In honour of #bellletstalk day we must reflect on mental illness after trauma. Many survivors of abuse, sexual assault and human trafficking will develop depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, PTSD, C-PTSD, and many more. This does not make you weak, it does not make you unlovable, and it does not make you unworthy of healing. It’s okay, to ask for help. It’s okay if some days you feel like you are fine, and then the next day you fall apart all over again. It is apart of the journey to healing. It may get messy, your going to have to reflect on things you’d rather forget, but the outcome is worth it. You are worth it.

Let's talk about mental health!
Mental health has been a huge part of my life for almost the past decade now. It has been a crazy, scary, frustrating, stressful journey, but it has also been very rewarding. I've learned so much about myself, and I'm continuing to learn and grow and improve. From missing my entire senior year of high school, to relapsing about twice since then, I'm here today and I'm only looking forward. Healing isn't a straight (haha) path; there are twists and turns and roadblocks. Sometimes certain things work one day but they don't work another day. I have to be kind to myself and work with myself to move past the obstacles and continue forward.
Being part of the South Asian community has made my journey a little difficult at times. I've faced many challenges, some of which I'm still trying to overcome today. I remember when I was first diagnosed, I was told to not talk about my depression. Seeking help for mental illness was something you kept behind closed doors and in hushed voices. The stigma around therapy and talking to someone about your problems was so intense. And it still is. Which is why I've tried to be as candid and open about my journey. Talking about depression and anxiety, talking about medication and seeing a psychiatrist. It's nothing to be ashamed of since it affects so many people. It wasn't until I started talking that I learned how many people around me were dealing with similar issues. I finally felt like I wasn't alone. And if I can help someone else in the process of being open about my personal journey? That's even better.
Mental health goes hand in hand with physical health. If you're not feeling your best mentally, it's going to affect you physically. There is no shame in seeking help for your mental health. Just as you would get treatment for illnesses like diabetes or anemia, getting treatment for your mental illness is no different. There is no shame in seeing a psychiatrist, there is no shame in taking medication, there is no shame in seeing a therapist. There is no shame in wanting to heal, be happy, and feel your absolute best. Just remember that you're important. You deserve to be here. You deserve to be happy.
So let's start the conversation. Let's help end the stigma around mental health! #BellLetsTalk

#BellLetsTalk day is a very important day in my life, and for the past 2 years I have made sure to make a post telling all of you the importance of talking about mental health. The only problematic thing about this day, is it is one day of the year and the conversations we have need to happen year-round. Hypocritically, I have spoken about educating yourself and others about the important of mental health, and being open with others about what your going through, and I haven’t done so myself. If you’re close with me, you’ll know that I struggle with anxiety. I keep going back and forth deciding if I want to state this for everyone to read, so if you see this I guess I got the courage to do so. I don’t want to be stigmatized or “labelled” for this, because regardless I push through every day. Some days are better than others. Some days I am not even bothered by the overthinking, some days it is so overpowering that I spiral into an unnecessary funk. Recently I have also struggled with body image issues, and an extreme lack of motivation and drive for what I am working towards in my life. I am usually a very enthusiastic, goofy and driven person so not feeling like that, has been extremely hard to accept. I am not telling you all of this for you to feel bad for me or anything, by any means. My point here is that I only post the highlights of my life, much like everyone else. My aim here is to let you know that none of you are alone. Some of know what I have said above, some of you that is news to you. As I have said before, everyone has their own battles and you can’t tell from “judging” them on the outside. Please be kind to others, show love and care. Reach out. Eliminate your judgement. Take care of yourself. Breathe. Keep going. Push yourself. You can do this. You are not alone. Abuse, whether physical, emotional, verbal, or sexual, can have long-term effects on your mental health. Trauma can affect how you feel about yourself and how you relate to others. Women who have gone through abuse or other trauma have a higher risk of developing a mental health condition, such as depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Trauma and abuse are never your fault. You can get help to heal the physical, mental, and emotional scars of trauma and abuse.
