Downton Abbey Fashion 57 - indoors fashion in 1924
Cora’s day wardrobe this season is a mixed bag. Some have me go, “oh, so pretty!”; others have me think they really want her to look like a grandma now. I realize that I’m saying this as a 2020s person about 1920s fashions, so my perception may be warped.
Granny outfit number one. I’m usually a fan of embroidery, but I think this shirt would look less frumpy if said embroidery reached up to the shoulders. Also if it had literally any other collar. Even a neckline without a collar would’ve been better. The chiffon being a bit more on the peach side rather than puke puce would also help. Meh. Still, this does stay on for season 6.
Pretty boring shirt, but despite my distaste for white on Cora post-Edwardian, it’s at least not as dowdy as the last one. Curiously, this plus a scarf plus a flowery hat is fancy enough for Cora to wear to Rose’s wedding. Who am I to criticize. The lace yoke is nice, the silk satin is shiny, but I mainly took this in for the coat Cora has around her shoulders in the second picture. Printed silk satin, I would guess, and it looks lovely.
One of her loveliest house dresses over the entire show – why does everyone get something in this blue this season? Anyway. A few pin tucks to give the shoulders a little shaping, lace trim galore, one of those fluttery layered skirts that looks even better for most of this being lightweight chiffon. This whole dress appears like a summer day. It comes back next season, as really most of her new indoor outfits of season 5 do.
I’ll never escape bland cream silk satin blouses. This one is a wrap top style with the kind of large collar that plays at being a sailor collar, it’s got some cuffs, some either meant-to-be-beige or strongly yellowed lace to fill out the cleavage V… Nothing wrong with it.
This teal dress is one Cora wears combined with her orange satin coat a lot, especially during her time being courted by Mr Bricker. At least Fellowes didn’t have a red A stitched on it; he’s unsubtle like that. The dress is a bit stiff-looking and rectangular for my taste, but the overall design with the curlicues down the front is really pleasant to look at. When this comes back in season 6, I get a look at the knife-pleated panels inserted into the sides of the skirt.
Another granny blouse, so I guess that qualifies it to stay into the next season. There’s something about this particular shape of short but standing collar that my brain registers as unflattering. The embroidered material is nice though; the peach color with those lilac leaves and pink flowers makes for a nice look overall. It looks rectangular as ever, but what can you do.
Ivory silk satin and a straight-lined rectangle blouse, although I’m inclined to forgive this one because it brings in fringe, a playful element that adds movement to the look. Other than that, the double row of buttons down the front is probably not necessary, but I sure like to look at it, and then we have a little embroidered trim everywhere. Perhaps not surprisingly with my weakness for fringe, I rather like this and happily welcome it back in season 6.
Amidst all the ivory and cream silk satin, I am grateful for a black dress for a change, even if it has this weird little standing collar. Gathered chiffon sleeves, deep V shape over the front (even though here it’s not via the cut but via the decoration); that much we know. And then the majority of the front is covered in leafy cream lace that is framed with embroidered flowers in pink and red shades. Another holdover for the next season.
Heh, this is the sort of uneven grey shade you get by layering a very translucent black chiffon (or, in case of the sleeves, tulle) over a white or off-white base layer. I like it; it’s more cloudy and therefore more interesting to look at than a perfectly even surface color. And then it’s embroidered all over with this web of flowers, very sweet, so this stays into the next season, too.
There is strictly speaking nothing wrong with this. Cora wears her well-established cream satin, it’s got a few pin tucks, and this neckline design adds a point of interest. I’ll flat-out admit that I just personally don’t have a taste for this kind of unbound-tie-through-loophole front design. It shows up several times in the Crawleys’ 1920s outfits, but I never warm up to it. So, I’m glad this is mostly put on background duty for ensembles and coats in season 6.
--------------
We’ll end on something that is to my taste – this glorious day dress Lady Sinderby marches up in to greet her guests. It’s mostly chiffon and all flowers, and it adds up to such a fluttery, breezy look that she may as well pose as a garden fairy. There’s some draping over the chest, some layering in these little triangle panels of the skirt, yet the dress looks almost weightless. Love it.

Corporate Fashion with 𝒩adine.
As of the beginning of 2023, I got promoted to coordinator at my job, making me a full-time corporate girlie. I wanted to share some fashion tips and advice for my other entry-level girls who are new to the corporate workplace. To begin, Looking at your workplace guidelines on work attire is important. My agency is lenient, not having restrictions on footwear or colours, so keep that in mind throughout the post. I’ll provide reference photos (the images aren’t mine).
Beauty
Most corporate occupations have this silent rule that women have to wear makeup. Fortunately, that isn't the case at my place of work. I wear makeup to work because I want to. I like to keep my makeup simple and light.
