This World Series between the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers is going to be historic. Two old school franchises who haven't met in the Fall Classic since 1916 when a 21-year old Babe Ruth pitched a complete game and won a 14-inning 2-1 duel against Brooklyn's Sherry Smith (who also pitched 14 innings.) What's historic for today's era of Baseball is that this is the first World Series where both participating teams are managed by minority Managers. Alex Cora of the Red Sox is from Puerto Rico where Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts is half Black and half Japanese. That in itself distinguishes this Fall classic from the first and only meeting in 1916. USA Baseball finally reaches the elusive Top of the World Baseball Classic mountain with a dominating 8-0 win verses the then undefeated Puerto Rico who once again is the runner up. Team USA beat Baseball powerhouses Dominican Republic, Japan and Puerto Rico to earn their first WBC title. Finally this tournament lived up to the expectations of its creators. The game is definitely growing worldwide. Puerto Rico returns to the World Baseball Classic finals with a 4-3 win over the Netherlands in 11-innings. The Netherlands hung in there but couldn't capitalize of runners in scoring position. And if people didn't know about Wladimir Balentien before, they do now. That guy can mash. Maybe he can have one last go in MLB after he finishes playing in NPB. I left it tied at 3-3. BIG WIN for Puerto Rico against the Dominican last night in the second round of the World Baseball Classic. Baseball has had a bit of a Renaissance in Puerto Rico during the last decade or so. Financial issues threatened La Liga de Beisbol Profesional Roberto Clemente a few years ago and there was a general decline with the game at the little league level. Today the winter League is as strong as it has been in recent times fueled by Puerto Rico's first Caribbean League Championship this year since 2000 and the rise of such young Puerto Rican superstars like Carlos Correa and Francisco Lindor among others. With the United States' 6-3 win against the 2013 World Baseball Classic champion Dominican Republic, we know that we will have a new World Baseball Champion crowned in Los Angeles. The last four standing are the aforementioned United States who want to win the tournament for many a reason. Puerto Rico, who was the runner up in the last tournament, want to add two more wins to their record to become the second undefeated team to win the tournament (2013 Dominican Republic). Fellow undefeated team, teo time winner Samurai Japan looks to return to the mountain top with their record setting fourth straight Championship round appearance. Rounding out the quartet is the dark horse Netherlands. The marquee match up of the WBC and the rematch of the final game of the last WBC tournament of 2013 sees the defending champs Dominican Republic against runner up Puerto Rico. Both of these Caribbean Baseball powers are going in against each other undefeated for major bragging rights. It's going to be an exciting game. The only thing that would make this better if it was played on the East Coast where both populations are well represented.
