Ellie's Closet: Diavolo edition
Tumblr media
⊹ content: these are Ellie's redesigns of the dateables' closets after they burn all their current clothes. First from the non-brother line is the jubilant, adored current king of the Devildom with a great chest, Diavolo! ⊹ warnings: none. ⊹ a/n: Ellie is my first Obey Me OC. You can visit their Devilgram HERE! The comments are written from Ellie's perspective. Though I love all the characters, Ell has a variety of feelings. I did these outfit re-dos a long time ago so some images may be familiar. Post set up inspired partially by the Princess Diaries makeover scene.
Tumblr media
Only Ellie can take THIS and THIS:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And give you....⊹˚₊
Tumblr media
Diavolo: Tops
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
⊹ Diavolo's original outfits are not too bad, but similar to Lucifer's, they are VERY boring. Diavolo is bright and joyful, and despite his royal blood, he deserves to add some of his cheerful personality to his looks. ⊹ Ellie is focusing on keeping the "royal" aesthetic present with bold reds, golds, and black, but adding the fun with textures and additions to the tops. ⊹ Tops remain very structured with broad shoulders and full-length sleeves, allowing for looser fits in the bottoms. ⊹ Material focus: crepe, velvet, silk/satin, gold
Diavolo: Bottoms
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
⊹ Tops that extend into the bottoms (capes, long blazers, etc.) is a staple in Dia's new closet. ⊹ The bottoms will be mostly plain and solid colour, but some will incorporate similar detailing found on the tops. ⊹ There is more variety in fit and a bit less structure on the bottoms. Diavolo also spends the majority of his time sitting in meetings or out in the Devildom, so comfort is prioritized. ⊹ Material focus: leather, crepe, velvet
Diavolo: Accessories
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
⊹ A LOT of chains, gems/jewels, beading, and bold gold appliques will be used to add more colour and style to Dia's looks. ⊹ Belts with lots of dangles will be a staple accessory to add interest and draw the eye around his outfits. ⊹ Ellie also added a few corsets to layer over blazers and button-ups that are plain. They add additional structure and colour, making the overall fit more interesting. ⊹ Material focus: gold, leather, gems/jewels/beads

Sitting Front Row at...(On a Budget Obvs): Lookbook no.15
Hey to anyone reading!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And welcome to my fave lookbook I’ve done in a longggg ass time! Yes, that’s partially because it involved making collages and doing the low effort work of scouring Vogue Runway for “research purposes”, but I promise, that statement wasn’t made out of COMPLETE laziness-I am super happy with it too. It’s been a good use of pre-part-lockdown-lift time in the interim between that brief period of Christmas celebrations and eateries finally fucking opening again because let’s be honest, I always knew I was gonna get distracted by oat milk vanilla lattes and veggie all day breakfasts once I could actually sit down with them at my fave local cafe. You could say I was very much operating on a self-imposed deadline.
The “what I would wear to sit front row at...[insert designer here]” TikTok/Instagram reel trend was something I wanted to get on board with ever since I first saw one and whilst the option of doing my own live action take-I really cannot bear the thought of having to edit footage of myself awkwardly attempting to sit nonchalantly in front of a camera for hours on end-was off the cards considering my complete lack of screen presence, I decided a Tumblr text post would work just as well, and if not even better in a way. Given the absence of the time limitations you face when you’re making a reel or a TikTok I thought it’d be cool to present the looks as part of a mini moodboard for each designer which adds a bit of context to each look even if you aren’t familiar with their past collections and establishes the general vibe of the brand I’m attempting to replicate. Not to sound snotty or as if I am the font of all knowledge on anything high fashion related but even with my amateur knowledge I noticed that as the video trend took off and was adopted by big name influencers, it became less about the average person putting their own personal spin on the aesthetic of the labels we can’t ordinarily afford and more about them building outfits that only vaguely resemble the general public perception of the brand around the real corresponding (and often gifted and thus inaccessible to someone who doesn’t makes thousands for a sponsored post) pieces they own SO I thought I’d take the trend back to its roots and get a bit resourceful. All that being said, in no particular order, here are the outfits I would wear to sit front row at Gucci, Vera Wang, Miu-Miu, Marc Jacobs, Dolce & Gabbana, Brock Collection, Alexander McQueen, Etro, Burberry aaaand Saint Laurent based on their past collections and guess what? They didn’t cost a shit tonne of money :-)
-disclaimer: will include an asterisk before any new purchases if from a high street store though to be honest, I don’t think there are any, we shall see! I do include where I got old purchases from in case anyone wants to search anything on Depop/Ebay-
1. Saint Laurent (formerly Yves Saint Laurent)
Tumblr media
-blazer from identityparty on Depop, pleather trousers from Zara, jewellery from Dolls Kill-
I know technically abbreviating Saint Laurent to YSL doesn’t really make much sense anymore given the brand’s name change in 2012, but I’ll always think of it as that in the same way I’ll always associate it with the slightly dishevelled yet simultaneously glitzy rock n’ roll aesthetic. The thing is, whilst YSL hasn’t done anything wildly out of the box for a long time, it’s rare they put a look on the runway that I wouldn’t wear; they never end up being a fashion week standout but the Parisienne take on grunge we’ve seen Anthony Vaccarello establish as his go-to will always have a place in my heart.
2. Alexander McQueen
Tumblr media
-embroidered leather jacket from Ebay (originally Topshop), harness from Amazon, dress from ASOS, boots from Koi Vegan Footwear-
Alexander McQueen is a brand that is pretty much universally liked, from the historically extravagant and groundbreaking shows the man himself put together to Sarah Burton’s more toned down but still beautiful collections. Obviously I didn’t attempt to do justice to the former, so I tried my hand at putting together a look inspired by Sarah’s blend of delicate femininity and nomadic edge, and it went...okay? Like it’s definitely not my favourite of all the looks because it does give off slightly cheap copycat vibes buuut outside of the context of this lookbook it’s cute.
3. Brock Collection
Tumblr media
-boater hat from Ebay, midi skirt from morganogle on Depop, corset top from ownmode_, heels from amybeckett1, bag from Primark-
Brock isn’t as well known a brand as most of the others in this list but I adore everything Laura Vassar Brock does and I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to try and channel the vision of one of the OG pioneers of the cottagecore vibe through my own wardrobe. I mean fr, this woman’s work as a steady provider of meadow photoshoot worthy dresses and corsets and skirts is v slept on and I will not stand for it. I will sit in front of a camera and then write a paragraph in my blog post begging anybody who reads to give LVB (an abbreviation I acknowledge is unlikely to catch on because Lisa Vanderpump anybody?) some form of acknowledgement for her services to period romance novel inspired moodboards everywhere.
4. Marc Jacobs
Tumblr media
-coat from House of Sunny, white shirt from Retro World Camden, co-ord from Sugar Thrillz, bag from Poppy Lissiman-
If there’s one thing Marc Jacobs always does, it’s COMMITS. TO. HIS. THEME. I just KNOW he has a secret Pinterest with separate boards for every fashion era of the 20th century and he is putting those boards to good use providing us with collections that are as immersive as they are eclectic year in year out.
5. Miu Miu
Tumblr media
-beret from H&M, hair clips from H&M, jewellery from Primark, coat from mollyyemmaa on Depop, shirt from YesStyle, sweater vest from YesStyle, skirt from Depop, diamanté belt from Brandy Melville, shoes from Koi Vegan Footwear-
We all like to talk about Bratz dolls and Monster High dolls and Barbies as fashion inspo but can we all focus on Cabbage Patch dolls for two secs so as to acknowledge the fact that a Miu Miu collection is basically all their fits grown up? And made boujie as fuck? If I want my fix of Wes Anderson meets Scream Queens (what a combo) inspired outfits, if I want prissy and girlish but also glam, if I want to look like a bratty rich girl whose one redeeming quality is her eye for vintage clothes, I know where to look and that is the Miu Miu section of Vogue Runway.
6. Vera Wang
Tumblr media
-blazer as in no.1, velvet bralet from catdegaris on Depop, harness from Amazon, skirt from Ebay, knee high socks from Ebay, lace up boots from Ebay-
Vera Wang’s RTW aesthetic, a blend of the ethereal, ultra-feminine bridal designs she’s known for and British style punk rock influences, is something I feel has only become firmly established in recent years but it is everything I ever wanted and more. I always find myself trying to balance the part of me that loves everything girly and delicate and pretty and the part of me that would love to be in a biker gang and Vera’s collections are always an inspirational reminder of just how well it can be done.
7. Burberry
Tumblr media
-coat from charity shop, suit from emmafisher3 on Depop, top from simranindia, shirt underneath from Zara, jewellery from ASOS-
Now I’m not gonna lie, I’m not the biggest fan of Burberry but there have been a few looks over the past few years I’ve really liked and as someone who owns numerous trench coats, high necks and way too much plaid, I thought it’d be an easy one to replicate. Plus, if you can count on Riccardo Tisci for nothing else you at least can rely on him giving you some layering inspo which is very much needed in a country where it literally just snowed in April and where my plans for today have just been cancelled because the iPhone weather app did a Karen Smith and didn’t predict rain for today right up until it started raining so thanks for that one British meteorologists. Your incompetence strikes again.
8. Etro
Tumblr media
-corset from Urban Outfitters, vinyl trench coat from Topshop, boots from Ebay, black slip dress from kaoanaoleinik on Depop, fur trim afghan coat from louisemarcella-
Like with Brock Collection, Etro isn’t a hugely well known brand, but it is always one of my favourites-to add a spanner into the works of any attempts to cultivate a firm sense of personal style, I live for the ornate Bohemian look that Etro does so well just as much as I love both grungy and girly pieces, and so I really wanted to include a brand whose collections go down that route. It was a toss-up between this and Zimmerman, the flirtier, free spirit counterpart to the dark romance of Veronica Etro’s designs; her vision really shines through the most when it comes to the brand’s winter collections, imo, and given that I live in a country where winter or some weather state resembling it does seem to take up 70% of the year, I did decide on channelling her work rather than that of the equally talented Nicky and Simone Zimmermann this time round.
9. Dolce & Gabbana
Tumblr media
-flower crown from ASOS, tiara from Amazon, earrings from YesStyle, dress from alicealderdice1 on Depop, opera gloves from Ebay, boots from Koi Vegan Footwear-
D&G is a brand I felt really conflicted about doing-I don’t include their current collections in my fashion week reviews based on the actions of designers Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce over the last few years because I don’t want to mitigate the collective effort of fashion critics to push them towards irrelevancy. Though people like to claim the brand has turned a corner since Lucio Di Rosa was brought on board as the manager of celebrity and VIP relations last year (they are as prolific a force on red carpet fashion as ever), we haven’t seen any real meaningful apologies or reparations made by Dolce and Gabbana themselves which once again leaves us in the all too familiar quandary of whether or not we can separate the art from the artist especially when it is far too much of a simplification to only credit the two men for their work given there’s a whole design team behind them. There are a LOT of shitty people working in fashion, the whole industry is a bit of a cesspit if we’re honest, but I don’t think that should stop us from at least being able to appreciate old collections if we make sure we aren’t engaging in any kind of promotion of current works whilst doing so. D&G are a brand of high highs and low lows, with looks that range from hideously ugly to showstoppingly beautiful in a single show-when the looks are good, they are GOOD-and their presence in the fashion world is most definitely felt whether we want it to be or not. It would just be shit to refuse to recognise the existence of some real iconic runway moments, the practical work that went into the ornate detail and opulence that helped cement D&Gs place in sartorial history, the styling that’s made goddesses and fairytale queens out of modern day women as they’ve glided down catwalks, the far more extravagant and, let’s be real, sexier version of our world D&G shows have transported us to in the past. Will I talk about D&G ever again? No, and if you Google the scandals their brand has faced over the past few years, there are more than enough reasons why, but just this once I did want to pay homage to some of the collections, the snippets of which I saw on my Tumblr dashboard back when I was about 13, that first got me into fashion.
10. Gucci
Tumblr media
-fur coat from Topshop, clips from Zaful, glasses from Ebay, dress from gracewright246 on Depop, shirt from Boohoo, blazer from charity shop-
Now last but, if you ever read any of my fashion week reviews (the likelihood of someone actually having read one of them and reading this is incredibly, incredibly slim lol, I wouldn’t read me either) you’ll know, definitely not least, is Gucci because Alessandro Michele comes through every!! single!! time!!
The man is truly the king of quirky throwback maximalism and it hurts my heart that a lot of people seem to think of it only as a brand associated with ostentatious displays of wealth. Year after year since Michele was made creative director he has released purposeful, fully-fleshed out collections which unravel themselves to us on the runway like time capsules containing the belongings of the rich and whimsical and yes that can sometimes result in outfits which are *ahem* a bit mismatched but it doesn’t matter because through fashion he manages to take us to a vivid version of the past where people could dress as freely and lavishly as they wanted to, into the wardrobe of a person unaffected by the side-eyeing of others. You get the impression he doesn’t design so much as plays around with some kind of enchanted dress up box and takes inspiration from there and to give that impression is only a credit to his talent-to make outfits so kooky and extravagant look like they were meant to be takes a boldness and genuine love for clothes that I do tend to feel a lot of the big name designers have lost in the pursuit of profit and the necessary placating of the dying customer base that keeps that coming in. Of course I'm not for a second saying Gucci does not care about profit, but at the very least, they have on board a creative director who genuinely has fun with what they’re putting out there and wants to make a statement too and that really shows; you can rest on your laurels and sell tweed boucle jackets to rich old white women for eternity but nobody’s going to mention your brand name and the word groundbreaking in the same sentence ever again unless they’re talking about what it was a century ago, you know (mentioning no names...unless...did I hear someone say Chanel)? That feels like such a shady way to end, lol, but I’m sure said brand will survive-to be fair, they’ve been included in every other What I’d Wear to Sit Front Row At video I’ve seen so although I’m always slagging them off for doing the saaaaame thinggggg year after year, for that same reason their aesthetic is instantly recognisable and so will always be a source of imitation. There are obviously pros and cons to being a brand which constantly reinvents itself but I think it’s totally possible to do that whilst maintaining an overall mission, and Alessandro Michele’s work at Gucci demonstrates that with ease.
Anyway, if you got to here, thanks for reading! I know I’m super behind on this whole TikTok trend and I know a Tumblr post instead of a video is a bit of a cop out but all the real, physically awkward ones out there know that watching yourself back is excruciating lmao, so I hope this does the trick. After this, I’m gonna get back to the reviewing S/S21 collections post though knowing me I’ll probs take a few days to get back into that because I feel like since I left full-time education (RIP me going back in a few months) writing continuously like this for any longer than about 15 mins fries what brain cells I have left. Again, thank you for reading and if you are, sending many good vibes your way! Stay safe!

SEWING SPIDERS Spiderverse headcanon: All of the spidefam are, on varying levels, (somewhat) competent at sewing and other needle arts for multiple reasons.
Peter B, Gwen and Noir are the best in terms of actual skill.
Peter B and Noir learned from their respective Aunt May's as a way to stretch out the wear and tear of their clothes, since they didn't always have money for new ones. Between that and the time they spent sewing their costumes back together, they became pretty good at it.
Noir uses it as a reflective, relaxing activity when he can't sleep or the nightmares keep him awake. Because of this, he has the most patience when it comes to hand sewing even if it's larger projects or when dealing with an endless amount of small stitches. He is also surprisingly good at embroidery, and has made many patches for the Fam to stick to their jackets and bags. They all come out gorgeously detailed and monochromatic, but once the Fam gives him other colors and he has them all labelled and sorted (they know better than to mess with the labels) Noir occasionally asks them for help on color theory and what colors look good together.
Peter B is decently competent at sewing and fixing hem lines, waist lines, and holes. His aunt May was also a master knitter, so he has borderline medium level skill there, and can make a mean scarf or blanket if he really gets going. He has tried to use a loom before, but finds it too bulky and his rows often have large gaps because the struggles with yarn tension.
Gwen is by far, the best out of them. Not just because she can fix things, but because she can make them. Gwen has dipped her interests into many aesthetics ranging from punk, rock, vintage, pastel, or the softer looks based off of ballet and lyrical dance. She has made, and worn, a corset a time or two. She also isn't afraid to rip her clothes up and patchwork them together to see what she gets if she likes it enough, and has a good eye for diy stuff. She can make pretty rockin' circle skirts and blouses, and is the only other one besides Noir and Ham who knows how to take measurements and what they mean. She also legitimately sketches out her ideas and has a mannequin bust for her projects, and can use a sewing machine even on thinner slippier fabrics. She has a lot of talent for sewing and clothes making, on the flip side she has very LITTLE talent for things like knitting and embroidery and has rage quit them more than once.