I don't wear foundation, but I do use concealer for my hyperpigmentation. I apply it under my eyes, on the corners of my mouth and any acne scars. For my brows, I like to keep my natural brow shape, just lightly filling in and brushing them. For blush, I use cream on my cheeks and nose bridge.
I have dark skin, so most brown lip liners aren’t dark enough for me, so I use a combination of black and brown liners paired with a sheer pink gloss. I finish off my makeup, highlighting my nose and cheekbones. I've made it a part of my beauty routine to get my lashes done, and I usually go with a cat hybrid set.
I used to have long, stiletto French nails, but lately, I've been learning the guitar, so I've kept my nails short with red gel polish.
As for hair I almost always have my hair in protective styles most notably cornrows, but when my hair is out of braids I have it in a low bun. I’ve recently bought a kinky straight wig that I’ve cut and customised similarly to the reference photo, and I’m so in love with it.
Basics
From satin blouses to pencil skirts, the basics include all the trusty fashion essentials for the office. Sticking to neutral when working in a corporate workspace is always safe. If you love colours like me, I’d advise you to include coloured pieces such as turtlenecks, blouses or scarves to brighten your outfit.
As for inspiration, I think you can’t go wrong with a matching set. My favourite set is a white waistcoat paired with a long pencil skirt; I also have a similar waistcoat and pants set in grey. I wear slip-on loafers during warmer weather, and during cooler temperatures, I will wear boots and a turtleneck underneath the waistcoat or a trench coat.
Dressing for the Weather
Regarding weather, for winter, you can switch out your summer blouses and linen shirts for high-neck tops, turtlenecks and knit sweater vests to layer. I'm Australian, so our winters can feel much colder. Therefore I usually wear tweed blazers and coats. I own three trench coats for work; one in black, one in beige and the other in white; I rotate between the three.
I suggest having neutral-coloured outerwear so you can reuse and style them with more pieces. I have a stereotypical girly style so I love tweed sets paired with stockings and a nice pair of boots or heels when the weather gets cold.
As for Summer, I like to focus on the fabric of the pieces I own, prioritising breathable and lightweight textures such as; cotton, linen, silk or satin. Pairing my tops with loose-fitted, lightweight pants and silk skirts. You can throw on a blazer when it's feeling a bit cooler. It’s important to learn how to style your body type, I'm a pear shape, so I have wider hips with a smaller upper body and waist. I like showing my figure, so I usually wear fitted high-waisted trousers, shorts and skirts.
Accessories & Essentials
I love my loafers; as previously mentioned, I wear slip-on loafers during warmer weather, but for those who have to wear heels for work, you can never go wrong with a sturdy pair of sling-back heels. I like shopping for my work shoes at Charles and Keith; they are affordable and good quality.
I've recently switched from a shoulder bag to a backpack for my back health; I previously used a Burberry shoulder bag, but I've since switched to an Ecosusi women's vintage backpack in black.
I’m a maximalist to the core although I like to keep my jewellery minimal for work, My staples are some thick gold hoops, my Casio gold watch and my gold cross necklace, which I pair with a few rings and bracelets, that’s all.
Good luck to all my corporate baddies and nine-to-five girlies.
Sincerely,
𝒩adine.

I know you’ve answered this several times before but what’s everyone’s current style like (since its possible it’s changed)
This is actually in my character sheets so I’ll give their style with a few examples of colors and fave clothing and stuff like that.
This will get way too detailed but I don’t care, I’ve been waiting for this moment.
Bloom: I don’t know how to describe her style, maybe casual street style but a little cute?
Her main colors are blue, yellow, light orange and the tiniest dash of pink. Bell bottom jeans and high tops are her staple. Other favorites are: thrift shirts, graphic T’s, simple form fitting blouses. Messy ponytails.
Later on her style becomes just a bit more elaborate (in part thanks to the other girls influencing her style) and she incorporates cropped cardigans, pattern jeans and collard shirts. She loves using small flames but doesn’t wear a lot of red. Doesn’t like heels. Messy buns are her fave (she can often be seen with a pencil holding up her hair). ALSO, her staple is bell-bottom jeans and she uses a lot of sweetheart necklines as a way to honor Daphne since that was Daphne’s fave.
Stella: She’s just starcore and artsy fashion.
Her main colors are gold, orange, yellow and green. Later on starts using dark blues and silvers as she gets more in touch with her moon magic.
She wears chain belts, dozens of matching sets (crop shirt and skirt) bralette croptops, mini skirts, high waisted shorts, silk satin fabric (lots of satin fabric), sequins and glitter. Gold jewelry and *extra* shoes, wears heels almost all the time. And her hair is always straightened.
