ABBA - Waterloo 1974
"Waterloo" is a song by Swedish pop group ABBA, with music composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and lyrics written by Stikkan Anderson. It is first single of the group's second studio album of the same name, and their first under the Atlantic label in the US. This was also the first single to be credited to the group performing under the name ABBA. The title and lyrics reference the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, and use it as a metaphor for a romantic relationship.
In 1974, "Waterloo" represented Sweden in the 19th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest held in Brighton, winning the contest and beginning ABBA's path to worldwide fame. The song differed from the standard "dramatic ballad" tradition at the contest by its flavour and rhythm, as well as by its performance. ABBA gave the audience something that had rarely been seen before in Eurovision: flashy costumes (including silver platform boots), a catchy uptempo song and simple choreography. It was the first winning entry in a language other than that of their home country; prior to 1973, all Eurovision singers had been required to sing in their country's native tongue, a restriction that was lifted briefly for the contests between 1973 and 1976 (thus allowing "Waterloo" to be sung in English), then reinstated before ultimately being removed again in 1999. Watch the performance in Swedish here. Sveriges Radio released a promo video for "Waterloo" that was directed by film director Lasse Hallström, whose first notable English-language film success was What's Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993. ABBA recorded the German and French versions of "Waterloo" in March and April 1974; the French version was adapted by Alain Boublil, who would later go on to co-write the 1980 musical Les Misérables.
The song shot to number 1 in the UK and stayed there for two weeks, becoming the first of the band's nine UK number 1's, and the 16th biggest selling single of the year in the UK. It also topped the charts in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, West Germany, Ireland, Norway, and Switzerland, while reaching the Top 3 in Austria, France, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden. Unlike other Eurovision-winning tunes, the song's appeal transcended Europe: "Waterloo" also topped the charts in South Africa, and reached the Top 10 in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Rhodesia, and the US (peaking at number 6, their third-highest-charting US hit after number 1 "Dancing Queen" and number 3 "Take a Chance on Me"). In 2005, at Eurovision fiftieth anniversary competition Congratulations: 50 Years of the Eurovision Song Contest, "Waterloo" was chosen as the best song in the contest's history.
"Waterloo" is featured in the encore of the musical Mamma Mia!. The song does not have a context or a meaning. It is just performed as a musical number in which members of the audience are encouraged to get up off their seats and sing, dance and clap along. The song is performed by the cast over the closing credits of the film Mamma Mia!, but is not featured on the official soundtrack. It is also performed as part of the story in the sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, by Hugh Skinner and Lily James.
The Australian film Muriel's Wedding (1994), features "Waterloo" in a pivotal scene in which lead Toni Collette bonds with the character played by Rachel Griffiths. The film's soundtrack, featuring five ABBA tracks, is widely regarded as having helped to fuel the revival of popular interest in ABBA's music in the mid-1990s. "Waterloo" features prominently in the 2015 science-fiction film The Martian. The song plays as the film's lead, played by Matt Damon, works to ready his launch vehicle for a last-chance escape from Mars. In "Mother Simpson", the eighth episode of the seventh season of The Simpsons, Mr. Burns plays "Ride of the Valkyries" from a tank about to storm the Simpson home, but the song is cut-off and "Waterloo" is played, to which Smithers apologizes, advising he "must have accidentally taped over that".
"Waterloo" received a total of 89% yes votes!

book recs pls? U have amazing taste
im gonna assume this is half in reference to the lilith vincent book i mentioned earlier so i'll give you some of my favorite romances 💞 i tried not to rec a book i've already suggested here before, so some of my very favorites ever are left out!
the authors I'll read like literally anything by are Tessa Bailey, Lily Gold, Ana Huang, J.T. Geissinger, Elsie Silver, Harley Laroux, Rina Kent... and probably someone I'm forgetting tbh but those are some of my favs
also i got a little out of hand and these are kinda all over the place lmao, but here we go! my standards for romance are very low btw so don't judge my taste
Darker romances:
Sticking with Lilith Vincent - I love her books Brutal Intentions and (to a lesser extent) Pageant. Brutal Intentions is a step-dad romance, Pageant (the first of two books, I think the second is wayyy better) is like... dark, mafia, reverse harem, kidnapping, a whole lot tbh. Look up trigger warnings!!! I think she lists them at the start of the book
I don't particularly like H.D. Carlton (I very much so disliked Haunting/Hunting Adeline) but I fucking LOVED her book Does It Hurt? If you want fucked up characters, toxic relationships, noncon, and a pretty well-written subplot for a self-published romance I would recommend this one! (tbh I'm half convinced it's ghostwritten, I cant fathom Haunting Adeline and Does It Hurt? being written by the same person)
Sinners Anonymous & it's sequels by Somme Sketcher. Mafia romance. Age-gap. Kinda trashy but very fun imo. Also read Danielle Lori's Made series if that sounds neat to you!
M.L. Marian's Claimed & Tamed series. Each book follows a different man in the same family where the tradition is that men kidnap their wives. My favorite is Caught <3
Romcoms/Lighter stuff:
I like most Mariana Zapata books, but my favorite is either Under Locke or Luna and the Lie. I've read 7 of her books and they're all basically the same structure with the same characters, so if you read one and like the dynamics you'll probably like her others
One Percent of You by Michelle Gross is my favorite single mom romance of all time. Tattoo artist who hates kids falls in love with his over-worked neighbor who's a single mother of two. SO cute and soft
Bittersweet by Morgan Elizabeth. tattoo artist x baker, this is one of my favorite romcoms ever.
Sunny Disposition by Deanna Gray. Amnesia, college, hockey, roommates to lovers, this is a very soft and fun read that I enjoyed as a bit of a palette cleanser. Iirc it was a little long, but a good time
Other??:
When a Scot Ties the Knot by Tessa Dare. I don't like historical romance much, but this doesn't really feel like one to me! A woman makes up a soldier to write letters to so she can avoid getting married, and years later he shows up on her doorstep ready for their wedding. This is so much fun
Transcendence by Shay Savage - two words for you: Caveman Romance. This is told entirely from the caveman's perspective and tells the story of him meeting a woman who's very odd (because she's from the future) and their life together. It drags a little bit at times, but I think it's so so fun and the end had me crying
King by TM Frazier goes a little off the rails, but I had fun with it. The main character is called 'Pup' for like 90% of the book and that was enough for me. Our FMC has amnesia and is taken in by a local gang leader and the plot goes from there
Under His Heel by Adara Wolf - ok before I say what this is about, I cannot overstate how dark and fucked up this book series is. They're disturbing. I loved them, I've read them all at least twice, but they are deeply upsetting. It takes place in space in the far distant future and follows our main character Alex as he becomes an indentured servant for a sociopath named Captain Tracht. These books are a weird mix of porn and plot, but if you want fucked up smut and fucked up relationship dynamics, this is the holy grail
#asks and answers#recs#btw rina kent's books ARE NOT GOOD but i've read like 20 of them#just because i've read them doesn't mean some of them aren't terrible lmfao#stokeholdsblog

Dating the other side
Cultural Clashes
When two individuals from different cultural backgrounds converge, they can unknowingly ignite a flame that has the potential to consume their relationship entirely. This inferno can take on many forms, fueled by an array of factors, such as opposing values, divergent beliefs, and conflicting customs and traditions. In my own life, I’ve encountered this phenomenon firsthand. Coming from the exotic and far-off land of Zambia, Thanksgiving was nothing more than a vague and mysterious concept to me. Its meaning and relevance were lost in translation, and I found myself feeling like a stranger in my own partner’s world. Though I made every effort to comprehend its history and customs, I was consumed by a sense of fraudulence, struggling to adjust to this strange and unfamiliar ritual. The anxiety it wrought was almost unbearable, yet I kept it all bottled up inside, hidden away from the world. It’s no easy task to slip into someone else’s shoes and see things from their perspective, especially when certain things seem so natural and ordinary to you. But each of us possesses our own personal truths, molded by our experiences, backgrounds, traditions, values, nationality, status, and education, among other factors. The more these qualities align with those of our partner, the smoother the road to melding together will be. But even with these similarities, the differences can still threaten to tear us apart if we’re not careful. The key is to recognize and respect each other’s personal truths, and to tread cautiously as we explore the uncharted terrain of cultural fusion. Another challenge that arises in these relationships is the effort required to truly understand your partner’s perspective. It’s all too easy to fall into the trap of viewing things solely through the lens of our own experiences, failing to grasp the nuances and complexities of another’s worldview. Take my own situation, for instance. Growing up in Zambia, my views on politics and tradition were considered rather conservative by American standards, even though I would consider myself to be a liberal. This is because the blending of these two spheres in Zambia is vastly different from that of America, and likely different from other parts of the world as well. As a result, our personal truths on relationships are already at odds before we even begin to engage with one another. It’s crucial to acknowledge and respect these differences, rather than allowing them to become a point of contention. We must be willing to step outside of our comfort zones and attempt to see things from another perspective, even if it means challenging our own beliefs and assumptions. Only then can we hope to bridge the divide and create a truly harmonious relationship, one that transcends the limitations of our individual cultural backgrounds.
Cultural Fusion: Navigating the Challenges and Rewards in a Relationship
Love and Understanding: Building Bonds Across Cultural Divides
The feeling of being misunderstood, of being an outsider in one’s own skin, is something that cuts deep. It’s a wound that never quite heals, a scar that constantly throbs with the pain of centuries of oppression and marginalization. For me, the narratives of Africa and the stereotypes of being Black have been a constant source of frustration and anger. The ignorance of those who see Africa as nothing more than a vast, untamed wilderness filled with wild animals and savage tribes is staggering. And yet, it persists, a stubborn stain on the fabric of our collective consciousness. But it’s not just the outside world that perpetuates these myths and stereotypes. It’s also the people closest to us, the ones we love and trust the most. Family and friends who may not fully understand or appreciate the complexities of our cultural identities can unwittingly reinforce harmful narratives, leaving us feeling isolated and alone. And yet, there is hope. For those who are willing to take the leap and enter into a relationship with someone from a different culture, the rewards can be immeasurable. Yes, it’s a daunting task, fraught with challenges and pitfalls. But it’s also an opportunity to learn, to grow, and to forge a bond that transcends the barriers of race and culture. The key, as with all relationships, is loyalty. Loyalty to one another, yes, but also to the shared goal of breaking down the barriers that divide us. It’s a noble pursuit, and one that requires patience, understanding, and an unshakeable commitment to one another. As I pen these words, I am reminded of the innumerable times that cultural misunderstandings have caused rifts in relationships. Perhaps you too have felt the sting of being on the receiving end of such misunderstandings, or maybe you are currently navigating the treacherous waters of a cross-cultural relationship. Whatever your situation, know that you are not alone. Drawing from my own experiences, I am compelled to offer some words of advice to those who are willing to listen. And so, I implore you to take heed of the following tips, for they may just be the key to unlocking a successful and fulfilling relationship with someone from another culture.
Navigating Intercultural Relationships: Tips for Building Strong Bonds
Tip number one: food. It is a universal truth that food is an integral part of every culture. It evokes memories of home, of childhood, of belonging. Sharing a meal with someone from another culture can be a truly enriching experience, one that can create a bond that transcends socioeconomic differences. However, it is important to approach this experience with an open mind and a respectful attitude. Do not make faces of disgust or disapproval, for that may be misconstrued as a slight against one’s culture. Instead, show grace and appreciation for the opportunity to break bread together.
