So I’ve been reading a few romance novels lately and one thing that I have come to realize is that I really don’t like insta-romance that much. When characters get together after a few days or proclaim their love within a matter of weeks it just feels unrealistic and rushed to me.
I don’t know if it’s exactly “slow burn” that I like (because I don’t know how others may define that), but I know I like when the characters initially meet, yeah maybe they notice like “oh they’re hot”, but they don’t act on it, and then as they get to know each other over weeks or months, there is pining... circling... I want to feel frustrated that they’re not together, so that when that first kiss comes or they finally get together, I’m like “YES!!!!!!!!”
#romance#romance novels#romance tropes#slow burn#not sure if it IS slow burn I am describing... maybe?#examples:#bangel#there's an initial attraction but they don't get together til partway through S2 with the circling and pining before that#captain swan#the pining and flirting before Emma even went on a date with Killian#Team Jacob#the way Bella and Jacob were friends and I got to see that develop and she didnt even realize she was in love with him til Eclipse#Bellarke#in the show anyway with the rivals to friends and then ALL THE PINING AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH#even if it never came to fruition

Clarke changing her mind and asking Bellamy to go to the mountain after Lexa tells her “love is weakness”, and explicitly telling him she is changing her mind because she was “being weak” does more for early bellarke than anything else.
Whatever J.Roth might wanna tell us, Bellarke was a slow burn romance in the making that was snuffed out for bullshit reasons.

Here We go again Bellarke warriors, if you can hear me, it's been about 1680 days since I stopped caring (or so I thought)
I hadn't been to tumblr in years, before I decided to give the 100 a rewatch in June of this year, as I had given up somewhere around the start of season 5 (I remember hating the LONG ass timeskip teased at the end of S4, I guess some other media must have swallowed me during hiatus, and when I tried to give that season a chance I vividly remember 1) I couldn't see shit on my screen 2) I hated what the timeskip did to the established relationships) and so I dropped it for good, looking back I almost can't believe I could just...not finish it like that because let me tell you I did NOT fuck about Clarke and Bellamy, and Raven, and Monty, and probably some other characters back in 2015-2016. I think I maybe did not appreciate season 4 enough at the time it was airing (because I think binge-watching is very flattering for that season, watching it live I remember it was frustrating to watch the characters go on side quests in 4A) but now knowing what the character arcs are and where it was going makes it my second-favorite season. BUT, I digress, wow. This is meant to be a rambling, incohisive love letter to the compelling relationship between Bellamy and Clarke. I warn you, they truly do not fucking leave you as it turns out. I would go to the trenches for them back in my fandom days in 2015-17, and I realised, after binge-waching the show over 4 sleepless nights (seasons 1-6, which are the only seasons in existence, obviously)that I STILL just FUCKING CARE SO MUCH. I NEVER CARED ABOUT FICTIONAL CHARACTERS SO MUCH AS CARE FOR THESE TWO SEPARATELY, AND AS SOULMATES. Because let me tell you, Clarke and Bellamy, they fucking love each. Like actual, happens-only-in-romances LOVE. It is frankly INSANE how JRoth, K*m Shum and other managed to gaslight me over some of the bellarke scenes in S2-S3 as to make me think it's in my (and thousand's of fans') head WHEN IT IS SO FUCKING OBVIOUS FROM SCORE, EDITING CHOICES, LONGING LOOK SHOTS, HANDS SHOTS, LINES, AND FINALLY, ACTING AND DIRECTION THAT THESE TWO ARE LOVERS.
I have never, ever, before or since, followed two characters who were so compatible, so equal, so trusting in each other, so open with one another, so mindful of the other's emotions and needs, so so so made for each other, that it is no surprise to me that they are top 10 F/M pairing on AO3. Because Bellamy and Clarke would fall in love in every imaginable scenario, in every universe, across time. I am not usually that cheesy or cringy, but it is true. I could not put my finger on why they are my absolute favorite to read fanfic for and then it occurred to me. That as long as the hands of fate put these two in proximity of each other, it;s a done deal. That chemistry transcends the limits of a single tv show. The depth with how Clarke and Bellamy love each other honestly makes me pause for breath sometimes. It is not just the iconic, famous bellarke scenes, but also the quiet moments.
Like in 6x05 or 6x06 (cant remember) when Clarke's body was stolen by Josephine after her one-night stand with Cillian. (stay with me) Bellamy, unaware that Clarke isn't herself at that point, comes over to chat, he's clearly at least a bit jealous over her sleeping with Cillian, and yet he says "happiness looks good on you" with that wide, earnest smile. And just wow. How must he love her, to be so utterly happy for her own happiness that has in that instance nothing to do with him. so selfless. well, selfless is basically Bellamy's middle name.
Or how in season 4, after a lot of the characters and at times the narrative wanted to push this idea on Clarke that she is the sole leader of her people, gets right back on track to her co-leader dynamic with Bellamy, constantly checking with him, considering his input, and respecting choices that she herself would maybe not make (releasing the ensalved arkadians and grounders vs ensuring they get a machine necessary to generate water) but always understanding that these choices agree with his core values, and she loves him for it.
This post is way too long. I love Bellamy. I love Clarke. People often use the 'MY PARENTS" about ships on twitter, and you know what, in my case that's kinda true with bellarke. I met these characters when I was 15. I am 25 now, and with an adult perspective to my surprise I found their relationship even more profound then I remembered, and I was insanse about them already. They are truly THE power couple of all time. I miss the 100, If you wanna ramble about it together, feel welcome to send me ask, I'd love to have an excuse to share some of my (sometimes unpopular) opinions lol.