Her style doesn’t so much change as it does just… mature over time, she still wears her glitter and sequins just with more… I don’t want to say taste but more strategically if that makes sense. She experiments more with shapes and overall she does appear a little more mature. She also starts curling her hair a little more often.
Flora: A mix of bohemian and cottagecore aesthetic.
Her main colors are pink and green. Overtime she starts mixing in more neutral colors like beige, white and light greys and browns along with blues and lilac.
She wears puff sleeves, sheer blouses, ribbon corsets and long flowing skirts. She wears cute lace and lots of tull. Simple shoes. Platforms and comfortable heels and ankle boots. She always has braid crowns and accent braids.
Overtime she incorporates even more romantic silhouettes, wrap shirts, translucent shirts over tops, and more complicated shapes for her skirts. She loved showing off her shoulders and back but is at a stage in which she isn’t doing such and is wearing more long sleeved shirts. She also wears more big earings, not just hoops but also big stars and hears and moons and stuff like that. The braids remain but now her favorite kind are waterfall braids.
Musa: She starts off goth/emo but at season 3 I feel like she’s shifting becoming more goth/punk.
Her main colors are dark red and black. Overtime she incorporates dark blues and royal purples.
She wears lots of leather, strappy croptops, fishnets, plaid, checkered patterns, combat boots, chunky platforms, tight mesh tops and big jeans. Her staple is red eyeliner.
Overtime she starts wearing more chains, leg/armwarmers for the aesthetic, chokers, more leather skirts and fishnets with patterns. She loves space buns. And cropped sweaters. Big sweatshirts and lose jeans. Her staple is still red eyeliner but she starts wearing dark lipsticks, dark purple, black, etc.
Tecna: She’s kind of futuristic cyber-punk.
Her main colors are purple and green, later on incorporates silver, blues and whites.
She wears a lot of deconstructed tops and pants. Long boots, irridescent fabric. Cargo pants are her favorite, the more pockets the better. Neon colors and long sleeves.
She starts wearing a lot of bomber jackets (Stella makes her some with dozens of pockets). Visible hemlines, stamped designs (idk how to explain it) black tops and baggy pants.
Aisha: she starts off kind of not really having a style of her own and just wearing the same stuff she does to do sports and dance but over the course of season 2 and 3 she finds she really loves and embraces street style
Her main colors are tans and neutral tones at first, as she discovers herself she incorporates blues, aquas, greens, black but keeps her tans as well.
As her style develops she starts with more sporty streetwear but evolves to just streetwear, cool sweatpants, tracksuits, jerseys, leggings, knee high socks, jumpsuits and sneakers. Cargo shirts.
She incorporates cut-out tops, wide leg pants, platform boots, long necklaces and satin tops as well as interesting patterns for her tops.
Sky: Simple style, becomes a bit more fancy over time
His main colors are blues and yellows. Incorporates oranges and dark green overtime along with neutral tones.
During the swticharoo he mainly wears plain t’s, collared shirts, simple jackets, comfy sneakers and jeans.
After that he wears more ‘styllistic’ shirts and really cool shoes not sure how else to describe it and he honestly doesn’t care that much so that’s as much as he does when he’s not in prince mode. In prince mode he goes all out, long leather boots, capes and velvet.
Brandon: Sporty casual (is that a thing?) becomes more skater boy aesthetic by the day
His main colors are green and white, starts using more dark red and dark blue overtime
He wears tight shirts, vans and either simple or ripped jeans. Printed shirts and lots of weird, but cool, patterns for his shirts. Starts wearing more converses and jackets with patches.
Helia: my boy is very preppy but in a soft way if that makes sense
His main colors are beige and pale yellow and neutral colors, he incorporates pale greens and blues and reds.
He wears a lot of chinos, soft cardigans and collared shirts as well as knitted sweaters and vans that he paints on .
He incorporates overtime blazers, button ups, scarves, pullovers, soft vests and loose… what are they called? Those romeo-like shirts you know the ones. But he still wears exclusively long sleeves unless he’s in the dorm or with just the squad.
Riven: He starts off very street style but after he starts living with his grandparents his street style starts incorporating some punk elements (yes, he was influenced by Musa but he will never admit it)
His main colors are dark red, dark blue and grays. He incorporates more blacks, greens and different shades of red.
Bomber jackets are his staple in season 1. He also wears leather jackets, cropped t’s, graphic t’s, ripped jeans and simple shirts with stickers as well as sneakers.
Overtime he incorporates, hightops, plain sleeveless shirts, black cargo pants and darker bomber jackets with patches. He starts wearing a lot of rings and his sister always paints his nails black. He’ll occasionally ask Musa to do his eyeliner.
Timmy: I love Timmy but he is low-key hopeless. He’s just nerd
His main colors are yellows and oranges, he wears more greens and neutral tones overtime.
