So we don’t know we just had this little character in our head which made a fucked up little art project and we need to remember it. Gonna post it because why not, they are kind tma so yeah. (These descriptions are bad and rudimentary at best be warned)
The twisting halls-
Long halls of doors which branch off into spirals it has striped blue/white pink/yellow wallpaper
The dark room-
Painted with the blackest black with red coloured lantern and figures in the room
The moon pool-
Liminal space with repeating columns with snaking pools of glass and cyan light.
The room of isolation-
It is cold just a chair and glass all around however behind the glass is translucent white glass and the appearance of talking figures in the distance
Immensity-
Below is lit blue glass which goes continuously down, the surface of which looks like the ripples of the sea. Over head is wide and open, full of titan statues, forced perspective and orbiting planets.
The moon chamber-
Mirrors used to reflect any moon light down to a grasping stone hand
Impossible stairs-
A room of Escher like staircases most defying gravity and leading nowhere. Separate but similar to is large barely climbable blocks making the wanderer feel small
The liminal section-
A mash between different corridors with blue sky painted behind windows, massive arch ways and staircases
The watched library-
A place filled with bookcases which arch to the ceiling packed with books of gibberish. Like the library of babble however some parts of the books have diagrams, strange number systems, characters from made up languages and short spouts of paranoia, ideas about being so close to knowing and endlessly being watched. There is a throne of green in there and the walls are littered with all kinds of eyes.
The trinket room-
Filled with all kinds of curious and impossible mathematical objects
The fractal rooms-
A collection of rooms where the floor is large detailed carving of such things as trionskies triangle, the lichen berg pattern and the Mandelbrot set.
The decay room-
Looks dusty old beige, fungi blooming. There is a withered looking sofa
The proximal room-
You climb up through a trap door, which when put down is almost unnoticeable. It is like a classroom, the clock does not tick, the computers time does not change and where all doors and windows should be there is a recession but the wall is smoothed over.
The static room-
An animatronic model slums across a desk sluggishly moving. A coffee cup filled with a psychedelic looking pattern sits before the figure. In front of the figure the only light comes from many old tv screens which are filled with colourful static, bars of colour or neon smiling face with spiralling eyes.
The meat shop-
A butcher’s shop where you see candy coloured gore, a selection of goods sit on plates on display they are caked in resin made piles representing dripping colourful gore. Some are pink others neon blue. a model stands massive cleverer mid-swing the model of the muscular butcher who has too many muscles and extra parts.
The neglected mall-
A series of ruined shops situated in a concreted looking space devoid of customers
The puppets room-
With a massive chessboard floor , chess pieces, two large marionette figures playing while being controlled by a gargantuan spider puppet. Smaller model spiders and webs are scattered about the room as well.
The faceless auditorium-
A theatre stage with rows of seats slanting up and around. Model of performers’ on the stage mid act, audience members everywhere even up in the gods.
Most if not all audiences members have smooth blankness where a face should be, some may or maybe only some performers only have mouths. All performers have masks. The clothing is fancy in style.
The altar-
It’s hard to say how or why you’d believe so but this place was obviously of worship specifically for the spiral. The only room that seems to have directly worship in this place the others all seem like art installations or appreciation of the other factors of fear it was strange to see.

Ficlet Below the Cut!
After the Solstice Holidays and before the New Year, it was rough around the Ministry compound. Not much to do except nurse a hangover and wait for the calendar to refresh you, to wash away the old year. Next year will be different. But right now, I got to lie the fuck down.
Papa Emeritus III would make it everyone's problem and start wandering the halls looking for some last minute pick-me-up from a sibling who was already either exhausted with him or disgusted by him thanks in part to his traditionally ridiculous behavior at the Solstice party. Sister would have nothing to do with him, which of course meant he would resort to the only two people whose job description required mandatory interaction: Sister's Personal Assistant Marian and his protegee Papa Elect Copia.
Which is why during this time Marian and Copia preferred to hunker down somewhere. And when Marian would get so sick of puzzles or hearing Copia crow about The Life and Times of JP Morgan she would demand a field trip.
Luckily at this time of year Copia’s beige LaSabre would have the snow chains on and they could go into town without careening off of a snowy cliff on the way there.
And in the nearest town there was a bar that, for a discreet twenty dollar bill it would be Karaoke Night any night Marian wanted.
“Here we stand…Worlds apart, hearts broken in two! Two! Twooo….” Marian scream-sang the words as they lit up across the video screen. From his place at a nearby table, Copia sighed wistfully. She was a terrible singer, he had to admit. Not a musical bone in her body. But her heart was into it. Always, fully.
Also watching her plush hips sway in time to the music was a bonus.
“Some day, love will find you! Break those chains that bind you! You know, I still love you—” Marian held out her hand to him, flashing a winning smile. Copia’s heart soared. “Even when we go our separate ways!”
A man wandered up to the stage and threw a dollar into the empty plastic pitcher for her. She blew him a kiss. Copia felt a little tinge of jealously bubble up in his throat but it was followed by another thought, this one much more thrilling. Doesn’t matter, she’s coming home with me….
“Closer to the heart! Closer to the HEAAAAAART! YEA-YUH!” And Marian jumped off the small stage, drink in hand, to wander back to Copia’s table and his nest of empty glasses with lemon slices.
“The song’s over?” Copia asked. Watching her sidle over to him, a smirk across her face put him in a certain way. He pretended for a moment she had eyed him from across the bar, a mysterious temptress. He a debonair scoundrel. His heart fluttered.
Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine….
“No there's like a five minute instrumental section, get with the program,” she said. “Here, drink this.”
Copia did what he always did—immediately what was told. He took a sip from the tiny straw. His whole mouth was awash with acrid flames as the liquid scraped down his throat. He nearly arched and hissed like a cat. “W-what was in that?!”
“Long Island Ice Tea—I thought you'd like it. The most alcohol for the least amount of money.” Marian cackled. “Enough with that unsweetened shit. You're up next.”
Copia clutched one of his empty glasses of unsweetened shit. “No thank you. I enjoy just watching you.”
“Why not?” Marian scanned the room. There were a half dozen people besides them on this impromptu Tuesday night karaoke.
“I just….prefer…”
“There's like five other people here.” She gestured towards the bar. “Four now, because I think that guy over there is asleep.”
Copia idly tapped the glass, blinking.
“You know you're going to perform in front of thousands of people soon, yeah?”
“That's different. So many, and they're ah…they're a wall at that scale, really.”
The little [INSTRUMENTAL] blocks started filling across the screen. She’d have to start singing again soon. Marian threw him a determined look. A hungry look. Her eyebrows raised and her mouth quirked. “Drink the rest of that. I'll get you up here.”
Marian turned back to the stage and Copia watched her ass in her tight jeans cross the floor. Imagined his hands across the nipped in part of her waist. He knocked back the rest of the burning concoction and dealt with the pain.
Marian’s solo ended and someone in the darkness actually clapped. She did an ironic curtsy and the next song title appeared across the screen.
Copia bit his lip and gripped the empty glass.
He heard the song. The fake organ refrain. The plinks and chirps of the most perfect arrangement of notes he'd ever heard since Bach felt inclined to start writing.
It was his ringtone for years, when custom ring tones were a thing.
Are they still a thing?
The intro ended, and the lyrics flashed across the screen, unsung. The midi karaoke track blared without any singer. Without anyone to help push the song along and give it life.
Marian stood there, staring into his eyes. Her smirk transformed into a wild, toothy grin.
How dare she.
How dare she let this song run down.
This perfect song.
Copia blinked again, this time keenly aware of how heavy his eyelids had become. He got up and his vision swam a little.
Marian was right. That was a lot of alcohol for a sensible price. And maybe chugging it wasn't the best idea Copia ever had.
The eight inch step up onto the little stage brought with it a surge of emotion. He was already singing the song in his head, trying to keep time. He wanted his intro to be completely on time.
Copia touched her arm with one hand, then grabbed under her chin. Marian laughed, dropping the mic in his other hand. She winked.
The horrible rinky-dink light set up was still unnaturally bright and he shut his eyes tight, leaning into the mic. He had to recover. He owed it to the song. “Don't go wasting your emotion! Lay all your love on me!”
Marian pulled another mic from the plastic pitcher nearby and joined in, trying to mimic the dulcet tones of Agnetha Fältskog the best a mere mortal could. “It was like shooting a sitting duck! A little small talk, a smile, and baby I was stuck!”
Copia made a little pleased grunt, a nod, then swept his arms out theatrically, continuing, “I still don't know what you've done with me! A grown-up woman should never fall so easily…”
Something pressed play in Copia's heart. The program ran without any doubt, dismay—there was definitely something beyond the buzz of a drink mixed with a heavy hand. For some reason he wanted nothing more than to give the performance of a lifetime. He put a foot up on the stool, leaning into the bridge. “I feel a kind of fear when I don't have you near… Unsatisfied, I skip my pride, I beg you, dear!”
Copia glanced over to Marian. She was red faced and giggling, the mic forgotten in her arms. He threw her his own smirk, pointing at her with an accusing finger. “Don't go wasting your emotion! Lay all your love on me! Don't go sharing your devotion…”
Marian stepped forward into him, and his hands automatically wrapped around her. Her fingers brushed the back of his neck and her lips connected with his. He tasted something tropical, warming him on this dreary winter December evening. The empty song continued, abandoned, but her kiss was consolation enough.
Marian couldn't resist a little bite as she pulled away. “Told you,” she said.
“Eh er-well..I was going to pick that one next anyway,” Copia huffed. He shifted his weight and through the bright lights he saw a curious gleam of metal in the far corner. A figure had slipped into the bar and settled behind a table, a large square-shouldered rectangle. With horns. With a metal mask.
“Omega?” Marian stammered. “What—”
There was a theatrically wicked laugh from behind them. Terzo was standing by the stage, leafing through the giant binder of songs and typing in numbers.
“You think you could keep this place a secret forever, fratellino,” Terzo sneered. The Infernal Eye gleamed in its socket. “Were singing Super Trooper next.”

✨Thrift finds!✨
I, unfortunately, didn’t get to buy anything this day, but if I did I think I’d come back to my unit with at least 2 bags!
Thrift #1;
Thermals, a yellow bean bag, and real leather boots.
This chain’s location has less interesting options in the men’s section then store 2; but that doesn’t stop me from coming in. I think it’s a mix of the interesting customer base, funky music playlist they have, and the small furniture section in the back near the bathrooms. Today, they had a little bit more for me to look at.
Here in the grand state of Ohio, it’s tying colder and I need a layer in between my shirts and jackets more often then not. Thermals, oh thermals, how I love them. My mom gave me a thermal blanket when I was a baby and now I associate the waffle weave patterns with calming. The one thermal pictured is the one that fit me really well and I even took a picture in it!
… for some reason, I always forget that store #1 does have fitting rooms in the women’s section. They just kind of blend in with the wall where they are, there is no visual information to say “fitting room”.
There was another white crème colored thermal that I tried on, not pictured, that I didn’t like as much. It was a size too big for me.
The boots read “size 11 US men’s” but fit more like a 9.5 standard. I’m usually a 10 wides, and it’s hard to find anything that isn’t bland just like how some people with bigger boobs have a hard time finding bras that aren’t beige. I took off my boots and tried these bad boys on. Hmm, now I think I know why these were donated; they rubbed and pressed against the top arch of your foot. Maybe if my feet were smaller they wouldn’t do that but small feet get every fun option out there. Well, at least they were in near perfect condition. There was a little, what I could only assume to be, liquid shoe polish or something similar on one of the boots as a “blemish”. If I would have taken them home, I might have considered a light cover of shoe wax to bring the color out and to protect the material.
The bean bag is a bean bag. Fun, yellow, and the cover needed to be laundered. I would have taken that one back to the unit. When I was a young kid, my family used to have bean bags posted in the basement.
Thrift 2;
This store, I swear, always has the better options. Their playlist isn’t as quirky as #1’s but you can’t beat bangers like ‘yellow taxi’ and ‘ain’t no rest for the wicked’. The customer base there is a little older generally, 45+ on most days, but you do see young Shifty Thrifters around my age there because the stuff is that good. There is also an autistic guy there who knows me as “hiker guy” because I come into the store with my big backpack filled with my water bottles and cold weather gear. He’s nice.
This store has so many thermals in stock more consistently. The thermals come in more variety as well; more sizes (plus sizes!), more colors, more thicknesses, more men’s options! I want them all. This one was an outliner because I very rarely will see thermals in stripes. I would have yoinked it if it fit me; I wasn’t going to try stuff on at this location, I think I had just enough time to comb through what they had but was running short on time. I’m obsessed.
Red canvas shoes. These are Airwalk and were my size, though I’m not a huge fan of the (lack of) toe space. I would have tried these on regardless. Still, it’s nice to see shoes that aren’t a “hype” brand that every other person is wearing.
More in pt 2!

Friday, March 22 - Seville to Cordoba
We packed up and left Seville in the morning, winding our way through the old town until we were able to find a few larger streets in the newer section that led us to the train station. Although the official processions in Seville weren't starting until tomorrow, we did come across a children's procession, complete with "police" leading the way through the crowds.
Our train ride was short but crowded, as today starts the getaway for Holy Week, and everyone seemed to be moving on. Cordoba, however, is not as crazy as Seville, perhaps because the procession tradition isn't quite as strong here. Not that they aren't celebrating - there were a lot of red barricades waiting to be set up, and viewing stands in many places, but this is a shadow of the celebration in Seville. We won't be here for Holy Week as we will be in smaller places until the Easter weekend, when we will be in Granada.
Our small hotel is centrally located and we were able to check in before 2PM, which gave us plenty of time to wander around. We have tickets for the Mezquita tomorrow (the Visigoth church turned mosque turned Catholic church), so we decided to go to the Alcazar here today. Unlike Seville, there was no problem getting tickets at the site itself - in fact after determining we were foreigners over age 65, they gave us tickets for free. The palace itself is not terribly large, but the reception hall here was filled with Roman tile works found in the area. There was quite a Roman influence here long before the Moors came, and columns and capitals from the earlier times were widely reused in all buildings.
The Alcazar is titled the Palace of the Christian Kings, but it, too, had Arabic roots. The extensive gardens reflect a lot of Islamic design, and are still quite lovely. We opted not to climb to the highest tower, since it was so crowded, but did go into the tower bases, which were in the Gothic style inside. Like all good palaces, this place is a true fortress, and easily defensible.
Afterwards we wandered over to the Roman bridge, which is pedestrian only and quite impressive. Downstream there were originally four molinas, or mills, and although none are active, two are still in reasonably good condition. The one on the old town side still had a large wooden waterwheel. While looking closely at it, we saw three Siamese cats stretched out on the vanes, enjoying the view and the late afternoon warmth. We crossed the bridge and eventually made our way back across the river on another bridge, and worked our way back to our hotel as the sun was setting. We passed some lovely ornate casas, as well as a Roman Temple, which is currently undergoing some renovation.
Tomorrow we have tickets for the Mezquita in the morning. We wandered around the gardens there this afternoon and look forward to exploring the interior, which is a maze of columns and red and beige colored arches. We also want to stop by Tourist Information and get next day bus tickets out to an archaeological site west of town for Sunday. Cordoba seems to have lots of small winding streets that we also hope to explore.

Chapter 3: Craving.
Before you read:
This novel centers around “the devil’s tango”, therefore there will be lots of implied smut. This series will NOT include smut.
Includes lots of dark themes, read at your own discretion.

Patch lay in his bed, his silk robe covering his damp body. It’s been a little over a week since he’s seen Hex, and it didn’t seem like she was going to text him. Why did he keep count of the days? He didn’t know, maybe he was just excited.
He looked around his room, it was spacious and full of furniture. But somehow, it felt…empty. Patch wasn’t a very clean person, he’d leave clothes strewn around, crumpled papers littering the wooden floor. Along with a series of wrappings and noodle cups.
Despite the mess, he did try to make it livable. If livable meant using scented candles and lamps. Patch wasn’t much of a technological person either, he preferred books over media and instruments over recordings.
Patch sits up, groaning. He looks to his bedside table and examines the stack of books he recently finished. Mostly to give him inspiration for a new album. He tuts, he’s got nothing better to do right now, might as well go to the library.
-
Patch ties his hair into a loose ponytail, and lazily pulls on a beige turtleneck sweater along with some spare jeans he found laying on his work desk. He hovers over the desk, examining the words he had written for a single. Line after line, he felt his mouth turn into a frown, and his heart started to long for something he lost.
Patch shakes his head, pulling his collar up as he approaches his bedside drawer. He looks at the messy list of “to-borrow” books and mentally notes them in his head.
The library was just a couple blocks down from Patch’s residence, the warm light flooding into the streets. It was more or less his haven. It was a quiet place for him to relax, but sometimes the silence made him remember rather unpleasant things.
Patch decided to walk there, he didn’t plan on borrowing a truckload of books nor did he plan on staying for the night.
Patch browses the catalog. Mostly in French, but he figured he should improve his English as well. He picks out books focusing on romance tales, since he was already starting to write love songs.
The library felt very old-fashioned, the walls were made of brick and the arches were wooden. A chandelier hung from the ceiling, and several black couches were littered around the premises. There were a couple modern lamps on the study desks, and it was clear they tried to modernize the vintage library, but upon Fuzanglong's request, they left it be to preserve the sentimental value.
He starts walking back to the borrowing section when he hears a shockwave. It was barely audible, and it seemed like only he heard it. Patch looked left and right, and noticed that everyone was still reading as per usual. The shockwave came from behind the library, and for a moment, Patch ponders whether he should check it out. It wouldn't hurt to look…right? His curiosity gets the better of him and he places his books on a nearby couch, heading towards the source of the sound.