It's funny, I was definitely very much into Spuffy while I was watching BTVS. And I'm still into them anytime I watch them together. But Spangel captivates me so much more, and I'm not sure why. Sure, maybe part of it is that it's gay, and as a lesbian I generally find gay/lesbian romances more compelling than het romances, but that's not always true. I was more into Janeway/Chakotay than Janeway/7, and more into Bellarke than Clexa. And Spuffy is a deeply moving relationship for many reasons. I didn't spend time gathering all the names and number of times Spike used those names for Buffy for no reason. But Spangel moves me more.
Maybe it's because of how long they knew each other and how much they've been through together. There's a certain kind of intensity to a relationship that only happens when you know someone for a long time and have a very intimate relationship with them. Spike and Angel spent almost twenty years together, traveling all over the world, bonding by killing together and both being incredibly brutal in their own way(and also they had sex at least once, though I'd be surprised if it was only once). Spike said when they first saw each other in BTVS that Angelus had been his Yoda. When they saw each other on that sub in the 1940s Spike was so happy to see him and so proud that he was with Angelus in front of those other two vampires. He was entirely obedient to Angel, something he never was to anyone else. He even agreed to swim eight hours to shore simply because Angel told him to, not even bothering to argue, let alone fight. Angel told Lawson with complete confidence that Spike would do anything Angel told him to do, and he was right.
Spike is the only vampire Angel's never been able to bring himself to try to kill. Angel killed Darla, the vampire he was in a romantic relationship with, and he set both her and Drusilla on fire, Drusilla being someone he felt incredible guilt for victimizing. And yet it's Spike whom Angel can't kill. The why of this isn't entirely clear. Soulless Spike had been a danger to both him and Buffy in the past. Soulless Spike has tortured Angel, and has definitely tried to kill Angel. But still, Angel couldn't bring himself to try to kill Spike. This devotion is so interesting. Where did it come from?
In s5 of ATS, anytime Angel was in danger, ensouled Spike was right there to protect him. And vice versa. Angel took a goddamn stake for him without hesitation. Despite the fact that they spent the entire season bickering and both claimed on multiple occasions that they didn't like each other(though they still ended up spending time with each other for no reason).
Their relationship is just so long-lasting and so complex. There's so much to speculate about their past and so many possibilities for where their relationship could go(though admittedly that last part is true for most ships).
So yeah, I think that's why I find it more compelling.

