Cont. from @mettleborn || Ben & Sam (x)
There was a flicker of something in Ben's eyes as he stood there, gun still in his hands while he stared. He couldn't quite recall the last time he saw someone alive, someone human... It could have been weeks, months. He had begun to think that he might be the only one out there, but now, maybe he could be proven wrong. That said, there was still the fact that he did not know who the stranger was, or what he was doing. There was every chance that a survival instinct could kick in and the other man could fight, but Ben was armed at least. The response was somewhat surprising, the easiness in the man's voice indicating that this was hardly the first time he found himself staring down the barrel of a gun, but the fact that he was still there meant that he could get himself out of these situations; through words or fists.
"Likewise." Ben replied, a small nod of his head before he slowly lowered the aim of his weapon. He would not disarm himself entirely, but there was no use exacerbating the situation if it was not called for. "What are you doing out here? I heard this town was abandoned entirely..." He paused for a moment, noticing the dog that was with the other. "Do you have supplies?" he asked, willing to at least offer something to another who might need something.

Idk what this is but another lil starter for @ghostsxagain || Ben and Elijah
Shit. From his vantage point, he spotted the movement - it was around a hundred yards from Elijah, but it wouldn't take long for his partner to be gained upon. So he frantically called out to the other man.
"Go! I'll clear the path for you!"

Ben remained silent, watching his partner talking so softly to Isabella. There were many reasons why he loved Nick, but this, the way he cared so much and would not willingly cause harm, that was the biggest reason. Nick was such a good man who had been dealt a terrible hand by the universe, but instead of letting it consume him, he had used it and made something better of a bad situation. Something that Ben had taken a lot longer to do, and he had learned how to do that from Nick. After a moment, he placed a hand on top of where the other two held theirs, lightly patting.
"You two stay here. I'll go and deal with the other room, ok?" He couldn't help Isabella come to terms with what had been done to her, but he could help to remove the visual of how it had happened, so he stepped out of the room and closed the kitchen door behind him, getting to work on tidying up the blood and removing Patrick's body.
Back in the kitchen, Isabella cautiously leaned to rest her head on Nick's shoulder, tears rolling down her cheek as she listened to him explaining what he knew. Once she calmed down, whenever that would be, she would be able to realise that he was living proof that being something that was not human was not a sentence to being a monster. He was one of the kindest people she had met and he was hiding such a secret.
"Thank you, Nico." she whispered. "I just... Rafa... The thought of him seeing me like this when he wakes up... I already can't deal with the pain of knowing that my past is what put him in this position, but now... To know that his wife is..." She couldn't bring herself to say the word. "How could he look at me the same?"
All this time. Nick nodded. All this time and no one suspected a thing. Your neighbour could be breathing fire and the cashier at the supermarket hide a dozen snakes underneath her beanie, your favourite streamer might have a fish tail and your brother-in-law howls at the moon. It may not have been normal - whatever normal was to begin with- but despite feeling alone in the world, they were not. Monsters like them were not alone, and Nick squeezed Isabella's hand gently to let her know that she wasn't alone either.
"Yeah... we are." There was no way of denying that. Nick cast an apologetic look at Ben who had experienced first hand how dangerous Nick could truly become. "Well, for a start, you can't hurt me." Not much anyway. He was physically stronger than even her sire, not that it did much against his malicious schemes. But if Isabella was worried about accidentally hurting him, she could relax now. Of course, he knew, she wouldn't. Not for a long time.
"You can't trust yourself, because you don't know who you are anymore. And that's okay. You'll figure it out. We can, together, if you let me. I know it's terrifying and every fibre of your being rebels against learning what you've become. But the better you understand it, the easier it becomes. I promise. Rafael will understand. I was scared for twenty years he'd abandon me if I told him and the worst he did was to ask me if I have fleas." A sad huff that died halfway becoming a chuckle. "You're not alone."

Cont. from @brokenbcys || Ben and Anthony (x)
Ben normally had a steady hand, but this time, something was different. Seeing someone else for the first time in so long put him off, and he wasn't sure about what he should do. But he knew one thing was for certain - he would not be responsible for innocent blood being spilled. So, slowly, he lowered his weapon at the man's request and nodded his head.
"Unfortunately, there's nothing here. Looks like it was picked apart months ago." he explained, watching the man closely. "Are you alone?"