-
“I’ve got something for you to do on the side. He’s scum, and tonight he’s going to try and harm one of my servants through a ‘deal.’ Kill him.”
Hex leans back on the brick wall, eavesdropping on her target’s conversation. Most of it sounded like nonsense, but she waited for a certain sentence that would give her the perfect opportunity to strike.
“Great, pleasure doing business with you.” He says, chuckling quietly.
Hex hears his customer turn on their heels. That particular customer was trusting Hex to kill him before he killed her and their heart started to pound out of their chest. Please, oh please do your job!
Hex was neither righteous nor wicked, but she had a heart. Hex was now on standby, clutching a knife in her right hand, and then,“As if I’d let you take it.”Hex leaps from her spot and holds the handle in her fingers. She places one foot in front of the other, and the familiar feeling of scales growing on her hand signal her to strike. She launches the knife in his direction, aiming straight for his neck. The blade spins and cuts through the air and before her target can react, the knife nearly pierces through his neck. The sheer force of her throw makes an audible shockwave noise and Hex hears a relieved sigh from her colleague.
She tips her fedora at her, and she nods back, her blue horns glowing. Her colleague grabs the briefcase firmly, before jogging far away. Hex then rummages through her pockets, preparing to call Fuzanglong and starts walking back to her car.
That is, until, the door creaks open and a familiar flash of green catches her eye.
Hex whips her head around, her eyes wide in panic, gloved hands still in her pockets.
Patch’s jaw drops and before Hex can push him back into the library, he averts his gaze to the left and sees the disfigured corpse. He nearly lets out a scream when Hex rushes towards him and covers his mouth with her hand. The roughness of her leather gloves uncomfortably rubbing against Patch's soft skin. She grips the back of his head and holds him still, and Patch looks up at her with terror, his eyes observing her face for any sign of mercy.
Hex scans her surroundings briefly (and rather sloppily), and confirms that no one else is a possible witness. Her pent-up rage and stress overcomes her. Before she can think it through, Hex realizes that she’s in a perfect position to end him. Right here, right now.She pulls out a second knife from her shoe, and before she can happily skewer it into Patch’s neck, an approaching figure catches Hex’s eyes. Hex should consider herself lucky for that. It snaps her out of her rage, and she mentally scolds herself. She forgot that the library had several cameras. Fuzanglong could delete the footage, but she’d have to go through one hell of an extermination if it spread through word of mouth.
Hex curses under her breath, dragging Patch away before the passerby could see them. Patch’s face starts to turn pale as he’s dragged into an isolated shelf, a spot where the cameras can barely see them.
Hex lightly shoves him onto the empty shelf, and observes him as he regains his composure. Patch’s lips are turned downwards, and his hair is disheveled. He stares back through squinted eyes, and he re-ties his ponytail.
“You just killed a man!” Patch whisper-shouts, feeling the urge to shove Hex back.
“What the fuck are you so mad for!? That's my job and you're just my target! You’re lucky we’re in this shitty ass library!” Hex replies, sheathing the knife back into her shoe. Patch's heart stings when she calls him "just her target."
Hex grips his collar, and Patch's feet leave the carpeted ground. Hex brings him close, their noses nearly touching.
“I’m going to go through hell and back to kill you tonight.” Hex spits, her grip tightening.
Patch can do nothing except grip Hex’s unrelenting wrists. He can just see the gears in Hex’s brain turning as she starts planning on how to drag him out of this library. He sees a glimmer of ferocity in her eyes and now he really starts to panic. He may have charmed her twice, but he doubts he’s going to see tomorrow. He should scream for help, or at least signal he’s in danger.
But then he sees Hex’s gaze soften, her rage turning into something similar to that of…pity? Patch hesitates, but slowly he stops struggling.
Hex’s grip loosens, and she places him gently on the ground. She rubs her mouth with her hand, and lets out a long sigh. It's obvious she's trying to hold back tears, but she covers it up by turning away from him. She takes off her hat, placing it on the shelf behind her. Hex stares through the endless row of empty shelves, and finally turns back to Patch. Hex leans back, and stares at Patch through half-lidded eyes, contemplating something. Patch stares back at her, and he tilts his head. This is odd. Why is she just standing there? More importantly, was she just about to cry?
Hex looks up to the ceiling, ruffling her hair. She turns her gaze back to him,
“Put a zip on that mouth and don’t tell a soul about what you saw.”
“Do you really trust someone like me to keep a secret?” Patch asks, now this is just confusing. Did he do something wrong? Obviously he was a witness, but she was going to kill him anyway, right?
Hex grumbles, rolling her eyes, “What, do you want me to do something to make sure you shut up? Maybe I should cut your useless lizard tongue off.” Patch snickers, and then an idea pops into his mind. Definitely not an appropriate time, but if he gets to enjoy one more moment with her, why not try? Besides, he’s been waiting for her for a week now.
“How about you kiss me, and then we have a deal?”
Hex’s brows furrow and her nose scrunches. What in the fuck?
She pushes herself off the shelf and walks towards Patch without a word. He slowly steps back until his back hits the shelf, and he starts to regret whether that was a bit too much. Right, now he should really scream.
Hex places her fist above his head, not enough to make a sound, but hard enough that he feels the shelf vibrate. Patch feels a shiver up his spine and cold sweat starts to form on his forehead. Hex shuts her eyes in deep concentration, and purses her lips tight.
“You better not fucking say a word.” Hex pins her hands on his shoulders and leans down, kissing him feverishly. Patch can tell the inexperience in the way her teeth clash with his, she’s so desperate, yet she tries to hold back as if he’s poison. She thinks that this is going to cure her craving, oh how wrong she was. He smiles into the kiss, she’s so adorable.
Patch brings his hand up and starts caressing the back of her head, the sting in his heart fading away. Hex relaxes at his touch and moves her hands to the sides of his head, gripping the empty shelves. She furrows her eyebrows, she’s not doing this right, is she?
Patch chuckles softly, her sleeves tickling his cheekbones. He opens his eyes for a moment and admires the outfit she put on. Seems like she enjoyed oversized fur-collared coats more than suits. He closes his eyes again, blindly using his free hand to grab her tie. Patch starts undoing her tie, tugging on it. To which Hex declines, as she places her hand on his. She pulls her head back, breathing heavily. The warm light illuminates their faces, and Hex looks through much heavier eyelids.
She starts pulling off her gloves with her teeth, not wanting to cause a rash on his face. Hex places it at a distant spot, and returns back to her original position. Only now, she presses her forehead against his. Patch smiles softly, playing with her coarse hair. Could she really be this passive? He raises an eyebrow at the interruption, and Hex replies,
“Not here.”
“Whatever you say, mon trésor.”
-
Patch waves her goodbye, and Hex bursts through the back door of the library, still worked up from the moment prior. She yanks her hat off her head and rubs her temple, did she seriously do that!?
Hex walks over to her car, and bangs her fists onto the hood of the car. She groans and grumbles, pulling off her leather gloves and shoving them into her coat’s pocket. She leans over her car, resting her arms on the polished hood. Hex watches several cars pass by, but the only thing she can hear is her heart pounding in her head, and the long deep breaths she takes.
Hex jerks her sleeves up, revealing a series of scales that popped up. It didn’t appear only when she felt the need to use her power, it would accumulate depending on how she felt. Especially when in a situation like that. One by one, she tears the scales off her arms, and blood starts to trickle out. She throws them to the ground, and the scales clatter as they hit the sidewalk’s concrete.
Hex pulls on her hair, she’s better than this! She's not an amateur, she's been doing this shit for years! She's gotten herself out of tight situations similar to the one just now! She was experienced enough to find a way to drag him out of that library and end his life. Why did the fright on his face reawaken a memory she’s buried 6 feet under? Why did she even take the offer and kiss him!? She’s getting worse, she’s losing control.
No, no. It was just to satisfy her craving and nothing more. Maybe she’ll focus better the next time knowing that she already got a last kiss. At the very least she got to keep his lips sealed and she’s able to report something good to Fuzanglong.
Hex pulls her keys out of her pocket and unlocks the car, finally sitting down. She inhales the scent of smoke mixed with perfume…along with a faint scent of his shampoo. It reminds her of something. Her stomach begins to stir.
That wasn’t enough, she needs it one more time. Just one more time. She’d declined going further than the kiss, since well, it was a public area. But she started to regret that decision. It wasn't the same satisfaction. Perhaps it was a first-timer’s excitement.
How about his house? That’s a private space.
On the bright side, at least there won’t be as much of a commotion when she shoots him in his bed. But how does she set it up so that they’ll be in his house again? She doubts the guards will slack off after what happened last time.
Then, she remembers something.
He saved his number in her phone.
Hex reluctantly pulls out her phone, and starts searching for his contact. She stares at his basic profile picture, scoffing and she starts typing an even more basic greeting.
Hex takes in a deep breath, before hitting send. She watches as the message pops into the chat, one tick on the chat bubble.
This’ll be the last, no more.

Maple Or Oak Kitchen Cabinets
Maple and oak kitchen cabinets are two of the most popular types of wood for kitchen cabinets. They are so similar that homeowners often have trouble deciding which one is best for their kitchen. Both come in a light color, from pale blonde to reddish-cinnamon tints. They also have fine grain, which makes them easy to smooth and keep consistent in appearance.
Red oak
Red oak kitchen cabinets have a harmonious undertone and sweeping arches on the cabinet faces. They are available in sapwood and heartwood styles. Both have a coarse grain and are porous. Both woods are naturally attractive and provide a warm, inviting atmosphere. Choosing between the two styles depends on personal preference and budget.
Red oak kitchen cabinets can be made from milled pieces or unfinished sections. A traditional design involves carving the pieces and staining them. This ensures that the grain of each piece is consistent. Traditionally, red oak kitchen cabinets are stained to a mahogany color. This process involves adding a red dye to the wood to deepen the color. It is important to note that red oak stain is more expensive than white stain. If you do not plan on staining your cabinets yourself, there are furniture stores that sell ready-made red oak kitchen cabinets.
Maple
Maple wood is an inexpensive, high-quality option for your kitchen cabinets. Its natural light color, slight reddish tones, and high visual appeal make it an excellent choice. This wood is also a highly versatile choice because it takes color well, and can even resemble more expensive woods. Whether you want to add rustic charm to your kitchen or give it a contemporary feel, maple kitchen cabinets can help you achieve both of those goals. To get the most from your cabinets, it is important to purchase them from a reputable manufacturer.
Another great quality of maple kitchen cabinets is their durability. Maple wood is perfect for busy kitchens since it is highly resistant to wear and tear. This material does not require extensive maintenance, making it an ideal choice for modern couples with limited time.
Birch
Birch wood is an eco-friendly choice. The sapwood is a beige color, while the heartwood has a slight copper tint. Its fine grain and smooth texture are attractive and make birch an excellent choice for modern homes. Like maple, birch is extremely durable. The wood is resistant to warping, and is also relatively easy to work with.
Birch is a popular wood for kitchen cabinets. It comes in a variety of colors and styles and is known for holding nails well. It is also less expensive than other types of wood.
Cherry
Cherry wood is an extremely versatile material, but it can be difficult to find a uniform shade. The best solution is to purchase all of your furniture from the same source. If that is not an option, you can try to use a variation of hues so that the variation looks more like one solid color.
In order to keep cherry wood cabinets looking their best, you should clean them with a soft cloth and mild dish soap. Always wipe the wood in the direction of the grain, and be sure to dry the area thoroughly afterwards. You can also use a mixture of baking soda or vinegar and water to remove stubborn stains.
Other woods
While oak is an exceptional choice for kitchen cabinets, other woods can provide just as fine a finish. Hard maple is a lighter, finer grain wood, and it works well with stains. Red oak is one of the most durable woods for kitchen cabinets, and its sapwood is white or light brown, depending on the region from which it comes. Both types are good choices for wood kitchen cabinets, but northern oaks are stronger and slower-growing than southern oaks.
Poplar is an affordable, soft wood that works well for cabinetry. Its high workability makes it ideal for novice woodworkers, and it takes paint well. However, it’s important to remember that poplar is highly porous, and a primer is necessary to control the amount of absorption.
Cost
Kitchen cabinet prices depend on the style and wood used. A 10′ x 10′ kitchen might run around two thousand to fifteen thousand dollars. In addition, more expensive cabinets use dovetail joints inside drawers, which add to their price. Other options include combining techniques to make joints that will last for years.
Semi-custom cabinets are another option for those who don’t want to spend so much. These are similar to laminate but cost only a fraction of what custom cabinets do. They also have fewer design options. The materials used to make them cost anywhere from $75 to $200 per linear foot. The price of these cabinets may be lower, but you may have to redo some parts or pay for a handyman’s time and materials.

What are the steps in re-modelling a kitchen
Plan your kitchen remodel. Consider what you want and how much money you are willing to spend.
Locate a contractor. Request bids from as many contractors as possible and then choose the one with whom you are most at ease.
Demolition. This is the fun part! Remove the old cabinets, countertops, or appliances.
Installation. Installation.
Finishing touches. The final touches to your kitchen remodel include paint and new hardware.
Are open-concept kitchens on the decline?
Open-concept cooking is still very popular as they allow for easy access to all the kitchen areas. For a variety of reasons, some homeowners opt for more traditional kitchen designs.
An open-concept kitchen can make it very noisy. Open-concept kitchens can be difficult to clean due to all the cooking fumes and dust that circulate throughout the house.
For families that want to cook together, open-plan kitchens can be a great option. They can be dangerous for children who like to cook and aren’t always listening to their parents. Consider all pros and cons when you are considering an open-concept design.
What is a reasonable budget for a Metro Vancouver kitchen remodel?
A kitchen remodel in Metro Vancouver is feasible within a budget of $50,000. This would cover new appliances, countertops, cabinets, flooring, and lighting.
In the kitchen, where should a refrigerator go?
The refrigerator is located between the stove and sink. It should be placed close to your cupboards so that you can get what you need quickly.
***
Are you required to obtain planning permission for your kitchen renovation?
Electrical and plumbing permits are required for any changes to the electrical or plumbing locations. A building permit may be required if structural changes are being made to your walls.
You can always ask your local authority for clarification if you are unsure about whether you require planning permission.
Can a stove and a fridge be side by sides?
Yes, they can be side by side if there is enough space for both appliances. However, this is not considered a great practice in kitchen design. This can make your kitchen cramped and waste space. It is better to have the refrigerator and stove in separate areas of the kitchen. This allows for a more efficient workflow and makes the kitchen feel larger.

These are ten small kitchen renovations that you can do by yourself.
Small kitchen renovation ideas you can do yourself
A small kitchen renovation isn’t always something you want to tackle. But if you want to make your home feel like a new one, then this is what you should consider doing. There are many things you can do to improve your kitchen that don’t cost too much. Here are some ideas for small kitchen renovations that you can do by yourself.
Install a backsplash. If your countertops and sink are not covered with tiles, then a backsplash can be a great option. A backsplash can add colour and style to your kitchen, while also making it look larger and more spacious.
You can replace your cabinets. Cabinets are a great addition to any kitchen. Cabinets protect walls from spills, splashes, and stains. They give your kitchen a stylish look. If you notice that your cabinet doors look worn out, you should replace them with new ones.
Paint your kitchen. Not only will it improve the look of your kitchen, but you’ll also save money. Paint gives your kitchen a fresh look and modernizes it. Plus, it’ll be easier to clean as well.
You should update your appliances. This will not only increase their longevity but also make them appear newer. If you know exactly which appliance needs to be updated, then you can do it. Or, you can find someone who can install these appliances.
Add a Bar – Another great idea is to add a bar area to your kitchen. You’ll be able to entertain your guests and have additional work space.
A breakfast nook is possible – It doesn’t take much to make a breakfast area. All you need to set up a breakfast nook is a small table, and some chairs. You can even add some cushions to make it more comfortable.
Add a pantry – A pantry is a necessity in any kitchen. It is an ideal place to store food, recipes, and other essentials.
Install an Island – An island makes a great addition in your kitchen. The island adds space to your kitchen and gives you ample work surface. When combined with wood flooring, it can look very appealing.
Add a wine rack. Wine racks can usually be found in restaurants or wine bars. But you can also use them in your home. They come in different designs and sizes. You can choose whatever suits your kitchen best.

“If I go on a date with you, will you bring the dog from your profile picture?” for Rowaelin or Elorcan maybe? 🙂
Puppies - October 15th
Elide Lochan x Lorcan Salvaterre
A/N: I think I’m running a fever and I’m pissed cause it’s not the ideal right now, don’t you all think? But still, I wanted to post this and PP chapter 6, but I cannot for the love of god try and translate that too, so I hope I can do it for tomorrow, in the meantime enjoy this fluffy/cute thing since I’m always giving you just angst.
Enjoy:)
Oh and I think I’m gonna write a part two to this, just like for the Rowaelin one when I get the time and I finish every prompt. Also, again, I’m sorry if this is taking so fucking long, I do understand it’s December and this thing is called October Something so yeah
Word count: 3,883
Lorcan could not get over the fact that a beautiful girl like Elide had agreed to go out with him. Or rather, he could not understand how a beautiful girl like her had asked him out on a date.
A hint of panic crept into his mind, causing his smile to waver when he remembered his best friend's mocking words. "She didn't ask you out, she just wants to see your dogs." Rowan had joked when he had explained why he was taking the dogs for a walk dressed so elegantly.
Lorcan had eyed his black skinny and his beige sweater with an arched eyebrow, feeling sorry for Aelin if Rowan thought that outfit was elegant. He told him he had to meet a girl and his friend demanded to see some photos and Lorcan knew he would never let him out until he pulled out her tinder profile.
Rowan had opened his eyes wide in front of Elide's black-haired, pearly-skinned beauty, then burst out laughing, slamming his hand on his back and telling him he didn't stand a chance with someone like that.