Ham is exactly in the middle of them all in terms of skill. He can do the basics pretty well, knows how to keep his stitches lined up and even, can take measurements, and is better at short bits of hand stitching. His own skill is more for fixing holes and hemlines more than anything else, although he occasionally struggles with the learning curve of human bodies when it comes to the Fams' clothes because he is, in fact, a pig. And humans and pigs don't share a lot in terms of physical features. The Fam sometimes wonders WHY Ham needs to know how to sew, but since they're not sure about Zany Cartoon Logic when it comes to clothing they decide not to ask.
Miles is not necessarily GOOD at sewing, but he IS learning and getting better with practice. Apparently sewing your own costume is par for the course when you have a secret spider identity. He learned sewing from his mother, but the Aunt May of his dimension is also willing to help and a very tired miles is grateful. He still wants to do it on his own thought cause he feels guilty, which leads to several poked fingertips and sore hands and somehow getting wrapped up in the measuring tape while his mother laughs and scolds him for his lack of patience. His stitches are a little large and not spaced very well but he's getting there.
And while Miles can't sew very well, him and Gwen get along fabulously because Miles can diy pattern layouts in his head, dye/dip dye/acid wash/paint fabric pretty well. He actually learned it initially from both his father and uncle Aaron. He can use fabric glue and sealant pretty well, and can use acrylics and tea and coffee for cosplay style costume aging. While he's better at drawing, his dad taught him pastel dying with stuff like kool-aid, and how to properly iron patches onto his jackets and backpack. His uncle Aaron would always help little Miles out around Halloween time, and Miles learned things like placement, making texture, and making shadows and highlights with things like fabric paint and hairspray for costumes.
Peni is generally the worst of them in terms of sewing. Partially because she has no interest in it, and partially because her interests in science and technology tends to bleed into her other interests. As in, she's the kind of person who would rather make a Lazer scanner to get your measurements because it's more accurate and time effective versus doing it by hand. She CAN hand sew, kinda, but finds doing it on clothes time-consuming and frustrating. Being from the future, when she does feel like doing cosplay or fixing things, prefers to use her tech because she loves to see how accurately she can recreate things. She introduced the other spiders to characters she cosplays, that have futuristic designs or weapons, that Peni likes to recreate just to challenge herself. If she has to get something done to her clothes beyond her own skill, she prefers to be an informed consumer and look up local businesses to support that can fix her clothes, or where she can buy bolts of fabric that are no longer being mass used (deadstock) so they won't go to waste for Gwen and miles.
That being said, she CAN sew. Kinda. She often goes to Noir for help learning how to do it by hand since he is surprisingly patient with her, compared to an amused Gwen smacking Miles in the head when he doesn't listen. and Peni believes in being fashionable AND functional. She doesn't always have the time or interest for full length projects like Gwen or Miles, but her hand stitching is getting better with practice. Her interests lies more with accessories and decorative designs. She has begun practice on stitching ribbons and bows made of silk, or hair pins, belts, and patches made of fabric flowers/leaves and faux gems and pearls. She has even made the odd plush toy and doll. Noir has been teaching her basic embroidery, and she sometimes helps Gwen and Miles pick accent colors and textures for whatever they're making.
All in all, it's another weird little thing they all have vaguely in common. Ham snickers and jokes that they're Spiders, of course they can stitch stuff together cause that's what they do. But it is nice, having something they can all bond over like this. On good days when they can all hop over to someone's dimension and just need to relax and get things done, every inch of the room will be covered in needles, threads and fabrics of various colors.
Sometimes it's a Learning Day. Noir, Gwen, and Peter B help teach hand stitching, while Peni and Gwen drag Ham along with them to learn. Ham wants Gwen to teach him how to cut, measure, and drape fabric, because just like in the human world, in Ham's world there is a struggle to find clothes that fit certain looks and body types and he would like clothes that FIT please and thank you. He will also help Miles with his hand stitching when the others are busy, and is surprisingly good at distracting Miles long enough that he doesn't get bored when sewing. Noir teaches Peni ladder stitching to fix her plushies, and how to bind and cut fabric edges so she can stitch her silk belts and ribbons in clean lines. Peni shows Noir pictures of different tree and leaf designs, and helps describe the colors to Noir while he copies the unfamiliar shapes onto fabric with markers so he can practice the designs. Peter B teaches Gwen to find the rhythm of her knitting, and how to count time and stitches and rows with songs under her breath. Miles Shows Peni and Noir how to stick patches/ribbons/cloth to bags and clothes, what fabrics work with certain fabric glue, and whether something should be ironed on or sewn on (in which they turn to Noir for help).
Other times it is a Work Day, fun and relaxed but full of concentration. Gwen and Miles will be hunched over her sketchbook, bickering about draping and texture, what colors and patterns work best with what fabrics and what pieces should be layered together, occasionally asking for Peni's thoughts about what spots need something eye catching. Peni will be sitting next to Noir, hunched over with her tongue sticking out of her mouth, small quick hands working stitches into a plush toy or doll dress, or if the kids are working on something together, occasionally silk ribbons or belts with colorful glass beads, or a fabric flower hair piece. Noir is almost always next to her, half-watching her lines and guiding her softly when she gets frustrated, his own fabric pulled tight in his embroidery hoop and thread looping into something beautiful. Ham sits across from Gwen, grumbling as he fixes the holes in his work shirts and pants, and occasionally having Gwen help him redesign something that just doesn't fit right because he is working on a reporters salary and can't afford to waste it on clothes that aren't built for him. Peter B winces in empathy because he has BEEN there, and hums as he counts rows for the scarves and blankets that will help the others survive a New York Christmas. Occasionally, if Gwen is busy, Miles asks for Peter B to help him stitch his costume together, and amid bickering and exaggerated groans of death by boredom Miles feels a little proud of his stitches, neater and more precise than anything he has done so far.

Toho RJ 2021 costumes? What do you think?
Thanks for the question!
....so, I actually unfollowed the RetJ Toho page. Because as much as I ADORE Toho RetJ, I actually couldn’t sit by for this production, I was so discouraged, and the more I looked, the more I was discouraged, so I didn’t even stay long enough for the costume reveals. That being said.... I do have MIXED opinions .
Which is actually better than it sounds, because as much as I hate almost everything I’ve been hearing about this production, “mixed” is actually positive-leaning.
Romeo’s costume looks considerably cleaner, but also....cheap?
Let’s compare:
Tumblr media
(Yes, I’m showing Ohno. Yes, we’re at THAT point.)
Tumblr media
The new one looks like Romeo just....grabbed it off the rack? As opposed to it being something that he actually wears every day? It looks BETTER, more streamlined, but it looks more like a costumme™ VS something that really fits the setting, much less something that fits ROMEO as a character. (Dye it red and it would be a suitable Tybalt costume.) Part of why I actually HATED RetJ Toho’s costuming the very first time I saw previews for it was that I thought that, well....they were hideous. They were hideous, they were cheap, they looked like anything you could see on the STREET, and I wanted my pretty flowing gowns BACK.
BUT! Then, as time went on, as I saw the full musical, I realized the genius behind them: They perfectly suited the world that THIS particular production wanted to show. No, you couldn’t put them on the French cast, because they aren’t the French cast - They have an entirely new setting to work with, rougher, grittier, just several degrees removed from us. So, in that context, do I think that Romeo’s costume works for Romeo Montague, the character, in the setting that Toho’s created? Not really. It looks BETTER, I think, in the sense that it’s something I, personally, would be more willing to wear, I like the cut better, I like the darker colors, I like the design, I like the silver accents and the overall color scheme, but it isn’t something that FITS. (Also am I high or does the strap on the shoulder somewhat look like his new Zuka look?)
I do like Mercutio and Benvolio more because, in their case, I was (1) Never particularly ATTACHED to the old designs - I never particularly cared for how busy they were and the color scheme always seemed rather bleh (though I understood the IDEA behind it, as far as showing that, even though the Montagues looked like a mess, they had more cohesion as a group than the Capulets) and (2) ....I do like the Renaissance styled cut sleeves. I can see, in those cases, a bit of method behind the madness, and I respect it. I respect combining 16th century and modern fashion to create a contemporary look that still references the original. (Look. I’m still in love with the choices made in Julie Taymor’s Tempest.)
Tumblr media
Only problem is that Benvolio does look LESS “Gang Leader” and more “Fratboy Who Thinks That Cutting Down On Starbucks Will Fix Your Student Debt.”
As opposed to this mess who has definitely lost his phone in one of his pockets at some point:
Tumblr media
Juliette runs into a similar problem as Romeo:
Tumblr media
On one hand, I do like ASPECTS of it. I like the color scheme, the red accents really hold the whole thing together, though I’d leave that belt (which also reminds me unfortunately of the Red Leather Belt of Horror from the recent Zuka production.) I like the sleeves because, once again, Italian Renaissance fashion being modernized, but I’m also still not really sold it fits the world of TOHO RetJ. It DOES fit Juliette more as a character than Romeo’s. A part of me like the collar and the layering - Even if it makes for a gown that looks either....I want to say 19th century or 1950s (I can almost see her going on a milkshake date with Romeo), which really works with that idea of Juliette kind of having a cute “vintage” aesthetic, which we can see even back in the 2019 production.
Tumblr media
VS this, which has less of a vintage appeal (though it DOES still have that styling, with both the jacket and the skirt, I would still place her style around the 1950s), is probably something that I would be less inclined to pick up if I had to choose between one or the other, but that kind of fits the idea of a princess growing up in this totally ruined town (and also looks more like regular street fashion). Verona’s still a bit of a wasteland, we get that distinct vibe from the projections, even if they’re now far enough out from the nuclear explosion to have trees again. It doesn’t really make sense for me that Juliette would have this fresh off the rack look, even if Daddy C spoils her, because (1) He’s broke and (2) ....logistically, it would be a nightmare. Clothing would have to be made to last, like 2019 Juliette, who’s wearing NICE clothes, but clothes that are more practical, more likely something that she’s worn a few times. (But also. The new shoes are CUTE. I can admit it.) It’s also what makes Paris stand out: He DOES have an impractical, shiny costume that he must have spent a FORTUNE on, because he has money to burn and no sense.
Tumblr media
No signs of intelligent life found here.
The rest....I wasn’t too invested in the changes one way or another, only thing I really noted was that Lady C’s corset’s a bit of a letdown. We really went from:
Tumblr media
To
Tumblr media
The result is flat and rather cheap, the buckle looking like a failed attempt at ornamentation that really ends up just coming out of nowhere.
THAT being said: Oka Kojiro back in his gray Peyrol coat for Escalus really makes me feel like coming home, I’ve missed seeing that man on stage, I’ve missed seeing him in gray, barking at actors decades his junior, so you know what? Maybe, just maybe.........I will keep a slightly closer eye on this. I won’t pretend that I’m more encouraged than I am, but I like the Juliettes and I like Escalus and tbh, they’re my favorite characters anyway so......
Overall.........I can’t say that I hate everything they’ve done. Quite a few of them are pretty, I like the hints of historical fashion, but I also feel like they’re kind of losing that strong sense of setting that really makes the Toho distinct from basically any other production of RetJ out there (yes....even as opposed to ResJ).

Unleash Your Persona!
By: KL Tiago
Persona 5, the JRPG from Atlus, is one of the best games of this year as well as all time.  In my opinion.  But also it’s true.
The characters are thought out and interesting. The story is deep and engaging. The gameplay is fun and strategic. The soundtrack is out of this world. It's overall just an amazing piece of work.
One of the best things about this game, beyond the aforementioned points, is its visuals.  Persona 5 bleeds aesthetic.  The anime-style comes through in the character design, the musical choices, the fonts; everything.  It's all very uniquely Persona and all very amazing.
What I want to dissect specifically, is the fashion. The costume design of this game is top-notch.  Character outfits are fashionable, stylish, funky, and on-trend. I'm going to go one by one through the Phantom Thieves’ battle costumes to discuss what a fabulous job this game did with its aesthetics and their fashion choices.
First up, the main protagonist Akira Kurusu aka Joker.  Black trench coat with an oversized turned up collar?  Yas.  Boots with the hint of a heel and slightly curled toe?  Yas.  Fit-ted vest to snatch that motherfucking waist to Hades?  Yas, bitch.  A secretive, white, pointy mask to hide all of the Joker’s got-damn secrets? Yas.  Red accent gloves?  You betta believe it!  Akira is serving some midnight-warrior-Protagonist-realness and will lead you straight to fashion nirvana.
Ryuji Sakamoto, your first friend, goes by Skull. Henny is giving you knee pads for safety and fun.  Pants tight like the bonds of friendship, complete with anime-trope-doubled-up, X-crossed belts.  Yes they’re functional too, miss-miss.  Where else would Skull hold his shotgun shells?  Fashion and function, yes, ma’am.  Did I mention the yellow gloves and thin red scarf to maximize the accessorize?  I did now.
Who’s that blonde in the drastically-impractical zip-up, red leather body suit?  Miss Panther: Ann Takamaki.  It is what?  Glued to her body.  She is where?  Covered head to toe except for a very-practical boob-window. Mmm-hmm.  Do those thigh-high boots zip up?  NO MA’AM: they are pulled high as Heaven brought up by the Lordt.  And don’t think for one motherfucking minute Ann left her accessories at home.  Her purr-fect primadonna mask faces some feline features and her hot pink gloves are giving Barbie, Kirby and Kimberly Ann Hart respiratory problems.  She is painting the town red with her colour-palette, honey.  Live.
Yusuke Kitagawa, the stone-cold Fox with a mask of a Kitsune. HUH-KNEE.  Yu-su-ke-is-snatched-like-but-ter-he-is-run-ning-with-this-look-to-the-run-way.  That collar is up to HERE, honey.  His outfit is fitting like his ice-blue gloves–like butter!–creamy, silky, smooth. Sleek, is his look.  But wait!  Flounce, darling!  Flounce!  Are those sleeves puffed like a pastry?  Mama, yas!  Are those knee-high boots white like a wedding dress?  Bitch-is-PURE.  What’s that striped blue and white sash hiding, Yusuke?  Mr. Kitagawa, is that a fluffy tail, you furry trash?  MA-MA, YAS!
Next up is queen, kween and also codenamed Queen: Makoto Nijima.  Her outfit is black as?  Night.  Her corset-inspired leather is? Dangerous.  Those spiky shoulders are giving me Balmain in a war-zone, honey.   She is a steel-toed, iron-masked, deadly-fisted honor-student from the right-side of the tracks and she will rip out that throat and help you study arithmetic, honey.  She is a whom?  Multitasker.  Ask Miss Makoto if you can borrow her lengthy, flowing, beautiful black sash to hang yourself with because her look will leave you deceased.
Sakura-comma-Futaba.  Baby-girl better get herself out of her socially-anxious closet because the world needs to see her LOOK.  Little lady isn’t called Oracle for nothing honey.  Those cute, bug-eyed, red goggles of hers can see into your soul, can see into your mind, can see into the future, Miss-Honey.  Which is where she pulled this Tron-gone-fashion aesthetique.  Those neon green lines are pulsing over that slight frame, Futaba.  Those popping green fingers, heels and toes are hacking into fashion, Futaba.  You may not know how to hold a normal conversation, Futaba, but honey can hold an outfit.
The Heiress of a hamburger fortune, lemme take a bite out of Haru Okumura: M’ilady of the dark, mademoiselle Noir.   Let’s start from the top, shall we. Bitch-that-feath-thered-hat-is-give-ing-me-ev-ry-thing.  It’s cute.  It’s Shakespeare.  It’s delicious.  Lady Okumura, where did you get that lilac pink blouse because I need it.  I need that adorable vest to make it an ensemble, and the lil’ silk tie to circle dat throat.  Mm-kay?  Call Ryuji, his shotgun shell belt just became last season.  Haru is holding.  Grenades that is.  Which she launches, honey, like she launches us into fashion celestiality with those poofy short-shorts, black leggings and good-girl loafers.  Haru may be armed with an axe, but she’ll behead me with her own two hands in those hot-purple leather gloves, ma’am!
