In addition, for women who are ALREADY healthy (i.e. NOT obese, diabetic or experiencing horrible PMS), long term low-carb diets and/or not eating ENOUGH fat with their keto meal plan can be MORE stressful-not less-for your body, specifically your hormones.
Long-term low-carb diets can cause you to overproduce cortisol and norepinephrine. It can create an imbalance that increases pressure on the hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal glands.
Unfortunately, it can result in symptoms of HPA-Axis Dysfunction including:
Difficulty attaining a healthy weight
Less energy and fatigue
Feeling unrested (even if you get enough sleep)
Constipation, bloating after meals and gut issues
Needing caffeine to feel “normal” or function
Insatiable appetite or complete lack of appetite (imbalance)
Anxiety, stress or low mood
Poor sleep
Craving/thinking about sugar or carbs
Poor workout results or recovery
Amenorrhea or horrible PMS
Not feeling like your “self”
  Low carbohydrate diets can also impact the hormone Leptin-necessary for turning ON reproductive hormone function (like your period). Even if you ARE eating enough fat, leptin is turned on by carbohydrate metabolism, and in the long-term may be decreased through a very low carb intake.
No One Size Fits All
There really is NO one-size-fits-all approach to diet.
Some women thrive off extremely low carb diets, while others lose their period, or even gain weight after an initial rest. It all depends on TONS of other lifestyle factors like:

For this reason, I’m a big advocate of a modified keto diet for many of my own clients interested in balancing their blood sugar, regulating their hormones, detoxing off sugar, or experiencing bloating or SIBO-like symptoms from carbohydrate intake.
What it entails?
A 7-30 day “keto reset” followed by a transition into a “modified keto,” incorporating BALANCE with a little more starchy carb and/or fruit to compliment their higher fat and moderate protein diet.
Keto Reset: 7-30 Days
Eat:
Higher Fat with a variety of healthy fats (aiming for 50-60% of intake being from fat)
Moderate Sustainable Protein
Lots of Greens and Low-starch veggies for their carbs, sticking to 20-30 grams of “net carbs”)
Modified Keto-Longer Term
Eat balanced at each meal:
Healthy Fats with Each Meal (1-2 servings, and VARIETY-not just butter, coconut oil and bacon every meal)
Sustainable proteins (the size of 1-2 palms of your hand)
Lots of Greens
Starchy Carbs/Fruit (Incorporate approximately 1-2 additional servings of starchy carbohydrate and/or fruit back into your diet daily
The best part? No counting or ketone monitoring necessary.
By the time my clients reach the Modified Keto stage, 7 to 30 days later, and are re-introducing carbs, they are MORE connected to their body and how it feels-naturally.
They recognize when “brain fog” sets in, or their SIBO symptoms (bloating) flares, or when they feel like they have a lot more energy and strength in their daily life. They are better able to self-regulate the just-right amount of carbohydrate and timing for their body (for instance in the evenings before bed, or after a workout).
It won’t come overnight, but if you stick to the philosophy of “balance” and tune in to HOW YOUR BODY FEELS, instead of what you “should eat” or what your keto monitor says, your body won’t steer you.

7 Common Sense Ways to Have Uncommon Peace of Mind (or How To Stop Your "Stress Hormone" In Its Tracks)

1. Don't "find time" for sleep. Make time for sleep. You may have always said, "I'll sleep when I'm dead." What you should have known was, "If I don't sleep, I'll be dead." Sleep is incredibly important to reducing cortisol levels, disease risk, promoting healthy weight and a host of other essential functions your body performs.
a. You should be getting a minimum of 7 hours a night, and a maximum of 9 (studies have shown that sleeping past nine hours a night is actually harmful to your long term health, although scientists haven't pinpointed exactly why, yet.)
b. Note: if you have trouble falling asleep and/or are sleeping poorly, your cortisol levels are probably out of whack. This is very common with busy, stressed people. Instead of the cortisol spike in the morning as nature intends, their cortisol levels are low in the morning (cue the cranky, "I don't want to go to work" feeling), and high at night (making it hard to fall asleep). Sounds familiar?
2. Use an alarm like Sleep Cycle to wake up when during your lightest phase of sleep.
Sleep Cycle (get it on your smartphone) measures your body's movement during the night and detects when you enter different phases of sleep. It's easiest (and lowest-stress) to wake up to an alarm when you're in the lightest phase of sleep, so you set a "range" of time for the app (so you still wake up with enough time to get ready for the day). It will then detect your brain waves, figure out when you're in your lightest sleep phase, and wakes you up then.