Tip number two: learn and share. It is easy to fall into the trap of romanticizing love and ignoring the complexities of cultural differences. To truly connect with someone from another culture, it is essential to learn about and appreciate their interests and values. What is important to your partner? Their family back home, the politics of their country, the sports they enjoy, the nonprofits they support, the music they relish in private. By taking an interest in these things, you not only deepen your understanding of your partner’s culture but also strengthen your bond.
Tip number three: religion and spirituality. This can be a tricky subject to navigate, but it is one that cannot be ignored. Regardless of your personal beliefs, it is important to recognize the significance of religion and spirituality in many cultures. It provides a platform for individuals to share in something greater than themselves, aligning common goals and values. By acknowledging and respecting your partner’s beliefs, you create a space for understanding and loving one another in a way that transcends individual desires and fosters a sense of community.
The journey of cross-cultural relationships is not for the faint of heart. It is a treacherous path fraught with obstacles and hurdles that can trip up even the most seasoned traveler. But those who dare to venture forth with an open mind and a willingness to learn will find that the rewards are immeasurable. Breaking bread together is just the beginning. It is through sharing interests and respecting each other’s beliefs that true bonds are forged. Those who have experienced the joys and tribulations of cross-cultural relationships understand that it is the differences that make us stronger, not the similarities that make us complacent. So I ask you, dear reader, to share your thoughts and experiences with me. We all have a guru within us, waiting to impart wisdom and guidance to those who seek it. Let us embark on this journey together, for it is only through understanding and empathy that we can truly connect with one another, despite our differences.

Universal Ground
Longchenpa on Universal Ground and Universal Ground Consciousness
The relationship of foundational consciousness and non-awareness is thus clear in these terms – non-awareness undergrids the very possibility of samsaric existence, and the foundational consciousness attempts to provide a model for how that basic lack of awareness can serve as a working basis for other emotions, cognitive acts, and personal continuity over many lifetimes. The other three dimensions of the universal ground are a natural extension offering details on how this unconscious substratum determines the health of one’s life world, shapes emotional and cognitive details across time, and constitutes one’s bodily struc- ture. It does this primarily through acting as a repository for the trace impressions of past and present activities and emotions, and then furthermore acting as the operational basis for those trace impressions to subsequently ripen into active proclivities influencing present and future cognition, emotion, and activity. Yet how do these fundamental layers of unconscious processes relate to other unconscious dimensions in human beings described as divine, yet in ordinary existence equally far removed from introspection, reflexive awareness, and deliberate intention?
In order to assess this question, we must examine the standard Great Perfection distinction between the terms “universal ground” (kun gzhi; alaya) and the “uni- versal ground consciousness” (kun gzhi’i rnam shes; alayavijñana), a distinction Longchenpa locates in Indian Yogacara literature. He cites a Bodhisattvabhumi passage which defines the “universal ground” as “non-conceptuality uninvolved with objects” and the “universal ground consciousness” as “non-conceptuality involved with objects” (Longchenpa 1973b, vol. 1, 85b.2). He also cites Sthiramati’s commentary to the Mahayana-sutralakkara, where he characterizes the “universal ground” as the overall basis for the accumulation of karma in the manner of their house, while the “universal ground consciousness” is that which “opens up the space...for the increase, amassing, decline, and so on of these karmic forces” (84.5). Longchenpa himself describes the universal ground consciousness as the “unceasing brightness and clarity” of the universal ground’s radiation, such that the former signifies how the latter diffuses outwards to oper- ate as the other seven aspects of typical consciousness-activity (Longchenpa 1971a, vol. 3, 120.1ff.). This subtle distinction, however, is of exceptional impor- tance when one considers its broader discursive context within the Seminal Heart’s central interest in cosmogony and divine creation stemming from pri- mordial cognition. The tradition posits an original, divine ground termed “the ground of all” (kun gyi gzhi ma), which in its contracted form leads us back to a “universal ground” (kun gzhi). This results in a fundamental ambiguity that extends throughout the system, namely whether “ground of all” with its cosmogonic primordiality signifies all of samsara and nirvaja, or simply all of samsara. Despite Longchenpa’s following the latter interpretative trajectory in The Treasury of Words and Meanings (Longchenpa 1983c), the term “primordial”(ye, ye don) typically signifies the transcendent dimension of a Buddha and nirvaja, whether referring to a Buddha’s knowledge as “primordial knowing” (ye shes) or describing the cosmogonic base as a “primordial ground” (ye gzhi). Indeed, Longchenpa’s own corpus elsewhere explicitly uses the term “universal ground” to signify the innately pure primordial ground of all reality (Longchenpa 1983d, 89.7).
This divine ground is explicitly identified as “a nucleus of enlightened movement” (de bzhin gshegs pa, S: tathagatagarbha) or Buddha-nature. While presented as a cosmogonic ground which ontologically precedes cyclic existence (saÅsara) and transcendence (nirvaja), it is also explicitly located within the human interior as an ongoing, deeply unconscious dimension. This dimension is engaged in a constant efflorescence that gives rise to both saÅsara and nirvaja, leading to the stock formulation of a single ontological ground leading to two paths, that is, interpretative trajectories resulting in a bifurcation of life-worlds. The ground itself is described as threefold – empty essence, radiant nature, and all-pervasive compassion – in a model explicitly based upon a Buddha’s three Bodies: the empty Reality Body (dharmakaya), the radiant Enjoyment Body (sambhogakaya), and the all-pervasive Emanational Body (nirmanakaya). The cosmogonic movement from the ground’s deep interiority and potential into man- ifestation is modeled after the description of the divine creation of pure lands, a process bound up with the emergence of Enjoyment Bodies and their majdalas out of the non-manifest matrix of the Reality Body. The completely interior and pure “ground” is described as undergoing a process of exteriorization and rupture resulting in this scenario, from which two paths (lam) extend: a path leading to enlightened transcendence (nirvaja) by means of the cognitive capacity recog- nizing the appearances as self, and a path leading to distorted cyclic existence (samsara) by means of a lack of such recognition. The former path is described as the mode of freedom (grol tshul) of the primordial Buddha All Good (kun tu bzang po, S: samantabhadra), while the latter path is described as the mode of deviation (‘khrul tshul) of sentient beings (sems can, S: sattva). Furthermore, the latter path is termed “non-awareness,” which is here identified as the “primordial universal ground,” that is, the basic unconscious matrix for animate life in samsara.
The inception of samsara and nirvaja is thus described as emerging in a bifurcated epistemological scenario in which an emergent cognitive capacity (shes pa, S: vijñana) develops out of a deeply unconscious state to newly encounter a lighting-up or appearances (snang ba). The bifurcation hinges on what is termed “recognition,” namely the reflexivity involved in this process of manifestation. In the case of transcendence, the interior and unconscious ground now infused with reflexive self-awareness becomes the Reality Body, the matrix of a divine creativity constituting the Buddha’s prolific forms and activity. In the case of deviation, the ground remains, albeit in a state of deep unconscious latency, while a derivative cognitive formation termed the “universal ground con- sciousness” becomes the operational matrix of a distorted and tainted creativity constituting a sentient being’s embodiment and activities. In other words, Buddha-nature is the cosmogonic ground, and the Reality Body is its transforma- tion with reflexive self-awareness, while the universal ground consciousness is a derivative unconscious matrix embedded within the even more deeply uncon- scious pure ground. In this manner, the relationship of the Buddha-nature/Reality Body and fundamental consciousness – wisdom and ignorance – is between two distinct unconscious domains in the body and mind that account for creation and agency beneath conscious reflection. The universal ground literally dissolves into the always already extant Buddha-nature, which then becomes an awakened Buddha. Thus foundational consciousness does not transform into a new type of unconscious process or cognitive constellation, but rather dissipates so that deeper movements can emerge into being, perception and emotions directly out- side of its meditating and distorting influences.

~lwj astrological birth chart analysis~
hi!!! i was thinking about lan zhan’s birthday, and i got a bit curious as to what his birth chart would look like. i did a lot of guessing and interpreting here- i know there’s no official canon year in our history that this all takes place, and that its reaaaaaally difficult to get outer/generational planets right that far back in time. i did my best. enjoy!!
Aquarius Sun
The Aquarius Sun is, above all else, an individual. They strive for their independence and freedom, in whatever form that may take. Ruled by Uranus, they value and look forward to drastic changes and seek to differ from others around them. They are skilled in dealing with facts, logic, and ideas. They have razor sharp intuition, and they usually learn to rely on it early in their lives. Because of this, the Aquarius tends to stick to their beliefs on what is right and what is wrong, and usually cannot be swayed from this, unless shown concrete evidence to the contrary. The combination of these traits create an engaged spirit that seeks to maintain an emotional distance from whatever, or whoever, they are dealing with. This emotional distance is key in defining the core essence of Aquarius- they use it to attempt to transcend the mundane, the drama, and those annoying emotions they can’t seem to get rid of. An Aquarius may face challenges that arise resulting from their detachment, and their struggles with emotion and working with others. This may make them come across as unemotional, rigid, or cold. However, they’re motivated to learn as much as they can with the world around them, and use their principles and intuition as a guide for exploring the universe. They deal in the abstract, and they are fundamentally unconventional, seeking to push boundaries and fight for the social causes they believe in. Keywords to Aquarius Sun: eccentric, independent, detached, curious, intuitive, self reliant
Scorpio Moon
Scorpio Moons are mysterious and intense. Ruled by both Pluto and Mars, they are passionate, and in search of the deeper truths behind something’s first appearance. This parallels themselves, and the truth of their emotions. Beneath all of the first impressions you get from them, there lies the truth of their inner world: sensitive to emotions around and within them, vulnerable (especially to dark mindsets), and the fear of expressing themselves and all these secrets that have been bubbling beneath the surface. All of these things they deal with makes them crave emotional purges- letting out all these powerful emotions, anger, jealousy, pain, love, compassion, in bursts because they just can’t handle keeping it to themselves anymore. They’re secretive, and it’s a defense mechanism. Keywords to Scorpio Venus: intense, sensual, moody, secretive
Capricorn Mercury
They are typically very cautious in what they say. Ruled by Saturn, they are detail oriented but they know what the big picture is. They’re good at organizing their thoughts and activities. They are conservative in what they say, and they are high focused and goal oriented. They do get irritated when too much information comes their way, because they aren’t given the time they need to process that information. Keywords to Capricorn Mercury: focused, intelligent, analytical
Capricorn Venus
People with Venus in Capricorn typically like to impress people with their intelligence and drive to succeed. Ruled by Saturn, love is very serious to them, and they might feel like they need to be at a stable, independent place in their lives to be able to settle down with someone. Behind their “cool” demeanor, they are warm and emotional people. They may be shy, but they show their feelings through their actions. They say what they mean, and how they appear to others is very important to them. To feel safe and secure, they often need to have a sense of financial security or wealth, so they may choose someone who is well off to be with. There is something soulful about someone with a Capricorn Venus, and it is even more intriguing because of their sense of privacy. Keywords for Capricorn Venus: quiet, ambitious, analytical
Leo Mars
They are extremely proud people. They tend to be quite competitive, and they do not accept compromise, or failure. They play the game of life by their own rules. They put their all into everything, including their ego, so they can get quite defensive when provoked or humiliated. Leo Mars people are naturally born leaders. They strive to succeed in any and every single thing they do. They are skilled performers, and deep inside themselves, they have a need to create. They act with their heart. However, their pride is their downfall, aided only by the high standards they set for themselves. They love being the center of attention, in more ways than one. They do take care of their partner’s needs; however, their attention is focused most on their own pleasure. They crave the excitement of a new relationship, and all the affection and love that comes along with it. They can get jealous easily, and they may “test” their partner’s loyalty. They become easily irritated with disloyalty or dishonesty. Keywords for Leo Mars: direct, dramatic, vivacious, proud
Sagittarius Jupiter
The Jupiter in Sagittarius placement creates a powerful urge to travel, to expand your knowledge and learn about other cultures. They typically can come across as detached, friendly, and non-judgemental in passing. They seek to expand wisdom, and to teach. Learning is their highest calling in life. This is a Sagittarius Jupiter’s greatest strength, but it can also cause them to come across as a know-it all, or rather aloof. Typically, not always, they may be active, and seek competition.