Is the dissection over?  NO MA’AM!  It is NOT! No team of heart-stealing fashion-bandits is complete without animal aid!  Meowing Morgana pulls up to the curb in them-got-damn-self because Miss-Codename: Mona can transform into a bus. Yes queen!  This feline accessorizes with a 2.3L turbo-4 engine and 300 horesepower!  Handy and fashion: because that bus has ears.  For what?  To hear the haters coming and drive the fuck away, Miss-Miss!  Morgana is serving adorable-counterpart-reality with a cute yellow handkerchief collaring that cute, kitty-cat neck.
The Phantom Thieves are what?  Sickening.  They have stolen what?  Your heart.  Why?  Because: fashion.
If you still doubt me in terms of the incredibleness of Persona 5, I can’t help you.  Honestly, seeing them should have been enough to make you place an Amazon order or get your ass down to a GameStop.  Love yourself: play Persona 5.  Or do one better: dress like Persona 5.
Turn up that collar.  Accessorize with too many belts.  Feather that hat, honey.  Make yourself into the person you wish you’d be with all the craze and fabulous you deserve. Unleash your Persona!  Unleash fashion!
Persona 5 is available for PlayStation 4.

Season 1 Episode 11- The First Finale
This season was a standard bearer for finale collections to come.  All three showed a distinct point of view and what designers could do with reasonable amounts of time and money.  Not every collection was perfect but they all did have their redeeming qualities and pieces.
Side note: I will go to my grave defending Wendy regarding the Wendy Pepper situation.
Onto the collections
3. Wendy
This collection was the epitome of Wendy Pepper.  There were many things both wrong with and, but also many things quite beautiful and refined.  As a designer she never really found herself on the show, vacillating between her aesthetic and what she thought the judges wanted to see from her.  She was truly a designer who designed for the American woman who didn’t need crazy silhouettes or outrageous fabrics to feel bold an beautiful.  Rewatching this finale show, I liked it much better than I did the first time, though it is still not without it’s faults.  Could I be looking at it with rose colored glasses?  Possibly, but that’s the beauty of nostalgia.
Tumblr media
Like I said, she designs for the everyday American woman.  That coat, though puckered, is the definition of luxe and the color pallet is extremely rich in it’s tones.
Tumblr media
That jacket is everything and I really wish I owned it.  The sheen is a great contrast to the matte finish of every other piece in her first two looks.  The shirt and pants, though well made, are fairly basic.
Tumblr media
There is no reason for this to be at NYFW.  There is interest in the color and texture but the actual design is a 50′s throwback with no innovation.
Tumblr media
Part of the problem is that the model looks like a strung out heroin addict, and part of the problem is the actual design.  The skirt is a nothing piece and the top is a chewed up mess.  This also has no relation to her first 3 looks.
Tumblr media
It was smart of her to add a suit to her collection, but this suit was a bad decision.  It’s pretty basic in its cut and finishing and the fabric is turning me off big time.
Tumblr media
Now we enter the gown portion of Wendy’s show which has no relation to the first half.  The problem was her show was too disjointed for a 10 look showing.
This dress from the back is cute and I like the fabric play, but the front is sloppy.  I don’t get her obsession with rouching down the sternum.
Tumblr media
Benjamin would get eliminated in season 11 for creating this same look out of the same fabric FOR A 70 YEAR OLD WOMAN
Tumblr media
The abrupt change is fabric is a bit jarring, especially because it is literally an inch below her waist.  This color though...she needed to run with it, it was in the best pieces in her collection.
Tumblr media
Wendy’s finale piece was stunning, and is my favorite thing Wendy made on the show.  The corset is interesting as it a new take on the corset and the proportion of the skirt is perfect.  And I can still tell this this a Wendy’s look as it mixes sportswear fabrications with elegant designs.
2. Kara Saun
It seemed like Kara had this thing in the bag considering her astounding success with the judges on the show, winning four challenges and never being in true trouble with the judges.  Her shoes were clearly in breach of the contract and if I were Tim Gunn and the producers I would have made her nix them the day of the show.  The actually clothes in her collection were very good, and would have probably won if she created one cohesive collection.  She created two collections, one of 40s menswear and one of gorgeous evening gowns.  They just didn’t mesh.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately it looks more like a costume than a fashion show.  Get rid of the hat and pair that jacket with a pairof brown cigarette pants and that jacket would sing.  I love the colors.
Tumblr media
This dress is gorgeous and has absolutely no relation her first look outside of color.  I can see them in the same collection if we has some transition in between.
Tumblr media
Why were this look and her opening look separated by a gown?  This is much less costume and shows serious detail work. Just get rid of the hat again.  I could see many women wearing a version of this as a jacket.
Tumblr media
Back to gowns.  This is less successful than her first gown,  The cut of the top makes her hips look big and it doesn’t look fitted properly.  The bow adds enough drama to make it suffice-able.
Tumblr media
This is the best of her 40′s pilot inspired looks.  The jacket is divine as is the top underneath.  I love the metallic green of the pussy bow and sleeves.  That cropped pant length surprisingly works on her this look.
Tumblr media
Had she used a piece like this to transition from her pilot looks to gowns I would have liked the show as a while much better.  The belt is a bit much but I love that she was able to show so much skin up top yet still create a classy cocktail dress.
Tumblr media
The length of the hem bothers me, but other than that this is a solid entry.  It just doesn’t wow me.
Tumblr media
When Kara gets it right she really gets it right.  This was my favorite looks of her collection and I would fight for that jacket.  The fur placement at the elbows should never work, but she made it work.
Tumblr media
It’s the same top she has made at least twice before in this collection, and shirt doesn’t add anything new.  The fur on top is bulky.
Tumblr media
It is gorgeous and red carpet ready, but it doesn’t wow me.  They were referencing Gucci with this look all episode and I couldn’t agree more.  It is still a wonderful finale piece.
1. Jay
I am a sucker for three things: A bold runway, saturated colors, and cozy winter wear, all of which Jay possessed.  This show was not without it’s faults but overall it is one of the best in PR history.  He was able to make 10 distinct winter wear looks without it ever getting repetitive and even incorporated a gown.  And the idea to use the headphones was genius as it gave his entire collection a cool girl vibe.  Loved it.
Tumblr media
My least favorite piece of his collection.  I don’t like the color of the wrap and the skirt to legging proportion is off.  The design of the wrap is cool, I just wish this was in a bright yellow instead of gold.
Tumblr media
I have a love hate relationship with this look.  I love the colors, the top and the leather belt, but I hate the skirt.  2004 was an interesting time. This look also seems odd in the context of the super saturated artificial colors of the rest of the collection.
Tumblr media
Full transparency: I HATE pins. Don’t ask my why I don’t know, it’s just a taste thing for me. That being said everything else about this look is killer.  The fest is cool and hits his model in all of the right places.  The pant’s are cool and slouchy and go well with the relative sleekness of the top underneath.
Tumblr media
A few times in Jay’s collection you get a breath of fresh air and this is one of them.  It is such a soft and whimsical look, yet I could see a hip New York woman rocking it.  And the fabric manipulation of the skirt is 100% Jay.
Tumblr media
It’s no secret that Jay knocked it out of the park with his blue section.  This probably my favorite look of the entire finale and set a standard for future seasons.  It oozes luxury.
Tumblr media
That print is killer and goes great with the rest of his collection.  It is for a younger audience than the rest of his collection for sure but you need that.  My only issue is the massive cuff on the jeans, it makes her look short.
Tumblr media
One of the more successful hoodie looks on Project Runway.  I wish this was in a bright saturated color to make it a little more special, and those leg muffs are a no no.
Tumblr media
I love the use of this color to break up the dark blues and maroons, but the top is just too busy.  I think he was going for an airier look, but it just looks a bit tortured.
Tumblr media
Give me that coat.  Jay won ebcause he showed an extremely clear point of view as a designer: new American Sportswear with traditional high end techniques.  The way he quilted the leather and wool(?) together made for a truly special piece.
Tumblr media
I honestly can not find a flaw with this look, and I would consider it a near perfect dress on today’s project runway.  The way he integrated a red carpet gown so seamlessly into a winter collection without throwing a coat on it was amazing.  Only a few other designers (Sean and Ayana off the top of my head) have had such a striking closing piece.

Tumblr media
Doc Morgan is trans and has transitioned socially and medically.  His latest body had attributes that made it very appealing for work purposes, but he had to do some remodeling after he moved in.  He’s quite happy with it now.
Noah is genderfluid. Still in development so I’m not 100% sure whether he’s AFAB or AMAB.
Everyone else is pretty embarrassingly cis, actually. I should probably fix that.
Tumblr media
You know, I hadn’t given much thought to this beyond “Doc Morgan definitely knits”..  But I think Danny should learn (probably crochet, though). He would only want to do very simple things, so it’d be good for his anxiety. And tabletop Kell probably picked it up from his mistress and now does it just to pass the time. He can’t sleep or cook constantly, and on a boat there’s not much to do if you aren’t crew.
Tumblr media
To some extent, every OC will suffer from my own preferences for what I like to see people wear.
You can see a shitton of Ariel’s underwear on this Pinterest board, which is the reason I have a Pinterest account, despite hating that hellsite. It was just the most expedient way to quickly compile a list of character references.  He’s fond of cute, colorful, and goofy for everyday wear, and loves jockstraps for sexytimes because let’s be real here, his ass is incredible. Anything he wears fits well, even the stuff that looks like it came out of the trash, so he always looks hot.
Danny likes low-slung briefs and hipster boxer briefs in fun, sexy fabrics for dancing.  He also likes a little bit of lace for sexy times.  Lacy undies under cutoffs.  Mmm.
Doc Morgan, honestly, I have no fucking idea. His relationship to sex/sexiness is so fucking weird.  He doesn’t understand cultural ideas about “sexy” and is liable to wildly misinterpret the point of any given sexy “look” which I think leads to a complete inability to straight-facedly present himself in a sexy way.  He just can’t conceptualize it.  I have a feeling it’s, like . . . if he’s going to wear something sexy, it’s going to be to intimidate, so . . . polyvinyl stockings and garter belt, thigh tattoos, combat boots, and BLOOD EVERYWHERE. “Is the point not to give you an idea of what it’d be like to ‘sex me up’? Doesn’t this give you a pretty good idea?  ...WHAT?”
Joey prefers cute bikini briefs for everyday wear.  Her taste in fun lingerie is very burlesque and camp.  She prefers pink and black.  She’s very fucking cute, so she can pull off anything.
Kell, man, nobody appreciates quality underthings more than he does. Mostly he prefers to look, but he loves soft and silky things against his skin.  Tabletop Kell is stuck in a pre-elastic world where underwear is pretty hopelessly frumpy, but real-world Kell would positively wallow in satin and silk.  I could see him wearing lacy things, too.  Given he’s literally the size of a fucking bear, this is actually really goddamn cute.  He tried on a corset once and it gave him SO MUCH respect for women.  There’s this stuff called butterknit. If you’ve ever felt it, it’s the softest goddamn thing. Silky, heavy, stretchy, lots of motion when it drapes. He would LOVE something like it.
Sebastian prefers unremarkable but classy boxer briefs. He has good legs, though, and before she died he let his mistress dress him up sometimes for a little fun.
Solomon: he just makes sure that anything he wears is cut flatteringly, and that alone means it’s going to be sexy as hell because he’s very pretty.  He tends to like nice jewel tones or black. Does not have the goofy/cute aesthetic thing going on that his brother does. Wears the occasional super-silky microfiber thing just for fun or lounging or for sexytimes.
Tank wears boxer briefs or no underwear at all.  Fan of going commando.
Thane doesn’t really “get” sexy underwear, since he doesn’t have much of a concept of himself as the kind of “sexy” that benefits from dressing up. He has graduated from black/gray/blue/red boxer briefs to more colors and styles, mostly thanks to his boyfriend buying him things and saying “wear this.”  He doesn’t have preferences except “cover everything, Mattie approves.”

Main Challenge #1 - The Queens Who Mopped Concepts
This week, the girls were tasked with interpreting and producing their cycle 9 sister’s mini challenge concepts! Let’s see how they did!
Analyse Thropic - Judah Kiss’ Flame Concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I chose Judah’s fire dress design because I saw in it the opportunity to take a great concept and develop it into something that matches my aesthetic. The character I created for this design is a witch who was burned at the stake and has come back hundreds of years later to exact her revenge. I loved the print of Judah’s original sketch that reminded me of fallen ash, and so when I was unable to find a fabric close to that print, I bought a white stretch knit and used fabric paint and a drinking straw to create the scattered “ash” pattern on the fabric. I also wanted to maintain the juxtaposition of beauty and destruction that comes across in Judah’s design, and so I chose to create faux burn holes in the dress as well as carrying the idea of burn over to the makeup. The red collar in Judah’s sketch inspired the cape and the cuffs in my design.
Lila: I just refuse to believe that you come from Charm School, at the beginning of it, not knowing how to sew, to making a full dress with this burning look, UGH. It’s just to die for. Your SFX skills are so good, like texture artists can’t do that molten lava shit, and ugh, I could go on, and on, but you know this is TDR, and I have to be a little bit of a nitpicker here. I wanted your velour-cape to hit the ground, and that could’ve helped with pairing the shoe with your concept a lot better. It’s a solid look in my opinion, Great job here, Analyse!
Gluttoni: Ms. Anal If You Nasty, you clearly are out for blood in this competition! That definitely shows through your dedication to the execution of Judah's original concept. Overall I think your adaptability and vigor for drag itself will not only get you far in this competition but also in the real big bad draggy world out there. As someone who get a boner over conceptual makeup styles, I have to say you really raised the stakes (as well as got burned on one) with this extreme third degree burn makeup application. Especially with it being your first attempt. I can definitely see the progression in your overall makeup skills with your new and improved cleaner lines but I will urge you in the future to push it even more so don't get complacent. Enough of the praise though because everything below that beautiful crystal necklace and oxblood cape  is a mess in my eyes. Not because of the the evident burns or hole but the entire fit is off and completely uninspired. I remember giving you a direct reference to one of Jeremy Scott's recent collections and expected a cool silhouette from you but I must say that's where my disappointment starts. Just be more aware of your body shape and try to make somethings that comes off as more flattering to your figure. This is a solid first submission and your talents are evident. I'm eager to see more.
Letha: Goodness gracious, great balls of fire! I love this look, Analyse! You executed Judah’s concept while adding your own flair to it, which I think really embodies the challenge parameters. There’s a wonderful campiness to the look, while still reading as fierce. I like the hair and hood a lot, they go amazingly with everything. The burns on the dress are awesome, but I think the fit leaves something to be desired. If it nipped in closer to the body at the waist it would be better, as it is a touch loose there at the moment. I also don’t love the final length of the dress. You were talking with us about a high/low hemline, which would have been great if it were lowered more to the ground and you had added some trim or fringe as an accent. The makeup is verrrry good, especially the burn side. The virgin side (as virgin as you can be, anyway) could use some more blending on the eyes, and sharpening of the “leading” edges of the contour (the bottom of the cheek, for instance), but I love the brow and the lip is cool. Nice accessories, and I love the nails, they’re quite fun. All in all, STUNNING work, Analyse, I’m glad to see you kept the momentum form your mini challenge win up, I can’t wait to see what you do next!
Toni: Honesty???? Your pussy is on fire this week bitch! to win the mini and then come right back to the main with this level of concept, quality and thought has me shook. I love that you spoke with the judges every step of the way to make sure your look was right. I love LOVE LOVE THE MAKEUP. The burn is everything to me and is well done for your first time. The drag side was very well done and probably the best you have looked. I would love to see a bit cleaner lines as well as raising your contours a bit more. I think the gown was stunning really, but I was it was longer to really hold a high level of beauty. It also could have done with a bit more of the burn or fire put into it. You are using your corset as a fancy belt right now because its not being pulled as tight as it can be, you shouldn't be able to breathe. Over all amazing work, keep it up!
Gii: I wish the other girls would take note of how much you worked with the judges on discussing your look from start to finish, asking them for help when you had technical problems, and got our advice at various stages of your creative process. That alone gave you a huge advantage because now the judges and I have a better understanding of your look. That said, I can appreciate all the work that went into this dress, but I think I want to see more cinching from you! I know you have a corset so get a friend to really PULL on those corset strings, I find that it’s impossible to get that typical corseted waist without someone’s help. Even without cinching though, I think it would have helped if the hem of the dress was higher, like on the narrow part of your waist rather than your hips. On your makeup, I think you’ve worked really hard to make the lines on the drag side crisp and bold and it’s a huge improvement from what I saw in Charm School! The eyes are nice, but I think the lips could be a little neater with the blending. I think you could make your lower lip even bigger since you have a lot of space around your chin too. Still, great job. I think you’ve come a long way since Charm School (which is great -- I was rooting for you during that stint) and I can’t wait to see where else you’ll go in this competition!