3. Exercise consistently, but no more than 60-75 minutes on any day (including warm-ups).
When you have a workout routine that incorporates strength training and cardiovascular exercise, you build muscle, increase your brain's creation of new serotonin and dopamine receptors (thereby reducing your anxiety and risk of depression) and help to use up energy unleashed by your already-high cortisol levels. By releasing extra tension through a workout, you also feel better and make your body less apt to flood your bloodstream with stress hormones. You'll also sleep like a baby the night of a hard workout.
 4. Meditate (or pray). Taking time to really focus on staying calm and relaxed, and to think about all of the blessings and kindness in your life can have a wonderful impact on your overall well-being. It's also one of the most effective methods out there for relieving your high cortisol levels. If you don't have much experience with meditation, it's okay - there are many helpful and secular guided meditation videos on YouTube or around the Internet you can use to get started. The best times to meditate are in the morning, just before bed or any time during the day you're feeling particularly stressed out or anxious. Take some time, find your center, rediscover how good it feels to be grounded in the present moment, and feel your stress slip away from you.
a. A "companion" to meditation, or even replacement if you're not ready yet to meditate, is a journal where you record 3 "wins" for the day and 3-5 things to get done the next day. This is one of my "secrets" to massive productivity/GSD (getting STUFF done).
 5. Eat a protein-rich breakfast. When you wake up, you're generally in a catabolic state, because your body is fasting. This doesn't mean your body is breaking down all your muscle, but it does mean your body may not function at 100%. When you're eating breakfast, though, you're breaking the fast - hence the name of the meal - and doing so with a healthy, protein-rich breakfast gets your energy levels higher, faster.
a. If you're doing intermittent fasting ("IF" for short; we'll discuss this later), I would definitely have the morning cup of coffee (with some MCT oil or butter/cream) so you're not a walking corpse all morning.
i. Even most cultures or religions that fast have small, light meals throughout fasts. So don't think you have to be a Spartan and starve yourself just because it's called a "fast".
6. Grab a nap. If your schedule allows it, skip the afternoon coffee/energy drink/soda and take a power nap instead - 15-20 minutes is all you need to start feeling the benefits.
 7. Reduce your alcohol intake. You shouldn't be drinking much if you're trying to lose weight and get healthy anyway, but alcohol also causes major problems for your stress levels. Don't exceed a single beer/glass of wine/1 oz. serving of liquor per day. This is one of the major causes of slow, or no, weight loss even on a perfect plan. We just don't realize that what we "think" is 1 glass of wine is actually 3 glasses of wine. So, have a max of 1 oz. shot of liquor, a 5 oz. glass of wine, or 12 oz. can of beer, and make sure you count it in your daily calories. (Or just get super serious and cut it out all together!)
 8. Bonus point: Cut out electronics within 1-2 hours before sleep. Instead, train your mind to get into "sleep mode" by reading taking a bath, just relaxing, or reading some fiction (non-fiction gets you thinking and making plans before bed, which won't help you fall asleep). I'll admit, I'm not great at following this rule, but when I do it successfully even for a few nights, I sleep like a baby.

The Basic Keto Diet
      Let me start by saying I am not a doctor and nor do I have any kind of degree that makes me a professional. I started Keto on Wednesday September 13, 2017 and within 10 days I lost 14lbs. I read articles and watched videos about the Keto Diet for 2 months before I decided to try it myself. Remember you need to do what works for you. If you don’t agree or do not like something simply try something different. I started my diet with a 24 hour fast. THIS IS NOT NECESSARY. I decided that the best way to start start MY diet. Here was the thought about doing the fast. I wanted to deplete as much sugar deposits in my body as possible before I had my first meal. I wanted my first meal to be within the boundaries of the the Keto Diet. The last 3 to 4 hours was tough but mostly was not that hard since 8 hours of it were sleeping and 3 hours of it were after I ate.
FASTING
Lets talk about fasting. There are so many right and wrong answers. To ME I believe anything after 12 hours could technically be considered fasting. If I’m not fasting for at least 15 hours I do not call it fasting. Fasting is a good way to stay in Ketosis but is not necessary by any means. If I was to do a 15 hour fast I would eat dinner at 6pm or 7pm and not eat again until 9am or 10am. This is super easy to do. While fasting I allow myself coffee (black) nothing added and water. Doesn’t really matter the amount. I would say I wouldn’t drink more than 3 coffees during the fast but you could do more. Drink one water bottle or at least 8 ounces of water for each cup of coffee you drink. I personally would drink two water bottles between each cup of coffee. Here are some reasons I would fast:
If I ate a meal that had a lot of protein in one setting.
If I ate food I probably shouldn’t eat, like potatoes, rice, or bread.