BELLARKE ENDGAME - 6x13
i still cannot believe we have confirmation that bellamy and clarke were written to be romantic the whole time. as shitty as the ending was, THEY WERE WRITTEN TO BE ROMANTIC.
#of course they were - it was blatantly right there for everyone to see#the other side of the fandom and the writers gaslighted us so we wouldn't believe our own eyes#a romance should be organic in the story and visible without a kiss or words#that was a romance set in a traumatic post apocalyptic world#and they pretended they didn't write it that way so they could be cruel to the fans they didn't like#but there's a document that proves bellarke was romantic and it's called t100 s1-6#................................................................................................................#luckily we got confirmation from eliza and bob for it#because of course jroth said we misinterpreted it#after he changed his mind and scrapped bellarke getting together in 6x11#and created a disaster crackfic called season 7

I’ll stand by the fact that bellarke shippers are wrong about how the ship should have been canon (yes I’m still talking about this show). Don’t get me wrong have a blast shipping them I couldn’t care less but I don’t think they should have been a canon romantic ship. It’s SO MUCH BETTER seeing them being a platonic pair between a man and woman. Romance is already pushed in every show, movie, book, etc (need more aroace and platonic rep in the first place) but especially when there are two characters of the opposite gender that are close. It’s so nice seeing them be so openly close and caring so so much about each other and staying platonic. You can always explore the romantic side through fanfic in the end having a semi-mainstream tv show double, triple, quadruple down on a girl/boy friendship just being platonic is great, sorry!
#also the thing is that they are canon (ignoring the ending) they are canonically the two closest people by the end of show and I think#that’s awesome#clarke griffin#bellamy blake#bellarke#platonic bellarke#the 100#the cw#the 100 cw#cw the 100#clexa#the delinquents#octavia blake#john murphy#raven reyes#madi griffin#emori#commander lexa#monty green#jasper jordan#wells jaha#finn collins#skaikru#spacekru#finalkru#murphamy#moona posts

screenshotting this scene isn't enough, there's so much to unpack,,,, like,,,
bellamy asleep on the couch in her office,,,,, they were probably working together and she told him to take a little nap,,,,
she writes his name like <33 ~~bellamy blake~~ <33 with curly letters and little hearts
the script saying it was easy for her to include him on the list
he hears her crying and then he wakes up and knows immediately what she's crying about and how to comfort her
"if i'm on that list, you're on that list, write it down or i will" is just "you want forgiveness, i'll give that to you" or "together" or essentially ily etc etc etc!!!!!!
he writes her name in all caps, like he's daring anyone to argue with him that clarke griffin doesn't belong on this list too
"you still have hope?" "we still breathing?"
because they lift each other up when one of them is struggling with the weight of it all after a particularly hard day, they provide that encouragement when no one else does,
the hand on her shoulder purely for comfort's sake, much like the 3x13 hug
the hand nuzzle????????? hello??????? ohmygod???
girlie looks so sad when he walks away,,,,
#bellarke#the 100#iz watches t100#the100rewatch2023#4x03#god i love romance !!!!!!!!!!#s4 blarke >>>>>>>#i mean. s4 in general#but look at them. look at this.#don't u want to smash ur head through drywall#it's just quintessentially Them it makes me yell#also he looks so good in this tan shirt#y'all talk about the blue henley but this.... this is Right There#Youtube