Avana Noir - Ebony Boss’ Paint Concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hello Judges and TDR community ! For my look I got Ebonys Paint inspired look. I was mainly inspired by Avant Garde Unconventional Materials as well as watercolors. What I did differently was that I used Paper and Watercolor to make the top part of the dress and set it up to make it look more structural. For the lower part I made a high waisted skirt and then dyed the shit out of it haha. As well as using splatter paint. I also made a headpiece out of a canvas. The watercolor done it was also done by me. Thank you so much! and I hope you enjoy my look!
Lila: Hi Avana! I’ll start out by saying that I love the colour palette you’ve chosen, very similar to the one that Ebony picked but the pastel nature of it really fits your aesthetic. I thank you for doing an unconventional look, I love it when people experiment with different materials, and I’m in love, LOVE with your headpiece. Very alternative and I’m in love! I wish your heels were a different colour, I wish it was a white, green or blue, just so that it ties in with your look, and as much as I LOVE LOVE LOVE your nails, the other hand doesn’t have any on either. Overall, great job!
Gluttoni: Avana! I'm in love with these colors you've chose to highlight with this beautiful look. I can see the inspiration very clearly from the drawing you were assigned but I love that you still took it and made it your own. The water color motif on your chest is beautifully placed and I love the resourcefulness of it all but I'd urge you with making details like that please try and make them neater otherwise they come off as cheap and rushed. I've noticed how much you work doing your day job and I'm completely emphatic about that kind of stuff but no need to look overworked henny. I think my love for the color palette of this look is detracting me from some technical difficulties I'm having with the overall look. Such as your "breast" are showing due to fitting issues and if you are going to do a long length make sure it hits the floor. I love the canvas headpiece because it gives the look an overall finished look along with the calming aqua hair color but on the same token I'd love to see more refinement with both aspects. I think the only major downfall I have from this look is the makeup. Out of drag you are youthful and cute but I'm think just through a lack of experience you are painting yourself to look much older with almost like a dead fish type of gaze. Be wary of the shapes you are trying to convey while making sure all your lines are crisp. I'm confident in your ability to do so and you should honestly be proud of this.
Letha: In case the literal canvas on your head wasn’t enough of a tip off, I immediately got watercolor from your pictures without reading your description, which is a great sign that your interpretation and execution of Ebony’s concept was strong. I personally love the color palette, and it carries throughout the look. I quite enjoy the paper bodice you made, but I do wish the dress had either a bit more structure or a bit more shape to it, as it is sort of straight up/down at the moment. The wig and head piece go well together and match the rest of the look, and the makeup is also cohesive, but I feel the lip shape reads more “sloppy” than water color, perhaps doing more of a light pink ombre with some paint splatters around/over the lips would have been more effective? The nails are massive and fun, but I wish you had more of them on! Still, this is a good look and you should be proud of your work on it!
Toni: Hello dear! This looks absolutely nothing like ebonys but I can see the same influences and I really like that! I think making it water color really made it pop a bit more in my eyes. I also have to give you props for using unconventional materials. I do wish the dress was more fitting because girl both ya titties were out and the dress was a bit too short. I love your head piece. Onto your makeup I wish you were a bit more blended on the cheeks and in the eyes. I would also love if you took a brush and teased out that wig a bit more for more volume. Good luck next week love!
Gii: Your final look was definitely far from Ebony’s original design, but somehow I can still see the inspiration in there. I think it’s the color scheme (although much paler) and the fact that you did attempt the paint blobs in the original design. While the colors aren’t exact, I do like the pastel version more than the original. The easel was a pretty funny and fitting touch as well. The biggest thing I notice, however, is that this dress doesn’t seem flattering on you. It’s a little hard to tell that the dress is high-waisted because the paper bodice is like...right at that level where I wish it was either a bit higher or lower haha. I think you could have actually gone for a corset + dress silhouette as opposed to the high-waisted silhouette, because that would probably flatter your body much more. With the high-waisted silhouette you went for though, I think the skirt could have been floor length so it would look much more elegant. You can probably keep that in mind for future looks! Makeup-wise, when doing looks with colorful eyeshadows you still want to define the edges with blacks or very dark colors, as it is very easy for the bright colors to appear washed out otherwise. Overall, I didn’t hate this look and for a first challenge you did pretty well, but there’re definitely things that could be tweaked or improved. I’m hoping to see you grow a lot by the end of the competition!
Daddie Dearest - Phoebe St. Jefferson’s Blacklight UV Concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My gown is inspired by Phoebe's concept. It keeps the asymmetrical silhouette, the structured shoulders, and the blacklight transformation. I also tried to incorporate some of the judges critiques of Phoebe's design by including a matching head piece and gloves. I made the skirt out of fabric, hot glue, and satantic rituals. The textural element of the gown is made of paint chips spray painted with fluorescent yellow and splattered with green acrylic paint. I decided to make the pieces diamond shaped to harken back to Alexis Michelle's promo dress which inspired Phoebe's original concept. I'm looking forward to hearing the judge's feedback. Thanks!
Lila: Hey hey hey! Okay, immediately drawn to this because of the colour scheme and the fact that you did the UV aspect too because I wasn’t expecting that for this concept, rather one or the other. I just love your face, you’re another one of those porcelain dolls, its just the way you incorporate your bearded drag into your look and how you carve out your face. Things I wish that were a little bit improved, I feel like the grey wig doesn’t match your concept here, and while I’ll give it to you that you styled it similarly to Phoebe’s character, it just blends in with the background in both photos. If you used a black or stark yellow/green, it could’ve been so much more impactful? Anyways, besides that, great submission here, Daddie!
Gluttoni: Daddie! Daddie! DADDIE! Not only can I say your name all day but I'm also extremely floored by the grandness and the boss ass bitch vibes I'm getting from this look. Honestly there is nothing more appealing than a boss bitch in my eyes and I think you really take the cake in that category in my eyes. TENS ACROSS THE BOARD. You're fucking glowing and mean that quite literally which just skyrockets this look to the level of other worldly. The asymmetrical silhouette is making my nipples hard along with that hair that's teased to perfection. You're one I think has a grasp on what shapes highlight your body in the best way possible. Not a lot of people have that same understanding even later in their careers so it's refreshing you understand your body so early on. I'm in love with your makeup because you definitely have the precision down-packed and the proportions are soooo on. The most outstanding part is that your beard is one of the last things I notice cause I'm focused on how much detail you put into your eye makeup and when I finally analyze your facial hair only to realize it's completely coordinated with the look has me absolutely gagged. I can tell you perform live with your nude fishnet tights and I definitely appreciate that added detail. I honestly can't really find any flaws in this look so please, please keep steering in this direction of greatness because at this rate I think these other ladies need to watch out for you because you are serious competition.
Letha: “Get that black light away from MY sheets!” This is such a cool look, Daddie! At first I didn’t see the silhouette from Phoebe’s design, but I’m with you on it now. I love that you incorporated our critiques as well, as I love the gloves and the fascinator! The hair isn’t my favorite, I think something darker would have more impact, given the lightness of the paint chips. The black-light photos are awesome, you made that part of the original concept very special. Your makeup is stunning, as always, and the echoing of the colors/shapes of the design is a nice touch (including the glow in the dark nose contour, though it makes your nose look a tad bare when it’s just the regular lights). Fantastic submission, Daddie, color me impressed!
Toni:BITCH OKAY I SEE YOU. theres so much i love about this and some things im not super feeling. I adore the acessories and they were so cleverly done and I do love these tones. I was also pleased that you chose to make yours glow as that was the main point for the orgional design. the only thing that really threw to  phoebes was the glow and the asymmetry. i really love this i see all your influences, i do wish the dress was a bit more put together like construction wise thought. As always i lvoe your makeup, from the shoulders up this look is giving me Opulence Black vibes and I live. Good luck this next week <3
Gii: Wow! I have to admit I wasn’t sure how the WIPs you sent me were gonna turn out, but you really knocked it out of the park with the final project! You did really well carrying out all the original intentions of Phoebe’s design, with the asymmetry and especially the glow in the dark part. I do find myself loving the non-glowing version more than the glowing version (though this may be attributed to the pose), and the top half more than the bottom. I think we lose a bit of your shape in the dress, though I understand that you were trying to stay true to the design. I wonder if an updo would have worked better since it’s already so busy in the neck area. But I think more importantly a better photography angle would have flattered you more, perhaps one that is further away and not so top-down. You could try out different poses as well. However, I will give you kudos for creating this dress purely with hot glue! What a great example for queens who can’t sew!
Dotte Com -Marcella Fox’s Aquamarine Latex Concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The outfit I was assigned was created by the talents of Marcella Fox. Based off of Katya’s “Pokestop Realness” blue latex look, she altered the design to be something that the 16 year old drag queen, Ms. Fox would wear. I decided to interpret HER source material and also transform Katyas outfit and Marcellas outfit into something Dotte would wear.
The shape of the arm capes were inspired from Marcellas design, however red hair was substituted for yellow as Dotte is all about that CMYK lyfe. The basic placement of the floral arrangements were kept the same, excluding the two flowers in the hair vs a flower crown. Materials utilized were spandex to increase dancey-ness, leather belts, flowers, and a bit of hand-sewn pixel perfection.
Lila: Dotte! I see a lot of elements from Marcella’s original concept in here, and its really giving me like grass-water gym leader extravaganza. You know I love the colour scheme of blue-magenta-yellow and that’s what’s captivating me the most in this concept. I wish that the pastel green was more suited to your hair colour, i think there’s such a balance of blue and pink in here but not enough yellow, and if you swapped the marshy green tone out with a yellow tone it would’ve tied the look together a lot better. Overall, this is a good submission!
Gluttoni: WWW. SICKINGINGBITCH (Miss) Dotte Com! I must admit as a fellow POC kween I'm doing nothing but rooting for your success in this competition.  With that bias aside though I think this is a very middle of the pack kind of look due to the outright simplistic design you choose to present to us. That isn't to say this look is not adorable and aesthetically pleasing because I'd be lying if I said it wasn't but there are just a few elements here that fall a tad flat to me. The hair gives me more Halloween Express than it does drag for me, I'm not upset at the fact that it's straight and I love the color but it could use a fabric softener wash and a good brush out to rid it of that Halloween clearance bin type of look to it. You are going to have a long journey with your makeup with me around because I need the refinement there for you want to stay afloat in this competition. Keep pushing those shapes and blending skills because that will help you in the long run. That aside I love the duality of your cape-like arm attachments and I'm glad you kept that aspect of Marcella's design and the color palette of the Katya reference really complements your skin tone. All in all I'm happy with your submission as should you be but just know I'm expecting more from you. Also TUCK, I mean this sincerely because I know the detriments of having a fat pussy first hand.
Letha: Yay, Dotte! This look is very cute and fun. I think you kept a lot of the same elements of Marcella’s design while making it your own. I think the Katya influence is still very strong because I do get a “synchronized swimmer” vibe, like the original. The color scheme is okay, though I think I would have liked a green/teal more with the pink, but the yellow is cute. I find myself craving more texture/visual interest on the outfit, as it is a little simple, maybe with some pleating or more flowers? The makeup, I must admit, is not my favorite. The lip color makes sense with the look, but I think doing a bit more pink in that eye would have brought more unity to the face, as the purple seems out of place. I think the overdrawing the under eye is cute, but some bottom lashes could also really help to sell that illusion as well. Some stronger highlight/contour could also help you define your face more, as right now I don’t really read a lot of makeup, however much might be there ( a stronger hand with the blush couldn’t hurt either, a doll pink would have been so cute here!). All in all, strong work, Dotte!
Toni: This is giving me girly its giving me frilly its giving em life. This is barbie at the pool living her life. Lets start with the bad and then go into the good. I think you need to start tucking bitch, i can see it all. I also want you to start carving your face with contour and highlight because I think you’ve gotten great with your eyes but need to focus on the face. Now onto the good, even great. I love this on you, it looks like marcellas but you made it into your own look! And these colors are everything on you. Its so fun and flowing and over all i adore it and this submission as a whole is amazing! <3 good job this week
Gii: These colors look so good on you holy fuck! What a gorgeous interpretation of Marcella’s already gorgeous design. I really love the color scheme here, and I think that bright yellow wig is the PERFECT accent. You know how to pose well too. That “purse first”-esque pose is a little awkward and I’d recommend practicing a little more to perfect it, but the other one is really cute! However, I really wish the makeup was a bit cleaner. You have this perfect look that is very neat and smooth and clean but then the makeup doesn’t match it as well as it could. It’s actually not the eyebrow coverage part, everything upper lid + above is fine by me actually. I think where the white ends along the nose could be made smoother if you take concealer to define the edges, but I’d honestly bring it in even more a la Kim Chi. The bottom black + pink eyeshadows look a bit cakey as well, and could have been more nicely blended. I would recommend using an angled brush to draw your black lines, and when blending use small patting motions so you can be more precise since it probably won’t be as blended as the upper lid. So yeah, great job this week, just work on polishing your makeup! Don’t be afraid to wipe it all off and start over if you need to, as long as the end product is flawless it’s totally worth it.
Ebony Boss - Lexi Lamour’s Unconventional Paperclip Concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
SOOOOOOOO... For my interpretation of Lexi's look I really wanted to focus on the silhouette more than the materials. I used a black mesh body suit with a white tulle skirt to get the ballgown vibe. I also chose a wig I had that fit her hair descriptions
Lila:  Ebony Boss! First off, we need to see your top to your bottom of the concept, which means your shoes as well. Please remember to do this next time! Okay, for positives, I love this look from the waist up, it’s really cute and I love the bodysuit’s shape. Your face is a lot better than when you first started out as well! I just don’t see Lexi’s concept being fully realised here. When you said you would use a large tulle skirt, I was expecting a floor length tulle skirt, and with the paper clips from Lexi’s original concpet, you could’ve had so many different motifs with that, black tubing, felt tubes, cardboard cutouts, etc. I wish the wig had a little more volume too, just with a little hairspray and a rat tail comb you could really have a bouffant bob with your look. I wish I could see the shoes too, because it might’ve helped add an element to this concept that feels a little empty in execution. This is a decent look, however. Good job.
Gluttoni: I realize we said "interpretations" but this interpretation is looser than the skin hanging from Donald Trump's neck. I was quite excited to see what someone would bring to Lexi's imaginative design and I must say it seems like you scraped the whole concept as a whole and pieced together an outfit together from Forever21 and The Children's Place. What I enjoy about you most is your passion to learn about the art of drag as a whole but if you really want this title I really want to urge you to go for it full force because I know you have it in you. Otherwise "YOU'S IN DANGER GIRL" (ten points to the queens who get that reference) and I don't want to see you not doing well. If you are to make it to next week I want to see a clean makeup job from you because again I don't think this is the best you are capable of and I want to properly assess what could make you get even better at that what you want to do. Bring us the fire Ebony.
Letha: Hey there, Ebony! While I do think you have the sort of “bare bones” of the original concept’s silhouette, there isn’t much going on beyond that. It reads as pretty basic, which when the look is a black and white color scheme, something in the look should really jump out and make it special. I think you could have kept the skirt if you wanted, and overlaid materials such as pipe cleaners to give it the same effect as the paperclips. The top is okay (the runs in the mesh don’t look great though, covering them up with jewelry or some other piece could help draw attention away from them). The wig also goes very well with the overall look, some volume could help it along though. The makeup is cute as well, but the lips read as very nude to the point of being almost gone, and don’t have a lot of impact. There’s also something on the right corner of your mouth, so be sure to always double check before taking face pics! All in all, it’s an okay look, but I know you have the talent and creativity to do better.