If I feel like I am not losing weight and am at a stand still.
If I had any kind of alcohol.
If I ate a lot of food in one setting in general.
Again FASTING IS NOT NECESSARY but is not a terrible idea.
STARTING OUT THE DIET
The first thing you need to do is buy the foods that you will eat on the diet. Do not rely on the things you already have. Buy Ketone testing strips at Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, or Amazon. Buy either chicken broth or bullion cubes. It would not hurt to buy Potassium Citrate (Yes the Citrate part is important) and Magnesium in the vitamin section at Walmart or wherever you buy your groceries. These are usually cheap considering it will last more than a month.  Last but not least, a food scale. Walmart has food scales as well as most your major scales. If I did it again I would have bought a Microgram scale that also weighed grams. So if you are a cocain dealer you might already have one lolz. I bought a bought both because I decided after I bought the food scale I wanted raw “supplements” instead of buying something in a bottle. I’m a nerd sorry not sorry. I will link as many things as I can at the very end.
SOME OF THE FACTS
Keto is a high fat diet. Your protein is at a moderate level. Carbs and sugar are the devil, “cough” I mean you will eat low carb and avoid sugar. The typical daily diet is 70% Fat 20% Protein 10% Carbs. Mine usually ends up being 75% Fat or a little higher 18ish% Protein and 5ish% Carbs. Shoot for 70% Fat or a little more. Since you are avoiding certain foods your electrolytes will be a little off. Magnesium, Potassium, and Sodium are the three electrolytes in reference. If your electrolytes are off you are gonna feel like absolute crap. A way to quickly fix this is drink Chicken Broth or a Bouillon Cube dissolved in warm warm or……. take Magnesium and Potassium together (this is what I do). I salt the crap out of my food so I know my Sodium is good. Your body will change from using Sugar as a fuel source to using Ketones. This is called Ketosis. Your goal with this diet is to stay in Ketosis. There will be a time during this transition that will most likely not be pleasant. It is referred to the Keto Flu. I will share a link at the end if you want more in depth info.
KETO FLU
Google it! So many different opinions. Here is what I experienced. First of all remember I fasted so that was a little weird to begin with since I have never fasted in my life before. Made me almost feel high the last four hours. Like my mental clarity was super foggy and I was a little tired. So after I broke the fast and had my first “Keto Meal” (6oz Ribeye and a serving of steamed Broccoli). I went to sleep and woke up feeling a little strange. I drank Keto Coffee (I’ll explain later) in the morning and ate Eggs and Bacon a few hours later. The entire day I didn’t feel good and was very tired. Later in the day my body was achy. So technically “Flu like symptoms” without the puking or crapping my pants lol. I never had a sick feeling. Just know that this is something that will pass and everyone deals with it differently.
DO NOT EAT
This is most likely the best information I can give about your diet. Do not eat the items listed below.
Sugar or anything with sugar in it.
Bread (I know I cried a little too).
Grains. ( Rice, Pasta, Cereal)
Beans
Fruit
Juices, Soda, Gatorade.
Gum (This was hard for me).
WHAT TO EAT
Don’t worry this is not an expensive diet. I spent around $130 in groceries and it will most likely last three weeks. Keep in mind thats all meals per day times 7 days. If your breakfast, lunch, and dinner were $5 dollars a piece times 7 days that would come out to be $105 per week. You will not need to buy fancy food or cook different food for your family. If you cook something for dinner that is not allowed in your diet for your family (mashed potatoes or mac and cheese) just don’t eat any.
Meats:
Basically any steak will work. Ribeye is the fattiest out of all steaks. Check this pic out http://i.imgur.com/hXLH5qB.jpg.
Hamburger meat. Get 80/20 or a higher fat content.
Chicken legs, thighs, and wings. Try to stay away from Chicken Breast because its a lot leaner and high in protein.
Fish like Salmon are high in fat. Tilapia and Tuna tend to be more lean. Eat in moderation.
Bacon a Keto Staple.
Pork Ribs or Beef Ribs. Pork Chops and Pork Tenderloin are a lot leaner and high in protein.
Pork or Beef Sausage. Be mindful of the Label and what in it.
Breakfast Sausage or Links. Again be mindful of the type. Sugar is our enemy.
Eggs
Shrimp. In moderation.
Pepperoni. High in calories!
Deli Meats. This is a touchy subject but can be a good snack.
Beef Jerky. Another good snack but don’t over do it.
Turkey honestly should be avoided because its low in fat and high in protein.
Vegetables:
Avocados are another staple in Keto.