Now, as he walked with Opal by his side with Maya pulling them both way too excitedly, he felt the anxiety grow with every step.
They had exchanged numbers almost immediately and talked for a week, sending pictures of what they were doing and eating, and when Elide had sent him a picture of a meat plate with rice, he had asked her where she was. She had gone out with some friends to her favorite restaurant in town and from there a conversation about their favorite places had started and Lorcan had mentioned that he should try the dish she had ordered, because it was as if he could smell it through the phone. At that point Elide had told him that she would gladly accompany him and Lorcan, like the idiot he was, had asked her if she was serious and she had sent him a message: "If I go on a date with you, will you bring the dogs from your profile picture?"
He had grinned like an idiot, happy to know that she didn't think they were vicious beasts. His two little dogs, two sisters, had entered his life when they were only a few weeks old and now he couldn't imagine his life without them, but sometimes it was difficult to convince other people, especially strangers, that they weren't aggressive and wouldn't tear them to pieces.
They had decided to meet at the Gardens of Orynth so that his two pitbulls could run a little bit free, instead of having to walk around the city with muzzles all the time and Elide had sent him a short video of her jumping happily at the idea of meeting him.
He was looking around for the girl, when he heard someone calling for him and his head snapped in the direction of the Turtle Fountain.
He opened his eyes wide, chuckling in dismay when he realized that Elide was dressed almost exactly like him. A beige sweater tucked on the front of her black pants, torn at the knees, which did absolutely no justice to the legs he had seen her show on her tinder profile. Even the shoes were the same, simple black lumberjack ankle boots, years old in appearance. The only thing differentiating them was the religiously black jacket she wore, which enveloped her figure perfectly.
That moment of distraction in which he admired her cost him the grip on Maya's leash, which with a sudden snap managed to pull him forward and free herself. The pitch black dog ran up to the girl and Elide smiled widely, crouching on the ground and opening her arms. The little dog immediately started to welcome her, licking her face and getting up on her hind paws, scratching her legs with those in front.
Lorcan cursed loudly and ran towards them, Opal looked up at him for a moment, starting to toddle next to him a second later, to keep up.
"Hello you beautiful," Elide was saying, rubbing her hand on the dark fur, "you must be Maya." When the dog started whining, wagging her tail even more, she giggled, "Yes, it's you."
Lorcan was sincerely surprised by the scene, but when Elide looked up, smiling at him with bright eyes, he remembered that he should speak. "I'm so sorry, normally I can hold her." He apologized, scratching the back of his neck.
She shrugged, "Don't worry about it." Then she went back to the dogs, extending her hand to Opal, who seemed just as excited as Maya, but sat next to him. When she sniffed Elide's hand without approaching, she stood up and Lorcan saw with horror that she had mud marks on her pants. He felt himself blush, "Fuck, I'm sorry," and then she handed him Maya's leash, shaking her head. He touched her hand and his brain short-circuited.
"Don't worry," she said smiling and showing her teeth, "really." she repeated when Lorcan glared at the dog. Then she tilted her head to the side, "Hi."
Lorcan smiled in turn, looking at her. God, she was so beautiful.
"Hi."
She leaned towards him, leaving a light kiss on his cheek and immediately returning to her place, adjusting her bag on her shoulder, "I like the way you are dressed, excellent choice."
He was dumbfounded for a moment by her spontaneous gesture. Not that no girl had ever kissed his cheek, but her lips had been so soft and warm against his skin and at the same time so confident and solid. He quickly recovered, pointing to her clothes, "Yes, I must say that your taste is impeccable too."
She smiled at him, shifting her gaze to the dogs for a few seconds, then those black puddles locked on him, "So, how's your day going so far?"
Maya kept circling around her and Opal seemed less and less uncomfortable, her ears now low and her tail moving slightly behind her. The most excitement she would show for a stranger, Lorcan knew. But he was still happy that she was not hiding behind his legs.
He grinned at her, "Very well, I was looking forward to going out with a certain girl," he joked.
Elide snickered, looking him in the eye, "Yes, I was quite excited to meet this new friend of mine too." Then she turned to the dog pen - a huge section of the park reserved for animals, so that people wouldn't bother them while they too were running free. "Shall we go there?" she asked, pointing with one hand.
Lorcan nodded, urging the puppies to walk.
The second he released the leash to both of them, the dogs snapped forward, starting to run in the area. The two of them sat down on a bench just right by the fence and when he turned towards her, Elide was giving him a bright smile.
"What?" he asked her, arching an eyebrow.
She shrugged, "Nothing," she muttered, "I just thought you'd be a lot more chatty, you know."
Lorcan felt himself blush again. It was true, by message and the few times they had called each other, Lorcan had talked a lot and there had never been a second he hadn't had his line ready, but now it was almost as if he no longer had the ability to have a normal conversation. He gave her a frustrated look, "Sorry."
"You don't have to apologize," she giggled and Lorcan felt his chest tighten to that sound. She turned to the dogs when she heard Opal barking and he was breathless when her smile widened even further, seeing the silvery dog running in their direction, "What did you do this morning that was so important that you couldn't answer me?"
He forced his body to relax under her inquisitive eyes, "I had to convince my roommate that calling a plumber to fix the toilet was a much better idea than trying to solve the problem on our own and-". Lorcan puffed, passing a hand through his hair, "Sometimes he can be difficult."
Elide became pensive, "Are you talking about Rowan?"
He nodded, surprised that she remembered the name of his best friend.
"If it's any consolation, my roommates are headstrong too," she said as she opened her eyes wide, "and most of the time it's just as hard as childbirth to have someone else help us around the house," she sighed, "Asterin drives me crazy, too, for other reasons."
Lorcan raised an eyebrow, asking tentatively, "How come?"
He had heard about her roommates, Asterin and Manon, only a couple of times and Elide hardly ever answered his messages when the two girls were present, she always found an excuse to end the conversation.
Initially, Lorcan had thought that Elide simply wanted to spend time with them, but the more days passed the more she avoided him when they were home. He started to think that she didn't want them to know that she was talking to a loser like him, which hurt him more than it should. He was used to people avoiding him on the street and judging him too soon because of his grumpy attitude and the grimace always present on his face, but Elide had found out more about him than any other person had ever done in twice the time and he believed there was a connection between the two of them.
Perhaps it was not the same for her.
When she took a while to respond, he looked closely at her, seeing that she was biting her lip. Maybe he shouldn't have asked. He should have left it alone.
Before he could tell her that they didn't need to talk about it, she said, "She always brings new people home and" she made a noise that sounded more like a grunt than a laugh, "I have absolutely nothing against having a different partner every night," she said.
Lorcan stiffened beside her and saw her eyes open wide. Now that he thought about it, she was hardly ever free in the evening to call him or to stay on face time.
She carried her hand to her mouth, snorting, "Oh God, I didn't mean it that way -" she stopped, "I don't do- I never- Shit." She cursed out loud and took a deep breath, "I meant Asterin is big and vaccinated and can do whatever she wants, I'd just rather she was less noisy." she concluded sighing and carrying a hand to her chest.
Lorcan looked at her gently, "You know," he offered to comfort her, "there would be nothing wrong with it if you had a-" he choked on his words and coughed, "a different partner every night."
The idea disturbed him more than expected. Not because he saw such a thing as distasteful - he, too, had had his golden days when he was younger by Rowan's side - but because the idea of someone else touching Elide as he had only once dared to dream about, gave him chills.
She looked at him carefully, frowning, and he had to shift his gaze to the dogs because he couldn't stand the emotion on her face. He could not decipher it.
He spoke in a low voice when he said, "But I'm not looking for something temporary or a fling, Elide." he gave her a thoughtful look, letting her see the sincerity in his eyes, "I'm quite tired of the occasional stories I find myself in every time."
His mind went straight to Maeve and a shiver ran down his spine.
He felt a hand on his shoulder and when he turned around, she was smiling, "I've never dated anyone, Lorcan," she whispered, as if she was afraid of his reaction. Her hand slipped away from his body and he missed that touch immediately, "I'm serious." Then she grimaced, "I've never even had a boyfriend, but that's a story for another date. Definitely not for our first time out."
Lorcan studied her carefully as Opal approached them and let herself be pampered by Elide. Maya somewhere playing with the other dogs.
She seemed upset and if the deep frown between her eyebrows was not enough to let him realize it, her bouncing leg confirmed his doubts.
Whatever they would talk about that night, neither of them would bring up the subject of relationships, and he felt relieved, if only slightly.
"I didn't want to meddle in your affairs, I just wanted to make it clear that I don't want anything casual." he bent forward, resting his elbows on his knees and crossing his fingers.
He was surprised when she murmured, "Neither do I."
He threw a stunned smile over his shoulder and she took a deep breath. Then she chuckled, scratching behind the dog's ears and making her mumble, "And not to mention Manon." She closed her eyes and dropped her head backwards, without letting go of her grip on Opal's snout, "That girl will be the end of me."
This time he remained silent, waiting for her to continue.
"She's been dating a guy for years and it seems like their fucking honeymoon phase never ends." she grunted, "Between the two of them I don't know which one makes me feel worse about my non-existent sex life."
Lorcan laughed, covering his face with his hands. He liked how comfortable she was talking about such things with him. All the girls he had dated up to that point had been uneasy just because he used bad words in his daily life, but Elide seemed to use them in turn, so she certainly wouldn't dump him and tell him she couldn't be with a longshoreman.
He leaned against the backrest, extending an arm behind her and maybe it was his imagination or maybe not, but it seemed to him that Elide moved closer to him. "I feel you, Rowan and Aelin, his girlfriend, are the loudest couple I know and it's so agonizing sometimes that I have to go to sleep at our neighbors' house. And even there I can still hear them, but at least I can fall asleep." she looked at him amused and shocked at the same time, "They have been our friends for years too," he explained quickly.
Elide nodded, "I have no neighbor to seek shelter from."
He caressed her shoulder lightly, "You can always camp in my living room, they tell me that the sofa is very comfortable."
She laughed, "Thank you," then looked at him, licking her lower lip, "I will consider your offer the next time Dorian or the stranger number two thousand will be our guest."
They didn't notice Maya running towards them until a big heavy black hairy ball threw itself between the two of them and Elide let go a noisy breath, laughing, when the dog gave her a muzzle against her chest with all her strength.
"Maya!" Lorcan scolded her, gasping. The dog wagged his tail on their legs, hitting them both in the face as she turned to lick his face first and then hers. Lorcan tried several times to push her away to prevent her from ruining Elide's light makeup, but the girl didn't seem to care at all and when Opal got on the bench, laying her snout on her leg, Lorcan gave up completely.
They played for more than half an hour with the dogs, even getting up at a certain point to throw sticks and balls and when the sun began to set, Elide turned towards him, short of breath for the various races made to chase the dogs, "What do you say if we head towards the restaurant?"
Lorcan sniffed, trying to catch his breath, "I'd love to."
Putting the leashes back on Maya and Opal, Elide asked him if she could carry one. He didn't even think as he passed her Opal's. Surely if he had let her carry Maya, it would have ended badly and she would have fallen over and he didn't feel like finishing the night in the emergency room at all.
They were walking along the perimeter of the park and Maya was pulling as usual, dictating the pace and Lorcan tried as much as possible to pull her back so they wouldn't have to run, but it seemed impossible. He tried to slow down every time Elide started talking and by the sixth time she had to stop mid-sentence to catch her breath, Lorcan wondered if everything was alright.
At one point, she had taken his hand and now, while they were talking about this and that, he was trying not to squeeze her fingers too hard every time he had to squeeze the leash. The gesture was a spontaneous reaction of his body.
When Maya made them speed up one more time, Elide whimpered and stopped talking, stumbling slightly in her footsteps. Opal turned around in a flash towards her, stopping a few steps in front of them.
Lorcan halted, taking his hand away from Elide's and turning completely towards her. Her breath was wheezing and her forehead was sweating and he could see she was suffering. Panic poured into his stomach.
"El," he murmured that nickname silently, opening his eyes wide in front of her pained expression, "what is it?"
He, too, had been out of breath, but it was already twenty minutes they were walking along quietly, and even though Maya seemed to want to give them a slimming workout, she shouldn't have been so tired.
She closed her eyes, shifting her weight to her left leg and jerked, grunting, "It's nothing." she breathed, looking at him with blurred eyes, "Don't worry," she smiled slightly.
Nothing-
"I shouldn't worry?" he put his hand on her arm, pushing her gently toward a bench nearby, "It looks like you're about to die." the fear was clear in his voice. Elide held back another groan, but Lorcan heard her gasp under his grasp. "Are you having an asthma attack?"
He said the first thing that came to his mind and was surprised to hear Elide giggling beside him.
The second she sat down, her expression changed completely and she seemed to relax. She stretched her right leg forward and his eyes fell on her ankle. Only then, with her pants pulled up slightly and her shoe shifted, did he see the scars that marked her skin. He held his breath.
When he met Elide's gaze again, she had a guilty grimace on her face.
"I'm sorry," she murmured to him.
Lorcan shook his head, closing his eyes, "Sorry, mh, why are you apologizing?"
Elide sighed, passing her hand over her face, "Normally I can walk on it for more than an hour without any problem, but with running before and Maya pulling now, I think I strained it too much and it's really hurting me." In the meantime she had leaned forward, her hands stretched out on her leg while she was massaging her calf going further and further down towards her ankle.
He sat down next to her, making sure that both dogs were sitting on the opposite side of her, so as not to risk worsening her already difficult situation.
He didn't know what to say, too many questions were going through his head.
"Why didn't you tell me? We could have taken a cab or we could have met directly at the restaurant," he told her, putting his hand on her back when, touching the swollen part of her ankle, she whined.
Elide looked at him from under her eyelashes, "Because guys normally don't want to go out with cripples. Or a girl with a cane." Then she turned down again, "And I really wanted to go out with you tonight."
It warmed Lorcan's heart, but he was still annoyed that he made her think he was that kind of person and that she didn't trust him enough to tell him the truth - or hide it from him. Then he felt sick at the thought of how many more times Elide had had to face that conversation and who knows how many more times someone had told her that they were no longer interested after finding out the truth.
He swallowed, choosing his next words wisely, "I don't care if you have scars or if you have difficulty walking without support, Elide." He told her sincerely, "I understand why you didn't tell me, but I'd rather you didn't hide these things from me from now on."
He would not ask her questions about how or why her leg was damaged in such a way.
Elide sat up, covering her face with her hands, "Do you think you could slow Maya down a little bit?" the sound muffled by her fingers, "The restaurant is right on that street." she pointed out a road only a hundred meters ahead. Then she looked at him and her eyes were shiny and Lorcan's throat tightened.
"Are you alright?"
He immediately regretted the question. It was obvious she wasn't.
It didn't seem to bother Elide in the slightest. She nodded, then moved her foot in a circular pattern, biting her lower lip so hard that Lorcan thought she was going to tear it off. "Yes, I'm fine," she said with wheezing breath.
Lorcan looked at her with worried eyes, "You don't look well though."
Elide stared at him taking deep breaths, "Because the bones in my ankle are rubbing against each other and I have no water behind me to take painkillers," she said honestly, "But I can make it to the restaurant and on the way back I'll take a cab or call Manon or Asterin to pick me up."
Lorcan looked at her and then the restaurant, then her again, "Are you sure you can make it?"
"What other options do I have?" she smiled at him.
He nodded, "You're right."
She sighed and put her forehead over his shoulder. It seemed so familiar to Lorcan that he risked tearing the skin off his face so quickly he smiled.
"Can we rest for five minutes?" she asked him in a tired voice.
Lorcan put his arm around her shoulders and held her closer, feeling brave and kissing her temple, "We can rest all night as far as I am concerned."
Elide made a verse of approval and when Lorcan looked at her, he noticed that her eyes were closed and although she still had a sweaty forehead and a grieving expression, she was smiling.
They sat down for more than five minutes and only when Elide was able to take more than five steps without flinching, Lorcan decided that they could go to the restaurant. An arm tied around her hips to support her and the two leashes tightened in his free hand.
He did not know for what grace of God, but even Maya seemed to have realized the situation, and had slowed down her pace drastically, trotting alongside Opal undisturbed.
Inay, the owner of the place, had made them sit inside, near the large window overlooking the river, and there, Elide and Lorcan enjoyed the first of a thousand other dinners they would share.

We have philosophy and theft
rating: teen and up audiences
shipps: janus + patton (moceit)
word count: ~12.2k
summary: Soulmates share the same birthday. That is a fact. The hard part is finding the one who really is your match among so many others. Patton has never met anyone who has the same birthday as him, and when Virgil mentions that he knows someone, Patton insists that he set up a date. Except that things take a turn and crimes are commited.
warnings: there is a scene where a dog is locked inside a hot car but he turns out fine ok, i promise
author’s note: this is a general content submission for @moceit-appreciation-week . i originally wrote this in my native language, brazillian portuguese (that if you happen to know you can read it here) and then i translated it and made some adaptations, so... i don’t know, just keep that in mind
[Read it on AO3]
"When is your birthday again?'' Virgil asked calmly, raising his gaze from the computer screen before him. He was sloppy sitting on the padded bench near the cafeteria wall. Above him, hanging on a brick wall, was a huge blackboard displaying a weekly menu written in chalk.
"On the first day." Patton answered, leaning over the square table positioned between him and his friend. He placed his head in one hand, holding the cappuccino glass with the other near him.
"May?''
''Yeah.''
Virgil turned to the computer screen, and Patton could hear the press of keys amid the buzz of the other customers.
"Why is that?''