Taurus Saturn
Those with their Saturn in Taurus seek tangible challenges and answers from their world. Saturn, as a generational planet, shows our limitations and challenges, and Taurus deals in the sensual, the tangible, and the desire for material pleasures. This can manifest as collection of things they deem beautiful, such as art, clothing, food, or just money. They can feel intimately tied to their physical world, and weaknesses can be found in hoarding goods valuable to them. Taurus brings this planet reliability, stability, and determination.
Libra Uranus
Another generational placement, Libra channels Uranus’s desire for transcendence and enlightenment into art. They may be musically gifted, or particularly literate or artistic. Their deep imagination gives way for an incredibly sense for detail, and intuition. They tend to be restless, and dislike others intruding into their private lives. Uranus in Libra is uniquely prone to domestic troubles, such as the loss of their romantic partner. They can be unconventional, and are often characterized as anarchic. The balance and reasoning they bring to this planet brings changes to the traditional definitions of law, norms, and relationships.
Scorpio Neptune
Another generational placement, the Scorpio in Neptune individual is deeply emotionally spiritual. They can find physical intimacies and pleasures as spiritual connections, and seek explanation for the truths they seek about the universe in the esoteric, or the occult. They search beyond reason- they delve into the inner workings of the soul to define the world around them. They often find inner conflict in their selfish desires and fantasies, and their overwhelming tendency for self-sacrifice.
Cancer Pluto
As Pluto represents hidden power and the deep psyche, Cancer gives meaning to this with emotional connection. Every emotion is incredibly intense, and a lot of inner conflict comes from their efforts to control their emotions. They are protective of those they love, and because of this, they seek to always be one step ahead of all their troubles in order to protect themselves and those they love. They find their purpose in their family and their relationships. They may also find themselves clinging to their childhood belief systems, even when this conflicts with what they find they desire in the present.

OKAY LETS CHAT. lets address the elephant in the room. yes, canonically, mdzs is not set in any time in our history. im just a hoe for astrology and i pieced together a relative year based on historical context given throughout canon, 423 AD. already a bit shakey on the timing of things, but also, because this is soooo far back, i did not factor in retrogrades for outer planets. technically speaking, since this is so far back in history, retrogrades become a bit insignificant when calculating for planets like jupiter, that switch signs every year and can retrograde several times a year. oh fuckin well.
BUT IS THIS NOT THE MOST LAN WANGJI THING YOUVE EVER SEEN??????
let’s dive right in, shall we?
We all know homeboy’s an aquarius sun, but like come on. “value and look forward to drastic changes and seek to differ from others around them” ???? “skilled in dealing with facts, logic, and ideas” ???? “emotional distance is key in defining the core essence of Aquarius- they use it to attempt to transcend the mundane, the drama, and those annoying emotions they can’t seem to get rid of. An Aquarius may face challenges that arise resulting from their detachment, and their struggles with emotion and working with others. This may make them come across as unemotional, rigid, or cold. however, they’re motivated to learn as much as they can with the world around them, and use their principles and intuition as a guide for exploring the universe” ???? fuck yeah my dude.
having a scorpio mood explains his unsettling demeanor that we experience through wwx’s 15 year old eyes. Not only is he quiet and rule abiding, but he’s ~mysterious~. he’s secretly brimming with enough feelings to make rambunctious wwx shit himself. not only that, but he’s emotionally constipated!!! we love to see it. WE ALSO LOVE TO SEE EVIDENCE OF THE EMOTIONAL INTENSITY THAT MAKES WWX WANT TO CRY EVERY TIME LWJ TELLS HIM HE LOVES HIM OKAY BYE
cap mercury- reserved, brief, to the point. all in character.
cap venus- warm and emotional behind a cool demanor???? If that aint him???? soulful, intentional, and a rich motherfucker. yes yes yes.
OKAY THE LEO MARS MAKES THE MOST SENSE. Everyone’s so suprised to see him tell wwx to shut up and get out so many times in the beginning of wwx’s stay at the cloud recesses. But leo mars really does give him quite the temper. He’s got a bit of an ego, even if he doesn’t show it all that often. he needs to be the best at everything he does- and he is. he’s truly hanguang-jun. also in novel canon, he a dom top. and we love him for it. he knows what he wants. he knows how to get it.
okay normally i don’t put much thought into outer/generational planets, but because this is a “historical” tale, i think it’s important to put his personality into context. of course, none of these planets have an incredibly direct hand into the personality, they more give context and the foundations of the personality given your generation. first off- the sagittarius jupiter is actually so true?? he shows up in the chaos, he gets into the thick of conflicts all over the place. of course he does, how else is he supposed to learn? even if he’s quiet and doesn’t show all the character development he goes through, it’s there. there’s a reason why after wwx comes back to life, that he doesn’t really go after him for demonic cultivation. it’s because lwj seeked out places that put him out of his comfort zone (finding wwx in the burial grounds after the sunshot campaign to see all the wens, following wwx after his massacre), that really taught him the lesson “what is right? what is wrong? what is black? what is white?” let me tell you, if he just stayed in the cloud recesses year round, he would not have arrived at that conclusion. and he sure as hell comes off as aloof. if you don’t think so, ask su she.
we don’t really get to see much of lwj’s domestic life in the thick of the plot, so it’s hard to say how accurate his saturn sign is. all i know is that he’s reliable and stable as hell.
doing research on the libra uranus placement cracked me the fuck up. musically gifted? check? your romantic partner dying and leaving you alone? check. unconventional relationships? check. that last one i really want to stress. being “cutsleeve” in that historical context is very unconventional. also, given the romantic relationship that has been modelled to him in his most formative years, a stable, healthy relationship with good communication is rather unconventional. for sure, he challenges laws, norms and relationships throughout the cultivation world.
the scorpio neptune i also found really fascinating. as painful as it is for us to admit, for a long time, lan zhan’s desires and love for wwx can be interpreted as a bit selfish. not inherently!!! just that it was unrequited, and especially since wwx screamed at him in a cave as he lay dying and lwj just told him over and over again that he loved him. (wanna stress!! love is not inherently selfish!!! context!!!) he also has an undeniable tendency to self sacrifice. all the fucking time. he just don’t stop. every opportunity that he can take to punish himself for not adhering to his childhood standards, he physically punishes himself. he blames himself for a shitton of things that’s happened to him. and this is a major conflict for his character development. i also find it interesting that the scorp neptune gives an interest in the esoteric/occult. given that this is a fantasy world where he gets to go kill monsters and demons, i find this very interesting.
cancer pluto. hoooooo booyyyyy. he sure as hell tries to control his emotions. from what we, the audience, can see, he seems to have a very intense emotional world. this is only proven further by his scorpio moon and neptune. his dedication to waiting for his deceased mother for a month after she passed, his continued attachment to his uncle despite lqr’s devout hatred of the love of his life, and his dedicated attachment to wwx, this seems pretty true to me. and if anyone tries to tell me he doesnt cling to his childhood belief systems despite their contrast to his current desires, idk what ill do. Ill have to reread and rewatch everything.
oh boy!!! this was actually so much fun. if i got anything wrong, lmk!! ill make edits!! bc i did this all within an hour in the middle of the night, completely dehydrated lol
thanks for reading this far!!!

Here is the problem: technology is producing profound insights in the realm of politics, but the realm of politics is succumbing to deep ignorance about technology. Theorists of technology are becoming the most significant sources of political ideas; theorists of politics are becoming incapable of understanding significant technological ideas.
Unschooled in perceiving the development of digital technology for what it is, political leaders now frenetically throw around appeals to concepts—slogans, “values,” “ideals”—that have come unglued from the reality formed by our surrounding digital environment. The concepts being developed by leading technologists, by contrast, are gaining serious influence over political life despite their departure from “mainstream” concepts because of how strongly rooted they are in perceptions formed by the digital environment.
These two destabilizing trends raise (significantly) two linked issues, one more abstract and one more particular. First, is the Western political tradition obsolete? Second, is America, because of its regime, worth the trouble of trying to preserve?
…
The key is that the content of those broadcasts mattered less to the structure of social order than the context that was televisual (and other electric) media itself. The context was the rule of the human imagination. Those most expert at creating ethical dreams for mass broadcast and adoption made up the institutional elite, both in private and public life: the spheres of influence which smeared together and produced a global Western ruling class.
This class, psychologically and socially deeply formed by the electric environment, was emotionally and scientifically certain that the technological progress they superintended would result in the consummation or perfection of their globalized environment. This context decisively shaped the content of what we might call “televisual ethics.” In this way was the medium itself the “message.”
…
Now we all could be our own TV hosts, channels, even our own broadcast networks. The internet would enable the televisual medium to perfect the “togetherization” of everyone—productively, peacefully, and amicably. Everyone would become “friends,” in the new idiom, although really the idea was much closer to the more loaded phrase invoked by electric age idol John Lennon in the televisual anthem “Imagine”—“a brotherhood of Man.”
These democratizing and capitalizing features of perfect televisual rule would consecrate a durable new relationship between rulers and ruled. The ambitions of H.G. Wells, who had prophetically dreamed up a postwar utopia where religion, family, and the nation-state had been replaced by a virtuous post-political elite of imagineering scientists of ethics, would at last be achieved.
Of course, this is not what happened. And in all likelihood it is the opposite of what is yet going to happen. But why? The view of the imagineers and their faithful audiences is that the machines they built to produce utopia were abused by all-too-ordinary people, who are still plagued by the disgusting and dispiriting flaws that have always hamstrung human beings.
…
We united the dreams and the tools that would end history—and these monsters used them to restart it again! This vengeful and wounded cry now shows up constantly in the backlash within tech itself to social media. Making the world safe for democracy at the end of the First World War had failed; making the world safe for elitism at the end of the Second World War also failed; and remaking the world through a fusion of the two at the end of the Cold War has now failed as well. No wonder the increasingly naked desire today is to make the world safe for bot-ocracy. The task of harmoniously ordering humanity has at last been shown to outstrip even the capabilities of the most ethical humans with the best tools; only the bots and the algorithms, perfectly expert in allocation at scale, can save us now.
But such a vision of using robots to realize human dreams is itself an electric-age idea pushed to terminal extremes. Digital shapes us in such a way as to disenchant even this ultimate wager of the imagination. After all, digital technology does not shape our perceptions and sensibilities in accordance with the rule and measure of the human imagination, but in accordance with the supremacy of machine memory. Rather than the psychedelic sensory trip of televisual life wherein each individual is ethically moved to do as they dream, digital forms us all to experience life in the context of an inescapable and comprehensive architecture of recordation and recollection: an ultimate Archive of all the types of things.
