pure, e anche io non mi sento molto bene». Enzo Biagi, che ricorreva non poco alle frasi celebri ed a effetto, l'attribuì a colpo sicuro a Woody Allen e per ben due volte su «Panorama» nel 1992 e nel 1996, ma la frase è, invece, di Eugène Ionesco, drammaturgo del teatro dell'assurdo, anche se non si sa né dove né quando l'abbia effettivamente pronunciata. Il che è un po' assurdo.

Come, in fondo, è un po' assurda la storia della frase più celebre di Mike Bongiorno che Mike Bongiorno non disse: «Ahi ahi, signora Longari, mi è caduta sull'uccello!». Per iniziare la Longari, campionessa di Rischiatutto , non esiste perché il vero nome della donna è Maria Giuliana Toro, che nel 1998 rivelò: «Mai pronunciata quella frase. Mica per niente: io stavo lì, no? Ho sempre smentito anche Bongiorno. Ho rivisto le registrazioni di tutte le puntate. Niente di niente.

�� buffo che io sia ricordata per un falso clamoroso. Potenza della televisione. Non è vero ciò che è vero, è vero solo quello che la gente ritiene sia vero». Ma la frase piaceva così tanto che alla fine Mike, anni dopo in un'altra trasmissione, disse veramente la frase che non disse mai. La verità è che la citazione ha un suo fascino e, come diceva Jorge Luis Borges, «la vita stessa è una citazione», sempre che l'abbia effettivamente detto, avverte ironicamente Lorenzetto. Ecco perché la citazione perfetta è quella non scritta: non è vera ma è verosimile e per questa sua potente qualità alla fine è di fatto un mito.

Il montanelliano «turatevi il naso ma votate Dc» è leggendario. Il grande giornalista scrisse l'editoriale sul «Giornale» il 4 maggio 1976: temeva il sorpasso del Pci sulla Dc e invitò i lettori a turarsi il naso e votare i democristiani. Da quel momento in poi la frase di Montanelli è diventata un modo di dire per dire che a volte, per evitare guai peggiori, bisogna fare di necessità virtù. Sennonché, non solo la frase non era di Montanelli, ma di Gaetano Salvemini e risaliva, addirittura, ad Adolf Hitler, ma in quello storico «fondo» il giornalista non la scrisse. Eppure, tutti citiamo Montanelli, proprio come Montanelli citava Montesquieu. Vien quasi da correggere Borges: la vita è una citazione sbagliata.

Video Porsche's Museum Storage Facility Hides Some Rare Beauties By: Anthony Karr

Yes, theoretically, you can drive some of these cars.

We’ve seen some great cars at the Porsche Museumin Stuttgart, including the super rare 901, different 959s, and many, many others. It turns out there are tens (if not hundreds) of quite interesting vehicles Porsche is not currently displaying or hasn’t displayed at all yet. There’s a secret place where all these beauties sleep and that garage is the star of TheSpeedhunters’ latest video, which takes us on a 13-minute tour around the Porsche Museum storage facility.

The man who currently holds the key to this automotive heaven on Earth is Benjamin Marjanac, who works with Alexander Klein. The two allowed TheSpeedhunters team to photograph “this absolute stash of Porsche history in peace and quiet, at night.”

“This isn't the first story about Porsche's storage facility, and it won't be the last. But this dream garage on steroids is constantly changing, so no walk through is ever the same. Madness. We join Beny for a POV tour of the not-so-secret bunker,” TheSpeedhunters team says.

Interestingly, Marjanac says that about 20 percent of the cars currently parked in the secret garage are driveable within 30 minutes, including one of the Porsche 911 GT1s. The video walks us through quite a lot of GT cars from all generations, several prototypes and test cars, a number of race cars, and - surprise! - a few examples of the Mercedes-Benz 500E hand made by Porsche.

The storage facility was opened in 2012 and before that, the cars were split across various different locations throughout Stuttgart.