"So I can write it down." He clarified, and in front of him, there was a huge monthly calendar filled with all the things he needed to do and what was the deadline to accomplish them. Virgil struggled to keep his life organized as much as possible. He was also ignoring the fact that the day was April 13, which meant that the month had begun two weeks ago. The small floating arrow sailed to the bottom of the screen, and he selected the day in question, marked with a letter ''S'' above it. "It's on a Saturday.''
Patton sighed, staring at the marks of deterioration on the wooden table on which they were.
''Yes, it is.''
Virgil turned to him again, raising his head and watching him beneath the purple locks of hair. He stretched his fingers above the keyboard, causing the black nail polish to camouflage between the keys.
"What?"
''I'm going to be twenty-nine, and I haven't met my soulmate yet!" Patton was pitiful. He opened his arms cautiously on the table, lying on it and avoiding reaching the glass that was near him and his friend's computer.
Virgil sighed briefly. Every year the same thing happened, and by that time, he already had a mental list of arguments to offer Patton.
"Well... You know... sometimes people have to try more than once." He shrugged. "Everyone thinks that as soon as they meet someone who has a birthday on the same day they will be perfect. It's a great way to delude yourself. Like it's fate or something." He smiled ironically.
''Yes, I know, but I've never MET anyone who has a birthday on the same day as me!'' Patton stretched both hands, next to Virgil's computer, leaning his chin on the table. ''It's complicated.''
Virgil rolled his eyes and lowered the notebook screen, watching Patton and his honey-colored curls. He knew this was something that bothered Patton, though he couldn't say the same about himself. His expression turned into a grimace, and he lifted the computer screen again, placing it between him and Patton so that it would prevent eye contact.
"I may... know someone who has a birthday on the same day as you."
''What?" Patton rose from the surface immediately, unable to see Virgil's face due to the grayish plaque in front of him. ''Virgil?"
''Um?''
''Who is it?'' He rose from the seat, leaning part of his body over the table, and positioning his face above the screen. He pressed his fingertips next to the camera of the device.
"Who's what?'' Virgil asked, staring at the calendar to avoid Patton's supplicant gaze.
"The person you know who has a birthday on the same day as me.'' Patton clarified, and fought against his instincts that resembled that of a feline wanting attention: were it not for Virgil's fingers on the keyboard, he would have already closed the computer that created an obstacle between them. "I'm down for anyone. You know that."
''Yes, I know, it's not that, it's... is that... You know what, never mind, you're not going to like him." He spoke, denying with his head.
"No, I want to know!" Patton insisted. "Please?"
''Oh, it's just... he's kind of...'' Virgil began, seeking a justification, and finally looked at Patton, who kept all his concentration on him. I don't know, I don't trust him.''
"Why not?" Patton frowned delicately.
''I don't know. It's just... a feeling, I guess.''
''Okay... what do you know about him?"
''That he is a lawyer and that his name is Janus."
''Oh, cool!'' Patton leaned his head on the back of his hands, above the computer monitor. "What else?"
''That's all, actually."
''That's all?''
''Yeah. I told you, I don't trust him. Besides, I think he hides stuff.''
''What kind of stuff?''
Virgil grumbled, gesturing vaguely, and tried:
"About himself?''
Patton contemplated briefly and then shrugged.
"Maybe he's only reserved. Like you.''
Virgil made a face and returned his concentration to the computer.
"So... Are you going to give me his number?"
''Patton... "
''Please?" He smiled, and quickly added, "I'm the one who has to like him, not you. Pretty please?''
Virgil and Patton stared at each other and Virgil remembered why he wanted to avoid eye contact. No one could say no to Patton with bright brown eyes and wavy hair as adorable as a puppy asking for your food. Finally, he gave in.
"Ugh, all right. I'll talk to him. I'll see what I can do.''
''Yay!" Patton clapped his hands. "Thank you!''
''Of course. Whatever.''
With the online calendar still open in front of him, Virgil added a note to remember talking to Janus about the situation.
Outside the Museum of the Classical Age was a large, wide staircase made of whitish marble. At both ends, above the steps, were the handrails leading to the museum's small entrance platform. In the center of it, a third handrail was installed, standing out due to its contrast in relation to the rest of the façade. It had a smaller thickness, being made of iron in black color, and was used much more often by visitors of the daily.
Patton used the first of the steps as a seat, next to the entrance door and next to the left handrail. The shadow of the architecture spread to the pavement ahead, partially taking the path to the staircase and the outdoor parking lot, distributed on the sides of the entrance. The sun shone fervently, but that did not prevent the low temperature or the icy breeze that accompanied it. People would come in and leave the establishment, and Patton was waiting for a face that wasn't familiar to him. The high sound of a tire caught his eye, and he — like other visitors outside — turned to the right, in time to watch the driver of a red pickup truck suddenly stop, too close to a man crossing the parking lot. Immediately, the driver threw several offensive words at the man, who stopped where he was and stared at him for a moment, before walking again and heading to the museum's staircases. With this, the focus of the others also dispersed. Patton followed the man with his gaze as he approached and climbed the steps quickly. The print on his clothing became a blur, being possible to identify only the figure of two wavy things crossed one over the other. He went into the museum, while the driver had been lost sight of, and the situation that had barely begun had already been finished.
Patton waited a few more seconds, preventing his thoughts from focusing on the movement outside that dramatically diminished, and on how no one had addressed him. Hearing a delicate tinkling, he exuded, picking up the cell phone that had the screen facing down in his lap.
''date janus!!'' it read as the contact name at the top of the screen. It was from two minutes ago, at 11:12 am.
''I'm here'', one of the messages said.
''I believe in a section just about the coliseum,'' said another message then.
Below these two, there was an attached photo that appeared to have been taken at a certain distance. It showed the end of a corridor that contained a passage to another room ahead, wider. The walls were of a clear beige tone, and instead of works referring to the time, they were decorated with documents extended and protected by glass. On the sides of the entrance to the next room were two chandeliers, each lifting a small transparent lamp. And among them... there was a woman who spoke and over-gesticulated, actions easy to detect due to the smudges that her face and arms had become. In front of her and with her back to the camera, was a group of teenage students, occupying fully the entrance. On the right, near one of the chandeliers, was a second woman who was also partially with her back to the camera.
Patton stretched his legs, rising from the smooth marble surface and turned around. With a few steps, he walked through the huge double door that was completely extended to the inside, as if with open arms awaiting the visitors.
To the left of the lobby was a large circular reception. From where he was, Patton could see at least three different employees serving people. He thought about joining them and the small line that formed — which he would do on other occasions — but this would probably take several minutes. He analyzed the rest of the environment, the gaze floating over other individuals who walked around the room, the most distant velvety benches leaning against the wall, the huge staircase that stood both to the left and to the right, by the large arches that indicated the entrance to other corridors near where he was. Uncertain, he crossed the room toward the corridor on the right, and came across the same beige walls with chandeliers and the class of students who occupied the passage. However, there did not seem to be anyone else present besides those who were previously in the photo. Patton glanced at his cell phone, which remained with the same three messages, and turned distractedly to look around.
"Boo!" In front of him, a man arose, leaning toward him.
Patton jumped back, giving a sharp scream and taking both hands to his chest reflexively.
The man laughed, and Patton did the same, embarrassed.
''I'm sorry." He said by mere formality, in a drawn tone of voice.
''Of course." Patton sighed, relaxing his shoulders and straightening his jacket with one hand, while the other held the phone. He laughed one more time. "Very... sneaky, aren't you?''
''Yes.'' The man agreed, and he analyzed the boy in front of him from head to toe.
The first thing to be noted in Patton was the huge colored jacket he wore. The colors of the piece alternated between red, blue, green and yellow, and its fabric was soft and comfortable, preventing the wind from passing through it. Underneath it, he wore a white shirt that contained two bottoms above the right side of the collarbone, both of which were composed of colored stripes. One of them had a pink stripe followed by a yellow and a blue one. The other, a little further down, had a black stripe followed by a gray, a white and a purple one. The shirt bar was placed inside the high-waisted style jeans, in a shade of grayish blue. He wore yellow all-star sneakers that covered his ankles, but even so, the man was almost certain that he wore different socks. One of Patton's hands still held one side of the jacket tightly, and he noticed his nails painted in different colors: dark blue, light blue, purple, and black. The hand that held the phone was partially hidden for him, so that it was only possible to see the fingernail of the thumb painted red.
He had brown eyes, protected by the glass and aluminum skeleton that was his rounded glasses and long eyelashes. Beside the nose, the upper part of the cheeks was decorated with small brown dots scattered horizontally. His skin was clear, his lips pink, and on his face fell wavy locks in a shade of faded brown. Apparently, the numerous decorative fruit hair clips were not enough to contain them in place.
The man blinked repeatedly, his face inexpressible. Patton seemed to have come straight from a children's show in which he was the host and had chosen his own costume, resulting, surprisingly, in a beautiful outfit being worn by an even more beautiful person. Lovely, perhaps, was the most appropriate word. ''Cute'' would also work.
But instead of saying any of these things, he remained silent, until finally asking:
"It's Patton, right?"
''Oh... Yes, it is." Patton gulped and held out his hand to him, looking at the other man before him.
His skin was clear, but not as much as his. This was obvious when one noticed the spots on the right side of his face, whose tone was closer to pink than beige. Above them, his hair was partially shaved on the side, and the dark brown locks were reserving on the left side, long enough to reach the length of the cheeks. At the height of the neck, it was possible to see the white collar of a shirt, hidden by the black sweater he wore on top. His hands were involved by the pockets of black pants with pleats, and he wore brown combat boots.
"Janus." He said, shaking Patton's hand and revealing the yellow glove he used.
Patton alternated glances between the three things that most intrigued him in the person in front of him: the eyes, the stains on his face and the gloves. Before he could decide which one to ask first, another detail stood out for looking familiar to him, and he meticulously observed the pattern of two dark green snakes crossing one over the other in Janus' sweater.
"Hey, weren't you in the parking lot earlier?"
''What?" He asked, slightly confused, before remembering. "Oh, yes, I was. I love the experience of almost getting hit first thing in the morning." He mocked, and Patton noticed it was the same lazy tone of voice he had used to apologize moments before.
"Yeah... there are people who get very angry in traffic anyway." Patton changed the subject and stood beside Janus, only to discover that he was reasonably short compared to the other man. In front of them, the student class was gone. ''Shall we?''
That said, the two walked down the rest of the corridor and entered the next room.
By the next thirty minutes, Patton had already made two puns about them being in a museum.
He maybe got confused during a third attempt that resulted in comparing Janus to a work of art. Maybe.
Either way, Janus tried his best to hide his laughter and apparent redness on his face. He failed miserably in both.
Janus had the impression that Patton was looking too much at him, specifically at his face. He decided to clarify that the spots on the right side were the main symptom of a skin disease called vitiligo.
Patton said he had freckles on his face, though this was evident.
Janus mentioned having a pet snake named Ophelia. Patton assumed he was joking. Two factors made him realize that he was not: Janus' expression and tone of voice remained the same throughout the conversation, and Patton's suspicion that he had a forked tongue.
Not that he was looking at Janus' mouth or anything.
Patton was a high school philosophy teacher.
He liked plants. He talked about the collection of succulents that stood on the window sill of his room, and their names: Angela, Ashley, Audrey, Alice, Amelia, Aurora, and a few others. The latter was in reference to the Disney princess.
Janus was pretty sure he'd mentioned an Ariel too.
Janus liked the Marvel movies.
Patton preferred DC movies. His favorite was Shazam.
They talked about how Tony Stark and Bruce Wayne were alike.
Patton told about how his students appeared with the so-called new ''memes'' every week, and that he didn't quite understand how they worked. This did not prevent him from using them the wrong way through his attempts. Sometimes these same students spent most of their class with their heads down, and Patton knew they were having a bad day. So he didn't bother them.
Janus told of the questionable things his colleagues in the legal field did. Among them, having love affairs with clients who were in divorce proceedings, and obtaining evidence by illegal means. He wouldn't admit it, but it was fun to be able to tell these things to someone who wasn't part of the business —and who therefore couldn't use them against someone he knew. Patton seemed shocked by the reports, but also interested.
An hour and a half later, the number of people visiting the historic facility decreased considerably as most went out to eat.
Patton stopped in the lobby, away from the doors. He had taken off his colorful jacket and now held it over his forearms, gathered near his body. He turned to Janus, not far from him. "There's a diner down the street." He remarked, drawing the attention of the other young man who looked up at him. "Do you want to go eat? We can get there by foot.''
''Yes." He said without thinking. But who could say no to Patton? Patton who had his nails painted in different colors, Patton who had chosen an outfit that seemed to have come out of an eighties themed movie, Patton who had named his plants, Patton who laughed at the very puns he made at any opportunity, Patton who cared for the wellbeing of his students, although it was not his responsibility. Patton.
He was so sweet. So lovely. Optimistic. Polite. That wouldn't work. Janus had to make something about that. He just didn't know what yet.
They went down the street, heading for the establishment. The silver clouds hid the sun, and the winds remained sharp enough to cause chills. They walked side by side, most of the time in silence, and Patton pointed to some birds that were landed on the electric wire across the street. They arrived at the site and outside the gravel floor formed an outdoor parking lot, similar to what the museum also had. Further away from the entrance, Janus noticed a red pickup truck, too much like the one he had seen earlier when he arrived at the museum. Ahead of him, Patton entered and held the door for him, and the two took slow steps as they entered the venue, searching for an empty table amid the crowd of customers. Quietly, they went to the service desk to place their orders, infiltrating amid the lines that were mixing due to being side by side. Patton raised his arm to fix the sleeve of his shirt, but in doing so, he accidentally hit someone next to him who was coming in the opposite direction.
"Oh, I'm sorry!" He spoke immediately, gathering his arm close to him and placing his hand on his opposite shoulder.
''Yeah, yeah, whatever." The man in the plaid shirt grumbled. Getting as close as he could to the service desk, he sneaked through the thick line. Still, he wasn't far from the couple. "Lady! Hey, lady!''
Patton took a step to the left, approaching Janus who now stared at the intruder with his eyes half-closed.
The man began to call out for the attendant at the counter a little further from him, saying something about having received the wrong order. The attendant politely asked him to go to the end of the line, but the same could not be said of the other people around who were waiting to place their orders. Unidentified voices were startled in the buzz, complaining about the man and also asking — demanding — that he go to the end of the line. The man ignored the claims, insisting that he was paying for an order he had not made, while the attendant reiterated that they had delivered exactly what he had requested. Janus and Patton watched the situation unfold attentively.
Looking at the man, Janus recognized him as the same one he had seen earlier, the same driver of the truck who had almost run him over in the morning. And with that, he had an idea.
"I can make a new order for you. " He volunteered, and the man finally turned to him, analyzing him from head to toe.
"Aren't you that guy who was at the museum?''
Janus blinked repeatedly, giving a fake smile.
"I was... Oh, my God, you were the guy in the pickup truck, weren't you? I'm so sorry, I wasn't seeing where I was going!" He explained, taking one hand to his chest dramatically.
Patton looked at the two, confused, but paying more attention to janus' tone of voice, which had suddenly changed. It was completely different from the dragged tone he had used during the time they were in the museum, as if he were an actor playing a role.
"Yeah... you should pay more attention anyway."
''Oh, I will for sure, sir...?'' Janus asked, offering his hand to him.
''John." He greeted.
"Is that short for Jonathan?''
''No. Just John. And you're...?"
''Oh... I'm...'' Janus kept his forced smile, and looked away. Through the big window in the back, on the other side of the room, you could see the street outside. A large bus stopped at a traffic light, the ad on the side displaying Louis Vuitton's new fall-winter collection. Quickly, he added: ''Louis."
''Um. " John made a grimace and examined him again. ''Such a cocky name, huh?''
Janus' smile was slowly becoming terrifying.
"What's wrong with your order?" He asked, changing the subject, and felt Patton gently pulling the sleeve of his sweater.
"I had ordered a large burger and a medium Coke, and they gave me the opposite.'' John offered the receipt to Janus, who checked it superficially.
''Do you know what? I'll make this order for you again, and then it's all settled. You don't have to pay anything else.
"Um. Alright." John agreed with the same angry expression that Janus had seen all day, and walked away, ending the conflict in line.
Janus watched as he disappeared into the crowd, and his fake smile turned into an expression of repulsion. He disguised it before turning to Patton, who called him:
"What are you doing?" He had furrowed eyebrows, looking between Janus and the path John had taken before he disappeared. "Your name's not Louis."
''Well... Maybe he's just having a bad day." Janus shrugged, turning his eyes. "Maybe he just needs... a good deed.''
Patton made a grimace, uncomfortable, and the two moved forward as the line progressed.
"I didn't like him. He almost ran you over."
''Pff, don't worry.'' Janus guided, gesticulating vaguely. "We're not going to be in his company for long anyway.''
Arriving at the service desk, Janus only made John's order. Patton barely paid attention to his, ordering quickly. Leaving the line with the orders, the two met the man at a table. Janus and Patton sat side by side, while John stood at the opposite end. When he began to eat, his manners towards the two changed, and he magically became more polite. He began to chatter, for the most part, complaining about his work that neither Patton nor Janus had paid enough attention to know what it was. Janus stayed as far away from the table as possible, strategically holding one of the menus raised in front of him. Patton ate only half of his order, looking out the window most of the time. About half an hour passed with Janus presenting a friendly personality.
"Well, the chat is fine, but if you'll excuse me, I have to go to the bathroom.'' John informed as he rested his hands on the table and stood up.
"Oh, is it?" Janus looked up at him, as did Patton. "Don't you want to leave your stuff here? I'll take care of it.''
John frowned and looked at Janus and Patton.
"My stuff?''
"Yes," Janus shrugged. "It's going to be quick anyways.''
John hesitated, but gave in. Sticking his hands in his pockets, he left his wallet, cell phone and car keys on the table. Janus glanced at the belongings.
