El racismo y los estereotipos en el cine español

¡Bienvenidos lectores y lectoras! Hoy voy a discutir un desafío del cine contemporáneo que es pertinente a los medios de muchos países: el racismo y los estereotipos. En el pasado, la literatura, la televisión, y el cine del occidente eran influidos mucho por los estereotipos populares de las personas que no fueran blancas. En España específicamente, los grupos como las poblaciones negras, musulmanas, gitanos, y aún latinoamericanas han sufrido especialmente de este tratamiento. Dependiendo en la moda de la película, los personajes de estos grupos eran demonizados o fetichizados, y más importante, eran representados como los forasteros. Afortunadamente, con los movimientos y protestas antirracistas en las últimas décadas, los cineastas ahora son presionados más para prestar atención a esta forma de representación. Pero, los problemas no han desaparecido.

El primer problema es que los estereotipos racistas ya permanecen en muchas películas. Por ejemplo, en muchas películas las actrices de origen africano o latinoamericano tienen papeles sexuales. Según a la actriz Anahí Beholi (en el foto abajo), siempre les era ofrecida los papeles de las mujeres latinoamericanas debido a sus rasgos físicas, aunque es catalana, y estos papeles suelen son para las prostitutas. Dijo que cuando se llegaba una separata sólo indican aquel, que el personaje era latinoamericano, sin atender a que Sudamérica era un continente muy diverso y con muchos acentos y que no podía hacer de española. Adicionó que a ella le gustaría que se había ofrecido un papel de funcionaria. La actriz gitana Coco Reyes tiene un problema ligeramente diferente, dondé sus papeles de las personajes gitanas «están asociados a la fealdad en todos sus sentidos». Dijo que cuándo vestía su traje, había pensado: ‘¿Pero por qué…? ¿Por qué esta ropa tan fea y tan mal conjuntada?’».

En mi opinión, ambos la fetichización y demonización de los personajes racializados son muy dañinos. En todos los repartos de cine, solo 7.5% son los personajes racializados, por eso alguna forma de representación es significativa. Los narrativos y temas del cine tienen efectos tangibles en la sociedad, y la continuación y repetición de estos estereotipos afectan la percepción pública de los personas de estos grupos, y también influyen su autopercepción. 

Para resolver este problema, es necesario elevar las voces de las minorías, especialmente los directores y cineastas minoritarios. Solo una diversificación en el proceso de los ideas en el cine puede causar un cambio en la ejecución de estas ideas. Pero, este es un objetivo difícil. Desafortunadamente, en esta industria, muchas películas más pequeñas con directores minoritarios, como O Dikhipen, un ciclo de cine romani, quedan principalmente dentro de las comunidades que las representan. Hay excepciones, como la película Los Tarantos, que no tiene un director gitano pero ocurrió entre las comunidades gitanas con los protagonistas gitanos, pero no son comunes.

No pienso que haya una solución simple a esta situación, pero creo que es importante educar a la gente sobre estos problemas. La industria del cine depende de su audiencia, y los sistemas que promueven los estereotipos dependen de la ignorancia y complacencia del público. La gente siempre ha sido la raíz del cambio, necesitamos continuar nuestros esfuerzos aún cuándo parece que no hay ningún progreso, porque aún excepciones son significativos a la causa para un mundo que demuestra apoyo a toda su población.