He wears simple t-shirts with colored sleeves, baggy jeans and cotton shirts, sneakers and layers. He has 1 jean jacket that he loves more than life itself, both his mom and Stella keep trying to burn it because it’s that old but he guards it with his life.
He starts wearing more button up shirts, turtlenecks and slightly less baggy jeans. He gets shirts with cute patterns (he has one with kitten paws) or graphic t-shirts from fandoms. He also wears a newer jean jacket with patches that Stella made but still has the old one.
Nabu: he has a cool casual style if that makes sense? Not sure?
His main colors are purples, blues, grays and neutral tones.
He wears chinos, button up shirts, cool vans, loose sweaters. Cool long sleeved, loose shirts. Leather bracelets and hawaiian-style shirts only with patterns that are more ‘fashionable’.
Fire-round for the Trix’s styles in season 1 since all fashion has gone out the window for them for different reasons.
Icy: main colors; blues and silvers
HIGH PONYTAIL, leather skirts, crystals and crop tops. Thigh high boots, belts, strappy tops high heels and mini skirts with chains.
Stormy: main colors; dark reds, black and blue
Punk. Ripped fishnets, black, ripped graphic t’s, belts, off-shoulder shirts and plaid shirts over black bras.
Darcy: main colors; purple, yellow and grays.
Long bell pants, vests and blazers. Circles/weird patters, small sunglasses. Platforms and simple crop tops.
There!
Now, you may be asking, Dragonfly did you seriously just HAVE THIS in your fucking character sheets since before season 1 began?
…yes, yes I did. I HAD A LOT OF FREE TIME AND IT WAS PART OF THE CHARACTERIZATION. Also I was pissed at what Fate did with fashion and that’s why s1 had a lot of descriptions of what the girls were wearing
Also also, fun fact, I found in Stormy’s character sheet that her real name was going to be Rita? And I just didn’t remember I’d already decided her real name and just changed it to Willow and I hadn’t remembered the name change until now? So uh… yeah?
Anyways, hope you enjoyed!

Chapter 2: I'm Not Sorry
Summary:
Virgil and Remy sleep together and it takes Virgil a long time to get over it. He starts dating this cute guy named Emile who couldn’t be further from his old flame, thinking that this guy would be safe to open up to after it all.
Notes:
I got somethin' to say Get the fuck out my way Don't know if I'll make it 'til tomorrow Without losing all my marbles - Royal & the Serpent

Remy wasn’t expecting his first step into the kitchen that morning to be met with such a dower expression from his partner. There they were, one of the most wonderful people in the world—as far as he was concerned at least—leaned up against the counter with a frown tugging at their features while they scrolled through their phone. It seemed Emile didn’t even notice that the kettle they were filling at the sink had started to overflow. Rather, the tap water just continued to over pour into the sink and down the drain.
Without a word, the first thing Remy did was switch off the faucet, smoothly slinging up the handle of the kettle to place it on the stove to heat. He gave Emile a little hip bump as he slid past. Emile looked up at him with a sheepish expression and apologetic grin as they finally looked up from the little screen.
“Sorry, starlight,” Emile said, placing their phone flat on the counter as they reached up a hand to brush it over his shoulder.
Their smile softened, and he stayed in place, reaching an arm around their waist to tug them just a little bit closer. He could feel the way they melted into his arms, leaning their soft cheek against his shoulder just the way he expected. Emile was already dressed for the day in a long pleated beige skirt, a soft satin blouse with a gray cardigan nestled over their shoulders, but Remy was still in a t-shirt and flannels. He hoped it made him a little bit cozier for them and Remy was half-tempted to try and coax Emile to call off ‘sick’ to work and come back to bed so he could keep them in his arms for a few more hours and away from whatever it was that was causing them early morning grief.
Did it matter that he didn’t know what it was yet? Not really. He was sure they could figure out the who, what, when, where, why, and how once he’d helped them through a bit more relaxation.
As much as he wanted to ask, he didn’t, knowing they’d never agree, not with the fact that they’d just taken a few days off the other week with a flu. No, he’d just have to get the touch and grounding in that he could that morning before they left for the day.
“What’s on your mind, north?” Remy whispered into the quiet of the early hours.
Really it was far too early for either of them to be up as far as he was concerned, with the approaching winter months, the sun hadn’t even risen yet. What godforsaken morning person decided that any human being should be up before even the birds?
“It’s V,” Emile admitted, lifting their head to look up into his eyes, as if searching for some kind of reassurance. They usually weren’t the type, but something was up.
“Your other partner,” Remy confirmed, keeping a steady gaze as he tried to keep his expression from wavering.