"Five minutes." John said, moving away from the table.
"Five minutes." Janus echoed, following him with his gaze.
John went to the back of the diner and walked through a door, disappearing from view.
Janus turned to the table and, with one hand, took the cell phone and keys. With the other one, he held Patton's.
''Let's go.'' Janus stood up quickly from the table, taking with him a Patton who intertwined his own legs due to the rush.
"What?! Where?!
''Let's go!'' Janus insisted as they passed through the cafeteria's front door, practically running.
They crossed part of the parking lot until they stopped near a red pickup truck. Up close, it was brighter, cleaner. Janus placed the keys into the lock and turned them, unlocking the car with a muffled sound. He opened the door and walked in, and Patton, on the passenger side, did the same without thinking. With the two inside the car and with their respective doors closed, Janus put the key in the ignition and turned on the car, immediately backing up and leaving the cafeteria parking lot. In a matter of seconds, the establishment was left behind.
The road followed mostly straight, with both Janus and Patton silent. As they stopped at a traffic light, Janus turned to Patton, who analyzed the inside of the car. He could practically see the gears spinning on his head as he absorbed what had just happened. Janus put on his seat belt, and they started walking again. Patton blinked repeatedly, lowering his head.
''Janus?'
''Um?''
''Did you stole a car?'' Patton asked slowly, turning to the man next to him.
''Huh... it's not stealing, actually. Robbery committed without violence is theft.'' He glanced at Patton, and he looked both angry and confused.
''This is no time for word games!'' Patton protested, and fixed his glasses in place. ''Stealing is a crime!''
Janus rolled his eyes.
''Yes, I know.''
''Then why did you do it?''
''Why not do it?'' Janus asked, smiling.
Patton stammered.
''Because it's wrong!''
''Well, 'John' kinda deserved it.'' He sneered, throwing the man's cell phone on the dashboard in front of Patton.
''What? No!''
''We both saw how he almost ran me over. Honestly, we are doing society a favor by taking this car away from him. Who knows who else he might hit?''
''No! This isn't - we shouldn't - he - you can't just go around stealing people's stuff!''
''I just did.'' Janus shrugged, and glared at Patton. ''Put on your seat belt.''
Patton huffed and did as requested, frustrated. He wanted to protest, to get out of the car. But of the many thoughts swirling around in his mind, none of them could turn into a coherent verbal sentence. And the car was moving, and he had just put on his seat belt. Janus' reassurance that he had just committed a crime did not improve the feeling he had of anger and shock. Janus smiled, opening the window on his side, realizing how his plan to push Patton away was working. Patton crossed his arms, turning his attention to his window.
''I don't like this.'' He grumbled, and Janus didn't answer.
A few minutes passed, and they continued their journey in silence, as Janus pondered where they were going now.
Slowly, Patton turned to the center of the car and took a closer look. Next to the steering wheel was a small glass display accompanied by several buttons and a few square holes below. He blinked repeatedly, bringing his hand to one of the round buttons. He carefully turned it and a low noise sounded.
''There's a radio.'' He pointed distractedly.
Janus alternated glances between the road and Patton who was playing with the buttons on the device. Patton turned one of them, and a man began to talk about how the city government used the money it received from the citizens. He turned the same knob one more time. A female voice sang a song that, from the instruments, seemed to be from the 1950s. He switched to another button, and a host announced that the guest about to give an interview was a female singer he had never heard of. He did this with the other three buttons, until the stations ended and the radio returned to its initial silence. Patton held up a long white cable that was plugged into one of the radio's inputs near the buttons. It had electrical tape on the end that was loose. Patton leaned back in his seat again, holding the cable close to him.
''I wonder if it's supposed to connect to the cell phone.''
''You can try it if you like.'' Janus said, not caring much.
With some difficulty Patton took his cell phone from the back pocket of his jeans and plugged in the long cable. Immediately, the small squared-shaped radio display showed the words "music library". Patton glided his fingers across the screen, searching for something. He gently touched the surface with his index finger, and seconds later the sounds of a drum and a guitar began to sound from the radio. Janus frowned as another guitar solo followed and a man began to sing.
Life's like the road that you travel on,
when there's one day here and the next day gone
Sometimes you bend and sometimes you stand
sometimes you turn your back to the wind
He looked at the radio display, which named the song as 'Life is a Highway' by Rascal Flatts. Next to him, Patton began to do what he deduced was a dance from the unusual movements. A few more seconds passed, and more and more of the music seemed familiar, until Janus ventured to ask:
''Isn't that the music from Cars? The Disney movie?''
''Yes, it is!''
''Oh, my goodness.'' Janus rolled his eyes and then turned his attention back to the road.
''Do you like it?'' Patton asked, smiling broadly and leaning back in his seat.
''Not exactly. But it doesn't bother me either.''
''It's pretty good!'' Patton said, doing random dance steps, as far as his belt would allow.
Janus sighed, choosing to let Patton have some fun.
The song ended, and before it could start again, Patton picked up his cell phone and selected a different one. It started with a soft piano and a female voice singing, until the rhythm changed drastically, becoming more agile.
''What is that?''
''Holding Out For a Hero!'' Patton replied, smiling.
''But that's not Bonnie Tyler's voice.'' Janus pointed out.
''Oh, no, it's Shrek's version.'' Patton explained, looking at his cell phone and at Janus.
''Oh...''
Patton watched Janus as he exhibited no reaction to the music. Instead, he kept his attention on the cars passing in front of him, trying to join them. When the song ended, Patton selected a different song. And another. And another. And another. And in none of them did Janus show any interest. Nor did Janus mention the fact that they were all part of the soundtrack, themes, or created specifically for film or television animation work. At one point, Patton sank down on the bench he was on, his knees pressed against each other.
''What kind of music do you like?'' He asked, brushing a strand of hair out of his face and with anticipation, since it was a topic that had not been discussed during their date at the museum.
Janus turned towards him and watched Patton with his cell phone on one leg, still connected to the car radio.
''Oh, you're not going to like it.''
''Oh, c'mon, I wanna know!'' Patton insisted, and bowing his head he muttered: ''I didn't like that you stole a car either, but we're here.''
Janus sighed, and as they approached a traffic light, he held out his hand toward Patton, who handed him his cell phone. He tapped the screen a few times, and without saying anything, handed the phone back to Patton as the melody started to play and the car started moving again.
The music started with a piano and violin, and soon a woman's voice began to sound, singing lazily. Patton glanced at the radio display, which read "Black Hole Sun" by Haley Reinhart. The drive went on, with the music being the only noise between them, and Patton turned his attention to the man next to him.
The sun swayed distantly behind him as they passed different buildings and residences. The open window gave way to a strong breeze, which made the long strands of his brown hair frame his well-defined face. He kept only one hand wrapped tightly around the black leather steering wheel, while his left elbow rested above the window sill and the white sleeves of his shirt swung gently in the wind. The elastic band ran across his chest, sinking down and camouflaging itself to the black sweater, cutting through the snake print. He had a look of serenity, fixed on the road ahead. He was not bothered by the fact that he had stolen a car, Patton noticed. Not only that, but he was confident. And that was enough to create a charm. Patton mentally listed the things he knew Janus was, for sure, by now. Lawyer. Thief. Charming. He smiled softly, and Janus turned to him, somewhat embarrassed to catch Patton studying him.
''What?'' he asked, frowning.
''You have one eye of each color.'' Patton pointed calmly.
He really did. Patton had already noticed that Janus had different eyes when they were at the museum, but he couldn't say specifically how. Now he had found out: one of them was brown, while the other was green.
''Oh... yes, I do.'' Janus touched his hair, making a failed attempt to get it out of his face. ''It's called heterochromia. It's the only hetero thing about me.''
Patton's smile widened twice as much, and he leaned toward Janus.
''You made a pun.'' he said, holding back his happiness.
''What? No, I didn't.'' Janus staggered, alternating his attention between the road and Patton beside him.
''Yes, you did.''
''No, I didn't.''
''Yes, you did!'' Patton started to laugh, grabbing Janus' arm with both hands and squeezing gently.
Oh, no, Janus thought, watching Patton with wide eyes. He had made a mistake.
Patton kept laughing for the next five minutes, and slowly calmed down. When he stopped completely, he was leaning against the window beside him, which remained closed. He sniffled, taking a deep breath as he pulled himself together and some random song played at a low volume on the radio. There was a brief silence. Suddenly something caught both boys' attention: from the cell phone lying on the dashboard of the car, which previously belonged to John, came an alarm. Except that it was no ordinary alarm clock alarm, whose purpose was to wake people up, but the sound was more like radar. Patton reached out and grabbed the device, and with it closer, the two of them could see the blinking red dot in the center of the screen. Around it, circular waves were forming, and at the top of the screen, there was the phrase ''Find my phone''.
''Oh my God! Oh my God, it's tracking us! Now what?'' Patton asked, looking around frantically for a solution.
''Give it to me.'' Janus asked, switching hands on the steering wheel and extending one of them to Patton. He handed him the cell phone and Janus glanced at the screen.
''Dammit. I thought it would take him longer to do something about it.'' He spoke before tossing the device out the open window without hesitation.
In shock, Patton looked at Janus and the outside of the car, which had turned into a straight deserted road. He gulped.
''You threw the phone out of the window.''
''I did. Problem solved.'' He smiled sarcastically, looking at Patton. Patton sighed and leaned back in his seat.
''Right.''
The drive went on without any major problems.
About fifteen minutes later, Patton turned to Janus after spending most of the time looking out the window.
''Are we going somewhere?''
Janus stammered, being taken aback.
''Why?''
''Because... there is a mall nearby.'' Patton said, pressing his index finger against the glass of the window.
''You want to go to the mall?''
''Oh... yes.''
''With a stolen car?''
''But-it's just-there's-'' Patton sighed. ''I planned on doing more after the date, I didn't know it was going to last all day. And I didn't know you were going to steal a car!''
Janus looked at Patton and outside the window behind him. Not far away was a large building that was expanding horizontally.
''Fine, whatever.'' Janus turned his attention back to the road and turned on the right turn signal.
As they drove out of the parking lot, inside the building, and towards the stores, Patton told that he had gardening as a hobby — something that Janus had already noticed when he mentioned all the succulent plants that had names beginning with A. He wanted to plant a vegetable garden, but didn't know much about how to do that yet. And for that, he would need the proper tools and clothes. The first place they went was a clothing store. Once there, they eventually drifted off as Patton looked for something specific and Janus just didn't care to keep up.
He wandered distractedly around the store, looking at the clothes on display. There was a wall filled only with women's suits, starting with neutral colors of gray and dark blue. Then a red one appeared. A pink one. After that followed several that had their lapels and pockets printed for some reason. On the other side of the store, a large table displayed themed shirts with Star Wars character prints. Next to it was a second table that was almost identical, but this one contained Harry Potter themed clothes. A long rack had colorful bomber jackets, alternating between one color until it got to the jeans jackets with kitten prints and pieces of pizza on the back. Hanging high above it was a section of long trench coats in solid colors. Most were beige or gray, and investigating to the back of the rack, Janus came across a yellow one. Not a neon, vibrant, strong yellow, but a more subdued, darker, a shade of ''mustard yellow,'' as some palettes named it, considering that the color was closer to brown. Stretching out his arm, he removed the hanger and examined the overcoat. Its fabric was dense, warm, and it had small strips to be buttoned on each sleeve. At waist height there was also a long belt in the same color, which was tied at the back with a bow. He pulled it over his forearm and walked back through the store to a section that contained several long-sleeved blouses. Some had a high collar, others had zippers on the back. Apart from these details, they didn't vary much. He looked through the pieces, and finally decided on a light gray one with a turtleneck. He held both the jacket and the blouse together, stretching them out in front of him, observing how they would look together.
''Boo!'' said a voice behind him, at the same time as a pair of hands grabbed his shoulders and immediately released them.
Janus hissed, making a sort of high-pitched animal-like sound, and gathered his arms closer to himself. Beside him, Patton appeared, laughing with one hand in front of his mouth and holding clothes with the other arm.
''What was that? It sounded like...'' Patton sniffled, catching his breath. ''One of those little snakes! With a rattle!''
''Oh, it's you.'' Janus sighed and rolled his eyes, ignoring Patton's comment and the fact that he felt his cheeks warming up.
''That was payback for the museum.'' Patton said, and crossed his arms over his chest. ''Listen, I'm going to try on these clothes, so...''
They looked at each other in silence.
''...You're staying here, right? In the store?''
''No, Patton, I'm strategically waiting that you're busy so that I can run off and leave you alone like I did with a stranger in the diner.'' Janus spoke ironically, and in silence, Patton watched him with big eyes, worthy of a Japanese animation. ''I'm not leaving without you, okay? If that's what you want to know.''
Janus looked at the small set of clothes he had in hand and at Patton beside him, before stretching out his arm and offering them to him.
''Try these on too.''
Slowly, Patton took both pieces and examined them.
''Why?''
''Just try them on.'' Janus shrugged.
''Okay...'' Patton added them to the clothes he already had with him. ''But then I'll choose an outfit for you too!''
''What? No.'' He grimaced.
''Yes! It'll be fun, come on!''
''We're not going to play dress-up.''
''Why not?''
''Because!''
''You picked out a little outfit for me.''
Janus grumbled, stuffing both hands in his pockets.
''Fine.''
''Yay! Come on, come on!'' Patton jumped up and down and gestured for the young man to follow him. Grudgingly, Janus did so.
The two of them walked through the different sections of the store, as Patton analyzed the most diverse items. A light green shirt with buttons down the front and a pineapple print caught his eye, but after one more look at Janus, he returned it to the rack. It was so easy to find something Patton liked; as long as it looked colorful or fun it was more than enough. He also resisted the temptation to pick up a salmon colored t-shirt, whose right side pocket had a flamingo design, so that it looked like the animal was stored in the small compartment.
''Oh, what do you like to do?'' Patton asked suddenly.
''What do you mean?'' Janus frowned, intrigued.
''Sort of like a hobby. I like gardening," he exemplified what he had said before. ''What's your hobby?''
''Oh... uh...''
Patton stopped by another booth where long-sleeved shirts were spread out.
''I play the piano.'' Janus finally answered. Not that it wasn't true, but it was more of a... half-truth.
''Really?'' Patton turned to him, smiling and holding one of the shirts from the exhibit close to him.
''Yes, really.''
Yes, he could play the piano. And yes, in terms of personal interests, he was busier producing an outfit identical to that of Marvel's Doctor Stephen Strange. His fingers had seen more needle points than piano keys in recent years, but that was not relevant.
''Oh, that's so cool! I kind of started to learn how to play the ukulele, but...''
''...But?'' -He arched one eyebrow.
''I don't know, I'm not very good at it. I guess it's just lack of practice.'' Patton remarked as he watched a mannequin a little taller than he, wearing a scarf and unfurl the cloth from around his neck.
Janus squinted his eyes and made a mental note of the fact.
They walked around the store for a few more minutes until Patton chose a hat. He held up three of the pieces he had with him and held them out to Janus.
''There! Oh, we can play catwalk too!''
''No, no... no...'' Janus shook his head, holding the clothes that Patton had handed him, and the two of them headed for the fitting rooms. ''No, we'll see about that after we've tried them on, okay?''
''Okay!'' Patton agreed, and, getting out in front of them, took the first fitting room he saw with the door open, closing it behind him.
Janus stopped where he was and sighed, coming to the conclusion that living with Patton was like living with a child. He didn't know exactly what opinion to form of this, but he chose to put the thought aside and walked into one of the fitting rooms.
A few minutes passed before Janus heard Patton coming out of his fitting room, sounding surprised. Wearing the clothes Patton had chosen for him, he opened the door and stepped out of the booth. With his back to him, Patton stood in front of a large mirror that took up the wall at the end of the fitting room aisle. His new light gray turtleneck blouse was tucked into his jeans, and over that, he wore a large dark yellow trench coat, the length of which extended just below the knee. The pants left a small part of his legs showing, so that the yellow all-star sneakers that went down to his ankles drew attention.
''I look like someone...'' Patton thought to himself, moving from side to side and letting the bar of his jacket swing. With a jump, he turned to Janus behind him. ''The tenth Doctor! From Doctor Who!''
Janus looked him up and down, and the only similarities to the character in question were the coat and the sneakers. Even though part of the outfit had been chosen by someone else, Patton still looked like the host of a children's show.
Patton also looked at him, bringing both hands to his chest, below the collarbone.
''You look so pretty! And stylish!''
Janus didn't answer, and instead crossed his arms, cutting off eye contact. His clothes still had dark shades. Like Patton, he was still wearing the same pants and shoes that he had chosen for the date at the museum — a black pair of pleated pants and brown boots - and like Patton, he had also tucked the dark gray long-sleeved shirt into his pants. The difference was that Janus had two extra accessories: a plaid scarf, in beige and black, and a black straight-brimmed hat, large enough to partially cover his face. Janus hoped that it was doing its job, and he put it on, pretending that his face was not getting a blush.
Excitedly, Patton stood next to him, and then the two of them were standing facing the mirror, where the critical difference in height was noticeable.
''It's such a serious outfit... but I like it!'' Patton spoke up, with both hands in his jacket pockets. ''Why did you choose this?''
''I thought it was something you could wear to class.''
''Oh!'' Patton wiggled again, smiling. ''I hadn't even thought of that, but it's a good idea.''
Patton turned to him.
''How about you? Do you like your outfit?''
''No, it's hideous.'' Janus answered lazily, rolling his eyes.
''Oh, really?'' Fearful, Patton leaned back, analyzing his choices. ''I thought it was nice... I tried to pick something that would go with you. I can try again if you like.''
Next to him, Patton looked genuinely upset, and a wave of panic rose in his throat.
''It was irony.'' Janus clarified. ''I liked it.''
