Lmao, they call Shostakovich "Polish-russian", guess where his roots take place from?
Tumblr media
IT'S FUCKING BELARUS.
EVEN HIS SURNAME IS TYPICAL BELARUTHIAN.
Although in łacinka, it would be Šostakovič.
His grandparents from both sides were repressed and deported to Siberia.
Šostakovič also strongly condemned antisemitism. He also admitted that russia was a very unsafe place for Jews.
People say: "Where is your Belaruthian culture" - THERE IT IS.

Imagine doing song in a language that less than 10 million people understand. Imagine what kind of cultural impact it can have. Well
Udio can almost do phonk in Belarusian. And finally Runway has something interesting to show. Welcome to dark sounds of Belarusian.

Discovering the Heart of Belarus: A Journey Through Language and Culture
Have you ever heard the beauty of the Belarusian language? It’s like poetry in motion, a melodic blend of history, resilience, and pride. Belarusian is one of the two official languages of Belarus, yet it’s considered endangered due to a long history of cultural suppression. But what makes it so unique?
One fascinating aspect is Łacinka, the Latin script used for writing Belarusian. While Cyrillic is the dominant script today, Łacinka has a rich history. It was widely used in the 16th–19th centuries, especially in literature and documents of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, of which Belarus was a part. Łacinka connects Belarusian culture to its Western European neighbors, like Poland and Lithuania, and serves as a bridge between East and West.
Belarusian itself is a treasure trove of poetic expressions. Did you know that it’s often described as one of the softest and most harmonious Slavic languages? Words like “сэрца” (serca, heart) and “надзея” (nadzieja, hope) carry deep emotional weight, reflecting the warmth and strength of the Belarusian spirit.
My new song, "Pieśnia Serca" (Песня Сэрца), is a tribute to this incredible culture. It’s written in Belarusian as a way to honor the language and its enduring power. The song speaks about hope and resilience, themes that resonate deeply with the history of the Belarusian people.
If you’re new to Belarusian culture, here’s something to think about: The Belarusian language was once spoken by kings and poets in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and its roots still run deep today. By sharing songs, stories, and traditions, we can help keep this vibrant culture alive.
Give “Pieśnia Serca” a listen and let it take you on a journey through the heart of Belarus. Let’s celebrate the beauty of a language and a culture that deserve to shine brighter in the world.

Lyrics and translate:
Comnyja časy, jak cieni, lehli na ziamlu,
Dark times, like shadows, have fallen on the earth,
Serca scisnuła tuha, bol' i žal'.
The heart is gripped by sorrow, pain, and grief.
Minaje čas, jak vada ŭ race ciače,
Time passes, like water flows in a river,
Ale ŭ dušy žyve nadzieja, jak ahień.
But in the soul, hope lives like a flame.
Niachaj ciemra panuje navokał,
Let darkness reign all around,
Niachaj sliozy ciakuc' pa ščokach,
Let tears stream down the cheeks,
Ale verym my ŭ svietły dzień,
But we believe in a bright day,
Nadzeja – naš kompas, naš cień.
Hope is our compass, our shadow.
Znikajuć zamki, rujnujucca mury,
Castles vanish, walls crumble,
Liudzi hublajuć vieru ŭ lepšy sviet.
People lose faith in a better world.
Ale pamiataj, što pasla nočy pryjdzie svitanak,
But remember, after the night comes the dawn,
I sonca znoŭ zazjaje, prahonjačy cień.
And the sun will shine again, chasing away the shadow.
Niachaj ciemra panuje navokał,
Let darkness reign all around,
Niachaj sliozy ciakuc' pa ščokach,
Let tears stream down the cheeks,
Ale verym my ŭ svietły dzień,
But we believe in a bright day,
Nadzeja – naš kompas, naš cień.
Hope is our compass, our shadow.

FOLK MUSIC HELP
OK! My lovely folk music people! I am desperately trying to find folk songs about Rusalki, but the language barrier has left me blocked ToT
I've found an absolutely stellar album, from Kitka's The Rusalka Cycle - Songs Between the Worlds
youtube
I'm pretty darn close to just reaching out to them directly, but I'm wondering if any of y'all know of any folk songs about Rusalki????
It's really rare to get folk music about a monster like this and I am chomping at the bit to learn some and talk about them in my own folk music circles
Also if you know the english translations of the ones you know, I would thank you 1 million times to know what those songs are about 😭

So I’m still doing my “add at least one song from every country in the world to my playlist” resolution. The Spotify autocomplete function/algorithm in general is really reminding me of one of the reasons I wanted to do it.
Basically if you search for a relatively well off country, first results will be something like “restaurant/tavern/date night music from [country].” Countries with lower GDPs or recent wars or what have you will generally get you podcast episodes about Why is [Country] So Troubled?
And trust me, there’s definitely room for educational content like that.
Buuuut art can be a great way to get past headlines and stereotypes and so on and so forth. So it’s fun to dig a little deeper like … okay, what’s your indie scene? What does your r&b sound like? What sounds do your DJs like sampling? Do you have a metal scene? Etc etc etc. As a species we’re great at making art despite everything.

Mom: Actually, if not for the fact that AR$EN was banned in russia, I'd never learn about his music... Despite, what is Belaruthian music? Either "a ja liahu-pryliahu" or heavy metal...

It seems to me that
I hardly lived all winter
I've already used an antidepressant
So answer me: what are you trembling about
Is every quantum mine?
I'm pretty sure they put an implant in me.
I'm pretty sure they put an implant in me.
When will the Sun turn into a red giant?
Let it incinerate, let it burn
My every corrupted quantum