He couldn’t say there wasn’t jealousy there, of course there was a little bit. Emile and he had started their relationship with the mutual agreement that they wouldn’t be exclusive, that neither of them really believed in it, but…
…Well for Remy that had always meant non-emotional relationships. He’d never even considered the prospect of being able to fall in love with someone else. Emile had never once seemed jealous, only confident of their place in his life, and he did his best to reconfirm just how much they meant to him.
It was just that when they came home one day and not only admitted that they had started taking an interest in someone, but that they had started to have strong emotional feelings for this other person, Remy didn’t know how to feel. There was a lot of anguish in the beginning. He’d done his best to try and keep that from Emile, not wanting to burden them with the emotional fallout of something that he technically should have always known was a possibility.
Facing the insecurity of the reality of it was a whole other situation.
It took a lot of self-reflection on his part, a lot of facing his own limitations and insecurities. He couldn’t say that he was all the way there all the time, but… well, every time they talked about this new mysterious guy that had entered their life, the way they lit up with joy, he loved that for them. He wanted to keep seeing that smile, the way that they bubbled with excitement when their phone dinged with a message or the way they spent extra care in choosing their clothes before a date with him.
No, he couldn’t take that joy away from them, rather, Remy just wanted to keep being a part of it, keep being another source of it, something else to keep that soft smile on their face. He was certain that his North Star was far too good for this world, and if someone else was seeing that, someone that made them happy…
He couldn’t see that as a bad thing, not really, not when he pushed past the initial reaction to realize any thoughts otherwise were just stemming from his own rooted insecurity. They had done nothing to cause any doubt in his mind that they loved him, not with the way they smiled at him, reached for him, nestled into his arms like he was thier safe space.
If it wasn’t abundantly clear, Remy had done a lot of thinking, a lot of introspection recently, wanting to ensure he entered into this situation from the best perspective that he could muster.
What he hadn’t considered was the sudden lack of control he was feeling.
It had just occurred to him that Emile was hanging their heart on this whole other person and that they had the power to break it, if they wanted to, and there wasn’t a thing he could do about it. Not really. That made a panic rise in his chest that he wasn’t really sure how to handle. All he could do was tighten his grip a little bit more. He couldn’t protect them from this, but he could support them at the very least.
“What happened?” Remy asked in a hush, nuzzling in against the back of their crown as he pressed a kiss to the very edge of their hairline. He wanted to maintain the early morning peace just a little bit longer for them.
“Nothing really,” Emile said, pulling their arms in and wrapping them over his. “It’s just that I messaged V about meeting you last night after our date, and he’s just felt a little distant since then,” they said, looking as if they were doubting their own words. They knew, logically, that there could be a lot of reasons that could cause someone to get quiet for a little while, but sometimes timing could be a scary thing when you were used to having a mind that was quick to analyze cause and effect.
He could see where Emile was going with this.
“Maybe he overslept?” Remy asked, doubting it himself. With the way he’d seen the pair of them messaging back and forth recently, he was certain that Emile would have already known if that were the case. “Try not to overthink it until you get the facts, North?”
Despite him asking, despite Emile’s hesitant nod, he knew they would anyway, they couldn’t help it, overthinking was just in their nature.
“It’s probably nothing…” Emile trailed off, even as doubt and worry lingered on their face as the very first rays of dawn started to break over the horizon. The way the sunrays slipped through the kitchen window and illuminated his North Star from behind made for such an ethereal sight that he was a bit taken aback by the way they could just simply glow.
They looked at their phone again and Remy hoped this wouldn’t become a nervous habit as they scrolled over the screen again, looking for a message that just wasn’t there. There was a odd juxtaposition between how humanizing Emile’s worry was compared to the way they looked in that first break of dawn. He was sure they didn’t notice the effect they had. They never did, that their strange and giddy outlook on the world had swept him up in a whirlwind of adoration for as long as he could remember.
“Do you want to see a picture from yesterday?” They asked, holding out the little screened device to him at an angle for him to take. He’d always appreciated how readily they offered access and answers to anything and everything without a thought, like it never really occurred to them to hide things from him. He knew the shorthand of the new partner’s name was in respect of their boundaries as he and Emile started to figure out a new relationship and where Remy fit into it all. “I really like this one,” they said, a soft smile overtaking their face and he could feel them relaxing beneath his arms just the tiniest bit.
Remy accepted the offering and held up the phone, getting a better look at the new angle as he held it for them both to see. And there Emile was, side-by-side with a ghost.
“Oh, fuck-”
-----------
Virgil wasn’t sure when he went from successfully avoiding Emile for a few modest hours, to his phone blowing up with a number of texts and calls that he was struggling to process, much less respond to. Someone wanted to talk to him, be it Emile or Remy, he wasn’t sure, but he didn’t know what to do in the current situation.