''You liked it?'' Patton asked again, and he nodded. ''Yay! I'm going to go change, and then we can go, okay?''
''Sure.'' Janus agreed as Patton returned to the fitting room.
But when Patton left the booth for the last time, wearing his normal clothes — the ones he had chosen for the date at the museum — Janus was still wearing the clothes he had chosen. He was leaning close to the door of his fitting room, now open, looking distractedly at the yellow gloves he was wearing. Patton stopped next to him, in silence, until he asked:
''Aren't you going to change your clothes?''
''Oh, no, not really.'' Janus said, picking up the shirt and sweater he had been wearing. Before Patton could say anything, he added while smiling charmingly: ''Shall we?''
Patton frowned, but agreed, and they walked back to the store. Janus was further ahead, while Patton looked for the cashier, and he almost bumped into Janus when he stopped abruptly.
''Excuse me, sir," a young man started to say, approaching Janus and looking at him. He wore a badge hanging around his neck. ''Are these the clothes from the store?''
Janus turned his face slowly in the opposite direction. Next to him was a stand of sunglasses, and he looked at them closely.
''Look, sir, it is against store policy to wear the clothes outside the fitting room without paying first.''
Silently, Patton looked between Janus and the store employee. Janus took a pair of white, black and gray sunglasses, whose lenses prevented others from seeing his eyes, and put them on.
''I'm going to need you to go back to the fitting room and change, otherwise it will be characterized as theft, and I'll have to call security.'' The boy explained calmly, and Patton's eyes widened.
Janus wove the plaid scarf around his neck and adjusted his hat, so that it hid the part of his face that was closest to the employee.
''Is that so?'' Janus asked, with a heavy foreign accent.
''Yes.'' The boy confirmed, holding both hands in front of his body.
Janus grumbled, turning his attention back to the sunglasses stand.
''If I had known that I would be treated like this I wouldn't even have come here. But please, call security.''
The employee blinked repeatedly and leaned toward Janus.
''Excuse me?''
''It's just that where I come from it is very normal for customers to wear the clothes they are going to buy while they are in the store.'' Janus continued sarcastically and with his accent. ''I personally think it is absurd to be called a thief when I have done nothing wrong!''
Behind him, Patton was starting to make faces due to his confusion. From the stand, Janus picked up a pair of sunglasses whose lenses were blue hearts, and offered them to Patton.
''Try this one on, honey, it suits you.''
Hesitantly, Patton took the glasses and held them out in front of him.
''You’re still violating store policy.'' The employee repeated.
''Are you really going to call security on me?''
''I'm sorry, and you would be...?''
''Alfred Hitchcoppolucas," Janus announced, sliding his index finger and thumb along the brim of his hat. ''Director of Psycho Godfather Wars.''
In shock, Patton approached Janus and the clerk.
''Excuse me...'' He started to say, but Janus purposely put himself between him and the other boy.
''Please, do call security. So this could end up in a lawsuit against your store, it will be so much fun!'' Janus, Alfred said, gesturing and smiling exaggeratedly, pretending.
''Oh... oh.'' The employee was flabbergasted and started stammering, trying to fix the situation. ''No, no, that won't be necessary, sir. I am so sorry for the inconvenience, actually, you know what? You don't have to pay for anything. I'll turn off the alarms in the store, so you can go, okay?''
Patton watched as the scene unfolded before him, and of all the absurd things to question, he wondered if Alfred Hitchcoppolucas was a real person.
''Oh, really?'' Alfred asked with a strong accent and a drawling tone of voice.
''Yes, really. I'm very serious.'' The employee started to walk away, almost tripping over his own feet. ''I'll do it now, okay?'' He said, and with that, disappeared from sight.
Immediately, Janus broke off his fake smile and turned to Patton. With one hand he lowered his sunglasses minimally, looking Patton over them.
''You were saying?''
For the second time that day, Patton had more than one thought swirling around in his head, and there was a certain difficulty in turning them into comprehensible sentences.
''Who is Alfred Hitchcoppolucas?''
''A director.''
''No, no, you're not Alfred something, you're Janus...'' Patton interrupted himself when he realized that he didn't know his last name. ''Why did you lie to him?''
Janus shrugged and smiled.
''Because I can.''
''No! No, you can't just go around tricking people!''
''Why not?''
''Because it's wrong!'' Patton justified, and at the same time Janus repeated the exact same thing, but as if it were a question in a debauched tone.
''Think through the bright side,'' One by one, Janus removed the paper labels from the pieces he was using. ''You're saving money.''
With a few steps, he stepped aside and picked up two ecobags that were displayed on a low hanger. He put the tags and his original clothes in one of them, and offered the other to Patton.
''Shall we go?''
Hesitant and a little upset, Patton held up the bag and put all the products he was holding into it. He considered heading to the cashier and paying for them anyway, but before he could find his location in the place, Janus started walking again, heading toward the store doors. Patton followed him a reasonable distance, and as they walked through the silent detectors, Patton updated the list he had in mind.
Lawyer.
Thief.
Charming.
Liar.
And despite the questionable attributes, his indecision about what opinion to form of Janus remained haunting him.
Hours later, they left the mall, and the sun had given way to the moon and the stars that kept it company.
The outside was cold enough to give it goose bumps, and as they made their way to the pickup truck, Patton gripped the ends of his windbreaker jacket, ready to zip it up. But before he could do that, something else caught his eye. He stopped where he was, noticing how on the other side of the outdoor parking lot, a little way off, there was an enclosed car with a large dog inside. He stood there for a few seconds, watching the scene and walked hurriedly towards the car, not even noticing that Janus was walking steps ahead of him.
''... And that is why carrots are the worst vegetables.'' He concluded a monologue, and immediately looked both ways, noticing Patton's absence. Janus spun around in time to see him walking away toward an unfamiliar car. ''Patton?''
The young man continued walking.
''Patton!'' he called, and walked quickly in the same direction.
''Hi.'' Patton greeted the animal in as calm a voice as he could while resting his hands against the closed windows of the car. The dog inside, a golden retriever, turned to him, panting and blinking. ''Are you stuck in there?''
Patton touched different places on the car door, as if it would magically open for him. He reached for the handle and pulled, but nothing happened. It was locked. Of course it was locked.
Janus caught up with him and stopped beside him.
''What are you doing?'' he asked exasperated.
''There's a dog in here.'' Patton said, turning briefly to him, his eyebrows raised together. ''He's hot.''
Janus looked over to the side of the car, seeing the dog sitting in the back seats.
''And?''
''We have to get him out of here!'' Patton again touched random parts of the door. ''But there's no way, it's locked!''
Patton considered his options. He could try to go back to the mall and find the owner of the car — and the dog. But how could he do this? The person could be anywhere, in any store. What if it was an employee? He could have been working by now. There was no personal information on the outside of the car, and trying to find the owner by blindly searching for him could take hours.
Janus frowned and looked at Patton and the golden retriever inside, his pink tongue falling out of his mouth.
''It's not our dog,'' He thought about saying, which meant it wasn't their problem. But neither was the red pickup truck parked a short distance away, and that hadn't stopped him.
Besides, Patton remained with the same expression of sadness and concern on his face, touching the car door.
Janus bowed his head and thought about what they had. The keys to the pickup truck. Cell phones. Eyeglasses. A hat. Some gardening tools, small but firm, just like the car keys. A jacket. An overcoat, long and dense. Belts. Sneakers... Sneakers. His gaze hovered over Patton's pair of all-star sneakers at ankle height, the yellow glowing against the darkness of the concrete floor at night.
''Take off the shoelace.''
''What?'' Patton turned to him, confused.
''Take off your shoelace.'' Janus ordered, raising his head and looking at him.
Patton hesitated briefly before leaning against the car door, bending forward and raising one of his legs to chest height. After a few seconds of struggling, he pulled out the long line and held it out in front of Janus.
''Keep an eye out for anyone coming.'' He said casually, taking the shoelace.
''What do you mean?'' Patton muttered, standing on tiptoe and looking around, not knowing exactly how to warn him if anyone approached.
Janus glanced down at Patton's feet, interlacing the shoelace, noticing how one of his socks was green, and the other, red.
The thread now had a small knot with an opening in the center, which could be closed by pulling on one side. He slipped the shoelace through the doorway, and luckily the rubber didn't stop it. The dog, noticing the narrow line above him, raised his long nose and sniffed it briefly, not caring about it. Janus crouched down, facing the door and moving his arms carefully as he lowered the wire. Standing next to him, Patton alternated glances between what Janus was doing — which Patton didn't understand anyways — and his surroundings, nervously. He couldn't see any people outside, but entering the parking lot, a car sped up the path behind them, and Patton's eyes widened.
''A car just drove by.''
''Was it a police car?''
''No.''
''Then it doesn't matter.''
Janus kept his gaze fixed on the inside of the car. The dog sniffed the shoelace once more as it hovered over the door latch pin between them. He closed the knot around the latch tightly and pulled both ends up, causing the small latch to lift.
The door was open.
He exhaled and stood, and Patton smiled at him, hopefully. Janus pulled the handle and the door opened, and immediately, the golden retriever jumped out of the car, but he couldn't get very far: strapped to the headrest of the seat, a leash held him down. Janus leaned forward, looking for the clasp on the dog's collar, but before he could find it, Patton moved in front of him and rested one knee on the car seat.
''Patton!''
''Wait!'' He brought both hands to the piece of steel supporting the headrest. It took a few seconds for his vision to adjust to the pitch inside the vehicle, and meanwhile he was digging his nails into the leash, pulling it in different directions. Eventually, it began to loosen, and written in blue on the red fabric was a name: Steve.
With the leash in one hand, Patton got out of the car and took a few steps back. Once he had moved far away enough, Janus took the shoelace and lowered the pin again, closing the door and locking it. The two, now three, crossed the parking lot quickly, avoiding running. They opened the back of the truck, and with a few finger snaps above the compartment, the dog jumped in. Now almost at his height and with better lighting, Patton noticed that the collar around his neck also had the colors blue and red. Its pendant consisted of circles in those colors with the addition of white, and in the center, there was the silhouette of a dog's paw.
Steve, he thought. Blue, red and white. The yellowish fur. Steve in reference to Steve Rogers. Captain America.
They turned around, getting into the cab of the car, and with the same agility they had left the diner hours earlier, they were now leaving the parking lot behind.
Janus drove in silence, without a destination in mind.
Patton bowed his head, looking at his white shirt that now contained gray stains that he didn't know how he had gotten.
The drive went on for a few minutes, until, looking out the window, Patton recognized the road they were passing by.
''There's a bridge up ahead.'' he pointed out. ''We could stop and let Steve drink some water.''
Janus frowned, glancing at the back of the car.
''Steve?''
Patton nodded.
''It's on his leash.''
They arrived at the mostly deserted spot. Janus stopped the pickup truck above the bridge, and Patton was the first to get out, pushing his sneakers against the cold, polished stone floor. He went to the back of the car, opening the cargo bed and letting the dog out. With the leash in hand, they went around the bridge and down a small slope beside the architectural support that consisted of sand and brush, approaching the river of running water below. Steve immediately went towards the water and, as expected, began to drink. Patton let go of his leash and sat down on the ground, putting the laces back on his sneakers, listening to the engine of the truck still running.
The wind echoed in his ears, and he regretted not having zipped up his jacket when he first thought of it. The bridge, as well as its edges, were lit only by the weak grayish light of the moon above them. In the navy blue sky, tiny dots flickered and a few clouds were lurking. Patton watched the surrounding flora, high enough to be at his knee height, and hoped that no animals would appear. Most people would worry about snakes in an environment like this, maybe frogs because it was near water, but Patton's biggest concern was spiders. To his right, at a higher level, the rocky bridge cast a shadow over him.
The roar of the engine stopped and footsteps approached.
''Partners in crime?'' he asked in a drawling tone of voice.
Patton let out a sharp cry and turned back, seeing Janus standing a little above him, arms crossed. He stood erect, and his plaid scarf swayed gently in the wind, which in the poor lighting made him look more like a mysterious silhouette than a human being.
''What?''
''Partners in crime. '' He repeated and shrugged. ''You stole a dog.''
''I didn't steal a dog.'' Patton defended himself, standing up and brushing the sand out of his pants. ''I just... took it for a walk.''
''Without asking the owner or even knowing him?'' Janus squinted his eyes.
''I just...'' he stammered. ''Yes!''
''No, you stole a dog.''
''You stole a dog!''
''I stole a car, that's different.'' Janus waved one hand. ''It was your idea.''
''You opened the car.''
''Okay, we did it together, whatever. It's still a crime just the same.''
''No, it was for a good reason! He was in the heat, I just wanted to get him out of there!'' Patton slurred his words, pointing at Steve behind him.
''I never said it wasn't for a good reason. That's not my point.'' Janus looked at Patton and smiled briefly. ''We're alike. Isn't that what you wanted?''
Patton looked at him and remembered the two questionable attributes that were on his mental list of things he knew for sure about Janus. Thief. Liar.
''No, we're not. We have nothing in common!''
''Wrong. We have philosophy and theft.'' Janus went down the small sand hill, stopping in front of Patton.
''No, only bad people steal!''
Janus brought one hand to his chest, pretending to be offended.
''Patton! What about the people who live on the street and steal to survive?''
He opened his mouth, ready to retort, but no words came. After a moment, he resumed, denying with his head:
''No. No, that's not what I meant. No, that's enough.'' Patton moved his arms from side to side in front of him. ''We'll come back, we'll return the dog, and we'll return the car, okay?''
''Oh, please...'' Janus started, but Patton turned his back on him, approaching the riverbank and stopping near Steve.
Patton's idea of going back and returning the collected belongings without permission was ridiculous, to say the least. Especially considering that they had managed to leave the situations behind without major consequences. There was no point in denying the obvious — that crimes had been committed — and Janus didn't really understand why Patton insisted on doing that. With his eyes half-closed, he watched Patton and thought. Patton also insisted on the statement that stealing made you a bad person; committing crimes made you a bad person. Janus knew that things were not that easy, as black and white. And it suddenly occurred to him that maybe Patton didn't know that.
The icy evening wind ruffled their ears and crickets began to echo around them, and Janus let the room be filled with the sounds of nature as he thought.
''Would you agree with Jean-Jacques Rousseau when he said that man is good and society corrupts him?'' He asked, pronouncing the words slowly and clearly.
Patton looked at him over his shoulder.
''I don't know. Maybe?''
After a moment, he continued:
''And would you agree with Thomas Hobbes when he said that man is essentially evil?''
''Would you?'' Patton asked him, his worried look gradually softening.
Janus took a few steps and stopped beside Patton, staring at Steve as he drank the water.
''No, not with either of them.'' Janus turned to him, his colorful eyes in a state of serenity. ''Psychology, philosophy, anthropology, all these fields have the human being and its existence as their focus of study. Ever since we existed, we have been trying to find the answers to these same questions. Are we good? Are we bad? Why are we here? And these areas are still relevant today because we don't have a yes or no answer. Because after centuries of investigation, we have come to the conclusion that humanity is complex. It is to be expected that these questions will have complicated answers, if such answers ever exist. No one is inherently good or bad entirely, Patton. You can steal and still be a good person. It just depends on how you see yourself.''
Patton nodded, muttering something incomprehensible. Quickly, Janus continued:
''But you know... if you really want to know if you're a ''bad'' person...'' Janus offered his hand to him, the yellow glove standing out in the darkness. ''We can find out together.''
Silently, Patton smiled softly and took Janus's hand.
On the floor, Steve turned toward them. He shook himself, causing water splashing from his beard to hit the two men next to him. Janus protested, complaining, but Patton didn't much care.
''Can we go now?''
Patton leaned forward, taking Steve's leash, and the trio returned to the bridge and the car above them.
''What is the next stop?'' Patton asked.
''I don't know," Janus shrugged. ''Do you want me to drive you home?''
''I'd like to, but...'' Patton glanced at the back of the car. Behind Janus, Steve's mouth was open and the wind was against his golden hair. ''I'm not sure how I'm going to get in with a dog that size.''
Of course, getting home was not exactly the problem. The problem would be how to justify to the neighbors why he had an adult golden retriever with him, in case someone saw him.
Janus remained silent, searching for a solution. Patton picked up his cell phone, pressed his fingers against the screen a few times, and moments later, announced:
''There is a hotel nearby that accepts dogs. The Sandman Inn.''
''Yes, but do they accept large dogs?''
Patton swiped at the cell phone screen.
''Yes, they do. It's not too far away.''
Janus agreed, ready to follow the GPS directions, when Patton grabbed his arm.
''Wait!''
''What?''
''There's a supermarket here!'' Patton pointed, and across the street, a large sign with its lights on indicated the store was open. ''Let's stop here. It's gonna be just a minute.''
''What for?'' Janus asked, already turning the car around.
''To buy things!'' Patton simply said. When they pulled into the parking lot, Patton got out of the car, but Janus didn't move. ''Aren't you coming?''
''No. You can go.''
''Okay.'' Patton agreed and quickly drove away, approaching the doors that opened automatically for him.
Patton took a basket from the stack next to the door, and walked through the aisles occupied only by merchandise. The cleaning products section was the closest, and he walked through an aisle that contained fabric softeners and clothes nails.
Lawyer. Thief. Charming. Liar, it echoed through his mind, and Patton wondered what answer he would provide when Virgil asked him if he liked Janus.
He turned right, now passing through a corridor that contained brooms and insecticides.
Technically, their date had been extended for the rest of the day. Technically.
Patton glanced at the products in other aisles as he walked in front of them. Pasta. Canned goods and seasonings. Dairy products. Frozen foods.
Would he want a second date? Assuming they didn't get caught for the thefts, of course.
Patton entered an aisle of children's birthday party supplies.