…
What, then, is replacing the obsolescing rule of the human imagination and the institutional elite that ordered the globalized West by “perfecting” that rule? Now, the hallmarks of communication within digital’s archival architecture shape our psyches/souls: think identity, history, biography. These preoccupations of distinctly human memory sharply reveal the fundamental binary in digital life between people and bots: we visible, incarnate, living beings versus invisible, disincarnate, animate yet not living beings. Notice that the ultimate robots in digital life are not hardware machines doing parkour and slipping on banana peels. The ultimate robots are much less like humans than—yes—angels: whether in fear or fascination, Americans now wonder how many of these energy-entities can dance on the head of a pin. Even if the operations of the machines being arrayed to rule us reveal themselves in specific places, these invaders we encounter have ceased to exist in physical space.
And so there are those among the super-intelligent refugees from the sinking Titanic of the televisual elite who wish to go even beyond the “ultimate” electric-age vision of creating bots pure and powerful enough to rule us with perfect master virtue. Tapping into both psychedelic drugs and the deepest vein of gnostic thought, which transcends all eras of technological development since the development of the alphabet, these digital natives formed by terminal televisual technology want to build machines that, angel-like, bear us “heavenward,” such that we can at last overcome our wretched imperfect humanity—merging with both our ultimate dreams and our ultimate tools to become as gods. As the likes of “Singularity” evangelists Ray Kurzweil or Eliezer Yudkowsky and their followers demonstrate, the project is not simply to radically extend our lifespan or eliminate all disease on Earth (endeavors top technologists are already actively funding). It is to shed the body and achieve immortality as pure consciousness. Within Silicon Valley, these gnostic cults of transhumanism, and their conscious conception of queer polyamory, pharmaceuticals, and psychedelics as stations en route to the full and final emancipation of human imagination, are well known. There are, as they say, many such cases.
And yet there is one more group of note among top technologists, who reject all televisual visions and see in digital the retrieval of premodern forms that restore true pride of place to the best of the human. While, given the outsized goals and frenetic energies of the prevailing elite, this group may now seem the most anodyne or marginal, it is, in some key respects, the most pivotal of the bunch to America’s future, as we will see in a moment.
…
The problems with American political theory extend well before the onset of the digital age. By the mid-1990s, the discipline was divided into roughly three schools. A “communitarian” school, oriented around social values, opposed the “libertarian” one focused around descriptive and prescriptive individualism. A “critical theory” school more or less opposed the other two on partly normative and partly methodological grounds. Critical theorists, left largely to their own devices for reasons of political correctness and disciplinary opacity, grew deeply recondite in its doctrines and language yet ever more influential. Political theory schools as a whole grew more ideologically fixed, however: the social wing became dominated by Rawlsianism, while the most powerful faction at the individualist pole was Straussianism.
…
Thus American political theory “developed” into a position of almost complete irrelevance during the 2000s. Unable to say anything that made a meaningful contribution to American life regarding events that ranged from 9/11 and the financial crisis to the Arab “Spring” and the rise of China, the discipline largely collapsed into a discredited rump Straussian faction, a school fundamentally composed of economists, and a metastasizing blob of critical theorists spreading the same vanguard radicalism as “studies” professors and students in other departments.
…
And here is the crucial twist. While Jaffa’s disciples surely agreed that the supremacy of America’s regime by the standard of justice had to do with the benefits accruing to its people from its unique and historic philosophical reconciliation of the nettlesome theological-political problem, that fateful achievement bore such significance because of its role in arresting—yet never destroying—the iron logic of the cycle of regimes. Setting aside the many ins and outs of the details, Jaffa’s advancement on Strauss was simply to establish that the question of the importance to humanity of America’s prospective projections into the world was secondary to the question of the importance to humanity of America’s continued existence in the world. That is, both for America and humanity as a whole, the constant, foundational political directive for Americans is to preserve the American regime, not to imagineer a global one.
…
These implications instruct digital technologists that their fate and freedom, and, we might say, their fecundity, are more stubbornly entangled than it seems at first blush with America’s own. Obviously, for Americans themselves, the price of regime collapse will be steep and awful to bear. But in political terms, the steepest price Americans—and ex-Americans—will have to pay will be the reopening of the Pandora’s Box of alternate regimes, and the free play of harsh and unforgiving alternatives to the pursuit of justice according to natural right. Whether at home or abroad, they are likely to struggle even to find a hospitable basis for new foundings of new regimes, even ones considerably more fraught or fragile than America’s today.
…
What is radicalizing younger Americans on the “Right” and “Left”—and blurring those categories together—is not electric-age content activation so much as the techno-environmental transformation of their perceptions and sensibilities. This point is essential to grasp because it indicates that the distress facing the American regime is different in kind from mere shifts in battle lines among factions. In the digital environment the viability, the practicability, of the American regime is coming into question for reasons that go much deeper than “ideology” or “bias” or “opinion” or indeed any kind of political outworking of the human imagination. Rather than a matter of what-if, it is a matter of what-is.
To be sure, on the “Left,” the imagination is working overtime in the vanguard movement to replace the American regime with a normatively queer, post-white, and ultimately posthuman gnostic technocracy. But even this ultimate expression of the politics of delusion is attracting so many adherents in Silicon Valley and across the Woke Archipelago because digital is so furiously disenchanting all moderate or “basic” fantasies. Basic fantasies are “cringe” and “cheese,” pathetically doomed and low-status efforts to find stable refuge for one’s identity in lived-out visions that digital reduces to “dead memes” and humiliating clichés.
Whiteness is evil, but deprogram the evil, and whiteness is empty—hollow, meaningless, obsolete. We already see the same experience at work with maleness: deprogram the evil that defines it, according to the vanguard Left, and what is left is a disgusting, disenchanted neuter. Take away fatherhood (patriarchy), priesthood (molestation), military or law enforcement service (racism), business leadership (capitalist greed), and what is left is a civilization of post-boys, autogynephilic, cripplingly awkward, knowingly purposeless, well aware that games and gaming are rapidly sinking into low status despite the fleeting celebrity of the world’s very top gamers, occasionally ready to throw themselves at the feet of the most extreme possible fantasies—such as the fantasy that obeying the call of the chan to murder a host of interchangeable bystanders in some way operationalizes yet another interchangeable “manifesto.”
A spectrum is haunting online—the spectrum of autism. Faced with an endless barrage of disenchantment, young Americans increasingly conform to the architectonic attitudes and sensibilities of the Archive in order to survive digital life. The autistic sensibility is becoming normative on the internet: from virtuosity in pattern recognition (which Marshall McLuhan traced to immersive information overload) to strategic retreat from the exposure of commitment, connection, and community. To be “Aspie” or “spectrumy” is to be that most precious of things online—readily identifiable as safe to pass through the endless checkpoints of internet life. For those unable or unwilling to adopt that form, there are now nearly endless medicalized identities to adopt instead. There is no more grievous insult to hurl at someone online than to deny them their right to medicalize their identity—and the right to the medicine that sustains it.
…
Our political class is rushing towards complete disconnection from our technologists and the generations of Americans they and their tools are forming in profoundly new ways. Rising generations online already assume the political class is simply irrelevant. Liberals are in relatively less trouble, but only insofar as they have already surrendered their agency and their identity to whatever their ruling vanguard commands them to be. Conservatives, unwilling to make that deal, are generally recoiling in castrated snobbery before what they believe to be a resurgence of reactionary loutishness at once too horrible to countenance and too marginal to ever possibly stoop to take seriously.
The reaction on the online “Right” to conservatives and liberals alike is therefore to dismiss them as denizens of “clown world”—NPCs, non-player characters, from whom one can expect nothing but dead memes and fatal distractions from the task of carving out a viable existence worth the trouble and pain of living. With a few very minor and contingent exceptions, all of the mainstream strains of conservatism and liberalism, even some of the more ostensibly “heterodox” ones, are now considered completely obsolete and defective—that is, disenchanted fantasies that give no life in a digital age.
As the Rights political class has retreated toward oblivion, technologists and digital natives looking for a viably human escape from the apocalyptic bonfire of the fantasies have begun to coalesce—as hinted above—around a freshly pre-modern notion of restoring human excellence to its pride of place. In short, the field of political thought that shellshocked conservatives have all but abandoned is being reoccupied by Right technologists developing an anthropology for the digital age. They vary. There is more than one way, at least in theory, to cut one’s losses and escape clown-world America before it’s too late. But if anything unites them, it is the suitably digital sensibility that our biological inequality is what makes humans human, what makes human excellence possible, and what can make human excellence into a way of life. Digital reopens the question of what makes human life distinctive, and the general answer reverberating through the digital Right is our genes.
…
Another school of thought, however, notably shies away from the teched-up version of the political philosophy of human excellence—in this sense, following Nietzsche, who assuredly did not want to turn over the quest for surpassing our “all too human” nature to the scientists, whose immense courage in their will to truth buckled at the final test, confronting the possibility that “truth is a woman.”
This is the intellectual zone peopled, as Michael Anton recently observed, by Bronze Age Pervert and his followers. The living online legend, known as BAP by those in the know, speaks in his self-published Bronze Age Mindset to those disenchanted by equality “as propagandized and imposed in our day: a hectoring, vindictive, resentful, leveling, hypocritical equality that punishes excellence and publicly denies all difference while at the same time elevating and enriching a decadent, incompetent, and corrupt elite,” as Anton puts it.
…
And yet, the current configuration of America and the world in the digital age raises distinct complications even for ethically pure BAPists. In fact, similar complications arise for every strain of generally Right-inflected anthropological politics arising from the perceptions of technologists and digital natives, because the question is simple but nettlesome: how much of your life are you willing to stake on the possibility that no viable life worth living in the digital age is possible if the American regime is not preserved?
There are potent signs that a tiny few may be able to take what Curtis Yarvin calls the “clear pill” and punt on the question of America’s preservation, relocating to quieter (or louder) zones perhaps more nurturing or forgiving of men rethinking and retrieving human excellence. It is unclear how BAPpy it really is to take a chance on abandoning America to gnostic Left posthumanists with the tools and wealth of Silicon Valley at their disposal. And it is not at all evident that technologists appreciative of the new geneticism are best off rolling the dice on a world where the American regime has lapsed.
…
For it is this regime that captures in its system of justice the political facts of our anthropology, and throws light on the limits beyond which human excellence for its own sake cannot justly be pushed. The power, reach, and safe harbor for excellence that our regime continues to provide—with a rare measure of freedom—are precious advantages not readily obtained elsewhere. The most powerful enemies of freely flourishing natural human lives still find in America their greatest and strongest adversary, and while that is a credit to flesh-and-blood Americans, it is a consequence of the structure of our regime. The vengeful imagineers and gnostic posthumanists in America, whom the technologists of the new Right rightly seek freedom from, will gain tremendous new powers if they have their way and destroy it.
Similarly, for those terrified of a new digital reactionary movement bent on breeding barbarian Übermench, or simply of street gangs of teched-up fascist LARPers, the inescapable truth is that only those expert in the theory and practice of the American regime can lead those wavering in the wilds of online back to a salutary patriotism. Established liberals and conservatives have lost that capability, and the fanatical woke vanguard of the ruling class will never be able to gain it.