A little afraid that Emile might try knocking on his apartment door to seek him out, Virgil slunk away that morning, grabbing drive-thru coffee, rather than his usual at the bakery he’d frequented since coming back to town, and slipped into the building on the end of main street that his “boss” was renting out for the sake of collaboration, and equipment, more than it being a true work space.
Virgil had only been in the place a handful of times in his weeks since returning, specifically for meetings and the like of where they wanted to go with the story. His first time here, Remus had him play through the previous game, start to finish, to get a sense of the vibes and a working knowledge of the storyline. Once he was able to get a summary of where they wanted to go next with the project, Virgil was able to come back with some concept sketches for environments, levels, characters, and other scenes.
But really, almost all his work could be done online, even the meetings technically. Remus was a very physical person though, especially when it came to creative ventures, so nothing beat the kind of feedback he got when the developer grabbed a pen and started jotting down notes directly on his concept work.
Speaking of Remus…
There was a clattering in the hall as some equipment that Remus was carrying in suddenly slipped from his arms as soon as he caught sight of Virgil, chillin’ in the corner with his tablet with the lights off. There was a series of expletives cursed out, in what sounded to be at least three different languages, but it ended on a satisfying “Fucking, dammit!” as Remus dragged a hand down his face, before moving to grab all of the pieces. What looked like sound and recording equipment scattered to the floor and Virgil hoped that Remus got some sort of warranty on it all, because it seemed pretty fucking expensive to just be dropped the like that. Maybe the packaging would hold up and prevent any of it from being broken in ‘transport,’ but really, that wasn’t his business. He wasn’t getting involved in the VA of the game.
“What the hell are you doing here at bum fuck in the morning?” Remus asked in a much calmer tone once the boxes were placed (hopefully) safely on a table to be sorted and dealt with. Virgil only gave him a cursory glance, knowing he was welcome. He might be less so in the coming weeks, when they were further along in the project and as Remus’ brother recruited more talent, but for now, with him being only one of three employees in total, not including the brothers who ran the project, they had the space to spare and he barely took up a corner anyway.
“Avoidance,” Virgil said with a shrug before looking at the time on his tablet. “What are you doing here? I don’t usually see you on the grind until at least noon.” That wasn’t completely true, usually Remus seemed to take care of things out of office, the boring stuff like networking, talking to people, corporate meetings, and other stupid stuff that Virgil wanted to avoid like the plague and knew for a fact that Remus hated nearly as much. Virgil knew that Remus had a brother that took care of most of the social side of things, but as a co-owner of their game development company, Remus couldn’t stay completely uninvolved.
“Setting up for interviews,” Remus said, looking sour at the prospect. Ah yes, more talking to people to get things done. If Virgil was evidence of anything, he was a friend of a friend kinda a guy and didn’t seem too fond of the idea of working with strangers. “Avoiding what now?”
Virgil just shrugged and passed over the phone that he’d set on the table beside him, after putting it on silent. He could still feel the phantom sensations of the near-constant buzzing as a string of messages all came through at once.
Remus accepted it with little fanfare. The device was still locked, but he could access the notification center on the lock screen.
“A bunch of shit from Em…” Remus noted, eyes half-lidded as he glanced over the popups. He looked up at Virgil again for a moment, as if things were clicking into place behind his weirdly calculating eyes. For being a game developer with an avoidant personality, he sure could fucking read people. “Isn’t that your new beau?”
Virgil didn’t respond, didn’t have to, by the look on Remus’ face the other man already knew. Virgil just pulled his legs in, feet flat on the edge of the chair as he buried himself as much as he could into his hoodie like an amorphous blob that definitely wasn’t a person that was procrastinating on hard conversations.
Who him?
Never.
“You know what I’m going to tell you, right?”
“Don’t let it affect your work?” Virgil asked in a deadpan, glancing up at Remus from beneath the hemline of his hood in a challenge.
“First of all, fuck you, I didn’t choose this capitalist hellscape any more than you did,” Remus retorted immediately crossing his arms, Virgil may have hit a nerve there. “Second of all, get your ass out of here and go talk to them you dumbass.”
Virgil stared a moment longer, pulling his tablet in against his chest as he stared at Remus petulantly. Absolutely like fuck if he was just going to talk about things and try to resolve them because his boss told him to, it’s not like Remus had any real say on his personal life.
“Out,” Remus said, pointing at the door as he shooed him towards it. “Go take care of your mental health things and come back once you have. Your work will be shit until you get this resolved anyway.”
Virgil made a disgruntled and offended noise, if they hadn’t been friends for years before the weirdness of their employee/employer situation set in, he might have held back from blowing raspberries at Remus but given their friendship and Virgil’s security in his place, he didn’t hold back, getting the same mirrored back in return as he stomped out the freshly painted front door and onto the cracked cobblestone street.