Toni: Ebony dear im so glad you’ve finally make it! Now when we talked I loved your first design and was disappointed when you couldn’t do it, but you said you were gonna do this you assured me that it was going to have the elegance and ball like theme that Lexis design had. When I saw this I was so disappointed. Theres nothing here that even nods to Lexis design. it looks like a top and skirt and not much out, its underwhelming. I think had you incorporated some head piece of giant paper clips or a more exciting skirt with a bit more shape it would have been a real stunner but this is jsut a miss for me this week. Makeup wise ive been seeing you improve so much lately, I would say i’d like to see more dramatic contour/highlight as well as I would like to see your foundation match your skin tone. Points for effort this week <3
Gii: I know it’s hard to create a paper clip dress in real life, but I’m a little disappointed! The judges told me you were thinking about going with recycled materials as the dress and I would have been totally okay with that interpretation, but I’m hoping you didn’t mean recycling clothes. It is very hard to compare this to the other looks when other queens are customizing their dresses and accessories specifically for the challenge while this look gives me the impression that you already had the top and the skirt lying around and just put them together. Even some accessories made out of recycled materials would have helped. Your makeup unfortunately doesn’t read as very draggy to me either, if you can get your hands on a darker contour powder that will transform you from fish to drag. I think if you are doing a cut crease (I can’t tell sorry), you will want to draw it way higher, even if it is far above your natural crease -- drag is all about exaggeration. You’ve wanted to be cast for a while, so I want to see that fighting spirit in you! It’s as easy as just adding a few details, so I know you can do it.
Giraffez Doris Buckel - Paprika’s Wedding Gown Concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I was given Paprika's design and I was really excited where most people saw a very simple and basic outfit I saw a blank canvas. I figured by making my dream wedding. I started by wearing my mom's old wedding dress since she wasn't able to wear it do to contractions from me, I then put a belt from a new coat on to help keep everything in place as well as add a bit of color. I then borrowed some flowers from an old funeral arrangement that was left over from the last funeral which was my grandmother who raised me and since she couldn't be there the next best thing is some of the last flowers that were given to her. I then had a nod to my Scottish roots and wore a blue knotted bracelet since in Scottish tradition of tying of the hands of the couple signify unity and a strong bond. I went with a very subtle beat face just to show how I have grown in my makeup skills. But sadly the rat bastard ran and I ruined my mascara and everything just saying. #fml
Lila: It might be a bit grating to hear me nag at you for another cycle, but we needed to see your top to your bottom of the concept, which means your shoes as well. Your concept matches Paprika’s quite nicely, which I commend you for, and I can see a vast improvement in your makeup game since Charm School - you might want to contour some areas like your forehead and nose, just to add a bit of definition. I’m glad you’ve gave this a left at the altar kind of character too, since we feared that the concept was a little basic, you might’ve had problems constructing something from it. When using a headband to give the illusion of your wig like it’s growing out of your head, you’ve got to make sure that your boy hair doesn’t expose through if you wear the headband like you have. Glue down those side burns and apply foundation like you would on your brows and that will help eliminate that exposure. You did an alright job, none the less!
Gluttoni: Giraffez Doris Buckel along with your name, your sunny prospective on life is what I love most about you. I was so happy when you individually messaged me about the direction you should take in this look because this look you had to reference was by far the most simplistic. Regardless of that I think your interpretation was informed and spot on and I'm glad you took my pointers with the running graphic liner, the expression of sorrow (very campy which I loved) and the roses. But through inexperience I feel this look has fallen short especially when compared to the other racers you're competing with. I'm making it a personally goal of mine to help you all can to make you the best queen you can be. That means making your makeup more definitive and visible and really focusing in on the styling that will really make yourself a brand. This week you just didn't quite hit the mark.
Letha: Hello, Giraffez! When I compare this design to Paprika’s the concept is there and you did stay true to that. With that said, because of the simplicity of the original concept, it should have been your task to really nail the fine details. That dress does not fit, which you could have worked around by having some fabric in the back to help hide it. The black belt does help the look go for that “grunge” vibe which makes sense. The quality of your pics is also a problem, as they are either blurry or low quality (one of the face pics is stable enough though). The hair could be better/bigger, and your boy hair is coming through the front which doesn’t really match. The makeup is subtle, and you have improved since Charm School, but there are still points to work on. More blush could certainly help, and because the lip is shiny your real lips show more obviously where you overdrew. The eyes are grungy/smoky, so I do understand where you went with that, but the blend could be better up top, and the “tears” below, should flow more organically on the bottom (they look just like “streaks” at the moment). I will also repeat what Lila said about taking full body shots- it has to be EVERYTHING. For all we know you aren’t wearing shoes, which you need if you’re going to perform/go out. But I see improvement, so keep it up!
Toni: Hello Giraffez! This gown is absolutely stunning and I think its very appropriate for this design. I do wish that it had a better fit or a bit more to it though so it wasn't just being held up by a belt or your hands. I know that you’re still working on improving your makeup but I would have love to see something much more dramatic, you were left at the alter girl i wanna see dramatic smeared lips, eye liner smeared down to your titties. You did have a bit of performance aspect in your pictures which i did enjoy! Step it up next week!!
Gii:I burst out laughing when I saw your expression in the fullbody pics so you made my day. I was pleasantly surprised by this look -- it was smart of you to use a headband to hide your wig line, the flowers are pretty, and the belt cinches you nicely. However, you were given a rather simple design, and while your look is not bad, you can do better. “Not bad” is fine for Charm School, but for the actual competition, I feel like you need to get a better handle on some drag essentials. I understand that money could be an issue, so I’m going to narrow it down to two very cheap things you need to buy: a better webcam, and a darker contour product. Firstly, this competition is heavily photo and video based, and it’s unfair to both you and every other competitor for me to compare these blurry photos to the others. This one (https://www.wish.com/c/562dc1605b47960fcb64c40d?hide_login_modal=true&from_ad=pla4&_display_country_code=US&gclid=CJPb8KXVmNICFZeFswodX1kKqw) is $5 with $3 shipping. Secondly, if you can buy just one makeup item, get a foundation stick in a darker color for your contour. I actually like the makeup you have on this week, but it’s not draggy enough for me. I think dark contours are what set drag makeup apart from regular makeup. NYX’s Stick Foundation in the color Cocoa (http://www.nyxcosmetics.com/mineral-stick-foundation/NYX_130.html) is $10. There are probably cheaper sticks at the drugstore or Target. These two combined should be around $20 at most, but that one-time spending will be worth it in the long run. I apologize if I’m being harsh. Maybe you’re only doing drag for yourself and you don’t really care about getting your name out there, which is great! But by auditioning for and being cast on TDR, you ARE getting your name out there, and you’re competing against many other queens who want to get their name out there, and it’s only fair that you give them a fair fight.
Judah Kiss - Daddie’s Avant Garde Concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey judges! So this week was a bit of trainwreck and a half for me. This is the first outfit I have ever made myself, but I am SOOO happy with it. I used a stretchy, dancewear fabric for the pants, and a satin for the blue shirt. The backpiece/spikes are made of a large picture frame I broke into uneven pieces and hot glued/velcroed to the look. The pants were my greatest focus in the look, and I could not be happier with them. The headpiece is a Styrofoam circle cut in half, and hot glued together with sheer fabric embellishments and a bow on top. It was held to the wig cap/stocking with an immeasurable amount of pins and a little bit of prayer. I was inspired by Daddie's design because it's extremely avant garde and club-kid, two things I always strive for my drag to be. I had to make some changes on the basis of available fabrics, and also changed the color scheme to match my tastes more. I interpreted the original concept by keeping most elements the same, and rearranging shapes to give the design flow, while maintaining a very striking, intimidating figure and look overall. I feel gorgeous, I feel scary, I feel mysterious, and I'm so happy that after three auditions, I have FINALLY conquered my first challenge in TDR!
Lila: It’s honestly hard to believe this is the first outfit that you made yourself in its entirety! The harem pants are soooooo good, and you’ve tailored the look to match your aesthetic while still holding some of the elements of design from Daddie’s concept. Really enjoy this colour scheming, while I wouldn’t have mind you using the original colours, I love this as I see the silhouette that Daddie designed rather than something utterly different. I am trying really hard to nitpick at this at the moment because it’s so good, maybe if you created more of an illusion with your makeup that your body is of that green colour, or if you painted the rest of your body black like you did your arms as gloves (nice touch,) it could really tie in the elements a lot better? Either way, great submission this week!
Gluttoni: Judah, you are betraying my best judgement by me pumping your already big head up but gurl.....you really slayed me this week. This level of work is phenomenal and you deserve nothing but praise for bringing my personal favorite design of them all to life. This being the first outfit you've ever made in full entirety is astonishing. You really took this challenge by the balls and then force fed it to us. My only overwhelming critique is the top half is a tad messy with the drawn on  baby hairs and kind of juxtaposed headpiece. I think with looks that have so much going on it's better to have one aspect of the look be as simple as possible. Otherwise this perfection and I'm happy you're here showing your drag to us because the community has been waiting quite a while to see your amazing potential. Keep up the good work.
Letha: Wow Judah, this is awesome! I see so much of Daddie’s concept in there. I am in love with the pants, they might be my favorite part of the whole outfit! I’m not as in love with the top, as it’s a bit big and you kind of get lost in it. Were it a little smaller and showed more midriff it would be more flattering to the figure, but the volume elements/spikes stay true to the concept. The head piece is sort of a jumble, but it’s very structured and sculptural so I appreciate that a lot. The makeup is verrry cool, I love some good swamp green, and the glitter on the new lid is stunning. I will say this for the overall color scheme. When compared to Daddie’s design, I feel that some of the vibrancy is lost by not having any “poppy” colors such as a yellow or a red, and while your final product is totally cohesive in its own right, it’s more of a “chill” color palette.
Toni:Bitch! As the only bitch who did pants this week, and with so much structure. I was impressed to stay the least. I love so much about this. ima start with your makeup because I’m glad you took the chance to show your signature Judah style, and it worked really well with this look, but don’t rely on it! I love how the outfit is shaped really because it gives me this street fashion club kid feel which is very you. I would work on stability because you did seem to ahve issue with that this week and it shows a bit in the picture but over all amazing!
Gii: Not gonna lie, I was really worried for you at first because Daddie’s design was definitely not the easiest to execute well. So honestly? I am really pleased with how you interpreted the look. If anyone could turn this design out it would be you. Admittedly it’s not a look I would wear personally, and without knowing the inspiration I might have clocked you for some details, but as I know the inspiration I think you did a pretty damn good job. The cutout harem pants were really the most fashionable way to execute the original, and I think sticking to this green and blue palette was smart. It made your look more cohesive while still being really bright and out there, staying true to the design. I’d probably want the shawl to drape a little better, and the sticks in the back to be a little more symmetrical, but I can see what you’re going for and I know you put the effort into constructing it, so it doesn’t bother me as much. I do have to admit I am not the biggest fan of the headpiece since it doesn’t really seem to relate to the rest of the outfit, but your makeup more than makes up for it! I’m so glad to see some glitter in this competition. I do wish your drawn bangs were a little more precise and sharp, though! Still, what a different queen from the girl in the Cycle 7 Fan Favorite poll! I’m so excited to see what you can do this cycle.
Klinker - Dotte Com’s Starry Concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got her concept  and changed the idea of "Galaxy" for "Hell" since that's my signature. I kept the body suit  with the boots and a belt. Did the skirt matching the  devil look and the head red as the skirt. My make is very inspired but the matching lips in the drawing and, instead of wearing glasses matching, I decided to paint it all. I'm serving Slut from Hell realness.
Lila: Hi Klinks! Let’s start off with the positives of this look; I love that you had the vision of interpreting it in a way that was way different. The colour swork well with eachother and it’s very you. Now, I’ve got to say that I’m a little let down, because we didn’t expect it to be interpreted in a way that changed the overall theme, rather in a way that stuck close to the original design, just altered in a way that makes the concept your own, with similar colour schemes. Your makeup is looking a little shiny with the black on your forehead to your eyes, make sure to use some translucent powder or black eyeshadow to set it. Overall, this was an okay submission.
Gluttoni: I think you're klinky and I like you a lot. My fellow devilish sista, I'm obsessed with this look but for all the wrong reasons. I like the concept you were grasping at but the execution leaves something to be desired. Dotte's design was brighter and a lot more grand while I think you making it darker way more streamline was probably not the best direction to go since the design itself was overly simplistic. I'm hoping we will see you in a wig at least a few times in the competition along with more dynamic makeup styling. The body is sickening and you definitely know that but please don't rest on that the entire time you are in this race because I can already tell you're passionate and forced to be reckoned with.
Letha: Heya Klinker! I do enjoy the look/design you came up with, and the colors/silhouette go with the theme you picked. But, sadly, that theme is not the concept you were given. TDR is about finding yourself, but there are also assignments that you should follow. If you had wanted to use the red you could have gone for some sort of nebula or galaxy design (like the Hubble telescope images, perhaps) but adding some sort of pattern or design, but “Hell” is just too different for me. The makeup makes a statement, but if it’s going to be so simple then it should be totally precise in execution (meaning no wobbly lines on the face paint). I do really enjoy the lips though, they’re quite good! Overall, I’m not mad at the submission, it’s a decent look, it doesn’t fit the challenge super well.
Toni: Hey babe! This is such an amazing! but the issue seems to be that other than a cape it doesn't look like dottes at all. I would have loved for you to have gone all out and really shot this one out of the park because dottes design could have been interpreted so many different ways but I don’t see “hell” as one of them. I think you have great makeup for this, i love the high fashion feel but I think it needed to be cleaned up a bit before taking picture. over all it was a great look but not what we were looking for.
Gii: I think this is a cute look, but I don’t see much resemblance to Dotte’s drawing :( The only thing I see that remotely calls to the design is the cape, which gives off superhero/villain vibes like the design. I was so looking forward to seeing you strut in white and gold, too! So unfortunately there isn’t much I can critique about this look, because it is really cute and well constructed, but I just don’t see how this was inspired by Dotte’s drawing. If you could have even incorporated some small details, such as the headband and the stars, while still sticking to the red and black color scheme, and I would have been fine with that. The makeup is decent as well, although a bit simple. It could be a bit more polished, as the lines seem a bit messy. If you’re going to do minimal makeup you want to spend a lot of time making it look clean and precise. Again, the makeup would have been a nice place to incorporate stars. So I don’t know if you decided to completely change the concept because you couldn’t find the materials or what, but in the future if you’re going to change concepts like this, I STRONGLY recommend messaging the judges privately and getting their advice first. This isn’t your regular Instagram drag race with minimal interaction between the cast. The judges are here to help you grow and they love helping people out, so please make the most of that! I’m still rooting for you, so do your best to get the judges’ advice so you make it to the top!
Lexi Lamour - Avana Noir’s Lolita Pink Concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next on Toonami: The new original anime, Cloud 9! In the galaxy of Cloud 9 there are 9 Nimbus Planets each consisting of nimbus of different colors. The inhabitants are called Nimbees. These alien creatures are born in their own personal Nimbus Cloud that become their familiars and their forms of transportation that grow as they grow, but once they reach the age of assention they grow wings so that they can be away from their Nimbus if needed. On the planet Pink Nimbus we meet our protagonist Princess Pinkasuki. Her father is not only the king of Pink Nimbus but the High King of the entire Cloud 9 galaxy! When the antagonists, the evil color snatchers, capture him it is up to Princess Pinkasuki to gather the princes and princesses from the other 8 planets in the Cloud 9 Galaxy and ban together to save him.....before the entire galaxy is left colorless. Hello, judges! I was assigned Avana's outfit and it's exactly what I wanted. I knew immediately what I was going to do. I stayed as true as I could to her original design while still making a concept of mine own and a character that would fit her look. I kept the pink color throughout and tried to incorporate various different Pink colors as to not be entirely monochromatic. Where the hair was concerned it felt pretty open to interpretation, so I styled a pink wig in an updo. The headpiece I kept to her original design and made out of paper, but added an extra little fabric bow to it. The upper body is made of a metallic pink material decorated with stones and the bow as she had in her picture. The wings are made out of paper, but I covered them in an ombré of pink feathers to give it something extra. The sleeves I kept and remained true to her design. Now the bottom is where I really took off and had fun. I did make her cotton skirt and spray painted it a light pink(the dark pink was too heavy and didn't make it feel Cloud like or fluffy). However.....I used it as the cloud for my character. I took a pair of pink tights, rhinestoned them, stuffed them to look like legs, and put hem in a pair of dark pink boots and tied them around my waist so that it looked like I was sitting on the cloud. The little skirt I made out of metallic pink fabric and decorated with rhinestones so that it looked like I was a dainty cute princess riding atop of her own personal Nimbus Cloud.