America’s regime is still urgently worth the trouble of preserving, despite—or, really, because of—the harrowing totality of the digital transformation, and the unprecedented disenchantment it brings.

Moon’s theology was designed to maximize worker output
A Korean Evangelistic Movement in the West
Professor James A. Beckford 1973
... The radical novelty of this group [the Unification Church, now known as the FFWPU] lies in both its peculiar teachings and in its social organization, but perhaps most strikingly is the way in which it effects a conciliation between ostensibly incompatible teachings and principles of organization. For the teachings combine strands of Karmic Buddhism with Christian messianism, spiritualistic metaphysics with Judaic millennialism, and biblical truth with esoteric revelation, while its social organisation combines communal living with autocratic control. ...
... The conjunction of Christian messianic millennialism and schematic meta-physics [polarity, three stages of growth, four-position foundation, parallels of history, etc.] in the set of Unification Church beliefs described above does not amount to a major novelty on the religious scene of the Western world, for a number of groups have already espoused formally similar views. Yet, the additional complication of a perspective borrowing heavily from spiritualistic traditions serves to give the UC a unique distinctiveness among contemporary religious groups. In Korea, of course, the shamanistic tradition has always been dominant, and nearly all the new religions have effected a synthesis between shamanistic elements and a wide diversity of other inspirations. Indeed, the realm of spiritual matters is of the utmost importance to UC members, and their daily activities evince a heightened awareness of a dimension transcending the ‘everyday’ world. Moon’s Divine Principle teaches that the physical and spiritual worlds are indivisible, and that it is possible for man to develop a special sensitivity to spiritual affairs. The aim of the sincere UC member is accordingly to achieve spiritual perfection during earthly existence as a preliminary to joining the ‘limited number’ of Divine Spirits who will enjoy the fruits of a paradisal existence thereafter. ‘Spiritual’ in this context refers to a person’s attitudes towards, and actions in respect of, God, and ‘spiritual perfection’ means adopting attitudes and behaviour-patterns that reflect a relationship of mutual love with God.
The notion of ‘salvation’ seems inappropriate, therefore, in the UC context, since the opportunity to achieve spiritual perfection arises from the outworking of almost mechanical ‘principles’, and it is the individual’s personal responsibility to improve his own condition.
A further implication of UC belief in the indivisibility of the physical and spiritual realms is that both good and evil spirits are understood to influence the course of everyday events on earth. The allegedly recent upsurge in para-normal phenomena, for example, is said to be partly the result of spirits’ attempts to re-inhabit physical bodies in order to achieve perfection before the time of irrevocable judgement arrives. Thus,
More and more people are speaking in tongues, healing, prophesying, imparting spiritual fire, and performing mighty works at this time. Most, of these are the co-operative ministries of Life-Spirits.5
Since it is believed that Life-Spirits can only establish rapport with people sharing their aims, UC members count themselves an ‘elect on earth’ in a uniquely privileged generation. They therefore link their own specially privileged role with Moon’s divine mission and with the aspirations to perfection of innumerable spirit entities in what they foresee as an imminent period of division.
Illustrative of the strength of interest in spiritualistic matters in the UC is the fact that a highly publicised part of the legitimation for Moon’s claims to messiahship rests upon the evidence of an American spirit-medium. Several publications carry the message of Arthur Ford, ‘a world-known sensitive’ , that Moon was ‘Truth Incarnate...a prophet…who has tremendous spiritual power and also psychic power...who will bridge the gap between the east and west and the past and the future’. Similarly, Moon’s own account of his divine calling describes an intense vision that he experienced at the age of sixteen in which Christ instructed him to complete the mission that He had failed to accomplish 2,000 years before. It is widely believed amongst UC members that Moon still receives revelations direct from God, although he is also thought to be subject to temptations by satanic spirits.
The UC’s explanation of evil is simple and relatively orthodox by most Christian standards: Satan usurped God’s position as the object of man’s affection, thereby-forestalling the realisation of the happiness that God had intended for Adam and his descendants. Moon’s teachings deviate sharply from Christian traditions, however, in regard to the possibility of overcoming evil, for he adopts a position more closely resembling that of Buddhism. Denying that Jesus cancelled the law of ‘an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth’, Moon teaches that man can discharge his debt of evil by acts of ‘physical indemnity or restitution’ such as fasting, taking cold baths, early rising and exceedingly hard work. He explicitly endorses belief in the operation of an inexorable Law of Karma, holding that:
Those who harm or mistreat their brothers will find themselves in the position of being themselves mistreated if they fail to make amends. If they arrive in the spirit world with unpaid debts, they will have to work to assist perhaps the very ones they hurt in order to pay what they owe.6
Conversely, Moon argues that discomfort, dissatisfaction and disappointment are penalties imposed by Satan on those who try to live by God’s Principle, and this frequently serves as a rationalization for all kinds of failure in UC enterprises. The psychological effectiveness of such a theodicy* probably depends heavily on a very real belief in the active interference of spirit beings in human affairs.
[* Theodicy, in its most common form, is an attempt to answer the question of why a good God permits the manifestation of evil, thus resolving the issue of the problem of evil.]
UC beliefs therefore resemble those of many so-called ‘Little Traditions’ in peasant cultures of South Asia through their fusion of karmic laws and demonic contingencies: Moon’s followers explain evil by reference both to ‘inexorable laws of indemnity’ and to the interference of satanic spirits. If this reconciliation between two distinct theodicies appears to rest upon a paradox, then we must agree with Obeyesekere that ‘the paradox is part of the system and integral to it’.7 In fact, receptivity to the influence of local religious traditions is a distinguishing feature of Buddhism in Asia which helps to explain its ability to embrace theoretically incompatible elements of doctrine and thereby to survive as a viable religious form.
Moon’s teachings on the subject of the denouement of God’s plan for human restitution are the most confused parts of the UC’s total body of beliefs; on the one hand, there are predictions of the imminent collapse of all social systems in the last days of God’s battle with satanic forces, but, on the other, there are statements to the effect that mid-twentieth century history is characterized by fruitful patterns of unification in religion, culture, economics and politics. Nevertheless, Moon has unequivocally identified signs that the Second Advent is in process of occurring: victory for the Allies in World War I symbolized the defeat of the satanic forces that had ensnared Adam; Allied victory in World War II symbolized the defeat of the satanic forces that had prevented Christ from accomplishing His mission; finally, the anticipated frustration of the Soviet Union’s alleged plot to bring the entire world under the communist yoke will symbolize the Lord of the Second Advent’s establishment of freedom, and good on earth. ...
... Similarly, the Western groups [of the UC] have no knowledge of the intensively shamanistic character of Tong-il rituals and beliefs in its homeland nor of the harmonious relations that it enjoys with the South Korean government.
1. ‘Tong-il’ is the native Korean title for the movement known in the West as the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World Christianity [or Unification Church, now the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification].

How Can You Be More Creative?
Is it true that some people are more creative than others?
And even if that’s true, can less creative people be more creative?
More importantly, can YOU be more creative?
These are important questions that smart people have been asking for millennia.
So, of course, I’m going to answer them!
But first we need to define creativity:
It’s simple: “The use of imagination or original ideas; the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships, or the like.”
In other words, creative people come up with stuff that’s outside the box, and not just once in awhile, but on a regular basis.
Must be very special, rare people, right?
Not exactly.
In a 1968 study of creativity in children at 5 years old, 98% of them tested at a genius level of creativity.
Yes, almost all children are creative geniuses. It’s not special. It’s normal.
This tells us that almost all of us start out with a whole lot of creativity. It comes as standard equipment. We are creative at a very high level right from the start of life.
And now the bad news:
Just 5 years later, at age 10, the percentage of children that tested at the genius level went down to 30%. A 68% decrease. Yikes!
Sounds like an equipment failure. And it gets worse:
By the age of 15, the percentage of creative geniuses plummeted to 12%.
And even worse:
By the time adults hit 30, only 2% were still creative geniuses!
From creative geniuses to creative idiots in 25 years.
So I don’t think the question should be if we can become more creative, but how did we lose our already natural creativity?
And can we get it back?
Well, here’s how I look at it:
We never lost our innate creativity. But it is suppressed by fears that we learned through our so-called “education.”
Fear of not having the right answer
Fear of doing it wrong
Fear of looking stupid
Fear of failing
Every time you did something creative and it didn’t fit a certain standard or it didn’t work, some “more intelligent” adult told you that you were doing it wrong.
Blame. Shame. Pain.
So to avoid feeling that way, you strived to do it their way, the “right way.” And any creative impulses went right out the door.
And this is true for most of us. We play it too safe to come up with creative ideas.
But creativity is exactly what we need in our life, our business, our marketing.
We need new creative thinking to respond to an increasingly complex and competitive world.
So what do we do?
Well, as I said, the creativity is still there deep inside but layered over by fears of doing something wrong and being disapproved of.
And if those fears dropped away, our innate creative genius would start to shine through again as bright as ever.
Finding creative solutions to marketing problems
You might be trying to figure out how to reach out to a prospective client, fill a workshop, write an article or put together a persuasive proposal.
All of these require creative thinking. You want to come up with some good ideas but you frequently hit a dead because your creative genius is stifled.
Here’s a powerful formula for sparking creative ideas:
Need some ideas but feeling the fear?
Take an aware moment to get yourself here.
Be now, be present, be open, be free
Then let the ideas flow, just let them be.
Don’t force them or judge them and you may find
Your creative genius flows right through your mind.
Now take a break, put the problem aside
And let your subconscious go for a ride.
Then take action, one small step at a time
And before you know it, you’ve touched the divine.
OK, don’t like poetry? Fine. Here’s the same formula in prose:
Get yourself here, present, now. Clear away all the thoughts that are crowding your mind, all the voices that are telling you to find the right solution, and just let the ideas flow without forcing them.
Don’t TRY to be creative. Instead, put in some time looking for ideas, do some online research, and compare different options. Brainstorm possibilities where there are no wrong answers.
Don’t force ideas or judge them too soon. And don’t worry whether they are the right ideas or not at this point. In fact, coming up with absurd or silly ideas can be very helpful.
Then rest – take a break. Don’t think about the problem for some time. Sleep on it. Let your subconscious work on it based on all the ideas you explored earlier.
Finally, come back to the problem freshly and you’ll often find that the best idea emerges without any struggle. Then go into action to organize your idea and make a plan to realize it one step at a time.
That, in a nutshell, is how you can make the creative process work for you.
Do it now. Use this formula to start generating some creative ideas for some problem or challenge you’re currently facing in your business or marketing.
Don’t make it difficult. It’s not. What is difficult (painful and stressful) is holding onto the fear.
Why hold on one second longer?
Cheers, Robert

When I was a student in design school — nearly a decade ago now, — I constantly heard about how designers 'wanted a seat at the table'. All too often, I heard — from my professors, from the practitioners I knew, from the design blogs that I read — that graphic design was relegated to decorating, the styling added on at the end of a process. But a lot has changed in these ten years: today it seems everyone wants to be a designer. Design thinking is sold as a solution to everything from dentistry to death; corporations and cities are hiring Chief Design Officers; Apple's miraculous turnaround — famously ninety days from bankruptcy to the United State's first trillion dollars company — is often attributed to Steve Jobs's emphasis on design; and redesigns — whether its popular apps or corporate logos — are frequently covers in major publications. Design has permeated all areas of culture as all of us are now our own brand managers crafting a careful image across social media. Maybe the general public finally understands — and sees value in — what designers do. So if designers now have that seat at the table, the question becomes: what do we do with it?