This was certainly the weirdest company he’d ever worked for, but he didn’t think he’d ever leave if he could help it.

Obey Me! Inspired Outfits: Simeon
Now, for our lovely Simeon ^w^ I almost immediately knew the look I wanted to put together based on this angel, inspired by a couple of his specific outfits (images below, from the wiki)
Included:
Sheer white blouse with satin detailing
Beige trousers
Black braided belt
Like with Luke's look, some beige oxfords would probably be a nice shoe to wear with this outfit, or black and white saddle shoes. I could probably have added a bit of gold jewellery, and maybe a black jacket or something similar (since Simeon's outfits do often have a pretty prominent element of black or another dark colour included), but I think that the neckline and other light colours, as well as the black belt, reflect his style fairly well.

Downton Abbey Fashion 58 - indoors fashion in 1924
Lukewarm take of the century: I don’t think Mary’s haircut was very flattering on her. For one, she should have had at least some of the back of her neck shaved so the backside of it doesn’t look so uneven. But as with riding aside, Mary half-asses her rebel spirit. Anyway. It’s better-looking in some stylings than in others, but overall, I miss the waves and the volume of her previous hairdo. Framed her face better imo. Onward to clothes.
Burgundy silk satin and pretty drapes – Mary is out of mourning for good and back in the game. This ensemble is lovely and stays into season 6, and I feel the pin tucks down her shoulders are something like an extended version of the gathering seams in the shoulders that we’ve seen a lot during the previous years. I think the dress may be a bit longer in the back than it is in the front, with the way it drapes to frame her legs, and it looks quite charming.
I’m not entirely sure if this is another ensemble or a dress of which I don’t quite grasp the top design, but either way, this looks nice. The one thing I appreciate about Mary is her propensity for jewel colors. The blue is lovely, the skirt a pretty smooth and plain deal, and then the top part comes around and things get intriguing. Diagonal pin tucks are named easily enough, but then there’s this kind of scarf, except it’s not tied; it’s just kind of draped over the back of her neck and flares out in the front. I don’t know how it works, but I can’t deny that the look is great. That’s why it’s allowed to stay into season 6.
I wish this wouldn’t fall so weirdly over her hip bones. It’s probably just the light because it’s not like this cardigan has any structuring; this is just a comfy, simple piece to wear in the house. And it doesn’t need any tricky cuts because the fabric is woven with a kind of fractal pattern, nice enough in and of itself. Could use a less frumpy blouse underneath it.
A rather pink puce (look, I don’t know; my English vocabulary is limited), this pretty dress premiers when Mary has her little get-away with one of the dudes she’s leading on at the time. I do love the layering on this, giving it the little extra touch when the rest of the cut keeps it simple and streamlined, although admittedly with a flattering neckline.
Granted, this doesn’t look as dowdy as Cora’s weird little standing collars do to me as it brings in asymmetry and with it a touch of modernity. It’s still rather stuffy, buttoned all the way up (although I do like the little black button pairs) and emphasizing the straight-lined cut with the pin tucks lengthwise. Widow Mary leans more into the conservative aspects of her sense of fashion than into the daring when it comes to day wear. Her evening dresses are admittedly more glamorous.
Every time I see Mary in black and it’s not for mourning, I’m tempted to set up some statistics to counter her weird “I hate wearing black” statement from the first episode. Regardless of that and my meh opinion of her hairdo, this is the level of chic we’re used to seeing on her, very simple shirt, but it’s shiny silk satin. The sailor collar has a little extra application in white and two buttons in the front that are either shell or enameled. In any case, they pop nicely.
More black, or is that dark blue? Weirdly, my first thought at this was that it’s Cora’s dress, but no, Cora hasn’t worn this one. It’s Mary’s, and it’ll be back for season 6. She could do something different than these round necklines sometime again, but since she doesn’t here, the dress makes up for it with a mass of flowers in various shades and chiffon sleeves to loosen up the severe look.
This collar is better. The shirt is a bit grey for my taste, but it works with panels of flower print on the lower hem and the cuffs, so it doesn’t get too boring. Mary is starting to settle into a massively beige phase in the second half of the season – seriously, she has like four evening dresses that all have basically the same color – and I don’t super approve. Where are the jewel colors? At least this shirt comes back with a deep red skirt in season 6.
An otherwise nice shirt that, again, could have done with a little collar to pep it up. The weave is admittedly peak; I don’t even know how this is done, but the effect intrigues me. Nothing against that black stripe down the center front, but did it really have to end in the tidiest little bow? At least lean into your bowtie styles.
