If You Are Feeding a Homeless Shelter:

• DO NOT feed them something you would not want to eat. My local homeless shelter ends up with stuff I would not touch with a 10 ft pole. These people are HUMAN.

• Try staying away from pasta dishes. Pasta is cheap, easy, and hearty, which is wonderful! However, do you know how many pasta dishes they get on a regular basis? Because you can only have so many pasta dishes, week by week, before it sucks.

• Be imaginative and have fun cooking. A brisket can serve 60, with the right cut of meat. Plus, it is flavorful and hearty. A fresh salad is cheap and easy if you get a bag of chopped lettuce or greens: all you have to do is pour it into the serving tray. What else can you do? A build-your-own burrito bar, a taco bar, seafood gumbo, jambalaya, and so much more.

• What do you usually have for dinner? A protein, a veggie dish, maybe some fruit, and a dessert. Please think like that.

• Cook like you’re cooking for your family; season everything. Put some love in the dish. Make it flavorful, and for the love of all things good and holy, PLEASE DO NOT SERVE SOMETHING THAT YOU DO NOT FIND APPETIZING.

• Talk to the people. Say hello. Smile. Ask if they want what you’re serving. Give them a little extra. You won’t believe the impact.

I have been feeding dinner to the same homeless shelter a few times a month since I was thirteen. So, if we do the math, that’s eight years since I roped my family into doing this. We have heard horror stories of unseasonsed steamed broccoli, bologna sandwich dinners, half-cooked spaghetti, and so much more. One Church gives them something called “Texas Hash” every week. It is neither Texas, nor hash, as it is ground beef, rice, and tomato paste, mixed together. They hate it, but what else is there to eat? So, please recognize and remember that homeless people are people. Do not feed them what you wouldn’t eat.

I don't know if I believe in a traditional "God," but I definitely believe in the Universe, in a Something, in an afterlife, in a higher power of some sort. . And I've made my peace with life. That I'm going to be a good person because *I'm* good, not based on what varying levels of good or bad I judge others to be. I'd rather believe the best in people, and sometimes be wrong, than look at the whole world in a negative, nasty way, thinking the worst of everyone, with my terrible attitude proving me right, like a self-fulfilling prophesy. . I believe in karma. I believe the Universe wants balance. I believe things eventually work out the way they should. I believe there are strong undercurrents in life, the way magnets have a pull, the way a kid's tippy toy will always right itself, and I believe what's meant for you, finds you. . So. It's not my job to judge everyone else. I can be kind anyway. Obvs that's a struggle sometimes. I'm petty af sometimes, lol. But also, my empathy is off the charts, so it's easy for me to see the other side, put myself in their shoes, all that. . In this coming week, going into a new month, try this attitude too. Try to not be a dick. Because I got off of Facebook for a few months, get back on - and I swear, it's even worse. Like if you want to see the hateful, ignorant underbelly of your city, don't go to the seedy neighborhood downtown - read the comments on your local news station's Facebook posts jfc. They're literally fighting because they're asked to be safe, please *stop using horse dewormer on themselves for covid* -- but it's their freedom and everyone is a liar and hate/hate/hate and they'll protest and hang the governor and it's tyranny! Sigh. .