Cont. from @radicalrascals || Nick and Ben (x)
Remaining cautious, but not wanting to escalate things too quickly, Ben slowly lowered his weapon as he watched the man hold up his hands. He knew too well that someone could feign surrender, trick someone into thinking that they were not a threat, but he also wasn't about to start shooting over nothing. If anything, it was a waste of ammunition that he could not afford.
"You're staying in that place?" he asked, motioning to the nearby cabin that he had intended to check, keeping his gaze on the stranger. "Not exactly what you'd call a cosy weekend getaway..."

C O N T from @sxmebrxs || David (X)
It felt so surreal to bump into David after so long, having not seen the other man since he was eighteen and still fighting the supernatural with his parents. So much had happened since then, yet the way he cared about this man never changed. He pulled back from the embrace, laughing softly at the touch to his slight beard and shrugged his shoulders.
“Nah, don’t sweat it, man. I could be cocky and say I had everything under control, but that’d be a flat out lie. You’re looking great.” His smile softened slightly and he glanced over to the body behind him. “Fancy grabbing a beer?”

He was no stranger to being alone. Even long before the end of the damn world, he had traveled solo. Partly out of the need to focus on only one thing, but also to avoid giving himself someone else to worry about. He had wandered the roads across the country in search of survivors, taking out as many of the undead as he could in the process. It wasn't an easy life, but at least he had life. Part of him was grateful that his son had not lived long enough to see this world, to see society falling apart or to face the threat of death by one of these creatures.
He made his way through the trees, weapon in hand as he tread carefully, not wanting to make too much noise while in search of somewhere to shelter for the night. He never slept soundly these days, always alert to any potential dangers that lurked around every corner, but when he heard the distinct sound of breathing, he realised that he was not alone.
Pushing on forwards, he felt a twig crack underneath his boot and silently cursed, spotting a figure moving up ahead in the shadows. The movements did not seem to indicate that they were undead, but at the same time, the frightened living could be equally as dangerous. Stepping out into the open, he held one hand up to show that he meant not harm, spotting the young woman with a blade in hand.
"Are you ok?" he asked, glancing around slightly to ensure that it wasn't some kind of ambush. "I won't hurt you."
muse: dakota ‘kota’ velazquez, 21, pansexual open to: m / f / nb - 21+ plot: it has been three years since the first undead began walking the streets. now, survivors are traveling in search of safety and security, constantly on the move in search of a secure home. dakota herself has been on her own for months now, after her previous community was overrun by the undead. indie starter page: @indiestarter noting: will post responses as new posts for tracking purposes
The sun had long since surrendered to the darkness, leaving the forest shrouded in shadow. Dakota’s dark chocolate eyes darted through the tangled branches and skeletal trees, her senses sharp as she pivoted on her heel. The crunch of dry leaves underfoot echoed in the silence, too loud, too obvious. Then, a sharp crack of a stick splintering in the distance froze her in place. She sucked in a breath, holding it tight in her chest as if that alone might make her invisible. Her fingers tightened around the worn handle of her knife, the blade slick with the dried blood of the undead she had fought off along the way. The coppery tang still clung to her skin, a grim reminder of how close death always lingered. Friend or foe? The question spun through her mind as she strained to listen for more movement. But in this world, neither could be trusted. The breathing could be just as dangerous—perhaps even worse—than the rotting creatures she’d spent the last three years avoiding. Every muscle in her body tensed, her instincts screaming at her to move, to fight, to run. But where? This forest, like every other place she’d crossed in months of solitude, offered no promise of safety. It was all temporary—a fleeting reprieve at best. Her grip tightened further, the worn leather of the knife’s handle grounding her as her gaze swept the shadows once more. The darkness felt alive, heavy, as though it held secrets waiting to strike. Another sound, closer this time. A deliberate movement. Her pulse quickened, pounding in her ears as she shifted her weight, preparing for whatever might emerge. Friend or foe—did it even matter anymore? In this world, survival was its own kind of hell, and trust had long since become a luxury she couldn’t afford.

