In the months leading up to the Olympics, coincidental similarities between the characters and several events became were noted on the internet blogs under titles such as "Curse of the Fuwa". Some Chinese citizens have taken to calling the characters "Wuwa" (巫娃, witch dolls).

Nini, a swallow thought to be a kite, was blamed for the "kite city" of Weifang T195 train accident. Nini was also believed to be a locust, and associated with a locust plague that infested Inner Mongolia in June 2008.

Yingying, a Tibetan antelope, for the 2008 Tibetan unrest.

Huanhuan, representing the Olympic flame, for the Summer Olympics torch relay protests.

Jingjing, a panda, for the Sichuan earthquake. The epicenter of the earthquake is very close to the Wolong Nature Reserve.

Beibei, a Chinese sturgeon of water/sea element, for the 2008 South China floods.

Construction on the stadium for the Montreal 1976 Olympics was notoriously slow, and the stadium was not yet finished when the Games began. The roof and tower were finally completed in 1987. Despite initial projections in 1970 that the stadium would cost only CA$134 million to construct, strikes and construction delays served to escalate these costs. By the time the stadium opened (in an unfinished form), the total costs had risen to CA$1.1 billion. The bill was finally paid off in November 2006.

During the opening ceremony of the Sochi 2014 Olympics, a display of snowflakes were set to open into the five Olympic rings. However, due to a technical error, one of the snowflakes failed to open. The organizers poked fun at the glitch during the closing ceremony: performers positioned themselves to form the Olympic rings, but a cluster stayed closed to mimic the malfunction.