But as Janus himself had said, not all people who did things that were considered bad were really bad. The case of the homeless people was a good example.
He took a card with colored candles and put it in the basket.
This line of reasoning would work for Janus as well as for him.
Patton took a few steps forward and picked up plastic plates and cutlery, adding them to the basket so that they would keep the candles company.
So... it was all relative, really. Janus had kind of explained that too.
Patton returned to the frozen food aisle. He ignored the large transparent doors that displayed ice cream of the most diverse brands and flavors. He stopped in front of a large booth displaying ready-made cakes, and chose one whose frosting consisted of granules and cherries, and placed it in the basket.
There was a decision to be made.
When Patton came out of the supermarket with a shopping bag in his hand, Janus was leaning outside the car, petting Steve.
''Ready?''
''Ready. We're good to go.'' Patton confirmed, smiling.
Once again, they returned to the cab of the truck and went on their way.
The Sandman Inn was open twenty-four hours a day.
It was a clean and quiet place, and the carpeting in the lobby was red and gold.
They checked in, and the employee handed them the key to Room 9E, with two beds.
Janus and Patton stepped into the elevator. Steve's leash in one hand, the keys to pickup the truck in the other, the shopping ecobags on their shoulders, and the grocery bag in the other hand.
Arriving in the bedroom, they left both bags with clothes on the bed. Janus removed Steve's leash, and Steve began sniffing around the room. Patton approached a small table that was in front of the beds and put his bag on top of it, removing the groceries one by one. He removed the plastic cover from the cake and placed it in the center of the table, opening the carton of colorful candles.
''Can you turn off the light?'' he asked, and a little hesitantly, Janus did so. Outside, the grayish moon produced a faint beam of light that invaded the room through the window, preventing them from being completely in the dark.
Patton sat down in one of the chairs, and Janus removed his hat and joined him on the other side. Steve also joined them, lying down at Patton's feet.
At the cashier, Patton had picked up a box of matches at the last minute. He had spread four of the colorful candles on the edge closest to Janus, and was now lighting them.
''So,'' Janus began, with a terrible posture in his seat. Strands of his dark brown hair fell over one of his eyes. ''I suppose we'll be saying goodbye to each other in the morning?''
Patton smiled quietly, placing the rest of the candles at the end closest to him.
''No, I don't think so.''
Janus squinted his eyes. He leaned forward and, with one breath, blew out the candles that were lit. Immediately, Patton began to light the ones he had positioned last.
''I'm down for a second date, actually.'' He explained, his gaze focused on the wax and the fire. ''I think there's more about you that I don't know.''
''I do cosplay, if that's what you want to know.'' Janus looked away, crossing one leg over the other.
Patton stopped where he was and laughed, making a mental note to return to this subject later.
''It was you who suggested that we find out if we are bad people together.'' he said, finishing lighting the candles.
They both stared at each other for a brief moment, before Janus asked, in his usual lazy tone:
''I'm stuck with you now, aren't I?''
Patton propped both elbows horizontally on the table. He looked at his cell phone beside him, and the 11:59 on the lock screen turned into 00:00, accompanied by the date May 1.
It was midnight.
It was his birthday.
It was their birthday.
''Happy birthday, Janus.''
Janus lifted the corners of his mouth minimally, just enough to go unnoticed.
''Happy birthday, Patton.''
And Patton blew out the candles, leaving them in the dark.

Read part three here!
A/N: Here be smut! 18+ only, please. :) Enjoy and let me know what you think!
Your GPS navigated you to the address Steve had texted you that morning, and you immediately felt out of place as your old, battered Impala puttered down a road lined with well-manicured brownstones. Each one was a little bit unique, but they all had the same thing in common – they were wicked expensive, located in one of the nicest areas of Brooklyn. You had passed a boujee private school, two quaint shopping centers, and a small dog park on the way, and now you were parallel parking in front of Steve’s house.
After reaching into the backseat to sling your duffel bag over your shoulder, you turned on your heel and stared up at the three-story building. Planter boxes lined every window on the street-facing side, and you smiled at the thought of Steve planting and tending to the ferns growing within them. The door had been painted a bright, cheerful red, and an American flag was flapping just to the left of it. You had to chuckle a little at the cliché, but you knew that Steve was an old-fashioned guy. It was easy for you to picture him making this house his home.
You climbed the front steps and knocked on the door, adjusting your knit cap as you waited for your boyfriend to answer. The wind was biting as it whirled through the streets of New York, and a quick glance skyward told you that snow would be coming soon.
You were broken out of your thoughts when the door opened, revealing Steve smiling down at you from its other side. He was dressed in a cable-knit sweater that was the same color of his eyes, and your mouth watered when you saw the steaming mug of coffee in his left hand.
“Hey, doll,” he greeted you, and you immediately stepped into the warm space, pressing your forehead against his chest.
“You’re so warm,” you groaned, eliciting a chuckle from him.
“Glad I can be of service,” he joked. The door clicked shut behind you as his free hand rubbed your back. “You’re cold as ice, hon. Come in; let me take your things.”
Steve slid your duffel bag off of your shoulder, waving at you to follow him into the living room. Along the way, your eyes skimmed over the space, taking in the pictures he had dotted around the walls. You paused at one that showed him sitting on a couch with some very familiar faces; Tony Stark was sitting directly to Steve’s left, holding his hand up behind his head to give him bunny ears. Then, there was the famous Natasha Romanoff, who had her legs draped over Hawkeye’s knees. Thor – the actual Thor - was standing behind the couch holding a massive stein of beer, a large, dopey smile spread across his face as he posed for the camera. And, to top it all off, Bruce Banner was sitting on the floor in front of Mr. Stark with a shy grin.
“That’s me and the original team,” Steve said from behind you, and you jolted at how close he suddenly was. “We took that about a year after the Battle of New York. Tony’s always throwing these parties around holidays.”
You smiled, turning back to face him.
“You guys look like you’re all good friends,” you commented.
“Yeah… We’ve had our ups and downs, but we all know that we have one another’s backs.”
You grinned and wrapped your arms around his neck, playing with the baby hairs growing at the base of his skull.
“You need to tell me about some of your adventures sometime,” you remarked. Steve laughed and squeezed your hip, pressing a quick peck to your lips.
“You’re my favorite adventure so far.”
“Oh, my god,” you laughed. “That was so cheesy, Steve!”
He smiled sheepishly before stepping back, leading you towards a crackling fireplace waiting just in the other room.
“As cheesy as it is, it’s true.”
You nearly melted once you laid eyes on Steve’s living room. The space was incredibly cozy; there was a large, beige sectional sofa to one side, and a matching loveseat was placed directly in front of it on the other side of the hardwood coffee table. To the left, there was a large bay window that had been visible from the street, and there was a window seat built into it full of decorative pillows. Bookshelves lined the opposite wall, and you recognized one of them from the picture Steve had sent to you during your first ever conversation.
The fireplace, though, was truly the heart of the space. It was large and made of stone, and above the mantle, there was a huge painting of the New York skyline done in abstract shades of brown and red. As you walked further into the room, you felt the heat from the fireplace wash over you, and you didn’t hesitate before taking a seat on the floor in front of it and sticking your hands out to warm them by the fire.
“Steve, I’m in love with this room,” you gushed, smiling up at him.
“And here I thought I’d never be jealous of my own house,” he joked, lowering himself down beside you. He set your duffel to the side and carefully set his coffee down a few feet away before pulling you flush against his side. You leaned into him as his arm came up around your shoulders, closing your eyes as you breathed in the scent of his cologne.
“I can’t take full credit for this place, though,” Steve continued on. “When I picked this house out, Tony surprised me by hiring a decorator. But there are a few things that I’ve done here and there to put my own spin on it.”
“Like what?”
You watched as he pointed at the painting above the mantle, nodding towards it.
“Well, I did that about a week after I moved in.”
“Wait, you painted that? Steve, that’s amazing.”
You turned to him just in time to catch the blush that was painted over his features. He just chuckled and shook his head, waving off your compliment.
“Nah, it’s nothing. I don’t make nearly as much art as I used to,” he confessed. “Back when I was growing up, I would draw on the side to earn extra cash for me and my mom all the time.”
You smiled, craning your neck so you could look up at him.
“What kind of things would you draw?” you asked.
“Usually people,” he reminisced. “I would set up my sketchpad on a street in a rich neighborhood, and some people passing by would give me a nickel to do a quick sketch of them.”
“Wow… So on top of everything else, he draws too,” you chuckled. “Is there anything you can’t do, Steve?”
He laughed, pulling you tighter against him.
“Oh, god, yeah,” he laughed. “You could write a series of encyclopedias about the things I can’t do.”
“Oh, please. Name just one.”
“I can’t dance,” he said immediately.
“C’mon, everyone can dance-“
“Everyone except for Steve Rogers,” he insisted. “It was the same back when I was younger; whether it’s to modern music or not, I can’t dance without looking like a goober.”
You snorted, shaking your head.
“I’m sorry, just… ‘Goober’?”
Steve winced, glancing at you sheepishly.
“…People don’t say ‘goober’ anymore?”
“Steve, no one has used the word ‘goober’ in a sentence in a thousand years.”
“Now, I know that’s not true. I’m old, but I’m not a thousand-“
“Are you sure about that?” you interrupted with a grin. “Because anyone who says goober should probably be checked into a nursing home. Actually, I passed a few on the way, if you’d like to consider-“
You cut yourself off with a squeal as Steve turned you around, pressing your back to the floor as he straddled your hips.
“You know what?” he laughed. “I don’t need to take this abuse.”
You couldn’t hold back the giggles that were tumbling out of your lips, and Steve’s smile matched yours as he held you firmly in place despite how much you were squirming.
“Oh, what, do you have somewhere to go, miss?” he asked, arching an eyebrow.
“Yes!”
“And where is that?”
“I was hoping,” you smiled, “to explore my boyfriend’s house a little bit. See what kind of incriminating things I can find in his bedside drawers and medicine cabinets; you know how it is.”
“Hmmm… No, can’t say I do. What I do know, though,” he remarked, moving one of his hands slowly down your side, “is that your boyfriend has something else he would rather be doing.”
You bit your lip, looking down to watch as his hand snaked lower and lower, eventually finding the button on your jeans. His fingers played with it a bit as he watched your face to gauge your reaction; you looked up at him, staring into his blue irises, and saw how his pupils seemed to dilate.
Suddenly, his mouth was on yours, and you made a small noise of surprise before wrapping your arms around his back and kissing him. The carpet was soft beneath your skin as he slowly started to pull your shirt off, and when you finally broke your kiss, it was only so he could fully remove it and toss it onto the couch. The heat of the fire was warm against your right side, but you still shivered as his eyes hungrily settled on your breasts. You said a silent thank you to your past self for deciding to wear one of your nicer bras that morning as Steve ran his hands over the pink lace of your lingerie.
“I really like this,” he murmured under his breath, most likely to himself. You felt your cheeks heat up from his praise, but your eyes widened when Steve abruptly reached around your back and ripped the bra’s band clean in half.
“Steve!”
“I’ll buy you another one just like it,” he promised, hushing your protests with another searing kiss.
He tossed the now-useless scrap of fabric away before greedily kneading at your tits, rolling them in his palms as his hips started to grind against yours. Every time his bulge pressed against you just right, you felt shocks of pleasure emanate from your already-drenched pussy.
His lips slowly started to trek downwards, trailing a path down your cheek to your neck, and you cried out when you felt him bite your flesh. Your fingers dug into his shoulders as he licked over the bitemark, soothing it before once more sucking in what you were certain would be an impressive hickey later.
Suddenly, though, you felt yourself being flipped over, and your breath was nearly taken away when Steve maneuvered you onto your belly.
“I wanna try something,” he murmured against your ear. You nodded quickly as you felt him guide you up onto your knees, and you shifted to support your weight on your elbows.
You craned your neck and looked over your shoulder, watching as Steve efficiently started removing his and the rest of your clothes, tossing them into a neat pile before turning his attention to you again. He smirked, giving you a wink as he knelt behind you.
“Have I mentioned,” he asked, “how much I love your ass?”
As soon as the words left his mouth, you saw his jaw clench as he brought his palm down hard against your ass. You gasped, closing your eyes and letting your head fall forward. Again, he spanked you, and you bit your lip from the sting it left in its wake.
“I asked you a question, baby,” Steve cooed as his hands groped and squeezed your ass.
“I-I,” you stammered, trying to gather your scattered thought. “Uh, n-no, I don’t think you’ve mentioned it.”
“Well.” You could hear the smile on his lips as he once more leaned down, covering your body with his as he kissed your shoulder. “I love it. And I wanna watch it as I fuck you.”
You gulped and nodded, biting your lip as Steve’s mouth trailed down your spine. A noise escaped your throat as his hands spread your ass cheeks, and your pussy clenched as it was exposed to the sudden rush of cool air. You spread your knees wider apart and arched your back, glancing behind you once again.
Steve’s eyes darkened as he took in your form, sitting back on his heels as his hands shifted, using his thumbs to keep you spread open while the rest of his digits curled around your hips. His tongue darted out, licking his lips as his eyes focused on your pussy.
“So wet,” he observed, leaning closer. “Is this all for me?”
“Yes, sir.”
“And do you want me?”
“Yes, Steve, please-“
“What happened to sir?”
He arched an eyebrow, smirking up at you, and you felt something mischievous stir within you.
“Sorry, Captain,” you purred, wiggling your ass. “I meant to say, ‘Please, sir, fuck me until I can’t walk straight-‘”
A moan interrupted you as Steve leaned in and licked a stripe up your pussy, from your clit to your entrance. Your eyes fluttered shut, and you let out a moan as he lapped at your clit, circling it with the tip of his tongue. One of his hands trailed up your back until it rested between your shoulder blades, and you felt him slowly start to press you downwards until your chest was flush against the carpet and your ass was sticking further up into the air.
All the while, his tongue was starting to flatten out, tracing patterns against your clit that had you seeing stars. You squeezed your eyes shut and pressed your forehead against your crossed forearms, your hips jolting any time his tongue changed its pace. Moans fell from your lips unbidden, and you hoped to God his neighbors couldn’t hear you as you grew louder and louder.
The carpet was rough against your knees and your hands, and the lewd sounds of Steve’s tongue laving over your soaked cunt filled the air. You could feel your own juices running down the inside of your thighs, and you could tell from the knot tightening in your belly that you were getting close to cumming.
“Steve,” you panted, pushing your hips back against him. “Fuck, I’m close-“
As soon as the words were out of your mouth, though, Steve pulled away. You whined at the loss, your nails digging into the carpet as you squeezed your thighs together. Within seconds, though, you felt Steve grip your hips as he drew himself up onto his knees, and before you take a breath to prepare yourself, he was pushing into you.
“O-oh, fuck,” he groaned, “Been thinkin’ about this pussy all damn day…”
He wasted no time before starting to move, and you braced yourself as you felt the way your pussy stretched around him; his cock was still just as big as you remembered it being, but despite the burn from being stuffed so full, it still felt amazing as your cunt took his hard length.
“Captain, oh my God-“
You craned your neck to watch him, taking in the way his muscles tensed and flexed as he rolled his hips forward. His eyebrows were furrowed, and his jaw was clenched; you wondered if he was straining to control himself and his strength, doing his best not to hurt you.
Ragged groans were emanating from his parted lips as he fucked you into the floor, and his hands were continuously exploring your body, gliding over your ass to your tits and then back to your hips. With every thrust, the head of his cock was slamming into a spot deep inside of you that had you all but screaming his name, and you knew it wouldn’t be long before you found your release.
“You’re getting close,” Steve grunted, pressing his chest against your back and caging you in beneath his body. “I can feel it; you gonna cum for me?”
“Y-yes, sir,” you moaned. “F-fuck, I’m so close-“
One of Steve’s hands moved towards your pussy, brushing past your folds to tap your clit in time with his thrusts. You wailed, your body tensing as your orgasm ripped through you. Your eyes rolled as wave after wave of pleasure washed over your body, and somewhere in the background you could hear Steve’s groan as he came inside of you. Hot cum coated your inner walls as you both rode out your highs, and you shivered as his cock began to soften inside of you.
“Fuck, doll,” he sighed, rolling over onto his side. He gently took you in his arms, spooning you from behind as you faced the fire. “I’d been looking forward to that.”
A laugh bubbled past your lips, and you turned your head to press a quick peck to his lips.
“Me too. To be honest, I don’t know how I’m gonna be able to keep my hands off of you, now that I’m gonna be staying here.”
You turned away just as a wide grin spread over Steve’s face, and you missed the pleased, possessive gleam in his eyes as he pecked your cheek.
“I hope it takes them a long time to fix your heating, then.”
____________
The rest of the day went by quickly. You and Steve laid there, talking and dozing for a good hour before going for another round. This time, he fucked you from behind as you laid on the floor, rocking his hips slowly as he whispered filthy things into your ear. Your orgasm was slow-building and languid as he slowly wrung it out of you, and you didn’t even realize you’d fallen asleep afterwards until you awoke to find Steve picking you up.
“Sorry, doll,” he whispered. “I didn’t mean to wake you.”
“Oh! Oh, no, it’s… it’s fine. Shit, what time is it?”
“It’s almost five.” Your eyebrows flew up as he started carrying you to the staircase, climbing it with long, confident strides despite baring the weight of an entire other person in his arms. “I was just about to start on dinner.”
“Oh?” A yawn interrupted you, and you giggled when Steve yawned immediately after. “Oh, sorry.”
“For what?”
“For giving you my yawn.”
Steve frowned.
“I… Don’t understand. Your yawn?”
“Yeah! Cuz, you know. Yawns are contagious?”
He shook his head as he carried you into a bathroom decorated in white and blue tile. He sat you down on the counter as he bent down to retrieve a hand towel from beneath the sink, and you took the opportunity to admire just how wide his shoulders were.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.
