The flight from Haven Academy after the mismatched team’s failure was perhaps among the moments of Mercury’s life that carried with them the greatest tension, palpable fear. He didn’t possess enough words to describe his trepidation, watching a semi-conscious Emerald bounce precariously where she hung over Hazel’s shoulder. Awareness circulated between them that this was bad. Their Fall maiden, the woman who had provided both Emerald and Mercury with something resembling stability, dead. None of them could say what had happened in the vault; the only certainty was that Cinder was gone, and without her straightforward, demanding brand of guidance Mercury was at a loss. She may have been a great and terrible force, blinded by her quest for power and revenge, but she was the only authority figure he had ever truly trusted. Now, with her gone, a strange restlessness crept into his thoughts.

It was some small mercy that traveling now carried with it a whole host of precautions. The majority of Mercury’s attention was monopolized by cooperating with Hazel and, when she was again able to travel, Emerald to avoid law enforcement. The going was slow, but in due time the group found themselves in a small village not far away from Mistral--close enough that the local comm tower delivered signal, weak though it was.

Well after midnight the group settled in to an abandoned house near the outskirts of the village. Though their position was not secure, to continue would be to exacerbate the exhaustion which already threatened to cloud judgment and slow reflexes. A shaky Emerald ventured into the village, hood drawn and face disguised by illusion when forced to interact with anyone. She soon returned with food and water--good enough, Mercury acknowledged as he took his share.

After a quick dinner Hazel and Emerald both settled onto the dusty, splintered floor to try and get some sleep. For a time Mercury tried as well. He would need it, he knew, when they had to continue their escape from unfriendly territory. But sleep would not come, chased away by dark and unpleasant thoughts.

What would happen now.

Emerald.

Cinder.

There was no point. With a faint sigh Mercury inched into a sitting position, wincing at the pain already blooming in his back from the less than hospitable sleeping arrangements. From his pocket he fished out his scroll and unlocked it, not expecting much. Communications had been sporadic at best even in the major cities since the fall of Beacon.

To his surprise, he had two local bars. Well, that was something. Curiosity led him to tap into his former go-to messaging app, curiosity that turned into a great leap of excitement.

Friends Online--only one.

BelleNoir.

Mercury did not hesitate for a moment before he tapped her icon, pulling up a message history in which the last of them was dated before the fall. The first, however, went back years, and the history between them predated even this particular log. His fingers skated across the screen rapidly, drafting a short message and sending it almost without thinking.

The day had been completely emotionally exhausting for Blake. Once again, one of her friends had been seriously hurt in her defense. Sun hadn't been dismembered, but he'd been bleeding heavily by the time she'd gotten him home. What made it worse was who had injured him--Ilia, her best friend in the 'Fang aside from Adam. Once more, her past was clashing with her present.

So when she'd settled in bed with her scroll, she sought comfort in the past about which she'd never told anyone before, and never would. Her thumb pressed on the icon for the old Amity messaging program and she almost pulled up the history with one individual in particular. But something made her pause.

The little dot was green. He was online. Local comms.

Her heart leapt as her eyes widened. She hadn't talked to SteelWings since she'd become a part of Team RWBY; his work kept him busy and dark. For the longest time, she'd hoped to hear from him... then Beacon fell, and she lost all hope.

But now he was here, in Menagerie of all places. Almost immediately, her thumbs began to fly.

[ BelleNoir ] - Steel! Steel, what are you doing in Menagerie?!

[ BelleNoir ] - Are... are you on a job...?

Less than twenty-four hours prior, Blake had been a part of the White Fang.  She had stolen property, she had destroyed property, and she had even killed, just in the name of justice.  But as time had passed since she left home, she’d slowly come to realize that the White Fang no longer truly stood for justice--at least, not from where she stood by Adam’s side.  From that perspective, she saw nothing but true terrorism--and the moment she realized that was the moment she realized she couldn’t remain with them.

And so she left.  She ran away, cutting through the coupling so the train pulled her away from Adam and the White Fang, away from the life she’d known.

She hadn’t known where she would go at first.  When Blake finally stopped for the night, well away from the railroad tracks and deep in the forests surrounding Vale, she hadn’t known what she wanted to do with her life now.  She could go literally anywhere, do anything.  Until she pulled out her scroll, she hadn’t known what her future held.

But when she saw his words on the screen, the comfort, reassurance, and encouragement she always sought from him, she realized that, perhaps, she could have a new goal... and a new partner.

And so, later that night after she’d gotten some rest, she pulled up the Amity chat program and sought him out again.