Cont. from @radicalrascals || Ben, Nick and Rafael (x)
Ben's heart was almost in his throat as he offered the older brother a friendly smile in greeting. He glanced towards Nick with a hint of colour in his cheeks caused by the compliment, nodding his head slightly as he observed the interaction between the two siblings. He got the impression that Rafael hadn't necessarily been aware of their meeting today, and it made the hunter a little uneasy, but when a hand was extended to him, it took the edge off just a little.
"The pleasure's all mine." Ben replied, shaking the others hand as he noticed the rather firm grip. He managed a weak chuckle when Rafael mentioned the way Nick had spoken about him. "Um, well as long as it's all good things, I guess." He glanced to Nick who looked rather uncomfortable and he smiled softly. Sitting down, he got comfortable and waited for the other two men to join him, sliding menus over to them both.
"Oh... Well, I'm not all that exciting really. I'm in pest control." he replied, hating how lame that sounded, but it was a lie without being a complete lie. He did take out pests, just not necessarily the kind one might assume. "I have my own small business and I travel around a lot... As for where I'm from, originally Chile by way of Texas."

TIFF 2019: Day 1
Films: 4 Best Film of the Day: The Lighthouse
Parasite: Outside of The Godfather, you wouldn’t expect the sound effect of a door to signify the emotional weight of an entire film, but early on in Joon-ho Bong’s Palme d’Or-winning comic tragedy, that’s what he achieves. The door in question is the outer entrance to the stunning house where the ultra-wealthy Parks live: As it opens, you hear the echoing, metallic clank and whoosh of well-heeled machinery. Standing outside of it is Dong-ik (Sun-kyun Lee), the youngest member of the vastly less successful Kim family. He lives with his parents and sister in a dark, bug-infested basement flat. What comes out of this visit, a job interview, eventually leads Dong-ik‘s family to insinuate themselves into the Park’s home, systematically replacing existing staff, until they have fully taken over. To this point, the film is mostly a comedy, but Bong isn’t satisfied with a simple farce. True to his nature, he keeps probing the situation, teasing it out with several other revelations and twists, until it becomes something almost altogether different. By the end, as it swerves inexorably into blood-soaked violence, the film reveals to be a bit of a con itself, drawing us in with its enticing humor, then opening up into a much darker vision, before ending on an emotional note of surprising vulnerability. Through it all, Bong shows a mastery of odd tones, from the opening comedic salvo, to the final emotional beats.
The Lighthouse: Horror is always deeply seated in myth, from our earliest beginnings, those things that terrified us became made manifest and canonized, as a way to explain them -- or at least acknowledge their existence. No modern filmmaker seems to understand this better than Robert Eggers, whose debut feature, The Witch, utilized actual language from existing folk myths and incorporated it into truly terrifying work. His new film utilizes a similar device, but while The Witch remained rooted in the realism of the New England countryside, this film is much more interested in the wild, chaotic lands inside our skulls. Willem DaFoe is the aging, half-mad Scottish wickie, manning the light, and Robert Pattinson is the younger apprentice, dealing with the drudgery of the day’s work for what is meant to be a four-week stint. We have two men alone on a desolate and isolated rocky island that may or may not be haunted with the spirits of long-dead sailors. Working as a kind of companion piece to his first film, Eggers creates a similar atmosphere of dread, while utilizing several thematically linked tropes – substitute the desolate woods for the desolate ocean; and raving seagulls in place of a jet-black billy goat. It’s like a half-mad sea shanty come to horrible life and twisting on itself in swirl of frothing currents. Because Eggers is constantly re-establishing what we are to consider real, and what is left in the buggered minds of these two drunken sots, we are on much softer ground than in his previous effort, the distinction between a pine forest ground, and the sand, I suppose, which makes the film less immediately unnerving, but no less impressive.
Zombi Child: It begins promisingly enough, with oddly interwoven threads from seemingly different films: a Haitian man is murdered with a Voodoo concoction only to return in undead form, escaping forced labor in the cane fields to return home; a group of French teen girls in a highly decorated private school outside Paris indoctrinate a new girl to their literary society; and one of the girls pines for the boy she is madly in love with, awaiting his return. Gradually, French director Bertrand Bonello starts connecting these threads, but the more they reveal themselves, the less luring the film becomes. From its intriguingly ambiguous start, it slides into disappointingly recognizable territory. Eventually, it settles into a commentary on cultural appropriation, by one of the characters, but also, as an indictment of the audience (and possibly Bonello himself), meddling in things we don’t begin to understand in the name of narrative thrill. It has many good moments, and some eerie sequences, but oddly loses power in its coherency.
The Personal History of David Copperfield: Armando Iannucci is well-known as a satirist of the highest order – “Veep,” the HBO TV series that just concluded its run, was a ribald and unsparing depiction of politicians as ego-maniacal lunatics – but his adaptation of the beloved Charles Dickens’ novel hews much more closely to the writer’s own sentimentalist fancy than what we might have expected from Iannucci’s normal comic eviscerations. Still, there’s plenty to enjoy here, from Dev Patel’s winning performance in the title role (dude could charm fuzz off a peach); to the bevy of other great character turns from a resonant cast including Hugh Laurie, Ben Whishaw, Gwendoline Christie, Benedict Wong, and Tilda Swinton, among others. It turns out Dickens’ penchant for capital C characters plays well in Iannucci’s hands, and everyone seems to be having a hell of a time taking turns chewing up the scenery. It’s certainly a lot less lachrymose than what we’re used to from him, but it’s understandable why he might have needed a breath of less befouled air.
Tomorrow: Due to the vagaries of the schedule, it will likely be a simple, three-movie day: Beginning with Trey Edward Schultz’ Waves; moving on to The Sleepwalkers, an intriguing sounding film from Paula Hernandez; and closing the relatively easy day with Pedro Costa’s Vitalina Varela.