Lila: Who are you? This is I N C R E D I B L E. This is so damn impressive, and when Toni told me that you were going to do something of a cloud illusion I was expecting what you delivered. This matches the concept almost perfectly which I don’t mind, but for a first challenge? Incredible. Your makeup skills are impeccable and the pink is such a great choice with this concept, I’m just in awe of your contouring and highlight, because from first hand experience, its not easy to find the right colours of a colour-makeup. My nitpick would be that the wig isn’t doing it for me personally, it’s way too bright for this concept I think and if you used a more rosey pink than a neon, it could’ve worked a lot better? Besides that, great submission, mama!
Gluttoni: Lexi! This is super kawaii and everything I expected this design to bring and more. My favorite part is all the elements that go hand and hand with the mahou shoju (magical girls) aesthetic. I'm getting references of decora & lolita street fashions and I'm living for it. To be honest the fact that you got this accomplished this in less than four days blew me away. You told me before the competition that you were hungry for this title and without a doubt see that. Some slight changes I'd lack with this look are some of your blending techniques and shading. Your contour comes across as manly something a drag king would do per say. Round out your shapes on your face to really bring the female illusion. Besides that I have to give your props on a magnificent look. This look was definitely the most awe-inspiring look of the week.
Letha: Lexi, I’m gonna be honest with you. I’m shook. This look is so thoroughly realized and executed that I have very little to critique. The cloud with the shoes is adorable, with a touch a whimsy and the wings are very impressive. The sleeves are so cute and the dress itself is also well crafted. And those nails are EVERYTHING, whew! My main notes of critique would be that the pink makeup looks a touch severe with some harsh lines along the cheek bones, and that the silver brows get a touch lost in the shuffle of the face and could use more definition. The wig is also cute, but does look a touch Party City. But those are literally drops in the bucket when compared the the LOOK that you have created. Stunning work, Lexi, keep it up!
Toni: BITCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH my gay ass i cannot with this. This is everything to me, the pink, the cloud the way its so fun and campy as well as being so cute. I think its such a smart look to make and it reads so well. Theres a clear connection between this and the original design. I do wish there was  a bit more of coordination between the colors where it was 3 colors instead of 5 just to tie it all together. Your makeup looks so cute and I think it would be a bit better to darken those contours and really vamp it up an extra notch. I am so proud of you for turning this out so keep up the good work <3
Gii: LEXI. You’ve hit my weakness: metallic pink fluffy magical girl realness. There are a few things I’m going to nitpick but I can tell you put a ton of effort into this and the overall first impression is good! I legit thought you were sitting, I had no clue you were standing underneath that pedestal. However, I think there are a looooot of different things going on here...you have so many variants of pink metallic fabric, then the bow is one pattern and the wings are a totally different pattern. While I love each of those details individually, I can’t help but wish there was a little more cohesiveness to the look? Like, stick to one pattern (I’d say the fluffy wing one since it matches your pedestal), and if you’re going to use a different colored fabric on the sleeve, maybe include it somewhere on the dress as well so that they match. For the makeup, I am generally not a huge fan of coloring your skin, mainly because you put a lot of work into highlighting and contouring your face but then it contrasts a lot against the rest of your body which is not similarly contoured. I think the eyebrows didn’t show up very well either, though I love a glitter eyebrow! I think maybe if you outlined them faintly it would have improved the look a lot. Still, like I said, you worked hard this week and you really did a stellar job! Just work on outfit cohesiveness in future weeks!
Marcella Fox - Analyse Thropic’s Snake Concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Firstly, I just want to point out that, as a Ravenclaw, I felt extremely disloyal making this outfit :p I didn’t think Ana’s design really fitted with my style, so I wanted to change it significantly. Similar to what I did with Katya’s latex, I wanted to simplify this and take it out of costume territory. I decided to use an existing green dress, with scale-like sequins, and complimented it with snakey accessories made from cardboard that I meticulously decoupaged with snakeskin-printed giftwrap. I opted for silver instead of gold, to give a sleeker look that would match my simpler style. I refined the busy headpiece into something more abstract but still very serpentine, with the yellow eye to pop out and turned the original collar idea into an actual snake that wraps around my arm and peers over my shoulder. To compensate deviating so much from the drawing, I decided to add extra accessories, making matching earrings, a belt and shoe embellishments. The overall effect is less theatrical than the original design - it still reads mysterious snake lady, but it’s much fresher and a lot more Marcella!
Lila: Ugh, you make me so jealous with how beautiful your face is. You look like a little porcelain doll and it just makes me so envious of you. I love this, it fits what Analyse did, but you’ve got that little charm of Marcella on it, and it’s such a different look as we’re used to seeing you in, like you’re giving me antagonist at Epsom ready to sabotage some horse racing to win the bets you’ve placed, honestly! I wish there was a little bit more to it, however, like I do wish there was a hooded aspect or a cloak of some sort, even like whipping up a piece of fabric or a bedsheet as a cape could’ve turned you from evil henchwoman from Epsom into the woman who owns the evil corporation? Anyways, I loved this concept, good job Marcie!
Gluttoni: Miss Fox. I must say I'm quite the fan of your body of work beyond this competition. You have a clear vision of your character and above all else I sense a sincerity in everything you do. Those traits are what's going to skyrocket you in this competition as well as your attention to in-depth details. Your makeup is so soft and clean which I think personally takes more skills than something very overt. Although I can't find anything "wrong" with your paint there are still things that can be done to take you to the very next level. You are beautiful canvas but dare I say a tad blank canvas with plenty of room to branch out and try something more. You have the fresh face female illusion down but I'd personally love stronger contours on you and I think you have the bone structure/skill to carry it well. Try more shading along your jawline, cheeks and temples just to bring a tad more DRAMA to your face. The outfit was where I was underwhelmed because the dress was too simple for this challenge. The scale connection was great but I was left wishing the silhouette lended more the slickness of a snake. The metallic accents were fab and I'm placing my order for some as we speak. If you had brought that same creativity to the rest of the look I think this challenge could have been yours for the taking.
Letha: What’sssssssssss up, Marcella? I really enjoy this look, it echoes a lot of Analyse’s concept, which was the assignment, while still staying true to your own aesthetic. The reptilian elements are there and they make sense. I wish the fascinator was a bit larger though. The makeup is signature Marcella, and you look beautiful, but I do kind of want more in terms of color? While the red lip makes sense with the green of the dress (while still not seeming Christmas), I think some green and gold/silver on the eyes might have pushed the envelope a little further. Also, I was not exactly known for wearing nails on TDR, but I have since learned they can both make an impact and tie a look together, so I would recommend even a small set (perhaps painted gold for this look)? They even sell double sided adhesives if you don’t want to use glue. But besides those little things, you did a GREAT job this week, strong work!
Toni: Taylor swift its a joy! I really enjoy this, you took a super elegant and high fashion design and made it into a wearable real cocktail look. It’s giving me “super villain at a art gallery ball ready to steal all the art and be thanked for it. “ its very that. i love the head piece and the shoe pieces. All of your accessorizing was very smart and fun, i do wish they were a bit bigger though. Makeup wise you paint beautifully and quiet feminine I might add, but I do wish there was a bit more color in the eyes for this look because it really could have tied it all together. I know you were struggling on what to do with your hair and I think this was a really good choice because it adds a level of elegance to the look. Good luck this week!
Gii: I know you said you adjusted Analyse’s design to match your style, but I still found myself wishing for more resemblance between your look and her design. I feel like I’m looking at two separate snake-themed looks, rather than one inspired by the other. The simplest way to close the gap would be to incorporate more yellow and gold, ideally by replacing all the silver accessories with gold. I don’t remember seeing much silver in the original design, and since the main color scheme was green and yellow I was really looking forward to seeing you rock that palette. Aside from that, the look is very well made for sure. It fits you well and the accessorizing is flawless, I really love the texture of the belts and the shape of the fascinator. I think your hairline could be a tad lower but it’s not a huge deal to me and I like it as is. Your makeup is the perfect example of “fishy but still drag” to me, although I would have liked to see green, gold, or even silver eyeshadow as a pop of color. On its own I would say this is a flawless look, but for this challenge I just don’t know if I can say this fulfilled the assignment as well as I’d like it to! Even though you say your style is very simplistic, I feel like this was the best opportunity to show a more intricate side (versatility amirite) and make a really impressive first impression. I think you’re one of the stronger queens in the cast, so I know you can step your game up and I want to see that!
Paprika - Sugar Monroe’s Flower Concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I got assigned Sugar’s sketch, which was exciting because I thought hers was really cute. I tried to blend elements of the original sketch with my personal style, so I went with a slightly different dress shape. I bought dollar tree out of purple and blue flowers and did the skirt in a similar pattern to the sketch, and went for a different sort of neckline with the petals and leaves. The flowers on the eye were my own personal touch, because I’m extra and I like to stick shit to my face. I was taping and gluing and all that jazz pretty much all day and I honestly loved it, I haven’t made anything like this before and I think the final product is really cute and really me, while still close to the original design.
Lila: You are literally so adorable! Your makeup is extremely stunning and the blue is such a great pop with your white dress and flowers! I love the dress, although a little simple, your interpretation meets what Sugar originally created quite well. I wish that you had some gloves or accessories, because it seems a little bear in the legs and arm area. If you made the capelet, that could’ve helped eliminate that empty feeling perhaps. You could’ve used white socks and overlapped the shoes, because the red is really throwing the concept off! Overall, I do like this however, good job!
Gluttoni: Beside being my favorite pointless seasoning, you are honestly one of my biggest obsessions within this race. Something about your persona just pulls me in and makes me fall in love with the things that you do. You are so soft and innocent with this look literally a breath of fresh air. I think this look is just very safe as a whole. I worry you don't have the resources or courage to take the proper risk that will get you wins in this competition and I hope you prove me wrong in that statement because the potential is there without a doubt. The eye work is simple and clean with I'm totally into and the eye flower arrangement added some much needed flare to this overall look. I'm beyond eager to get to know you more and help you along the way.
Letha: Awwww Pappy, this is such a cute look! I definitely see Sugar’s original concept here, which is great! It’s toned down a bit, and I don’t mind the dress at all, but I do wish there was a bit more. Had you made a small cape (going to maybe just the waist) and trimmed the edges of that with flowers, it would have kicked it up a little bit. Some jewelry (even flower bracelets or maybe a crown) also would have been cute (nails don’t hurt either!). The red shoes add a pop of color that ends up being out of place with the rest of the look (I understand being limited on shoes, but even doing a cover on them made of flowers could have worked).  The hair is okay, but could use some more styling/volume. The flower eye is also a nice touch, but on the eye you did paint, I wish the crease was a little darker/more defined toward the new line you made. A bigger lash could also help it along! The lips are cute, I enjoy the shape you did with them. I would like perhaps a bit more blush, as the cheeks read a little flat. But overall, I think you did a good job adapting the look and you should be proud of it!
Toni: Okay so if sugars was the wedding gown yours is the matching flwoer girl outfit. i really like this, its a bit simple but for your first outfit this is verry nice and well done> i lovev the trimming you could have dotted a few flowers above it to add a bit more. I want you to start trying to shape your body a bit more as well as carve your face more because right now you look very 10 year old girl which is cute but if you shaped your body and contoured it could be sicking 16 year old diva bitch. Good luck next week dear <3
Gii: GOD flower eyepatches are my weakness. I have to admit I was a little worried for you because I didn’t know what resources you had, but this turned out really nicely! Your choice of flowers was perfect, and the dress fits you really well. The little design on your chest with the flowers and leaves was artfully done and I think that was a perfect touch. I think the wig could have been brushed out a tad so it looked a little less narrow, and I would have liked to see a bit more pink just because I’m a sucker for pink/blue/purple florals. I do think this was a bit of a safe look (but like, good safe) and there were some details you could have added to make this into more of a high look. The easy road would have been to find some matching jewelry and maybe something as a headpiece -- accessorizing is really what makes a look polished! The more challenging road would have been to add even more flowers, so instead of lining the hem maybe they’re sort of all over the bottom of the dress similar to Sugar’s design. Ideally you could do both haha but given that most queens only have the weekend to work on their looks, good job!
Phoebe St. Jefferson - Giraffez Doris Buckel’s Rainbow Concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey Judges :* This week I got my inspiration from the one the only icon legend herself Giraffez! The drawing I got featured a cute mermaid cut pride dress, and so I decided to take the inspiration of rainbows to create a look fit for my TDR debut! I have a girly white dress, where I attatched felt strips to make a rainbow going all the way around. Then I took a jacket and hot glued cotton balls on it to make clouds. For my head, I fabricated a rainbow headpiece, and I wore my white wig to make it look like the rainbow was shooting out of a cloud. Giraffez also gave me a cute picture of what she wanted her make up to look like on the drawing, so I decided it would make a fun mask to wear on the runway. Woooooooooo
Lila: Girl, you and your poses always have me cracking up, it’s like you’re in The Office doing somehting mischevious and then the camera just pans to you, I love it! Your outfit is so damn cute, it works well with what Giraffez gave you and that coat, jesus that coat, I can’t believe you had the perseverance to sit and hot glue all those cotton balls to a coat. For me, I wish your hair was a little bigger, if you rat tailed and hair spray that beautiful white lace front into a cloud shape, it could’ve added an amazing element to your concept. Overall, this is a good submission, Phoebs!
Gluttoni: Phoebe! PHOEBE! I'm so delighted the community gets to see your gorgeous smile and bambi eyes again in the tag. Not making it on cycles past has suited you well because look how far you've grown as a queen! Giraffez gave you a hard ball assignment this week because you were in danger of either being to simple or too tacky and I have to give it to you and say you attacked this like a fucking pro. This is definitely one of my favorites just because of your keen eye for detail. The cloud coat is EVERYTHING (a little crafty looking) but everything nonetheless . My favorite part is a choice on your part the understand fashion and proportions to make the rainbow more tangible and provide the proper negative space to make it figuratively and literally shine. This is something I would totally imagine you wearing to a show of your own someday because above all else it shows your personality. I will warn you though I need to see some more advanced makeup skills but I only say that because I trust that you can do so. Good job my love. P.S The mask murdered me!
Letha: This look is as adorable as you are, Phoebe! You look like you should be doing the weather for a really gay news station, and I love that. The clouds and the rainbow translated well to your creation, but I do feel like the headpiece is a touch lackluster. I like the white wig, but would have preferred you to inject it with some volume by doing some backcombing. The makeup is okay, but I would have liked to have see more color. The red lip pops a lot, but the rainbow you tried to do on the eye comes across as a little muddy/muted. I would suggest a white base like Nyx Jumbo Eye Pencil in Milk to help those colors pop more. Some white brows, or even rainbow ones, would also have been really cool! All in all, this is a solid submission Phoebe, good job!
Toni: Hey bitch!! I love this, i think it its very you and I like this a lot more than the original design. I think the jacket makes it cute and summery and fun and the head pieces turns it into a look rather than just a dress. I want to see your lips lined a bit more next time and your eyes a bit more blended. I also want to start seeing more conceptual things form you.I love a good white wig I just wish you had brushed this one out a bit more so it has more volume and looks a bit less stringy and more cloud like. Over all I really enjoyed this.
Gii: I’m a sucker for rainbow-themed looks, so I knew I was immediately going to like anything you did! I love the dress but I especially love the cloud-themed jacket as your main accessory, it is really what sold this look for me. I do wish it was a bit puffier -- you could pull apart those cotton balls to make them really fluffy and poofy and I bet that would have looked super cute. Without doing that though, I think I would have preferred a bolero-style jacket -- basically a jacket that doesn’t end at the waist, but a little below the bust. It’s usually a little hard to find those types of jackets though, so I understand. The wig definitely needs some styling -- a side part, at the very least. A center hair part is usually not flattering unless you’re styling it into an updo! And while I appreciate that you wanted the headpiece to match the rainbows on the dress, I think you could have utilized the rainbow theme in a more fashionable headpiece. I’m also not sure how to feel about the makeup too much. I think the bottom lashes age you a little bit, though I commend you on the effort of even putting in big draggy lashes. But since you are going for big draggy lashes, you gotta remember to draw your liner and crease even higher so they don’t get hidden! The eyeshadows are a little faint as well, I would recommend patting them on. It takes longer than just sweeping with a brush, but it’s the best way to guarantee maximum pigmentation. Overall I think this may be somewhat safe for my taste, but it is still a very good safe!
