Sidenote: Again a song by Belmosaic, I'm sorry! I just thought I might as well post the translations to their songs because, as I said before, they used to be my favorite band. Also I find it very interesting how Kazukis writing style changed over the years!

Xaa-Xaa - Rain Falling in Darkness

Here I am with the week-end special in “Focusing on”! Today’s subject is a quite recent visual kei band, which quickly caught the fans’ heart thanks to their obscure and melting style. Their name is Xaa-Xaa, formed on 2014 and composed by Kazuki (vo.), former singer of several bands like Ballad. and Belmosaic, Haru (gt.), former member of Schwarz-welt, Reiya (ba.) and Roji (dr.), both from Belmosaic. Their name comes from the Japanese word used for the sound of falling rain, a recurring image in their songs, where the concept has a dim and mysterious aura, being always different. Their genre is an heavy metal, sometimes extreme, sometimes melancholic, with several influences from genres like jazz or alternative rock, driven by the distinctive vocals, surely inspired by another great singer of the genre, i.e. Tatsurou from Mucc. Their debut occurred on December 2014 with the first single Usotsuki (Liar), followed by the first mini-album Kowai kurai (Scary cry/Scary darkness), which I reviewed here.

The title-track has a piercing sound, with jazzy parts, along with metallic and astonishing vocals; the song is about the darkness, which scares and surrounds the protagonist’s life. It has been followed by the second mini-album Doshaburi no kanojo (Her downpour).

The title-track has a warm and sensual sound, given by the superb guitar, with a nostalgical touch invading this deep ballad; the song is about a pain caused by a woman. It has been followed by the third mini-album Shinitai (I want to die), the single Yukitokei (Snow clock), the compilation Chuudokushoujou (Poisoing symptoms), the single Shitai, dake desho? (You just want to do it, right?) and the fourth mini-album Ame ni korosareru (Killed by the rain).

The title-track has a notable use of the bass, with a flowing melody and a melancholic atmosphere, given by Kazuki’s deep voice; the song is about the rain, symbol of pain and sorrow and even concept image of the band itself. It has been followed by the series of singles, based on hopelessness, precisely Kamisori (Razor), reviewed here, Dosuguroi (Dull black) and Yomei (Life expectancy) and the first full album Fukou na meiro (Unlucky maze).

The lead-track, entitled Gucha gucha (Stupid), is a really extreme metal track, where Kazuki uses more his screamed vocals and the melody is really adrenalinic; the song is about stupidity which makes life even harder.

Xaa-Xaa achieved to be a phenomenon in about three years, a notable thing in a scene where is always harder finding something unique. Their sound is powerful, deep, incredibly melancholic and most important, is really well cured in each its part, with really peculiar lyrics and overwhelming vocals, quite remindful of old-school angura kei, with its dark and grotesque world. This band is a must for who thinks that visual kei has nothing else to give to its audience and you won’t regret to have listened to them. Meanwhile the band continues his glorious path with the seventh single Maru to batsu (True and false), released last Wednesday, where the band exalted their technique in an exceptional way.

Who might enjoy: who is looking for a young band which is deep and complete under any aspect, musically and thematically.

Recommended songs: Tsumetai, Kowai kurai, Doshaburi no kanojo, Shinitai, Kamisori, Yomei and Gucha gucha.

Sidenote: I know it's not specifically xaaxaa, but belmosaic used to be my favorite band and kagerou is one of my absolute favorite songs until today. The lyrics are too amazing to not be shared!

A Scary and Obscure World

Here I am with the Wednesday review in “Let’s Listen to...”! Today’s subject is the first mini-album by the visual kei rookie band Xaa-xaa, named Kowai kurai (Scary cry) and exactly released one month ago. For who doesn’t know them, they debuted last year and are composed by Kazuki (vo.), singer of Belmosaic, Haru (gt.), former member of Schwarz-welt, Reiya (ba.) and Roji (dr.), both from Belmosaic. The concept of this album is really dark and grotesque, but not for this without any energy. And now... let’s review!

-Tsumetai (Cold): the opening track has a rock sound, filled by an obscure vibe; a powerful dark ballad, musically incredible for a so young band. ---> 9.5/10

-Kowai kurai: the title-track has a rhythm definitely faster but anyway obscure; Kazuki’s vocals, as in the previous track, echo the vibe of singers like Tatsurou from Mucc and this is really rare on the contemporary visual kei; note the little interlude between Haru’s guitar and Roji’s drums and also the jazzish part, with Reiya’s bass lines. ---> 9/10

-Semetono sekai (At least also the world): this track has a more playful and soft rhythm; a simpler ballad compared to Tsumetai, but anyway enjoyable. --->  8.5/10

-Komoriuta (A lullaby): here the vibe is darker, with a charged and speedy rhythm; the dynamic sound enriches more this song. ---> 9/10

-Dokusou orchestra (Solo orchestra): the last track has an orchestra influence, as the title suggests, with some violin parts; a structurally definite song, with a goosebumps final part. ---> 9.5/10

Final Vote ---> 9/10

In conclusion, this band delivered a really unpredictable product compared to the concept they introduced. Probably is the presence of three members of the short-lived Belmosaic which made them more attractive, but differently from that band, their sound is incredibly more mature and introspective. With only five songs they showed that their experience should not be underrated. I am hoping that this project will be the successful one this time. A mini-album for who missed Belmosaic, but with more interest in dark sounds.
