Bengaluru Ch F: Stefano Napolitano [7] def. Seongchan Hong [9] 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP/WTA Joint App
S. Napolitano's offensive showing in the last two sets could neuter any of S. Hong's defensive shots. This way, the former could catch the latter off-guard in both the net and the baseline while utilizing the open court, making S. Hong's defensive efforts unsustainable. The said passes or volleys not only contributed to his break point creation or conversion, where S. Napolitano converted 50% of his break points despite both players having 4 chances to break, but also limiting S. Hong's options for the final shots that caused his 25% break point conversion rate.
Furthermore, S. Napolitano also appeared firmer on serve. Landing 55% of his first serves, he still managed to win 84% of his first serve points, 15% more than S. Hong as he also went clutch on serve despite the ninth seed's offensive efforts toward the end of the match, as well as his 6 aces. However, despite both players having their own second serve problems, S. Hong's 4 double faults faded his second serve winning percentage 1% lesser than S. Napolitano.
This marked S. Napolitano's second career Challenger title, his first since the Ortisei Challenger 2016, propelling his rank to 160 live. Their next tournament will be the Pune Challenger, where S. Napolitano will face wild card Ramkumar Ramanathan, while S. Hong will face Maks Kasnikowski in the first round. Form-wise, this could be a tough match with a chance of either match becoming a classic, likely boiling down to their pressure points handling as a result. Should still be an exciting one as well!

It's interesting that we're now reaching the point where sports tactics are starting to reach the apotheosis of play style.
Bazball (as much as I hate the term) is effectively the progression of Australia's run per ball strategy in the 90s and 2000s, which I don't think is the actual name for it but oh well.
Gegenpress is effectively a modernised version of the pressing game played by Graham Taylor in the 80s.
Guardiola's style of play is an end point of a line of thinking about possession based football that started with Vic Buckingham's time at Ajax and Barcelona, then, latterly, iterated on by Rinus Michels and Johan Cruyff.
Mourinho’s style is the ungraceful conclusion to defensive football, originating, in part, from Helenio Herrera.
The last IPL season being a complete run farm is something of a peak in the four different strains of tactics that can be used in T20 cricket. Perth Scorchers between 2013-17 were a peak of low scoring, highly controlled cricket. RCB, the long standing headline team of hard-hitting batsmen.
It's pretty neat

S. Napolitano's position became firmer at the start of the second set as a reward to his more offensive approach. Right in the first game, he went after S. Hong's forehands, where the latter's forehand error created his break point before its conversion (1-0) thanks to his forehand winner catching S. Hong's forehand off-guard, which denoted how defensive the ninth seed became. Without any further ado, S. Napolitano held his service game to 2-0, and had not looked back since.
However, S. Hong tried to inflict some damage from the net, with a working volley that set himself one point apart. It did not make the necessary damage considering S. Napolitano's ability to hold his service game to 4-2 by then. The Italian seventh seed then kept the momentum going through another stellar volley finish even if S. Hong came up with a forehand response to his previous smash all the way before holding his serve to 5-3.
Afterward, S. Napolitano's ballstriking capability became undisputable, where his backhand pass allowed him to lead one point on the ninth seed's serve. Three points later, he somehow had a match point as a result of outhitting S. Hong, which was immediately converted thanks to S. Napolitano's backhand winner to take the third set 6-3, winning him his first Challenger title since 8 years (his second career Challenger title, overall).