Have you gotten comfortable with off-white Mary yet? She ain’t going anywhere. A simple but chic dress in which Mary goes out for dinner with the rest of her Crawley generation, and although this comes across as quite rectangular with the very smooth and plain style, I admit that I think the brown ribbon trim is used quite cleverly. See how that little sash down the length crosses her drop waist and then drapes over the front of her skirt? Nice design. It comes back next season.
The outfit in which Mary starts her next romance arc. A grey skirt – fine; at least it has some kick pleats to it. And then the shirt which manages to escape most of its bagginess effect by draping under her arms, giving the sides some shape. I really like the sleeves with that little gathering-into-a-point design; it’s about the most interesting Mary has done with her sleeves the entire season. And then we get a little black trim and some delicate flower medallion embroidery in the lower half. Altogether, bit colorless, but pretty.
--------------
Closing out on Mabel, I really wish they would have kept it with the lively designs and colors of her first outfit. The pastels are a little meh for someone who has enough fire to shut up Mary Crawley, but they possibly signify her much gentler behavior around her love interest Tony. This is still a nice dress; the chiffon does its drapey thing and I love that design of the little rows of buttons and buttonholes on her lower sleeves and the sides of her top. It’s just a little much on the tame side. This ain’t Lavinia the Saint!

Very important question. What would you wear to the opening of a museum exhibition on paleolithic archaeology? The weather will be chilly and probably rainy. The setting: a 17th century building, creaking floorboards, entire whale skeletons hanging from the ceiling, taxidermied animals encased in glass...
Oh, that sounds so nice!!! What a gorgeous, fascinating place to be, especially in rainy weather!! 🤍🌫️
To be honest, I’d be tempted to wear something rustling, something to float past ivory and wood and glass. Especially since the opening of an exhibition has such festive connotations for me. However, in chilly and rainy weather, that’d have to be combined with something a little warmer. Additionally, the academic context might call for something that balances the romanticism with the serious.
Dream look: a satin-shimmering pencil skirt or a rustling-delicate summer dress with a (possibly bulky) knit sweater on top (I’d combine one light colour with a darker one, so maybe cream, rose, light blue or white paired with wine red, dark green, black, dark blue…). Hair pinned up with a few loose strands; bangles or a delicate bracelet if the sleeves of the sweater are pushed up a bit. Fragrance wise I’m dreaming of Gentle Fluidity Gold, or maybe Eau Duelle — warm, luxurious, elegant. Problem here is that you’d probably have to wear delicate footwear with the skirt, which makes it unrealistic in rainy weather.
Rose in the rain: a delicate, possibly floaty blouse with dark jeans or trousers and leather shoes (preferably some that click while walking on wooden floors). The blouse could be silk, could be lace, could be see-through (red, cream, white…). I’m really into straight leg jeans right now, but skinny would probably work, too (dark blue or black, though). Maybe a fine gold necklace, depending on how far you’re unbuttoning the collar. Hair can be open or loosely pinned up with an elegant clip, or maybe in a (loose) ponytail with a print scarf wrapped around it. You could take a knit sweater here, too, and wrap it around your shoulders in case you get cold — in that case I think open hair looks extra sweet. Maybe I’d do a rosy, delicate fragrance here, Jo Malone Red Roses, NR musc noir rose. Something clear, if that makes sense, light and dreamy. Maybe even extra sophisticated or woody with Bottega Veneta, for example.
Doll: a shirt with a statement collar (can be short sleeved), jeans or dark trousers, a (knit) sweater with a round collar. For the shirt I’m thinking a lace collar, or something embroidered, or maybe Pierrot-esque pleats. Something extravagant that you layer with the sweater. Romantic, playful, but you’re still not going to be cold. Neutral colours (dark bottoms, probably white for the shirt and then brown, beige, black… for the sweater). Hair could be held together by a little bow. No jewellery, except maybe rings or earrings. (Although you COULD also go overkill and do statement collar + necklaces + print sweater, which is also a look, but maybe not quite fitting for this context? If you stick to neutral colours, you could make this cutesy look feel dressed up and serious). Scent wise— Prada Candy? Hypnotic Poison? Eau Duelle? Something warm and sweet but still not too sugary.
The Classic: tweed, cotton, leather. Blazers, blouses, checkered trousers. Turtlenecks. A colour palette of blues or browns. You know the deal. It’s a cute look! Plus, it suits the academic context. To make it less “heavy” (because I do think it works best in winter), maybe try lightening it in places, ie blazer + boatneck collar shirt + trousers/jeans // pleated trousers (black) + turtleneck/shirt (black) + loafers + colourful paisley scarf // blouse + jeans + bow/headband. Scent-wise, I’d probably go with the playful doll options as well, but classics such as In the Library or YSL Libre would definitely be fitting here, too!!
…what a fun occasion!!! I’m daydreaming about glass and bones and muted conversations🌹🌹🌹🌹