may the best bait win! propaganda under the cut:
bellamy and clarke:
They start off as a rivals-to-lovers kind of arc, the actors are married and have a kid in addition to (allegedly) being friends with benefits in the early seasons They have multiple intense romantic moments even while they're with other people, the actors were told to play them romantically and have spoken up about it, and are now married, they once won a "sexiest moment" award despite it just being him pushing her hair back, they get married in the books, they constantly tell each other that they need each other, and call themselves "the head and the heart"
they get married in the books the actors were told to play them romantically for seven years, but in the final season, clarke KILLS bellamy because the showrunner hated his teen girl fanbase. they also had multiple almost-love confessions, and constantly said things like "i need you" and called themselves "the head and the heart"
"m/f pairs who have some kind of weird fucking thing going on that is never explicitly named platonic or romantic" "couples whose romance is teased but never confirmed as such" No matter how much the showrunner tries to deny it, it was quite obvious from the beginning that Clarke and Bellamy were supposed to end up together. But then Clexa happened, and the massive backlash to Lexa's death (understandable) pretty much killed any chance they could manifest that romance. I'm okay with that, because it allows Bellarke a complexity that most straight pairings don't have. But the chemistry, and the chemistry was strong - so strong that the actors got married!
They're canon in the books the show is based on, and their plot seemed like it would be a slow burn enemies to friends to lovers, but the producer actively made fun of fans for shipping it and ended the series with clarke killing bellamy.
janeway and chakotay:
Janeway is the Captain of a Starfleet ship lost so far from home it will take decades to reach. Chakotay is the Captain of a Maquis (rebel) ship also lost there. They decide to work together to get home and combine their crews when the Maquis ship is destroyed, and Chakotay becomes her second-in-command. Because of the seriousness of the situation, Janeway feels that she cannot afford the distraction of a romance and so they never get together. They have NO personal space and look longingly at each other quite often and one episode has them forced to abandon ship potentially forever and they live together in a little house and he builds her a bathtub because she complains about not having one and they share a romantically charged massage where he tells her a made up story about a warrior and the woman who inspired him which he openly admits is made up and actually about them. Also he holds her while she cries about their chance of going back to the ship being destroyed. In a different episode she “dies” and he cradled her body while weeping about it. They also have candlelit dinners regularly and she lent him a copy of the book her ex-fiancé gave her, and every time the show conspires to make one temporarily unaware of the other, they flirt hardcore. An episode designed to show how they wouldn’t work as a couple only makes more people ship them. Also a young version of Janeway meets older Chakotay via time travel and asks him if they’re together in the future despite her being engaged at that point. He declined to answer directly.
they have a lot of Tension thruout the series & a very deep relationship, but Janeway has someone waiting for her back home & Chakotay ends up in a romance plot with another person in the last season (that I personally felt came from out of nowhere but whatever) I rooted for them! I rooted for a str8 couple! I did not care that Janeway had someone waiting for her back home even tho I usually do! but I did not care! they deserved to fuck!

Not only was Bellarke ruined in season 7 of The 100 (while all of season 6, in particular, foreshadowed their romance), but everything else went there too. This entire season 7 is a disaster, both for the characters and the plot. It's sad.

Reading that dumb tweet was weirdly cathartic. It made me realize, as awful as Bellarke's ending was, I wouldn't trade their S1-6 journey for the brief speedrun CL had.
Bellamy and Clarke loved each other, and naturally, I wanted them to have a happy ending together. But, if nothing else, against the backdrop of a bleak narrative that did everything in its power to break these characters, including tragic relationships like CL - by continuously challenging them and having them find a home in each other before saving the day time and again, the show dedicated nearly its whole run on clarifying that the (yes, familial AND romantic) soulmate relationship of Bellarke = love = unity = strength = victory.
Humanity wins when Bellarke is united, however bittersweet the victory, and it fails when Bellarke is in discord. No other ship on that show held the power Bellarke did to bring the story's objectives of survival and living a good life to a full-circle close. A S1-6 canon-compliant version of Bellarke with their fully actualized ending would represent everything the show endeavored to teach its audience about love saving the world, exemplified by the complete scope of their seven-season evolution.
The CLs wouldn't have wasted a decade attempting to shut down support for Bellarke if they didn't know a romance for Bellarke was unfolding before their eyes with an integral purpose for the larger narrative and craved both for their ship. What Bellarke had in those first six seasons, the bitterest of their rival fandom wish it had rerouted to CL.