Sugar Monroe - Klinker’s CD Concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey judges! Today I have for you a cascade of broken CD realness. In the original design, the CDs were purple, but I couldn’t find any so I just used the silver iridescent ones and paired it with a black mesh top because black and silver go really good together. The materials I used were: broken CDs, some thick gauge clear vinyl for the skirt, and a black mesh body suit. Oh! And superglue. Lots of superglue. Haha anywho, I hope you guys enjoy this look as much as I enjoyed making it. Stay Sweet!
Lila: Sugar Monroe, I am in love with this design. Your colour scheme works well with Klinker’s CD concept and you’ve made it work for you. I’m in love with this sheer bodysuit and solid bra combination, and your acrylic CD skirt is amazing. Now girl, I hope the next challenge you do I see some nails! and my wish is that I wanted a little headpiece or CD necklace or earrings, just something to tighten the look around your head area I think would’ve helped a lot. Overall, good submission this week, Shugs!
Gluttoni: Sugar, my sweet! I'm so happy to be in your presence again. You were a fierce competitor then as you are now. I'm glad you are back with a new and improved attitude and what seems to be a revamped style. It's something both I expect from you as well as just enough of something new to make me want to see more of what you can do. I have a personal problem with the brow shape. The front is too messy for my liking and the shape I think doesn't suit you well but I have to say you've stepped up you brow coverage tenfold. The outfit was just a little under designed for my taste but it's so simple and flattering that it works but please do rest on your habit of top and circle skirt this time around. I'm seeing you grow before my eyes just be sure your progression is steady and key word for you is consistent.
Letha: I love the colors here, Sugar! It differs somewhat from Klinker’s design but still reads with the CDs. I love what you did with the skirt, I just wish there was more to the look! Compared to the bottom half, the top is a little meh, even though it is cute. Using more CDs in other areas would have helped it along, either as accessories or as appliqués on the top, but the necklace is quite pretty. The hair is cute, and honestly could have been left as is if there was a cute little headpiece on top (it’s a little plain by itself though). The makeup is getting better all the time, and I love the lip combo you made, just work on cleaning up your lip lines (use lip brush your lipstick for sharp lines or clean up the edges with a concealer/foundation, or both). Also, how u gonna take a face pic with a hand on your chest and not have a nail on???? I know from experience that it can be a bitch to do things like filming with nails on, but they really do complete a look. Still, the look is a cute one, good job!
Toni:Hey sugar, you’ve been through this, you;re back, you’re my sister so ima keep it 100 with you. You’ve grown so much since c8 and ive loved watching ti and every time you perform I can tell you’re getting better and better so i really want to see you PUSH YOURSELF on c9, and this my dear isn’t doing that for me. It’s a bit simple and a step down from kilnkers design I think you could have added more cd’s to the time as well as made some cool designs that would have really made this a stunner. You’re makeup is really nice and I love this wig but it is your standard shape so i would like to see something new from you. Over all though I’m glad to see you’re improving.
Gii: Welcome back! I get to judge you again. To be honest, I thought you were undeservedly in the bottom too many times last cycle, so I’m really glad you get this second chance to redeem yourself. The look is a bit pedestrian, but I can still see so much growth from last cycle. It fits you decently, your paint is flawless, and you hold yourself with a little more confidence. I do wish the skirt was just a bit higher since right now it’s not at the most flattering level -- check out high-waisted skirts for relevance, when worn correctly they are so good looking on body types like yours! I really love the CD shards too, so much that part of me wishes there was even more -- a headpiece or jewelry or something on the top half to match the bottom half! Your makeup has gotten so much nicer as well. I think you could stand to make your lips larger and rounder, and I probably would make your eyebrows a little more square and less droopy near the inner corners. The hair is a bit flat on you as well and I think you could have fluffed it up to give it some volume! Voluminous hair will help a lot with exaggerating your proportions for drag. But amid all this nitpicking, seriously, I’m looking forward to seeing much more from you this cycle! Though the look could be touched up a tad, I don’t think you’ll be in the bottom this week.

i come with knives - iamx
I always feel like this song was playing when he first became General, this is just such a fitting song for his rise to power. Every time I hear it I picture him making the speech before using Starkiller Base for the first time.
It was kinda hard to pick between this, Don’t Mess With Me by Temposhark or Volatile Times also by IAMX.
Kinder und sterne küssen und verlieren sich Greifen leise meine hand und führen mich Die traumgötter brachten mich in eine landschaft Schmetterlinge flatterten durch meine seele
The paradox or our minds Too much to believe, too much to deny You fool me again to quiet my pride But I’m a human, I come with knives
I never promised you an open heart or charity I never wanted to abuse your imagination
I come with knives I come with knives And agony To love you
Kinder und sterne küssen und verlieren sich Greifen leise meine hand und führen mich Die traumgötter brachten mich in eine landschaft Schmetterlinge flatterten durch meine seele In der mitternacht.
The monotony And the rising tide Is under my skin, is crawling inside Adrenaline to rewire my mind I'm only human, I come with knives
I never promised you an open heart or charity I never wanted to abuse your imagination
I come with knives I come with knives And agony I come with knives I come with knives To love you And agony To love you With agony

“Don’t call her ‘doll face’. Moron.”
The students were all making their way into the stadium as Marianne finished the set up for the first aid tent. The crowd was already screaming in excitement. The air was filled with carnival food smells and the taste of salt.
Marianne knew the reason for the latter. She’d gotten used to it since childhood.
A lot had changed since childhood. She’d loved. She’d lost. And she learned to treat herself with some level of self-respect. It felt nice being able to look at herself in the mirror and enjoy wearing her favorite color. Without hearing those degrading comments from others around her about it.
She was happier now.
“Hey doll face! Remember me?”
Oh god no. Please no.
“Yoo-hoo! Mither! Over here!”
Marianne bit back a groan and turned around, putting on her best smile. “Barrett Ballard. How nice to see you again.”
“Oh, it’s been so long, doll face.” A man with long greying hair and dull blue eyes skipped over to her, his baggy suit making his lanky form even more elongated with every movement. “How have you been? I haven’t heard from you since-”
Marianne braced herself. She knew it was coming. She was wearing a red blouse with black pair of jeans and her doctor’s coat. She looked professional. She looked mature and confident.
“What on earth are you doing wearing that?”
She felt like a sitting duck.
                                                           -
“Mommy, look! Look!”
It was a lovely summer evening. Marianne was wearing her favorite red dress as they walked down the beach. She’d gotten a cut on her foot from one of the rocks near the good shell gathering spot. But before she could truly cry over it, a light wind surrounded her. Salty water covered her body and seeped into the wound. It healed up quickly, clearing away the blood from the injury. It left no scar.
Murdina smiled, lifting her up onto her shoulders as the others caught up to them. “Looks like your quirk manifested! I’m so glad!”
Dafyd smiled, gently pushing up his read headband as wee Regi kept tugging it down. “What happened?”
“I got a boo boo!” Marianne giggled, raising her foot up to show where it had once been. “And I healed it! I got covered in water and the owie disappeared!”
Regi’s eyes went wide and he gasped. “Boo boo?” His tiny hands reached out and he grabbed hold of Marianne’s foot, giving the heel a light kiss. “Boo boo gone!”
Murdina and Dafyd chuckled, giving Regi kisses on the cheek and telling him good job. Marianne couldn’t help smiling. Reginald had been a relatively quiet baby. Barely made eye contact with anyone. She was so scared at some points that maybe he didn’t like her.
But those fears were gone now.
“Thank you, Regi,” she said. “I feel much better now.”
Regi smiled brightly. “Boo boo gone!”
“Yep! Boo boo gone!”
Regi nodded, looking between all of them. His smile slowly began to leave. “Oh...”
“What’s wrong.”
“Want red.” He pointed to Dafyd’s headband, then to Murdina’s top and Marianne’s dress. “Where my red?”
Marianne looked over her brother, feeling her heart break as she saw not a single speck of the color on his little sailor outfit. She looked at her dress and reached for the hem of the skirt, taking off one of the ribbons that were tied through the holes. She motioned for her mother to move her closer and she leaned over, gently tying back Regi’s laughably long hair.
“There,” she said. “Now we all got red.”
Regi giggled and started bouncing in his father’s arms excitedly. “Got red! Got red!”
“That you do,” Dafyd chuckled. “It looks good on you both.”
Marianne couldn’t agree more.
                                                          -
“Marianne, we’ve been over this. Red isn’t a good color on you.”
Marianne let out a sigh, hanging up the beautiful party dress she’d set her sights on. It was a simple 50′s style rockabilly swing dress, with a fitted corset top and it flared out in the skirt. It was red, with adorable polka dot trimmings. It looked amazing.
She wanted that dress so badly.
But Mary was her roomie, and the designated fashion expert. Marianne had barely known the difference between different button ups before letting her come along clothes shopping. Her wardrobe was a little darker than she liked, but it looked nice and that was what was important right now. Especially for such an important event.
As per usual, Lucienne’s always held socials in between trainings and lessons and the like. It was a chance to form connections and build a network for hero duties. And as such, they were expected to dress nicely.
‘Nicely’ in Mary’s eyes meant Marianne would be in another navy blue dress that didn’t even make it to her knees, while she herself would wear whatever dress she thought looked best that week.
This week, it meant a red dress that would make her look like the only girl in the whole room.
Not just a red dress. THE red dress. The one she wanted so desperately.
“Why can’t we both wear red tonight?” Marianne asked. “It’s not like there’s a law saying I shouldn’t wear it.”
“It makes you look pasty and washed out,” Mary grumbled. “Now go try on this one. It’s a beautiful blue. It’ll look amazing, trust me.”
“But-”
“Go on!”
Marianne rolled her eyes and went into the changing room. She closed her eyes, counted to ten, and braced herself for the image of Mary in her dress.
Maybe I can sneak myself one later. Just to wear in private. No, Mary would take it...dammit...
With a sigh of regret, she put on the dress and left the dressing room, feeling a sharp pain in her chest as she saw Mary spinning around in the polka dots. Marianne decided to let it go.
It looks more amazing on her.
                                                                -
“Finally! I’ve been trying to get in to see you for weeks.”
“Well, I finally had the time.” Barrett said. “Now, let’s get to work, shall we? Have a seat.”
Marianne sat at the desk, reaching into her bag and pulling out the latest designs for her new hero costume. “So I had some ideas-”
Barrett raised his hand, shaking his head disapprovingly. “Now now, Marianne. You and I have been over this. You have a quirk with particular needs. And a particular style that comes with it.”
“But Mr. Ballard, please,” she insisted. “I promise, this is a good design. See, I was thinking we could go with something more streamlined. Have it look a bit more sinister yet soothing? And maybe in red?”
“But red makes you look so pale, darling.” He reached over and took her notebook, tossing it aside. “Now, if you’ll just wait a moment, my secretary will be here soon and will have you in the new suit any-Ah! Here it is!”
Before Marianne had a chance to recover she was hoisted from her seat and spun around midair. She could barely register what was happening. She felt her clothes vanishing, replaced with a soft, if slightly itchy fabric. She landed on her feet and was shoved in front of a mirror.
The hero suit had a new utility belt, with matching boots and a strap that went over her shoulders to carry more pouches. Unlike her last one, this was completely sleeveless, with a zipper down the front. The skirt that would attach to the belt had now become one with the top, and the colors were darker. A deep navy blue with a mauve outline. And of course, the golden circlet came with it.
It was almost too simple. Too much like her old outfit.
She hated it.
She was hoping for red.
“Well?” Barrett asked expectantly. “What do you think?”
“It’s...wonderful,” she said. “It’s just taking me a minute to adjust.”
“Well then, how about I leave you alone for a bit to get acquainted, eh doll face?”
Marianne watched him and the secretary go, waiting until the door was shut and she was certain that he was gone before hurrying over to her notebook, picking it up and hugging it tightly. The page it was open to was to a full body suit, a dark red with white lines that gave her an almost fallen angel aesthetic. It had boots that went to the knee and not the ankle, where they wouldn’t pinch at her nerves as badly. This also came with gloves, and was made with material better suited for the ocean. Almost like a wetsuit of sorts. And instead of a circlet, she’d get a pair of goggles that could double as a crown.
It was probably her best design yet.
And she’d never get to use it.
                                                          -
She couldn’t stop staring at it.
Her first birthday with Myko. She’d expected just about everything he threw at her. A nice dinner, a night on the town, karaoke, the hotel. Typical Mykolas.
She didn’t expect this red dress.
“What do you think?” he asked. “I hope you don’t mind but I asked your buddies L and Phoenix for help? They said you’d look really nice in this and- Marianne?”
She put it back in the box, biting her tongue as she held back the tears. This was a joke. A cruel, sick joke. It had to be. She couldn’t be receiving this dress. This lovely, red lace dress with a little black belt. She just couldn’t. It was so beautiful. Too beautiful.
“Marianne, hey,” Myko said softly, pulling her into his arms. “What’s wrong? Did I get the wrong one? Is this not the kind you like? Or did I get the wrong size-?”
“Why?” she whispered. “Why red?”
He looked at her, perplexed. “You said it was your favorite color. And it’s a lovely shade. I made sure it would look nice with your favorite necklace-”
He can’t be this dense. “Red makes me look washed out...”
“Oh, now that’s bullshit.” He gently pulled her to her feet, walking her to the mirror and holding the dress up in front of her. “Look at this. Look how your hair pairs well with the belt. How the way the sleeves will meet your elbows. The color makes the purple of your eyes pop so beautifully.” He kissed her on the cheek. “Marianne, you were born to wear red.”
The tears broke at the words. Marianne sank to her knees, hugging the dress as close as she could. Every comment about her and the color swirled in her mind, blocking out every other sound in the world. She could feel Myko drop down and pull her close, holding her as tightly as he could while she wept.
It’d been so long since she was told she looked good in red.
“Thank you,” she finally managed. “I love it. I love you.”
Myko smiled, gently drying the tears away. “I love you too.”
                                                                   -
“Clem, sweetheart. Please don’t tug on Mr. Kan’s hair.”
“It’s alright. He ain’t hurting none. You focus on getting ready.”
Marianne smiled softly, watching her son tug tightly on the tufts of white hair. She was glad the two seemed to get along. It was her first day back at work, and she needed all the help she could get. It was lonely without Mykolas, but Sekijiro was a very comforting presence in the dorms. She knew she could count on him when L and the others were away.
Quickly, she threw on a pair of black capri pants and a white button up. It wasn’t much, but it would be enough. She just had to get through today.
Today was her first solo outing as the school nurse. She could handle it. Marianne had been through so much already. There was no way in hell anything could throw her off.
No, she thought. There is one way.
“How do I look?” she asked.
Kan looked at her, making sure to keep his hands on the wiggly crawly baby trying to sit on his head. “You look good.”
“Just good?”
He shrugged. “I mean...You could do with some color.” He stood, carefully taking Clement and holding him close to his chest as he hurried to the closet. “Maybe try something nice? Lull the students into a false sense of security. Make them think you won’t beat them over the head with health lessons.” Kan smiled and pulled out a dress. It was one of those simple skater dresses. The kind that paired well with a pair of flats and a set of leggings. “Like this.”
Marianne felt her ears burn as she took it from his hands, smiling sweetly. “I’ll give it a try...If you think it’ll look good.”
“It’ll look lovely.” He leaned down slightly, kissing her on the cheek. “You look good in red. Now hurry up and get going. You don’t want to be late.” He looked at Clem, giving him a light boop on the nose to make him giggle. “We’ll meet you for lunch. Promise.”
“Okay.” She quickly made the change before passing him the baby bag, kissing them both on the cheek. “I’ll see you later then. Love you.”
“Love you too,” Kan said.
Marianne smiled and hurried out the door. It wasn’t until she got to her office she realized.
What the hell did we do? What the hell did I just say?!
They kissed each other on the cheek.
They said ‘I love you’.
Oh god, she thought. It really got that serious.
Somehow, she found she didn’t mind.
                                                             -
“It’s my favorite shirt, Ballard. Got a problem?”
Marianne watched him stammer in a vain attempt to find his words. She expected this. Barrett hadn’t been the same since she quit using him as her support designer. Almost too anxious to be healthy. But it was a choice she knew that, presented with the chance, she’d make the same decision.
“I mean,” he stumbled. “You look a little pale, doll face.”
“Don’t call her ‘doll face’. Moron.”