In her new book, Design as an Attitude, the noted design writer Alice Rawsthorn attempts to give us a roadmap, providing both a survey of contemporary design practices — making sense of the increasing range of disciplines within the field — and showing alternatives to commercially-driven design. Rawsthorn takes her title from László Moholy-Nagy's seminal book, Vision in Motion, where the polymathic designer writes “designing is not a profession but an attitude” and she argues that attitudinal design is an answer to what designers should do in their newfound position. As Moholy-Nagy defines it:
The idea of design and the profession of the designer has to be transformed from the notion of a specialist function into a generally valid attitude of resourcefulness and inventiveness which allows projects to be seen not in isolation but in relationship with the need of the individual and the community. Ultimately, all problems of design merge into one great problem: ‘design for life.’ In a healthy society, this design for life will encourage every profession and location to play its part since the degree of relatedness to their work gives to any civilization its quality.
Using this as her guide, Rawsthorn gives both a historical and contextual tour of contemporary design from design for social good to emerging practices in human centered design. She casts her net wide. Her subjects range in scale and medium from architecture to user-interface design, speculative design to social good. (In an especially interesting section, Rawsthorn decisively cuts through the tired flat versus skeuomorphic debate pointing out neither is especially better than the other, with both rooted in a nostalgia that fails to imagine new ways to interact with technology.)
In the industrial age, design was standardized and commercialized, elevating it and removing it from the arts and crafts. Attitudinal design, for Rawsthorn, is a post-industrial design practice; one that builds upon and expands outside its historically commercial context to engage in social, political, and cultural issues. Designers now have the resources and tools to work independently, using their skills to wrestle with the challenges in the larger world. But if the book has a fault, it is here: it can already feel dated. Collected and adapted from essays Rawsthorn has written over the last three years for Freize, it can be hard to square her optimism in design with our contemporary moment. There's no mention of Trump or Cambridge Analytica or Brexit or fake news. She glosses over issues of big data or artificial intelligence or the power of Silicon Valley. Are these problems design can solve or are these problems caused by design? She has chapters on race and gender, but most of Rawsthorn's focus is on design for developing countries, climate change, design for disabilities — all important issues that designers must tackle, don't get me wrong — but they are the same problems 'design thinkers' have been talking about for the last decade. All too often design is seen as a universal force for good — design can change the world! — but the consequences are too often ignored. Attitudinal design, then, must wrestle with these consequences, fully aware of the byproducts of our work, both the good and the bad.
Design is an Attitude provides a guide for those of us interested in working outside a traditional commercial, capitalist system. Rawsthorn is a worthy guide tracking the major developments in design practice today, highlighting the ways design has transcended its initial mandate. But we mustn't rest on our laurels — we must continually challenge existing systems and confront the new challenges of our present moment, and the challenges that will arise in the future. We have a seat at the table now; we can't assume our role and our work is automatically good. "Design will only be empowered to play a more prominent and potent role in our lives if it demonstrates that is deserves to do so," Rawsthorn writes in the introduction, "by being deployed wisely and sensitively with the 'generally valid attitude of resourcefulness and inventiveness.'" It's a worthy goal. Are we up for the challenge?

A THIRTEEN YEAR DEVELOPMENT
The reliance on key dates helps one organize historical knowledge. The last couple of postings rely on 1787 – the year the founders wrote and issued the US Constitution – to serve as such a date. This posting incorporates the more popular year, 1776, to conceptualize a range of years, the years in which, according to Daniel Elazar,[1] America’s form of federalism was invented.
That construct, according to Elazar, informs one about how this nation sees its governance and politics in every aspect. In this, this writer disagrees with Elazar. That conceptual role shifted from federalism to natural rights in the years since World War II. This blog has dedicated a lot of space to make that point and is in the midst of providing the historical evidence that it claims backs that argument.
But in terms of the aims this blog is pursuing currently, willingness to see federalism through Elazar’s characterization is helpful, at least as far as understanding what those thirteen years – 1776 to 1787 – generated. In effect, the main development in those years refers to how Americans waned in their view from a confederated union to a federal one; from allegiance to a Continental Congress – a league of sovereign states – to the United States Congress – a federated union with a non-central sovereign arrangement.
This latter set up – the non-central one – occurs when states have areas of sovereign powers (their police powers) and the central or general government has its sovereign powers (its delegated powers such as issuing the nation’s currency). It is a complex ideation of government and of how it is best suited for Americans – federalism is not easy. And part (only part) of the story by which this complexity came about is to look at and understand what happened at the state levels when independence was claimed in 1776.
It turns out that upon “independence,” four colonies set about to draw up their constitutions before the Declaration was even issued. They were New Hampshire, South Carolina, Virginia, and New Jersey. Four more, then states, did so before the year ended: Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and North Carolina. All of the rest wrote a constitution in short order and all, but one ratified their basic laws within sixteen months – Massachusetts took several years to complete the process.
These developments were followed by the drafting of the Articles of Confederation which served to set up the structure of a general government to carry out the Revolutionary War effort from a national perch. That instrument, though, was not ratified until 1781. While this timing was used to upgrade the sovereign statuses of states in the states’ rights arguments in years to come, today the consensus is that all of this – the establishment of the states’, and central government’s sovereignty – was formulated at the same time.
What should be taken into account is that the ambiguities of federal rule, its diverse origins – for example, the number of parties coming together to form this union – were very much in evidence at the beginning. Of little note today, for example, was the role local towns and counties played in the Constitutions’ development and ratification. They just felt they had the right to get involved and express their considered opinions even though they did not really have a legal status to do so. And so, they contributed their unsolicited input.
Here, Elazar offers a very telling summary descriptive statement of how Americans have seen and treated its constitution,
In order to understand the over 200 years of the American federalist experience, we must examine American federalism in the broadest sense of the term – not as inter-governmental relations, as federalism has come to be interpreted from the managerial perspective of the twentieth century; not as a matter of the constitutional distribution of powers between the general and state governments, as the constitutional lawyers are wont to see it; not even as the grand political struggle between the Union and the states which covered the canvas of nineteenth century historians; but as something close to what the French term “integral federalism,” that is to say, as the animating and informing principle of the American political system flowing from a covenantal approach to human relationships.[2]
And in this last aspect – the covenantal approach – the colonial influence, the Biblical-Reformed-Puritan tradition referred to in the preceding postings, provides that foundation as “crucial” in its form and how the various documents – including the US Constitution – were developed, interpreted, and judged.
And to organize these judgements, one is served by looking at these developments through four roots: the political, economic, social, and religious roots. This blog has already reviewed the first root, the political root, by describing the covenantal tradition stemming back to the Mayflower Compact.
The interested reader can trace this development by going through the various foundational documents written between the early 1600s and the late 1700s by the colonists. Repeatedly, in each of the various colonies, this covenantal model is repeated in the drawing up of the constitutional or theoretical frameworks the colonists utilized through the colonial years.[3] In one volume, Donald Lutz presents 80 such documents arranged by each of the colonies. That is, this model transcends the New England area and can be considered simply as how Americans went about establishing their polities.
The road to the Articles of Confederation and then the Constitution can be easily detected – if one can get by the older English language – by reviewing these documents. Of note, the initial documents trace all the way back to the Mayflower Compact of 1620 and one can identify a clear lineage of covenants, compacts, constitutions organizing not only local and state governments but, in one case, an inter-colonial confederation.
These documents not only depended on federal beliefs and values, but also furthered the developments of those beliefs and values. They encouraged a federated populous to form and behave within the entailed moral standards these beliefs and values set forth – of course, not at a hundred percent levels (the colonies were not populated by saints) but to a significant degree. It should be remembered, the demanding frontier environment set as necessary that sort of discipline to be able to survive and even prosper in hostile surroundings.
This blog will proceed in upcoming postings to look at the economic, social, and religious roots from which these founding documents were written. But this might be a good point to make a distinction this blog has pointed out before – it is alluded to earlier in this posting. That is, what is being described in these postings primarily refers to espoused theories of governance – what was held in the ideal realm. While the demands on the colonists were severe, one always needs to allow for a gap between ideals and what is considered “real” or as some might say, “theories-in-use.”[4]
That is to say, more self-centered behaviors – as opposed to the ultraistic ones upon which federation depends – can always be found among any population. The concern of this blogger is that currently, self-centeredness has become the ideal by using the language of the natural rights construct. That language casts self-centeredness as almost patriotic expressions of liberty or freedom. Hence, the need to be reminded that the nation’s basic law was written under the influence of another perspective, i.e., federal theory.

An introduction to classpecting
In the Homestuck fandom, all of the cool kids do what’s called classpecting - figuring out the Mythological role of a given character. The specifics of how this stuff works are vague and there’s a lot of debate on specific topics, and because of that it may be difficult to find a place to start. This introduction will (hopefully) give you an idea of how the Classpect system works, describing everything you need to know, without getting too deep into it!
A Mythological Role, also called a Title and often times referred to as a Classpect, is a combination of a given character’s Aspect and Class, as well as their Lunar Sway, which describes a variety of specific traits unique to them, such as their outlook on reality, the ways they impact the narrative, their general behavioral patterns and even the ways in which they were destined to develop and mature.
Each part of one’s Title has its own role in describing the individual at hand, but it is the way in which all the parts interact with each other that gives enough context to truly understand the bigger picture.
However, even bearers of the same Mythological Role can be vastly different individuals due to the broad and vague definitions of both Aspects and Classes, as well as the unique experience each character has with their respective Class and/or Role as a whole. As such, a given Classpect outside the context of a specific character can be viewed as a collection of traits a character may exhibit, as well as general narrative themes associated with them and the ways in which they may interact with the environment around them, both physical and metaphysical.
In Homestuck, Mythological Titles are awarded to intelligent beings that play one of the iterations of “the Game”: a tool of paradoxical origins presented in the style of an RPG-esque video game meant to enable the creation of new universes while also destroying the home world of the playing team.
The Game transports its players to a pocket dimension of sorts called “the Medium”; in it, players can find many complicated devices and artifacts meant to both allow for the creation of the new universe and also help the players achieve their personal growth and eventual ascension to godhood, every player being given their own unique planet with a quest line to follow.
To help the players beat the Game and grow as individuals, there exists a mechanic known as God-Tiering. By completing a self-sacrificial ritual, a player may attain control over the forces which their Aspect represents through magical powers (though how this manifests is dependent on the Class), as well as become conditionally immortal (someone who has God-Tiered can only die in a heroic way or when they are themselves villainous) and gain the ability to fly.
The Game itself requires colossal effort and cooperation from all of the players to be beaten, players filling specific roles required for the proper completion of all of the objectives, some specific Aspects being absolutely essential to the Game’s core mechanics.
However, only the personal ascension players undergo will be elaborated upon here, as how the Game itself functions and most of the information related to that will not be useful to us.
It is explicitly stated in the comic itself that, in universe, only the players of the Game can possibly have Titles, but the system which governs the distribution of Classes and Aspects is defined and fleshed out enough to be applicable to other mediums. Because of that, trying to figure out one’s Title (classpecting) has become a common practice in the fandom.
As was already stated, a given Title consists of three parts:
1) Aspect
Of the two main parts of any given Mythological Title, the Aspect first and foremost gives us information on which themes will be associated with the character in question.