Pre-Gamin’: Dodgers at Cubs (9:05 CT) – Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread
The Cubs are playing another late-one tonight – 9:05 CT start time – as they plan to host the Los Angeles Dodgers at Sloan Park.
Cole Hamels is starting for the Cubs tonight, and, notably, he’ll be batting eighth. It’s possible that his position in the lineup means nothing – this could make pinch hitting for him sooner a bit easier – but the other Cubs pitchers have mostly batted ninth this Spring, when they’ve batted for themselves at all. On top of that, Maddon does have a history of batting pitchers eighth, so I guess let’s just see what happens during the last week or so. Maybe Joe hasn’t decided which way he wants to go just yet.
As for the Cubs lineup, it’s looking like a very real, regular season group. Among the more mobile choices, you’ll find Ben Zobrist at second, Kyle Schwarber in left, and Ian Happ in center. The Dodgers are countering with most of their regulars, as well.
I can’t say I’ll stay up for all of this one, but I will say “Go Cubs.”

Closed starter for @aufhcker
It was slowly becoming a long and tiring hunt for Ben. He wasn’t as spritely as he had once been, wasn’t the young man who could easily run around and take a hit like he had been twenty plus years ago. He was past forty now and a string of bad hunts had left him with a back that seemed to want to counteract his every move. Still, he did what he could, and he pushed through any discomfort that middle-age brought him so that he could help keep people safe. Just as his parents had raised him to do.
He had been in Ohio hunting down a pack of werewolves, a group who had been terrorising the townsfolk and had a trail of bodies in their wake. Of course, the local authorities thought it was a wild animal, a theory that Ben was happy to run with as he visited the station under the guise of a federal agent, gathering all the information that he could. But that was only part of his job, the easy part as well. It was the hunting that was the more difficult task. Finding out where the creatures were hiding, tracking their movements, trying to figure out the best way to take them down given that there were four of them and one of him.
The third night he spent in town, he noticed that this time around, there were only two sets of prints along the dirt track through the forest, and given that it was half the amount he had previously been following, Ben was more than a little confused. They had been traveling together until this point. Why stop now? He hadn’t heard of any other hunters being in town, so why the sudden change in movement tactics? It was cool and a light breeze whipped around him as he moved through the bushes, slowly following the tracks that had been left in the dirt with his weapon in his hand. It was always tense to be following multiple targets, knowing that he was outnumbered and much weaker than the werewolves, but he had little choice. He could only do his best.
Coming upon one of the werewolves, Ben came to a halt behind a nearby tree, watching the creature sniffing the air. It likely knew that he was there, but he opted to not focus on that, instead readying his rifle.
Slow, deep breaths passed his lips as he aimed the weapon at the creature, silver bullets loaded and ready to go. And so, he pulled the trigger, watching the werewolf crumble to the ground with a screech, falling completely still seconds later. That was one down, however the second was not far away, and Ben had no time to register the sound of hurrying footsteps rushing towards him until it was too late. The second creature rammed into him, sending him hurtling across the forest floor, gun skidding into some nearby bushes. Clearly, it was furious that its ‘friend’ had been killed as it looked at him with anger in its eyes, circling as Ben tried to scramble to his feet. His silver blade was in his jacket pocket, however as his hand slipped into the fabric, he was rushed again, and his attempt to dodge the blow was unsuccessful as he was flung into a nearby tree, face slamming into the trunk and leaving him dazed while the werewolf stalked closer.