Barrett froze, slowly turning around to come face to face with Vlad King, who was glaring at him harshly from behind his visor. Marianne tried hard to hold back a laugh. There had only been one other person who could instill that kind of fear into that pathetic little man.
“C-can I help you?” Barrett asked.
“Yes,” Vlad growled. “You can get the fuck out of here before I call security.”
Barrett nodded rapidly. “I’ll be gone soon, promise. I just wanted to ask Mither if she’d be willing to come back to Elspie to help me with-”
She didn’t even let him finish. “No way.”
Both men looked at her in surprise. “No?”
“No,” Marianne repeated. “I have work here. A loving husband here. Another husband in the hospital. Two kids of my own plus an ultra heckton more. Even if I weren’t blacklisted to hell and back in the U.K circuit I wouldn’t come back.” She turned Barrett around and started pushing him out of the tent. “Now get lost before I ask Lady Lazarus to escort you to Mr. Allard.
Barret’s eyes went wide and white. “Allard? H-he’s here?”
“Yep. Now scram.”
With a high pitched squeak, the support designer bolted out of there. Vlad watched him go, a bemused smirk on his face.
“Who knew such a guy could move that fast?”
“I did.” She walked up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist as tightly as she could. “I’m sorry about earlier. All the yelling and shit. I was out of line.”
Vlad smiled, turning around and lifting her up into his arms, giving her a kiss on the nose. “It’s alright. I was the idiot who listened to Nezu and did shit behind your back. Can you forgive me?”
“Only if we can watch Princess Bride and pop some popcorn tonight.”
“Deal.”
Marianne smiled, nuzzling him before letting herself be set down. Vlad slipped her one last kiss and headed back to the students. As he went, Marianne’s hands traced along the hem of her shirt as she focused on his costume.
Red was still her favorite color.

How to Wear Gym Clothes to Fancy Places: 4 Outfit Ideas
I
n a not-so-past life, my waking moments were almost entirely punctuated by plyometric pushups and tuck jumps, backbends and pretzel poses of yoga, and isolated polyrhythmic gyrations in African dance class. I lived a life synonymous with activity, a “somatic practitioner,” as pronounced by my first yoga and dance teacher, Anna Leo. But all of that changed when I moved to New York.
The opportunity cost of my tumultuous transition from Atlanta to New York was that, between bouts of sleeping on the sofas of friends and “rooming” with my octogenarian uncle while I put together the pieces of the new life puzzle, downward dog became more like sleeping dog. My athletic routine fell by the wayside so much so that one day I woke up 30 pounds heavier, with a noticeably rounder face and even more domed quads.
And while I suffer no shame at any iteration of my flesh and bones, the changes in my body heralded to me a certain dissipation of my former self’s physical discipline, a discipline that I recalled seeped into other aspects of my being, a certain physical empowerment that bolstered my sense of mental limitlessness as though threading connective tissue in the mind-body. This feeling! It was this feeling that I missed more so than being able to fit into my skirts of yore. And now, having found a semblance of stability in other aspects of my new life, I knew it was time for me to afford myself the luxury of working out (and the necessity of a well-trained mind) again.
And make no mistake, in a city like New York, where fitness classes usually set you back about $40 dollars a session, staying active can be a luxury. (Yes, running outside and dancing to Angélique Kidjo in my birthday suit are free, but I like to mix in group fitness for a multiplicity of reasons.) Besides the fiscal deterrent, there was one other hurdle to overcome: inertia. How does one suddenly disrupt a cycle of lassitude when, even though the mind is willing, the flesh is, in accordance with the laws of physics, simply too weak to break the current state of inactivity? I found two ways.
The first was finding someone to answer to. After I put out an SOS, a friend introduced me to Jahkeen Washington, certified personal trainer and co-founder of Harlem High Intensity Fitness (HIIT) studio JTW FIT. Jah shifted from a nine-year career in the finance industry to become a certified personal trainer after losing a friend to a heart condition. Dedicated to bringing affordable fitness to the Harlem community, his studio offers classes as low as $15 dollars a class. As I find immeasurable value in being able to turn off my brain, so to speak, and have a professional craft an effective routine for me, I reached out to Jah. I knew my partnership with him was the right move from the moment I met him and experienced his easy air of confidence, deep devotion to his cause and a sense of humor that matched mine to a T.
So with that box ticked, the second inertia-busting strategy is why I come to you today on this rather prolix journey: apparel! When I realized that my workout wardrobe had not been updated in some seven or so years, I found myself scouring the web for what was new and exciting in the athletic wear market. All I had to do was perform one search and then sit back and let the oracular algorithms of the internet speak to me. And speak to me they did when an ad for a two-toned unitard flew into my field of vision. I immediately texted my friend Grant. “Need this!” I wrote, not realizing how expensive it was. “This Athluxury, Sis!” he replied. And so the term was born (at least in our little corner of the world; little did we know it was brewing in the Nike-verse as well) and its afterbirth was the idea for this story.
Sticker shock aside, I have always felt strongly about investing in my active gear (which probably explains why seven years on, the same cycling shorts are still making the rounds in my closet): Why shouldn’t the clothes I spend hours shaping my body in aspire as much to form as they do to function? Why should I not search for the same beauty I do in other aspects of my life, in the suits in which I will sweat as I attempt to shape the inner beauty of determination and self-discipline? “Wilt thou deny me the sheer joy of expanding my Spandex repertoire?” I asked my shoulder angel (or devil, depending on one’s vantage point). “I didn’t think so!” I scoffed, quieting and the supernatural being perched atop my medial deltoid.
To my imagination, Athluxury is the kind of athletic gear that espouses a thoughtfulness in design and brand ethos. And, yes, since luxury is a function of time, and time, they say, is money, the pieces I found in my “research” often came with a price tag to match. But they also came with an understanding that they were built to last. And while it is sacrilegious in my personal religion to wear more than 10% Spandex outside the church of the gym, if am spending this much money on athletic wear, I require the clothes to do a few extra things, including water my Meyer lemon tree monthly, take my future Jack Russell Terrier out for walks (twice a day, please) and not least of all, be able to hold their own when styled for everyday life. So here you have it, four Athluxury brands that rekindle my commitment to the active life every time I put them on, also styled for life beyond the sweat.
Ernest Leoty:
A gateway drug, if you will, this cerise and aubergine bodysuit by French startup brand Ernest Leoty was my first foray into the Athluxury world. The brand, which takes its name from a legendary French corset maker who invented the first modern corset in the 1800s, is designed in a sensibility très Parisien. Employing traditional French tailoring and technical activewear seaming, its high performance fabrics are sourced from Italian mills, and take my word for it, these details are apparent from the moment one slips on one of their butter-soft sheaths. Truly a second skin, Ernest Leoty felt like a natural choice for returning to the dance studio where the suppleness of their offerings meant melting, unencumbered, into the movement itself. For life outside the studio, the palette of the bodysuit led me to pair it with a magenta vintage kimono sourced for Harajuku for me by my personal shopper (just kidding, I can’t afford a personal shopper, but I do take advantage of my dear friend, @junebugshpr, a lawyer who moonlights as one). In the folly of my youth, many moons ago, I spent an entire paycheck on the Dior heels you see here, and as for the Tara Jarmon belt, it is my styling “golux” (aka mythical creature that comes to the rescue in all times of need).
VAARA
The entirety of British brand VAARA’s offerings exist in simple yet striking color dualities. Wrought from thick stretch fabric with a swimwear-like smoothness in quality, I found this brand offered a nice intersection between strong support and flexibility for the demands of HIIT training. The unofficial general consensus in the training world is that the Nike Metcon 4, seen here in white, is THE training shoe. You will find no objections on my part. The light blue of the stripe of these leggings is picked up almost exactly in the varying sized polka dots of this wrap-dress-worn-as-a-top from Second Sight. I find a nice interplay between the linearity of the stripe and the circular Kusamaësque dots of the dress. And to finish off the look, I added another pair of “investment” shoes, a well-aged pair of Nicholas Kirkwoods from my closet.
Outdoor Voices
Outdoor Voices is no longer a secret by any stretch of the imagination, and the brand’s popularity is well merited. Its mission statement is to foster people “doing things,” and I appreciate this uncomplicated, sensible approach to the active life. Their design team stems from both fitness and fashion realms so there’s as high an emphasis on aesthetic as there is on performance. Easily recognizable for their color-blocked, mutli-seamed styles, I was pleasantly surprised to find this solid, sanguine color among their offerings, which I tested out for running along with Nike’s Air Zoom Pegasus 35. The real MVP though is this OV men’s sweatshirt, rendered in a knit so cloud-soft I did not wish to ever take it off. Ever the fan of mixing unexpected fabrics, I paired the sweatshirt with an elaborate sequined dress from Erdem (worn as a skirt) and even more scintillation is brought to the mix by the Sophia Webster heels.
No Ka Oi’
According to its website, No Ka Oi’ means “the best” in Hawaiian, but the yoga-focused brand is actually made in Bologna, Italy. Strong color, eclectic fabrics and a plenitude of geometric design is the brand’s calling card. I was all too excited to roll up and strap tight this textured mat from the brand. While I’ve owned the leather mat strap here for about eight years, it has never come in handier than here in New York, where mat rental fees at studios are a real thing and schlepping a mat to class is about more than posturing. The vegetable-tanned leather strap is fashioned by Andrew McTeer who makes everything in his Queens studio, always aiming at as little waste as possible. He based the design of the strap on an antique example he found in France, adapting it for usability.
McTeer’s work, to me, is a paragon of the essence of luxury: While it may (or may not) be reflected in price point, luxury’s real signifier is that it is a labor of love, that thoughtfulness in design is equally reflected in the ethical production. The beauty of the resulting product is then but a little bonus with a great impact. After all, as professor and novelist Muriel Barbery asked, “Where is beauty to be found? In great things that, like everything else, are doomed to die, or in small things that inspire nothing, yet know how to set a jewel of infinity in a single moment?” Finding my way back into the luxury of the gym or dance studio may be a small victory, but no price tag can be placed on how boundless the active life makes me feel.

The Best Oscars Red Carpet Looks Were All a Little Funky
Even though awards show red carpets aren’t typically a showcase for the kind of fashion that moves the needle vis-a-vis personal style, I still love them deeply and look forward to seeing what people wear. Perhaps it’s precisely because the stakes are low that I have an especially keen appreciation for the guests who dare to wear their personalities on their sleeves.
I can understand why doing so would take courage: Choosing something out of the ordinary and maybe a little weird over something expected or flattering leaves you more vulnerable to criticism. But I like to imagine the satisfaction of wearing exactly what you want and therefore being the exact version of yourself you want to be is worth a thousand raised eyebrows.
I asked 10 Man Repeller editors and contributors to share their favorite looks of last night’s Oscars red carpet, and frankly, I couldn’t have handpicked the results better myself. The below list is a new and improved version of “best dressed,” in which the definition of that phrase goes beyond aesthetically pleasing and encompasses a characteristic that is arguably far more important: authenticity.
Whoopi Goldberg in Christian Siriano (Photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImage)
Who picked this look? Harling Ross (me!), Fashion Editor
Why was it your favorite? I’m a sucker for any red carpet looks that involve sunglasses, but more than that, I love how clear it is that Whoopi had fun getting dressed. From the wide belt to the floral print reminiscent of a Mardi Gras king cake, her outfit is delightfully different and doesn’t play by any rules except those of her own making.
Lupita Nyong’o in Versace (Photo by VALERIE MACON/AFP/Getty Images)
Who picked this look? Yaminah Mayo, freelance writer and Man Repeller contributor
Why was it your favorite? Lupita Nyong’o’s Versace look brought Wakanda vibes to the United States, and more importantly, to the Oscars. Not only that, but the details were incredible, from the crown-like gold thread woven through her hair to her dress’s asymmetric silhouette and unusual texture. It was a bold look, but if anyone could pull it off, it’s Nakia…sorry, I mean Lupita!
Saoirse Ronan in Calvin Klein (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
Who picked this look? Haley Nahman, Digital Editor
Why was it your favorite? I generally prefer plain, structural clothing over slinky, flowy clothing, so perhaps this choice isn’t a surprising one for me. That said, I initially wrote off Saoirse’s dress due to my millennial pink fatigue. It wasn’t until the camera zoomed out and I noticed the awkward crop of the hem that I “ooohed” through a mouthful of jelly beans. I also found her look to be almost caricaturesque in its femininity (baby pink, long train, big-ass bow, cherubic cheeks) and yet managed to circumvent the more cliché red carpet signifiers of that (plunging neckline, corseted waist, high slit, fake eyelashes). It felt sort of pleasantly ironic in that ways, and seemed to suit her.
Timothée Chalamet in Berluti (Photo by MACON/AFP/Getty Images)
Who picked this look? Juliana Salazar, freelance consultant, brand strategist and Man Repeller contributor
Why was it your favorite? I read an interview a few weeks ago in which Timothée Chalamet told Frank Ocean he doesn’t work with a stylist, so when he showed up in an all-white suit, I felt like we were kindred spirits. I love an all-white look, and I’ve already waxed poetic about how much I love a good suit, so Timothée’s custom Berluti one (by Haider Ackermann himself) really did it for me. The sleek black boots provided the perfect contrast — simple but perfect. I was going to say I would totally wear this outfit, but then I realized I may have beaten him to the punch.
Zendaya in Giambattista Valli Couture (Photo by VALERIE MACON/AFP/Getty Images)
Who picked this look? Elizabeth Tamkin, Market Assistant
Why was it your favorite? I’m very into one-arm looks after seeing so many on the Fall/Winter 2017 runways, and I like that Zendaya wore a chunky diamond bracelet on her bare arm to balance out the asymmetry. I also love how the pleating creates an illusion that makes her dress look like a top and skirt from certain angles.
Agnes Varda in Gucci (Photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImage)
Who picked this look? Tahirah Hairston, freelance writer and Man Repeller contributor
Why was it your favorite? Aside from a few exciting outliers (Zendaya, Maya Rudolph and Eva Marie Saint), the Oscars red carpet style was putting me to sleep.  Then Agnes Varda showed up in Gucci pajamas and woke me right up. Every aspect of her look (the dip-dyed hair, the matching robe, the red mock turtleneck, the tiny pink sunglasses, the white sneakers…) made it clear she was having fun. Upon further research, I learned that she also wore a purple Gucci tracksuit to the Independent Spirit Awards. Can we please get an Agnes Varda and Gucci advertising campaign STAT?
Viola Davis in Michael Kors (Photo by Kevin Mazur/WireImage)
Who picked this look? Amelia Diamond, Head of Creative
Why was it your favorite? That hot pink color is so fun to see on the red carpet. It’s a “risk” — hot pink is one of those colors that can wear its wearer — but I feel like Viola is so calm and elegant that the color works to her advantage and commands the room with her.
Greta Gerwig in Rodarte (Photo by VALERIE MACON/AFP/Getty Images)
Who picked this look? Claire Beermann, editor at ZEITmagazin and Man Repeller contributor
Why was it your favorite? Greta Gerwig’s embroidered Rodarte gown leapt out from my Instagram scroll this morning (I live in Germany so I missed the Oscars due to the time difference). Gleaming like a two-legged daffodil, Greta epitomized optimism, a fitting followup to the appropriately somber black dresses of #TimesUp. Most importantly, though, her gown adhered to a golden (hehe) dressing rule we should all stitch on our underpants: A great dress is remembered for the woman in it, not the other way round.
Lakeith Stanfield in Ermenegildo Zegna Couture (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)
Who picked this look? Edith Young, Photographer and Photo Editor
Why was it your favorite? Lakeith Stanfield looked suave in his two-tone tux, which was apparently designed using sustainable silk production methods as part of the “Red Carpet Green Dress” movement. His diamond-shaped buttons were a nice touch, too. Swoon.
James Ivory in shirt by Andrew Mania (Photo by Steve Granitz/WireImage)
Who picked this look? Imani Randolph, Editorial Intern
Why was it your favorite? The next best thing to Timothée Chalamet in the flesh is Timothée Chalamet printed on a crisp, white dress shirt — thank you, James Ivory, for helping me come to that realization. (Also, where can I get one?) Mr. Ivory’s look delivered a dose of whimsy the red carpet seemed to be otherwise lacking. In a sea of tuxedo/button-down combos we’ve seen a thousand times over, Ivory’s Van Gogh-esque tribute to Call Me By Your Name‘s breakout star was heartwarming.