Each Aspect can be understood as a cluster of closely connected and associated ideas. Some of them are literal, and from one of those an Aspect will derive its name: Time correlates to the literal passing of time, Space - to physical space, etc. However, that is only the most literal definition: each Aspect also has connections to narrative themes, ideas, objects and even traits of character, all of which (or many of which) will be prevalent in the life of an Aspect bearer. For example, Time also has connections to the ideas of heat, music, proaction, change, and so on; thus, a Hero of Time will be closely tied to these ideas, their experiences being shaped by them in one way or another.
Ideas related to an Aspect may be reflected in an Aspect Bearer’s general disposition, their natural state of mind, or even through what medium they perceive the world around them.
Knowing a Hero’s aspect can also help us make quite a lot of assumptions, such as a generalization of how active or passive they are, although it alone can’t give us all the information we would need to understand them as a person, because it is the Aspect bearer’s Class that puts all the aforementioned things into a comprehensible context.
Out of all 12 Aspects, only Time and Space are absolutely essential for completing a standard session the Game, as Space players are responsible for the creation of the Genesis Frog bearing the new universe, while Time players are tasked with maintaining the functionality of the Alpha timeline.
All 12 Aspects are presented in pairs, with opposing Aspects having mutually opposing meanings.
The pairings are as follows:
TIME <==> SPACE
The two Aspects that deal with the physical nature of existence. Other than literal time and space, the things associated with them include general proaction/reaction, destruction/creation, music/art, masculinity/femininity, change/stagnation, heat/cold. They are described in universe as the most active and most passive Aspect of them all, respectively, and have an integral part in beating a session of the Game.
BREATH <==> BLOOD
These two Aspects are also tied to the nature of existence at large, as Breath is thought to represent the ethereal and the disconnect from physicality or objectivity, whilst Blood is in itself objectivity and materialism, but there are other contrasts between them, such as fun/seriousness, freedom/bonds, charismatic/official concepts of leadership and a couple of others.
LIFE <==> DOOM
These Aspects are associated with life/death or suffering, healing/rot, growth/decay, joy/despair, production/consumption and sacrifice, but also royalty and power/poverty and slavery. Where Doom represents rules and limitations, Life represents transcending them, and where Doom represents understanding the suffering of others, Life implies a degree of ignorance towards the fates of others and overindulgence. At the same time, Life is associated with growth and prosperity, as well as the ability to help others achieve it, and Doom is associated with decay and rot, as well as fate and predetermination, fatalism being common among those bound to Doom.
MIND <==> HEART
This pair shows the duality of logic/emotions, thoughts/feelings, impulse/patience, but also of external perceptions of people/their inner selves. It also describes a mind/soul dichotomy. While Heart represents one’s inner self and the struggle one faces to understand it, Mind may be understood as the struggle one faces in being someone other than themselves, be it a social role or a role-model of some kind.
VOID <==> LIGHT
The most prominent contrasts of this pair are those between information/obfuscation, relevance/irrelevance and minor themes of luck/misfortune, as well as literal light/darkness. Similar to Life players, those bound to Light tend to disregard rules and forego traditional boundaries in the pursuit of knowledge or their personal agenda. Those bound to Void, in contrast, often self-censor and rely on the opinion of others a bit too much.
HOPE <==> RAGE
The main themes here are positive emotions/negative emotions, faith/doubt, possibilities/certainties, procreation/murder, as well as minor themes of religion/science. These Aspects are, unlike many believe, not essences of absolute goodness and evil, as Hope can imply delusions and a warped perception of reality based around them, and Rage can be connected to the objective truth and the deconstruction of falsehoods, as well as passion in general.
2) Class
Classes aid in further understanding any individual with a known Title, as one’s Class allows to understand the specifics of one’s relationship with their Aspect.
A Class itself may be understood as a behavioral archetype, with specific verbs attached to it. This Archetype describes the goals an individual may set upon themselves, the means through which they will achieve these goals, as well as the general ways through which they interact with those around them, as well as the world at large.
A Class also describes how one’s Aspect manifests in their life. It provides context to the simple associations one may have with the ideas an Aspect represents. For some, their Aspect is a positive force, and will be reflected in their Class. For others, it is a destructive, hated or confining influence, which is also tied to one’s Class.
The actions associated with Classes also define the ways in which a God-Tiered individual may tap into the well of magical powers granted to them by the Game. A Class that, say, has the verb “destroy” associated with it may conjure their Aspect as a force of raw destruction, as well as destroy that which is tied to their Aspect in the world around them.
Classes, like Aspects, are presented in pairs, but here the pairs are not compiled based on opposing meanings. Instead, Classes are paired under the same general meaning, with the difference being the dichotomy of passive (+) and active (-) Classes. Although most Classes may differ from their pair significantly, this duality of passive/active is always felt, even when a lot of details are unique to specific Classes.
The passive/active alignment describes whether any individual Class is primarily internally or externally oriented, meaning a given pair of Classes will exhibit a contrast of selfishness/selflessness between the Classes paired. In some cases, however, the alignment of passive/active may mean that the influence an individual exerts on reality is literally more or less active or passive, with the destroyer Classes being an example of this.
Which Classes should be paired with which is a popular topic of discussion in the fandom, and one which many have differing opinions on. As such, I will list my pairings here and explain the reasoning behind my choices.
First, I will list the pairings which are canonically confirmed:
BARD (+) <==> PRINCE (-); TO DESTROY
The destroyer Classes. A Prince destroys their Aspect and Bard allows destruction of/destroys through their Aspect.
A Prince comes to despise their Aspect at some point in their life, and seeks to destroy it, both in the world and inside themselves, but at the same time can carry with them prominent motifs of their Aspect and exhibit its worst traits, unknowingly. The powers of a Prince involve causing destruction with the tools their Aspect provides, or destroying things associated with it, like destroying souls in the case of a Prince of Heart.
A Bard starts off in a position where they passively destroy their Aspect in themselves - intentionally or not - and live in a state of mind which may be unnatural and harming to them, but later in their life they may experience a breakdown moment where their Aspect finally “catches up” to them, after which the Bard’s life will never be the same, as they invite destruction through their Aspect. The powers of a Bard are not very well defined in canon, but most likely involve manifesting their Aspect to cause destruction through it and empowering themselves with it in some way to cause destruction with it, as well as knowing how to cause maximum devastation with the tools their Aspect provides them with.
ROGUE (+) <==> THIEF (-); TO TAKE
The outlaw Classes, or the redistributor Classes. They steal their Aspect, but Thieves do so to benefit themselves, whilst Rogues share their Aspect with their teammates.
Thieves thinks themselves more “worthy” to hold their Aspect, and think themselves not to have enough of it, aiming to gain more and more of it. At the same time, a Thief will more often than not have an abundance of their Aspect to start with, but this can never be enough to satiate the Thief. The Powers of a Thief involve stealing the essence of their Aspect away from enemies and “storing” it, being ready to unleash it. For example, a Thief of Light stole away the luck from her enemies, causing them to be unlucky and using this stolen luck later to improve her own odds.
Rogues tend to give all of their Aspect away - even that which truly belongs to them. Perhaps they think themselves unworthy, or perhaps they think others need it more, but the bottom line is that they can, and often do, give away all they have, finding their own needs not as necessary to tend to. Like Thieves, Rogues tend to start off having a lot of their Aspect, but they struggle to keep any of it for themselves, even when doing so would be healthier. The powers of a Rogue seem more or less identical to those of a Thief, although a Rogue will often times give whatever they stole to others.
MUSE (+) <==> LORD (-); TO COMMAND
The master classes. Both exert immense influence on the notions of reality around them through their Aspect, but Muses do so passively whilst aiding others, or otherwise working for the greater good, while Lords do so actively to benefit their own needs. In general, these Classes are thought to hold supreme command over the forces of their Aspect. They are the most enigmatic out of all the Classes, perhaps, as almost anything that could be said about them has its roots in speculation and fan theories, and as such I think these two Classes, more than the other pairs, need to be talked about separately.
The following are my pairings of the remaining Classes:
SEER (+) <==> MAGE (-); TO UNDERSTAND
The knowledge classes.
Seers more often than not gain understanding of their Aspect through passive means and outside sources, with the intent of sharing their knowledge with their teammates, that being their main motif. Seers find genuine interest in their Aspect and study it out of curiosity and passion. The knowledge a Seer gains is used to guide others more so than it is to further the Seer’s own agenda, and as such it is often theoretical in nature. A Seer’s powers involve an unnatural, intuitive and most complete understanding of their Aspect, which a Seer uses to guide others.
Mages, on the other hand, gain the knowledge about their Aspect themselves, whether they want to or not, through near-constant unabridged experience with it. For a Mage, the overexposure to their Aspect means that, more often than not, their Aspect is more of a negative force in their life. However, through this overexposure, the Mage gains a degree of intimate understanding that is practically unmatched, and a Mage will use it to further their own goals, often times creating something with it. The powers of a Mage, again, are not very well defined in canon, but seem to be similar to a Seer’s, with more emphasis on actually applying this knowledge in practice. Perhaps a Mage, as their title implies, can have a degree of command over the forces their Aspect is tied to, invoking the archetype of the Magician, casting spells they have learned and perfected.
KNIGHT (+) <==> PAGE (-); TO SERVE
The servitude classes. Servitude here means both “to perform a service or duties for somebody” and “to provide somebody with something”.
The Page’s journey is one of self-discovery and of a destined journey towards a great potential of their own. They are served with and through their Aspect by others, even as they lack it at first, but they most definitely will provide it back sooner or later. Pages are often underestimated by others, and in their perceived helplessness may appear innocent or in need of protection. As such, others often try to “serve” them, whether the Page thinks it necessary or not. A Page’s powers involve providing others with their Aspect, returning the favor after being given it for so long. A Page of Hope, for example, was able to make an idea more real by believing in it hard enough. He was also able to generate an extremely powerful blast of Hope energy once he has ascended to his peak, “providing” it to those opposing him.
Knights serve others with and through their Aspect and regard their own needs a lot less frequently. They tend to be adept with their Aspect, but their Aspect is also the root of their insecurity. A Knight often fails to live up to their own standards when it comes to their Aspect, and they try as hard as they can to externally validate themselves, creating an emotional armor of sorts, providing both themselves and others with their Aspect, practically dedicating their lives to serve their own, often times flawed, definition of it. The powers of a Knight involve the application of their Aspect in many circumstances, using it as both sword and shield to protect others.
HEIR (+) <==> WITCH (-); TO CHANGE
The manipulation or changing classes. Both deal with change, as Witches change their Aspect or with their Aspect, and Heirs invite change through it.
Witches change their Aspect literally, like changing the size of objects in case of a Witch of Space, but they seek to change their Aspect at its core as well. A Witch often times feels trapped within the constraints of their Aspect, thinking it flawed or too limiting, this driving them to seek change. Through connections to a being that has extreme influence over their Aspect, a Witch also often has control of a great amount of power related to their Aspect in general, but the relationship a Witch has to this being (called a “familiar”) is very toxic in most cases.
Heirs invite change to occur through the usage of their Aspects, an Heir of Doom, for example, changing the course of his game through heroic self-sacrifice. An Heir will also usually be naturally gifted with their Aspect, it seemingly guiding and helping them along the way, but the longer an Heir goes without retrospection and reconsidering their own choices, being reliant on their Aspect, the more trapped within its restraints they will be. When it comes to powers, an Heir seems to literally be protected by their Aspect, as an Heir of Breath was able to dissolve into wind when somebody tried to attack him, but their Aspect also gives them a large amount of general influence over the magical forces that aid the Heir in causing change.