“Yawns are contagious; for most people, if they see someone else yawn, it makes them yawn, too,” you explained. “It’s a sign of empathy.”
“Huh.” Steve smiled as he ran the towel under the sink, getting it wet with warm water. “Well. Since I caught your yawn…”
“…It means you’re a very empathetic person,” you finished. “But I could’ve told you that anyways.”
“Mm.”
He pulled your legs apart gently as he nodded, and you felt your cheeks heat up as he started to clean the cum from between your legs. His touch was exceedingly gentle as he ran the rag over your skin, and the warmth in his eyes as he looked at you made butterflies erupt into flight within your chest. You thought that this might just be the most intimate moment you’d ever shared with another person; there was something about the sudden shift in mood and the vulnerability of your position that made you want to cling to Steve and never let go.
You weren’t sure who leaned in first, but his lips found yours in a slow, lazy kiss that had your toes curling. You ran your fingers through his hair, feeling his beard as it tickled and brushed against your chin. He tasted like coffee, and he was so warm; you felt as if you were going to dissolve into his touch.
From there, Steve carried you into the kitchen, which was right next to the living room. It, too, was decked out with blue and white tile, and there were several modern stainless steel appliances with the Stark logo on them. You sat on one of the barstools at the island in the center of the room, making easy conversation with your boyfriend as he set about cooking a casserole of some sort.
“Thanks again for letting me stay with you,” you sighed, setting your chin in your hand. “Leave it to my luck to have my heat go out during the coldest time in the year.”
“I don’t think it had anything to do with luck,” Steve spoke, glancing up at you. “I looked into it, and apparently three other apartment complexes in your neighborhood had the same thing happen.”
You straightened upon hearing that; you hadn’t seen that anywhere on the news.
“Oh, wow. I had no idea.”
He shrugged, pulling a head of broccoli from the fridge.
“Well, your side of town isn’t exactly the, uh…safest place to live,” he mused. “If anything, I’m surprised this hasn’t happened sooner.”
“Hey, it’s not so bad,” you quickly defended. “If anything, it’s on the nicer side of things for that part of Brooklyn.”
For a moment, Steve looked as if he wanted to say something, but he held back, closing his mouth before he could make whatever point he’d just thought of.
“…I guess I just worry about you,” he finally huffed. “Sorry; I know that’s probably paranoid.”
“It is,” you agreed. “But… It’s also very sweet. And I am grateful that you invited me to stay here with you.”
A smile came to his lips, and his eyes twinkled as he looked over at you.
“It’s my pleasure, sweetheart.”
As it turned out, the casserole Steve made was actually good, despite its bland coloration and questionable look. It was a recipe from the 30’s, after all, but you weren’t disappointed. After eating, you insisted on helping Steve do the dishes, which you did standing side by side in a comfortable silence.
Once the dishes were dried and put away, Steve brought your duffel bag up to the bedroom, giving you a quick tour of the space on the way.
“There are three stories and a basement,” he explained as you ascended the stairs. “But I only use the first and second floor, for the most part.”
He paused on the landing, pointing out various doorways as he listed off rooms.
“Office, bathroom, and bedroom through there,” he explained, gesturing to each respectively. He turned and pointed towards the second set of stairs, which lead upwards. “Upstairs is there, but don’t bother checking it out; it’s just storage and old boxes.”
He walked into the bedroom, which had in it the biggest bed that you had ever laid eyes on. It looked like something out of a movie, and you immediately walked over and sank down, headfirst, into its grey sheets. Steve laughed as he set your bag on the dresser.
“Comfy?”
“Oh, my God,” you groaned, your voice muffled by the sheets. “It’s so comfy, Steve.”
“I did not understand a word of what you just said,” he joked. “But I think it was a yes.”
That evening, the two of you sat on the sofa and watched movies in your pajamas. As it turned out, Steve had never seen Star Wars (though you weren’t terribly surprised by that fact), so he rented A New Hope for the two of you. He kept up with the plot surprisingly well, though you could tell some of the science-fiction jargon went way over his head. And once it was over, he asked if you would watch Empire Strikes Back with him next, which you happily agreed to do even though you were starting to feel your eyelids grow heavy.
Steve’s reaction to the ending, though, was completely worth staying up. You laughed as he sat there, watching the credits, his jaw still slack with shock.
“…So wait a minute,” he finally said, setting his elbows on his knees and staring at the screen. “You’re tellin’ me that Darth Vader is Luke’s father?!”
“I cannot believe you haven’t had that spoiled for you before,” you laughed.
“I mean, I thought it was a little funny that his name means ‘father’ in German, but I thought it was just a coincidence,” he huffed, running a hand through his hair. He let himself relax once again, sinking back into the sofa cushions, and you set your head on his shoulder as he tapped his foot restlessly.
“Darth Vader is Luke’s dad,” he whispered to himself, and you barked out a laugh. Directly afterwards, though, a yawn overtook you, and Steve looked down at you with an arched eyebrow. “Gettin’ sleepy?”
“Just a bit,” you yawned once again. You blinked up at Steve slowly, finding a fond smile plastered across his lips.
“I think,” he said, pulling you into his arms, “that it’s time for us to go to bed.”
You made no protest as he picked you up, effortlessly carrying you through the house as he went around, shutting off all the lights. He only let you go once he brought you to the bedroom, and you kissed his cheek before kneeling down by your duffel, looking around for your toothbrush.
“Oh, shit,” you groaned under your breath. “No, no, come on-“
“What’s the matter?” Steve asked from the other side of the room.
“I forgot my toothbrush,” you sighed, standing up. “I’m gonna have the worst morning breath.”
Steve chuckled and gestured for you to follow him to the bathroom.
“Don’t worry; I picked up an extra for you the last time I was at the store,” he told you.
“Oh, thank God-“ You paused, arching an eyebrow at him. “Wait… How did you know I would be over?”
The smile on his face faltered for just a second as he turned to answer your question, but it righted itself before he spoke next.
“Oh, I didn’t. But I was hopeful that you’d spend the night here at some point.”
You grinned, nudging his shoulder with yours after he pulled a still-packaged toothbrush out of the medicine cabinet.
“Someone was confident,” you smirked.
“No, not confident,” he corrected you. “Just hopeful.”
____________
You slept like a baby that night; how could you not? Steve held you in his arms almost the entire time; as it turned out, he was a bit of a cuddler in his sleep. You weren’t complaining, though; when you woke up the next morning, you felt more well-rested than you had in a long, long time.
“Oh, you’re finally awake.”
You turned to find Steve walking into the bedroom, already dressed in a pair of jeans and a blue button-down. A quick glance towards the clock told you that it was only 8:07 in the morning, but you could already smell breakfast wafting from downstairs.
“How’d you sleep?” Steve asked, drawing your attention back to him.
“Perfectly,” you smiled, pushing the sheets back and stretching.
“Well, I’m glad. We have a busy day ahead of us,” he remarked. You arched an eyebrow as you stood up and made your way over to your duffel.
“Oh, really? What do you have planned for us, Cap?”
You jumped when you felt him press up against you from behind, and you let him tilt your head to the side so he could press a soft kiss to your neck.
“Well,” he murmured, trailing his hands over your hips. “I thought that we could eat a big breakfast, first off. And afterwards, I was thinking we could go to the zoo.”
You gasped and spun around, feeling excitement spark in your chest.
“What?!”
Steve laughed, a wide grin spreading over his features.
“Well, why not? I’m in between missions, so there’s nowhere for me to be. And I’ve always wanted to take a dame to Prospect Park; me and Bucky were actually at the opening of the zoo there back in the 30’s.”
“That’s…really cool, Steve,” you smiled, starting to pick out your outfit for the day. “What was it like?”
Steve sat on the bed and watched as you debated which sweater you wanted to wear with the jeans you’d picked out, thinking back to the fond memory.
“Well, me and Bucky were broke, first of all,” he chuckled. “We couldn’t afford a ticket in, but Buck was friends with one of the zookeeper’s sons. So he snuck us in with him when he went in to work that morning.
“The whole place was packed that first day; things were different back then, you know. Most people had only ever seen pictures of an elephant or a lion, and even then, the pictures weren’t detailed and in color the way they are today. So people were seeing these creatures they’d only ever imagined before in real life for the first time. It was…”
You looked over as you pulled your sweater over your head, catching the small, wistful smile on Steve’s face as he thought back to that time.
“It was magical, as corny as that sounds,” he finally sighed. “Plus, that opening day was the day before my birthday, so it was extra special for me.”
“Oh, I bet that was one incredible b-day,” you said. “What day is it on?”
At that, Steve paused, and you could have sworn that a blush had started to spread over his cheeks.
“I… Well, it’s…”
You frowned, walking over to set your hands on his shoulders.
“What is it?” you asked? “Don’t wanna tell your own girlfriend when your birthday is?”
Steve let out a huff of laughter at that, letting his hands come to rest on your waist.
“It’s just… Well. When Tony found out about it, he never let me hear the end of it. In fact, every year since he found out, he’s thrown an enormous, obnoxious birthday barbeque for me.”
“Oh, come on, that doesn’t sound so bad-“
“My birthday is on the fourth of July.”
You blinked, trying your best to fight back the grin that was trying to spread over your face. A sharp burst of laughter escaped you, and you quickly threw your hand over your mouth as Steve let out a sigh.
“…Yyyyeah…”
“You’re kidding me,” you giggled, letting your hand fall from your mouth to your chest. “No, that’s…that’s too perfect. The universe would never be so rude to you.”
Steve shook his head, scratching his beard.
“Tony puts up these banners that say Happy America Day, and my cake has been red, white, and blue for the past five years.”
You couldn’t help it; you laughed so hard that tears came to your eyes; Steve had just looked so defeated as he said that, and you couldn’t deny the irony that Steve would also just happen to be born on the same day America declared its independence from Britain. He took it like a champ, though, and just laughed with you at the coincidence.
“Well,” you finally said, still grinning, “this year we’ll do something for your birthday that’s decidedly not patriotic.”
Steve, for his part, actually looked touched, and there was a tone of relief in his next words.
“I would…really like that.”
______________
That day might have been one of the best of your life. After feasting on pancakes, bacon, and scrambled eggs, the two of you dressed up in your warmest coats and left for the zoo. Steve had offered to drive you there on his motorcycle, and despite your initial trepidation, you’d said yes. As it turned out, you enjoyed the experience, if for no other reason than it gave you an excuse to have Steve between your legs for the duration of the short drive. It was nice to feel the wind rush around you as you clung to him, and the way the bike tilted into the twists and turns of the road was exhilarating.
You’d never had as much fun at a zoo as you had that day. Steve gave you a grand tour of the parts he remembered from the 30’s, and you told him random facts about the various animals the two of you saw. And despite the fact that Steve swore up and down that he didn’t enjoy using modern technology, he took nearly a thousand pictures that day – most of them were of you or whatever animal you were looking at, but you managed to convince him to take a few selfies with you.
You even captured a picture of Steve that, in your opinion, was priceless. It was of him in front of the lion exhibit, and it was taken the moment one of the lions started walking right towards the glass. Steve’s eyes were wide in the photo, and his mouth was open wide in an excited smile; you’d found out later that lions were his favorite animal. He told you that as you two sat in the zoo’s main plaza, snacking on some overpriced pizza that Steve had insisted he didn’t mind getting for the two of you.
“To be fair,” he said after laughing at the picture, “lions are my favorites. I get that excited any time I see one.”
“Really? Why lions?” you asked.
One of the corners of his mouth lifted in a smile, and he took a sip of his beer before answering.
“They were always my mom’s favorite,” he explained, and you could hear a hint of melancholy in his voice. “I used to draw them for her; they always made her happy, even after she got sick.”
A sad smile had fallen over his face, and your heart squeezed at the sight of it.
“…I can tell you miss her,” you spoke softly, reaching over to put your hand over his. “But for what it’s worth, I know that she was proud of you, and she’d be even prouder to see who you’ve become. But… I know that doesn’t make it any easier.”
Steve’s eyes found yours, and no one could miss the affection that was glimmering in them for you. His hand squeezed yours, and he leaned in to press a kiss to your cheek.
“Thanks, doll,” he murmured. “It does help, more than you know.”
After the two of you finished your lunch, you walked around the rest of the zoo, hand in hand. Steve’s beard made it harder for people to recognize him, but there were still a few who came up asking for selfies with him. He was always gracious about it, letting them take a quick photo and thanking them for their kind words before turning back to you. There were others who didn’t come up to talk to him but who definitely still recognized who he was; you saw a few of them taking pictures of you, but you tried not to worry about it, focusing instead of Steve and the scenery around you.
Once you were done at the zoo, you two walked around for a while without any real purpose or destination. You took in the sights of the city, strolling down tiny side streets and exploring what Brooklyn had to offer. Towards mid-afternoon, you stumbled upon a small, hole-in-the-wall café that had the most delicious smell wafting from its open door. The two of you had stepped in to find that the shop owner had just baked some homemade cinnamon rolls, and so the two of you took a break in your exploration of the city to have a cup of coffee while sharing a cinnamon roll. It, of course, was sinfully delicious, as was the sight of Steve licking icing off of his lips.
He caught you staring at one point and winked, causing you to look away as your cheeks heated up in embarrassment. You got him right back, though, when you saw his eyes linger on your mouth as you licked icing off your fingertips.
“See something you like, sir?” you’d asked quietly. His eyes had visibly darkened, and his voice was husky when he leaned in to murmur his reply.
“I’m gonna remember that later on tonight, baby,” he’d promised.
And once the two of you got back to his place, that’s exactly what he did. That night, the two of you could barely keep your hands off each other. When you finally did manage to go to sleep, you were thoroughly exhausted, which might have been the reason why you slept so late the next day. In any case, when you finally woke up, the clock on the nightstand told you it was 9:30 already.
“Fuck,” you sighed, sitting up stiffly as your sore muscles ached in protest.
No amount of stretching was able to calm the ache in your limbs, but despite how it made your every movement burn, you didn’t regret a single thing about the day before. A small, sated smile had settled over your lips as you pulled on one of Steve’s t-shirts and made your way downstairs. Halfway there, though, you heard your lover’s voice coming from the kitchen, and he didn’t seem happy.
You paused, a frown spreading over your face you slowed to a stop.
“I don’t care, Fury,” Steve was saying. You peeked around the corner, seeing him seated at the island, a stormy expression on his face as he stared down at his cup of coffee. You could just barely catch the sound of a man yelling something on the other line, but you couldn’t make out his words.
“Then get Natasha to lead the mission,” he suddenly barked, and you ducked back around the corner as you listened. “Or Sam; he’s more than capable of-“
He was interrupted again, and you bit your lip, contemplating whether or not you should reveal yourself. Maybe you should go back upstairs? But what if he heard you walking away – would he realize you’d been eavesdropping?
“Director, my personal relationships are none of your business,” he all but growled, and your ears perked up; was he talking about you? “And neither are my reasons for turning down missions. Bottom line is, I’m not going. Sam will be willing to lead, and you can send Wanda in for extra backup. And before you say anything, yes, she’s ready for this.”
With that, Steve hung up; you heard the clatter of him dropping his phone onto the countertop. You held your breath and counted to ten in your head before straightening up and walking around the corner, watching as his head popped up to look at you.
“Good morning,” you smiled, walking over to press a kiss to his cheek. “Did I hear you on the phone with someone?”
Instantly, the worried lines on his face disappeared, and an easy smile overtook his features as he pulled you in for a quick kiss.
“Oh, don’t worry about that,” he said. “Just some business back at the compound – nothing to worry about.”
You pulled back, looking over his face; as upset as he’d sounded before, now there were no traces of frustration to be seen. A small part inside of you glowed at the thought that you’d been the one to relieve his tension so quickly, but you couldn’t help but wonder about what his phone call had been about.
“I was thinking we could go back to that café we found yesterday for breakfast,” he said abruptly. “Does that sound good to you?”
“Oh! Yeah,” you said, smiling. “I’d like that. I’ll go get dressed.”
Steve smiled and nodded, watching your ass as you walked back towards the stairs. His eyes followed you until you completely left the room, and even then his gaze lingered where you’d been standing moments before; he was totally, completely, addicted to the feelings you brought up in him. At first, he’d felt guilty about tampering with the heating unit for your building, but he reasoned that it would only take them about a week to fix it. And, God, did he need this – a week alone with the woman he was so quickly growing to adore.
Any shred of regret he’d felt from stealing the copper wires from your heating unit or from turning down missions just so he could spend more time with you had faded away as soon as you came walking into the kitchen wearing nothing but his t-shirt. So, no, he wasn’t going to entertain Director Fury’s tantrums when he said no to an assignment. In fact, he reached for his phone and turned it off before sliding it in his pocket and picking up the newspaper in front of him.
He sipped his coffee as he skimmed over the articles, and although he usually discarded the gossip and entertainment sections entirely, his eyes fell on a headline that caught his attention. Biting his lip, he turned to its page, staring that the picture printed before him. It was from yesterday, when the two of you had gone to the zoo. His hand was in yours, and you were smiling up at him as the two of you strolled past the elephant exhibit. ‘Captain America Finally Finds Love?’ was scrawled boldly across the top of the page, and his eyes scanned the article, taking in the various speculations as to who you were and how you’d met the famous super soldier.
Just as he was finished reading, he heard your footsteps start to descend the staircase, and he quickly pulled the page out of the paper and folded it in half a few times, sliding it into his pocket just before you appeared in the doorway, looking absolutely gorgeous in a deep burgundy sweater dress and soft gray leggings.
“Ready to go?” you asked, adjusting the knit cat perched on top of your head.
Steve grinned and stood up, grabbing his keys before making his way over to you.
“I sure am, doll.”