Spinach

LETS DO 14 DAYS WITHOUT CHEATING
Wether you start with a 24 hour fast or not lets make sure you’re ready for 14 days of trusting the diet. The first couple days or so are gonna suck. From my experience my appetite suppression started almost immediately. This means you won’t eat as much as you currently do. The first thing you need to do is download My Fitness Pal. You may add me [email protected]. Next figure out your Macros (Fat,Protein,Carbs per day). Remember to subtract Fiber from the Carb count :). Here is a basic break down.
For a Male 1800 or less Calories, 140-150g Fat, 85-95g Protein, and 10-20g Carbs.
For a Female: 1600 or less Calories, 120-130g Fat, 55-65g Protein, and 10-20g Carbs.
You can go to https://www.ruled.me/keto-calculator/ to get a little more accurate reading of your Macros. You can always keep your calories lower. Your daily percent is the most important thing to remember. Make sure your Fat is at least 70% of your daily diet and the rest should fall into place.
So now that you have your basic tools now its time to meal plan. Here is my basic day of eating. But before here is my Keto Coffee Recipe.
KETO COFFEE
Some people drink what is called Bullet Proof Coffee. You can Google it and find lots of different things. Here’s what I do. I make 8 ounces of any brand of coffee. I add 1 table spoon of Coconut oil, 1 table spoon of MCT oil, and 1 table spoon of Heavy Whipping Cream. However, I do change it up sometimes like use 1 table spoon of Kerrygold butter or use different amounts of oils or heavy whipping cream. The basic idea is to use 3 table spoons of some kind of fats. This morning I had 2 table spoons of Heavy Whipping Cream and 1 table spoon of Coconut oil.
DAY OF EATING
6:30am Keto Coffee
10-11am 2 Eggs fried in Bacon Grease. 2-3 slices of Bacon or Sausage. Every other day I eat 1/4-1/2 of an Avocado.
1-4pm Cheese of some sort. Small amount of nuts
5-7pm 4-6 ounces of meat. 1/2 to 1 cup of vegetables.
I only eat when I am hungry. One of the benefits of Keto is appetite suppression. During the week I work out at lunch so I tend to eat shortly before I go to the gym. After I get back I usually eat a cheese stick and some nuts. I kinda still believe in getting some protein in after a weight training session.
OFF THE CUFF INFORMATION
So there are a few YouTube creators that are very knowable about the Ketogenic Diet and how it affects our bodies. Recently I listen to a gentleman named Mike talk about supplements. He is doing quite a few studies on supplements and Keto. However, he was talking about Selenium. This is a very important mineral and we need a little bit of it in our bodies. The best sources of this mineral are: Brazil Nuts, Yellowfin Tuna, Sardines, Grass fed beef, Chicken, Eggs, and Spinach. Most of us need around 40-60mcg per day. Two eggs have roughly 30mcg. My advice is to eat 1 Brazil Nut a day.
Remember those  Ketone test strips? These are a lot like a pregnancy test. They test for Ketones in your urine. They are inaccurate in a since. The reason is they test the unused Ketones in our body. If you just did a very intense workout the reading of Ketones will be off because you used a whole bunch during your workout. The basic goal is to see any shade of Red or Purple. It will give you peace of mind knowing you are in Ketosis. There are other testing methods that are more accurate at testing for Ketosis. The two I have seen are Blood Test and Breath Test. The Breath Test simple test the Acetone in the bottom of your lunges. The Blood Test is arguably the most accurate for self testing, by that I mean not going to the doctor. It works like a Diabetic Test. You put your blood on little strips and it tells your your Blood Sugar. You can also buy strips to test your Ketone Level. This test is expensive and I do not recommend purchasing the device and strips. However, if you do use them sparingly. The “pee test” is inexpensive and easy to do. You pee on the test stick and wait 15 seconds, the bottle with have markings on it. Let me remind you though, as long as its any shade of red or purple you are good!
Last thing off the top of my head before I drop links, DRINK WATER!!!!!! You honestly need this more than anything. Be mindful to drink at least 6 ounces every hours. I drink 1 bottle 16ish ounces every hour I am awake.

CBD Vape for Pain & Flavor - Palliative Care & Feeding Tube, Need to Improve Quality of Life - Advice Please!
I am totally new to vaping. I've never smoked anything. I am on Palliative Care and I'm dealing with incredible pain and unable to take opioid meds due to reactions, so I'm trying to learn all I can about CBD, CBG, CBN and other cannabinoids for pain relief, especially for bladder spasms and sleep.
I also have a feeding tube and I can eat very few foods orally due to dysphagia and paralysis of my esophagus. I miss flavor sooo bad. I miss eating every hour of every day even though I've had my feeding tube for over a year and a half. Cravings never go away. It's saving my life, and I'm grateful everyday for my tube, even when my stoma (hole into my stomach) hurts.