SYLPH (+) <==> MAID (-); TO CREATE
The creation/maintenance classes. Both deal with perpetuating their Aspect, keeping it going both through maintenance and outright multiplication.
Sylphs, as the passive “creator”, seem more connected to the idea of healing than to direct creation. They embrace their role and concern themselves with the healing and maintenance of their Aspect wholeheartedly, thinking that the world doesn’t have enough of it, being antithetical to Princes in that way. But a Sylph may overstep some boundaries in their devotion to their Aspect, and that may lead the dedicated “healer” Class down a road of violence and vengeance. A Sylph’s powers reflect their role, the Sylph of Light being able to return sight to someone who has been blinded before, as well ascending somebody to the peak of their power instantly, “healing” their importance and relevance.
Maids start off in a position of servitude to their Aspect. They create their Aspect directly, but as they do so, they feel uncomfortable and trapped. Later in their lives Maids may rebel against their Aspect, freeing them from its confines and distancing themselves from what was once their reality, this new state often feeling much more natural to them. But a Maid still is, at heart, very much attracted to the ideas their Aspect represents, and as they distance themselves from active servitude, they don’t necessarily leave their Aspect behind, and may even return to their role as a creator in time. The powers of a Maid allow for direct creation of their Aspect, as a Maid of life was able to revive both others and herself, although only once per person, creating Life in the process.
3) Lunar Sway
One’s Lunar Sway in the context of classpecting is a term which, based on a variety of personality traits of the individual at hand, defines them as either a Prospit or Derse dreamer, based on the names of the two moons each session of the Game has.
In the Game, a character’s dream self is essentially their duplicate that lays sleeping on one of the moons within the Medium – Prospit or Derse. It is large part of core gameplay, being an “extra life” and offering players a variety of other different essential mechanics, such as the very ability to ascend to God Tier, but here we will only be discussing the role of one’s Lunar Sway as a part of their Mythological Role.
The way in which dream selves are distributed is still somewhat vague, despite having an official explanation, as there exist many oddities which make understanding the existing patterns that much harder. For example, all characters in Homestuck dream on the same moon as their ancestors, even though most of them have vastly different personalities. Or, as another example, it is literally never explained why the Captors have two dream selves, and, what is even stranger, just one Lunar Sway marked as their true one in the Gemini extended zodiac sign page.
As a general rule of thumb, it is accepted that Aspects may sway their bearers towards specific moons, what with all of the Time players in the original comic being Derse Dreamers and Space players being Prospit Dreamers, but not only does the extended zodiac list Prospit bound Time signs, we actually get to meet some of those “pattern breakers” in Friendsim, so I can’t really say this applies, and if it does, it doesn’t do so in all cases.
The way one’s Lunar Sway is known to be determined, however, is through one’s personality. Generally speaking, the duality of character traits Derse/Prospit represent includes such ideas as: Skepticism/Acceptance, Rebelliousness/Adaptiveness, Pessimism/Optimism, Secrecy/Openness, Anxiety/Freedom, Proaction/Reaction, and possibly some others that, although somewhat coinciding with some ideas Aspects are known to represent, add up to any given Classpect to further define an individual on a yet deeper level.
To conclude:
An Aspect is a cluster of ideas associated with a character;
A Class is a behavioral archetype through which these ideas will manifest;
Lunar Sway adds further context to the Class + Aspect pair, but is less important overall.

Movies I Liked in 2020
Every year I reflect on the pop culture I enjoyed and put it in some sort of order.
Discussing film in 2020 is almost nonsensical. Theatres were shut down in most places for most of the year, shuffling release schedules and availability of titles in various markets, further fracturing an already-fragmented landscape. I personally love the movie-going experience – the darkened atmosphere, the massive screen, the ability to escape the outside world for a couple hours in the company of a room of strangers. Man, do I miss all of that. Yet I am exceedingly grateful to the creators and media conglomerates that decided to release some of their projects to streaming services and “virtual cinemas” during this unprecedented year. (Despite Wonder Woman 1984’s flaws, wow, was it nice to have a new action blockbuster to watch over the holidays.)
I toyed with breaking out stage/theatre projects separately, but at the end of the day, had those played on the big screen they would have still been considered, so I decided to keep everything together. This year more than ever I make no claims to comprehensiveness, and it seems even more futile than usual to rank these films, so here are 15 of my favorite films of 2020 listed in alphabetical order. How I wish I could have experienced these all on the big screen.
American Utopia (available on HBO)
Spike Lee’s film of the Broadway engagement of David Byrne’s American Utopia is right up there with Jonathan Demme’s Stop Making Sense, the gold standard of concert films (and I’m not even much of a Talking Heads/Byrne fan!). The brilliance of this tour-turned-Broadway show is the elimination of any stationary equipment – Byrne and his band, utilizing mobile instruments, perform choreographed movement to the songs (a mix of Byrne solo material and Talking Heads classics) on an otherwise bare stage. The arrangements of the songs themselves are warm and life-affirming, something we all needed more of in 2020.
An American Pickle (available on HBOMax)
This quirky comedy from writer Simon Rich stars Seth Rogan in dual roles as an immigrant in the early 1900s transplanted to modern day New York and his last remaining descendant. I wasn’t expecting much from the premise but found it to be a surprisingly resonant story about family and legacy with salient observations about modern conveniences and appreciating small pleasures. Rogan himself is really great in this, creating two very distinct and believable characters that in an alternate reality might be up for awards consideration.
Black Is King (available on Disney+)
Beyonce’s latest visual album has its origins in her Lion King role, but the material transcends that misbegotten remake (despite the occasional out-of-place audio clips sprinkled throughout). The visuals here are stunning, from the costumes and makeup to the set design and choreography, all in celebration of Black excellence and beauty.
Emma. (available on HBO, VOD and Blu-ray)
One of the last films I saw in theatres this spring was the latest treatment of Jane Austen’s Emma from director Autumn de Wilde. Similar to Little Women last year, I had no prior experience with the source material, never having read the novel or seen any prior adaptations (outside of Clueless, if you count that), but I found it absolutely delightful. The cast is terrific, including Anya Taylor-Joy in a role completely different than her other big turn this year in The Queen’s Gambit, and the production design & direction are impeccably sumptuous, creating the type of escapism that came to mean all-the-more as the year wore on.
First Cow (available on Showtime, VOD and Blu-ray)
Kelly Reichardt’s latest film is a moving meditation on unexpected friendship, ideas of masculinity and economic inequality set against the backdrop of 1800s Oregon Country. Poetic but not ponderous, First Cow is one of the most humane and empathetic portraits of man and nature I experienced in 2020.
Hamilton (available on Disney+)
Already a big of Lin Manual-Miranda’s race-bent musical about founding father Alexander Hamilton, I was still awed by this document of the original Broadway production. Director Tommy Kail adeptly films his own stage direction while capturing intimate moments through closeups and vantages that are unavailable to the live audience. And while I personally may have preferred Lin to sing more than sob through some of his Act II songs, the whole cast is phenomenal, especially Leslie Odom Jr, Renée Elise Goldsberry and MVP Daveed Diggs whose energy and charisma are palpable in his dual role as Lafayette/Jefferson.
Just Mercy (available on HBO, VOD and Blu-ray)
Although technically a 2019 film, Just Mercy didn’t receive wide release until 2020 so I’m including it here. The adaptation of lawyer Bryan Stevenson’s memoir about his fight for death row inmates is a powerful story of the ongoing fight for justice and rarely falls into “based on a true story”/biopic clichés. Michael Jordan brings dignity and righteousness to the role of Stephenson and Jamie Foxx is excellent as the wrongfully incarcerated Walter McMillian.
Kajillionaire (available on VOD)
The story of an insular family of grifters, Kajillionaire explores what it’s like to exist in a bubble and reconcile that with a growing understanding of the wider world. Evan Rachel Wood engenders immense empathy with her portrayal of the family’s daughter who has been raised without any real physical affection or affirmation and Gina Rodriguez exudes light and charisma as a woman who comes into their orbit and changes everything.
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (available on Netflix)
Adapted from August Wilson’s play of the same name, this film contains a powerhouse performance from Viola Davis as the titular blues singer but belongs to the magnetic Chadwick Boseman in his final role. As Levee, a brash young songwriter and musician, Boseman fully realizes a portrait of a talented and demeaned Black man in America, trapped by circumstance and his own feelings of helplessness. It’s beautiful and gut-wrenching to behold, and makes his passing all the more tragic as we can only imagine the great performances that we’ll never get to see.
Mank (available on Netflix)
Mank, a biopic about Golden Age Hollywood screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz, may be director David Fincher’s most conventional film yet, however that takes nothing away from the charm of its engaging storytelling and performances. As “Mank” works – or rather drunkenly procrastinates – on the screenplay for Citizen Kane, we get flashbacks of his relationships with William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies, which will provide the basis for his script’s thinly veiled characters.
Small Axe (available on Amazon Prime)
A series of five separate films from director Steve McQueen, the Small Axe series is linked by its exploration of the West Indian community in London. Exploring topics including the justice system, educational disparity and the unifying & life-affirming power of music, these films are each powerful and moving on their own but add up to a rich and beautiful tapestry of the complexities of immigrant life.
Soul (available on Disney+)
Soul is in many ways a spiritual successor (pun intended) to Inside Out, my all-time favorite Pixar film, envisioning life after death (or is that life before life?) as a strange and delightfully stylized realm where new souls prepare to be born. The audience surrogate to this world is a frustrated jazz musician who finds himself incapacitated the day of his big break. The stunningly rendered film is another example of the studio – and co-director Pete Docter – at its heart-rending best with lovely observations about passion, mentorship and being present to life’s small pleasures.
The Vast of Night (available on Amazon Prime)
An indie sci-fi flick set in 1950s New Mexico from first-time director Andrew Patterson, The Vast of Night pays homage to the likes of The Twilight Zone better than the current reboot of that show does. This surprisingly compelling movie creates a tangible sense of time and place and utilizes innovative shots and blocking to deliver something unique and artful, while still delivering on its genre promises.
What the Constitution Means to Me (available on Amazon Prime)
The final live communal event I attended before everything locked down last spring was the touring production of this Heidi Schreck play, and boy, was it a moving way to say a temporary goodbye to live theatre (even if I didn’t quite know it at the time). Later in the year, Amazon gifted us with a record of Schreck’s Broadway run, which loses nothing of its impact or immediacy. Using her personal history of debate contests at American Legion Halls as an entry point, Schreck explores how the Constitution has been used (and not used) to impact the rights of women (and other marginalized groups) throughout America’s history. Brilliant, heart-breaking and inspiring art.
Wolfwalkers (available on AppleTV+)
The latest wonder from director Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea) completes his trilogy of films inspired by Irish mythology. The topics this time are the Wolfwalkers, an Irish variation of the Werewolf legend, and the clash of urbanization with the natural world. Vividly rendered in gorgeous traditional animation, this is one of the most visually splendid things I saw all year.
Bonus! Honorable Mentions:
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (Netflix)
Feels Good Man (VOD)
Palm Springs (hulu)
Sound of Metal (Amazon Prime)
Tenet (VOD, Blu-ray)