So, enter vaping. I'm totally new to it and I have two use cases - 1) Get high quality CBD/CBG/CBN/etc into my system to relieve my bladder spasms and pain, and 2) ENJOY flavors again for quality of life. No nicotine please.
I've recently learned that lead and other heavy metals can be an issue. Sigh. Believe it or not, I'm doing this for the health benefits of CBD/CBG/CBN and trying to achieve pain relief, not lead poisoning. I know there are other ways to take these cannabinoids, but the tinctures (Charlotte's Web) give me reflux, and I also need a way to get FAST pain relief.
I found ceramic 510 cartridges through a YouTube search and I'm really interested in using those and getting into making my own concoctions with high quality vape oils (I know not to use tinctures) and possibly a hint of something like CBDfx for flavor because honestly, the "Go Green Hemp Grand Daddy Purp" tastes pretty disgusting to me and I want terepens for the health benefits, but the flavors are....icky. What's this Grand Daddy Purp thing about? Everyone has this nasty flavor!
Can you help me get myself set up appropriately?
I want to use the fully ceramic carts to avoid metals. I heard that they take extra oomph from the vape device, so now I don't know which device to buy.
I'm not sure what kind of vape device I really want, but I don't honestly like the pen - it's too long with a cart attached. I'd rather something chubbier but shorter to fit in a pocket. I like the idea of the magnetic release to quickly switch out carts in a vape device.
I'm not sure whether I prefer mouth to lung or direct to lung. Thoughts? Can't honestly say I'm particularly enjoying the "sucking" on the stick pen. I'd like to try direct to lung (seems more like my nebulizer with which I'm comfortable and familiar), but I guess direct to lung won't work with the fully ceramic 510 carts?
Really need to stick to very high quality, full-spectrum oils because this is for pain relief and I don't want to hurt my lungs. Entourage effect sounds good. I'm hoping to create my own mixtures with different ratios of CBD to CBG and some carts with CBD and CBG and CBN for nighttime use or when the pain won't release from the CBD and CBG alone. I realize this will take some experimentation. Perhaps .5 gram carts would be a good size so I can experiment but not use too much oil at once....does that work with HoneySticks BeeBox / BeeKeeper / Elf? I'm open to looking into other brands too. I think lower voltage for CBD is probably important, but does that also work for when I might just want an e-juice for flavor because I can't eat?
And PG/VG/MCT...are these really safe? Is it safer to go with terepens instead?
Oh my, this is overwhelming. Any help is appreciated.
Funny Story:
I went to a local smoke shop. You have to picture this - this exhausted and sick-looking bald girl in wheelchair rolls up to the counter at 9:30pm with her caregiver standing just inside the door (who is also not a smoker and quite disgusted by the smell of the shop) and asks the Indian dude desperately "Do you have some CBD that I can vape?" He says no, but then remembers something in the back, a 1ml Go Green Hemp Grand Daddy Purp cartridge and tells me this is all he has for CBD. Okay, so I tell him "I'll take it" and then I'm like, "Uh....don't I need the vape thingy?" and he asks, "A battery?" and I shrug, clueless - "it's called a battery?" I thought to myself. So he puts a stick thing on the counter and says this is what I need. "Can you please show me how to use it?" I asked. He hesitated. "Like, take it out of the boxes and show me how to use it? I'll buy it." He proceeds and screws it together and tells me to just push the button to vape. I'm grateful, pay him my $35 and, as I'm leaving, I see five people staring at me who weren't in the store when I first came in. I guess they got to watch the clueless and desperate "cancer girl" (I don't have cancer but that's what most folks assume) get her first vape. Lol. It was just as awkward as the time I went into the ABC store next to my church to buy 4 bottles of Everclear to make hand sanitizer spray for my church because all hand sanitizers had run out in my area.....yeah, I don't drink either. I can laugh at it because to me, it's just kinda ironic and I have to laugh at my nightmare sometimes.
The battery stick didn't have instructions! Dear God!! Do you know how long it took me to figure out I had to press that button 5 times just to turn it on?! Then vaping was a whole other thing - I thought it just worked when you puffed on it. Nope. Anyways, some strung-out-looking YouTubers ironically straightened me out (though it honestly took watching quite a few vids before I found you guys and one other dude who actually doesn't talk way too fast or too slow and explains things to noobs - thanks for being amazing with your explanations!) and now I know how to use it.
I hope you got a chuckle out of my story about my trip to the Tobacco and Vapor store a few days ago....how awkward! I hope the other customers got some entertainment out of it too!
